Letter from the Chancellor and Head of School Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Dwight, As we look back on a year filled with exciting new developments, one theme continually emerges: building community — building our own community on campus, as well as forging connections with those beyond our front door, across town, and around the world. Dwight’s community is an extended family comprised of inspiring IB-trained faculty, a professional staff of experts, enthusiastic and engaging students, their dedicated parents, accomplished alumni, and generous donors. It expands every day, and in new and meaningful directions with each academic year, reaffirming our 140-year-old shared commitment to igniting “the spark of genius” in every child. Perhaps the most transformative community-building initiative of recent years is our unique East Harlem community partnership, which we formally announced in early 2013. Establishing a home for Dwight’s new Athletic Center, this ground-breaking partnership will usher in unlimited opportunities for Dwight students today and for those of future generations. Envisioning the possibilities for our students — and for the faculty who mentor them — is what community-building at Dwight is all about. We couldn’t make them a reality without critical resources and philanthropy. Dwight students and teachers are privileged to have such strong financial support from The Dwight School Foundation and its Board of Trustees, chaired by Susan Kessler (Parent ’10 and ’14). Last year, the Foundation’s Annual Fund Committee, under the leadership of
Trustees Marie Lippman (Parent ’15) and Drew Pizzo (Parent ’15 and ’18), raised $1,473,713 from 470 donors. This included $496,657 from the Class of 2013 families alone, thanks to the efforts of the Senior Gift Committee, chaired by Trustee Marlene Arbess (Parent ’13). As a result, the beautiful aquatic center in our new Dwight School Athletic Center is named in honor of the Class of 2013. A record $66,620 came from alumni donors, thanks to the efforts of our Alumni Council and its President, Peter Timmins ’90. Our Spring Benefit, after a three-year hiatus, netted an additional $116,898 thanks to a valiant push by Co-Chairs Hege Eriksen (Parent ’26 and ’21) and Kat Grollo (Parent ’21 and ’17). Finally, $215,000 arrived in critical capital gifts to strengthen the Foundation’s endowment and assist with facilities enhancements. Most importantly, we thank all of you for donating your time, talents, and treasure to help us fulfill our mission of igniting the “spark of genius” in every child. We are enormously proud to have your support. Fondly, Stephen Spahn Chancellor, The Dwight Schools
Dianne Drew Head of School, Dwight School (New York)

Global Vision
Students across our campuses in New York, London, Seoul, and Canada connect, interact, and share their different perspectives and cultural experiences through a variety of trips, exchanges,
4
and communications, enriching the educational process for all.
Personalized Learning
Dwight always puts the students – and their strengths and interests – first. No two students are alike, and the School will take extra steps to find and nurture each child’s unique ‘spark of genius.’

Letter from The Dwight School Foundation Trustee Chair
Dear Fellow Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Dwight School, I am honored to work with our dedicated Foundation Trustees and all of you to ensure that a Dwight education is as fine as any in the world. As both the parent of a graduate and now the parent of a 12th grader, I have seen how the remarkable Dwight experience allows children to find and develop their unique “spark of genius.” I have also witnessed first-hand the impact your generosity has had on the lives of countless Dwight students and faculty.
Susan Kessler
Our fundraising successes would not be possible without the growing number of wonderful volunteers helping to engage and connect our constituents in meaningful ways to the School: Foundation Board Trustees, the Annual Fund Committee, the Senior Gift Committee, the Spring Benefit Committee, the Parents Association, and the Alumni Council. Their efforts to foster community and bring more resources to the Foundation have been inspiring. As always, I want to thank Chancellor Stephen H. Spahn for his visionary leadership and steadfast commitment to our children. I also want to thank Head of School Dianne Drew and Dwight’s exceptional faculty and staff for their tireless efforts to make Dwight such a magical place. Here’s to another exciting year ahead! Warmly,
Susan Kessler (Parent ’10 and ’14) Dwight School Foundation, Trustee Board Chair

Three Pillars of the Dwight Community
Personalized Learning We focus on developing each student’s unique “spark of genius.” Whether connecting a student with an exceptional mentor, designing tailor-made enrichment, crafting a special study abroad opportunity, or providing a novel program or tutorial, Dwight goes out of its way to recognize and foster each student’s gifts and talents. No two student journeys are the same. Community We inspire and educate our students through leadership training to improve their communities. Dwight students undertake service projects locally and internationally, and produce written reflections to demonstrate their learning and their impact. Dwight students are prepared to serve their communities wherever they go. Global Vision We encourage students to see challenges from a global perspective. Our students interact with peers and faculty from forty countries, follow the rigorous International Baccalaureate curriculum, select from a wide array of foreign languages, and travel abroad for service projects, athletic competitions, and student leadership conferences. Dwight New York is the flagship campus and founding member of The Dwight Schools, including campuses and programs in London, Canada, Beijing, and Seoul.

Global Vision
During spring vacation the varsity baseball team went to the Dominican Republic — the center of talent in the baseball universe — for spring training. The team brought the necessary supplies and donated their time to improving the field. In addition, they donated baseball uniforms, helmets, bats and gloves to EFATEBA, which helps Dominican students from families without the means to purchase athletic equipment.

The Dwight School Aquatic Center – in Honor of the Class of 2013 As a thank you for the efforts of the Senior Gift Committee and the senior families, which raised $496,557 for the Foundation’s Annual Fund, Dwight School has named its beautiful new aquatic center in honor of the Class of 2013. The aquatic center is part of Dwight’s new 40,000 square foot Athletic Center, which also contains rooftop tennis courts, a regulationsize gymnasium with seating for 200, a fitness and dance studio, learning spaces, and saunas in the locker rooms. The new aquatic center – and the Athletic Center – is already being used by students, faculty, parents, and alumni and will undoubtedly serve as a source of pride for Dwight students and graduates for years to come. More information about the Dwight School Athletic Center is included on pages 48-49.

In June of 2013, Dwight School unveiled its new 40,000 square foot athletic center, marking another major milestone in the School’s 140-year history.

We are deeply indebted to the following families for their capital cash gifts and pledge payments received between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013. These generous gifts have been vital to enhancing facilities and increasing the endowment of the Foundation.

Spring Benefit A highlight from this school year was The Dwight School Foundation’s Spring Benefit, held at Cipriani Wall Street. The elegant evening included a live performance by Dwight students of the new Dwight song, “This Is Our Time,” which was written and produced in collaboration with Grammy-winner Mikkel Eriksen (Elise ’20 and Selma ’25) and STOMP’s Keith “WildChild” Middleton. The evening also included special food stations provided by Toloache (Julian and Annie Sigal-Medina ’93) and Fresco by Scotto (Anthony, Jr. and Theresa Scotto – Anthony ’14). The extraordinary emcee was Rosanna Scotto (Louis ’12) of “Good Day New York.” Finally, special thanks to Giuseppe Cipriani (Maggio ’08) for providing the spectacular venue and to C.W. and Company for helping to organize such a wonderful event that netted $116,898 for student financial aid and faculty professional development. Parents Association Volunteer Opportunities
Uniform Sales — Parents are asked to donate their children’s outgrown and
gently used uniforms so that they may be re-sold to Dwight families at a very nominal charge. The PA needs volunteers to help sort clothing, set up, staff the sale and pack up unsold items.
Book Fair — The Book Fair is an important school wide event that raises money for the PA, provides books for the School’s libraries and classrooms, and provides families with the opportunity to buy holiday gifts for family and friends. Volunteers help plan and publicize the event, obtain and distribute classroom wish lists and suggested reading lists, and act as chaperones during the event. Bentley House Halloween Parties — Parents are needed to assist School staff
members in decorating, setting up, chaperoning, and breaking down.
International Food Festival — The perfect event that combines great food and fun! Dwight Parents get to showcase dishes from their home countries and everyone gets to try something new!
Spring Benefit Committee — Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the Auc-
tion Committee and the generosity of the entire Dwight community, parents, alumni, and friends enjoy a spectacular evening together while raising funds that help provide financial assistance to Dwight students and professional development for Dwight faculty members. Parents are needed to help organize, publicize and staff the Dwight School Foundation Spring Benefit.
National Teacher Appreciation Week — The PA coordinates a week of faculty appreciation during the nationally celebrated event in May. Safety Patrol Committee — Although one parent of every Dwight student is expected to participate in the after school Safety Patrol, there are sometimes unforeseen circumstances (e.g., illness) when a parent cannot report on the scheduled date or find a substitute. Volunteers are needed to act as substitutes on these rare occasions, and to help schedule parents for Safety Patrol.
Spirit Day — Spirit Day is a Dwight community tradition in which the PA
ECD Fall Festival/Book Fair — Parents on the Riverside Campus come together on a weekend and celebrate the beautiful fall weather with activities such as cupcake decorating, face painting, singing, and dancing. Parent and student volunteers set up and run each activity and help clean up after the event.
Faculty Valentine’s Day Breakfast — On Valentine’s Day, we offer teachers
ECD Winter Wishes Toy Drive — Volunteers on the Riverside Campus collect donated toys and gifts for children in need. The parents host a “wrapping party” to wrap all of the donations, which are then donated to a local charity.
and the School work together to plan and staff a day at Dwight filled with fun and exciting activities (carnival, games, arts & crafts, etc.) for current Dwight families and alumni.
and staff a special buffet breakfast to thank them for their dedication and hard work. We need parents to donate food items and to help set up, serve, and clean up breakfast.
Dwight on Ice — The PA’s popular “Skating under the Stars” ice-skating party
needs volunteers to help at the sign-in/ticket purchase table.
ECD Clothing Sale — Volunteers on the Riverside Campus gather donated clothing from the community and hold a one-day sale. At the end of the sale, all excess clothing is donated to a local charity.

Volunteer Thank You Reception
The Dwight School Foundation’s mission is to bring additional resources to benefit students and faculty at Dwight School to ensure the highest quality education possible. In May we held our annual Volunteer Thank You Reception in the Quad to acknowledge the following groups that play a critical role in supporting this mission: Dwight School Foundation Trustees advise and work in conjunction with the Chancellor,
Head of School, and the Foundation’s Advancement Office to think critically about how Foundation resources can positively impact the lives of Dwight students and faculty. The Annual Fund Committee solicits gifts from members of the Dwight community to
provide support for student financial aid and faculty professional development. The Senior Gift Committee solicits Annual Fund gifts from twelfth grade families and
helps identify a space to be named in honor of the graduating class. The Parents Association welcomes and connects parents to the community, promotes
volunteerism, encourages attendance at school events, and helps address parent concerns to support faculty and build community spirit. The Alumni Council and Class Representatives help identify and promote meaningful
ways for graduates to get involved with the School and stay connected with each other.
