Letter from the Chancellor and Head of School
Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Dwight, As we celebrate 140 remarkable years of personalized learning at Dwight School, we are inspired by the unique journeys of our students, faculty, and alumni. Matt Arbess ’13, our Student Council President, overcame leukemia and significant time away from school to become a top International Baccalaureate (IB) student and leader of his peers for his final year at Dwight. Peter Durning, our chemistry teacher extraordinaire, spent last summer composing a collection of Beatles’ songs with modified lyrics to excite his students about this subject (for example, “All We Need is Chem!”). Roy Lichtenstein ’40, mentored by Dr. Mo Spahn (Stephen’s father), turned his classroom doodling into a world-renowned career. Enabling members of our community to undertake such journeys has long been a hallmark of Dwight — and having the resources to support these efforts is critical.
the educational experience of every student at Dwight. The Foundation’s Annual Fund Committee, under the leadership of Trustee Marlene Arbess (Parent ’13) and Rich Adago (Parent ’14 and ’11), raised $1,138,942 from 618 donors. Part of this total came from the Class of 2012 Senior Gift Committee, chaired by Susan Gorelick. A record $58,951 came from alumni donors thanks to the efforts of our Alumni Council and its President, Peter Timmins ’90. Finally, $670,000 arrived in critical capital gifts.
On that note, we are enormously grateful to The Dwight School Foundation for its continued impact on
i D Dianne Drew Head of School, Dwight School (New York)
Thank you to everyone in our community for donating your dollars, time, and other resources to strengthen our School. We take great pride in helping ignite the “spark of genius” in every child and value tremendously your support of this mission. y Fondly,
Stephen Spahn Chancellor, The Dwight Schools

Letter from The Dwight School Foundation Trustee Chair
Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Dwight, It is a privilege to work with our dedicated Foundation Trustees and our entire community to ensure that a Dwight education is as fine as any in the world. As both the parent of a graduate and now the parent of an eleventh grader, I have witnessed first-hand the magic that happens at Dwight – as well as the remarkable progress the School has made over the years. Your generosity is at the heart of these advances.
Susan Kessler
Hard-working volunteers, too, have fueled the success of the Foundation’s various initiatives: Foundation Board Trustees, Annual Fund Committee, Senior Gift Committee, the Parents Association, and the Alumni Council. Their efforts to build community and bring more resources to the Foundation have been inspiring. We are most appreciative, however, of Chancellor Stephen H. Spahn’s visionary leadership and deep belief that every student has a “spark of genius.” Now, Head of School Dianne Drew and her outstanding team have been carrying that vision forward seamlessly. Thank you for your wonderful contributions to help Dwight make even more magic in 2012-13! Best Regards,
Susan Kessler (Parent ’10 and ’14) Dwight School Foundation, Trustee Board Chair

Three Pillars of the Dwight Community
Personalized Learning We focus on developing each student’s unique “spark of genius.” Whether connecting a student with an exceptional mentor, designing tailor-made enrichment, crafting a special study abroad opportunity, or providing a novel program or tutorial, Dwight goes out of its way to recognize and foster each student’s gifts and talents. No two student journeys are the same. Community We inspire and educate our students through leadership training to improve their communities. Dwight students undertake service projects locally and internationally and produce written reflections to demonstrate their learning and their impact. Dwight students are prepared to serve their communities wherever they go. Global Vision We encourage students to see challenges from a global perspective. Our students interact with peers and faculty from forty countries, follow the rigorous International Baccalaureate curriculum, select from a wide array of foreign languages, and travel abroad for service projects, athletic competitions, and student leadership conferences. Dwight New York is the flagship campus and founding member of The Dwight Schools, including campuses and programs in London, Canada, Beijing, and Seoul.

Dwight’s Class of 2012 New Conference Room As a thank you for the efforts of the Class of 2012 Senior Gift Committee, which raised $112,200 for the Foundation, Dwight School has named the beautiful new conference room in 291 Central Park West in its honor. The new conference room was part of a large summer renovation to ensure that the main reception space reflects the School’s proud 140-year history, innovative spirit, and global footprint. The Class of 2012 Conference Room, which is already being used by students, faculty, parents, alumni, and admissions, will undoubtedly serve as a source of pride for Dwight students and graduates for years to come.

New Parent Welcoming Committee — This group helps us welcome newcomers into
Faculty Valentine’s Day Breakfast — On Valentine’s Day, the PA offers teachers and
the Dwight community. Volunteers welcome new Dwight families in all grades (before they begin school) through a variety of activities that are geared toward both the new student and the new parents.
staff a special buffet breakfast to thank them for their dedication and hard work. Parents donate food items and help set up and serve breakfast.
Back to School Evenings — Volunteers hand out information packages and register
parents at our annual parent evenings in September.
Theme Evenings — The PA collaborates with the School to sponsor workshops and lectures for all grades on topics of interest to parents.
School Uniform Sales — Parents are asked to donate their children’s outgrown and
Skating Party — The annual “Skating Under the Stars” ice skating party takes place each year in February. Volunteers are needed to distribute skates and register attendees.
gently used uniforms so that they may be re-sold to Dwight families at a very nominal charge. PA volunteers sort clothing and staff the sales.
Spirit Day — Spirit Day is a Dwight community tradition for students in preschool
ECD Fall Festival & Book Fair — Parents on the Riverside Campus come together on a
weekend and celebrate the beautiful fall weather with activities such as cupcake decorating, face painting, singing, and dancing. Parent and student volunteers set up and run each activity and help clean up after the event. ;PTV[O` )LU[SL` /V\ZL /HSSV^LLU 7HY[PLZ — Parents assist staff members in plan-
ning, setting up, chaperoning, and cleaning up after the event. Thanksgiving Food Drive Packing Event — Each November, parents and students
gather to prepare a Thanksgiving Dinner for families who are not able to afford a special holiday meal. Parents help students to create the baskets and supply a snack for the basket workers. Book Fair — The Book Fair is an important school wide event that raises money for the
PA, provides books for the School’s libraries and classrooms, and provides families with the opportunity to buy holiday gifts for family and friends. Volunteers help plan and publicize the event, obtain and distribute classroom wish lists and suggested reading lists, and act as chaperones during the event. ECD Toy Drive — Volunteers on the Riverside Campus collect donated toys and gifts for children in need. The parents host a “wrapping party” to wrap all of the donations, which are then donated to a local charity.
all they way through high school. The PA and the School work together to plan and staff various carnival activities for current Dwight families and friends. Money raised is donated to charity. ECD Clothing Sale — Volunteers on the Riverside Campus gather donated clothing
from the community and hold a one-day sale. At the end of the sale, all excess clothing is donated to a local charity. National Teacher Appreciation Week — To celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week each May, parents help the PA brainstorm and execute creative and fun ideas on how to best celebrate our teachers. The Dwight School Foundation’s Annual Fund Committee — Parents and admin-
istrators collaborate to raise critical funds for the Foundation. Annual Fund dollars help support student financial aid and faculty professional development at Dwight School. Safety Patrol Committee — Although one parent of every 1-12 grade Dwight student
is expected to participate in the after-school Safety Patrol, there are sometimes unforeseen circumstances (e.g.: illness) when a parent cannot report on the scheduled date or find a substitute. Volunteers act as substitutes on these rare occasions. Timothy House Community Service Committee — This group assists in finding appropriate and interesting community serviced projects that involve students in grades 1-5.

Volunteer Thank You Reception
The Dwight School Foundation’s mission is to bring additional resources [V ILULÄ[ Z[\KLU[Z HUK MHJ\S[` H[ +^PNO[ :JOVVS [V LUZ\YL [OL OPNOLZ[ quality education possible. In June, Trustee Chair Susan Kessler hosted a reception at the River Club to acknowledge the following groups that play a critical role in supporting this mission: Dwight School Foundation Trustees advise and work in conjunction with the Chancellor,
Head of School, and the Foundation’s Advancement Office to think critically about how Foundation resources can positively impact the lives of Dwight students and faculty. The Annual Fund Committee solicits gifts from members of the Dwight community to
provide support for student financial and faculty professional development. The Senior Gift Committee solicits Annual Fund gifts from twelfth grade families and
helps the School choose a legacy project to improve the School. The Parents Association welcomes and connects parents to the community, promotes
volunteerism, encourages attendance at school events, and helps address parent concerns to support faculty and build community spirit. The Alumni Council and Class Representatives help identify and promote meaningful
ways for graduates to get involved with the School and stay connected with each other.
