`Toxic` vegetable oils `not` better than butter London, Nov 9 (ANI): Just when you thought cooking with vegetable oils is a "healthy" alternative to lard and butter, a team of scientists revealed that vegetable oils contain 'toxic' chemical linked to cancer and brain degeneration. Cooking with vegetable oil releases toxic chemicals linked to cancer and even the degeneration of the brain, according to experts. Lard, butter, coconut and
olive oil are all better dietary choices, leading scientists have said - in advice which directly contradicts the NHS, the Independent reported. When heated, corn, sunflower, palm and soya bean oils - often called "vegetable" oils release chemicals called aldehydes which have been linked to various cancers and neurogenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.
Martin Grootveld from DeMontfort University said that a meal fried in vegetable oil such as fish and chips contains 100 to 200 times more aldehydes than the daily limit set by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Using butter, olive and lard in the frying pan, however, was found to produce much lower levels of aldehydes with coconut oil coming out as healthiest.
Yet the NHS has long warned against cooking with butter and lard. The NHS choices website advises: John Stein, emeritus professor of neuroscience at Oxford University, said "If you eat too much corn oil or sunflower oil, the brain is absorbing too much omega 6, and that effectively forces out omega 3.” Olive oil, meanwhile, has been repeatedly linked to health benefits. The English professional boxer said that there were only three things that need to be accomplished before the devil comes home and they are homosexuality being legal in countries, abortion and paedophilia, the Daily Star reported. The 27-year-old heavyweight fighter continued saying that in the 50s and 60s no-one would have thought that homosexuality and abortion would be legalized, then why does it infect people when he says to legalise paedophiles. Fury concluded that his faith and culture was based on the Bible, whereas gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell slammed his comments and the boxer a confused Christian as comparing same-sex love with abortion and paedophilia is offensive.
Akhilesh congratulates mahagathbandhan’s win in Bihar New Delhi, Nov. 9 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday congratulated the mahagathbandhan for their landslide victory in the Bihar Assembly polls. Yadav said that the verdict given by the people was a message to the entire country. “The people will always vote for the party which stays in contact with them
and work for their development,” he said. He also took the opportunity to highlight the work done by his government in Uttar Pradesh. The mahagathbandhan won 178 seats in Bihar, a commanding two-third majority in the 243-member assembly. The Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies had to settle for a mere 58 seats. (ANI)
Nestle India on Monday announced the fresh roll out of Maggi to markets, thus giving an eve of Diwali gift to the people of the nation. “I am truly delighted to be able to give back Maggi to the home it belongs, which is millions of consumers, who have loved this brand for all these years. So, it’s a very very happy moment coming on Dhanteras, on the eve of Diwali, this is our small gift to the consumers in India as they celebrate the festive season,” Suresh Narayanan, Chairman and Managing Director of Nestle India told ANI in an exclusive interview here. “Maggi has been around for 32 years. It is a pioneer. It is a brand that has took the test of time. It has defined eating habits. It has been part of relationships, consumer repertoire of consumption in all these years,” he added. Narayanan asserted that quality and safety is at the core of their organisation. “Quality equals trust for us. We will take the journey forward in an active, engaging manner with the con-
able to establish with them that the Maggi that they had yesterday, today and tomorrow is of the same quality and it is absolutely hundred percent safe,” he said. Nestle India had announced earlier their stand has been vindicated after 100 percent of Maggi Noodles samples sent from the newly manufactured stocks tested by three laboratories were cleared. Maggi is presently manufacturing at Nanjangud (Karnataka), Moga (Punjab) and Bicholim (Goa). For the other two locations at Tahliwal and Pantnagar, they have been engaging with the relevant authorities in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand to obtain directions for commencing the manufacture of the noodles. It maybe recalled that an officer of the UP Food Safety and Drug Administration, who was based in Barabanki, had ordered tests on a dozen samples of Nestle’s Maggi instant noodles at the state laboratory in Gorakhpur, and asked for repeat tests at the Central Food Laboratory in Kolkata, a referral lab. The
check Nestle’s claim that Maggi had none. Both tests found MSG; in addition, the Kolkata lab found “very high quantities” of lead — 17.2 parts per million — according to the concerned authorities in Uttar Pradesh. The the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had ordered Nestle to withdraw all nine variants of Maggi instant noodles from the market in the first week of June this year, terming them “unsafe and hazardous” for human consumption. Thereafter, the multinational food company approached the Bombay High Court against the order. According to Nestle, the FSSAI order of June 5 was based “solely on the test report and not on any risk assessment, communication or risk management.” Nestle had then said that there was no question of Maggi noodles posing a health risk or of Nestle violating the law of the land. This prompted the Bombay High Court to order fresh tests, which resulted in an all clear for Nestle and Maggi eventually. (ANI)

Many kids of the members of the NDA lost the election, and only we two have won the same. So, it is clear that the people of Bihar settled us,” he said. Tejaswi, who won from the Raghopur assembly constituency, said the people of Bihar have voted for ‘gareebon ka raj’ while
countering Prime Minister Modi’s repeated taunts of ‘jungle raj-2’. “The people of Bihar have said that the 15 years was not jungle raj but the rule of the poor. Today again the government has been formed for them. It’s a bad luck for you (BJP-led NDA). You tried a lot and made personal attacks as well but you will have to pay heavily for it now,” he added. The grand alliance bagged 178 seats, while the BJP-led NDA won 58 seats. (ANI)

The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Federation of A’chik Freedom (FAF), Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE), A’chik Youth Welfare Organisation (AYWO) and Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) on Sunday met Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma in Shillong expressing their concern over the High Court order for introduction of AFSPA in Garo Hills. In a statement issued today, the NGOs said that
chief minister has assured that state police were capable of countering the activities of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and other insurgent outfits and there is no need for army. “The Chief Minister said that the frustrated and unemployed youths are mostly the ones prone to sympathising with the GNLA cause”, said the NGOs. According to them, the chief minister assured that government’s flagship programme like basin development is aimed at giving employment opportunities to the youths. The Garo hills does not deserve to be declared “disturbed area” and the implementation of AFSPA for several reasons – the situation created by GNLA does not pose any kind of internal security for
the nation. The conglomeration felt that Meghalaya police is strong enough to counter GNLA and the implementation of AFSPA will be an overreaction, which will only alienate the people defeating the purpose of democracy and integration of the people. “One of the effective ways to curb militancy in North East will be the toning down of the volume of arms smuggling through the porous international border. The Indian government must make sure that its international borders with Bangladesh is secure and strict which will not only solve the problem of influx in Northeast but also curb militancy through effective control of availability of arms through illegal arms trade”, the NGOs said.

Assam, Nagaland Governor conveys Kali Puja and Diwali greetings A Staff Reporter Guwahati, Nov 9: Governor of Assam and Nagaland, PB Acharya has conveyed his greetings and best wishes to the people on the occasion of Kali Puja and Diwali. In a message to the people he has said that, Kali Puja, along with Durga Puja, is the biggest Goddess festival celebrated in many parts of India. This festival is observed on the new moon day of Ashwin month of Hindu calendar. Goddess Kali is prominently worshipped by Bengalis, Assamese and Oriyas. The history of Kali Puja is not very ancient and probably dates back to 17th century where an annual festival dedicated to Kali was observed as mentioned in devotional text Kalika Mangalkavya. Kali Puja gained popularity in 19th century. On this occasion, people worship idols of Goddess Kali with various tantric rites and mantras. According to rituals,
devotees observe meditation throughout night until dawn. I convey my very best wishes to the people of Assam for a joyous and peaceful Kali Puja. Bhagwan Shri Krishna slayed the demon, Narakasura, to liberate the troubled masses from immorality, greed and bad tendencies. Diwali symbolises this conquest of Divine thoughts over all evil tendencies. Diwali can be rightly said to mean igniting the flame of one’s soul with spiritual passion, by reducing all worldly attachments. The increased power of piousness will result in happiness to everyone. May the festival of lights be the harbinger of peace, joy and prosperity. May this Diwali dispel all darkness from our state and shed the light of unity, amity and brotherhood amidst all so that there can be all-round progress and prosperity in Assam. This is stated in a release from the office of the Assam governor.

Tyagi on Monday said that BJP leaders had lost their 'mental stability' after party's dismal show in Bihar polls. "First the Prime Minister's remark on minorities, then VK Singh's remark on Dalits, and now Vijayvargiya ji is comparing his senior party leaders with dog. This is disgraceful, he (Sinha) is a senior party leader and a veteran actor, such statements do not suit a politician," Tyagi told ANI. "Bihar loss has also affected their mental balance, otherwise they would not have made such remarks against
their senior party member," he added. Vijayvargiya had earlier expressed his disappointment over Shatrughan Sinha's remarks over BJP's dismal performance in the Bihar Assembly polls, comparing him to a dog walking past a car and thinking that the car was following it. Shtrughan Sinha on Sunday said ignoring him in Bihar had cost his party a humiliating defeat. "You removed deserving people. You kept 'Bihari Babu' away from Bihar," Sinha had said. T h e Mahagathbandhan won 178 seats in Bihar, a commanding two-third majority in the 243-member assembly. The Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies had to settle for a mere 58 seats. (ANI)

"Prices of essential commodities, railways and even the airlines have gone up. There is absolutely no control over the market and every trader in the nation right now is petrified of what is to come. No one feels safe under the Prime Minister. Even the steel industries have taken a hit. He used to talk about Acche Din and Make in India but has brought Bure Din in the nation," Lalu added. Talking

"The Dalits, poor and the backward castes of Bihar have helped us in delivering this great victory. This mandate is going to affect the Centre in Delhi and the nation. The BJP kept talking about 'vikas', but it was not reflected in their campaign. Bihar polls: BJP defends PM, says he remains 'most popular leader' New Delhi, Nov 9: Attempting to downplay its debacle in Bihar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday slammed the barrage of attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asserted that he still remained the 'most popular' leader in the country. "In every election, the Prime Minister is the tallest leader of the BJP. He is the principle architect of the BJP's success over the past few years. Without his leadership in the party, things would have been very difficult. He remains the most popular leader in the
country today. Just because we have lost the assembly election does not mean our appeal has diminished," BJP spokesperson GVL Narsimha Rao told ANI. Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also defended the Prime Minister, saying the Opposition must not use 'fiction and frustration' as a measure to celebrate their win. "It's not like this is the first time that the BJP has ever lost. We don't drink an elixir of victory before every polls. We have tasted both loss and triumph. We

There is absolutely no need to drag the number of rallies the Prime Minister conducted in Bihar since it is of no use now," Naqvi told ANI. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had yesterday launched a blistering attack on Prime Minister Modi post the grand alliance's landslide victory in Bihar, saying it is a defeat of hatred, arrogance and anger. "This is a message for Modi ji. The message is clear that Modi ji, the RSS
and BJP cannot divide this country. You cannot win the election by making the Hindus fight against Muslims. This is not a nation of caste and religion, this is the country of all and there should be love and brotherhood in this country," said Gandhi. "I want Mr. Modi to tone down his arrogance as it will be good for him and the nation as well," he added. Uncertainty over the TMC takes a stand against Left front led SMC death of a constable Shillong, Nov 9: Amid reports reaching the police from villagers that kidnapped Havildar Khomraj Bhattarai, hailing from Shillong may have been killed, police have said that they can neither confirm nor deny such reports. "We do not have confirmed information in this regard, though on Friday, there were a lot of rumours and inputs from people of the area where he was abducted that the kidnappers had killed him," DGP Rajiv Mehta said. The whereabouts of another civilian from Assam who was kidnapped along with the havildar on November 6 is yet to be known. The police chief asserted that those who were behind the kid-
napping were GNLA cadres led by its commander Philliport Shira. A police source, said that unless the body of the havildar is recovered, rumours cannot be believed. The source added that the pattern appears to be that of the slain IB official and the trader who were killed by ASAK last month. Can't satisfy 'everyone' in a democracy: Parrikar on OROP row New Delhi, Nov. 9: With the resurgence of the One Rank One Pension (OROP) row, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday said that every one had the right to put forth their demand in a democracy, but that did not mean that 'every demand' could be satisfied. "Look, we have fulfilled the main one rank one pension demand including the VRS. This is a democracy and one has the right to put forth their demand, but they can't expect it to be fulfilled every time. You fulfil one demand and another one springs up," Parrikar told reporters here. However, he added that the commission will look into any remaining problems even though the basic, core issue has been addressed. The government had earlier notified the implementation of the OROP scheme that will guaran-
tee equal pension to military personnel retiring at the same rank with the same length of service, regardless of the date of retirement. The Notification, however, failed to impress veterans are continuing with their agitation. "This is not acceptable as it amounts to one rank, five pensions. It is against the definition of OROP as accepted by Parliament twice," Major General Satbir Singh (retd) told the reporters. The veterans also announced that they would return their medals, and would observe a 'black Diwali' on November 11. The veterans are also gearing up to restart their 'fast unto death' at Jantar Mantar beginning next week. Veterans have listed seven deviations in the announcement, including annual equalisation, 2013-2014 financial

PM Modi's foreign policy has yielded 'zero' results: Congress New Delhi, Nov. 9: The Congress on Monday criticized Prime MinisterNarendra Modi's foreign policy, saying his 14 months of diplomacy has yielded 'zero' results for India "Prime Minister has travelled abroad 29 times in last 14 months, this may be his 30th visit. And eventually the sum total of Mr. Modi's diplomacy is zero nothing comes out of his visits except some chest thumping here and there. And accepting that people of India are rejecting him so may be his hunger for crowds abroad is what takes him out of the country so often," Congressleader Manish Tewari told. Taking a jibe at the BJP over its humili-
ating defeat in the Bihar Assembly polls, Tewari said the ruling party at the Centre should ponder over its drubbing in the state. "Success has many fathers and failure has none. One clear message which comes out of Bihar is that people are not prepared to allow the RSS and the BJP to alter the fundamental construct of this country," said Tewari "The Hindus are also not comfortable with the attempts by the RSS and the NDA Government to turn India into a 'Hindu Pakistan'. So the sooner they give up this agenda, the better it would be for them," he added. The grand alliance bagged 178 seats, while the BJP-led NDA won 58 seats in Bihar. (ANI)

Jan lokpal bill unlikely in winter session New Delhi, Nov 9: The anti-graft Jan Lokpal bill is unlikely to see the light of the day even during the winter session beginning on 18 November. Unlike in its earlier 49day tenure in 2013-14, the AAP government wants to exercise "due diligence" in bringing the legislation - a tardy process. "We have decided to do everything as per required procedure unlike last year when the Lokpal legislation was sought to be pushed through in the assembly regardless of the prior approval of the central government," said a
Delhi government official. A government source said that the antigraft legislation was yet to be accorded clearance by the Delhi cabinet prior to being referred to Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung, who, in turn, will forward it to the union home ministry which will then consult the law ministry on it the stipulated process. An AAP insider, privy to the decision-making process in the Arvind Kejriwalled party, said there were more important tasks that needed attention. "Providing food and shelter to the
common man in the national capital is far more important," said the AAP insider. Considering the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government's thorny equation with the Centre, all this is unlikely to happen before the session that is not even a fortnight away. On 14 February, 2014, Mr Kejriwal had resigned as chief minister of Delhi after the Congress and the BJP had opposed the introduction of the antigraft bill over it not being approved by the Centre. However, exactly a year after that, the AAP came back to power with
67 seats in the 70-member assembly. If enacted, the bill will set up an ombudsman which will probe corruption charges against public functionaries, including the chief minister. In the run-up to the assembly polls in February, the Jan Lokpal was one of the main planks of the anti-graft party. The government had said it would table the bill in the Monsoon session. On 28 September, Kejriwal took to Twitter, saying that the bill was almost ready and the government should be able to present it in the winter session. (Agencies)

PM Modi lays thrust on Lok Adalats that ignoring him in Bihar indeed had cost his party a humiliating defeat. "You removed deserving people. New Delhi, Nov. 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday drew attention to the importance of Lok Adalats in helping the poor to get justice. "I am happy that discussions are being held on how the poor will get justice. I have been able to learn a lot by being here. There is so much concern being shown for the poor, but there is little awareness about it," he said while addressing a
conference on the occasion of Legal Services Day. Prime Minister Modi highlighted his agenda of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' and said that there must be 'Sabka Nyay' (justice for all). The Prime Minister also asked the law universities in the country to make their contribution to his idea of 'Sabka Nyay'. "Our law universities should give special assignments to the students to do
research on Lok Adalats across the country. They should submit reports and give their suggestions. The students should know what the Lok Adalats are," he said. "With legal awareness, there must also be institutional awareness. Normal people are willing to bear injustice but they stay away from the courts. Lok Adalats have bridged this gap," he said. Prime Minister Modi highlighted that there are
more than 15 lakh Lok Adalats in the country which have delivered justice to 8.5 crore people. (ANI)

Results from the five other states were not yet known, he added. It was not yet clear whether the NLD would win the two-thirds of seats in parliament it needs to form the first democratically elected Myanmar government since the early 1960s. But, with a first-pastthe-post system for winning constituencies, a commanding lead in the popular vote makes it likely. The election was a landmark in the country's unsteady journey to democracy from the military dictatorship that made it a pariah state for so long. It is also a moment that Suu Kyi will relish after spending years under house arrest. (Agencies)
John Kerry congratulates people of Myanmar on historic election a democracy that respects the rights of all - a testament to the courage and sacrifice shown by the people of Burma over many decades, Kerry said."While these elections were an important step forward, we recognize that they were far from perfect," he said. There remain important structural and systemic impediments to the realization of full democratic and civilian government, including the reservation of a large number of unelected seats for the military; the disfranchisement of groups of people who voted in previous elections, including the Rohingya; and the
disqualification of candidates based on arbitrary application of citizenship and residency requirements, Kerry said.Noting that the US along with the domestic and global observers have closely monitored the electoral process, he
After Nawaz visit, Pak's 'real' Sharif heads to US Washington, Nov 9: Washington DC is not a very big city by world capital standards, but evidently this town ain't big enough for two Sharifs from Pakistan to visit at the same time. Three weeks after the country's enfeebled PM Nawaz Sharif visited the White House to meet President Obama, the nation's army chief General Raheel Sharif will arrive here on a trip where real business is expected to be conducted.General Sharif will not be meeting President Obama, but there is little doubt that Washington regards him as the "real Sharif" and the "big Sharif", with whom it can do business, although it is not clear if he is seen as the better or worse of the two Sharifs. The US seldom

were condemned. The Pakistani military itself has made no secret of the fact that it is the real power in the country. The military made the announcement about General Sharif's visit, with the army PR, three-star Lt Gen Asim Bajwa, tweeting that "#COAS will visit USA from 15-20 Nov. Will hold meetings with mil and political leadership on wide ranging security issues."The sheer chutzpah of an army shill
announcing that the general will be holding meetings with the political leadership of a country he is visiting would be surprising anywhere except in the case of Pakistan where the khakhis have long called the shots behind a civilian facade. The current military dispensation has been even more ruthless in asserting its primacy. Just days before PM Nawaz Sharif embarked on his visit to US last month, his NSA Sartaj Aziz was summarily relieved of his post and replaced with a retired three-star general, Naseer Khan Janjua. Janjua effectively became the civilian government's minder to ensure it did not cave into US pressure during the Washington visit.Such military over-
sight and control is now quite common across world capitals with Pakistan's khaki-designated minders even reporting to Rawalpindi's military intelligence establishment on the various ambassadors appointed by the civilian government, according to sources familiar with the workings of Pakistani embassies abroad. In fact, several key ambassadorships are held by retired military generals in an open display of who really calls the shots in a country that is only notionally a democracy. None of this has prevented any of the US administrations to continue the tedious facade of dealing with the powerless civilian governments. (Agencies)
With supplies halted, key drugs running out of stock Kathmandu, Nov 9: Obstruction of supplies to Nepal for more than last 40 days at Nepal-India border points has resulted in critical shortage of life-saving drugs, affecting thousands of patients in hospitals and health facilities.Hospital officials in Kathmandu have warned that health facilities would run out of their stocks in two weeks if situation does not improve, which could put thousands of patients at risk of suffering far-reaching health complications.Referral hospitals including Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Bir Hospital and Shahid Gangalal National Heart Centre, are fast running out of their stocks of life-saving drugs, including adrenaline and atrophin that are used for heart patients."If we do not get the consignments of drugs languishing at border points, our services will be critically affected," said Dr Uttam Shrestha, Director of
Manmohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Centre.Essential medicines for patients being treated in the Intensive Care Units are already in short supply in major hospitals in Kathmandu, while reagent stock of laboratories is depleting. Radiology units are also struggling to provide diagnostic results due to lack of films.Dr Keyoor Gautam, Chairman of Jawalakhel-based Samyak Diagnostics, said lack of test tubes and fuel has forced them to limit their operation hours, at least by a couple of hours every day.Officials at the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) said they have agreed to ferry essential drugs via air routes and are committed to ensuring smooth functioning of health services.Dr Guna Raj Lohani, chief of Curative Division at MoHP, said the ministry is working to bring essential medicines from other countries including Thailand. Health policy
experts have said restriction in supplies is against the World Health Organisation Constitution, to which Nepal and India are signatories. The WHO Constitution identifies health as fundamental human right. Dr Suniti Acharya, senior health policy analyst and former WHO representative to Bangladesh, said people have not been able to access health services due to acute fuel crisis. Pregnant women, new mothers and babies have been affected the most, she said. Patients of non-communicable diseases too are bearing the brunt of acute shortage of medicines, as they need to take medicines on regular basis, and failing to do so could have serious health impacts."The UN agencies including the WHO and Unicef have failed in their advocacy role. They must speak up when people in Nepal are being deprived of health services," said Dr Acharya. (Agencies)
said the international community will continue to watch the vote counting process and encourage all parties to help ensure the tabulation is transparent and credible and any complaints are addressed promptly, transparently and
appropriately. The election has the potential to be an important step towards greater peace, prosperity and democracy for the people of Burma, he noted."We encourage the political leaders in the country to work together in the spirit of national unity and democratic reform to seek what is best for the country," he added."A peaceful postelection period is crucial for stability and maintaining the confidence of the people in the credibility of the electoral process and the overall political transition. The US remains committed to supporting
the people of Burma in their pursuit of democracy, development and national reconciliation going forward," Kerry added.Yesterday, millions of people exercised their franchise in a historic general election in which opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi's party was expected to secure an easy victory.Nobel Laureate Suu Kyi was barred from the presidency by the army-scripted constitution. A quarter of seats were reserved for the military. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslim minorities were excluded from voting. (Agencies)
Govt-Morcha talks postponed Kathmandu, Nov 9: The talks between the government and agitating Madhesi Morcha scheduled for today has been postponed citing need for further homeworks for the meet.Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Kamal Thapa who leads the government talks team tweeted about the postponement of the

Pakistan, Afghan unofficial talks begin today
Islamabad, Nov 9: Pakistani and Afghan members of the civil society and analysts will hold two-day unofficial dialogue in Islamabad on Nov: 9-10, to discuss ways how to remove differences between the two countries. The Center of Research and Security Studies (CRSS) in partnership with its Afghan counterpart DURAN Research and Analysis (DRA) is launching a major Pakistan- Afghanistan Track 1.5/II project "Beyond Boundaries", as part of its efforts to help improve relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, a statement said. The Beyond Boundaries comprises two working groups i.e. Regional Security Group, and Civil Society and Youth Group, aimed at facilitating and promoting people-to-people contacts. The first in a series of seven meetings - the Youth and Civil Society Group- is taking place from November 9-10 at
Islamabad and has assumed unusual significance because of the current tensions and the stalled dialogue between the two governments. The arrival of the Afghan Civil Society and Youth delegation marks the resumption of dialogue between non-governmental and political stakeholders from the two countries to the backdrop of a politically difficult and challenging environment. The Track 1.5/ 11 becomes important also because the bilateral relationship has been fraught with mutual mistrust been the proxy battleground for complicated regional relationships. An unstable Afghanistan-Pakistan relationship is fundamentally detrimental to peace and development in the region. Initiatives like Beyond Boundaries will bring together influential government and non-governmental stakeholders who can help lessen tensions, address misconceptions, and revive some
level of confidence; and eventually urge both governments and key stakeholders away from the prior behavior of confrontation and an antagonistic-approach towards a more trust and collaborative-based approach for peace, security, and regional cooperation. The working groups on regional security and civil society will address varied themes that are important in the peace process between Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is also supposed to build upon existing and increase future people to people contact. The key objectives of the initiative are: expanding the peace constituency through friendship groups in both countries; improving support for better Afghanistan-Pakistan relationship through dialogue among the influential stakeholders and informing policy makers through consensus recommendations. When one suffers setback, another rises Topsy-turvy Indian politics The result of the Bihar election poll is typically being hard on and in BJP's face. The result once again proved that nothing can be predicted before the result. The game of election can change anytime towards anyone. When almost all Indians thought that Narendra Modi with the "NAMO" mission will be successful in establishing the empire of BJP in the whole of India, at that very time BJP had a discouraging lose at the Bihar polls. Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar is all set for a third term as Bihar chief minister as the grand alliance surged past the majority mark and left the BJP-led coalition far behind in the counting of votes for one of India's most politically-crucial states. Data from the election commission's website for 240 of the state's 243 seats showed the RJD-JD(U)-Congress alliance led in 166 seats, an emphatic victory over the NDA that could only win around 66 seats, belying all predictions of a closely-contested election. Many supporters of RJD-JD(U)-Congress even termed this victory as the the defeat of hatred, arrogance and anger. After the result many supporters of RJD-JD(U)-Congress also asked the Prime Minister to cut down on his foreign trips and campaign speeches and instead "work for the farmers and the youth". This is the second straight electoral setback for the BJP after its massive Lok Sabha win last year and a victory in a string of state polls. It was swept aside in the Capital by the Aam Aadmi Party earlier this year. The state elections assumed national significance during a bitter, high-octane campaign where Modi addressed 30 rallies and may lead to opposition parties coming together nationally. This may cost the government dearly in the upcoming winter session of Parliament where a belligerent Opposition is likely to stall the NDA's legislative agenda. The BJP which was celebrating when the initial trends showed them ahead, sobered down after the picture changed. The Congress outdid expectations, leading in 19 of the 41 seats it contested, a four-fold increase over its earlier tally of four seats. The party's upbeat mood was evident from vice-president Rahul Gandhi's tweets. "This is a victory of unity over divisiveness. Humility over arrogance. Love over hate. A victory of the people of Bihar," he tweeted. The elections also marked a comeback for former chief minister Lalu Prasad, who was all but written off a few years ago mired in corruption scandals and plummeting popularity. His Rashtriya Janata Dal emerged the biggest winner with 75 seats, leaving behind not only the BJP at 60 seats but also its ally Janata Dal(United) at 73. Lalu was targeted repeatedly by the BJP that raked up fears of a return to Jungle Raj - a reference to the 15 years of RJD rule that saw widespread lawlessness and little development. Lalu's 2010 loss was also the year Nitish Kumar stormed to power in Patna, then in alliance with the BJP, on the back of massive discontent against the RJD, especially among the Mahadalits. The JD(U)-BJP coalition ruled the state for the next eight years till Nitish walked out of the 17-year-old alliance in 2013 over Narendra Modi's elevation as the NDA's chief campaigner for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

French Revolution was one of the most savage and blood shedding revolutions in history. The fiercest and the dreadful of all during this time period was the guillotine, it never ceased dripping in blood of the revolutionist as well as that of the ruler class. The Revolution had given many things to the world, and the most brilliant was the man we know as Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon Bonaparte could be truly called a product of the revolution. It was this time period that raised his stature from a simple soldier to the greatest military commander in the history of the war. In opposition to the monarchism, his was a true fight for the people and their rights. But ironically, the same Napoleon who became Messiah of the people for dismantling monarchism was circumstantially bound so much so that he himself had to be the Monarch of French eventually! Whole his life he dreamt for a unified Europe, Europe that is free of war and savage, poverty and suffering; a Europe that will devote all its time in the welfare of the people. And to materialize his dream and aim, he undertook all the possible means of his time, including military. His consistent involvement in war was vehemently opposed by one of the most influential lady of that time, Madame De Steal. A celebrated conversational eloquence and political
intellectual, her influence in the history of French cannot be denied. She was there in each and every fight and suffering of France with her writings, influencing people and the society. Napoleon of that time was the synonym for victory, and the world was at his mercy. There was nothing that he could not do, and there was none to whom he need to afraid of or care for. But this mighty emperor if did fear anybody then it was Madame De Steal. His fear was not the person called Madame Steal, but her quintessential knowledge and intellect in front of which Napoleon always felt defeated. Napoleon feared her because, "She teaches people to think who never thought before, or who had forgotten how to think." Her writing had such a great influence on the masses that Napoleon Bonaparte had to threaten her of dire consequences. Madame De Steal is a classic example of how a pen is mightier than the sword. If we go back to the history, we have Bankim Chandra C h a t t e r j e e ' s AnandMath, the novel that has the immortal song VANDE MATARAM. No one would deny that it was this song and the opening lines that consistently fueled courage and the patriotism to our freedom fighters. A slogan of Vande Mataram was enough to stir the masses. The effect of the book and the song was so immense that British had to burn and ban the book. Rosa Luxemburg influenced the War time Germany not only by her left winged politics, but more prominently by her writings. The 'Spartacus Leagues' that carry her messages in the form of letters, pamphlets and articles opposing the war and Govt. became a weapon against which there was no shield with
the Government. Her writings and its effect was so immense that the German Government had nothing with them to stop her voice than to kill her. History is full of such mighty pens that had shaken the monarch, despotic government and the unruly rulers, and that too in the time period when those who had the power had it absolutely. But today's world is a different world, a world that is civilized, conscious and jealously safeguarding individual's rights, and the common people's voice has become a voice robust enough to be listened. It is a real surprise seeing our litterateurs taking a mean of protest which is so divergent to their nature. Do our writers and artists lack confidence in their genre, or they are politically influenced to do so? Picasso showed his protest by creating Guernica. The war devastated humanity has no better platform than in the painting of Picasso. Karl Marx's book singlehandedly established the worker power in the world dominated by the capitalist where as Salman Rushdie and Tashlima Nashrin have shaken the very foundation of the Islamic orthodoxy. Paul Robson by his song revolutionized the Latin America and became the profound voice of the Civil Right movement. His blended talent as athletics, artistry and humanitarian is a legacy. The Award returning parade that goes on these days is a cause for concern, in the sense that it is a manufactured one. Despite controversy at the nature of the award giving and selection procedure, Sahitya Academy Award has its importance; in fact all the awards that a government gives. It bears more importance when seen from the prospective of the outer world. It gives a wrong mes-
sage that everything is not fine in India when illuminati of this award return it. What happened in Dadri was an unfortunate event that should be condemned. But it is foolish to demand that Prime Minister should say something on this event. Nevertheless, it is not logical to pursue PM to comment in almost every happening in the country. Our so called intelligentsia should understand that it is election time, Bihar undergoes voting, in the next Assam is ready, and the once dominating and mighty Congress is almost uprooted. At this juncture, it should be obvious to understand that any event that tries to cater national attention may be a manipulated one. To become the victim of somebody's game plan is mere foolishness. The sheep - race begins with Nayantara Sehgal returning the Sahitya Academy Award. It is interesting to note that she never thought the nation was suffering from intolerance and religious fascist from 84 to 86s. Nayantara Sehgal received her Sahitya Academy Award in the year 1986, just two years after the Sikh massacre in 1984. The aftermath scenario of India at the assassination of Indira Gandhi made whole of the army, police and the Government a dead enemy of the Sikhs, killing almost
8000 Sikhs, brutally, savagely and inhumanly. Gang-rape and extermination of turbanedheaded people was the only work performed by the Indira Supporter. And the newly elected PM Mr. Rajiv Gandhi had his famous comment: "When a big tree falls, the earth shakes." How come that Nayantara Sehgal remained unaffected by the religious intolerance shown to a minority community by a mighty Govt? Was the democracy not shattered; was the secularism of the country not defied then? Or was it due to the fact that she is the kith and kin of the Nehru family? Mrs. Sehgal Award returning act is ill motivated, and there is no doubt about it. Things that cause bewilderment is how other writers too jumped into the show. How genuine is the cause of opposition; it becomes meaningless when there is room for doubt on actions that meant protest. The writers and the artists have unmistakably shown their selective emotions. And that has caused all this sorts of arguments and counter arguments. We should be in no doubt that there is some changes awaiting us. The dynastic rule has been eliminated after a tedious wait and suffering. BJP, RSS has been waiting and preparing their ground for long. Now when they came to power, that too in more
than enough majority, how can a sensible person think that they will forget their aims and objectives? When a Muslim can become a member of death squad and can kill and be killed in the name of Allah despite being a computer gig and engineer, why we always want that a Hindu will be always a secular and tolerant Hindu? Hindu extremism is a reality, and we have to accept it. It is not the beginning of fascism. Fascism is pre-existing in India. It is nothing to do with saffronization, it is nothing to do with religious intolerance. It was an unfortunate event, or so to say a series of unfortunate events that lead to this point. It is time when we should be clear what we mean by Secularism. Secularism doesn't imply to create hue and cry whenever anything happened to the Muslim. There are others also who falls in the category of minority. The work of a writer, an artist is to create atmosphere of trust and belief, not to do politics. Renaissance is the best example to be followed in this regard. The whole Europe was changed by an apolitical effort. Changes that Renaissance brought in Europe was change arising out of creativeness, not by mere slogan and wanton opposition.
Celebrate a Pollution free, Environmentally Safe Diwali
Sir, With the Festival of Lights round the corner there is promise of fun and laughter. But in the midst of all that, we should keep in mind the fragile state of the earth and also those less privileged than yourself. Traditionally, Diwali was celebrated by lighting
earthen lamps signifying the triumph of good over evil. For most people lighting of firecrackers is the highlight of Diwali. Brighter the sparkles, louder the noise the greater the thrill!! In fact to many of us, these aesthetic forms of light seem so appropriate and most essential when celebrating the 'Festival of Lights'. But little do people realize that in our increasingly populated and polluted cities, the temporary joy of watching the firecrackers is soon replaced by the intense air pollution caused by these. The toxic substances used in the firecrackers release toxic gases that are harmful to the health of all living beings. The high level of noise generated by the crackers cause immense suffering to birds and animals. Besides, Diwali crackers are also dreaded by the sick and the ailing. Sadly, few of us realise that the firecrackers used on Diwali are mostly made by very young children. Since the substances being handled are extremely toxic many of these child labourers get sick and die in their early teenage years. Recent studies have also shown that the large amounts of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen fumes that are released when crackers are burst cause immense damage to the environment and to the quality of air that we breathe. Besides humans, the effects of the pollution and the loud noise emitted by the crackers also takes its toll on animals, especially dogs, who have an accentuated power of hearing and the loud noise makes them cower with fear as they are unable to fathom what is going on around them. Plants, too,
wilt due to the effect of extreme air pollution. Also the noise levels in the Indian cities during the night of Diwali festival were also found to be higher. The deterioration of ambient air quality due to the anthropogenic activity such as the use of firecrackers in the megacities of India has significant impacts on human health on a regional scale. Stateless child born every 10 minutes: United Nations Being born with no nationality can cause children irreparable harm, the United Nations said on Monday, estimating that a stateless child is born every 10 minutes, notably as a consequence of armed conflict. "In the short time that children get to be children, statelessness can set in stone grave problems that will haunt them throughout their childhoods and sentence them to a life of discrimination, frustration and despair," UN refugee agency chief Antonio Guterres said in a new report. The UNHCR report highlights consequences such as children being deprived of medical care, education and future access to employment. "In countries hosting the 20 largest stateless populations, at least 70,000 stateless children are born each year" -- or one about every 10 minutes, said the UNHCR, which is aiming to eliminate statelessness by 2024. The report, to be launched by Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday, notes that in 30 countries national documentation is required to access basic medical treatment, while in 20 countries stateless children cannot even be vaccinated. The problem is particularly severe among refugees affected by conflict, the report said. In Syria, children
can acquire nationality only through their fathers, but the four-year civil war has forced more than four million people to flee the country and left 25% of refugee families fatherless. Women who fled Syria while pregnant told UN interviewers that their hopes of one day returning home with their families could be crushed without a birth certificate to prove that their children are Syrian. The UN agency proposed several measures to eliminate the scourge of statelessness, including the reform of discriminatory laws that prevent mothers from passing on nationality to their children. Children should also automatically become nationals of the country where they are born, UNHCR further said. The report identified discrimination as the main cause of statelessness, pointing to 20 countries where nationality can be denied on the basis of ethnicity, race or religion. In some countries, laws prohibiting such discrimination are ignored in practise, such as theDominican Republic where people of Haitian descent have often been denied Dominican citizenship, UNHCR said. Globally, "several million children are watching their childhoods slip away without the sense of belonging and protection that comes with a nationality," the report said.

Corruption in public life Teson Abo Corruption in simple terms may be described as "an act of bribery". It has also been described as "the use of public power for private profits in a way that constitutes a breach of law or a deviation from the norms of society". Corruption is spread over in the society in several forms. Of these, the major ones are: bribery, nepotism, misappropriation, patronage, favouritism, etc. In fact, corruption is a multifaceted problem giving rise to a numberless social, economic, political and moral crises in the society. Today politics is a lucrative career. Individuals take to politics as a profitable career to secure easy money. However, politics without ethics is a disaster. Many of today's leaders are hypocrites and have betrayed the country and the people. Immorality in politics has become so pervasive that a common man has no social security, medical facilities, efficient public transport system and freedom from exploitation. It is well known that a large number of politicians, not only in India but also almost in all countries are corrupt. People never feel shocked when politicians' corruption is divulged. Honest politicians are a rare breed today. Corrupt politicians not only did go scot-free, unharmed and
unpunished but they also managed to strut on the political stage as honourable leaders. There was a time when mafia help the politicians to win elections. Now, for some years the mafia want their share in power. Certain political leaders are stalking the government. They come to the help of the ruling party to bale it out inside or outside the parliament. In 2009 general election 150 MPs with criminal record were elected to the parliament. Over sixty-five years of independence are mired in corruption. The country needs meaningful change in governance. India ranks near the bottom of International Corruption Index. In this land of ours, while a thief who commits theft for feeding his hungry children after remaining unemployed for a long time is promptly put behind bars, those who plunder the country masquerade as honourable citizens with all the paraphernalia merely because they happen to be bigwigs in politics or close to centres of power. Indian polity is in a sorry plight. Politics has become synonymous with unethical practices. Today no party is free from the influence of criminals. Though there were never any doubts that such a nexus existed, the findings of Vohra Committee Report was not released by the government for about two years. And
What to do if you are spending Diwali away from home What do you first imagine when you think of Diwali? Spending time with family at home? Bursting crackers with your siblings? Visiting your extended relatives? Or maybe a big fat family dinner? And are you looking at spending Diwali alone this year? Work isn't allowing you to be home those few days? Don't be upset. Here are a few tips to make you feel less lonely, and more Diwali-ey this time. 1) Clean your house/ PG You maybe an obsessive cleaner, or maybe someone who likes to live in a mess. But cleaning the house a few days before Diwali will remind you of the time when your mom forced you to clean your room and throw away everything you ever hoarded. This will constantly remind you Diwali is on its way and keep you busy. Recycle those old newspapers, clean those fans, remove the cobwebs, arrange your cupboard. Haven't you seen your mom do everything on her own every year? You've got this! 2) Retail therapy Shop! Yes, shop for new clothes, ethnic ones. Dressing up well will keep you in a good mood and not bring down your spirits. Girls, wear those sarees that you haven't touched and have been lying in your cupboard forever.

when it was released it was only in fragments. In the last 3 decades or so, several scandals and financial irregularities, including paying of massive commissions, payoffs and kickbacks, have been reported in our country. Mostly, it is the chief ministers, ministers, leaders holding important political positions, bureaucrats and big businessmen who are reported to be involved in these scams. But nothing tangible has been done in uncovering, tracing, apprehending, prosecuting and punishing the culprits on the plea of inadequate evidence. It is ostensible that no political leader is willing to show political will to bring the investigation to logical end. They can talk and indulge in breast beating but not expose the fact of corruption. The fact deserves the attention of the people in view of how all the political parties got united in objecting to the verdict of the Supreme Court in a related case. They objected to filing the details of their assets, sources of incomes and their criminal records at the time of filing the nominations. Worse still, judiciary itself is in collusion with corrupt politicians and bureaucrats. Criminals in public life are ruling the roost. In present circumstances no light is visible at the end of the tunnel. The situation has grown so much out of control
you didn't stuff yourself with sweets. You can try making some gulab jamuns at home. Making Diwali sweets at home will keep you occupied and bring in the festive feeling. You can share a plate of sweets with your neighbours. And the advantage of doing this? When that plate returns, it will be filled with all sorts of Diwali delicacies! #AwesomeIndianTraditions (Psst... in case the experiment fails, buy some fancy sweets from outside. led to adulteration of eatables, spurious drugs and shortage of many consumer items and has destabilised governments both at the centre and in the states. Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom. On this account Indians have miserably failed. This kind of nexus is helpful to the politicians. But the things took ugly turn when they started demanding share in the exercise of political powers. Now the criminals have themselves become politicians. They take the place of pride beside their masters. This is the deadly worm that could happen to Indian democracy. When the criminals become the leaders of the party, the ministers and the chief ministers, the whole society is affected down to a common man in the streets. Government agencies investigating the crimes reveal that the criminals are law unto themselves. How unfortunate it is that the chief ministers charged and convicted of crimes and sent to jail run the government from the prisons because they instal their favourites as chief ministers. Legislatures of all the states, according to a conservative estimate,
have anything between one-third and fourth of history sheeters as members. Corruption in India has become deep-rooted and is galloping unchecked and unhindered. Crime and corruption are two ingredients that make up modern politics even at the highest level of our country. It is tragic that almost all the political parties have collectively rejected the mandate of supreme court regarding the electoral reforms. In accordance with it a candidate for election is required to give the details of the trials, convictions and financial status at the time of filing nomination papers. What a hypocrisy on the part of our custodians of democracy. In any democracy citizens always have the last laugh. Only those leaders should be voted to power as long as they are not tainted and mired in criminality. Indians must realise that it is now or never. In short criminalisation of politics and politicisation of crime has become all pervasive in Indian polity. Crime is rewarded and virtue is out of favour. Therefore, the voters should rise to the occasion and throw the criminal elements out of politics.

Send your families gifts back home. Make a video call too if possible. This will make you feel extremely nostalgic. Now, don't cry. Spend the evening with them. You will distract yourself from all the loneliness you are going through. 9) Make sweets Diwali=Sweets! Diwali isn't Diwali if
that nexus between the criminals and politicians is not limited only to making money or fighting elections. Now this nexus has crossed national border connections as well giving rise to cross border terrorism. Through this connection they have been able to trap ministers and politicians to gain access to Indian security forces. The crimepolitics nexus has become a national risk. As a matter of fact it is unfortunate that democracy in India has been hijacked by the criminal elements. The use of money and muscle power in elections is the order of the day. We should not forget that corruption has affected our society in several ways. Corruption has created violence and lawlessness in the society since the corrupt man has the money power to influence the executors of law to serve him. Corruption has retarded economic development of the country and has given rise to casteism, linguism, and communalism. Corruption has diminished morality and destroyed individual character and has increased black money in the country. Corruption has heightened inefficiency, nepotism, and lethargy and has created indiscipline in all fields of administration, making the life of common man miserable and has reduced the credibility of officials in the eyes of masses. Corruption has
Changlang is all set to enjoy the services of Vodafone after many decades of life with traditional and the lone BSNL services. Off course, in the meantime, Aircel did try their best but owing to some problems they could establish themselves here. It is believed that some anti social elements were behind the reason of Aircel not finding its feet in Changlang. Militancy has been one of the reasons which curtailed the avenues of investment from corporates from outside into this land locked headquarters. The SDOT have been often heard avoiding residing here for fear of extortion demands. The life of a human is more important than a lucrative job posting since life once lost cannot be recovered. At this point, the incumbent officers are correct in their choice but the loss on the part of the citizens who have to bear the brunt of lack of development is immeasurable. On the other hand, many officers have been heard siphoning off the funds in the name of payments to the outlaws as extortion money. There will always be people who would take advantage of the adversity of the situations leaving this poor denizens to believe in the wise saying "There's many a slip 'twixt the cup and the lip". What they call luck is their sole philosophy, since they are robbed by politicians from the east,
officers from the west, militancy from the north and the charlatans (those outsiders who come to the district to mint money and who do not have any part in the development of the locality) from the south. The poor denizens of the district are hard pressed from all sides; just the only way out is to look up at God almighty for deliverance from the miseries of life. There is complete breakdown of human resource development in the first place owing to frustrations and unemployment. Many of the young-
leader. Such partialities lead to disparity in the societies, one section of the people will enjoy the government jobs and another section of the people will remain unemployed most of their lives who are bound to choose two destinies: drugs or guns to ease their pains of frustration. My question is why do we elect an MLA? Off course, to lead a society towards prosperity. If the one who are supposed to lead a society towards prosperity indulge in corruption and partiality, will they be
sters are becoming prey to drugs abuse and militancy and the greatest questions in every conscientious mind are who will bail them out of these two dungeons? Many teenagers are joining militant groups without actually being unaware of the hard life and consequences. Partialities are never a good sign of a right
able to lead us? I know everyone is aware of this question but why always the general masses fail to choose the right leaders? The answer is very simple and evident, stop accepting money during elections for votes. You have no rights to demand for development unless you refrain from accepting money for votes. Yes, this
all will take time to become butterflies from the coconic stage but when would be the right time, I wonder? Towards this, communication is the path breaker for all the development be it social, political, economic, cultural since it helps the management to navigate the executions of the developmental affairs in any area. One must be busy in life to be healthy and wise for the rolling stone gathers no moss. Leaders are born and that's why no true leader tries to be a leader; something happens to them. They have an awareness to do something, but they are always reluctant. Great leaders are reluctant people. Nelson Mandela was like that. He discovered a passion against the oppression that made him a leader. He pursued a purpose. If you want to be a great, don't try to be great. Find your gift and serve it. That's what leaders do. Every human being has the instinct to be a leader but most people on earth will die as a follower. I hope you are not the one. Most people will die as followers not discovering his capability. Your culture will convince you that you have a limitation. Your traditions will bind you as a prisoner to a law leaving no scope for expansion. Your human wisdom will limit you to human society; there is however another realm called spirituality where your inner strengths are discovered and prepares you to realize your destiny.

Decline in export of oilmeals Kochi, Nov 9: The export of oilmeals during October 2015 is reported at just 13,716 tonnes against 2,38,703 tonnes in October 2014, that is down by 94 per cent. The overall export of oilmeals during April-October 2015 is reported at 7,63,113 tonnes against 12,63,073 tonnes during the same period of last year, that is down by 40 per cent, according to the data compiled by The Solvent Extractors' Association of India. Soybean crushing is very much reduced due to continuous disparity and high price of domestic market affecting overall domestic availability of both oils and meals. The export of soybean meal is at a historical low during
current year and reduced month by month and reported 46,980 tonnes compared to 1,40,098 tonnes during the first seven months of the financial year 2015-16. Similarly, rapeseed meal export is also reduced to one-third of last year. Also, capacity utilisation is at the lowest. Industry is passing through very though time and many plants are close down due to disparity in crushing and export, according to a press release. The robust pace of soybean crushings and ample soybean supplies both in the northern and the southern hemisphere kept world market prices of soya meal under pressure and sharply below the year-earlier levels.

PF interest rate for 2015-16 likely to be announced by EPFO on Nov 24 New Delhi, Nov 9: Retirement body EPFO is likely to announce interest rate on PF deposit for 2015-16 at its trustees' meeting on November 24. "The proposal for fixing rate of interest on PF deposits for 2015-16 is likely be discussed and approved in the 209th meeting of EPFO's Central Board of Trustees (CBT) on November 24, 2015," a source said. The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) had provided 8.75 per cent interest on PF deposits for 2013-14 and 2014-15. Speculation are rife that interest rate on savings schemes can come down in view of interest rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of India earlier this year. Lowering of interest on rates on savings scheme will help government to nudge banks to bring down lending rates. After RBI cut interest rate by half a percentage point in September
end, finance ministry had said that it will review rate of interest on small savings scheme. These schemes include Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (MIS), Public Provident Fund (PPF), Post Office Time Deposit Scheme, Senior Citizen's Savings Scheme, Post Office Savings Account, and Sukanya Samriddhi Accounts. "It has also been decided that the government will undertake a review of small saving interest rate also," Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das had said. However, fixing the interest on EPF solely depends on the EPFO's apex decision making body CBT headed by the Labour Minister as the body provides rate of return from its own income. Once the rate of interest is decided and announced by the CBT, it is sent to the Finance Ministry for concurrence. The latter approves the proposal if EPFO has sufficient in-
come to provides the proposed rate of interest on PF from its income during the year without any shortfall. After the approval of Finance Ministry, the rate of interest is notified and credited to the accounts of over five crore subscribers of the body. Apart from rates of interest, the CBT may also take up two separate proposals to allow its subscribers to pledge their future PF contribution to buy low cost houses and to reduce administrative charges from 0.85 per cent to 0.65 per cent of basic wages. Rs 1.25 crore collections in green tax per day Gurgaon, Nov 9: The toll tax contractor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has been collecting around Rs 1.25 crore of Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) every day since the 'green tax' was levied on trucks and other commercial vehicles entering Delhi as per a Supreme Court order. "As per initial reports, contractor SMYR is collecting Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) totalling around Rs 1.25 per day. Exact details of collection are yet to be received as the contractor is working on its software for it," said an SDMC official. Collection of ECC had been started by the contractor as per the Supreme Court order, after a delay of six days, at 124 entry points of the city on the intervening night of November 67. Collection of ECC of Rs 1,300 from trucks and Rs 700 from smaller commercial vehicles was scheduled to begin from November 1 on the order of
the Supreme Court. The apex court, in its order on October 12, had directed Delhi Government and SDMC to charge ECC from trucks and other smaller commercial vehicles entering the city in a bid to check growing pollution in the national capital. The contractor, while agreeing to the responsibility of collecting ECC, had informed the SDMC authorities that the number of commercial vehicles passing through its barriers had gown down by 30 per cent due to the fear of ECC and had asked them to act accordingly to cover the losses. Earlier, the contractor had refused to collect the green tax citing several "practical problems" and had given a legal notice to SDMC, seeking clarification of 11 issues including fall in toll tax revenue. As per the estimates of municipal corporation officials, around 50,000 trucks and commercial vehicles enter Delhi every day via various entry points. (Agencies)

New segments being eyed by Desai Brothers Kolkata, Nov 9: Keeping in mind the globalised Indian, the Mother's Recipe brand, owned by Pune-based Desai Brothers, is eyeing new segments even as it readies its own e-commerce platform, a company official said. The foods division of DBL has a national presence in pickles and culinary pastes. Its largest market share of 30 per cent is in the West. DBL is now exploring its opportunities in segments like 'spreads', as the market for such ready-tocook foods is catching up with global Indians and among nuclear families with fast lifestyles. It also hopes to put up its own e-commerce platform within this year, Sanjay Desai, Executive Director said. The company official was here on Thursday to announce their acquisition of
ELMAC, a 40-year-old city-based brand bought to increase its share in the packaged food industry. In the retail segment, ELMAC products will focus on sauces and condiments and in the food service segment their products will augment the Mother's Recipe range. DBL, which diversified into food business in 2002, under the brand name 'Mother's Recipe' (which it ac-
quired from a Punebased company) has witnessed growth of over 25 per cent CAGR and has a strong presence across India and in West Asia, Australia, U.K., Europe, U.S., Canada and Africa. Its product portfolio in India consists of pickles, condiments pastes, blended spices, ethnic chutneys, papad, ready-to-cook spice mixes and instant mixes. (Agencies)
Flipkart to become more mobile-centric in next 2 years Chennai, Nov 9: Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart will become more mobile-centric in the next two years through adoption of newer technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and social networks, its Chief Product Officer Punit Soni said. He said heavy discount on online purchase may not earn consumer loyalty and help build user base in the long run. "In the next two years, Flipkart will become a very mobile-centric company. It will probably build two or three things based on some of the things you talked about like data and social (network) that will actually allow people to connect even more deeply," Soni said on the sidelines of the Leadership Summit organised by the Indian School of Business. The company has already made a beginning in adopting newer and advanced technologies to become more userfriendly and is gearing up
to meet demand of the ever-growing mobile phone user base in India. "In India, you have probably 20 odd millions of laptops, but one billion are using mobiles... I have to worry about that billion people who will use the phone to buy stuff," he said. To a query on heavy discounts being offered by e-commerce portals using the funds by venture capitalists, he said finally only those companies which have and offer real value to consumers will survive. "At some point, it (PE funds)
will dry up. Those who will have real value will stand in the market. If I have really something to offer beyond those discounts, you will stay with me... The race is not actually to use discounts to get us as many users as possible. The race is to build something people would love even if I did not give discounts," he explained. Soni, however, refused to divulge when the Flipkart expects break-even in its operations and said the immediate focus is to build a better user experience. (Agencies)
AK-47 maker in talks for JV in India to produce arms Mumbai, Nov 9: Russia's Kalashnikov Concern, makers of AK-47 assault rifles, is in advanced discussions with Indian companies to manufacture certain weapons here and is open to sharing technology with local partners. Known as one of the best assault rifles of the 20th century, AK-47s are now being reportedly used
Kalashnikov Concern (formerly Izhmash) chief executive Alexey Krivoruchko. "We are in talks with both public as well as private companies in India. But it is a bit early to offer any specific names, as we are still at negotiations," he said. He added that it is not engaged in any talks with the defence ministry "on our own and if
more by non- state agents than national defence personnel. For many years now, Russia has officially stopped supplying these fine automatic rifles to the country."From the early 2015, discussions are in right earnest, even though several Indian companies have been interested to produce Kalashnikov assault rifles since 2008," said
necessary our Indian partner will handle those issues". Krivoruchko said previous discussions did not yield any results as the interested parties could not obtain the licence to manufacture small arms from the government. He said that excluding cost of utilities and manufacturing facilities, the partners together will have to cough up around USD 100 million
(about Rs 650 crore) to begin production. The quantum of investment will depend on the contribution in the form of land, manufacturing facilities, equipment and so on made by the local partner and on the target level of indigenization to be achieved, he said. On the expected scale of production, Krivoruchko said, "We are looking at least 50,000 items per year initially with and a potential of scaling up production in the future." Whether the company is ready to transfer technology to the partner, he said that "if the project is a success, the local partner will gain access to the most advanced small arms technologies, including high-speed chromium plating, protective coatings, manufacturing of highstrength plastic components". On whether Kalashnikov has identified the models to begin production, Krivoruchko said Indians are primarily interested in the 5.56-mm and the 7.62-mm individual automatic weapons. "However, we are prepared to customise weapons to meet any customer requirements and expand the range of products." (Agencies)

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE Cranberries can help cut antibiotic resistance
Not only cranberries help your health from head to toe, but are also an effective approach to help reduce antibiotic use, according to a recent research. Global experts at the International Conference on Polyphenols and Health presented new evidence, showing how cranberries are poised to be a compelling tool to help reduce antibiotic resistance and oxidative stress. Reporting at the International Conference on Polyphenols and Health (ICPH), the scientists revealed the growing evidence on how cranber-
ries can help curb recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), the second most common type of infection in the body. A lower number of infections would mean less use of antibiotics and less risk of developing antibiotic resistance. In addition, they touched on how the unique blend of polyphenol antioxidants - provided by cranberries may assist in preserving heart and cognitive health, and protect against oxidative stress to help promote overall well-being. Boston University's
Kalpana Gupta said they have long believed in the urinary tract health benefits that cranberries provide, but this new research reveals just how wide-ranging those benefits can be. This new research also builds on other recent findings that revealed drinking cranberry juice cocktail may help manage risks associated with heart disease, diabetes and stroke. The future is fruitful for cranberry and, more importantly, for those who can benefit from its nutritional elements. (ANI)
Dental mistakes that can harm your teeth Our teeth can give us much joy or grief, depending on the way we treat them. Maintaining regular dental hygiene will not only ensure that your pearly whites are among your best features, but will also save you painful and costly trips to the dentist. In spite of knowing what an important role teeth play , a large number of people continue to make these common mistakes. The problem is that we often commit these mistakes without even realising that we're making them. The following are some of the most common dental mistakes people make... Don't use your teeth to tear open a
packet of chips. This puts unnecessary pressure on your teeth and over time will cause them to become loose. Use your fingers or a scissor instead. Are you guilty of chewing on your pens and pencils while using them? This innocuous habit will erode your tooth enamel after a period of time, leading to a number of dental problems. So, the next time you find yourself reaching out for that pen, make it a habit not to put it in your mouth! If you're lucky enough to have
little or no dental issues, don't take it for granted that you don't need to visit the dentist. Annual trips to the dentist will ensure that problems, if any, will get discovered and treated before they become worse. Also, regular cleaning and scaling sessions will ensure that you keep cavities at bay. - Very often, a seemingly harmless habit like nibbling on ice cubes is enough to cause damage to your teeth. Not only do you increase your chances of catching a cold, but you also risk chipping your tooth in the
process. Eating ice regularly affects the delicate soft tissues present in your mouth, making the nerves so sensitive that eating certain foods will cause severe discomfort. - Another habit that many people have is grinding their teeth in their sleep. There could be several reasons for this or even some underlying medical issues. People who grind their teeth often need to wear a mouth guard at night. This will protect teeth because constant gnashing can cause tooth enamel to erode. If you're
adventurous enough to think of getting a tongue piercing done, remember that while it may look cool to you, it also poses certain dangers. Apart from causing an infection in your mouth, it can also cause your tooth to crack if you eat in an incorrect manner. - Those with a sweet tooth need to remember that all that extra candy can lead to cavities if you don't brush your teeth carefully. In fact, flossing is equally important -the sticky residue that candy tends to leave behind can cause a number of dental problems. - Do you brush your teeth correctly? And do you brush for long enough? Brush for at least two minutes and give each corner of your month about 30 seconds. Your brushing technique should comprise wide, circular strokes just along your gums. When you don't brush properly , the accumulated plaque will cause a lot of damage. - It is also important to change your toothbrush every two to three months. After some time, bristles tend to go soft and out of shape, which means that the toothbrush won't clean your teeth as effectively as it is supposed to. And always wipe your toothbrush dry once you're done. Bacteria thrives in moist conditions so leaving it wet is simply inviting trouble. - While using toothpicks now and then is alright, using one after every meal is a strict no-no. Toothpicks can break if used too vigorously and cause damage to your gums. (Agencies)
Make this Diwali eco-friendly Give the festival of lights a green tinge this year by making a few adjustments in your decorations and gifting The auspicious festival of Diwali is bringing a strain on the environment -and on the pocket -as people are forced to spend mindlessly on gifts, cause air and noise pollution with fire crackers and create more waste with plastic packaging and excess food. Avoid these farreaching consequences by going green this Diwali, in a way that will brighten things up for the people around you and harbour well for the environment at large. Green Alternatives To Crackers Do something completely out of the ordinary by entirely giving air-polluting noisy crackers a miss this year. Take your kids for a walk in the wild and collect dry leaves, grass and twigs. Light a bonfire in the evening in the open terrace you would have used to burst crackers, and celebrate with homemade sweets. If you don't have the space for a bonfire, fill coloured balloons with glitter and small pieces of bright coloured paper. Use balloons in festive colours of red, yellow, green and orange. Burst the balloons and dance in the glitter rain with your fam-
ily and friends. Present Handmade Gifts and Cards There's no greater feeling than receiving a card in the mail with a hand drawing from a friend. Get your kids to cut out and do up the handmade cards with glitter and glow paint. It speaks volumes more than the store-bought ones. As for gifts, choose things made from natural materials like a cloth purse or an ahimsa silk saree. Even better is to make the gift yourself. Making the gift yourself adds a personalised touch to it.Also, it would be a pity to use shiny plastic wrap for your gift so put it in a cloth bag with a string attached to it. Make Natural Rangolis Instead of the artificial rangoli colour powders available in the market, why not make a rangoli out of fresh flowers or a kolam made with natural ingredients. Villages in south India make spectacular looking kolam with either rice paste or dry rice flour. Another upside is that the ingredients become a way of sharing food with the creatures around us, like small
It's you, not junk food
birds and ants. These ingredients will make it to the bin the next morning to make compost for your garden. Use flowers like chrysanthemums, roses, lotus and leaves to give the finishing touches to your rangoli. Make Sweets At Home Spend a little extra time in the kitchen before the festivities start and make the laddoos, shankarpalis, karanjis and mithais at home. Share them with your neighbours and friends in steel and glass plates. It may be more convenient to just
buy them from the sweet shop next door but think about the wasteful packaging that comes with it. Besides, homemade sweets will have a more unique flavour and value than even the most expensive mithai. Use Oil Diyas Substitute candles and electric diyas with the good ol' oil diyas, which are made from eco-friendly materials and can be reused many times over. Candle diyas can be used only once and are petro-
leum based. They release toxins while burning which affects air quality . Some of the harmful chemicals released include benzene, formaldehyde and lead. Stick to the traditional earthen lamps, since cheaply available coloured diyas are painted with synthetic colours. If you would rather have electric lighting anyway , opt for LED lights and CFL bulbs. They use 30%-80% less energy and are available in a variety of colours at Crawford Market. (Agencies)
Diabetes drug can't help advanced heart failure patients A recent study has revealed that a type-2 diabetes therapy is ineffective in the treatment of high-risk heart failure patients. In an attempt to correct defects in the energy generation that contributes to poor pump function among heart failure patients, University of Pennsylvania researchers examined whether the diabetes drug liraglutide could improve the condition of patients with advanced heart failure. Despite improvements in blood sugar control, the therapy did not improve the clinical stability or pumping action of the heart in patients with advanced heart failure. Prin-
ciple investigator Kenneth B. Margulies presented data from the Functional Impact of GLP-1 for Heart Failure Treatment (FIGHT) study at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2015. Heart failure, a chronic condition in which the heart does not pump enough blood through the body, affects more than 5 million Americans. Abnormalities in the way the heart generates energy from fats and glucose, including resistance to the normal actions of insulin, have been shown to contribute to a patient's risk of heart failure. But no current heart
failure treatments target these metabolic derangements, said Margulies. He noted that because liraglutide counters insulin resistance, and earlier pilot studies suggest that severely weakened hearts have the greatest metabolic defects and potential benefit, it seemed most appropriate test the efficacy of liraglutide in a group of patients with advanced heart failure. Additional research, he says, will ultimately determine whether GLPagonists, like liraglutide, can be used safely among patients with various stages of heart failure. (ANI)
Quirky diyas for this Diwali Candy, soda and fast food, which are often painted as the prime culprits in the national discussion of obesity, are not making Americans fat, according to a new study. The Cornell University Food and Brand Lab study finds that intake of these foods is not related to Body Mass Index in the average adult. Researchers Just and Wansink reviewed a nationally representative sample of adults in the United States and found that consumption of soda, candy and fast food is not linked to Body Mass Index (BMI) for 95 percent of the population. The exception is those who are on the extreme ends of the BMI spectrum: those who are chronically underweight and those who are morbidly obese. Given that there was no significant difference in consumption of these indulgent foods between overweight and healthy weight individuals, the researchers concluded that the over-
whelming majority of weight problems are not caused by consumption of soda, candy and fast food alone. Dr. David Just explained that this means that diets and health campaigns aimed at reducing and preventing obesity may be off track if they hinge on demonizing specific foods. He added "If we want real change we need to look at the overall diet, and physical activity. Narrowly targeting junk foods is not just ineffective, it may be self-defeating as it distracts from the real underlying causes of obesity." These findings suggest that clinicians and practitioners seeking to help individuals obtain a healthy weight should examine how overall consumption patterns, such as snacking, and physical activity influence weight instead of just eliminating "junk foods" from patient's diets. The study is published in Obesity Science & Practice. (ANI)
