A day before he was to be evacuated for further treatment at Christian Medical College, Vellore, Nogen Biswas, 50, died of chronic asthma at the Tomo Riba State Hospital on Tuesday at 8.30pm. Chief Minister Kalikho Pul who was to personally evacuate him by a chopper today upto Guwahati, had assured all financial support for his treatment at CMC vellore, during his visit to the hospital on Tuesday. A casual carpenter with PWD department, Biswas had retired in 2008 and was admitted at the state hospital for chronic persistent bronchial asthma. Shocked by the death, the CM offered his condolences and prayed for the strength to the bereaved family to bear the loss and handed over Rs 1 lakh to them.

Jorhat excise department last night raided and destroyed several thousand liters of hooch (sulai) at Cinnamora and Kebang gaon under Cinnamora Police Station from eight manufacturing units under Jorhat district, informed excise sources here today. According to senior excise officials said, following complains for running brisk business in preparing and fermenting hooch (locally known as sulai) which is prepared out of molasses, i.e. goor, which is most illegal, unhygienic and unhealthy to use or drink, as they use highly

concentrated tablets, that has extra power that makes human body unfamiliar and brings dizziness, for which the labour class people run after the taste of hooch, which even charges is cheaper that other. The excise team destroyed nearly 2200 liters of hooch, that was kept in 20 liters drum, all kept in fermented stage, all the hooch that was kept hidden under the ground in their respective premises so that no common people either the excise or police could know where the fermented it is kept, the team also recovered utensils and extraction sets that is used to extract hooch, inform a senior official here.

According to police it was drama of six member gang including Sanjeev Saikia, a dreaded inter-city car lifter, who was hired by a gang of five to lift few vehicles from a vehicle dealer, M/s Chakrapani Ford at Dhapkota beside NH 37 that lies towards west Jorhat area. When the fully equipped gang failed its operation to lift the vehicles from Ford Dealer, finding tough to deal with the security, ultimately shot down

one of its security personnel identified to be one as Prasanta Gogoi (47) injuring him at the premises of the Ford's dealer who was on duty. Soon all the six fled as neigbhours rushed out after hearing gun shots, said police.
