BJP organises first meeting of NEDA with an eye to change political scenario in the NE A Staff Reporter Guwahati, July 12

The entire political scenario in the North East could change in the next few years as the BJP, in a very shrewd strategy has formed the North East Democratic Alliance, comprising the BJP in the North East and the other NDA partners from this region. The first meeting of this new entity will be held on Wednesday at Guwahati. The NEDA has seven political parties as member

The NEDA was formed at Guwahati on May 24, after the swearing in of the first BJP led government in Assam, and Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been named the convenor of the alliance.

“The North East has always been known as a Congress stronghold, and in the last few years the ground is slowly slipping from the party. In the next few years, if all the regional parties unite in the region, then there is a good opportunity to displace the congress,” said Mukunda Hazarika, a political analyst based in Guwahati.

According to political analysts it is a master stroke, and will help the BJP led alliance to a great extent in taking power in all the states in the region.

Hazarika further added that tribal and minority groups, which used to be the Congress’s vote bank in the past, has started eroding from the party.

parties from the North East, and includes the alliance partners in Assam, the AGP and BPF.

Citizens body demanded high level inquiry on Dhansiri Irrigation Project-one of the major Irrigation Project of the State Contd. from Page 1

though the budget was enhanced upto Rs. 575 crore which hampered the poor and needy farmers of the vast region. There is a long nexus among the concerned officials, employees and contractors and their utter negligence and interest” the newly formed Greater Udalguri Conscious Citizens’ Forum (GUCCF) has leveled a serious allegation and demanded the newly formed State Government to take proper action to unearth all such odds hindering in the completion of this major project. The people of Assam used their conscience and changed the 15 year old Congress government and allowed the BJP alliance to make a great change in the state in all fronts. The government after its formation started the reformation in a good speed and the people also started getting the flavor of change elsewhere. But, contrary to it, the poor people of Udalguri area, mostly the farmers do not see any form of change in the Dhansiri irrigation project, one of the major irrigation projects of Assam for last 40 years. The newly formed Greater Udalguri Conscious Citizens’ Forum (GUCCF) expressing deep concern has alleged that

the Dhansiri Irrigation Project, known as one of the major irrigation projects in the state has turned into a white elephant due to the faulty action plans, rampant largescale corruption in and outside it and due to the lack of awareness among the farmers who would have been the beneficiaries of the project. GUCCF President Prafulla Kumar Basumatary and Secretary Dalim Bayan have expressed concern over the indifferent attitude of the new Irrigation Minister Ranjit Dutta during his recent visit to Bhairabkunda to take stock of the development. Later, talking to ‘The Eastern- Today’ Secretary of GUCCF Dalim Bayan said that they bit their nails after the version of the Irrigation Minister who frankly told the delegation of the organization that he was not aware of the irregularities and scams of the irrigation project during the regime of Congress but would not allow any form of corruption in his regime. Dalim Bayan further said that people hoped that the new government would never spare anyone having corruption charges and inquiries would be there to unfold all such scams but the Irrigation Minister never hinted to conduct any form of inquiries in the ‘never ending’ process of the Dhansiri irrigation project and said that there are grounds to smell the rat in it.

The memorandum ruled out any disturbance in completing the irrigation and questioned how could some officers and employees related to the Dhanisiri irrigation project carry out their works without a transfer from this place for ages and wanted to know whether the concerned officials of the project filed any FIR in the police station regarding disturbance from anti social elements or the insurgent groups. The memorandum also alleged that the last tender of Dhansiri irrigation project was invited in 2014 for the last time but there were instances of some works carried out without inviting tenders just after the assembly elections by the concerned executive engineers by allotting works to some selected contractors. The organization therefore demanded for a high level inquiry at the earliest. It may be be noted that here the Dhansiri irrigation project was started in 197475 but till date it has not been able to serve the purpose of the farmers due to unabated corruption in it since its inception for which the farmers of the region termed it as Dhansiri Never Ending Irrigation Project . The public here alleged that the project has become a hen laying golden eggs to a section of officers, contractors and em-

ployees since its beginning which should have been to lay out golden paddy. A farmer of the region expressed his anguish by saying that every time when a new government is formed, it has become a regular practice for the new Irrigation Minister to visit the spot with tall assurances and this tradition had been being well maintained since 1974 till date. This time too, new Irrigation Minister Ranjit Dutta assured to complete the project by 2017 which seemed to be a farce to the villagers, he added. He also pinned a hope that the Chief Minister himself should take stock of the development and take stern action against the erring authority for the greater interest of the poor farmers. Meanwhile, the United Dhansiri-Jampani Bundh Committee, Bandarguri has decided to approach the Union Government ans well as the Chief Minister of Assam with a demand to conduct a CBI inquiry to bring a permanent solution of the project. Earlier to this, the committee requested the Standing Committee on Water Resources under the Lok Sabha Secretariat and the Ministry of Water Resources of the Government of India way back on November 10 in 2011 with a plea to complete the irrigation project

Shillong, July 12: The High Court of Meghalaya has directed the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) to pay over Rs 12 lakh ( Rs 12,67,000) to the mother of a city student who was electrocuted in 2012. The petition filed by Soma Joshi, the mother of the victim on December 9, 2015 is that on February 19, 2012 at around 3.30 p.m., her daughter Sheetal Joshi,(23), a student of first year B.A. at Umshyrpi College, went to the terrace of the residential building situated at Police Reserve Quarter, Shillong to collect clothes accompanied by one Anita Sangma; and both of them got electrocuted on coming in contact with the 11 KV electricity supply line passing dangerously close to the building.

A Manipuri woman has alleged that she was subjected to racial harassment at the international airport

While Anita Sangma had succumbed to the injuries, the petitioner's daughter who suffered 80% burn injuries was hospitalized and during the course of treatment, both her upper limbs had to be amputated. In the case of Anita Sangma, the MeECL had already paid a compensation of Rs. 7,65,000 to one Sukendra Sangma, the father-in-law of the victim whose husband had predeceased her and she was about 27 years of age with two children, but the MeECL did not consider the case of Sheetal Joshi. According to the petitioner, on March 28, 2012, her husband Chhabilal Joshi filed an application before the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of MeECL for payment of adequate compensation and for appointment no re-

sponse. Later, the petitioner's daughter expired on July 9, 2012 due to the injuries sustained in electrocution. The respondents, however had submitted that as per the reports of the senior Electrical Inspector, the victim Sheetal Joshi had thrown a ten rupees note from the top of the building to a girl on the ground to get the bettlenuts (kwai) but, for the note having got stuck on the projection of the building, the victim tried to push the same with the help of a 10 to 12 feet long G.I. pipe; and while moving back after pushing the note, she lost control and the pipe she was holding came in contact with the HT conductor resulting in electrocution. According to the respondents, the electrocution had only been due to the fault and negligence of the petitioner's

with Home Minister Rajnath Singh "Monika Khangembam - I am sorry to know this. Immigration is not with me. I will speak to my senior colleague Shri @rajnathsingh ji to sensitise Immigration officials at the airport," Swaraj tweeted. On her Facebook wall, Khangembam wrote that when she went to the immigration desk at IGI at around 9 pm on Saturday, an official looked at her passport and said, "Indian toh nahi lagti ho" (you don't look Indian). He then allegedly smirked at her and asked

daughter. However, the Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari in his order said that , even if the suggestions of the respondents about the daughter of the petitioner using a long GI pipe to push the currency note on the projection of the building and then, getting electrocuted because of the pipe coming into contact with the HG conductor is accepted at its face value, the respondent Corporation cannot escape its responsibility towards the incident for having laid a high voltage transmission line dangerously close to the residential building. While the Chief Justice awarded Rs 10 lakh towards long drawn treatment and hospitalization of the petitioner's daughter, the MeECL was asked to pay an additional Rs 2,67,000 towards the loss of depen-

her how many states comprised the country, in an apparent bid to "know her Indianness". She alleged that a lady official at the adjacent counter was giggling while the male officer paid no heed to her. When Khangembam told him she hailed from Manipur, the officer allegedly asked her to name the states Manipur shares its border with. "I said I was really getting late and he goes like, 'aircraft aapko chodke kahi nahi jaa rahi. Aaram se jawab do'" (the aircraft isn't leaving without you. You can answer at ease.).(Agencies)

dency and other damages for untimely demise of her daughter due to electrocution. Hence the petitioner is entitled to receive a total of Rs 12,67,000 from MeECL. According to the court, though the petitioner was not awarded the interest at present but a provision for interest deserves to be made, if the respondents fail to make payment of the awarded amount within stipulated time. The court said that the respondents should make payment of compensation within sixty days from Monday " failing which the respondents shall also be liable to make payment of the amount so awarded with interest @ 6% per annum from the date of filing of writ petition (December 9, 2015) and until payment.(Agencies)

'Scared' U'khnd Govt. playing politics over Shaktiman: BJP Dehradun (Uttara khand), July 12: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday accused the Congress-led Uttarakhand Government of playing politics over 'Shakitman' and said it is scared of a CBI probe in the death of the slain police horse. Taking a jibe at Chief Minister Harish Rawat, BJP MP Ganesh Joshi, who had allegedly attacked Shaktiman, told that the statue of the horse was removed from the Police Lines with the instruction of some astrologer. "When an astrologer told you that you lost ten MLAs when you tried to do politics over a horse...this time if you do

so, the Congress Party will sink...so, you removed the statue. The Chief Minister is scared of the CBI...but I am not. There must be a CBI probe in this matter as to how he got injured, why his leg was amputated," he said. Joshi said Rawat had earlier announced a 'Shaktiman Chowk', but now with the statue being removed, he will be best person to answer on it. "The Chief Minister had passed this in the Cabinet...so you could have asked this question to him. He had announced that this chowk would be named as 'Shaktiman chowk' and a statue would be installed.

NIA arrests two from Hyderabad in terrorist conspiracy case Hyderabad, July 12: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of two persons in connection with the ongoing investigation of a terroristconspiracy case in Hyderabad. The NIA said that Mohammad Ataullah Rehman was arrested for his key role in the conspiracy. He was involved in radicalising group members and also administered Bayah, the oath of allegiance, to the KhalifaAbu Bakr Al Baghdadi. Rehman, a resident of Hyderabad, participated in several conspiracy meetings as was revealed by the other co-accused arrested in this case. The NIA further said that Naimathullah Hussaini, a resident of Hyderabad, was the second accused arrested today for being a key member of the conspiracy group and for contributing money to the group. 42-year-old Hussaini, who was appointed as the Amir of the group, participated in key conspiracy meetings. Congress has become Gandhi family's ' factory': BJP New Delhi, July 12: Taking a jibe at the Congress over its 'loyalty pledge' ahead of the Punjab Assembly polls, theBharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday alleged that the grand old party has become a factory run by the Gandhi family. BJP's Punjab in-charge Prabhat Jha sarcastically said, "If you need a job in a factory then your documents have to be checked. Nowadays, the Congress workers are not loyal to the party or nation, but are loyal only to Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi." The BJP leader further said

the priorities of the Congress have changed now as its leaders are now hell-bent upon showing their loyalty to the Gandhis. Eyeing upon victory in the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections, the Congress reportedly wants its winning MLAs this time to abide by its whips in the assembly as in the 2012 polls many hopefuls had contested against its official candidates after being denied tickets. The " loyalty affidavits" is said to be an application devised with help from poll strategist Prashant Kishor. (ANI)

Chief Minister Harish Rawat The statue vanished within a fortnight with his order. The Chief Minister would have been able to give you a better answer," he added. He further said more than

80 percent of the people on social media opposed the installation of the statue of the police horse. "Many police died while saving many Amaranth Yatra pilgrims. They

(people on social media) wanted a war memorial in memory of the slain police officers. He didn't do it. In order to do politics, you installed a statue," he added. Following backlash on the social media over 'Shaktiman' being given more importance than the cops who lost their lives, the Uttarakhand Government has removed the statue of the police horse installed at the Police Lines. Chief Minister Harish Rawat was supposed to inaugurate the 'Shaktiman Park' named after the police horse, who was critically maimed in a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rally carried out by MP

Ganesh Joshi earlier on March 14. However, Rawat skipped the inaugural ceremony yesterday and left the venue soon after his visit. Shaktiman was a welltrained 13-year-old horse of the Uttarakhand Mounted Police. When the horse was deployed by the police during a BJP rally, Joshi had allegedly attacked the horse's leg with a baton, critically injuring the animal. The outrage over this incident of gross animal abuse grew so large that Joshi was even briefly arrested. The white-coloured Kathiawari horse succumbed to its injuries on April 20. (ANI)

Captain backs "loyalty affidavits", says rebellions will be expelled Sangrur (Punjab), July 12: Reiterating the decision that party leaders would not turn "rebels" if denied the chance to contest the 2017 Punjab Assembly polls, Congress leader Captain Amarinder Singh on Tuesday warned that those who turn rebellious would be expelled for the next five years. Captain said that he was in tune with the Congress High Command's decision to ask all the leaders to sign "loyalty affidavits". "If anybody tries to revolt then we will initiate strong action. The ticket will be provided to one person while the others will have to wait for their turn. We have around 150 memberships in Punjab and those who assist our candidates will be given the opportunity to become a member," Captain told the media here. "There were around 20 independent candidates last time and we don't want any independent (candidate) this time. I was in Balachaur yesterday. There are nine candidates for that particular seat and if we give ticket to one then eight others might revolt. If such a situation arises then we will expel from the party for the next five years," he added.

As per reports, the Congress this time wants its winning MLAs to abide by its whips in the assembly as in the 2012 polls many hopefuls had contested against its official candidates after being denied tickets. The " loyalty affidavits" is said to be an application devised with help from poll strategist Prashant Kishor. Meanwhile, the former Punjab chief minister also used the occasion to target the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is gradually expanding its base in the state. Responding to a poser about Kejriwal's upcoming visit to Amritsar's Golden Temple, Captain said that it was just an attempt on part of the Delhi Chief Minister to show his face to the people prior to the polls. "Neither Kejriwal nor Phoolka, but some other person who committed this blunder needs to apologize. Journalist and the in-charge of AAP's manifesto committee Kanwar Sandhu is responsible for the poster that had the party's symbol broom superimposed on the photograph of Golden Temple. They are trying to play with religious sentiments and this is wrong," he added. The Punjab Police had

last week registered an FIR in Amritsar into a complaint against AAP's senior member Ashish Khetan on alleged comparison of his party's newly-released youth manifesto with the Guru Granth Sahib. The FIR was registered on a complaint by a Ferozepur-based man Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad, 24 hours after Khetan along with AAP MP Bhagwant Mann and party leader Kanwar Sandhu had publically apologised and admitted the mistake. The former Punjab chief minister also expressed his disappointment over reports that around two lakh students have passed their board examinations this year courtesy grace marks. Lashing out at the SADBJP alliance government, Captain said the incumbent Punjab Government has brought down the standard of education. "They might pass here, but how will they enter into higher educational institutions? The Badal Government is trying to make their own scores with assertions that Punjab has risen to the fourth place in education while the truth is that even Himachal Pradesh is ahead of us. The future

of education in Punjab is dark in the hands of this government," he added. Advocating the schemes implemented in the past, the Congress leader said that they waived off all cooperative loans during their tenure in power in the state, adding that they would take this initiative further if the people vote them to power in 2017. "The heavy interests levied by lending institutions must be cancelled as this is unfair... We will also implement additional schemes as inflation is high and the income of the poor section is decreasing day by day," said Capitan, adding .it's the government's responsibility to help the poor. Eyeing upon victory in the 2017 polls, Captain has been campaigning aggressively to reach out to the people of Punjab. He has also come up with several new initiatives, including Punjab Da Captain, Coffee with Captain, Halke Vich Captain, so that he can address the grievances of the people at the grassroots level. The former Punjab chief minister is also active on the social media where he leaves no stone unturned in targetting his opponents SAD and AAP. (ANI)

Aggressive China asked smaller countries to take anti-India stand at NSG meet: Sources The 48-member block saw a broad consensus between its members over non-inclusion of the countries who are not signatories to the Nuclear NonProfileration Treaty (NPT). As predicted, China opposed New Delhi's entry into the NSG, saying the global non-proliferation order would collapse if the latter was allowed exception. "If exceptions are allowed here or there on the question of NPT, the international non-proliferation order then will be collapsed altogether," Wang Qun, Director General of the Department of Arms

Control of China's Foreign Ministry, said in a statement from Seoul then. "In the absence of NPT as a political and legal basis, it will be inconceivable for the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or the Iran nuclear deal) to be reached," he added. Spanish couple detained for sporting Buddha tattoo, face deportation Naypyidaw, July 12: A Spanish couple visiting Myanmar is facing deportation after a Buddha tattoo was discovered on the man's leg. The tourist couple was visiting Bagan, an ancient town in central Myanmar, when Shin Sandavaya from the Tharmakay monastery, after spotting a Buddha image on the leg of the visitor outside Kantotpalin Pagoda, reported the case to the Bagan police station. Religious authorities from the Nyaung-U office and immigration officers interviewed the 46year-old tourist and confirmed that he has a Buddha tattoo on his calf that was inked in Spain, reports.

According to Mandalay police, the two tourists were sent to Yangon the same day (July 10), and the embassy was contacted. The man is speculated to have been deported to Bangkok. In 2014, a Canadian tourist visiting Myanmar with his girlfriend was detained by officials for sporting Buddhist tattoos on his leg. Importance of University-Industry Interface Sign Seven Agreements Kenya Valued Partner of India Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Kenya as a valued partner of India while calling for expansion of Indian investments in this east African country. "Kenya is a valued friend and trusted (Photo: partner of India," Modi biopharmassets) said in a joint press statement with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta following delegation-level talks between the two sides. The bonds between the two countries are long-standing and rich. The Prime Minister said the historical peopleto-people ties between the two countries have provided a strong basis for a wide-ranging partnership which extended "from agriculture and health to developmental assistance, from trade and commerce to investment, from closer contact between our people to capacity building, from regular political consultations to defence and security cooperation". Modi said the economies of both countries would benefit by "further expansion of investment ties, a more diversified trade basket and nurturing greater intensity of commercial links". On his part, Kenyatta said that both sides broached a whole number of critical issues in Monday's talks. He said that India has promised to help in the area of health and would develop a cancer hospital in Kenya. India would also help set up a pharmaceutical company in Kenya to manufacture life-saving drugs. "We are keen in exploiting ties in sports also - India in terms of cricket, Kenya in terms of athletics," Kenyatta said. India and Kenya signed seven agreements following delegation-level talks headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta. The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the area of defence cooperation. Another MoU calls for cooperation in the field of standardisation, expertise sharing and mutual trade between Bureau of Indian Standards and Bureau of Kenya Standards. A third MoU was signed for cooperation in the field of national housing policy development and management. According to another agreement, India will extend a line of credit of $15 million (first tranche of $30 million) to IDB Capital, Kenya, for development of various small and medium enterprises [SMEs] in the east African country. An agreement was also signed for extension of a line of credit of $29.95 million by India to the Kenyan government for upgrade of Rift Valley Textiles Factory (RIVATEX East Africa Limited), Kenya. Both sides signed a revised Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement. A bilateral agreement on exemption of visa for holders of diplomatic passports. This is the first prime ministerial visit from India to Kenya in 35 years after the visit of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1981. Apart from Kenya and Tanzania, Modi's five-day trip to Africa also took him to Mozambique and South Africa.

Intake on the rise Indians more addicted to alcohol Alcohol is taking a tragic toll in recent times, with the number of drink-related deaths up by a third since the mid-1980s. Excessive drinking is now implicated in 33,000 deaths a year, according to a report. A global study has found out that alcohol consumption in India has risen by 55% over a period of 20 years. More worryingly, the young are getting initiated to alcohol much earlier, while more women are indulging in hazardous and binge drinking. The percentage of under-15 boys who haven't had alcohol went down from 44% to 30%, while for girls it decreased from 50% to 31% in the 2000s. The trend of heavy drinking witnessed among the young of all countries has experts worried. The rapid rise in alcohol consumption is also not without any economic ramifications. A developing nation, for instance, loses around 1% of its annual output due to lost productivity of drunken workers. Alcohol consumption is the third largest risk factor for disease and disability in the world. In 2010 it was responsible for 4.9 million deaths and 5.5% of the total DALYs lost worldwide, according to Lancet's Global Disease Burden study. Since it is a leading risk factor for death among the economically and socially productive age group of 15-49 year old men, it has grave implications in terms of a society's over all development. According to WHO, about 30% of Indians consume alcohol, out of which 4-13% are daily consumers and up to 50% of these, fall under the category of hazardous drinking. Another worrying trend from India is that the average age of initiation of alcohol use has reduced from 28 years during the 1980s to 17 years in 2007. In India alcohol abuse also amounts to huge annual losses due to alcohol-related problems in work places. Nearly 25% of the road accidents are under the influence of alcohol and it is also a significant risk factor for increased domestic violence. In an alarming revelation, the Global Status report on alcohol and health 2014, released by the World Health Organization (WHO) states that the amount of alcohol consumption has raised in India between the periods of 2008 to 2012. The data was compiled taking into account individuals over the age of 15 and above, who consumed alcohol. The per capita consumption of alcohol in the country increased from 1.6 liters from the period of 2003-2005, to 2.2 liters from the period of 2010-2012.The global figure stood at 16%. Alcohol consumption also contributes to about 10 percent of the disease burden due to tuberculosis, epilepsy, hemorrhagic stroke and hypertensive heart disease in the world, the report added.

The Indian universities create knowledge through its band of knowledgeable, dedicated and inquisitive faculties. The faculties are basically the knowledge bears and hence, use their scientific faculties that generate intellectual resources in the form of concepts, theories, techniques and methods. The utilization of these intellectual resources by the industries is helpful in achieving competent results, long-term growth and profitability. Thus, in order to achieve industrial insights and develop innovativeness, the faculties of the universities need to expose themselves to the business units by working and interacting with them so that appropriate intellectual resources generated. The intellectual resources so created need to be shared by the industry so that the industry's response can help in validating the concepts, theories, techniques and methods. Thus, the process of creation, multiplication, dissemination and sharing of the intellectual resources is the hallmark of the relationship building between universities and industry. Links between universities and industry are considered important for stimulating innovation

Image for representational purpose (Photo:lpu) within the wider economy. Much emphasis has been on the commercialization of universities' intellectual property, as for instance licensing of university patents or establishing spinoff companies. While these mechanisms are relevant, there are a range of other links between universities and industry that play an important role. They include collaborative university-industry research centers, contract research, academic consulting and networks bringing together university researchers and industry scientists or managers. These relationships have in common that they are 'interaction-intensive'. This means they involve ongoing social interaction and collaboration between individuals and teams drawn from both contexts. Therefore, they can be seen as facilitating the 'co-production' of knowledge, as opposed to mere knowledge 'transfer'.

While patenting and licensing activities have been extensively studied, we know less about the presence and relevance of such 'co-production' links in the UK context. The fact that many of these activities are to a large extent funded by government provides another good reason for closer scrutiny. The project undertakes a detailed exploration of interaction-intensive university-industry relationships and their role in industrial innovation. This includes analyses of - the role of contract research and consulting by academics and different types of collaborative university-industry research. Acknowledging the role of national institutions, the UK experiences will be compared with practices and results achieved in other countries. The research is expected to answer important questions on the working relationships between universities and industry. Importantly, given

that in the context of 'open innovation' companies more and more rely on external sources of knowledge, the question is what role universities can realistically play in this scenario. The research will help clarify the contributions different types of university links can make to different types of companies, different stages of the innovation process and different positions in the value chain. It will also identify the opportunities and challenges inherent in bringing together academics and industry to work together in physical locations and dispersed networks. The project will thereby contribute to our knowledge about university-industry relationships and inform policy practice. Xi'an, Xi's hometown. More recently, following President Pranab Mukherjee's visit to China in May 2016, two Indian chief ministers visited China: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu (from June 21-26) and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan (June 19-25). Both went to China with the key aim of reaching out to Chinese investors and seeking investment in a number of areas, including infrastructure. Chouhan, whose visit was part of an exchange program between the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the International Liaison Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, reached out to big investors and invited them to the Global Investors Summit to be held in Madhya Pradesh in October 2016. The Madhya Pradesh chief minister, on his return from China, stated that while China may have opposed India's bid for NSG, "Dialogue should continue to strengthen economic ties between the two countries." Apart from securing commitments from a number of investors, including Ansteel Engineering Technology Corpora-

tion Limited, Naidu, chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, also sought to enhance people-topeople linkages. In this context, a sister state agreement was signed between Guizhou province and the state of Andhra Pradesh. Naidu also spoke about his plans for Amaravati, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, and its rich Buddhist heritage. Naidu, who as chief minister of Andhra Pradesh in the late 1990s had played a key role in making Hyderabad (now the capital of Telangana) into an IT hub and managed to rope in big names like Microsoft, previously visited China in April 2015. He had been sent by the Ministry of External Affairs. During his visit in 2015, Naidu aggressively wooed investors and MOUs were signed between the Andhra government and companies for investment in the solar energy sector, while a number of businessto-business agreements were signed as well. During this visit, Naidu was able to attract Chinese smart phone manufacturer Xiaomi, which subsequentlyopened a plant in Andhra Pradesh, where Taiwanese company Foxconn (the worlds largest contract manufacturer of smart phones) is assembling Xiaomi phones.

Likewise, in January 2016, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar visited China and met with a number of investors. During his trip, the Dalian Wanda Group evinced interest in developing an industrial park in Kharkhoda, Sonipat (near New Delhi). Wanda Chairman Wang Jianlin met the chief minister during his visit, and also attended the Happening Haryana Investors Summit held at Gurgaon in March 2016. In September 2015, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao embarked upon a ten day visit to China. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited the country in May 2015, accompanying Modi on his trip. This trend of chief ministers visiting China has witnessed an increase in recent years, but began earlier. Other CMs who have visited China include Nitish Kumar (Bihar), K Siddaramiah (Karnataka), and Modi himself as Gujarat's CM. Sir, A report published in the news papers and telecast through the electronic media suggests that there is a crisis of essential commodities in Tripura along with the crisis of fuel (Petrol, Diesel and LPG) mainly because of the dilapidated condition of the roads through which the commodities are transported to Tripura (NH8). We believe, it is for the central government to ensure transporting the essential commodities to the places within India maintaining at least good road condition. The erstwhile central government of the UPA sunk deep into corruption failed miserably in bettering the condition of the roads. Dethroning the corrupt congress when NDA led by BJP won the last general election, people had great expectation. The surface Transport ministry with Nitin Gadkari at the helm, failed in his

inces, the India-China Forum of State Provincial Leaders was inaugurated by the Indian PM and his Chinese counterpart, Li Keqiang, during the visit. The United States and China have had a similar governor-level dialogue since 2011; this dialogue has helped in further expanding both economic and people-to-people ties. Links between provinces and states have played a key role in fostering ties between India and China for over three decades. One particular focus for stateto-province engagement is building tourism linkages. States like Telangana and Kerala have been promoting their heritage and holding roadshows to promote tourism in China. China observed an India tourism year in 2015, while India is observing a China tourism year in 2016. While serious strategic differences cannot be ignored, state and provincial governments can make substantial contributions in strengthening economic relations and people-topeople contact. Their increasing participation in India-China relations is a welcome development. Coutesy:the diplomat

For example, P&G.

Under P&G, there are dozens of brands, including Pampers, Duracell, Gillette, and Tide to name a few. However, the name P&G gets very little prominence, and adds no real credibility to any of its products. You will never see P&G promoting its company in an advertisement. It rather focuses on the individual products. Patanjali's Key To Success Increasing Number Of Health Conscious People: In recent times, people have become more health conscious which is evident from the fact that many companies are investing money in organic and Ayurvedic products. According to Nielsen, the health and wellness segment is worth a sizable Rs. 33,000 crore. It grew 6% over 2014. Patanjali, with its Ayurvedic product line, is able to somehow capitalise on this changing consumer behaviour and hence capture more market share. Less Price: Patanjali products are available at an attractive discount as compared to their competition. The company sources products directly from farmers and cuts on middlemen to boost profits. Hence, they are able to reduce their raw material procurement cost and are able to produce goods at a much cheaper

price. Currently, Patanjali is making 20% operating profit which is higher than the industry average. Strong Distribution Channels: Patanjali products are sold through three types of medical centres. These include Patanjali Chikitsalayas which are basically clinics. Then there are Patanjali Arogya Kendras which are health and wellness centres. They also have non-medicine outlets called Swadeshi Kendras. The group has 15,000 exclusive outlets across India. They also distribute through general retail stores. As mentioned above, they have also tied up with wellknown retail chains also. They plan to grow to 1,00,000 outlets in the next few years. Strong Brand Association With Health Because Of Baba Ramdev: Patanjali is able to create a brand perception of health and wellness among the Indian masses, primarily because of Baba Ramdev's association with the brand who is considered to be a veteran of yoga. Hence, more people are getting attracted to Patanjali's products and are re-buying products more frequently. Simple Packaging Gives It A Natural Look: If you notice, Patanjali sells its products with a very simple packaging. Now, many would feel that it is

only banks need deeper pockets if they're going against Goliaths. Nevertheless, I see three main reasons that will help Neobanks conquer the future. 1. Innovation Innovation is at the heart of this fintech disruption. The credit score calculation is one such example that shows how innovation is changing the game. Gone are those days when there were no

Image for representational purpose (Photo: pcmag) products they offer also differ from each other but all of them want to bring your finances close to you. The financial sector, dominated by very big players, is witnessing never-seen disruptions in the name of 'fintech' (expanded as 'financial technology'). Thousands of fintech startups are coming in and disrupting the sector. Israel is just an example. There are two important things I attribute as the major factors in this disruption. Firstly, the decline in the average customer visits

fifths of the global population will have a mobile subscription, with close to one billion new subscribers being added over the period. At the same time, we can't neglect the high failure rate among the fintech startups. ING's head of fintech, Benoit Legrand, says, "Those guys [neobanks] are competing not only with the big banks but also with the Amazons, the Googles, who have an immense power. We look at Alipay for instance. It's a tricky game." Of course, app-

proper methods to calculate the credit score for the customers with no credit history. Predictive and social media analytics are being used these days. Peer-to-peer lending, home and education loans are also following suit. 2. Near-Zero CAPEX This is one of my most favorite terms that I use to describe cloud-only enterprises. For apponly banks, there is no need to set up branches, scale the infrastructure and buy assets. All they have to do is to develop a brilliant app and scale-

up the resources in cloud as per the demand. This almost-zero capital expenditure (capex) helps neobanks cut huge costs and pass on these benefits to customers in terms of very less or no fees for transactions. 3. Customer Experience The world around us has changed a lot. We are well aware what Amazon and Uber did to our lives. Whereas we are still banking the same way our parents did. Neobanks are doing a remarkable job in completely changing the banking experience of a customer. Though the products neobanks offer are same as traditional banks, they impress customers with features like real-time analytics and cash flow forecasts. These banks are basically technology companies with a banking license and they're digital first. The speed at which one can open a savings account, using their apps, is amazing. Though neobanks have their own challenges like attracting customers, long-term cash flows, security concerns and so, I can see a lot of potential for them, especially in developing countries. In a country like India, where half a billion population is financially excluded, I see more opportunities than problems. Hence, I do agree with Bill Gates when he says that, "Banking is essential, banks are not." Courtesy: Youth kiawaaz

not a good strategy but the truth is it is working for Patanjali. With a product like Patanjali, where the message is to promote 'Ayurveda' and 'Health', simple packaging can be a very effective way of promotion and that is why the company is able to do miracles with its simple yet effective packaging. With a natural look (especially with leaves and herbs), consumers get a feeling of health and wellness and they are attracted to buy the product. Promotion Through Media: Baba Ramdev is considered to be a veteran guru of yoga across the globe. He has been very co-operative with press and media and has maintained good relationships with them. Also, he is known to have good connections with many politicians. So he used both the facts to publicise his company free of cost. Take for instance when Baba Ramdev approached Lalu Prasad Yadav and gave his face a massage with a Patanjali face cream and it was covered by media. Or the Maggi scandal when Baba Ramdev came forward and gave a statement that he will launch safer and good quality noodles. Word-Of-Mouth Promotion: Advertising and promotions typically account for 12-20% of revenue

Patanjali Ayurveda was founded by Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna in the year 2006. (Photo: delybazar) expenditure by consumer goods companies. When a new company gets into the business, this spending is significantly higher. During the introduction stage, Patanjali followed a unique word-of-mouth publicity model and the entire revenue was without any advertising. It was because of the brand loyalty of its customers that the word-of-mouth promotion proved so successful for the company. What Patanjali Can Do Strengthen The Distribution Channel: The key to success in the FMCG industry is the distribution channel. Patanjali should ensure its products are available everywhere and at any time. Like Future Group, it should tie up with other key retail chains/stores and make its presence felt. If the company is able to widen its distribution channel, there is no way it can't be on the top of the FMCG list. Avoid Falling Into The Icarus Paradox: For

those who don't know Icarus Paradox, "It refers to the phenomenon of businesses failing abruptly after a period of apparent success, where this failure is brought about by the very elements that led to their initial success". Patanjali should ensure that it innovates its products with time. It shouldn't just stick to the traditional way of marketing and promotional strategies. It should be aware of the fact that time changes consumer behaviour and the company should also evolve with its customers to fulfil their needs and demands. Focus On Quality: Quality is of prime importance when it comes to FMCG products. In an interview, Baba Ramdev promised that they maintain the utmost level of quality in their manufacturing plants. So, in order to succeed, Patanjali should ensure to maintain (if not improve) the same level of quality in future as well. Patanjali products are

known for their quality and there shouldn't be a tradeoff between sales and quality whatsoever the reason may be. Conclusion Patanjali has given a headache to many marketers with its unconventional ways of marketing. It has disrupted the whole FMCG sector and bought a revolution in the industry in a very short span of time. A point to note is that many people are buying Patanjali products due to the hedonic value attached to the products. Hence, Patanjali (unlike its competitors) is attracting brand loyal customers and not price sensitive customers. Will Patanjali continue to grow at the same pace and prove to be a dark horse in the race? Or will it prove to be a water bubble, with this being a temporary phase for Patanjali and strong players eventually coming up with strategies to recapture the lost market share? Only time will tell. India assets of Lafarge to be sold to Nirma for $ 1.4 billion Pune, Jul 12: Lafarge Holcim Ltd, the world's largest cement maker, said it will sell its stake in Lafarge India to Nirma Ltd for an enterprise value of about USD 1.4 billion. Lafarge India operates three cement plants and two grinding stations with capacity of about 11 million tonnes a year. "Lafarge Holcim announces it has entered into a letter agreement with Nirma Ltd... For the divestment of its interest in Lafarge India for an enterprise value of approximately USD 1.4 billion," the company said in a statement. Lafarge India also markets aggregates and is one of the country's leading ready-mix concrete manufacturers. "The proceeds from the divestment will be used to reduce debt further," the statement said. Lafarge Holcim will continue to operate in India through its subsidiaries ACC and Ambuja Cements, which have a combined cement capacity of more than 60 million tonnes and a distribution network that extends across the country. "This agreement is an important step in our 3.5 billion Swiss franc (USD 3.56 billion) divestment programme. "With this deal, two thirds of the programme have been secured and the remainder is well on track. We are confident that we will meet our target by the end of this year. With the proposed buyer we have found the right partner who will be able to develop the business further in the interest of all our stakeholders," CEO Eric Olsen said. The deal is subject to the approval of the Competition Commission of India. Lafarge Holcim has a divestment target of 3.5 billion Swiss franc in 2016 and has already completed the sale of its business in South Korea and signed an agreement to divest its minority shareholding in Saudi Arabia. The Group has also expanded its joint-venture with SNI, its historical partner in Morocco, by merging Lafarge Ciments Maroc and Holcim Maroc to create Lafarge Holcim Maroc. (Agencies)

FOR HARD TIMES Government will import 5 lakh tonnes of maize to check price rise and hoarding in the wake of fall in domestic production of the crop. To check prices and prevent hoarding, Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has approved importing 5,00,000 MT of maize under Tariff Rate Quota by a state trading enterprise.

Under Tariff Rate Quota Scheme, government allows imports of four products, including maize (corn), at concessional rates of customs duty. At present, maize attracts 50 per cent import duty.

However, under the Tariff Rate Quota Scheme, the import duty is zero. Eligible entities for allocation of quota under the scheme in case of corn include STC, MMTC and PEC.

In June, state-owned trading firm PEC had invited bids for import of 50,000 tonnes of maize (non-genetically modified) to boost domestic supplies in view of fall in production.

Maize production in the country is estimated to have declined to 21.02 million tonnes in 2015-16 from 23.67 million tonnes in the previous year.

In June, stateowned trading firm PEC had invited bids for import of 50,000 tonnes of maize (non-genetically modified) to boost domestic supplies in view of fall in production. As per Agriculture Ministry's third advance estimate, maize production in the country

is estimated to have declined to 21.02 million tonnes in 2015-16 from 23.67 million tonnes in the previous year. India has been traditionally a major corn exporter to southeast Asia but drought and rising domestic demand has cut export supplies. Poultry sector and starch manufacturers are the major consumer of maize. The government is also importing pulses to boost domestic availability and check price rise. As of now 46,000 tonnes of pulses have been contracted for supply. (Agencies)

L'Oreal wins over Lakme on e-store Nykaa Mumbai, Jul 12: In what may not come across as a rosy picture for Hindustan Unilever's (HUL's) Lakme, global cosmetics giant L'Oreal with its combined strength of two brands Maybelline New York and L'Oreal Paris - has acquired a larger share of the cosmetics market at leading online beauty store Nykaa. A significant number of online cosmetics sales take place on Nykaa. Data suggest that Maybelline New York and L'Oreal Paris brands have together garnered, on an average, a monthly market share of about 43% during January to June this year, while Lakme's share stands at an average 25%. On a stand-alone basis, Lakme is still a leading cosmetics brand as Maybelline New York has an average monthly share of 28% (January-June) and L'Oreal Paris 15%. But L'Oreal's investments in the digital space have led to the strengthening of its share in this market. L'Oreal India's MD JeanChristophe Letellier said, "India is transforming gradually but the digital

Image for representational purpose. (Photo: timesofindia.indiatimes) revolution is presenting a growth prospective for us. It has changed the way we look at the future and engage with consumers." At a global group level, 25.5% of net media investments of L'Oreal are into digital. Last year, L'Oreal's global sales through e-commerce were at 1.3 billion euros. "E-commerce has become a new continent by itself. In India, where we have a significant share of our investment into digital to interconnect with consumers, we have a very large footprint in so-

cial media. We are leading in the category in terms of our e-commerce market share," said Letellier. An HUL spokesperson said: "As a matter of policy we do not comment on market shares. However, we wish to clarify that Lakme is the leading cosmetics brand in both modern trade and e-commerce channels in India. Lakme is growing ahead of the market in both these channels. Lakme is the largest makeup brand on popular e-commerce portals such as Flipkart, Myntra and Jabong. Even on Nykaa,

Lakme has been consistently growing its consumer franchise and has emerged as the largest cosmetics brand." The organized cosmetics market in India has for long been dominated by Lakme, India's first homegrown cosmetics brand that was once owned by the Tata Group, and later acquired by HUL. Even as new multinational brands have entered the Indian market, Lakme has held its overall leadership position backed by HUL's strong marketing muscle. However, on the digital platform in cosmetics, HUL appears to be facing stiff competition from L'Oreal which has bolstered its makeup portfolio by launching a third global brand Nyx exclusively on Nykaa. According to monthly market share data, L'Oreal India's combined share at Nykaa (Maybelline New York and L'Oreal Paris) ranged between 34% and 47% between January and June this year, while Lakme's share has fluctuated between 22% and 35% (see chart). Nyx could add to L'Oreal's consolidated

share going forward, although Lakme too is said to be growing in double digits. On the other hand, cosmetic is perhaps the only category where HUL is playing on the strength of a single brand. Marketing experts said this was a deliberate strategy adopted by the multinational. But HUL's strategy to straddle the pyramid applies to Lakme as well, with sub-brands Lakme Absolute, 9 to 5 and Classics. In its quarterly results statement, HUL said it has been investing in innovation in the premium makeup market with Lakme Absolute and 9 to 5, and the category grew in double digits in the March quarter of 2016. Apart from cosmetics, L'Oreal competes with HUL on haircare as well. Its recent launch of global hair care brand 'Garnier Ultra Blends' in India as part of a worldwide rollout is expected to take on the Sunsilk and Dove maker in naturals, a segment which is gaining momentum globally. L'Oreal India clocked sales of Rs 2,353 crore as of December 2015. (Agencies)

2 million mobile developers to be trained by Google in India Washington, Jul 12: In a fillip to government`s Skill India initiative, technology giant Google on Monday launched its "Android Skilling and Certification" programme to help make the country a global hub of high-quality mobile developers. The programme aims to train two million mobile developers by unveiling a slew of initiatives to skill up, educate and certify millions of talented students and developers in Android development. "With nearly four million developers, India is expected to have

largest developer population globally by 2018. But today, only 25 percent of them are building for mobile," Caesar Sengupta, Vice President (Product Management) at Google, told reporters here. India is uniquely placed to innovate and shape the internet experience of billions of users "who are and will come online on the mobile platform," he added. Google also launched an instructor-led training programme on Android fundamentals to provide an in-person training to students in universities. In

addition to all public and private universities and training institutes of the National Skill Development Corporation of India, the course will be available free of charge on NTPEL (an initiative of IITs and IISc) as part of its online "Mobile Computing" course, starting from July 18. Google has tied up with training partners like Edureka, Koenig, Manipal Global, Simplilearn, Udacity and UpGrad who will operate as authorised Android training partners in India to help Google train the trainers and up-

date Android courseware to prepare students for Android certification. "By building a world-class curriculum and making it easily accessible to the students, we want to contribute to the Skill India initiative and make India the global leader in mobile app development," Sengupta added. Google also announced the launch of its globally recognised joboriented "Associate Android Developer Certification" exam that will help candidates get an entrylevel Android developer job. After training, the aspiring

candidates can log on to the Google Developer training website and take the certification exam priced at Rs 6,500. "We introduced the Android Nano degree programme in India last year with Udacity and today, we have over 11,500 students in India enrolling every month in our courses," said Peter Lubbers, Head of Google Developer Training. Google will also open-source all Android Developer Fundamentals practicals and courseware and make these available to everyone for free. (Agencies)

Green nod given to Airtel-Aircel 4G deal

Image for representational purpose. (Photo: timesofindia) Mumbai, Jul 12: Telecom Ministry is learnt to have cleared the Rs.3,500-crore 4G spectrum trading deal between service providers Bharti Airtel and Aircel. "The spectrum trading deal between Bharti Airtel and Aircel was cleared by the telecom minister on July 4," said an official source. As on July 4, Law and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad was in-charge of the Telecom Ministry as well. Bharti Airtel declined comment. Airtel has entered into an agreement with Aircel to acquire rights to use 4G spectrum of Aircel in eight telecom circles for Rs 3,500 crore. These circles are Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Assam, the North-East, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. "Airtel was asked to surrender 1.2 Mhz spectrum in Odisha circle for approval as it breached the

spectrum cap limit (after taking into account Aircel's spectrum). The company has surrendered 1.2 Mhz spectrum in 1800 Mhz before the deal was cleared," the source said. In a circle, no player can hold more than 25 per cent of the total spectrum allocated in that particular service area. Activist lawyer Prashant Bhushan, in a letter on July 8, had demanded that CBI and ED immediately freeze spectrum held by Aircel, alleging that its Malaysian parent Maxis will "abscond" if the proposed deals with Airtel and RCom are allowed to go through. The CBI has filed a detailed chargesheet against Aircel/Maxis and its Malaysian owner T Ananda Krishnan. Even ED has filed cases against them and attached properties of former telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran, but not that of Maxis, the letter said. (Agencies)

HORTICULTURE How to Grow Asparagus You can plant asparagus in the ground, but it really thrives when planted in a raised bed. This design fits a 2x8 bed, such as our Cedar Raised Beds. This design holds about 14-16 asparagus plants - or "crowns" - planted in a staggered fashion about a foot apart. If you love asparagus and want to grow some yourself, waste no time in getting started. Even with the best of care, an asparagus bed won't hit its stride for several years. But once that happens, the bed will produce an abundant crop of spears spring after spring for at least the next 20 to 30 years. In the old days, gardeners were told to prepare an asparagus bed by digging an 18" deep trench and then backfilling it with a mix of compost and soil. Thanks to plant breeders at Rutgers University in New Jersey and elsewhere, today's

improved varieties of asparagus are less work to plant (6" to 12" deep is adequate) and produce almost twice as many spears per plant. The production increases are due to the fact that these hybrids are all-male cultivars, so no energy is wasted producing seeds. They also don't produce baby asparagus plants, which can compete for space and nutrients. So forget about Martha Washington and the old asparagus varieties. Most of the new varieties are also resistant to two common asparagus diseases: fusarium rot and asparagus rust. Before planting a new asparagus bed, it's critical to eradicate all the weeds and grasses from the planting area - even if this requires a full year of advance preparation. Asparagus plants will not tolerate weed competition. Even though asparagus can sometimes be spotted growing in a

ditch among thick grass, the domesticated varieties won't survive. No grasses, no weeds. Period. Asparagus crowns are usually available just once a year in early spring. So plan accordingly. Once the bed is weed-free, dig a trench about 12" deep and a foot wide. The crowns should be planted at 18" intervals in the bed, so put a shovel of compost and a cup of all-purpose, organic fertilizer in the trench every 18". Rock phosphate, a natural mineral powder, is another good addition. Phosphorus, which promotes strong root growth, doesn't move through the soil as easily as other nutrients. You only get one opportunity to fortify the root zone, so don't miss your chance. Mix the compost and fertilizer with some garden soil and shape it into a little mound. Set the asparagus crown on top

and drape the roots down around the sides. The top of the crown should be approximately 6" below the soil surface. Cover the roots with garden soil right up to the crown and water well. As shoots begin to appear, add more soil until the trench has been filled back up, level with the soil surface. If grasses or other perennial weeds get established in an asparagus bed it is almost impossible to reclaim the planting. So keep your asparagus bed well-mulched from the start, using shredded leaves or straw. For the first couple years, weed often and carefully - asparagus roots are near the surface and can be damaged by weeding tools. Don't interplant other vegetables in the same bed. Asparagus hates competition of any kind. Originally asparagus grew in swamps and wet places, so maintaining

consistent soil moisture is important for good production. You may wish to install drip-irrigation or a soaker hose if you live in a dry region. Watering is especially important during the first three to five years of growth. To keep your asparagus bed productive, don't be greedy. The first year after planting, you can harvest a few spears from each plant. Pick for about two weeks and then stop so the fronds can unfold and begin feeding the root system. Harvest for three weeks the next year, and four to six weeks after that. Pick too much, and your plants will not be able to develop the strong root system and energy reserves they'll need to produce an abundant crop of spears the following season. The diameter of the spear has no bearing on quality. Spears should be harvested when they

Learn about the right ways of watering In a perfect world, Mother Nature would provide an inch of rain each week to keep our vegetables and flowers perfectly happy. Because that's probably not going to happen, it's up to us to make sure our plants get the water they need to thrive. A rain gauge will help you keep track of how much rain has fallen, but that's really only part of the story. Different types of soil have different abilities to hold water. A claybased soil holds onto water because each

sponges - water still runs through, but some is stored in the sponges. Compost also helps improve clay soils by aerating them and providing better drainage. Plants absorb oxygen through their roots and can drown if the soil stays soggy for weeks at a time. Raised beds and compost can help prevent this from happening. The best way to monitor soil moisture is with your hands. When you stick a finger down into the soil, it should feel

Plants shade the soil surface and help protect one another from the wind. Mulching around plants with 2?to 3? layer of shredded leaves or straw is another effective way to retain moisture and add organic matter to the soil. If you determine that your garden does need water, there are several options. A watering wand will deliver quite a bit of water quickly, and get it right where you want it. Too busy to water during the week? Going on vacation in

Watering plants the right way (Photo: lubbockonline) little particle of clay has lots of surface area for the water to grab onto. Sandy soil, with its bigger particles, lets water pass through quickly. A good loamy soil retains some moisture, yet is also welldrained. Adding compost to the soil improves its ability to supply your plants with just the right amount of water. Think of sandy soil like a wire basket full of golf balls: turn the hose on and the water runs right through. Adding compost is like adding

lightly damp - like a sponge that has been wrung out. Don't just feel the surface; get your fingers down to the root zone (3?deep or so) at least once a week. In hot weather, plants may wilt during the heat of the day. This isn't always an indication that they're moisture-deprived. In many cases it's simply a way for the plant to reduce moisture loss through its leaves. Checking the soil tells the real story. Planting intensively in a raised bed garden minimizes moisture loss.

August? Buy a water timer to automatically turn on a sprinkler or soaker hose. Soaker hoses and drip irrigation systems with emitters leak water slowly right at soil level, and are a very efficient way to water. To keep your plants healthy and productive, don't let the soil dry out completely. If delicate root hairs die back, the plant must direct its energy to re-growing them, rather than to producing fruit. Waterstressed plants can also become bitter and tough.

To prevent your plants hanging their heads in summer, they need plenty of water. But how much, how often, water from above or below? Here you find some smart and helpful facts for watering your plants. Rule no. 1: Keep evenly moist Most plants depend on even moisture. However, slight drying out before watering promotes root growth of the plants. Rule no. 2: Water more seldom but then thoroughly In the flower bed, one to two watering sessions per week are usually sufficient: better to water more seldom but with plenty of water rather than a little water often. Rule no. 3: Water late in the evening or early in the morning When you water cooled soil in the evening or night then less water evaporates than as on hot soil during the day. And the plants can sufficiently supply themselves with water before the next day's heat. Rule no. 4: Keep leaves dry Wet leaves become diseased leaves. Kept wet overnight, leaf-mould diseases may result. Leaves that are made wet in the sun develop slight burn marks (burning glass effect of the water droplets). Rule no. 5: Give the right water quantity Requirement-suited watering means that the water must sufficiently reach the roots. Toolow water quantities often only cover the upper soil centimetres or don't even reach them at all, e.g. when there is a mulch covering of the soil and too

little irrigation. Requirement-suited watering also means that crop plants are particularly dependent upon evenly moist soil in the time until their crops are ripe for harvesting (examples: the forming of roots and corms [carrots, potatoes], leaves [basil, field salad], heads [cauliflower, lettuce], husks [beans] or fruit [tomatoes, fruit]). Rule no. 6: Give larger water quantities in parts Water needs a moment to seep into the soil. Before precious water in the bed flows away unused, it's better to water repeatedly in parts. Rule no. 7: Water with a target but distribute Always watering at only one root point leads to one-sided root growth and thereby to poorer nutrient absorption in the soil. Therefore, always water around the plant and distribute in the entire irrigation area. Rule no. 8: Irrigate in a way that saves water Water as much as necessary and as little as possible. This is simplified with an automatic irrigation system with moisture sensor - in the bed, on the balcony and on the lawn. Rule no. 9: Avoid waterlogging Waterlogging suppresses the breathing air of the roots out of the soil - the root cells drown without oxygen. Rule no. 10: Use quality, clay-rich soil Plant soil rich in clay minerals has better expanding properties and can therefore hold soil in the water better and in a more even way. In wet summers and in winter, ensure water drainage to prevent water logging. Courtesy: gardeners

Representational Image (Photo: healthalwaysblog) are 5" to 7" high and before the tips begin to loosen. Once the tips loosen, the spears become tough and fibrous. To harvest spears, cut or snap them off just above the soil level. Leaving a stub causes no harm to the plant. Once the bed is well-established, harvesting can continue until the bed yields only skinny spears that are less than a half inch in diameter.

Once the harvesting season has ended, which will be in late spring/ early summer, allow the spears to develop naturally. They will grow 4' to 6' feet high, with lacy, light-green foliage. Keep the bed weeded, mulched and watered. The healthier the fronds, the more energy the plants will have for next year's harvest. When fall arrives, the fronds will turn yellow. At this time,

it's generally best to cut the fronds about an inch above ground level and remove them from the area. This will help keep pests, such as the asparagus beetle, from overwintering. It will also make sure your bed is neat and ready to go next spring. Twenty-five asparagus plants will yield more than enough for a family of four. Courtesy: gardeners

Helpful hint for pinching tomato suckers Use your thumb and forefinger to snap off the small, tender shoots that sprout at the base of tomato leaf stems. If you need to use scissors or pruning shears, you've waited too long. Problems Although tomatoes are potentially subject to a range of pests and diseases, plants that are growing in rich soil with adequate spacing and support to keep them off the soil usually have few problems. Here are some of the common potential tomato problems: " The tomato hornworm-a large, whitestriped, green caterpillaris an easy-to-spot pest. Just hand pick and destroy, or spray plants with Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis). If you're hand picking, check to see whether horn-worms have been attacked by parasitic wasps first-if they have, the wasp larvae will have pupated, forming structures that look like small white grains of rice on the back of the hornworm. Leave these hornworms be so the wasps can spread. Also, plant dill near your tomatoes. It attracts hornworms, and they're easier to spot on dill than they are on tomato plants. " Aphids, flea beetles, and cutworms may also attack your tomato plants. " Hard-to-spot spider mites look like tiny red dots on the undersides of leaves. Their feeding causes yellow speckling on leaves, which eventually turn brown and die. Knock these pests off the plant by spraying with water, or control with insecticidal soap. " If you are new to growing tomatoes, check with your county extension agent to find out what diseases are prevalent in your area. If you can, choose varieties that are resistant to those diseases. Such resistance is generally indicated by one or more letters after the cultivar name. The code "VFNT," for example, indicates that the cultivar is resistant to Verticillium (V) and Fusarium (F) wilts, as well as nematodes (N) and tobacco mosaic (T).

" Nematodes, microscopic wormlike creatures, attack a plant's root system, stunting growth and lowering disease resistance. The best defenses against nematodes are rotating crops and planting resistant cultivars. " Verticillium wilt and Fusarium wilt are two common tomato diseases. Should these wilts strike and cause leaves to curl up, turn yellow, and drop off, pull up and destroy infected plants, or put them in sealed containers and dispose of them with household trash. " Another disease, early blight, makes dark, sunken areas on leaves just as the first fruits start to mature. Late blight ap-

when the fruit is about 1/3 developed. The spot enlarges and turns dark brown and leathery until it covers half the tomato. This problem is due to a calcium deficiency, often brought on by an uneven water supply. Blossom-end rot can also be caused by damaged feeder roots from careless transplanting, so always handle seedlings gently. Try to keep the soil evenly moist by using a mulch and watering when needed. " Prolonged periods of heavy rainfall that keep the soil constantly moist can cause leaf roll, which can affect more than half the foliage and cut fruit production significantly. At first, the edges of leaves curl up to form

pears as black, irregular, water-soaked patches on leaves and dark-colored spots on fruits. Both blights tend to occur during cool, rainy weather. To avoid losing your whole crop, quickly destroy or dispose of affected plants. The best defense is to plant resistant cultivars. Bicarbonate sprays can also help prevent the disease from infecting your plants. " Blossom drop, where mature flowers fall off the plant, is most prevalent in cool rainy weather or where soil moisture is low and winds are hot and dry. It can also be from a magnesium deficiency or from infection by parasitic bacteria or fungi. Largefruited tomatoes are particularly vulnerable. Fruit set can sometimes be encouraged by gently shaking the plant in the middle of a warm, sunny day or by tapping the stake to which the plant is tied. " Blossom-end rot appears as a water-soaked spot near the blossom end

cups; then the edges overlap and the leaves become firm and leathery to the touch. Keeping soil well drained and well aerated is about the only method of preventing this problem. " Fruit with cracks that radiate from the stems or run around the shoulders are often caused by hot, rainy weather or by fluctuating moisture levels in the soil. Such cracks, aside from being unsightly, attract infections. To avoid them, make sure you don't overwater. " Tomatoes-like eggplants, potatoes, and peppers-are related to tobacco and subject to the same diseases, including tobacco mosaic. Therefore, don't smoke around such plants, and wash your hands after smoking before handling them. Plan your garden so that nightshade-family crops, such as peppers and tomatoes, are separated by plants from other families. Courtesy: rodales organiclife

Neymar claims 2014 World Cup injury `nearly ended my career`

Neymar ANI Madrid, July 12 : Brazil star striker Neymar has claimed that the severe back injury he had suffered at the 2014 World Cup could have brought a premature end to his booming career. The 24-year-old Barcelona star was ruled out of the pinnacle event after suffering the injury following a reckless tackle from Camilo Zuniga in the quarterfinals against Colombia. "I've had bad times during my career, but the worst moment was in the 2014 World Cup [against Colombia]," Neymar was quoted

as saying by Spanish newspaper Marca. "My childhood dream was to be world champion, but that was destroyed by an injury that nearly ended my career. "It was a very difficult week, but luckily I had my family and friends by my side. It's important to have the support of those that are close you you during those moments." Although Brazil won the quarterfinals 2-1, the absence of Neymar severely cost the hosts as they were thrashed 7-1 by eventual champions Germany in the semifinals.

Ramdin dropped as Chase picked for India Tests Basseterre (St Kitts ), Jul 12 : Veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Denesh Ramdin was predictably dropped from the West Indies squad for the fourTest series against India while uncapped middle-order batsman Roston Chase earned his maiden call-up in the national side. Chase, who also bowls offspin, had recently played in the twoday practice game against India where he managed only 3 runs. However his first-class average in 29 games stands at a healthy 42.87. For Ramdin, who has been a part of the West Indies team for last 11 years, having played 74 Tests, a batting average of 25.87 became his undoing. He had in fact tweeted last week that he would be dropped as he has been informed about it by chairman of selectors and former glovesman Courtney Browne. It also didn't help matters that he was out of form in the recently concluded tri-series against South Africa and Australia, with only significant contribution being a 91 against the Aussies. Among others, left-hand batsman Leon Johnson was recalled but pacer Kemar Roach, who did not perform well against Australia during the away Test series last year, was dropped. Fast bowler Jerome Taylor also did not feature in the 12-man squad as he had informed the board that he is retiring from the longest format, the WICB

stated in a release. He will however be available in the shorter formats. The WICB also intimated that Ramdin has been "sanctioned" for his outburst in relation to his non-selection. In Ramdin's absence, Shane Dowrich will take over wicketkeeping duties. Johnson had a good first-class season for Guyana topping the run charts with 807 runs at 57.64, while Chase was fourth on the table, with 710 runs at 59.16 for Barbados. Shannon Gabriel is the only specialist fast bowler in the 12-man squad, with seam-bowling allrounders Carlos Brathwaite and captain Jason Holder being the other pace options. Legspinner Devendra Bishoo is the only specialist slow bowler in the squad. From the tour of Australia, those who were missed are left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, fast bowler Miguel Cummins and batsman Shai Hope, who had hit an unbeaten century against India in the two-day game. The first Test against India begins on July 21 in Antigua, followed by Tests in Jamaica, St Lucia and Trinidad. WI squad: Jason Holder (capt), Kraigg Brathwaite (vice-capt), Devendra Bishoo, Jermaine Blackwood, Carlos Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Rajendra Chandrika, Roston Chase, Shane Dowrich (wk), Shannon Gabriel, Leon Johnson, Marlon Samuels. Anirban Lahiri Lahiri, a winner of seven international titles, will be spearheading India's campaign at Rio. Anirban, who has been plying his trade on the PGA Tour this season, had enjoyed an exceptional season in 2015

with two wins on the European Tour and a phenomenal tied fifth finish at the PGA Championship, the best result for an Indian at a Major till date. Last year, Lahiri also created history by becoming

the first Indian to be a part of the International Team at the Presidents Cup. He has had a long spell in the world's top-50 in 2016 and had all but sealed his Olympic berth at the start of the year. Anirban will be playing his ninth successive Major when he tees it up at the British Open at Royal Troon in Scotland this week. Interestingly, the Rio Olympics will be Lahiri s second outing at a quadrennial multi-sporting event. He had earlier participated at the 2006 Doha Asian Games where he was part of the Indian team that won the silver medal. (PTI)

Lehmann believes Starc can take 300 Test wickets if he stays fit Melbourne, July 12 : Australia head coach Darren Lehmann believes that speedster Mitchell Starc can join the coveted 300-Test wicket club, provided he stays fit amid mounting workload across all three formats. The 26-year-old has so far taken a staggering 91 wickets in just 25 Tests and the coach observed that Starc's outstanding abilities as a bowler can help him become the fifth Australian to take more than 300 wickets in the longest format of the game. Legendary fast bowler Glenn McGrath is Australia's highest wickettaker in Test with 563 scalps while Dennis Lillee, Mitchell Johnson and Brett Lee are the only Aussies in the 300-club. Starc, who missed the second half of Australia's Test summer due to an ankle injury, will spearhead Australia's bowling attack when the three-match Test series against Sri Lanka gets

Australia head coach Darren Lehmann underway in Kandy from July 26. "He plays all formats. That is the hardest part, managing him through that is going to be our challenge," Lehmann was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au. "Making sure high-priority Test tours, one-day tours, World Cups and all that, are going to be on the agenda, and making sure he is fit for those. "If he stays on the park, he

could (pass 300 Test wickets)." Meanwhile, Australia's interim fast bowling coach Allan Donald said Starc's ability to reverse swing could be the key in the upcoming series. Australia, which became the number one Test side after defeating New Zealand 2-0 in February, will aim to retain their numero uno position after the Sri Lankan series. (ANI)

KP believes `cricket cheat` Amir should have been banned for life Melbourne, July 12 : Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen has joined the chorus of players who believeMohammad Amir should have been given a lifetime ban for his role in the 2010 spotfixing scandal but warned his country's players and fans to sledge the left-handed pacer at their own peril. The 24-year-old, who served a prison sentence in the United Kingdom and a five-year suspension for his role in the infamous case, will aim to erase his sordid past when he will resume his Test career at Lord's-the scene of the fixing

scandal-- on Thursday. Amir, along with former skipper Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif, were then found guilty of various offences of corrupt behaviour relating to the Lord's Test between England and Pakistan in August 2010 by the independent Anti-Corruption Tribunal in February 2011. Pietersen, who was among the England team that played that unfortunate Test, wrote in his latest column for a London-based daily that spot-fixers should be banned for life and that they should not be given a second chance. "They have broken the

Kevin Pietersen rules, should pay the price and not be given a second chance," Pietersen was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au. "If you

cheat the system either by taking drugs or money to under-perform then you are mugging the spectators, your teammates and a sport

that has been around a lot longer than you. "People always deserve a second chance in life but sport is different. "To try and gain an advantage by taking drugs or devaluing your sport by being bribed is breaking the 11th and 12th commandments. There can be no way back." The 36-year-old maverick batsman, however, doesn't expect the hosts to sledge Amir and warned local fans against provoking the Pakistan quick. "He is just as quick, and as competitive as ever. He is verbal. He lets you know he is bowling at you. He will cop a load

of stick off the English fans but he will not take a step back. It is going to make great viewing," Pietersen said. "With guys like him verbals from the crowd or a bit of sledging from the opposition spurs him on to do great things so the fans will not be doing England any favours by giving him some abuse," he added. His comments on the Pakistan bowler echo those of former England teammate Graeme Swann, who said that Amir's return at Lord's would make him feel sick. (ANI)
