The matter has once again exposed the weakness of the security forces deployed in the area to contain militancy. Both the factions of NSCN, I-M and K has been engaged in inter factional clashes in the area for quite some time now, mainly for area domination. Starting from Margherita, the entire belt is rich in resources like timber, tea, minor forest products, minerals, coal, crude etc. Therefore, due to easy earning of ‘revenue’ the militant groups too have started in taking a ‘lion share’ from the mafias who operate in the area as ‘tax’.
