Election results would bring cheers to the public exchequer Mayukh Goswami Mangaldai, May 18
Speculation and analysis on exit poll is all over and it is the time for counting of votes and declaration of results. The results will definitely add colors to the political career of 126 candidates who will be emerged winners where as all other candidates will be surrounded by frustration and possibilities of gloom political future ahead. Amongst the loosing candidates majority of them will not only suffer politically but also economically as they will not even be able to get back their amount which had been deposited along with their nominations of polls. This means the mega democratic phenomenon which incurred
loss to the government exchequer with several crores of rupees at the end of the process has something to cheer about. As per the official statistics, collected with 539 candidates in the first phase and 523 in the second, this time a total of 1062 candidates contested in 126 assembly constituencies of the state. Out of the 126 seats, 16 seats are reserved for ST where as another 8 seats are reserved for SC and as such other 102 constituencies are opened for all. In these reserved seats there are a total of 149 contesting candidates with 53nos from SC and other 96 nos from ST . On the other hand a total of 913 candidates have contested in 102 unreserved seats . According to the sources in the
A view of BJP office in Guwahati, a day before counting. Pic - UB Photos election department , the amount fixed officially as security for a general candidate is Rs 10,000 where as there is
50% relaxation in case of a candidate belonging to SC or ST category . Hence an amount of Rs 7,45,000 have been
collected as security from candidates in the reserved seats while nearly an amount of Rs. 91,30,000 have been deposited by candidates belonging to unreserved category. Meanwhile as per the election norms security deposit of a candidate will be forfeited if he failed to secure one sixth of the votes polled in the respective seat. If we look back to the statistics of the votes acquired by candidates in the last few polls in the state, it will be clearly found that in most of constituencies only the winning candidate and his nearest rival candidate managed to secure above the one sixth quantity of votes. In the last assembly election in Darrang election district consisting of four assembly constituencies, the security
money of 20 contesting candidates out of the total of 28 candidates amounting to Rs 1,80,000 were forfeited . The candidates whose security money were forfeited belonged to major political parties including INC, BJP, AGP, AIUDF and BPF. This time also there is every possibility of security deposit of around 30 candidates among the 40 contesting candidates in the district being forfeited. In such a situation from the statistics of previous election results in the State as a whole security deposit of around 800 candidates are likely to be forfeited and thus the government exchequer will be richer by about Rs 75,00,000 immediately after the announcement of the result .
