Anup Chetia granted bail in two TADA cases, to continue to remain in jail A Staff Reporter Guwahati, Dec 18
ULFA general secretary' Anup Chetia was granted bail by a court in two Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act or TADA cases, but will remain in jail as some other cases against him are pending. Special judge Alokesh Bhattacharya allowed Chetia, alias Golap Baruah, to go on bail by submitting a bail bond of Rs. five lakh and security of the same amount. The plea was made for Chetia's bail for facilitating his trial and for him to participate in the ongo-
ing peace process. Additional Public Prosecutor said the Assam government had no objection to Chetia being granted bail. He will, however, not walk out as there are a number of cases against him. Another TADA case related to the ULFA leader would be heard tomorrow followed by an Indian Penal Court (IPC) case the day after. Chetia had in his first interaction with the media earlier this month said that he was for peace talks between ULFA and the Centre. Following his extradition by Bangladesh on November 11, Chetia was ar-
rested by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Delhi in connection with a murder incident at Golaghat in Assam. Chetia was in Bangladesh jail since his arrest by that country's police in 1997 on charges of cross-border intrusion, carrying fake passports and illegally keeping foreign currencies. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had said that the state government has all along been pursuing with the Centre for repatriation of Chetia and now since he has been repatriated he should be associated with the ongoing peace talks.
Congress feels the heat of tea tribes, road blocked in protest Rishu Kalantri Tinsukia, Dec 18
Months before the Lok Sabha elections, the ruling party Congress witnessed political heat in Tinsukia after tea tribes maha sabha, a crucial chunk of voters as far as Tinsukia vidhan sabha seat is concerned, protested against the ruling party alleging scam vis-à-vis grant of scholarship.
The protesters blocked road at Bahadur charali for several hours alleging that right and deserving students were not getting scholarship due to the scam. The protesters burned effigies of tea tribes welfare minister Etwa Munda and local congress MLA Rajendra Prasad Singh. They argued that though local MLA is not from the tea tribe community he has been included in the selection board from Tinsukia and de-
manded his removal from the board. It is important to mention that tea tribe members are an important chunk of voters in Tinsukia vidhan sabha seat. Against the backdrop of the defeat of Congress tea tribe leader and ex-union minister from Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency in the recent elections, this protest by the members of tea tribes seems to be a danger signal for the ruling party.
Gogoi ready for 4th term as Assam CM, says Himanta’s defection to BJP will help Cong A Staff Reporter Guwahati, Dec 18
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has said he is ready to be chief minister for a fourth consecutive time. He also said the defection of former health and education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to the BJP will help the Congress win next year’s assembly elections. “Yes, I am ready to be chief minister for a fourth time,” he asserted at a media briefing here. His statement comes after he dismissed speculation that his son and Lok Sabha member Gaurav
Gogoi would be projected as the Congress’s chief ministerial candidate saying the latter did not have the experience for the post. He said his onetime blueeyed boy Sarma’s defection to the BJP would help the Congress win the elections to the 126-member assembly expected to be held in MarchApril next year. After having resigned as state education and health minister in July last year, Sarma quit the Congress and joined the BJP in August this year. “Himanta is a homebreaker. He tried to break our (Congress’s) home and now he
will break BJP’s home,” Gogoi said. According to him, Sarma was, at one point of time, willing to be deputy chief minister under him. “Later, he started saying he should be made chief minister instead of me,” he said. Asked if the Congress would have a pre-poll alliance in the state, he the party planned to fight the elections alone. Awareness meeting on Bangladeshi Leopard captured infiltration issue held Shambhu Boro Tezpur, Dec 18
“The illegal Bangladeshi infiltration issue faced by the North-Eastern region over the years is leading the indigenous people of the region into becoming a minority section. The ongoing NRC up-gradation process will provide citizenship to the illegal Bangladeshis.” This was observed by one noted lawyer, Supreme Court of India, Upamanyu Hazarika at an awareness meeting organized by “Probojon Birudhi Mancha, Asom” on the burning topic of Bangladeshi infiltration problem at Sahitya Sabha Bhawan here today.
Representing the Assam chapter of the anti-infiltration platform, Upamanyu Hazarika who has been fighting for the issue through the Supreme Court of India for the last many years addressing a huge gathering further pointed out that the then Central Home Minister Jai Prakash Agarwala admitted in the Parliament on July 14, 2004 that till 2001 there were fifty lakh infiltrators in Assam against the 2.61 crore population which means twenty percent of the population are illegal foreigners. “However, as per the report published in the white paper of the state government of Assam in October 2012 within 1985 to 2012, only 2482 for-
eigners were extradited. Against this backdrop, it can be said that government is giving importance to the issue, but it is a matter of fact that the process is quite slow in detecting Bangladeshis for which 5.8 No. clause of the Assam Accord is allegedly violated by the government. In this clause it was clearly mentioned that foreigners coming after 1971, March 25 to Assam as per law the process of detection, deletion and expelling will be on.” He observed and added that even after the elapse of the 30 years of the Assam accord, no any notable action was seen in this regard, rather through the ongoing NRC up-gradation process the

government is going to provide citizenship to the illegal foreigners posing a serious threat to the very existence of indigenous people of the region. Expressing strong resentment over the shrewdness of every government on the issue the noted lawyer further stated that providing advantage to the foreigners to occupy grazing lands, reserved forests and tribal belt blocks government is giving walkover to the Bangladeshis to avail Indian citizenship. “Mentionable thing is that from December 3, 2004 an individual can avail
