Saffron tsunami hits Assam as BJP and allies knocks Congress out of power Amar Jyoti Borah Guwahati, May 19

Literally a saffron tsunami hit Assam today, as the BJP along with its allies, the AGP and the BPF today managed to win a much expected figure of 86 out of 126 assembly seats in the stat. Though exit polls has predicted a landslide win for the BJP, the congress leadership had all along denied such a victory. The Congress won only 24, AIUDF 14 and independents 2. Several heavyweights including ministers Gautam Roy, Siddique Ahmed, Ajit Singh, Bismita Gogoi, Atwa Munda, Sarat Borkotoky lost the election. The BJP swept the traditional Congress bastions of upper Assam and North bank, and also won seats in the Barak valley, lower Assam, including Muslim dominated areas. The saffron party won all the seats in the upper Assam districts of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, and also won all the seats in the kamrup Metro

district and Nalbari district. Addressing a press conference at Guwahati, BJP CM candidate Sarbananda Sonowal thanked the people of Assam, and said the party will fulfill the aspirations of the people of the state, and also said that all the promises made will be kept. "The big challenges will be sealing the border, infiltration, and unemployment," said Sonowal. Meanwhile, BJP general secretary incharge of Assam, Ram Madhav said it was a significant message for the whole country which has come at an appropriate time. "There was a curiosity about Assam elections across the country. The result is very significant and it is a clear message for the whole country and it has come at the right moment," he told reporters. "Congress is being rejected everywhere in the country and they should draw lessons from this," he said, He said this round of election has its own

significance and it has reflected that Congress "did not learn any lesson from is debacle in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls." "People are still not ready to accept Congress. We have given a call for Congress-mukt Bharat and it seems that people have taken the call very seriously," he said. Madhav said BJP will form the government in Assam under the leadership of Sarbananda

Sonowal and the party is committed to carry forward its development agenda. "We have won the election due to the hard work of our local leadership and workers under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah," he said. After the election results, addressing a Press conference Tarun Gogoi, thanked the

people of Assam, but denied taking retirement from politics. “Winning and losing and ups and downs are part of life, we will be a strong opposition force now,” said Gogoi. The BJP leadership also added that the swearing in ceremony is likely to be held on May 25, and is likely to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and several senior party leaders.

Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has created history by winning all the seven seats in Dibrugarh. The seats which were known as a congress bastion and leaders like Prithivi Majhi and Paban Singh Ghatowar were defeated by the young candidates of BJP. In upper Assam this time BJP had fielded many unknown and fresh faces and all of them showed good results by winning from their respective seats. In Dibrugarh sitting BJP MLA Prashanta Phukan retained his seat for the third time by defeating Chandra Kanta Baruah of the Congress by 27, 374 votes. The BJP supporters were in a jubilant mood bursting crackers outside the counting room in Dibrugarh. "People wanted change. I am happy that eventually we managed to crush the Congress and also managed to puncture the over confidence of communal party like the AIUDF. I want to give the credit to the people of Assam as well as Dibrugarh,’’ Prashanta Phukan told reporters outside the counting hall. in the other constituencies of the district, Rituparna Baruah defeated Prithibi Majhi in Lahowal by a margin of 19, 659 votes, Chakradhar Gogoi of BJP thrashed Congress stalwart

Pic - UB Photo Paban Singh Ghatowar by 16, 231 votes in Moran, Teros Gowala of BJP defeated Dhurba Jyoti Gogoi of Congress by a margin of 17, 086 votes in Duliajan, another fresh and unknown face Bimal Bora thrashed Congress minister Etuwa Munda by 18, 338 votes in Tingkhong, BJP Dibrugarh district President Binod Hazarika defeated another Congress stalwart Raju Sahu by a margin of 30, 754 votes in Chabua and AGP's Naren Sonowal edged out Congress minister Pranati Phukon by a margin of 3, 531 votes in Naharkatia. “Congress has looted us for past 15 years and in the name of development they played with the feelings of people. I hope that the new government will bring

all round development for the people of Assam. In the last 15 years congress rule they drove Assam into backwardness,’’ Rupam Sharma, a resident of Dibrugarh told the Correspondent. However, in Upper Assam it has been quite surprise that the heavy weight leaders like- Paban Singh Ghatowar, Prithibi Majhi, Etuwa Munda, Pranati Phukan and Pradyut Bordoloi have to bite the dust in the hands of comparatively young and unfamiliar BJP candidates. “The heavyweight leaders of Congress were defeated due to their arrogance. It’s a big win for BJP in Assam and in coming days the new government under NDA government will prove by doing developmental works,’’ said a leader of BJP.

Tarun Gogoi who won from the 100 Titabor LAC for the fourth consecutive term and who missed the Chief Minister’s train for his party’s poor performance had sent a special thank message to the people of Titabor who had sent him to Dispur for the fourth term inspite of his busy schedule as a Chief Minister who could not meet or see his people now and then. It was a message sent to his party incharge to Mr. Kumud Kachari through and email. In the mes-

Counting going on in Jorhat. Pic - Nekib Ahmed sage Tarun Gogoi stated that he is sorry but as their party could not do well and it was a big surprise for him after the result output that was declared today, anyway we have lots of works to do and we look forward for

working together for better in coming days, the message stated. Once again I thank my people of Titabor for their love, respect and commitment, as because they have faith on me and they voted me for the power even for the fourth time when a party at the Centre has spent crore and crore of rupees which we being from the Congress could not think to spent the way the BJP did to woo voters. At the same time I also like to special thank to the people of Assam as they have voted for the Congress for which we have begged over 25 seats, stated Tarun Gogoi.

Assembly result to help centre to speed up economic reforms A Staff Reporter Guwahati, May 19

Results of the Assembly Elections in key states including Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam and Kerala, have strengthened Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi who will now be able to speed up economic reforms with help of non-Congress friendly parties like AIADMK and even

Trinamool Congress, ASSOCHAM President, Mr Sunil Kanoria said today. “The NDA Government will certainly find it easier to deal with Trinamool Congress and AIADMK in the Rajya Sabha for passage of crucial bills, mainly the long-pending and the most important, GST (Goods and Services Tax),” said Mr Kanoria.

“At the state level, emphatic return of West Bengal Chief Minister, Ms Mamata Banerjee and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalitha, sends out a clear signal that there is no alternative to the people-centric policies,” said the ASSOCHAM chief.

BPF has been in power in Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) since its inception in 2003.

PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah asked the party workers to focus on local issues and development.

Hence, with this new poll ally, BJP's prospects of coming to power were enhanced.

Infiltration and sealing of India-Bangladesh border were two of the main local issues.

Moreover, BJP broadened its alliance by tying up with AGP too. Notably, AGP and BJP had fought the 2009 Parliamentary elections
