Today a programme was organised at the place of Kargil Martyr Captain Jintu Gogoi in Khumtai . Tributes were paid to Captain Jintu Gogoi and his contributions were commemorated. Prisoner attempts suicide inside court premises at Tinsukia Tinsukia, July 26. In a shocking incident, a prisoner attempted to commit suicide inside court premises by cutting his throat on Tuesday. The prisoner has been identified as Purna Urang. According to sources, the prisoner was facing trial in a murder case. Today, the court convicted him for the crime and fixed August 1 as the date for announcement of punishment. However, he suddenly attempted suicide astonishing everybody. Immediately he was rushed to civil hospital form were doctors referred him to Assam medical college and hospital at Dibrugarh. How a prisoner got blade inside court premises is a serious question that needs to be answered. (Spl Correspondent)

Tinsukia press club calls an emergency meeting over threat to scribe Tinsukia, July 26. Taking a stern view of the steep increase in crime against scribe who are doing their duty, Tinsukia press club called an emergency meeting following a threat to journalist of local Assamese daily, Dainik Janambhumi, for reporting a news matter. The members took a decision to submit a memorandum to the Upper Assam Commissioner and DIG of Upper Assam of Assam police demanding to take strict action against Utpal Baruah based on the FIR registered by journalist Pranab Phukan. The other demand shall also include secuirty of journalists and a high - level time bounded enquiry into the alleged corruption matter of Sarba Shiksha Abhijan exposed by the journalist. Pranab Phukan has exposed an order of the coordinator of Sarba Shiksha Abhijan, Tinsukia compelling all government schools running mid - day meal programme to buy gas connection only from a Panitola based gas agency by paying rupees 7600 per connection including two cylinders, a stove, a hose pipe and a regulator. The BJP led Assam government today presented a budget with a focus on all sections of the society, and put a major thrust on education, agriculture, livelihood and healthcare. With this several items including candles, kerosene stoves, packaged drinking water, cinema tickets, LED bulbs and tubes, citronella oil and feeding bottles would become cheaper. Placing the budget, state finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said while the education sector along with sports, art and culture would get 20 per cent of the budget allocations after 26 per cent for general services, the agriculture and rural development sector would get 10 per cent. Sector-wise allocation of the remaining sum will be as follows: water supply, sanitation, housing and urban development (8%), transport (6%), social welfare and nutrition (5%), irrigation and flood control (5%), and others (9%), besides public

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today called up Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to get first hand information about the flood situation in Assam. In the course of his telephonic discussion, Sonowal apprised the Home Minister about the latest flood situation in the state and the steps initiated by the state government for relief, rescue and rehabilitation of the flood affected people. Singh assured Sonowal that the Centre will provide all help and assistance to the state and would bear the expenses involved in dealing with the flood situation in the state, a CMO spokesman said. Singh also conveyed to Sonowal that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been keeping a close tab on the flood situation in Assam and has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to extend all possible help and support to the flood affected people. "There should not be any grounds for complaint and succour must be provided to the affected people. Special care must be given to women and infants," he said during the video conference with DCs of affected districts here yesterday, the spokesman said. Asking the district heads to ensure proper sanitation in the relief camps to keep diseases at bay, he also also told them to keep sufficient number of country boats to meet any exigency.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu soon after arrival from New Delhi today convened an emergency high level meeting to review the flood situation in the state. Emphasizing the need for preparedness to tackle disaster kind of situation in an effective way, Chief Minister asked all the link departments to coordinate and work out for a State Emergency Mitigation Plan under the supervision of the Chief Secretary. He directed the Disaster Management Department to issue instructions to all the District Administrations to provide sufficient relief materials, Essential Ration Commodities and basic requirements like drinking water to the flood affected people. She said she no longer believes that her fast will lead to the repeal of the "draconian" AFSPA but she will continue the fight. "That is why I will join politics and my fight will continue," said Sharmila who has refused to eat or drink anything since November, 2000.

Assembly elections in Manipur are scheduled in 2017. Sharmila is forcibly fed through a nasal tube in Imphal's Jawahar Lal Nehru Hospital, a special ward of which acts as her prison. She had been arrested, released and then re-arrested from time to time on the charge of making an attempt to commit suicide. The maximum punishment under Section 309 of IPC is a oneyear jail term.

In another setback to the banned outfit Ulfa (I), troops of Assam Rifles under the Dao division of Indian army gunned down an ulfa cadre at Wara general area, south of Jagun in Tinsukia district in the wee hours of Tuesday. The cadre has been identified as Lance Corporal Bhaiti Milli. Security forces recovered one US-made pistol and some live rounds and fired cases. In the wake of the recovery of IED bomb at Tinsukia and Dibrugarh district, the encounter, a day before ulfa's martyr day, comes as a major respite to all security and intelligence agencies engaged in counter insurgency operation. Speaking exclusively to this correspondent, Commander of 25 sector Brigadier D.K. Singh said, based on hard intelligence input an operation was launched at Wara general area on Monday night.
