AP state unit of Chakma National Council of India gets people mandate to work towards unity and progress of the Community and Arunachal at large AP Chakmas to mourn 17th August as their Black Day every year

Prahlad Chakma, VP, CNCI delivering his speech during the meeting at Diyun. ET Correspondent Diyun, July 1

The Chakmas of Arunachal Pradesh gave a thumps up to the Arunachal Unit of the National level organisation of the Chakmas of India, the Chakma National Council of India (CNCI) in the state unit’s first general public meetings held at Diyun. While giving the people mandate to the CNCI- Arunachal Unit to work for the unity and development of the Chakma Community and Arunachal Pradesh at large, the Chakmas of Arunachal Pradesh unanimously voted the organisation as their apex organisation to works towards unity and progress. The meeting which drew almost all the heads of the Chakma villages and the head of the Bigger Council of all the villages of the Chakmas in Diyun circle have also resolved to mourn 17th August as their Black Day every year. Prahlad Chakma, National Vice

President of CNCI and Arunachal State In charge while explaining the history behind this day explained that this day of 17th August is responsible for the misery of the Chakmas of India, especially that of the Chakmas of Arunachal Pradesh. On this day in 1947, though the Indian Independence Act declares Chittagong Hill Tract (CHT) to be as a part of India and thereby Indian flag was hoisted by Chakma Freedom fighter Sneha Kumar Chakma, their homeland CHT was awarded to Pakistan on this day during partition in 1947 which eventually turned out to be the genesis of the suffering of the Chakmas as a race in India. CHT was a part of India and because of the illegal award, the Chakmas had to undergo the misery and human rights violations against them by the then Pakistan Government (currently Bangladesh). After staying in Pakistan only till 1964, the Chakmas of Arunachal Pradesh had to leave East

Pakistan and came back to India. And today, they are being branded as Bangladeshi though they had fought and celebrated the Indian independence. CNCI with its headquarter in Delhi is the only organisation of the Chakmas of India formed with an intention to bring all the Chakmas present in 4 states of the India Northeast, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Tripura and Assam in a common platform nationally. It was formed on the 27th July 2014 in the Silchar Chakma Convention and now led by its president, Nirupam Chakma, ex cabinet minister of Mizoram govt and the incumbent VP of state BJP unit. CNCI have four state units with the unit of Arunachal Pradesh forming at the CNCI National Conference held at Guwahati on 26-27 March last. Somiral Chakma and Amar Bikash Chakma are the president and the GS respectively of the Arunachal State Committee.

Digboi MLA proved to be a man of action, agelong menace of Tinali market finally over Laxman Sharma Digboi.July 1: Proving indeed to be a man of action to the people of his constituency after his recent commitment to shift much disputed and often conflicted Digboi Tinali Daily Market located alongside the busy Old LIC Road, the said daily bazaar has been finally shifted today to an earlier proposed site located within the premises of AOD New market. The joy of the people (except the vendors and shopkeepers) knew no bound to see their dreams turn true with the shift of the market place here this morning after the local BJP MLA Suren Phukon himself initiated the welcome steps and stood stern till the objective was realized.

‘Cracking upon the illegal gambling and clearing the Public road from the nuisance of the Tinali daily market in Digboi was my top priority after considering the public grievances’ remarked Mr Phukan adding ‘the said market along the road had been the menace from ages for the daily office and school goers including the general public causing the traffic congestion beside damping the AOD drains with the market waste causing breeding grounds for several ailments and polluting the entire residential areas on all four sides’ . It is pertinent to add here that several organizations including the Digboi Town Committee, IOC AOD authority and local administra-

tions including the Sub Divisional officials too had failed earlier in their attempts to move the market an inch further due to strong resentment and stiff resistance from the politically backed bazaar Committee. It may be added here that to overcome the said issue, the IOC AOD management had erected a permanent market structure for the vendors of the Tinali daily Bazar with all required amenities within the premises of its well protected and hygiene New Market. Alas! the efforts ended in smoke. In the meantime, Mr Phukon on his return after the swearing in ceremony of the BJP Government in Assam had committed the people of the Oil city during his maiden address to his

electorates to shift the people-hostile Tinali market to the said new location by hook or by crook on or before 1st July 2016. And as true to his tongue, Mr Phukon successfully accomplished his new promise after the fulfillment of the first one pertaining to gambling which till date stands blanket ban in and around Digboi. Talking to the Eastern Today, Mr Phukon assures of all possible reformation in the systems and restoration of services of public utilities simultaneously fixing and uprooting all the malpractices which vitiates the congenial atmosphere and obstruct the growth and development of the people and his place.

forest rights recognition by law, Assam should be declared a dry state and ban all kinds of chewing tobacco with immediate effect, Maintain State Roster System in recruitment of TET qualified teachers, Stop Auction of all categories of Oil fields of Assam to private companies. Demanding stop installation of high voltage electric wire throughout the BTAD and northern part of Assam, the ABSU expressed much concern about the consequences of the installation of the very high voltage electric wire throughout BTAD and northern part of Assam by the Power Grid. ‘There are instances of people in the rural & tribal areas being affected by the supply of power through high power transmission bring causality of one person in Chirang by electric shock on 26 June 2016 and injuring seriously eight others who are now in the hospitals. It has also become a threat to every farmer who has crop growing lands under the wire and in their homes being affected by the electric shock, the memorandum said. On the immediately implementation of the Schedule Tribe & other traditional forest dwellers (recognition of rights) Act 2006, and stop the eviction notice to the indigenous tribal people who are entitled for forest rights recognition by law, it said it is high time that by the provision of the Law they are entitled to be recognized as Forest Dwellers with the rights of land and other facilities as per the Section 3 of the said law. ‘It is well known fact that the tribal being dependent on

the foods obtainable in the forest and agricultural products from their occupied land and such a move by the authority to evict these villagers is a violation of Fundamental Rights of the Citizen, it said..

The union opined that even after repeated demands by many landless people who needs to be granted land rights, it is seen that the land and revenue department of BTC has been allotting large area of land for the outsider private company (like Patanjali Yogpeeth) at Chirang amidst the landless people who are struggling for daily livelihood. It demanded immediate halt of issuing ‘Eviction Notice’ and harassing the indigenous forest dwelling tribes in the state. The ABSU warns to take up strong movements if the government not implements the Schedule Tribe & other traditional forest dwellers (recognition of rights) Act, 2006, within a short period of time. On the recent initiative by the state government appointing TET qualified teachers, the Union expresses displeasure for keeping aside the tribal quotas failing to maintain the roster system in appointment process. ‘This has largely kept aside the tribal youths from employment and increased the unemployment problem. There were many vacant posts which were of reserved quota but these posts are now become extinct after the roster system of appointment process was kept aside, it said and urges the state government to maintain the state roster system in appoint-

ment to meet the problem of unemployment and minimize the problem of education in Assam. On the BJP govt step to Auction of all categories of Oil fields of Assam to private companies, the Union said that auctioning of such public sector oil fields to the private companies would be hampering the means of production and control over resources of the state. ‘The Auctioning would also be leading to the monopoly of private companies on all sorts of benefit in the public sector which is danger to the economy of the state in future, it said and demands to immediately stop the auctioning of 12 oil fields of Assam to Private Companies. ABSU also strongly urge the state government to take strong initiative to control the price rise in the state, so that the large section of middle class and poor people can have right to use all sorts of food and other essential items for their living. ABSU also feels that it is a high time for the State of Assam to declared a ‘Dry State’ and ban all sorts of chewing tobacco in state as some of the major states like Bihar and Tamilnadu has take a firm and humanitarian approach in their state to stop alcohol for the sake of the safe and sound future of the young generation and poor people of the state. Lawrence Islary, general secretary of ABSU,former MPs Urkhao Gwra Brahma,Sansuma Khunggur Bwiswmuthiary and several organization leaders participated and addressed about the demands and issues of the public facing in the region.

Hundreds of trucks were stranded in Manipur Imphal, July 1 : Hundreds of trucks were stranded in Manipur after heavy rains caused landslides in Tamenglong district, officials said. The trucks are loaded with construction material and consumer items and were coming from West Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya to Manipur. Their movements have been hit since Wednesday night, the officials said. Trucks going from Imphal to other states were also stranded along with buses and private cars. District officials told IANS over the phone that if there were more rains in the coming days, the situation would worsen. Officials and labourers of the Border Roads Organisation are working round the clock to clear the landslides. The stranded motorists and passengers were facing major problems, including shortages of food, on the hilly highway, the officials said. The women passengers battled with lack of privacy. Imphal, July 1: Even though TamenglongKhongshang road has been already listed as a National Highway for cons-truction of which Rs 13 crore was sanctioned by the Ministry of Road Transport and High- ways (MoRTH) in 2014-15, the road construction work has not been initiated till date. A well placed source informed that MoRTH sanc- tioned Rs 13 crore to construct the 39.5 Kms long road at the level of a National Highway and the task was entrusted to the National Highway Infrastructure Development Cooperation Limited (NHIDCL). Notably, TamenglongKhongshang road was lite- rally abandoned for the last 10 years and the

Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma Sandipan Chakravorty among others. State governments of the region gave presentations on the possible business avenues in the region, while representatives of corporate houses such as IL&FS,

people of Tamenglong have been demanding its repairing/con- struction every now and then. In spite of the people's persistent demand for development of the road, there is no sign of starting the road construction work any time soon. Nonetheless, tender for the road construction was done and a firm based outside the State was selected as contractor. However, some of the documents submitted by the contractor along with bank guarantee issued by HDFC were found to be either erroneous or forged. Subsequently, the tender process was cancelled and due procedures have been initiated to hold a fresh tender, informed

As the amount of Rs 25 lakh would not be enough to repair the road and make it passable, the same amount was again withdrawn. The question of constructing TamenglongKhongshang road was taken up as an agenda during an official meeting held at Guwahati yesterday where the MoRTH Director General was also present. "The region is better governed for business prospects and there is a need to look at sustainability of business and livelihood in the rural areas of the region leveraging upon the renewable natural resources and human

Tamenglong DC has been asking concerned authorities to take up the road construction work as soon as possible. Apart from the re-tender process, some other factors are also responsible for delaying the road construction work. Although the task of constructing the road was entrusted to NHIDCL, many civil society organisations of Tamenglong prefer BRO to execute the same work. They are also not in favour of the State PWD as far as construction of the road is concerned. Many are of the opinion that it would be more convenient if BRO is entrusted the task of constructing Tameng-longKhongshang road rather than NHIDCL as NH-37

is also under the care of BRO. Subsequently, the Deputy Secretary (Works) made a proposal to the Chief Secretary to hand over the work of constructing TamenglongKhongshang road to BRO. Contrary to the proposal, the Chief Secretary wrote to the NHIDCL asking them to start construction work of TamenglongKhongshang road at the earliest. If the amount of Rs 25 lakh sanctioned to repair the road to passable stage had been entrusted to BRO, the road might have been repaired as BRO has necessary machinery and other construction at nearby places, added the source. Implementation of fishery legislation is necessary to protect the indigenous fish species of Manipur: Prof W Vishwanath Imphal, July 1: In addition to strict monitoring of intro-duction, culture and sale of invasive alien species, effec-tive implementation of fishery legislation is necessary to protect the indigenous fish species of Manipur, said Prof W Vishwanath of MU's Life Sciences Department while delivering RK Sanatomba Memorial Lecture at Konung Hijanga Thangapat Mapan on Thursday. He delivered the lecture on the topic, 'Indigenous fishes of Manipur, impact of habitat destruction and ways to mitigate the problem'. He said that Loktak lake has become a reservoir facilitating the spread of 'intro- duced' species of fishes while many indigenous fishes are losing its

habitat. Manipur valley was very rich in native species of fishes in the past. However, many of these species have vanished after the introduction of Indian and Chinese carps by the Government in 1980s, he said. The major traditional fishery in Loktak lake was for Pengba and Sareng in the past. However, Pengba is now nearing extinction due to introduction of Common Carp. Now, the fish has been declared regionally extinct in the wild, the Professor said. Ngaroi, Sarengkhoibi, Ngaten and Ngatin are now missing from the lake, he said and added that these are replaced by Grass Carp, Common Carp, Kandla and Tilapia. Moreover, construction

Implementation of fishery legislation is necessary to protect the indigenous fish species of Manipur of Ithai barrage has disrupted migration of fishes from the lake, and some species have lost their spawning habitats, he said. Since a large number fish species are endemic in Mani-pur, there is an urgent need for conservation which requires both fund-

ing and political will, the Professor observed. He said that afforestation and extensive social forestry must be encouraged to reduce habitat degradation. He further said that discharge of untreated municipal sewages and use of agro-chemicals in river catchments must be con-

trolled. Prof Vishwanath said that restoration of rivers and lakes are required to maintain water quality and restore the migratory routes of fishes. RK Sanatomba Memorial Journalist award was conferred on 'Hueiyen Lanpao' Reporter Ashem Bebicha at the function. The award carries a certificate, shawl and a cash prize of Rs 20,000. Manipur Cultural Integration Conference president A Brajakumar Sharma and veteran journalist K Madhumangol graced the occasion as presidium members. 'Kangla Lanpung' (Vol X, Issue 1) was also released at the function. Earlier, the gathering offered flowers at the photograph of RK Sanatomba.(Agencies)

Charantala temple in Meghalaya all set to get a major facelift Tura , July 1 : The scenic beauty of northeastern states makes them stand apart from many other parts of India. These states are home to several religious sites which attracts devotees from across the world. The Charantala temple in West Garo hills' Babedpara is all set for a major facelift and is expected to attract more tourists to this quaint little place in Manipur. The Charantala temple is being revamped to promote it as a popular religious site. The temple attracts 10-15

lakh pilgrims every year from across the country and is considered the "most visited" pilgrimage destination in Garo hills of Meghalaya. The temple is located at Selsella in West Garo hills, about 55 km from the town of Tura. Mumbai architect Chandra Shekhar Rao has come up with a plan for the temple. "We have not received any funds from the government so far, but presently have received an assurance that the government is willing to provide assistance. We have received

generous donations from devotees and managed to gather funds to begin our new construction," said Ram Singh, one of the members of Charantola Kali Puja Welfare Society. The reconstruction work of the temple is likely to begin within a month. Immensely popular among the Hajong and Koch tribe, the temple was built in 1965. According to the folklore, the temple was constructed after an epidemic struck the village, leading to huge loss of life. Prayers and offerings were made to goddess Kali on the in-

structions of a fortune teller from Bangladesh, which apparently put an end to the deaths. In the last five decades, the temple was built with generous donations from the devotees. A three-day annual prayer ceremony is held during the month of April or May as per the Hindu calendar. The devotees believe their wishes are fulfilled on offering prayers at the temple. "Initially, only the local Hindu population offered puja here, but slowly the temple rose to prominence and devotees from differ-

ent parts of the country started to flock here," said Jibendro Narayan Koch, Secretary, Charantola Kali Puja Welfare Society. For Hindu devotees from Meghalaya, Assam, West Bengal, Nepal and Bangladesh, the temple is considered a "must-visit" site to pay obeisance to goddess Kali. The authorities urge the government to pay attention to the development of the temple so as to make it a popular destination among the devotees, thereby drawing more tourists to the state. (ANI)

Confront law rather than indulging in political propaganda: Naqvi New Delhi, July 1: With the Congress targeting Justice S.N.Dhingra, who is probing the Vadra land deals, of being used by the BJP for 'political witch-hunt', Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Friday said that instead of indulging in political propaganda the grand old party must pay heed to legal processes. "Everyone in the Congress must understand that sins are not washed through political propaganda. And they are thinking that their wrong doing will be hidden by this political propaganda. Law is doing its work and instead of indulging

in political propaganda they should confront the law. I would like to suggest them to stop this," Naqvi told here. The Congress party had earlier criticized the judicial commission-led by Justice S.N. Dhingra for the delay in probing land licences issued to companies, including that of Robert Vadra's, in Gurgaon and said it was being used by the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) for political witchhunt. Seeking resignation of Justice Dhingra, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala asserted that the former has compromised his posi-

Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi tion on the behalf of undue advantage leveraged to him by the Haryana Government-led by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. "Justice Dhingra has clearly compromised his

position, by accepting undue favours from Government of Haryana for a trust of which he is chairman. He is no longer fair and prejudiced and consequently in the highest tradition of the democracy,

we expect him to resign as the judge of the commission," said Surjewala. Late on Thursday, Justice Dhingra, in a letter to Khattar Government, informed that he was to submit the report today. But before he could proceed to Chandigarh he received a bunch of sale deeds from someone who said that these documents are about 'benami' transactions of those who benefited from the grant of licenses. "I was to submit report today. But before I could proceed to Chandigarh I received a bunch of sale deeds from someone who said that these documents are about benami transactions of those who ben-

efited from the grant of licenses," he said in his letter. "Therefore, I deferred my Chandigarh visit to consider these documents. I need six more weeks time. If no extension is granted, then I will submit my report tomorrow itself," the letter added. Haryana government had earlier twice extended the term of the Dhingra Commission of Inquiry. The controversy around Vadra is based on a 3.5acre plot in Gurugram, which he bought in 2008 for Rs. 7.5 crores and sold just months later for 58 crores to DLF, India's largest real estate developer. Pashtun nationalist leader says Khyber Pakhtunkhwa belongs to Afghans

Pashtun nationalist leader says Khyber Pakhtunkhwa belongs to Afghans Islamabad, July 1: Pashtun nationalist leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai's statement that Pakistan's KhyberPakhtunkhwa (K-P) province 'belongs to Afghans' has stoked a fresh controversy. In an interview on Thursday with a Kabul-based English daily, Pushtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Chief Achakzai said that "K-P belongs to Afghans and they can live there without fear and irritation". Achakzai added "I will not allow anyone to harass Afghan refugees in their own land. If Afghans are harassed in other parts of Pakistan, they should come to KP where no one can ask them for refugee cards, because it also belongs

to them," reports the Express Tribune. Lashing out at Achakzai's comments, K-P Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak said the PkMAP chief has 'humiliated all Pakistanis'. "The people of K-P gave their verdict in favour of Pakistan, not Afghanistan, in 1947," Khattak said Chief Minister Khattak adding "Does Mehmood Khan Achakzai still envision a Pakistan without K-P?" As Achakzai's remarks sparked condemnation in Pakistan, he issued a clarification and insisted that he had been referring to K-P's historic background before the Durand Line agreement and did not say the province belonged to Afghans. Myanmar, Uzbekistan blacklisted on the U.S. human trafficking report N a y p y i d a w (Myanmar), July 1: The United States released its annual human trafficking report and added eight countries, including Uzbekistan and Myanmar, to the blacklist of those not putting much effort to control the scourge. "There's a lot of information in here; a lot of studious work goes into thinking it through," said Secretary of State John Kerry while releasing the report yesterday and added that "There are some tough calls" but the results are based on facts and not on political considerations. "There are some folks in

here who will obviously be concerned about the conclusions, but the conclusions are based on facts and based on a lot of analysis over a year," said Kerry. Last year's report by the State Department was criticised for not including Myanmar on its Tier 3 list, amid allegations that Washington was turning a blind eye to slavery in order to encourage a slow transition to democracy, reports the Myanmar Times. This year's report on Myanmar calls it "a source country for men, women, and children subjected to forced labor and for women and children

made any significant impact on the ground," said Kristen Abram, acting director of anti-trafficking umbrella group ATEST. She further said "With Malaysia, we know that they were moved up last year for political reasons. It was unjustified then and it remains unjustified today." Myanmar, Uzbekistan blacklisted on the U.S. human trafficking report subjected to sex trafficking, both in Burma and abroad". Human rights watchdogs, however, mentioned that Thailand and

Malaysia were not being held to account. "Starting with Thailand, we have seen some willingness to reform some of their laws, but it's not

China says strongly dissatisfied with remarks of US official on NSG, South China Sea Beijing, July 1: China on Thursday strongly objected to a senior Obama Administration official's comments, where he accused Beijing of derailing India's bid for membership in the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and termed the latter's position and actions with regard to the South China Sea as "madness". In his daily media briefing, the spokesman of the China's Foreign Ministry, Hong Lei, referring specifically to U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Tom Shannon's comment that Beijing must be held accountable for deliberately blocking India's bid for NSG membership, said, "Remarks by the US official on the NSG show no regard for facts. The entry of India was not on the agenda of the NSG

Plenary Meeting in Seoul, and there was no discussion about the entry of any specific non-NPT countries." Lei further stated, "As was told in the press statement of the meeting, "Technical, Legal and Political Aspects of the Participation of non-NPT States in the NSG" were discussed at the meeting. Individuals and countries must not put themselves on the opposite side of international rules." On Shannon's South China Sea comment, Lei said, "We are strongly dissatisfied with remarks made by the US official on the issue of the South China Sea. China holds a clear position on this issue. We maintain that territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests must be defended, and that disputes be resolved by countries directly concerned through

dialogue and consultation in a bid to safeguard regional peace and stability." "It is highly irresponsible for the US official to make such remarks with the intention of sowing discord and stirring up troubles in this region. We urge the US side to honor its promise of not taking sides on the issue of sovereignty over the South China Sea, and work constructively for peace and stability of the region, rather than the opposite," he added. On Wednesday, Shannon, who is currently on an official visit to India, in a veiled attack on China, had said that only one country had broken the consensus in the atomic trading bloc (NSG) (of allowing India to become a member) and insisted that such members should be held accountable.

He asserted that Washington is committed to ensuring India's entry into the NSG and expressed "regret" that Washington was unsuccessful in making India a member of the bloc in its pleanary in Seoul last week. "We understand that in a consensus-based organisation, one country can break consensus. But in order to do so, it must be (held) accountable, not isolated," he said. "I think what we need to do going forward is, for both of us India and the US, sit down and take a call what happened in the Seoul, take a close look at the diplomatic process which is significant and see what more we can do and how we can ensure that next time we are successful," he said during an interactive session at the Foreign Service Institute in New Delhi. Calling India an "anchor

of stability" in the AsiaPacifc region, Shannon also said what China was doing in South China Sea is "madness" and added that the United States is keen to see New Delhi play a major role in the Indian Ocean. He further stated that managing the rise of China was a major challenge and that the United States wants to work with India to have a strong and comprehensive presence in the Indian Ocean. Describing India a responsible and important player in the sphere of nuclear non-proliferation, Shannon said, "We are committed to having India join the Nuclear Suppliers Group. We believe that through the kind of work we have done, the civil nuclear agreement, the way India conducted itself, it is worthy of this." (ANI)

Former Afghan lawmaker asks Hekmatyar not to act on instructions of Pakistan's ISI Farahnaz Ispahani resigns from PPP post vilification campaign against Husain Haqqani Karachi, July 1: Renowned Pakistani author and journalist Farahnaz Ispahani has tendered her resignation from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) post vilification compaign against her husband Husain Haqqani, former Pakistan ambassador to the United States. In a strongly-worded letter addressed to PPP's chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Ispahani said that she cannot find a place for herself in a party where space for many schools of thought, faiths, castes and creeds has shrunken. "It is with a heavy heart that I write these words. I entered politics at the urging of your mother, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. I hope to always follow in her path of dignity and the politics of conscience. However, with distance and thought I find that I cannot find a place for myself in today's PPP. Therefore, I tender my resignation from the party," she said. "What made the party different to others was the space for so many schools of thought. For so many faiths. For so

many castes and creeds. That space has shrunk. The years distancing us from the life of my leader have affected the core of the party and there are too many in the leadership for whom being in power is the only politics they understand," she added. Ispahani, who has written a book on the plight of minorities in Pakistan, further asserted that the way in which many party loyalists, including Haqqani Sahib, who worked with the chairman's mother and the party were treated was appalling. "My husband and I plan to continue with our scholarship and public life outside the PPP. I will always be there for you and your sisters if you ever need me in any way. May God bless you and always keep you safe," she said. In 2008, Ispahani joined the National Assembly of Pakistan as a Member from the PPP, representing the Sindh province in the reserved seats for women. This development comes after the PPP had last week disowned Hussain Haqqani.(ANI)

Kabul, July 1: Leader of the National Participation Party of Afghanistan and former lawmaker Najibulllah Kabuli has urged Hezb-e-Islami militant group leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar not to act on the instructions of Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) which has been accused of supporting Afghan militant groups. Speaking at a press conference in Kabul on

Friday, Kabuli asked Hekmatyar to answer to the demands of the Afghan people and return to the country to join the peace process.

Former Afghan lawmaker asks Hekmatyar not to act on instructions of Pakistan's ISI

Kabuli added "Our message to Gulbuddin Hekmatyar is to refrain from listening to ISI instructions if you are truely an Afghan son and love Afghanistan," and added that Hekmatyar will prove he is working for ISI if he did not join the peace process and re-

frain from violence. The remarks by Kabuli come as Hekmatyar published an article in a magazine run by the group and said that peace talks with the Afghan Government have entered into a deadlock and is effectively dead. Hekmatyar said the Afghan Government must be dissolved, claiming that the majority does not accept it, the Khaama Press reported. Earlier, an official of the group said

Hekmatyar had issued new demands for a peace deal, including cancellation of pacts with the United States and a timetable for the withdrawal of foreign troops. Hekmatyar is the former Prime Minister of Afghanistan and a designated "global terrorist" by the United States following his militant opposition to the U.S.-led campaign in Afghanistan. (ANI)

Yesterday, Pakistan has extended registered Afghan refugees' Proof of Residency (PoR) cards for six months, until December 2016. The uncertain residency status of Afghan refugees living in Pakistan has encouraged police harassment, threats, and extortion, said the Human Rights Watch report. "The Pakistani government's move to

residency until the end of 2016 sends an important signal to police and local officials not to harass or coerce Afghan refugees to leave," said Phelim Kine, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch adding that an extension to the end of 2017 would allow more time for the situation in Afghanistan to stabilize, so that the refugees can return in safety. The report added that threats by Pakistani officials over the past year have exacerbated the Afghans' insecurity. On May 24, 2016, Balochistan's provincial Home Minister, Sarfraz

the Afghan refugees can return voluntarily, with respect and dignity, or the people of Balochistan can humiliate them and throw them out of the country." On June 27, Pakistan's minister for SAFRON, Lt. Gen. (Rtd.) Abdul Qadir Baloch, announced that Pakistan would undertake a "new tougher policy" toward Afghan refugees. Kine said the Pakistan's government should protect Afghan refugees from vindictive reprisals linked to cross-border tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.(ANI)

Dhaka (Bangladesh), July 1 : A Hindu priest washacked to death by three motorcycle-borne men in front of a temple in Bangladesh's Jhinaidah district on Friday. According to reports, 45year-old Shaymanonda Das was apriest at the Radhamadan Gopal Bigraha Math inJhenaidah district. He was walking on a highway adjacent to his temple early in the morning when three men riding a motor-cycle attacked him, reported

AFP. Bangladesh has seen a surge in attacks on liberals and religious minorities in recent times. Islamic extremists are said be behind such attacks, with Islamic State having claimed responsibility for some of the killings. Earlier this month, a Ramkarishna Mission staff in Dhaka had received a threat letter allegedly sent by the militants. The mission authorities had, on receiving the threat letter, filed a complaint with the Wari Police Station. (ANI)

Istanbul airport attackers identified as Russia, Uzbek and Kyrgyz nationals Istanbul, July 1 : The three militants who carried out the Istanbul airport attack have been identified as nationals of Russia, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, according to the Turkish government. Senior Turkish officials cited the home nations of the attackers but did not immediately release their names or other details. There has been no claim of responsibility, but Turkish officials have said they believe the Islamic State was behind the carnage at Ataturk Airport, reports the Washington Post. In one of the deadliest attacks in Turkey, three suicide bombers attacked the arrivals hall and a nearby parking lot with gunfire and explosives, killing 44 people and leave 239 others wounded at the Ataturk Airport. Many of the victims killed in the attacks were foreign nationals of Saudi, Iraq, Tunisia, China, Iran, Ukrain, Jordan and Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan has faced occasional attacks by Islamist militants since the 1990s, and Kyrgyzstan recently launched crackdowns on suspected Islamic State recruitment. Russia's Dagestan region - alleged home of the third attacker - has been caught up in clashes between Russian forces and Islamist fighters since the late 1990s. (ANI)

Nepali Ambassador to Malaysia accused of shielding illegally operating visa processing companies Kathmandu, July 1 : The Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies (NAFEA) has accused Ambassador for MalaysiaNiranjan Basnyat of shielding illegally operating visa processing companies and demanded his recall by the government. The association alleged that Basnayt is increasing the financial burden on the Nepalis who reach Malaysia in search of employment in complicity with organisations like VLN Nepal, Biometric, Migrame and ICS, involved in the visa processing for Nepali migrant workers. The association appealed the government to shut these organisations as they are, allegedly, operating illegally and overcharging the Nepali migrant workers and, Basnyat is protecting them rather than taking action. At a press meet on Thursday, Association Chair Bimal Dhakal also alleged Ambassador Basnyat of barring its team from for holding meeting with the Malaysian Labour Minister. The team is included in the trip of Minister for Labour and Employment Deepak Bohara, who is presently on a visit to Malaysia. The Association has demanded Nepal to sign a Labour Agreement with Malaysia within next three months to ensure rights of Nepali migrant workers and also rescue the workers who fell victims to these visa organisations and have been sent to jail.(ANI)

India and Bhutan: Cross-Country Power Connectivity

India Enters Elite Missile Tech Group India joined an exclusive club of countries controlling exports in missile technology, just a day after decrying its exclusion from the Nuclear Supplies Group or NSG, which governs international (Photo: indiandefencereview.files) nuclear fuel and technology. Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar signed onto the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) aimed at preventing the unchecked proliferation of missiles and their delivery systems. The Foreign Ministry, in a statement issued soon after signing the accession document in the presence of the ambassadors of France, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, thanked the other 34 members of the MTCR group for supporting its inclusion. Italy had initially objected to admitting India but, after an unrelated bilateral dispute was resolved, did not object within a 10-day deadline after the group's chair, the Netherlands, wrote to members suggesting India be welcomed. India's entry into the regime as its thirty-fifth member would be mutually beneficial in the furtherance of international non-proliferation objectives. Admission in the MTCR was seen as the next step for India in legitimizing its nuclear energy and missile programs after it conducted atomic tests in 1998 that alarmed the international community. The MTCR restricts the proliferation of missiles, rocket systems, unmanned air vehicles, or drones, and the technology for systems capable of carrying a payload of 500 kilograms for at least 300 kilometers, as well as systems intended for the delivery of weapons of mass destruction. In 2008, India signed a landmark civil nuclear deal with the United States giving it some access to nuclear materials and technologies. Since then, India has been pushing for its inclusion in the various elite groups that control the export of nuclear materials and regulate technologies relating to conventional, nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. Last week, at a plenary meeting of the nuclear group NSG in Seoul, India's membership to the 48-nation group that controls access to sensitive nuclear technology was shot down after China raised procedural hurdles. India, still smarting over being denied entry, and hit out at Beijing, saying that the issue of its membership of the nuclear group was not going to go away External Affairs ministry spokesman said New Delhi had taken up the issue with Beijing at multiple levels. And are going to continue discussing this with China. This is going to be an important element of our discussion with China. And will continue to impress upon them that relationships move forward on the basis of mutual accommodation of each other's interests, concerns and priorities. China is not a member of the MTCR, however. Beijing's application to join the MTCR is pending, leading to some analysts in New Delhi to say India could use it as a bargaining chip to leverage its entry into the nuclear group.

Solar Energy Power India of the Future India's plan to ramp up solar power generation to 100 GW by 2022 is among the largest in the world. It will help bring sustainable, clean, climate-friendly electricity to millions of India's people. The World Bank Group (WBG) is helping India deliver on its plans with more than $1 billion in lending over FY 2017. This is the Bank's largest-ever support for solar power in any country. The WBG is also backing the India-led International Solar Alliance which aims to promote solar use globally by mobilizing $1 trillion in investments by 2030. From installing solar panels on rooftops to setting up massive solar parks it will catapult India to the forefront of the global effort to bring electricity to all, mitigate the effects of climate change, and set the country on a path to become the 'India of the future'. India pledged that it would derive at least 40% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2030. This includes plans for the development of 100 GW of solar energy by 2022, an extremely ambitious target considering the world's installed solar power capacity in 2014 was 181 GW. And in a first for the state of Meghalaya, Loyola College in Williamnagar in Meghalaya's East Garo Hills has set a benchmark for itself by becoming a fully solar-powered institution in the state. In February last, a 15-MV solar power project was installed at the academic block of Loyola College, Williamnagar. The institution conceptualized the need for the project, as the power supply at the institute was irregular and fluctuations in power supply and lightening had caused extensive damage to the electronic goods. the institute generates twice the electricity it consumes through solar power plants installed on the roofs of the three-stored academic block. Since February 2016, the institute has been self-reliant in energy and produced 10 KW. By installing the solar energy project, the institution is saving on the cost of electricity. The institution terms the investment for the future, as generation of students will learn about the use of green and renewable energy, which is available in plenty in Garo hills. The college established in 2010 by the Jesuit Fathers and Brothers has filled the gap in providing higher education in East Garo Hills. Generating clean renewable electricity is crucial for India where nearly 300 million people-about a quarter of its population-live without access to electricity. Today, India is one of the lowest per capita consumers of electricity in the world; even when people are connected to the electricity grid, they face frequent disruptions. Add to that the projected economic growth and the increase in population, and the demand for energy in India is expected to double by 2040.

capacity have resulted in a crisis situation. According to latest official estimates, peak electricity deficit in the country remains at 2.4 percent, a vast improvement from 13 percent a decade ago, nonetheless a significant gap that needs to be reduced. Coal-based energy and hydropower are the two primary contributors to India's power sector, with coal occupying almost 60 percent of the energy mix. While there has always been a low supply of highgrade coal in India, the summer of 2012 witnessed a double jeopardy: hydropower, which supplies 21 percent, or 38,106 MW, to India's power sector, decreased by almost 20 percent of its normal generation capacity due to a delayed monsoon. Drought spells disaster for India, which relies heavily on rainfall for its agricultural production. More frequent occurrences of El NiĂąo have increased the incidence of droughts in the country. As expected, demand for electricity increased as more groundwater had to be pumped out to meet irrigation needs. Four years after the 2012 event, there are two significant observations to be made regarding India's energy sector. One, the present national government upon assuming power in 2014 shifted the trajectory of the power sector towards renewable and clean energy. This is in line with India's domestic and international commitments to combat climate change, as reflected in its ambitious intended nationally determined contribution. India has committed to reduce emission intensity of its GDP

by 33-35 percent (compared to 2005 levels) and achieve 40 percent cumulative electric power installed capacity from nonfossil fuel-based energy resources, both by 2030. Given India's history of chronic power shortages due to the unavailability of coal and natural gas supplies, these initiatives will help the country accomplish a step change in the long term. Two, India is now proactively diversifying its energy sources by increasing regional power imports. With domestic energy supply unable to match demand growth, India's dependence on imported energy is inevitable. In this respect, a successful power-trading relation with the neighboring country, Bhutan, demonstrates the huge energy gains from such integration. Ever since the 1960s, when India began investing in Bhutan's largely untapped hydropower sector (accounting for almost one-third of India's total hydropower potential), both countries have enjoyed a mutually beneficial arrangement. Despite its own immense endowments of water resources, India has not been able to exploit its hydropower potential. Over 93 percent of the total potential in the north eastern region remains untapped, primarily in parts of the Brahmaputra river basin due to regulation and implementation issues. In this scenario, India's relationship with Bhutan serves as a major boost to India's power sector. Reliability and trust form a key pillar in the IndiaBhutan bilateral relations. During the 2012 blackout the Indian government

Bandh - Culture

Police dousing a fire during bandh (representation purpose) (Photo: mmofmanipur)

Sir, Assam is confronted with good number of burning issues and as anticipated by many, the ugly face of 'Bandh Culture' is again surfacing to cripple the life of the people. There are myriad of ways one can ventilate ones ire or grievances against certain decision of the Government, state or central. People of Roha want the AIIMS should be established at Roha. In our humble opinion, we like to add that for acquiring a reputed institution of the stature of AIIMS warrant many requirements including infra-structure, communication, mainly Rail-RoadAir, that apart there are some other contenders for the prestigious institution. As far as, we know, people of Dibrugarh, too, wanted it keeping in view the availability of the aforementioned communication and of the fact that Dibrugarh, long before Guwahati has been playing the pivotal role in rendering medical services to the people of the entire north east. The British established the first Medical college and Hospital of Assam taking into account its salubrious climate. Again, the decision of the center

to hand over the Public sector Oil wells to Private agencies provoke the people. The ABSU's demand for a separate state, the S/C, S/T status for the six ethnic groups are many such issue that displeased the people. There are many instances, where poor students of CasteHindu, Muslims and Christians are deprived of the benefits because of the 'Reservation' policy. We felt, asif a thorn in the flesh. In a world as it is to-day as no other country of the world maintain or divide their citizens the way India has been doing since independence. It is axiomatic that all the people have a pent-up grievances. If all the people become agitated, ventilating their ire there would be such an outburst that words fall short to explain. 'Bandh' - Culture is reprehensible as nobody has the right to dictate terms to others to get peopled stranded or holed up.

approached Bhutan for assistance to meet its power deficit. The emergency power brought in on a priority basis was used to electrify the Delhi Metro, the prime minister's residence as well as a leading hospital in the national capital and restore the Eastern grid. It is true that India's power sector, largely handled by loss-making public sector companies, is in dire need of a long-term strategy. However, the solution to the electricity dilemma is not limited to solving bottlenecks in the domestic power sector. Diversification of energy sources to increase power generation capacity is just as significant, especially in view of the rising demand for energy on account of an expanding manufacturing sector, rising domestic power consumption due to urbanization and increasing integration of previously unconnected households into the power grid through various government schemes. Reliable power supply is an important aspect of access to electricity. This can only be resolved by investing in technical infrastructure that increases availability of power. Regional interconnectivity could help countries manage power shortages, improve efficiency and also prevent colossal failures such as breakdown of a national power grid as witnessed in 2012. India's bid to import 10,000 MW surplus power from Bhutan by the year 2020 and support for the Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal (BBIN) agreement of the SAARC nations is a promising strategy with high future dividends in energy security. World Trade Centre. The Act of Terrorism 9/11, the day that changed America. The worst chapter in the 'war against humanity' that cannot be erased, not merely from the pages of history but from the hearts and the minds of the American citizens. It shook the empire of the world largest economy so strongly that it not only forced the Americans to go to war but also left a great impact on the world economy. The world in 2014 grieved over the killings of school children in Peshawar when the spawns of Lucifer opened fire at the children at point blank range in an attempt to restrain Western education in their province. I say,"The smaller the coffin, the heavier it is to carry," every time killings of innocents hits the headlines.

An act of terrorism (Photo: media2.s-nbcnews) How can one claim his religion as the most righteous of all? Before the existence of religion, man's inner self lent credence to the idea that there must be a body somewhere in the vastness that created all things. So, in our attempt to seek an answer, religion came into being. Both the man from the far north and from the far south who had no knowledge of each other sought the same truth and came out with two different beliefs. The concept of religion is older than the hills and it is unwise to condemn other religions unless they advocate terror, destruction, killing of innocents, and religious conflict. It's a small world today but wasn't yesterday. We have communication satellites and technology, but the concept of religion is older

There are certain forces that act as agents of destruction. We see them everywhere. We see them in Paris, in the USA, India, the UK, we see them everywhere. One never knows when the wall will collapse, one never knows when public stations and carriers will blow up. This is what terrorism has brought to this world. No man is now safe, even in his sleep, even in places of worship, and even in the womb of a mother only because the hands of terror are such that there is no place they can't breach. There was Bin Laden and Al Qaeda, and now the Islamic State (ISIS). All took pride in picking up arms and spreading global terrorism. The cycle of mass destruction never set its feet to rest. It took only a dozen to bring down

Its impact was so diabolical that every time when it's brought up it brings tears to many. But it is glory for the fanatics. How ignorant and evil is man in justifying the killings of thousands of innocent people? What can justify killing another man who has done no wrong to you and with whom you have never met? There is no glory in killing. It is a diabolical force that teaches fallacy and has blinded the reason of man. These jihadist fundamentalists pose a serious threat to world peace and the freedom to live. If God appears in Man, why would a gunman go on a shooting spree that claimed 49 innocent lives and wounded several others? What has ISIS fed the man that he took pride

in killing innocent people? And when will America pass a stricter act for regulating firearms? Selling of guns over the counter and easy access to firearms has cost America an inconsolable loss in recent years. Jihad - the holy war - is a strong word misinterpreted by man. Jihad, as understood by the radicals is far beyond the understanding of regular people. Both Muslims and Christians waged wars. Christians call it Crusade and Muslims call it jihad - holy war for both. But today's jihad is a new breed. The killing of innocent people by suicide bombers appears to be the new philosophy that contributes to mass killings of innocent people in the name of Allah. I don't think Allah will have any interest in this 'jihadist' feud. If disputes regarding trade and commerce are the main reasons for bitterness, then why do we have to bring Allah in this 'commercial' war? Quran is a holy book, not a compilation of war propaganda and business texts. What is the point of spending all your life rediscovering religious teachings to be an opportunist? There's at least one television preacher I know of who is very proud of underrating other religions by interpreting every verse from the Bible, the Quran and the Gita. Man should stop being an opportunist and manipulating 'simple minded' citizens. There is a story of a man whose son was slain for being liberal. There is a story of a brother whose sister was slain for seeking education. There is a story of a mother whose son was taken away by jihadists. There is a story of a Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai. These are stories of radical fanaticism. These are stories of religious misinterpretation. Every religion discourages killings, war, greed, savagery, but most people miss that most pivotal message it tries to convey - humanity. Humanity is the greatest religion for God resides in Man. People should have more common sense and stop being misled. Courtesy: Youthkiawaaz

prove to be counter-productive for the island nation. China is one of the major exports market for the EU. A slowdown in the EU economy with the leave of the UK may result in the unwanted slowdown in the Chinese economy. If things go down as such, a gloomy question looms over: will China then be interested in setting up deals with the UK enabling the latter to achieve its original objective? However, as of now, most of the major mining companies feel strongly about continuing their presence in the UK. Many of these have their primary stock listing in the London Stock Exchange, prominent among them being BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Glencore. Even the Indian mining giant Vedanta Resources has

Image for representational purpose (Photo: alexedmans) its listing in London. The Russian company, Polyus Gold is the largest London-listed gold producer and has decided to stay on. The same cannot be said for Nord Gold NV, another Russian company, which is prospecting a listing shift to Toronto after Brexit. Another perspective of focus is the environmental laws enforced by the EU. Most of the mining companies are notoriously infamous for their

disregard of environmental laws. This behaviour was checked under the laws laid down by the EU which all its member states must abide by. EU's environmental laws were the catalyst for the UK's own environment related laws. The EU also conducts technological and scientific research in these areas and provides guidance on the implementation of these rules. With Brexit, the UK has

to bear the cost for an independent study and the further enforcement of its law. Among other priorities, the environment, in the past, has often borne the brunt of lack of resources and time. With so many openended questions, the future of Brexit is certainly very muddy to predict. Only time can tell, how Britain will cope with the crisis at hand. Courtesy: Youthkiawaaz

TRUTHOSOPHY @... Tagam Mibang that, every matter in the God's balancing act or Karma for simplified understanding.. Beneath the whole physicality of Universe, Planet, Natural World lies the realm of energy or soul or the infinite power and intelligence of the Creation that drives it all along in the journey of infinity. Human science also tells

Universe is made up of atoms, electrons, protons, the smaller atomic units and lastly the deepest realm of energy. It's a matter of fact that, indeed the whole Cosmos is absolutely hollow from inside. It's the magic of God and his Creation that, beneath the infinitely huge physicality lies a complete hollowness; and a complete hollowness is surrounded by an infinite physicality inturn.

The infinite dimension of energy or soul of Universe is the realm where, every thoughts and activities of every person makes continuous interaction with it. Morally rightful and positive thoughts and actions of an individual leading to flow of positive energy synchronises with the infinite positive energy of the Cosmos to effect harmonious evolution of existence. Whereas sinful thoughts and activities of a person

leading to negative flow of energy; flow of soul swims against the Omnipotent flow of Omniscient Soul of Cosmos to ultimately get demolished and transformed in an alternate state that is harmonious with the functioning of order of Creation. That's the basis of God's balancing mechanism or Karma and it works in the Cosmos invariably and infallibly.

IT in the Mountains There's a young "techie" waiting outside the DC's chamber. She is staring intently at her outsized mobile; the familiar blue Facebook theme is visible as I sit beside her, watching her nimble fingers rapidly typing on the screen. "Can you think of an aspect in our daily lives which has remained untouched by Technology?", I asked her intrudingly - out of curiosity. After a long pause, "Practically none", she replied, without stopping her rapid typing. History has exhibited time and again that "Information is power". The time - honoured truth is that wars were won, empires ruled and rebellions crushed by those having control over vital information. Since the 1990's, the world witnessed the marriage of Technology with Information - ushering in possibilities transcending human imagination. The internet invention brought about a revolution which led to democratisation of Information. Information was no longer preserve of the few - those in control of resources and/or power, potentially changing the entire power equation. As I sit on the wooden benches of the waiting hall, in the midst of sea of visitors, wondering at this extraordinary marriage which has revolutionized the world around, the girl finally looks up at me and adds, 'Did you know about the Digital India mis-

Sonam C sion?" I hesitantly shook my head, attempting to conceal my ignorance. "The Digital India Mission has the mandate of taking all aspects of governance through the IT route.", she said. "It means that soon we won't need to sit on these hard wooden benches and wait for getting basic citizen services. We can do all this, sitting at home, on our computers or even mobile phones.", she added with a kind smile. I imagined the consequences - A paradigm shift in how governments will run and how citizens will respond to this transformed environment. We hear of how both government and citizens benefits from such interventions. "Do you really believe that's possible? I mean, can this really happen in our State?" I queried with spontaneous scepticism. "Arunachal Pradesh too, like many other states, has taken up this mission. However, it will be unfair not to admit that there are bottlenecks, difficult though not unsurmountable. Our terrain - vast, rugged, forested coupled with the sparse population throws up challenges which needs to be tackled by thinking out of box.", she countered passionately. She continued with optimism, "Having said

this, a lot has already moved towards the direction of success of this mission. A robust fail free network, a sine qua non, for the success of this mission is under progress. As on date the state already has about 1300 KM of Optical fibre cables laid and more than 5000 KM is being laid with a timeline of 2017. VSATs, Microwave Towers and other non-conventional means are also being deployed for both mobile telephony and internet. For the storage of information, a State Data Centre (SDC) will be put in place soon-a storehouse of information- practically all the data of the State." Amused, I replied, "All this technology confuses me. Tell me how can I sit at home and get my govt work done? Sometimes, I don't even get proper network service!!!" She also smiled and replied, "Rome wasn't built in a day! The government is working on improving your network connectivity on priority. As for the citizen services (government issued documents, renewals, payment of utility bills etc) - these will be through the e-District and the State Service delivery gateway (SSDG) platform. This means that the citizen-government interface will be online and you need not come physically to each office personally." By now, even I was getting intrigued; "How will this happen? What do I need to do to make sure this happens? Do we com-

mon citizens need to do anything?" Quickly typing something, the young girl (I hadn't even asked her name!!) showed me her mobile screen. Something called AADHAR NUMBER with some instructions was on the screen. "What's that?" I asked. "Aadhar Number is the next important tool because all govt delivered benefits must reach the right person and in correct measure. So far, 70% of the population have already been allotted with Aadhar numbers. Have you got yours? It's very easy to do - I can help you or you can go to your nearest Centre and get registered. Do you want me to do it for you?" she asked. Just then, a peon called my name and signalled me towards the DC's chamber. Smiling at her offer, I thanked her and queried as I was leaving, "What do you see when all this is done?" Serenely she replied, " I visualise an aged e-literate mother in a remote village smiling, while browsing a smart phone, seeing her daughter's ST certificate, messages of her grandson's education stipend and her old age pension credited in their bank accounts and her family's PDS items' delivery date - all mailed from the DC's office". FOR A BETTER FUTURE The Centre is planning a special package, incorporating labour reforms, subsidies and duty incentives, for the leather sector to boost investment, jobs and exports.

About 2.5 million people are employed in the $12 billion leather industry. The sector, like textiles, predominantly employs women.

To increase productivity, the leather sector package may include labour reforms similar to those introduced in the textiles package.

The move comes after a similar package was unveiled for the textile industry on June 23 to enable it to compete globally.

India accounts for about 10 per cent of the world's leather production, and is the world's second largest producer of leather garments and footwear.

Foreign investors in India include Feng Tay Shoes and Apache Group (both from Taiwan) and Itares (Italy).

overseas markets from countries such as China. When contacted, DIPP officials said there could be more such presentations. However, they added that since ILDP is a Union cabinet-approved scheme, any changes to it would need a Cabinet nod for which a Cabinet note has to be circulated for comments from other ministries. They said the current ILDP scheme would be in place till March-end 2017 and any changes to ILDP or a new package is likely to be implemented only in the next fiscal. The ILDP, introduced in January 2014, was aimed at "augmenting raw material base through modernisation and technology

upgradation of leather units, addressing environmental concerns, human resource development, supporting traditional leather artisans, addressing infrastructure constraints and establishing institutional facilities." The leather industry package may include higher incentives under the Duty Free Import Scheme (DFIS). Under DFIS, a manufacturerexporter or a merchant exporter having a tie-up with a supporting manufacturer is currently allowed duty-free import of inputs up to three per cent of the value of exports realised in the previous year. In the new package, this may be raised to five per cent, the sources said. (Agencies)

Del Bosque steps down as Spain manager ANI Madrid, July 1 : Spain football manager Vicente del Bosque has confirmed he is stepping down from the post just three days after his side's last 16 exit from the European Championship. The reigning champions' hopes of securing their third consecutive Euro title were dented after they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands Italy in their pre-quarters clash. Although Spain's elimination is expected to be the reason behind Del Bosque's decision, he claimed to have already prepared his mind not to continue as the team's manager much before the tournament . "Without a doubt, I have no intention to remain as coach, but you have to be discreet. No matter what the result of the Euros, I had no doubt about what my future would

Vicente del Bosque be," the 65-year-old was quoted as saying by goal.com. Del Bosque will end his hugely successful eight-year spell with the national team on the expiry of his contract next month.

Sevilla and Athletic coach Joaquin Caparros is likely to succeed Del Bosque as England's new manager. Del Bosque, who replaced Luis Aragones as Spain manager in 2008, led the side to World Cup glory in 2010.

Shastri resigns from ICC post PTI New Delhi, Jul 1 : Former India captain and Team Director Ravi Shastri has resigned from his post as media representative in ICC's prestigious Cricket Committee. Incidentally, the chairman of ICC Cricket Committee is current Team India coach Anil Kumble, who pipped Shastri to the job after getting nod from high profile Cricket Advisory Committee. "I have already submitted my resignation. There are personal commitments and I have been there for six years," Shastri told PTI on Friday without further elaborating anything. The official reason is his busy media commitments as commentator, TV expert and columnist, but there is intense speculation that the former all-rounder may have resigned as he is yet

Ravi Shastri to come to terms with rejection that led to a widely publicised spat with Cricket Advisory Committee member Sourav Ganguly. "Just like Sourav, Ravi is also an emotional man at one level. He is yet to come to terms with rejection. Since he became a media representative as BCCI nominee, probably, he is not willing to continue in that post. Also with Kumble expressing his opinion to con-

tinue as chairman, it might just be uncomfortable for both of them to sit in a meeting," a BCCI source told PTI today. "Also media representative is more of a decorative post in ICC Cricket Committee." A few days back when Anil Kumble was named the chief coach, Shastri said that one of the Committee members Ganguly was not present when his interview was being conducted. Shastri had termed Ganguly's absence "disrespectful" to which the lefthand batsman retorted saying that the Mumbaikar was "living in fool's world". "If Ravi was so serious about the job, he should have been in Kolkata for interview rather than appearing through Skype while holidaying in Bangkok," Ganguly had said.

Misfiring Ronaldo `amazing` in Portugal's win over Poland: coach Santos Shashi Kumar ANI New Delhi, July 1 : Indian body builder Shashi Kumar, who clinched a gold medal in the World Championship in Slovenia's Koper city, was given a warm welcome on arrival at the IGI Airport here on Friday. Shashi's supporters and well-wishers, who gathered in large numbers

outside the IGI Airport, cheered for him on his arrival. The ecstatic fans later lifted Shashi as he flaunted his IBFF 2016 trophy. Shashi bagged the gold medal in small category at the championship hosted by the International Body Building Fitness Federation ( IBFF ).

ANI Paris, July 1 : Portugal coach Fernando Santos has described skipper Cristiano Ronaldo's performance as 'amazing' despite his failure to score a goal in his side's 5-3 penalty shootout win against Poland in the quarter-finals of the Euro 2016 in Marseille on Friday. Applauding Ronaldo's exemplary performance against Poland, Santos insisted the star striker doesn't need to score to have a good game.

"I don't talk about individuals but Pepe and Cristiano played an amazing game, I think people undervalue them. People focus on CR - he has to score goals, goals, goals, but he has been playing amazing, he's an amazing captain," Santos was quoted as saying by goal.com. The Portugal coach was also full of praise for `immense` player Pepe and goal-scorer Renato Sanches. "Renato played a great game, he still has a lot

Cristiano Ronaldo to offer, he's still growing, the Renato Sanches

you saw today is not the finished article, he will

be better in the future," the 61-year-old added. After both sides settled with a 1-1 draw at the end of the regulation time and the extra time, Portugal and Poland were taken to penalties to decide the winner. Star striker Ronaldo netted the opening penalty to put his side in lead before Poland's Robert Lewandowski levelled the score. Renato Sanches and Joao Moutinho then scored their respective penalties for Portugal, but

Arkadiusz Milik and Kamil Glik once again equalized the score for Poland at 3-3. Midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski then missed a crucial penalty for Poland as Nani and Ricardo Quaresma guided Portugal to the semi-finals of the European Championship. Portugal will now aim to book their place in the finals when they take on their undecided opponent in Euro 2016 semi-final clash on July 7.
