Most battles are fought and won inside our head. Hence, maintain a positive outlook today. The stars grant you the ability to double your efforts, and allow your imagination to take flight and chart new routes to success. This should curb your frustration of the last few days. If you begin to feel physically drained, just fall back on your reserve of mental strength to push you through. All in all, today, you shall reach your targets. You will enchant people with your adaptability and your desire to gel with your surroundings. For those who are in love, something unexpected may take place, but there is no need to panic as by and by things will turn out to be in your interest. You will spend quality time with your family. Strengthen the bonding in the family by taking on responsibility and honouring your family traditions. Well, today is just not your day. The prospects sure aren’t looking too good. However, there’s no point in getting anxious over this triviality. Remember, ‘not good’ does not necessarily mean bad. In any case, if it’s a stressful day you have had, be sure to have an equally enjoyable evening. You may want to discuss certain intimate issues with your sweetheart today! The day just went from bad to worse today. Troubles are coming in faster and thicker than a locust swarm. But keep a leash on yourself, and steer clear of it all. Take criticism in your stride today and pay attention to what is being said, not who is saying them. Today, arranging meetings with customers and suppliers will eat into most of your time. Your patience will enable you to listen to suggestions and opinions offered by people. The result of all this, however, is slated to be most favourable and productive. You have always been generous by nature, but your benevolent attitude will do you no good. People will try, almost blatantly, to take advantage of you, and for once, you will feel that being crafty and unrelenting would have helped kept those blood-sucking leeches at bay. But as the day progresses, you will thank the Almighty for all the precious things he made you the guardian of. Your trust in him will remain unshaken. You will aim for the bull’s eye today. Whatever you’ll do today, will be done with your focus set firmly on your target. You will not waste your resource on something unfruitful, and such an attitude will make your journey smoother and faster. By the end of the day, you will surprise everyone around with your spectacular performance. A highly productive day awaits you. You will be driven to succeed, and filled with energy and enthusiasm to achieve your goals. Meetings with your superiors ought to yield some much anticipated results.

dia persons, he expressed this thought criticising the role of Congress and BJP on this issue. He appealed the sons of soil throughout the world to be integrated in order to protest the coming up of big dams. of soil. “They want to destroy the flora and fauna for the interest of the corporate sector”, he said. He advocated a nation-wide agitation against big dams. He suggested the communities not to be persuaded by the false promises made by Congress and BJP. "Gana Mukti Sangram should organise an integrated agitation against big dam" he added.
flood relief for Assam, says Tarun Gogoi
A Staff Reporter Guwahati, Dec 5: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said the Centre has shown its lackadaisical attitude towards Assam when it comes to releasing flood relief fund. In a statement here today, Chief Minister Gogoi said that the Centre’s lackadaisical attitude in the matter of flood relief fund to Assam has come to the fore as it is yet to send an assessment team to make a survey of the damages caused by floods this year that claimed several lives. Gogoi said that the Centre is yet to depute an assessment team despite assurance by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and that the State has been left in the lurch. “At the time of floods the Union Home Minister gave assurance that there would be no dearth of relief fund to flood-hit Assam. Several months have elapsed, the Centre is yet to depute an assessment team to the State,” said Gogoi adding that the laidback approach of the Modi-led Government has added to the woes

of the people. The Chief Minister said while the Centre is quick to announce special packages for Jammu & Kashmir and Tamil Nadu, it is yet to send a fact-finding team to Assam to take stock of the damages wrecked by floods this year. “The Centre is quick to respond when calamities like floods hit other States but when it comes to Assam and other North Eastern States, it is always found wanting,” Gogoi said, adding, “How could such a laidback approach help in boosting Modi-led Government’s Act East Policy?” “The Centre has also not provided any separate flood relief fund to the State. Whatever amount we have got, that is due under the SDRF. In any case, we would have received it,” Gogoi added. The Chief Minister said, in addition to SDRF, the Disaster Management Act has provided for giving special Central assistance to any State through a separate fund called National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to
deal with any situation arising out of various natural calamities. "The Central Government has not sanctioned any special funds under NDRF to flood-hit Assam for the current year's floods," Gogoi said, adding that the State was yet to receive the special Central assistance under the NDRF for last year's devastating floods in the State. Gogoi said that the State Government has submitted a memorandum to the Ministry of Home Affairs seeking total funds for Rs 1526.19 crore which include Rs 860.17 crore for breaches in embankments, Rs 200 crore for restoration of roads and bridges, Rs 208.63 crore for crop damage, Rs 67.10 crore for repair of anganwadi centres, Rs 37.95 crore for repair of school buildings, Rs 59.04 crore for repair of fully and partially damaged houses, Rs 58.69 crore for rescue and relief operations, among others. 64 people died and 36.67 lakh people were affected in the five waves of floods this year.
In her specific message to the HoDs, she instructed them not to depute subordinate officers who cannot catch up the subject matter should strictly be avoided, Khosla said in her deliberation. Earlier the ZPC Kaling Dai insisted the house on keeping in touch with the panchayat leaders while executing any developmental scheme in their respective areas. The executing agencies should share information to them so that ZPMs could closely monitor all developments and participate in such meeting for fruitful discussion. DPO cum Member Secretary Ponung Boring urged to furnish completion report within speculated time as per guidelines and added that irregular submission of quarterly report, utilization certificate and photos to authenticate the created assets hinder getting the next installment from the government. “The Congress high command has taken these overenthusiatic steps by some of the legislators as a breach in party discipline. Therefore, the high command is reportedly not paying much interest on the issues being raised by the legislators from the anti-Tuki camp”, the sources said. Figure wise however again the Plan-B too seems ‘a hard task’ for the anti-Tuki camp
since even if the 11 BJP MLAs extend support from outside the government which is considered to be an option, it will be only 32 only. The magic number to form the government is 40 in the 60 member house. “If we can manage 21 MLAs we can manage a few others too. In any case we need a change in guard in Itanagar”, a close aide of a Congress legislator from the anti-Tuki camp said from New Delhi.

Reserve. Their sons, Azad and Bablu, have also forayed into the illegal trade of wildlife goods. They moved to Madhya Pradesh as the authorities in Rajasthan were looking for them. Hari Singh established his base in Kelaras in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh and continued his business of wildlife trade. With the rise in demand for pangolin scales in the last few years, Hari Singh forayed into the pangolin trade creating and maintaining trade linkages with other traders and poachers. His wife, Munni, turned out to be an expert carrier of illegal wildlife material. It is believed that women make good carriers of illegal wildlife materials since they don’t arouse suspicion. Munni has been transporting illegal wildlife goods to and from poachers and buyers. Hari Singh was arrested in the process of dealing in pangolin scales after which his house was raided and more material were seized including wild boar hair, peacock feathers, mongoose hair and more pangolin scales. Munni confessed to being a part of the trade for more than 20 years and would travel to MP and Rajasthan into the settlements of hunting communities and strike a deal with poachers. She would collect
various illegal wildlife goods and accompanied by other women she would transport the material to Morena and sell them to traders. Their sons, Azad and Babloo, also got in to the family business and were trading in wildlife goods across three states while the Special Operations Group of Rajasthan Police was searching for them. The information about them came from a conservationist friend based in Rajasthan with whom WTI team was in touch. Initial contacts were made with the suspect through a decoy and Hari Singh being a master of illegal trade was suspicious from the first moment and the multiple sessions of brain games started between the suspect and the covert team. As Hari and his gang was already in established business of pangolin scales, they were not ready to meet a new buyer, but over a period of

few months carefully planned moves, the team won his confidence and the operation took place. “It’s a great operation and our joint efforts helped in nabbing a wanted and established wildlife trader. When conservation NGOs and enforcement agencies work together, it can turn out to be very successful just like it happened in this operation,” said Ravi Shrivastava, PCCF (Wildlife), Madhya Pradesh, who was closely monitoring the whole operation. WTI is doing a study on the poaching and trade of pangolins across India and the information collected during the study is now being analyzed to build intelligence which could result in such operations across the country. The team is already planning ‘Operation Shield– II‘ in a different location and initial moves have already been made.

Wanted Wildlife Trader Couple Arrested with 27.5 Kgs of Pangolin Scales Gwalior, December 4: In a covert operation assisted by WTI, Hari Singh and Munni, husband and wife, were apprehended in Gwalior and 27.5 kgs of pangolin scales were seized from them. It is a huge development in busting the pangolin trade racket since they are a crucial link to the trade that has been flourishing for the last few years. Madhya Pradesh Forest Department (MPFD) in co-operation with Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) was able to apprehend the accused after a regular and steady surveillance using phone and modern tracking devices. Pangolin scales are high on demand for various reasons and the trade has been going on for several years. However, this has been the first major development in busting this module. It is expected that ‘Operation Shield–I’ could reveal linkages to other poachers, middle men and buyers. Hari Singh and Munni have been active in running a successful wildlife trade network for about 20 years in the states of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Both of them are wanted in tiger poaching cases in Rajasthan since 2005 and are booked in association with tiger poaching and trafficking near Ranthambore Tiger

Polio can only be prevented through full vaccination. Since 1988, when the global polio eradication initiative was conceived, the global incidence of polio has been reduced by more than 99% and the number of countries with endemic polio transmission has fallen from 125 to three: Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Every polio free country in the world eliminated polio through the use of OPV. However all countries remain at risk of polio re-infection or re-emergence, until the disease has been eradicated everywhere. Oral polio vaccine (OPV)
has a unique ability to build mucosal immunity. Although IPV has a limited capacity to induce mucosal immunity when used alone, new evidence shows that when used in conjunction with OPV, IPV can boost mucosal immunity even more effectively than OPV alone. IPV is considered very safe, whether given alone or in combination with other vaccines. It protects children against all three strains of poliovirus, and when used together with OPV, can boost immunity. IPV can be administered to prematurely born infants at the recommended age con-
current with other routine vaccinations. No serious adverse events have ever been reported following vaccinations with IPV, including when used alone or in combination with other vaccines. Both IPV and OPV can be administered to the child at the same time. It is in best interest of the child to receive both vaccines at the same time to maximize protection against polio and minimize missed opportunities to fully immunize children. At least one dose of IPV should be given to children in addition to multiple doses of OPV, as a part of routine immunization activities.

Bhubaneswar, Dec 5: Drought-affected farmers in Odisha need immediate compensation in order to survive the impact of crop loss, an inter-ministerial central team said on Saturday after assessing the dry spell situation in the state. "I do not think the farmers will be able to survive this kind of yield. They definitely need compensation. We will give a favourable report," K S Srinivas, joint secretary in the Agriculture Ministry, told reporters here after
reviewing drought situation in the state. Stating that the crop loss was "extensive" and up to 80 per cent in some districts, Srinivas said, "We observed that yield of paddy crop has come down and in some cases there is no sowing at all, field remained fallow. In some cases there is no grain at all." Srinivas was leading a 10-member team that visited the drought-affected areas of four districts of Kalahandi, Balangir, Bargarh and
Nuapada. The team members held discussion with district officials at the field level and shared their observations with Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi and other government officials here. They also met Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the Secretariat. Replying to a question, the central team leader said they would submit the report of their visit as early as possible. "May be, we will submit the report within two weeks," Srinivas said. Asked whether their assessment report would give a complete picture of drought in the entire state as they visited only four of the 26 districts hit by the calamity, Srinivas said: "It is not possible on our part to go to all the districts. It is generally done in a sample manner." On the suggestions made to mitigate the drought situation, Srinivas said the state government needs to improve irrigation facilities and stress on micro-irrigation, particularly
in the KBK (KalahandiBalangir-Koraput) region. "The state government can take advantage from different irrigation schemes of the government of India," he said. "We also observed that apart from rainfed areas, drought is also there in irrigated land. The land in tail-end of canal could not get water," Srinivas said, adding that the central team has taken note of the impact of the drought on the farmers. Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) P K Mohapatra claimed that the central team has appreciated the state government's report on the prevailing drought situation. Of the 13.41 lakh hectare of land affected by the drought, 12.95 lakh hectare were rainfed areas, he pointed out. Mohapatra said the state government has already submitted two interim memoranda seeking central assistance of Rs.2,199 crore for drought m i t i g a t i o n measures.(Agencies)
The fishing boats had been missing for the last one week Chittagong, Dec 5: Bangladesh Coast Guard has jailed 164 fishermen in Chittagong and seized 13 Indian fishing trawlers which had sailed into the neighboring country's waters last week. West Bengal Sunderbans Development Minister Manturam Pakhira told reporters here that the fishing boats had been missing for the last one week and their whereabouts became known when a fisherman from Bangladesh rang up the
West Bengal United Fishermen Association (WBUFA) on Friday. The WBUFA was told by the fisherman that all 164 fishermen had been put in a jail in Chittagong, one of whom, Sanjib Samanta (40) from Kakdwip, had died after a heart attack two days ago, he said. The minister said attempts were being made to establish communication with Bangladesh Coast Guard for the release of the incarcerated Indian fishermen. (Agencies)

Manipur bills: Fresh deadline, fresh tensions New Delhi, Dec 5: With agitators in the Manipur valley setting a fresh deadline for the state government to implement three controversial bills and the people of the hills continuing to vehemently opposing this, renewed tensions have loomed over the northeastern border state. This week, the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) that spearheaded a threemonth-long agitation earlier this year in the Valley, set a fresh deadline of December 15 for the Manipur government to implement the three bills, failing which it threatened to resume its agitation from December 16. The people of the Valley carried out the agitation demanding the enforcement of an inner line permit system (ILPS) similar to one that are in force in Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Nagaland to check the influx of nonManipuris into the state. The JCILPS says that ac-
cording to the 2011 census, Manipur's population is 2.7 million. Of this, only 1.7 million are indigenous people while the rest are people who have their roots outside the state. Ostensibly to safeguard the rights of the indigenous people, the state government, bowing to the pressure from the agitators, convened a special session of the assembly on August 31 and passed three controversial bills the Protection of Manipur People Bill, the Manipur Land Revenue and Land Reforms Bill (Seventh Amendment) and the Manipur Shops and Establishments (Second Amendment) Bill. The very day the bills were passed, protesters, mainly comprising tribal organisations, torched five houses belonging to Congress legislators. Among them were the dwellings of Health and Family Welfare Minister Phungzathang Tonsing and Lok Sabha member
from Outer Manipur Thangso Baite in Churachandpur district. The violence and resultant police action left at least nine people dead. According to the tribes inhabiting the hills of Manipur, the three bills would directly undermine the existing safeguards for the tribal hill areas regarding landownership and population influx, as the primary threat for the tribal people came not from outside the state but from the Meitei people of the Valley itself. The protests of the tribal people spread to New Delhi, with the Manipur Tribal Forum, Delhi (MTFD) holding rallies and submitting memorandums to the president as also to union ministers, including those of home, tribal affairs and development of northeastern region (DoNER), seeking the centre's intervention in resolving the issue. The MTFD, along with
the Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the three bills, the All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) and women's organisations, have said more than once that they did not trust the state government. They want the central government to convene a tripartite meeting and have demanded a separate administration for the hills. With President Pranab Mukherjee not assenting to the three controversial bills and the centre yet to act on the demands of the tribal people, matters have reached a stalemate of sorts. On Wednesday, however, Khomdram Ratan, convenor-in-charge of the JCILPS, held a press conference in Manipur capital Imphal at which he said that the indifferent attitude of the state government has led to the three bills rotting in the president's hands. "If the state government really wanted to save the indigenous people of the state, they should
pressure the central government," media reports quoted him as saying. On Friday, an indefinite strike launched by the MTFD in the national capital demanding the withdrawal of the bills completed one month. Nine symbolic coffins laid out at the protest site at Jantar Mantar reveal the most tragic side of the whole saga - the bodies of the nine people killed in the protests in Churachandpur are still lying in a hospital morgue with the families refusing to claim them till the demands of the tribal people are met. "The state government should have taken all stakeholders on board before passing the bills," Mani Charenamei, former Lok Sabha MP from Outer Manipur constituency, told IANS at the protest site here. Charenamei is of the opinion that the Imphal dispensation should be more sensitive to the
demands of the tribal people. "Now, if both the parties step up their movements, the state government will be compelled to somehow resolve the issue," he said. Addressing the protesters, the former MP said: "It has become very clear to the state government that the tribal people are not at all happy at the way they are being governed." Meanwhile, on Friday, an MTFD delegation met Satyendra Garg, the newly appointed joint secretary (northeast) in the home ministry, and apprised him of their demands. "We were told that all memorandums and other documents that we had submitted have been sent to the judicial wing of the ministry," J. Moivio, coconvenor of the MTFD, said. "Action can also be taken only when the remarks from the judicial wing come in," he added. (Agencies)

Rahul slams PM, says won't let India develop on 'tears and blood' New Delhi, Dec. 5: Launching a blistering attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday alleged that the initiatives launched by the BJP-led NDA Government were not benefitting the labour class and was instead trampling their rights. "Prime Minister Modi thinks that the India labourer is corrupt and can work in fear. He thinks he can break and discipline them. The labourers are scared and are living in fear. Modiji, try and secure their children's future and then
watch how far they take India," Rahul said while addressing the 31st plenary session of Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC). Accusing the Prime Minister of waging a war on the labour class, Rahul asserted that the government, which should be neutral, has deserted the labourers and is trying its level best to bring them down on their knees by reducing their basic security and necessities. "When the Congress was in power, we created a safety net for the poor and Modiji is still trying to break it. We provided
Chennai floods: NDRF shifts focus to relief work, over 16,000 rescued
NDRF DG OP Singh Chennai, Dec. 5: With the rains having slowed down in Tamil Nadu and the surrounding areas, the NDRF has now shifted its focus from rescue to relief work and will deploy its teams with the aim to persuade people to leave their homes and move to safer areas. "Looking at the predictability to the IMD department, we have stepped up our deployment in Tamil Nadu and surrounding areas. A total of 50 NDRF teams are here and this is so far the most massive deployment in any flood related situation," NDRF DG OP Singh told. Emphasizing on the large scale of the relief work, he added that the operation consisted of more than 1500 jawans and over 200 inflatable boats are still at work rescuing people. "We are trying to step up our activities, especially where it's still waterlogged. We are also persuading people to leave their homes so
we can evacuate them safely. We are also using social media extensively, our helpline is working very effectively and we have inducted a number of technological driven operations," Singh added. Earlier, Indian Navy Ship Airavat arrived at the Chennai port from Vishakhapatnam for relief work and began deploying teams laden with amenities and supplies focusing mostly on rescuing marooned people from the waterlogged areas. Chennai painstakingly tried to restore normalcy as the torrential rains slowed down to light showers, leaving a window open for rescue and relief works to be stepped up. Special trains are being run and flight services are expected to resume partially from today. Meanwhile, support has been pouring in across the country to Chennai as relief funds, supplies and amenities are making their way to the rain-hit state. (ANI)

helped them out without fail. But when Modiji formed the government, he tried to kill the Land Acquisition Bill that was passed by us thrice," Rahul said. Talking about the 'Make in India', the Congress vice-president questioned the beneficiaries of this initiative and how it was helping the labour class. "Acche Din, Swacch Bharat, Make In India and now Accessible India. God knows what's coming now after this. When the Prime Minister talks about growth and development, who
is it benefitting? He has a vision to make India a global manufacturer and I agree with him, but only till this point. My idea of Make in India is very different from his. He thinks he can make labourers work by force and motivate them with fear," Rahul said. Swearing to continue his fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for labourer's rights, he added that he does not want India to prosper on the back of the 'tears and blood' of the labour class. 'Immature' Kejriwal capable of only staging 'dharnas': BJP New Delhi, Dec.5: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a tirade against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), saying they are only capable of carrying out 'dharnas' (agitations) as they have never done apart from that. "Kejriwal doesn't know how to work. There is so much immaturity in his attitude as well as his ministers. He has never handled administration. He and his party are only capable of carrying out agitations as they have never done anything else," BJP leader Shazia Ilmi told. "He only keeps on raising fingers at others. The policies that he is making regarding pollution, dengue, roads, garbage, etc. all have been badly handled. Whatever promises he made before coming to power, none of them has been fulfilled," she added. She also alleged that the AAP chief was only good at making false promises
and carrying out 'dharnas' (agitations) and has been a complete failure as far as implementation of policies and handling administration was concerned. "He is now against Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi. Earlier, he was against the Lieutenant Governor. And to add to that, he is always accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi for everything," she said. The BJP leader also dubbed the recent Lokpal Bill passed by the Delhi Government as 'Dhokapal.' "The Lokpal that Arvind Kejriwal has brought is 'Dhokapal'. You can call it 'Jokepal' as well as 'Thopepal'," she said. The Delhi Chief Minister has been facing criticism from the opposition parties over the Jan Lokpal Bill that was passed on Friday. passed by the Delhi Assembly as 'mahajokepal', saying it lacks transparency and seems more of a government bill with the power in the hands of the politicians. Activists of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) had also protested against the Jan Lokpal Bill and termed it a "Jokepal" and "Makhaulpal". They dubbed Kejriwal
as "corrupt", while accusing him of cheating the people of Delhi. The Bill provides for an ombudsman with powers to act against any government functionary, including those at the Centre, in the national capital. pecially when there is an atmosphere of tension prevailing between both the nations, we hope that the ceasefire would be obeyed, and the dialogue process gets started again," he added. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier met his Pakistani counterpart briefly in Paris on November 30. Both leaders warmly held hands before sitting down for a chat amidst frosty ties between the
two neighbouring nations. The duo had earlier met in Russian city of Ufa and agreed that their National Security Advisors would meet. Pakistan has formally invited External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to attend the 'Heart of Asia' Conference to be held in Islamabad on December 8. New Delhi, Dec.5: Welcoming the assertion made by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat over the Ram Mandir issue, the Shiv Sena on Saturday said that the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will increase by many folds as soon as he takes the responsibility of its construction into his own hands. The Shiv Sena in its mouthpiece Saamna, said that the issue of Ram Mandir being raised by Bhagwat has to be answered only by the ruling dispensation at the Centre- the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). "The BJP is at power at the Centre. The government is functioning keeping aside the issue of Common Civil Code, Ram Mandir, Article 370 etc. Meanwhile, the Ram Temple issue raised by Mohan Bhagwat has to be answered only by the BJP," said the editorial. "We welcome the role played by the RSS in this context. What we would like to advise them is to announce a date and start the construction work," the editorial added. The editorial also alleged that those demanding the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya are today being targeted and treated like the terrorist Ajmal Kasab. "We believe that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has the will and the guts to start the construction of Ram Mandir. His popularity will increase by many folds as soon as he takes over this responsibility," the editorial said. The editorial also recalled the statement made by BJP president Amit
Shah where he had said that they would construct the Ram Mandir when they would have 380 MPs. "The issue of Ram Mandir now cannot be delayed. We would have to resolve it as soon as possible," it added. Expressing hope that the proposed Ram Mandir will be built at Ayodhya in his lifetime, Bhagwat had earlier said it needs a careful planning. "The temple will be built within my lifetime. May be, we will see it with our own eyes. None can say when and how the temple will be constructed, but we need to be prepared and ready," Bhagwat said while addressing a programme in Kolkata to pay tributes to brothers Ram Kothari and Sharad Kothari who were killed in police firing while performing the kar seva at Ayodhya in 1990. "We need to plan it carefully. A good mix of 'josh' (passion) and 'hosh' (sanity) is needed to complete the work which Ram and Sharad had initiated," he added. However, the Shiv Sena had earlier warned the RSS to not politicize the issue and to announce the date of the construction of the temple right away. "We also want that the Ram Mandir should be constructed but they should give a definite timeframe for the same. The elections in Uttar Pradesh are approaching. If the Ram Mandir is made a political issue then the people won't forgive us. The people should not be deceived on this matter," Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut had said. (ANI)

Fake currency and human trafficking: The deadly cocktail from Pakistan Islamabad, Dec 5: A racket involving a deadly cocktail of human trafficking and fake Indian currency has been busted in Bangladesh and yet again those in custody are from Pakistan. The amount in question was fake Indian currency to the tune of Rs 70 lakh. Abdullah Selim, Jahangir, Abdul Khaleq, Kamrul Islam, Abu Sufian and Rasel were the ones to be held in Dhaka. Investigations showed that these men were in possession of Rs 70 lakh fake Indian currency, 9,125 US dollars, 21 Pakistani passports, seven Bangladeshi passports and a bunch of seals of different high officials. The seals according to investigations were being used for passing papers in a bid to further the human trafficking racket. Investigations would show that the notes and seals were prepared in Pakistan and then be brought down to Bangladesh. From Bangladesh, the fake notes
would be pumped into India. Various probes conducted in India would show that the fake notes would land up at Malda in West Bengal and then circulated to different parts of the country. The Bangladesh police say that the notes would be sold to an Indian gang. The price fixed was Rs 40 thousand for 1 lakh fake Indian currency. The money in turn would be circulated out of Malda. In many cases these fake notes were used to trade in cattle. The cattle traders have been the most hit as most of the notes that were given to them while purchasing cattle would be fake. The magnitude of this racket is immense. This gang from Pakistan not only deals in fake currency, but also runs a major human trafficking racket. The Bangladesh police have in the past two years arrested 1,700 persons for circulating fake currency. (Agencies)
DPM Mainali says India will lift border blockade soon Kathmandu, Dec 5: Deputy Prime Minister CP Mainali has argued that India would be compelled to lift the border blockade imposed on Nepal soon. Speaking at an interaction programme in Rupandehi on Saturday, DPM Mainali expressed his confidence on the same as various international communities and its own fellow countrymen were criticising this very act and creating pressure to undo the embargo. The act of imposing unofficial border blockade on its
neighbor country had tarnished image of India in international arena, according to DPM Mainali. Furthermore, Mainali shared that the government was doing necessary homework to expand Nepal's trade with other foreign countries, which was solely dependent on India. The DPM, also General-Secretary of CPN (ML), compared India imposed border blockade to a nation sharing its three sides' border as an act of smothering. (Agencies)
The HRCSL report was based on expert medical evidence that students were beaten using batons
and other sharp objects even as they were trying to flee. The police had
launched water canon and teargas in addition to a brutal baton charge that
was captured on television. The report noted that the arrest of 39 students also may have been illegal as there was no evidence to suggest that due process had been followed. However, the commission made no pronouncement on the arrest. The police chief was ordered by the HRCSL to ensure new training procedures and guidelines in crowd control and a report to be filed to the commission by March 1.The commission noted that there was a lack of professionalism in the police and ordered the
IGP to conduct an internal investigation to identify officers who gave orders to assault students as well as those who carried out those orders and take strict disciplinary action against them.It was the first ruling against the police by HRCSL specifically referring to international humanitarian law, official sources said. The decision is the first highprofile case by the commission since it was constituted as a fully independent body following the election of President Maithripala Sirisena earlier this year. China's Xi Jinping commits to 'win-win' co-operation with Africa Beijing, Dec 5:President Xi Jinping promised Beijing would embrace a new era of "win-win" co-operation with Africa as he pledged $60bn in support to the world's least developed continent. Mr Xi was addressing African leaders at a triennial China-Africa summit at a time when many African governments are grappling with tough economic challenges in the face of a Chinese slowdown and the fall in commodity prices.China's demand for Africa's resources such as oil, iron ore and copper over the past decade has been a crucial driver of the continent's growth. But analysts forecast that Chinese imports from Africa could fall as much as 40 per cent in value this year, causing Africa's trade deficit with the country to widen sharply. The result is that Sino-Africa relations are entering a politically sensitive period. Beijing has been accused of exploiting
Africa's mineral wealth without doing enough to support the creation of local jobs and industries. At the same time, Africa has grown more reliant on cheap goods made in China. In an effort to soothe those concerns, Mr Xi unveiled a three-year, 10-point plan that he said would address three bottlenecks holding back Africa's development. This included inadequate infrastructure, a lack of professional and skilled personnel, and a shortage of funding. The $60bn in financial support would include $35bn in preferential loans and export credit lines, $5bn in grants, $15bn to two China-Africa funds and $5bn in loans to smaller companies. "We will work with Africa to embrace a new era of win-win co-operation and common development. With this in mind I propose the new type of partnership be upgraded to a comprehensive, strategic and co-operative partnership," Mr Xi said. "We will

"Beijing is dealing with both domestic and international scrutiny more than ever before as they

US prepares to amend Myanmar sanctions to smooth trade through port owned by junta crony Washington, Dec 5: The United States is preparing to amend sanctions on Myanmar after banks complained they can't finance trade that goes through the nation's main port terminal because it is run by a blacklisted business tycoon.State Department officials have been sounding out Congress about remedial policies, which an administration official said could take effect as early as next week. The administration is keen to promote economic growth with the country also known as Burma, which recently held landmark elections, but its fix could draw criticism from U.S. lawmakers and human rights groups. It would mean giving the green light to banks to process transactions related to trade that passes through a container port terminal in the main city of Yangon that is run by Steven Law, the son of a deceased heroin kingpin. one of Myanmar's largest conglomerates, Asia World, that flourished under the former ruling junta. Two associations representing many of the world's largest commercial banks, The Clearing House and The Bankers Association for Finance and Trade, have requested a sanctions workaround to Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control. In a July letter they warned that trade with Myanmar could otherwise be impacted badly. But the request comes at a sensitive time.Myanmar is in the throes of a historic transition to a civilian-led government after five decades of military domination. The Nov. 8 elections passed off smoothly, with the opposition party of Aung San Suu Kyi, who spent 15 years under house arrest during the junta's rule, thrashing the current pro-military ruling party. want to be seen as giving up its leverage, at least until then."Loosening a restriction on business persons who were listed by the U.S. government because of their involvement in massive criminal enterprises and support for an abusive military junta isn't a well-tailored idea for improving Burma's economy," said John Sifton, Asia advocacy director for Human Rights Watch. "These sorts of business people are precisely the sorts of people who are responsible for the poor state of Burma's economy in the first place."Asia World was set up in 1992 by Law's father, the late Lo Hsing Han, who was described by Treasury as one of the world's key heroin traffickers. The father and son were put on the Treasury's Specially Designated Nationals, or SDN list, in 2008. Dozens of senior officials, businessmen and companies linked to the junta remain on the list, and are barred from holding as-
sets in the U.S. financial system or doing business with U.S. companies.Asia World was awarded contracts to run ports, build highways and oversee airport operations during the junta's rule, and today its subsidiary, Asia World Port Management Co. Ltd, provides the most efficient way of getting goods into Myanmar by sea, handling about 60 percent of the container trade that comes in via Yangon. There are alternatives. At least two other deep water ports in or near Yangon could be used for U.S.-Myanmar trade, including a terminal operated by Hong Kong-based Hutchison Port Holdings Ltd., 15 miles (25 kilometers) south of the city, but the Asia World facility is reported to be better located and equipped. It's hard to gauge what impact the difficulties of the banks complying with sanctions has had on trade. Six injured in bomb attack on a Hindu gathering in Bangladesh
At least six people were injured, with three in a critical condition, after a series of bomb blasts on Saturday at a Hindu religious
Dhaka, Dec 5 : At least six people were injured, with three in a critical condition, after a series of bomb blasts on Saturday at a Hindu religious gathering in northern Bangladesh, a police official said. The attack follows the shooting and wounding of an Italian doctor working in the same region last month, and the earlier murders of an Italian and a Japanese citizen in separate attacks claimed by Islamic State. The latest incident occurred in Dinajpur district, 415 km (260 miles) north of the capital Dhaka when a series of bombs exploded as hundreds of devotees attended a religious cer-
emony known as "Rushmela", Abdul Mazid, the officer incharge of Kahalur police station, told media. The attack came after recent threats to the temple's priest, urging him not to organise any religious gatherings, Mazid said.Five people had been detained for interrogation, he said. Bomb attacks on Hindu religious gatherings are rare in Muslim-majority Bangladesh. The country has suffered a rising tide of Islamist violence over the past year. Four online critics of religious militancy have been hacked to death, among them a U.S. citizen of Bangladesh origin. (Agencies)
Students join awareness drive against gender-based violence Kathmandu, Dec, 5: Children from various schools and colleges on Friday staged various programmes such as drama, dance and poem recitation to spread awareness against gend e r - b a s e d violence.Through the programme, they portrayed the forms of domestic, sexual, physical and mental violence women face both in the public and private sphere of their lives. "We live in a patriarchal society which discriminates against women and causes violence against them. It is important to spread awareness on violence against women and spread a message to stop it," said Pema Lama of Rato Bangala School. The programme was organised by Zonta Nepal to mark the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based
Violence campaign. The campaign runs through November 25-December 10 every year.At the programme, Zonta Nepal President Pramila Acharya Rijal spoke on the importance of breaking the silence against gender-based violence. Rijal said the event was aimed at advocating for making education safe from gender-based violence for all, with a particular focus on young women.Madhu Prasad Regmi, secretary at the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare, said collective effort from the government, civil society and development partners was necessary to eliminate it. "The government has enacted laws against domestic violence and workplace sexual harassment. However, we feel that the law alone is not enough," Regmi said. (Agencies)
PM says anti-government preaching will not long last
China's most-wanted woman official deported Beijing, Dec 5 :One of China's most-wanted fugitives suspected of bribery was brought home today from the US where she had fled to in 2002, as the country's anti-graft authority called on other offenders hiding abroad to give themselves up.Huang Yurong, 64, former party chief of Henan Provincial Highway Administration, surrendered herself to the police and returned voluntarily after being persuaded by Chinese authorities, Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Commission for Discipline Inspection
(CCDI) said.Law enforcement officials from China and the US collaborated on the investigation in Huang's case starting from the end of 2014, it said in a statement.China launched a "Sky Net" campaign in April to bring back 100 suspects accused of economic offences who fled to abroad. After years on the run, Huang believes that her decision to return to China was right, promising to cooperate with the judicial departments in her case, said the statement. The anti-graft authority urged fugitives
abroad to give themselves up to the police as soon as possible, vowing a strong resolve to fight against corruption in the next year.CCDI also said a total of 138,867 officials had been punished for violating austerity rules since late 2012.The CPC central leadership headed by Chinese President Xi Jinping launched a frugality campaign in December 2012, adopting an "eight-point rules" to improve the Party's and government officials' work style.Seven provincial and ministerial level officials were among the
punished in 104,934 violation cases in the past three years, about a fifth of which involved private use of vehicles for public services, the CCDI said. A total of 71,748 violators in 53,085 cases were disciplined in 2014. (Agencies)

Fighting for India's Women-Part II Wait is finally over GAIL commissions Stage-1 of Assam Gas Cracker Project Commissioned The long waited Assam Gas Cracker Project was finally partially commissioned by GAIL, thus bringing in some amount of relief to a large class of people. The first phase of long-delayed Rs 9,285-crore Assam Gas Cracker project, the first petrochemical project in the Northeast, has been commissioned. As expected by the locals of Assam, the BCPL would surely be helpful in increasing the revenue sector of entire Northeast India and will also improve the problem of unemployment to a great extend. The cracker, polypropylene (PP) unit, gas processing unit and all utilities have been commissioned. It is worth mentioning here that GAIL India, is the majority stake holder in Brahmaputra Crackers and Polymers Ltd (BCPL) that is building the project. The entire project is developed at a cost of Rs9.28bn ($1.38bn), of which GAIL India owns a 70% stake. The remaining amount is equally owned by Oil India, Numaligarh Refineries and the Assam Government. The plant has already started producing ethylene, which will form feedstock for manufacturing polymers that are basic building blocks of plastics, he said. LLDPE/ HDPE unit will be made operational after receipt of ethylene from the cracker plant. The entire plant will be commission in next two weeks time. The then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on April 9, 2007 had laid the foundation stone of the project at Lepetkata, 15 km from Dibrugarh. It was at that time said that the project will take 60 months to complete, i.e. by April 2012. But the target declines were delayed - first to December 2013, than to January 2014 and to June 2015. The project is finally being commissioned now. The delay resulted in the project cost going up. From an initial Rs 5,460 crore it was revised to Rs 9,285 crore. Apart from changes in design, escalating costs of steel, cement and other construction materials were cited as the main factors responsible for the hike. GAIL holds 70 per cent interest in BCPL while the remaining 10 per cent is equally split between Oil India Ltd, Numaligarh Refineries Ltd and the Assam government. The Centre has approved a capital subsidy of Rs 2,136 crore and a feedstock subsidy of Rs 908.91 crore for a 15 year period for the project with an exemption of excise and income tax for 10 years. GAIL and BCPL have already signed a deal for marketing petrochemical products sold at the plant. The petrochemical project will produce various ranges of polymers produced at the plant find applications in sectors such as packaging film, roto, injection, raffia and blow moulding. Once fully operational this 1st ever petrochemical project in Northeast at Rs 10,000 crore will produce 2,80,000 MT of feedstock for downstream industries. The project came as a part of the historic Assam Accord signed on August 15, 1985 with a view to bring socioeconomic development of the region. It was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on April 18, 2006. Subsequently a joint venture company, BCPL was incorporated on January 8, 2007. The feedstock for the project will be natural gas and naphtha. OIL and ONGC will supply natural gas and naphtha shall be supplied by NRL.
Case of sheer negligence Will the sorrows of common people come to an end? A patient approaching a doctor expects medical treatment with all the knowledge and skill that the doctor possesses to bring relief to his medical problem. The relationship takes the shape of a contract retaining the essential elements of tort. A doctor owes certain duties to his patient and a breach of any of these duties gives a cause of action for negligence against the doctor. The doctor has a duty to obtain prior informed consent from the patient before carrying out diagnostic tests and therapeutic management. In Assam 15 person lost their sight after botched surgeries. Though the Assam government suspended a senior doctor and a nurse of the MMC hospital in Guwahati after five patients reportedly lost their eyesight following cataract surgeries. And according to the state health minister Nazrul Islam, the five patients have been shifted to a private eye hospital in the city for better treatment. Also an inquiry has been ordered to probe the incident. MMC Hospital, which is part of the Guwahati Medical College Hospital, five of them were found to have lost their eyesight when they went back to the hospital for a routine check-up three days later. All the five are elderly persons and one of them is a woman. Whereas fifteen patients had to be admitted at Chandigarh's Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) as they suffered eye infection after cataract removal surgery at the Ambala cantonment's congested Mahesh Nagar locality on 24 November. As a result, case under sections 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life) of the Indian Penal Code was registered at Mahesh Nagar police station. The accused has not been arrested yet Also in the year 2014 At least 60 persons have lost their eyesight after an operation at an eye camp organised by an NGO in Gurdaspur district, civil and medical authorities While 16 persons belonged to villages of Amritsar the rest were from Gurdaspur district. All of them were admitted in city ENT hospitals of Amritsar and Gursdaspur. The affected patients were above the age of 60 with poor economical condition. This incident also came barely a month after the faulty sterilisation surgeries at a government-organised family planning camp in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh, in which at least 11 women died and 34 were reported critical. Repeated evidence of negligence and apathy. These helpless people, who thought they had a ray of hope at these camps, lost their vision because they could not afford anything better than a government organised free eye surgery camp. It can be said that for the personal gain, health officers, doctors and phrama company representatives blinded the poor patients and in some previous cases it even led to death.
Zigor Aldama and Miguel Candela Discrimination From the Womb Women in India are discriminated against even before birth. Technology to determine the sex of a fetus has now made it possible for people to make a living in rural areas by taking an ultrasound machine from house to house, looking for pregnant women. If they discover that it is a girl being developed in the womb, many women are forced to undergo an abortion. So while the world averages 106 boys born for every 100 women, in India that number is 112. It is estimated that in the last three decades 12 million girls haven't been born due to the practice of feticide. Fortunately for Vanita, a 21-year-old woman living more than 700 miles south of Badausa, in the town of Anantapur, her parents didn't know she was a girl until she was born. Now she's the eldest of five siblings and a good example of the drama Indian women experience. She suffers triple discrimination: for her physical disability, for belonging to a tribal minority, and for being a woman. But her nightmare didn't start until she was 15 years old. "It was when my mother died. She had had an accident on an auto-rickshaw [a motorized tricycle used as a taxi], and they could not save her," she recalls sobbing. "My father only took three months to marry a sister of my mother who abused me and with whom he already maintained a secret relationship. Then, everything changed. My father told me I had to leave school and start working, so I went on as a day laborer, where I was paid 100 rupees ($1.50) per day. But because I didn't approve of his relationship with my aunt, she decided to get me out of the way by marrying me to another uncle, much older than me."
Indian law allows such marriages between relatives, but Vanita refused. To force her into it, her stepmother found a too common solution: She asked Vanita's suitor to rape her so she could not reject the marriage after losing her virginity. "Premeditated rape is one of the most common formulas, even with children under 12, to force a girl to marry a particular man or break a relationship kept for love against the parents' wishes," says Sampat Pal. But Vanita discovered the plot and decided to preserve her dignity. "I crushed the crystal bracelets I usually wear and drank the powder to kill myself," she says. Doctors managed to save her life, but ever since then her family has turned their back on her. "They've now found another suitor. He's already married, but as he has no children he may marry again. I don't like him. He's fat and old. But I
imposes a heavy social burden. "I'll end up marrying whomever they choose for me," she laments. Although most marriages in rural India have nothing to do with the spouses' feelings, Sampat Pal is against divorce. "It's a way to turn women into a commodity. Men need to understand that women are not like sandals, that you can change whenever you feel like it," she asserts. Beside her, Sayah Bana, a 22-yearold Muslim woman, nods. Two years ago she was repudiated by her husband, a school teacher who physically and psychologically abused her and who decided to marry again, illegally, with another woman. "He told me to return to my parents' house with our two children," Bana recalls. "I went to the police to report him for bigamy, but everyone ignored me, so a few months ago I decided to join the Gulabi Gang to assert our rights." Despite the beatings her husband gave her, especially when he was drunk, she
Her story is shared by thousands of women, and not always with such a happy ending. In fact, a survey conducted three years ago among 370 specialists in gender issues revealed that India is the worst country in the G20 to be a woman. Statistics show why: 56,000 women die every year giving birth, their literacy rate of 55 percent is much lower than the 77 percent of their male compatriots, on average they earn 62 percent of a man's wage, and 57 percent of teenagers - 52 percent in the case of girls - consider it acceptable to beat their wife. know it'll be difficult to find someone who will accept me with my disability." As a teenager, Vanita suffered an episode of brain fever that caused paralysis in her right hand and left leg. It is not very obvious, and hardly affects her mobility, but in rural India it
doesn't want to divorce. Bana demands that he leave his second wife so that they can continue living as a family. "We didn't make any progress with the case until we got the sticks out and we stood in front of the police station," she says. "Now we will see what the judge de-
Gulabi gang members train with their 7 foot bamboo sticks which they use to defend themselves against men. Source: Miguel Candela cides." Unfortunately, justice can be the biggest enemy for Indian women. Suseelamma Nirugutta knows this only too well. She became a widow five days after giving birth to her second daughter, and had no way of earning an income. In an example of excessive naivety, she accepted the offer of a woman who promised her a decent job in the capital, Delhi, where she went with her youngest daughter, only eighteen months. "They took us to a house where I worked as a maid and in which I was offered alcohol and meat. I am a vegetarian and I never drink, so I declined." But one day she was forced to eat and drink it, and she felt dizzy for three days. "They told me they would take me to hospital, but I ended up in a salon where I got a makeover and sexy clothes. There they threatened with killing me and my daughter if I didn't do what they told me.". Nirugutta fell off the cliff of prostitution. But not for long. "They hid about 25 girls in a secret room during a raid. It was extremely hot and we could barely breathe, so a girl began to scream and the police found us." In any other country, her rescue would have been a cause for celebration, but not in India. In fact, Nirugutta ended up in prison, where she was locked up for
three years after the "madam" of the brothel accused her of trafficking women. Later she was admitted with her daughter in a special correctional center, where she met dozens of trafficked women jailed like her. They stayed until she was able to prove her innocence and was released. "But I couldn't return to Chinapalli - the village of the state of Andhra Pradesh where she comes from - because I had no money, so I asked a policeman to help me find a job to save for a few months and return with some money so no one would suspect anything. My family thought I was dead," she recalls. Her story is shared by thousands of women, and not always with such a happy ending. In fact, a survey conducted three years ago among 370 specialists in gender issues revealed that India is the worst country in the G20 to be a woman. Statistics show why: 56,000 women die every year giving birth, their literacy rate of 55 percent is much lower than the 77 percent of their male compatriots, on average they earn 62 percent of a man's wage, and 57 percent of teenagers 52 percent in the case of girls - consider it acceptable to beat their wife. If that wasn't enough, their lack of access to
political power is clear in the Parliament, where only 11 percent of MPs are women. Despite the black future drawn by the numbers, Sampat Pal is optimistic and says that the situation is changing. "Especially since Jyoti Singh was raped in Delhi. Her case has been a turning point in the perception of gender violence in society," she says. She's talking about the young medical student who, on the night of December 16, 2012, boarded a private bus in Delhi to return home with a friend after seeing a movie at the cinema. The occupants of the vehicle, friends of the driver who had been drinking and had taken the bus for a joyride, decided then to beat her male companion and rape her. The men also brutalized the victim with a steel rod. They abandoned Jyoti and her friend in a ditch and Jyoti died after two weeks of excruciating agony in a hospital in Singapore. "The brutality of the case, and the fact it took place in the capital itself, have made many people aware of the seriousness of the situation. Therefore, we believe that her death was not in vain, and that it may have served as a catalyst for Indian women to get the respect they deserve," Reddy concurs. "However, we are still far from achieving that." The End
Prime - Minister's Promise and Price - Hike Bangladeshi nationals, the BJP led NDA appears to be spreading the red carpet for these people. Asif all these negative phenomena are not enough, the latest addition is the increase in price of certain life-saving medicines if the news-paper reports are anything to go by. Sri Modi after taking over as the Prime-minister, we never anticipated that the prices would soar up so high. The matter of price-hike in medicines along with other essential commodities has come to such a pass that the poor people suffering from heart, kidney, cancer and other diseases like diabetes, thyroid etc. have found no other way but to surrender themselves to the destiny. Through this column of your esteemed daily, we appeal to the power that be to take appropriate steps to bring down the prices to a reasonable level. Further, we look forward to the BJP led NDA to do justice to the poor by exempting life saving medicines from the clutches of Price-hike. Sir, During his fire and brimstone speech before Lok Sabha election almost in each and every meeting addressed by Narendra Modi, he never forgot to project the rosy picture that 'Achche - Din' is coming and that very soon Assam would be a Bangladesh - free state asking the illegal migrants to pack up to leave Assam. But much water has since flowed beneath the Saraighat bridge and nothing came out the way it had been committed. Ordinary, people are at their wit's end unable to bear the brunt of the sky - rocketing prices of the essential commodities. Far from taking concrete steps on

Improper facilities of network in Golaghat Sir, I would like to draw the attention of concerned authorities towards the improper facilities of cellular network in our area. Nowadays we are unable to use BSNL network due to its improper network

Career in Archaeology Introduction The trend of all knowledge at the present is to specialize, but archaeology has in it all the qualities that call for the wide view of the human race, of its growth from the savage to the civilized, which is seen in all stages of social and religious development. - Margaret Murray Archaeology is an interdisciplinary activity that revolves around the investigation of material development made by earlier human societies. The objective of this discipline is to study past human cultures by identification, survey, and excavation of historical sites. These sites yield remains of earlier cultures in the form of relics (such as pottery, weapons, jewellery, articles of daily use, plant, animal, and human remains and so on) and architecture. Once artefacts and monuments are unearthed they are properly analysed, documented, and preserved by archaeologists for future reference. Even an insignificant looking article like a piece of broken pottery or a human bone tells a lot of things to a seasoned archaeologist. The finding made during various archaeological investigations often adds new dimensions to already known facts of the past. Recovery and analysis of remains obtained from excavation sites is the primary duty of all archaeologists irrespective of their field of specialization. Apart from the traditional process of collecting and managing material evidence of the past, archaeologists also employ modern investigative
techniques. The state-ofthe-art research techniques utilized by modern day archaeologists are, genetic study, radiocarbon dating, thermography, satellite imaging, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and so on. As a multidisciplinary activity, archaeology greatly draws upon a vast array of subjects such as anthropology, art history, chemistry, classical literature, ethnology, geology, history, information technology, linguistics, palaeontology, physics, statistics, and so on. All in all a career in archaeology is challenging, stimulating, and fulfilling. Step-by-Step Most of the universities in India that have a department of archaeology offer this subject at the postgraduation level and beyond it. In this regard, the first step towards becoming a successful archaeologist is to obtain a graduate degree. This could be in any discipline. However, it is preferable to have a bachelor's degree in history, sociology, or anthropology for a better understanding of the concepts of archaeology. Further, it is advisable to check with the concerned university what all bachelor's degrees are acceptable for taking up a postgraduate course in archaeology. However, universities like the Maharaj Sayajirao University of Baroda, offers a three years bachelor's degree in Indian History, Culture and Archaeology. Similarly, the Banaras Hindu University, offers two undergraduate courses in this field: a three years honours program in Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology and a three years vocational
program in Museology and Archaeology. The Institute of Archaeology under the aegis of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), New Delhi, conducts a two year Post Graduate Diploma in Archaeology. The eligibility of entry to this program includes a master's degree in Ancient or Medieval Indian History, Anthropology, or Archaeology form a recognized university. Students holding a master's degree in classical languages or geology can also apply for this program. The practical test in itself comprises of the following sections: Surveying, Drawing, Photography, Modelling, Exploration & Excavation, Chemical Conservation, Computer Application, Viva-voce, General observations, Tutorials, and a Dissertation. After completing the post graduation level, candidates can opt for higher studies. They can either go for a doctorate degree or take up lectureship in a university after qualifying the norms laid down by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in this regard. From the master's level onwards, candidates can look for suitable career opportunities either in the teaching line or as an archaeologist employed with the ASI at the central or at the state level. Start Early To take up a successful profession in archaeology it is not necessary but advisable to start as early as possible. The most important steps in this direction are to imbibe the spirit of cultural and art appreciation in the minds of young ones. This impetus must come both from the school as well as from the home front. As
the psyche of a young learner absorbs more and more information about the grandeur of our country's history, they are automatically attracted towards this exciting profession. Further, interest towards this occupation can be ignited by frequent visits to museums, cultural centres, historical monuments, and even excavation sites. Gathering information from books and periodicals on topics such as history, art history, and ancient civilizations helps a lot in this regard. Keeping track of developments and new findings in the realm of archaeology is another way of getting a head start for becoming a future archaeologist. What would it Cost Me? It does not cost too much to purse your studies in this field. As far as the cost of completing, a bachelor's or a postgraduate degree goes the cost is similar to other arts and social science subjects. Funding/Scholarship Students who succeed to get admission into the two year Post Graduate Diploma program in Archaeology run by the ASI get a stipend of Rs.1,500 each. Post graduate students of archaeology who get through the National Eligibility Test (NET) or the Junior Research Fellow (JRF)Lectureship examination conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) are eligible to take doctorate studies in the capacity of a junior research fellow. The monthly remuneration of JRFs is Rs.8,000 per month. Apart from the aforementioned, universities generally extend merit scholarships and stipends to students on the basis of their
performance at pre as well as post graduate levels. Some educational institutions also have government and privately funded fellowships for their students, the eligibility for which varies from institute to institute. Job Prospect The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is the main recruiter of archaeologists in our country both at the centre and the state levels. Qualified students can apply for appropriate positions in the ASI by clearing examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) or by the State Public Service Commissions (SPSC). Students who have earned a post graduate degree in archaeology can apply for lectureship in various universities across the country. In this regard, they have to appear for the National Eligibility Test (NET) or the Junior Research Fellow (JRF)-Lectureship examination conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Candidates who succeed to qualify the JRF examination have the option to pursue a doctorate degree in the capacity of a paid research fellowship. For taking up a lectureship position within a particular state, candidates need to clear the State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) of that state. Archaeologists also have the option to take up a job in government or privately owned museums for the safe upkeep and management of museum artefacts. Since most of the job openings are in government or government run agencies, therefore the career of an archaeologist is secure. Archaeologists draw all the benefits of a normal govern-
ment employee as per their experience and official designation. Pay Packet Archaeology students start earning as soon as they qualify the JRF examination and fulfil all the eligibility criteria thereof. A JRF gets an assistance of Rs. 8,000 per month for a period of two years. Emoluments are increased once their position is elevated to that of a Senior Research Fellow (SRF). The pay packet of lecturers is around Rs. 20,000 per month whereas professors earn even higher than this. After joining the ASI, the basic pay package of an assistant archaeologist is in a range between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 15,000 per month approximately. Archaeologists who have a doctorate degree tend to get better positions in the job hierarchy. The monthly salary of the director general of ASI is in somewhere around Rs. 30,000 per month. Different roles, different names Archaeology in itself is a vast field and different roles are based on the area of specialization. The major branches of study in archaeology include: 1. Archaeobotany - Study of plant remains to ascertain agricultural practices of that time, food habits of the
people, and climatic conditions thereof. 2. Archaeometry - Is the application of analytical engineering principles and processes to archaeology. 3. Archaeozoology Branch of archaeology that looks into the remains of animals and related aspects such as their health, domestication, hunting practices, and so on. 4. Battlefield Archaeology - Intensive archaeological exploration of well known battlefields. 5. Environmental Archaeology - Studies the impact of environment on past societies and vice versa. 6. Ethno Archaeology Application of modern day ethnological or anthropological data on past societies to gain an insight into them. 7. Experimental Archaeology - Replication of obsolete objects and processes in order to get a better understanding of their working. 8. Geoarchaeology - The focus of this field is towards the inspection of soil and rock samples to determine changes in geological and environmental conditions. 9. Marine Archaeology Also known as underwater archaeology. Study dedicated to probe the remains
of ships along with the study of cultures that developed along the coastline. 10. Palaeontology - This branch deals with the study of life forms that existed on earth before the advent of the modern man. 11. Prehistoric Archaeology - Archaeologists whose main interest is to examine human traditions that belong to the pre-recorded or prehistoric era. 12. Urban Archaeology Branch that is specifically dedicated to the study of urban centres or cities. Other than, the aforementioned branches of study an archaeologist can specialise in the study of a specific historic period (Biblical, Classical, Medieval archaeology, and so on) or geographical location such as Egyptology (study of Egyptian civilizations), Sinology (study of Chinese history), and so on. They can also gain expertise in a particular area of research such as battlefields, underwater archaeology, geology, culture, flora, and fauna. Tips for getting Hired 1. One needs to have a hardy body and mind especially to bag this profile. 2. Good communication skills here also come handy to edge past one's fellow competitors.

Call drops issue soon to be resolved by Vodafone Kolkata, Dec 5: Vodafone India, facing flak over frequent call drops on its network, has invested Rs 500 crore in the first eight months of the current financial year to improve its services in Delhi and the national capital region but expressed reservations on the order to compensate users for dropped calls. The company's Managing Director and CEO, Sunil Sood, said they were working on a war footing to improve services. "We have actually set up a war room in Delhi…We extended our budget; between April and end of November we have invested above Rs. 500 crore to modernise our networks and there has been a significant improvement," he said. Asked if the company will take a legal recourse on telecom
regulator's order mandating that telecom companies to compensate users for dropped calls, Mr Sood said: "We would like to have a dialogue with the government over compensation plans. All stakeholders need to work together to fix problem rather that look at things like compensation. Nowhere in the world do we have such rules." According to a survey by Telecom Enforcement, Resource and Monitoring (TERM) cell which operates under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) call drop on Vodafone's network in Delhi was in the range of 0.3-2.97 in October, an improvement from 1.536.63 in August. Telecom regulator TRAI has set a benchmark of 2 per cent. "The improvement is also due to the addition
VW case now to be looked into by IIT experts
New Delhi, Dec 5: The road transport ministry will set up a committee of experts from four IITs to look into Volkswagen's emission case. "We will be forming a committee of IIT experts in the next couple of days. The committee will be tasked to analyze and understand the VW issue and submit the findings to the ministry. We don't want to take a decision in haste," road transport minister Nitin Gadkari said. Gadkari said the panel of experts on vehicle emission issues will submit its report within a month or two. "Any decision will be taken after that," he
added. Sources said the ministry will hold a meeting with the experts next week. Earlier, heavy industries minister Anant Geete had said that they have re ferred the case to Gadkari's ministry and it's up to the transport ministry to take a call on penalty and ban on sale of VW's diesel vehicles. Recently, Gadkari also said that his ministry will soon come out with an integrated policy to scrap commercial vehicles that are over 10-years old to check rising pollution, though there is no immediate plan to ban trucks and buses above 15 years. The customer's prepaid account will then get recharged with the favourite amount each time he/she makes a missed call. The customer can also add, through an SMS, mobile numbers of family members and friends and authorize them to recharge their mobiles through missed calls by debiting the customer's own account. Separate favourite recharge amounts can be set for the additional members. "HDFC Bank customers who are registered for SMS Banking can activate this service by sending an SMS and will be activated for missed call recharge for a default amount, say Rs 50. If a customer wishes to set any favourite amount (other than Rs 50), it can be done by sending an SMS," he said. Payments bank licencee Paytm has claimed a customer base of 10 crore. A large chunk of this uses the digital wallet for re-
charging mobile phones and DTH services. Although HDFC Bank's missed call service is restricted to its customer base, it is a sizeable number going by the bank's 2.41 crore debit card base. Chugh pointed out that the missed call service is ideal for 750 million feature phones which constitute 75% of handsets in India. Over 85% of mobile connections are prepaid and recharges are for values as low as Rs 10. On growing popularity of 'missed call' services, Vodafone (East) head Anand Sahai said, "Today, a lot of options like chequebook delivery, app download, voting, bank balance check and even DTH recharge happens via missed calls." Industry insiders say that 45% of calls are unanswered, including those for missed call services. The Trai chairman on Thursday, too, acknowledged this phenomenon and termed India as the 'missed-call capital' of the world. (Agencies)

Gates finds India's foundation for financial enclosure in place New Delhi, Dec 5: Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates said India has put in place the foundation for a strong financial inclusion programme, which will lower costs and result in widespread innovation. Pointing to the experience in Kenya where mobilebased financial transactions add up to nearly half the GDP, Gates said India could reach that level in two to three years.

$2.1bn to be raised by Uber at $62.5bn valuation Bengaluru, Dec 5: Uber is looking to raise as much as $2.1billion in a financing round that would value the car-booking company at $62.5 billion, said people familiar with the matter. Uber has filed paperwork in Delaware detailing the fundraising plans, said the people, who asked not to be named because the plans are private. The new funding shows Uber is accelerating its race to expand globally and branch into services beyond picking up and dropping off riders. The company has tested food and package delivery in some cities, and is working on new technology, such as self-driving cars. Uber is spending aggressively to expand throughout Asia, particularly in China, where the company expects to spend $1billion, according to a June letter to investors from chief executive officer Travis Kalanick. As part of the current financing
round, Uber has closed investments from Tiger Global Management and T Rowe Price, and it's also seeking strategic investors with shared business interests, the people said. Uber, Tiger Global, and T Rowe Price declined to comment. One strategic investor, Microsoft, kicked in about $100 million as part of a previous round for the San Francisco ride-hailing company, people with knowledge of the matter said in July. Tiger Global
backs some of Uber's main competitors outside of the US, including China's Didi Kuaidi, India's Ola, and Singapore's GrabTaxi. Didi Kuaidi raised about $3 billion in a round this year, people familiar with the matter had said. The three Asian companies, along with Lyft in the US, are teaming up to form a global alliance that will make their apps cross-compatible for travellers, they said in a statement on Thursday. Lyft, Uber's biggest US ri-
val, is currently seeking to raise $500 million, according to fundraising documents obtained by Bloomberg last month. The materials also contain details about the company's finances that suggest it's spending aggressively to continue growing. The company lost $127 million in the first half of 2015 on $46.7 million in revenue, according to the documents. Lyft said last month that it has gained market share in key markets, such as San Francisco, and has a gross revenue "run rate" of $1billion. For Uber's current round, the company is telling investors it has a gross revenue run rate of more than $10 billion globally, people familiar with the matter said. The number is typically calculated by annualizing a recent week, month, or quarter of the company's gross revenue, which means actual annual revenue may differ substantially. (Agencies)
MacD looks beyond burger in brand push New Delhi, Dec 5: McDonald's is ramping up its brand extension business in India. Although burgers continue to be the backbone of the US fast food chain, it now earns a fourth of its revenues from ice cream, smoothies and coffee. To speed up its brand extension business, the company has started a remodelling exercise to make its stores look fast-casual in South and West India. "We are trying to blur the line. This is what McDonald's will look like to millennials in the future," said Amit Jatia, vice-chairman of Westlife Development and McDonald's partner in West and South India. The burger chain has four brand extensions: Delivery, breakfast, dessert kiosks and McCafe. Jatia said sales value of these may touch Rs 850 crore in
four years. Along with selling burgers, that's roughly the sum Jatia makes from 216 McDonald's stores in the country. "However, I want to be clear about the fact that our brand extension lines don't cover all our restaurants. We are working on it. For instance, we have opened 52 McCafes. In three years, we expect our coffee business to earn around Rs 250 crore," he said. McCafe is a coffeehouse-style food and drink

chain owned by the burger chain. Interestingly, it has yielded more revenues for McDonald's than its regular stores in some markets. McCafes are housed inside regular McDonald's in India. Jatia said he has earmarked an investment of Rs 750 crore to open around 200 new restaurants in five years. His company Westlife Development operates McDonald's stores through its subsidiary, Hardcastle Restaurants.
While Westlife reported a 21% increase in revenue for the September quarter led by its restaurant business, McDonald's has been juggling with the dual problem of a sluggish economy and a legal battle with its estranged partner in North India, Vikram Bakshi, the owner of Connaught Plaza Restaurants. One of the first international quick service restaurants (QSR) to enter the domestic market, McDonald's was ousted from the position of the country's largest QSR player by US pizza maker Domino's in 2013. Subsequently, it slipped behind its US rival KFC and now resides in the third position, according to a Euromonitor report from August. The organized QSR business in the country is poised to grow at a CAGR of 25% to reach around Rs 16,800 crore by 2018, Jatia said. (Agencies)

Earlier, India started the day on a disastrous note as they lost Vijay to a lethal short ball bowled by Morkel. The tall speedster hit the back of length area as the ball kicked up viciously. The normally technically sound Vijay tried to awkwardly fend it off as he tried to get out of the way. The ball had brushed his armguards before being taken by Dane Vilas behind the stumps as he timed his jump to perfection. The Indian team management promoted Rohit Sharma at number three, trying to give him some valuable time with less pressure and a sizeable lead on the board. But the Mumbai lad again disappointed his fans as Morkel bowled one fuller that move a shade to rattle his off-stump.
