Pasighat-Bomjir NH-52 Bachao Committee submits memo to Ering Maksam Tayeng Pasighat, Sep 5

As a part of their continued fighting against handing over of National Highway52 from BRO/BRTF to state PWD, the PasighatBomjir NH-52 Bachao Committee (PBNH-52BC) led by Chairman Todol Pertin and Treasurer Kokong Ratan submitted a memorandum to Lok Sabha MP Ninong Ering yesterday at Mebo seeking his interference and help in cancelling the central government’s notification to hand over the NH-52 to PWD. “We the people of Mebo and Dambuk oppose the government’s decision to hand over NH-52 to State PWD from BRO/BRTF tooth & nail. We are also

ready to go to the extent of bloodshed if our genuine demands are not met by the government as NH-52 is not only lifeline to people of Mebo and Dambuk, it is also immensely important in the point of national security”, said Todol Pertin. The committee cites the example of LakhimpurBanderdewa road of neighboring Assam as example which was handed over to PWD from BRO. The road condition at LakhimpurBanderdewa are so worst that it is beyond description and the committee doesn’t want such condition at this part of Arunachal which has just seen good road in the form of NH-52 which was nicely maintained by BRO till date. The committee also says that, the re-

peatedly disconnected portion of NH-52 at Siku Bridge is being restored timely by BRO/BRTF as they have the requisite infrastructures and tech knowhow. The committee also questions the silence of Chief Minister Nabam Tuki over the issue who should have also supported the voice of this area of people who are seriously against the handing over. On the part of Ering, he assured to carry forward the voice of the people to the concern ministry. It is worth mentioning here that, MP Ninong Ering has already apprised the issue to MoRTH few months ago which was followed by submission of petition for the same by Adi Baane Kebang Youth Wing etc.

"Since he is citing lack of funds as the reason for failing to fight the flood situation, then let there be a government that can have funds," he said. Sarma also claimed that in the days to come, as many as 500 NSUI, Youth Congress and district-level Congress workers would soon join the BJP. "They will be joining batch by batch. We have to take into consideration the sentiments of the long-serving BJP workers and ensure that they do not get hurt," he said. "We will soon join the BJP officially at a suitable time. We will ensure that the party's Mission 84 (winning 84 of the state`s 126 assembly seats) is successful," Baruah said.

Once one of Guwahati’s poshest neighbourhoods, Sundarnagar, where Indrani Mukherjea, main accused in the murder of her daughter, Sheena Bora, grew up, is now in a state of decline. The one house that sta-nds out in utter neglect is Number 8, or Chanakya Neer, in which degeneration, it seems, has crept up on the inhabitants themselves. Upendra Kumar Bora, Ind-rani’s father, is suffering from dementia and his wife Durga Rani, say neighbours, is an Alzheimer’s patient “on her deathbed”. Many of the Boras’ relatives, however, suspect that they are “feigning mental illness so that they don’t get dragged into this murder,” as a distant cousin puts it. She says, “When I met them last, they seemed to be perfectly sound of mind.” But that, she says, was three years ago and wonders if Sheena’s disappearance had brought on the shock that unh--i-nged them. “That’s the only explanation I can think of, as they loved Sheena very much...maybe they were psychologically affected by her sudden disappearance. It was they who brought her up after all.” A distant aunt of Indrani, or Pori as she was called then, says: “They would make up stories about expensive

ET Correspondent Shillong, Sep 5: The State Coordination Committee of Coal Owners Miners & Dealers Forum (SCCOMDF) in Meghalaya has decided to wait till 15th September for the Meghalaya Government to come up with the Mining Plan in the State, and if not fulfilled, would seek permission from National Green Tribunal (NGT) to allow them to enable to make Mining Plan by themselves. The Forum (SCCOMDF) had received a setback after the NGT imposed a blanket ban on illegal and unscientific rathole coal mining in Meghalaya since April 2014. “Though the State Government is yet to notify the Mining Plan as demanded by the Forum, we have decided to soften our demand as the Government machinery is on the job to for-

mulate the Mining Plan to submit to the NGT”, SCCOMDF chairman Mr Sony Khyriem said. According to Mr Khyriem, the State Government is likely to submit the Mining Plan by 29th September to the NGT. Meanwhile, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) would conduct its hearing on coal mining case on 29th and 30th September. Earlier, the Forum had set an ultimatum for the State Government which is 5th August to frame Mining Plan and to notify by 31st August last, and threatened that it would formulate the Plan by itself if the Government further delays the process. However, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma had, earlier rejected the ultimatum of the Forum saying that the Government works without ultimatum for the benefit of the people.

ASTRO FOR YOU No matter what you do, today you are not going to have your way. The times when you have been selfish are finished. Besides, you are likely to solicit trouble today. It may actually turn out to be good for you, provided you change the focus of your actions. It is very likely that you will stay physically alert and spiritually awake today. You will discover an artistic temperament as you engage in performing arts, designing, graphics and special effects. You will also appear extremely tempting to the opposite gender. Your heightened sensitivity will make you an emotional wreck today. You will be desirous of solitude and will avoid the company of others. Meditative practices, religious rituals or yoga can help lift your mood. Business rivals will try to wipe out your prestige, but will fail. Bold people can steer clear of hurdles and you are bold. So you will be successful. People will praise your honesty and generosity. Your efforts alone beget you laurels. Your interactions with those around will you be tinged with understanding and empathy, as you will make an effort to solve their problems. Your relations with people will become stronger as a result. You need to stop worrying about others and pay more attention to your family. You enjoy a strong position, but its foundations will be rattled today. In all probability you may have to encounter some unwanted problems which will be a cause for worry. However, you may still end up doing something beneficial if you get out of the rut and attempt to do something unusual. To be or not to be? Well, that may not be your precise state of mind, but there are possibilities of you being puzzled and perplexed today when it comes to professional issues. Chances are that in the afternoon, you may happen to run into an unpleasant situation, so just keep your cool. In any case, things shall get better by the evening. The latter part of the day is favourable, so go ahead and express you long-cherished love for that special someone. You shall be a live wire today – full of energy and zest. Freelancers will take imagination to new levels when working. At work, your inspiration will kickstart an epidemic of vigour and high-performance. Surprises in the evening will end the day on a high note. Work, work and more work will be your day’s agenda. A power-packed performance is expected from you. Though hectic, the day will be easy going as your bosses are likely to be lenient on you. Love and affection from family is on the cards as well. You’re on the verge of losing hopes as you can’t bear the weight of work and responsibilities any more. But, like the strong individual that you are, you are not going to put your arms down without fighting fiercely. Also, your mental strength and physical stamina will be acknowledged and appreciated by one and all. It is not only important to ideate, but also to get those ideas executed is equally important. Don’t worry though, you are good at both. Icing on the cake will be your communication skill which gets you through the door every time. For students, it will be an amazing day. You are likely to be filled with overwhelming ambition today. You will be driven and prepare meticulously to tackle your projects. Evening should see you in the company of like-minded individuals, busy with intellectual activities.

Meghalaya ADC forms FTD to seek special protection Contd. from Page 1

The decision to this effect was taken at the grand council held here at Polo ground, Shillong. The grand council was organized by the ruling People Democratic Forum (PDF) led by Congress in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and were attended by traditional heads, and people from different parts of Khasi and Jaintia hills. Some MDCs from the opposition side skipped the meeting on alleged political motive by the Congress party. Announcing the decision at the Grand Council, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the

KHADC Mr Pynshngain N Syiem said that the FTD would be a body to monitor any issue related to traditional system in the Khasi Hills. He said that the FTD would seek the audience of the central government to provide special protection for Khasi and Jaintia people similar to Nagaland and Mizoram where article 371 (A) and (G) were applicable respectively. “We would like to send a message to the central government on the need to give us special protection under the Constitution of India”, Mr Syiem said. The KHADC had convened the Grand Council as a mark of protest against the intention of the State Government to come up with its own leg-

islation on the traditional institutions in the State. “Issues of traditional institutions and customary practices fall under the ambit of the Autonomous District Council (ADCs) as empowered by the Sixth Scheduled of the Constitution of India”, KHADC CEM said adding that, the State government should stop using any means to dilute the powers of the Council. The Grand Council has also opposed the notification issued by the State Government to extend the jurisdiction of the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) outside Municipal area in Shillong. Demanding revocation of the Ordinance promulgated was also taken by

the Grand Council. Earlier the State Government had promulgated the Ordinance with a view to enable the traditional heads to issue certificate after the Meghalaya High Court hammered down the powers of the traditional institution in the State. However, the Ordinance was rejected by the traditional heads, the KHADC, and even political parties called it as being against the customary practices of the Khasi and Jaintia people. They wanted that matters related to the traditional institutions should be dealt with by the Autonomous District Council as empowered by the Sixth Scheduled, and the State Government should not interfere in any way.

rose by 7.6 per cent in July 2015 against 6.5 per cent last July. “All markets showed growth with the strongest increases occurring in India and China,” IATA said. China clocked the second highest passenger traffic growth at 10.9 per cent after India, as per the data. The Russian Federation posted an 8.8 per cent growth during the period, the global airlines body said. “The U.S. and Brazil markets grew by 6.6 per cent and 5.9 per cent in July 2015 respectively, it

added. However, IATA said the recent developments in the Chinese economy, including deep declines in the country’s stock exchange, have increased concerns about further slowdown in the economy. “July results were strongly positive but slowing global trade and the wild gyrations of stock exchanges around the globe suggest that we may be in for some turbulence in coming months,” IATA Director General and Chief Executive Tony Tyler said in a

statement. “The downward movement in stock markets around the globe reflects investors’ growing concerns about slowing trade and economic growth in emerging economies, as well as China’s continued shift towards domestic markets. Aviation’s connectivity creates economic opportunities and contributes to job creation. The Girl Who Ran From Herself Contd. from Page 1 vacations, which we could tell were not true, or about how much they were spending on Pori’s education, just to show off. The rest of us always laughed at them behind their backs. They were the kind of relatives you wanted to avoid.” Indeed, all those who knew the Boras in Guwahati are convinced that Indrani’s “cutthroat ambition”, as manifested in her spectacular rise, is rooted in her par--ents’ “unnatural obsession with wea-lth and social status”. Sheila Bora, Guwahati-based retired professor and daughter of scientist Prabhakar Bora, rem--embers how the Boras would love to associate themselves with her family bec-ause of her father’s position in society. “They, especially Pori’s father, would drop in every so often and bring their daughter along.” Sheila, 67, recalls Pori as a pre-teen girl who was “extremely rowdy”. “As the only child, she was the centre of their attention and they spoilt her. She got the best of everything—from education to clothes—and she showed it off. She would wear these frilly lace dre-sses and the parents would talk about how expensive her clothes were.” It is said that Indrani’s parents, both of whom came from the backward Tejpur and Lakkhipur districts in Assam, were desperate to fit into Guwahati’s upper-class

circles. “Babul Bora (Upendra’s nic-k--name) was the son of the Tejpur post master and one of five brothers...,” says a Guwahati entrepreneur who grew up in the same village as Indrani’s father. He says that he rem-embers the family as ‘dishonest’. “None of the families of our villages were well off. I had gone off to study in Shillong and was working part time. I managed to save up about Rs 10,000, which was a lot in those days, put it in an envelope and sent it home by registered mail. When it was delivered, it was empty. The envelope had the post office’s stamp on it and was resealed. We are convinced that the post master opened it, something he regularly did with letters and other mail. But I couldn’t imagine that he would steal the money.” These acquaintances and relatives, however, dismiss rumours and reports that Upendra is not Indrani’s biological father or that he abused and molested her. “If Pori claims this, she is lying,” says another family member. “My husband and I know both sides of Pori’s family— Upendra and Durga—from before they were married. We attended their wedding and we know Pori is their daughter. She may be trying to play the victim now that she has been accused of this murder. Her parents doted on her, though they were a little strict about her timings and wanted to control her movements and the people she mixed with.

But to call Upendra a mol-ester is wrong. He may be a show-off or dishonest otherwise, but wouldn’t sexually abuse anyone, far less his own daughter. That’s not him,” she says. Something which almost everyone who knew Indrani since her childhood vou-ches for is her ruthless lack of compassion for anyone, not even the parents who loved her. This is what makes people in Guwahati believe that she “is not bey--ond” committing a crime as horrific as filicide. “There was always a sense of cru-elty about her—she thoughtlessly dum--ped one boyfriend after another without any guilt,” remembers a classmate. In fact, she is said to have left her first husband, Bishnu Prasad Chaudhury, a Guwahati-based lawyer with whom she reportedly eloped while still in college, only four months into the marriage because she wanted to pursue higher studies. What happened in Shillong is another story. Says a neighbour of Indrani, “In 1987 or 89 she returned to Guwahati to her parents’ home with this man in tow and introduced him as her boyfriend Bablu, who we now learn is called Siddhartha Das. She was pregnant. He was the son of a shopkeeper in Shillong and we considered him ‘not up to her standards’, but he was quite handsome.” According to her, Indrani and Siddhartha seemed to be happy for a while. Indrani’s father report-

edly set up a shop for him at Guwahati. But barely a year after Sheena was born, when Indrani got pregnant for the second time, things suddenly changed again. Her son Mikhail was born. Bablu’s business was not doing well at all. Pori left Bablu, and the children with the grandparents, and went off to Calcutta, where she got married to businessman Sanjeev Khanna, who was part of the metropolis’s elite circles. Indrani now had a toehold in the urbane upper classes and would consolidate her position for the next few years. After that marriage ended in divorce, Indrani walked out with the custody of their only daughter, Vidhie. The next rung on the ladder of social success, a glitzy highlife in Mumbai, beckoned. The apotheosis of Indrani’s social ambition came in 2002, when she got hitched to the powerful media tycoon, Peter Mukerjea. Evening descends at the house at Sundarnagar too. The old man and woman are locked up inside. Three rooms at the back of the house have been let out. On the first day after the news broke, the nurses claimed that the “house is in a mess, with hundreds of liquor bottles strewn aro-und”, giving rise to speculations about Mikhail’s associates. One police officer at the Dispur police station says he found discrepancies in Mikhail’s accounts but would not comment now.

Tripura Youth Congress protests against attack on judge by CPI-M activists Agartala, Sep 5: The Youth Congress unit of Tripura staged a protest here to demand the arrest of CPI-M activists who allegedly attacked a sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) here last Wednesday during a 24-hour nation-wide strike to protest against changes in labour laws and the privatisation of public sector undertakings (PSUs). According to local media, a group of picketers attacked the Sabroom SDM Court on September 2 and tried to assault the magistrate to enforce the nationwide bandh called by ten central trade unions in support of their 12point charter of demands. Several police personnel, including officer-in-charge of the

spite of the SDPO and OC had lodging FIR against few leaders they have not yet been arrested under political pressure. We are raising question that the SDM had gone to office for some legal mat-

Congress moves disqualification petition against 8 Nagaland MLAs Kohima, Sep 5: The Congress in Nagaland petitioned the assembly Speaker on Friday for disqualification of eight of its legislators for attracting provisions of the AntDefection Law after they switched sides and voted against a directive issued by the party. Informing this, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K Therie said the party filed eight separate disqualification petitions in respect of the eight legislators af-

ter waiting for several months expecting that "good sense" would prevail among them. The eight legislators had joined hands with the ruling Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) headed by Naga People's Front (NPF) of which the BJP is an important stakeholder. The Congress legislators were "mentally and physically" not with the Congress for all practical purposes and had become part of the DAN government, he said.

"The petition was delayed for several months expecting good sense will prevail, as it was not possible for the Congress party to create precedence by compromising with the communal ideology of the BJP. However, it was unfortunate that the eight Congress MLAs were mentally and physically not with Congress for all purpose after joining the NPF led BJP-DAN government," Therie said in a statement. An order from the police headquarters issued to all police officials on September 2 has expressed shock over the death of nearly 100 police personnel during this year, most of due

to alcohol related cases. From January 1 till September 1 last, 95 police personnel had died. While three of them were killed in militants ambush on March 28, most of the rest died due to alcohol related cases. In average, one policeman dies every two days. "The high rate of deaths in the police department is a serious issue, even if the cause of death is something else other than alcohol,'' said a police official, who asked not to be named. The police

official added that this may not necessarily be the results of the new liquor law that allows selling of liquor in wine shops from March 16 this year. " It could instead be prolonged excessive intake of liquor that affected their health,'' he said. The order on September 2 put emphasis on regular exercise and physical fitness training and healthcare for all police personnel. It also advised policemen to kick bad habits like smoking and drinking. (Agencies)

Govt.'s decision on OROP must be to the satisfaction of ex-servicemen: Congress

Ex-servicemen will wait for Parrikar's OROP declaration before deciding next steps

DIBRUGARH, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6

ANI New Delhi, Sept 5: Congress leader Manoj Jha on Saturday said the NDA Government's decision on One Rank, One Pension (OROP) must give satisfaction to the ex-servicemen. "It should be to the full satisfaction of the soldiers sitting there at the Jantar Mantar," Jha told. "If in spite of this

RSS ideology, an inspiration for BJP: says Siddharthnath Singh

ANI New Delhi, Sept 5: Bharatiya Janata Party national secretary Siddharthnath Singh on Saturday said that the BJP has taken inspiration from RSS ideology and certainly follows the right direction. "Whenever praise comes from the RSS, it is a matter of pride for us," Singh said. Meanwhile, the opposition questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over RSS-BJP meet and accused the Centre of following the guidelines of the RSS and its policy of violation. Declining all the comments made by opposition, Siddharthnath Singh said, "Certainly the BJP Government is on the right path and fulfilling commitments that had left incomplete before the 2014 elections." " BJP'S commitment is to serve the nation and work for India," he added.

Kidnapped policeman killed in Chhattisgarh ANI Sukma , Sept 5: Policeman Peeladas, who was kidnapped by Maoists from Sukma district, was killed on Saturday. Peeladas, an assistant constable, whose body was found near Polampalli Bazar, was kidnapped by Maoists in insurgency-hit Sukma district on August 31. It is believed that the Maoists had kidnapped Peeladas after the latter had participated as an SPO during Salwa Judum in 2006.

ISIS blows up three ancient funeral towers in Palmyra ANI New York, Sept 5: Syria's antiquities chief Maamoun Abdulkarim has said that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) blew up another three ancient funeral towers in the city of Palmyra. Unesco has condemned the earlier destruction of a World Heritage site by ISIS, saying it was a war crime committed by the terror group. Abdulkarim said that the militants, who had already destroyed two Roman-era temples in the city, blew up the tombs, which date from between A.D. 44 and 103. ISIS earlier blew up the ancient Temple of Baal and the Temple of Baalshamin, according to a United Nations analysis of satellite images.

delay, the government has woken up to this reality and arrives at some kind of formula, which is akin to the demands made by the soldiers, that's a welcome, even if it is late," he added. Jha further said, "The most important constituents of this nation are the soldiers who lay everything for this nation. They are sitting there

for last 83 days. This is one of the most disturbing images I have ever seen in my political life or experience I can't recall anything." It is probable that the NDA Government would be making an announcement today on the much awaited issue. The government has been facing criticism after its determination to stick to its position

on a five-year reset clause, while the military veterans are insisting the pensions be revised at least once every two years. The ex-servicemen had originally demanded an annual adjustment. The OROP scheme has been a long-standing demand of nearly three million ex-servicemen and war widows in the country.

ANI New Delhi, Sept 5: The exservicemen delegation on Saturday said they would take note of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar's address first, before deciding on their next step on onerank-one-pension (OROP) scheme issue. The delegation who met Defence Minister Parrikar said that government has broadly accepted the concept of OROP. "We met the Defence Minister with our delegation. He

scheme and its benefit would be given to all ex-servicemen, excluding voluntary retirees from July 1, 2014. "The government has taken the decision to implement the OROP. Under the OROP scheme the benefit would be given from July 1, 2014. The base year would be 2013," said Parrikar at the press conference. "The gap between the rate of pension

of current pensioners and past pensioners will be breached every five years. Arrears would be paid in four half-yearly instalments," he added. "All widows, including war widows, will be paid arrears in one instalment. OROP would be fixed on the basis of calendar year 2013. Pension will be fixed for all pensioners retiring in the same

niversary of the 1965 war heroes. People who had shed their blood during the 1965 war, are agitating fifty years later in this hot and humid atmosphere for their legitimate rights, and the government is least concerned," Tewari said. He told , "If there were no elections to be held in

Bihar, the government would not have even cared, the agitation would have continued for one more year." He further said, "The BJP feels their prospects in Bihar would be undermined, that is why, and they are trying to extend an olive branch to the ex-servicemen."

"But, the fact is, they have treated ex-servicemen in the most cavalier manner. This is not the way in which people who have shed blood for the country need to be dealt with, or treated by the country." he added. The One Rank, One Pension (OROP) scheme has been a long-

standing demand of nearly three-million exservicemen and war widows in the country. It seeks to ensure that a uniform pension is paid to defence personnel, who retire at the same rank with the same length of service irrespective of their date of retirement.

Congress accuses PM Modi of using official media to portray self ANI New Delhi, Sept 5: Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit on Saturday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using the official media to portray and project himself, and added that the latter is trying to show himself as an extraordinary person was pathetic. "Prime Minis-

ter is unnecessarily using official media to portray a personal self. In everybody's life,

everybody's habit, there is something extraordinary. There is always something special that a person can share," Dikshit told. "Prime Minister trying to show he is something extraordinary is pathetic. It's sign of an extremely weak man. You have been elected to run the government, take this coun-

try forward, not to tell us what you had for breakfast, what you want to tell the children," he added. "Your capacity is to articulate or to do certain things is a different part of character... In future, the pension would be fixed every five years," he further said. "It is estimated that the expenditure on arrears alone would be Rs.10000 to 12000 crores," he said.

Congress says Centre and PM Modi most insensitive to legitimate demands of ex-servicemen ANI Chandigarh, Sept 5: Congress leader Manish Tewari on Saturday accused the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being insensitive to ex-servicemen concerns on the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme. "It is the 50th an-

has told us that he will give a statement at 2.30 p.m. today, and then we will decide

what our next steps will be" said Major General (Retired) Satbir Singh, the chairman of the Indian Ex-Servicemens' Movement (IESM). Major General Singh also pointed out that the delegation has told the defence minister that the revision in the pension scheme must not be such that a junior ex-serviceman gets more pension than his seniors. The government is likely to announce the OROP scheme in a short while from now.

ANI Bodh Gaya, Sept 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday termed India as 'Buddhist India', saying the country has imbibed the values of Lord Buddha. "I would personally call India as a "Buddhist India", as it has imbibed the values and virtues of the teachings of Lord Buddha by the religious scholars incorporating them in their literature," Modi said while addressing the delegates on SAMVAD - the Global Hindu Buddhist Initiative. "After Pandit Nehru and Atal ji, I have the honour of coming here,"

he added. Modi also pointed out that Lord Buddha was a great preacher of equality and the land of Bodh Gaya has distinctive place in history of mankind. "Hinduism after Buddha's advent became Hindu Buddhism or Buddhist Hinduism," the Prime Minister added. The Prime Minister's visit to Bodh Gaya coincides with Day 3 of SAMVAD - the Global Hindu Buddhist Initiative on Conflict Avoidance and Environment Consciousness, during which the delegates for this event will be present at Bodh Gaya.

Do not politicise OROP: Naidu to Congress ANI New Delhi, Sept 5: Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday asked the Congress Party not to politicise the issue of One Rank, One Pension (OROP). "Do not politicise the issue. You (Congress) have failed. We are moving forward in that direction and

there has been progress. I am confident the government will find a solution to it," Naidu told. "Discussion is going on regarding what will be its economic implications. The Congress Government was in power for ten years, why did not they implement it? Is (Rs.) 400-500 crore enough for it?" he added. "The government is try-

ing to find a proper solution to it. The finance and the defence ministries, and the Prime Minister's Office are involved in the discussions. It is the duty of the government to pay respect to the exservicemen," Naidu said. Naidu further added, "No one needs to have any doubt regarding our intention. The discussion is going on and it is always

good to have discussion in a democracy. The Congress did not do anything in ten years, and now, they are criticising us. If it is so easy, then why did not they do it in ten years?" The long awaited announcement on the OROP scheme is likely to be made by the government on Saturday. The government has been facing criticism after its de-

termination to stick to its position on a five-year reset clause, while the military veterans are insisting the pensions be revised at least once every two years. The ex-servicemen had originally demanded an annual adjustment. The OROP scheme has been a long-standing demand of nearly three million exservicemen and war widows in the country.

Anti-Pak slogans raised during martyr Lance Naik Mohan Goswami's funeral procession ANI Nainital, Sept 5: Anti-Pakistan slogans were raised during martyr Lance Naik Mohan Goswami's funeral procession in Lalkuan on Saturday. The martyr had created history by eliminating 10 terrorists in 11 days before laying down his life.

Thirty-one-year-old Lance Naik Goswami hailed from Indira Nagar village in Haldwani Tehsil, and joined the elite Para Commandos in December 2002. He was involved in the Rafiabad operations on August 26 and 27, and the fierce gunfight resulted in the elimination

of three more LeT terrorists and the apprehension of one terrorist who was identified as Sajjad Ahmad alias Abu Ubed Ullah, a resident of Muzzafargarh. The Rafiabad operation established proof of Pakistan's complicity in abetting terrorism in Jammu and Kash-

mir. Lance Naik Goswami volunteered to be part of the operation launched in the dense Hafruda Forest near Kupwara, and this proved to be his last operation, but not before eliminating three terrorists in a heavy gun battle. A true soldier, he breathed his last

in action. His mortal remains were flown by an IAF aircraft to Bareilly and then taken by an Army helicopter to Pant Nagar this morning. From there, it will taken to his native place where he will be cremated with full military honours.

13 millitants killed in Tajikistan Dushanbe, Sept 5: Thirteen militants were killed on Saturday in Tajikistan, a day after their armed group allegedly carried out deadly attacks on police, the interior ministry said. The operation by both the army and police follows Friday attacks that saw eight policemen and nine militants killed and which the government said were

orchestrated by former deputy defence minister Abduhalim Nazarzoda. "At this time, 32 members of Nazarzoda`s criminal group have been detained, 13 of whom have been eliminated," the ministry said in a statement. Four policemen were killed in a shootout with militants on the outskirts of the capital Dushanbe on Friday and another

four officers were killed in an attack in the town of Vahdat just outside the capital, the interior ministry said. A large-scale security operation was underway to find the assailants, who seized a "large amount of weapons and ammunition" during Friday`s attacks, the ministry said. More than 500 weapons and ammunition have been seized

from group during the operation, authorities said. The government has said that 51-year-old Nazarzoda -- relieved of his duties on Friday "in connection with a crime committed" -- fought on the side of the United Tajik Opposition during a civil war that lasted between 1992 to 1997. Authorities have also claimed that the former

deputy defence minister was a member of the opposition Islamic Renaissance Party of Tajikistan (IRPT) that the government effectively shut down last week. The IRPT has denied that Nazarzoda is one of its members. Nazarzoda and up to eight of his accomplices have fled to the mountains northeast of the capital, the ministry said. Authorities

Historian and economist Zaidi says 'Pakistan lost terribly' in 1965 war with India ANI Karachi, Sept 5: The meeting between Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz has not offered a clear signal on whether reconciliation talks between the Taliban and the Government of Afghanistan would resume. Aziz returned to Islamabad after a day-

long trip to Kabul. President Ghani reiterated his policy of good neighbourly ties with Pakistan, in his address to the participants of the sixth edition of Regional Economic Conference on Afghanistan (RECCAVI) in Kabul. President Ghani also pointed fingers at unnamed elements within Pakistan who, in his view, were opposed to peace in Afghanistan.

Pakistan urges UNSC to 'take notice of firing by Indian troops'

ANI Karachi, Sept 5: Historian and political economist Akbar S. Zaidi has dismissed "the victory myth" regarding the 1965 Pakistan-India war, saying that can be no a bigger lie, as Pakistan lost terribly. Zaidi's comments came during his thoughtprovoking lecture titled

'Questioning Pakistan's history', just two days away from observing Defence Day and marking the 50th anniversary of the1965 war in the country. He said that the history that is taught in Pakistan is not focused on the people of the country, but rather on the making of Pakistan. Zaidi began

the lecture by thought provoking questions such as "what is Pakistan's history and is there a need to question Pakistan's history. And when was Pakistan formed? Aug 14, 1947 or Aug 15, 1947". Zaidi read out an excerpt from a Pakistan Studies textbook in which it was claimed Pakistan came

into being in 712 A D when the Arabs came to Sindh and Multan. He exclaimed "This is utter rubbish!" He said the first interaction with Muslims and Arabs occurred in Kerala in South India for trading purposes. Zaidi also said that the 1940 Pakistan Resolution called for the recognition

of Muslims within Hindustan and not for a separate entity. He also criticised how history in Pakistan is taught to students. It is focused on rulers and generals and not on social history, he said. The event was organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences, Karachi University.

Tianjin plans to build a 24-hectare park on the site of the blast Beijing, Sept 5: A monument will be built on the site of the deadly explosions that rocked China's Tianjin city last month, authorities announced. Tianjin plans to build a 24-hectare park on the site of the blast and the monument will be given pride of place, Binhua New Area Planning and Land Resources Administration said on Friday. In addition, there are also plans to build primary schools and kindergartens in the area, and over 5,000 apartments

have been made available to those who lost their homes as a result of the explosion. Two explosions ripped through a warehouse in Tianjin Port on August 12. The warehouse was storing large amounts of toxic chemicals, including around 700 tonnes of sodium cyanide. One hundred and sixty people died, including 96 firefighters and 11 policemen. Eight firefighters and five civilians are still missing. Hundreds more still remain in hospital.(Agencies)

Tehran, Sept 5: Iranian lawmakers will have the chance to give their opinions on the nuclear deal with major world powers at around the end of September, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijanisaid on Saturday. Larijani did not, however, say whether Parliament would be given a vote on the agreement, which provides for lifting sanctions on Iran in exchange

for rolling back Tehran's nuclear programme. Last month, parliament announced the makeup of a 15-member panel largely composed of conservative lawmakers to review the historic deal."The review by committees will be completed in early Mehr (the Iranian month between September 23 to October 22) and the representatives of the people will

give their opinion," Larijani was quoted by the ISNA news agency as saying. Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said that Parliament should examine the agreement with the United States, Britain, China, France, Russia and Germany. Some Iranian MPs want the government to submit the deal as a bill for Parliament to vote on.

But the government and nuclear negotiators believe such a vote is against Iran's national interests as it would turn voluntary commitments into legal obligations. Formal oversight of the accord rests with Iran's Supreme National Security Council, which is headed by President Hassan Rouhani and reports to Khamenei. Larijani, who backs the agreement

reached with the West, said this week during a visit to the United States that "there will be heated discussions and debate in the Iranian parliament" about the deal. On Wednesday, US President Barack Obama won enough backing in Congress to ensure that he can override with his veto power any US vote rejecting the Iran deal.(Agencies)

Japan lifts evacuation order for Chinese military to layoff radiation-hit Fukushima town 1.70 lakh officers: Report Tokyo Sept 5: The Japanese government on Saturday lifted the evacuation order for the first town near the crippled Fukushima reactors, more than four years after ordering mass relocations near the tsunamiwrecked nuclear plant. Among communities where the entire population was forced to evacuate after the nuclear crisis started in March 2011, Naraha is the first town to allow all of its residents to return home permanently. It is seen as a pilot case for nearby areas, with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government aiming to lift a raft of evacuation orders by March 2017. But only about 10 percent of 7,368 registered residents of Naraha were expected to return home due to fears

over continued nuclear contamination and uncertainty over whether enough locals -- particularly young people -would come back to restart the community. Local mayor Yukiei Matsumoto pledged Naraha's rebirth would finally be able to commence. "The true reconstruction of our town will begin now," he said during a televised speech to his staff at the town hall. "Let us work together for the creation of a new Naraha." Meltdowns in three of the reactors -- 20 kilometres (12 miles) away -- blanketed vast tracts of land with isotopes of iodine and cesium, products of nuclear reactions that are hazardous to health if ingested, inhaled or absorbed. Evacuation orders have

already been lifted for selected spots of regional cities, with the government saying decontamination work has reduced radiation levels. Former Naraha residents held a candlelight vigil overnight to mark the rebirth of their town. However, the town`s future remains uncertain at best. Many young people have found new jobs and started lives in cities far away from the crippled reactors, since leaving more than four years ago. Naraha restaurateur Satoru Yamauchi, a father of four who relocated to Tokyo after the meltdown, has expressed his profound attachment to his home but said he cannot see himself restarting his business there. "There is nothing good about going back," he told AFP in a

recent tearful interview. But authorities say Naraha is now safe after years of decontamination work, in which crews removed topsoil, washed exposed road surfaces and wiped down buildings. Government data has also shown contamination levels are relatively lower in Naraha, which effectively resides upwind from the site of the nuclear disaster. The end of the evacuation order is "based on citizens` real voices and plans to accelerate reconstruction," mayor Matsumoto said in a statement released in July, adding a "prolonged evacuee life is not desirable". Still, activists have pointed out that many areas show high levels of contamination, and many are unfit for habitation.

Beijing Sept 5: China's new move to downsize its 2.3-million strong military will result in laying off of about 1.70 lakh officers as the world's largest army plans to scrap two of its existing seven commands and three corps to streamline forces. Officers will account for more than half of the 300,000 personnel to go in President Xi Jinping's plans to streamline the People's Liberation Army (PLA), Hong Kongbased the South China Morning Post said, citing unnamed military officials. At least 170,000 officers, ranging from lieutenants to colonels, in China's land forces would be laid off after two of the existing seven military commands and three army corps were scrapped, the Post quoted

Chinese officials as saying. They will be offered early retirement packages. Each key military command has two to three army corps, with each corps having 30,000 to 50,000 troops. Shutting down two commands would mean the loss of about 120,000 personnel. The massive downsizing plans were also aimed at encouraging pilots from the land forces to merge into the air force and navy, as part of the PLA's drive to master joint operational warfare as it set its sights beyond borders. The PLA, the world's largest military force, would announce some details of the downsizing later this month. Soon after Xi announced 3 lakh troops cut at this week's military parade to mark the 70th an-

niversary of the victory against Japan, Defence Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun clarified the move was aimed at further modernising and restructuring the army, and the lay-offs would be completed by 2017. With the exception of the Beijing Garrison, which is directly under the PLA's powerful Central Military Commission and safeguards the capital, all provincial and municipal garrisons would be shut down and 50,000 personnel dismissed, the Post report said. As many as 100,000 troops from non-combat units, such as medical, communications, and artists brigades, would be cut, and 50,000 soldiers from border forces will merge into the People's Armed Police, the sources

said. All of those laid off would be offered good compensation packages, with 50,000 transferred to civilian posts, the sources said. Some would be offered inducements to retire early. Once the overhaul was completed, the PLA would be left with five key military commands. The 15 army corps remaining under those five commands would strengthen joint operational command by recruiting soldiers from the air force and navy, officials said. China is ranked third in terms of military might - behind the US and Russia. The US, the world's sole superpower, has 1.4 million active military personnel, with another 1.1 million in reserve. DIBRUGARH, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6

Rains wreak havoc across Arunachal Government slow in providing aid This year's monsoon once again brings heavy flooding in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, displacing many people and victimizing some. Several districts of Arunachal Pradesh continued to reel under flood-like situation triggered by incessant rain over the past few days. Around 500 affected villagers have been evacuated from their houses and moved to four relief camps at Government Upper Primary School, Old Sunpura, Aganwadi Centre, Old Sunpura, Community Hall, Sunpura and Govt. Upper Primary School, Hatiduba in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh alone. The flood situation in Lohit district also worsened in the past three days as all the rivers in and around Tezu and Sunpura circles are flowing above the danger mark cutting off the Hunli-Desali block of the district and the whole of Dibang Valley district from the rest of the country. The level of Deopani River has too risen alarmingly cutting off the Hunli-Desali block of Lower Dibang district. Whereas at least 25 dwelling houses have reportedly been washed away by the ravaging Dibang river at Anpum village and nine more houses were swept away at Loglung village under Dambuk Sub-Division of Lower Dibang Valley District in Arunachal Pradesh. The flood situation in Changlang district also remained unchanged with many areas flooded at Bordumsa and Diyun circles of the district. And it has badly affected normal life and livestock. Schools and other government institutions were forced to shut down by the increasing floodwater. All the rivers of Chongkham and Wakro are reported to be flowing near the danger level with embankments at Sibrimukh, Alubari, Bereng Mukh, Kamlang Nagar, Chakma village and Chagli Khuti badly damaged. Around 600 people of 117 families are taking shelter in three relief camps set up at Jenglai, Kaba and New Silatoo, although water level of various rivers in the district has gradually started to recede with slight improvement in the weather condition. But the Noa Dehing, Lohit and Jengthu Rivers are still flowing above the danger level. Moreover according to a report from East Siang district, flash floods caused by the Silasuti River breached NH 52 at Dimow, snapping road communication between Silapthar and Pasighat. Roing town is also in complete darkness since last three days. The rain too have wreaked havoc in Lumla, as the road at Mangnam village, linking Lumla to Tawang has been washed away, cutting it off from the rest of the country. Visibly, if the rain continues for another 24 hours at this rate, all the rivers in Lohit district may cross the danger level resulting in huge loss of life and property as road communication in between Lohit district and Tinsukia via Parsuram Kund and via Alubarighat has also been snapped. The floods in this region are severe and quite frequent which needs to be managed on war footing. And, in spite of this, little has been done on the part of the Government to device strategies to manage it effectively as they have evidently failed to control the damage and devastation caused due to floods.

High cancer rates Smoke or smokeless forms The North-East has four times higher cancer rates than neighbouring states Bihar and Orissa, possibly because of high tobacco consumption. And according to the latest report of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). In men, age-adjusted incidence rate of all types of cancers is highest in Aizawl district of Mizoram followed by East Khasi Hills (Meghalaya) and Mizoram state. In women, the highest incidence is in Aizawl district followed by Assam and Mizoram state. ICMR's "Three Year Report of Population Based Cancer Registries 2009 2011" , in terms of crude rate (ratio of affected people per 100,000 population), the highest rate of cancer has been seen in Aizawl district of Mizoram-168.2 men and 149.5 women per 100,000 population-followed by Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala with 143.5 men and 144.3 women per 100,000 people. The most striking thing reported is that tobacco-related cancers accounted for 42 per cent of all male deaths and 18.3 per cent of all female deaths. There were twice as many deaths as a result of oral cancer (due to tobacco chewing), compared with lung cancer. Cancers caused due to tobacco smoking are lung, urinary bladder, oralcavity (mouth and tongue), sino-nasal cavity, naso-pharynx, oro-pharynx and hypopharynx, larynx, pancreas, oesophagus, stomach, liver, uterine cervix andmyeloid leukemia. Use of smokeless tobacco is also known to cause cancers of oral cavity, oro-pharynx, and oesophagus Beside this the people in north east India are addicted to other sources of tobacco too. Tobacco is available on smoke or smokeless forms. The forms of tobacco in smoke forms are cigarette; cigar and pipe whereas the smokeless form of tobacco are chewable (ghutkha) and Snuff (khaini). The chewable form of tobacco, very commonly known as Ghutkha performs the same role as like betel nut, lime and raw tobacco does to cause cancer. The smoke from tobacco contains 60 known cancer causing substances where as the smokeless form of tobacco contains 28 chemicals that support a cancer. Mostly teenagers can be seen practicing the habit of tobacco in both the forms now days. In North East India, women are following the men to practice the culture of tobacco. The teenagers who are the future and the women who are the beauty and proud of the nation should not follow these ill practices. Smokeless tobacco is responsible behind causing cancer in the oral cavity more than the smoke form. Although on February 2014, Assam became the first state to legally ban consumption of all forms of smokeless tobacco, including pan masala containing tobacco and nicotine, through an act which was made into effect since February 2014 but nothing such had been implemented as the purpose of banning gutkha was not served in the right direction as we see every pan shops selling the banned product.

India Approves $1.1 Billion Helicopter Contract for Additional Russian Mi-17s New Delhi's fleet of Russian Mi-17 helicopters is set to grow yet again. ? ............Ankit Panda India is slated to purchase up to 48 Mil Mi-17 V5 helicopters from Russia in a purchase worth $1.1 billion. The Indian Defense Acquisition Council (DAC), the body charged with approving Indian defense purchases and chaired by the defense minister, Manohar Parrikar, approved the order on Wednesday. The helicopters will enter service with

the Indian Air Force. The DAC's decision is not unexpected: Alexander Mikheyev, the general director of Russian Helicopters, had told Russia's Interfax news agency that New Delhi would place an order for additional units. According to Russian state media, India already operates 139 Mi-17s worth more than $2 million. In comments to Russia's TASS news agency, a spokesperson from the Indian Air

Force noted that "The advanced Russian-made helicopters will be used in difficult-terrain areas ranging from deserts to mountains along the Pakistani and Chinese borders." "Mi-17V5S helicopters make up the backbone of the transport helicopter fleet of the IAF," it added. India currently uses its Mi-17s for border surveillance, transport, and logistics. India first ordered a batch of 80 Mi-17 V5s in 2008,

eventually taking delivery of the helicopters between 2011 and 2013. Russia and India agreed to expand the initial order for an additional 71 units, which are slated for delivery before the end of the year. The latest deal demonstrates that defense cooperation between Russia and India continues at a steady pace despite reports in recent years that New Delhi is beginning to favor the United States for its defense import needs.

Additionally, Russia's recent decision to sell Pakistan its advanced Mi-35 Hind suggested that Moscow's approach to selling arms in South Asia was changing, possibly leading to an overall deterioration in the long-standing defense commercial relationship between Moscow and New Delhi. The Mi-17?s original design is optimized for transport operations, but offensive-capable variants ex-

ist, including a gunship variant. The Mi-17, an export version of the Mi8, is operated by scores of countries, including by India's neighbor and rival Pakistan. The V5 variant of the Mi-17 is one of the newest and can carry cargo on an external sling weighing up to 4 tons. Due to its versatility and ease of maintenance, the Mi-17 is one of the most popular Russian helicopters for export.

Why India Shouldn't Move Away From the Hindi Script There's no reason for India to let go of its traditional scripts. ?....Akhilesh Pillalamarri Recently, the Indian news site Scroll.in had an interesting debate on the relative merits of writing the Hindi language in the Roman alphabet instead of the native Devanagari script, triggered by a much derided photograph of Indian politician Rahul Gandhi carrying around notes in Roman Hindi. One author at Scroll.in, Keshava Guha, argued for Hindi to keep the Devanagari script, a position that I agree with for both reasons of cultural continuity and linguistic utility. Simply put, there is no reason for Hindi-speakers not to use the Devanagari script (this applies to the scripts of other languages as well), even on computers, with the widespread appearance of transliteration software like Google Input, which allows one to type in the Roman alphabet and get that automatically converted to another script (Google Input is now embedded on many websites so one does not even need to switch between tabs). From a historical perspective, using a language's native script adds depth to the language-not only does it record speech, but it provides clues about history, etymology, and meaning. When lost, this depth cannot easily be translated into a new script, with the Roman script being the script of choice for most. Not much Persian literature survived the transi-

tion of the language from using the Pahlavi to Arabic scripts in the 7th century, but in the 1,300 years since then, much literature has been built up in the Perso-Arabic script. It would be foolish to change the Persian script to the Roman or Pahlavi scripts at this point. However, the most important reason Hindi speakers and other linguistic groups should stick with their traditional scripts is that there is already a standardized spelling and written literature in these scripts; and transliteration into a new script would be a long and often arbitrary process especially since the Roman alphabet has only 26 letters. For many languages, switching to the Roman

alphabet would often require extra symbols which requires special computing tools, basically defeating the point of switching from a technological perspective. Most Indian languages have more than 40 sounds and individuals typing in the Roman alphabet transliterate these into the Roman alphabet very arbitrarily, making standardization difficult to enforce. For example, the long a sound (?) is often written out both "a" or "aa." A sound represented by the letter ?, somewhere between the s and sh sounds is ambiguously transcribed in English, leading to confusion on the pronunciation of the common word Sri. Finally, the a letter like t is often used to represent

two separate sounds that are not distinguished in European languages, ? and ?. The only way to get around these problems is to continue to write Hindi with Devanagari, with some exceptions made for transcribing short words and phrases for foreigners. On the other hand, Shoaib Daniyal made the argument that Hindi should switch to the Roman script. At the core of his argument is the contention that since the dawn of the internet and the use of English as the prestige language in India, more people know the Roman alphabet anyhow or are comfortable using it to write Hindi (or Telugu or Bengali and so on). This is not true. It is true that some Indians,

especially those of educated in elite Englishspeaking schools are basically functionally illiterate in Hindi in the Devanagari script as most of what they read and write is in English. This, however, is their problem and not a problem with the language's script. The elite, in fact, has rather chosen not to learn how to write and read Devanagari well. Underlying this statement is the argument that Devanagari Hindi is backwards and unmodern and that by "clinging to all that is old" like Devanagari, Hindi cannot be revitalized like Turkish.(In an unnecessary move, Turkish switched from the Arabic script to the Roman script in 1928 under Kemal Ataturk's modernization program.) Throughout the 20th century, many Asian languages have undergone changes in their writing systems, often driven by this erroneous belief. A language can be modern or not based on the purposes for which it is used, script notwithstanding. Beyond occasional spelling reforms, the idea that a language's script needs to be changed will only lead to a needless cultural mutilation without any corresponding gain toward economic and social development. There is no particular correlation between the difficulty of a given script and the literacy

rate of its users. Japan, for example, has a near universal literacy rate despite using its traditional script (some slight reforms were made in the 19th and 20th centuries) while Afghanistan, which uses the much simpler Perso-Arabic script, barely maintains 50 percent literacy. The difference comes down to the ability of the state and schools to impart literacy to children through an effective education system. China has managed to attain a high literacy rate despite the Chinese language's use of thousands of characters, a result no different than that in Vietnam, where Vietnamese was formerly written in a variation of the Chinese script but has now switched to a rather strange variation of the Roman alphabet derived from Portuguese orthography. Even China did not need to simplify its script-even places like Taiwan and Hong Kong that continue to use traditional characters have had no problems with education and literacy. The key to modernity is effective mass education which can be imparted in any script as long as the educational system works. Beyond that, the creation of modern scientific and literary content in Asian languages is essential. There is no need to assault millennia-old writing traditions to bring a country and its language into modernity.

Coverage overdose

Sir, The Sheena Bora murder case has hogged media headlines and consequent public attention for the last few days. Indrani was arrested on August 25, just over three years after Sheena went missing, with police claiming that they found specific leads linking her to the murder and disposal of the body. There are also moves afoot to make driver Rai an approver in the case in a bid to nail

both Indrani and Khanna, who have been charged with jointly conspiring to kill Sheena, and then burn and dispose of her body in a remote spot in Raigad district, around 95 kms south of Mumbai. Presently, the trio -- Indrani, Khanna and Rai -- are on extended police custody till September 5, and Indrani has been slapped with an additional charge of attempting to kill Sheena's brother Mikhail Bora. Police are pinning hopes on the crucial DNA tests and forensic analysis reports of the remains of the body believed to be of Sheena recovered last Friday from the spot, which are expected later this week. Many out there feel that the media has on several occasions crossed all limits while covering some stories. The case has received majority of the day's news coverage, for most part of the last week now. Media has pro-actively or in fact hyper-actively gone ahead of the police in locating various people associated with the case, explored all the different angles, and has probed too deep into a woman's personal life. But the only thing that is to be kept in mind is self-restraint to reach at some logical conclusion. Yours etc Rashmi Phukan Duliajan

Sir, Whenever a major, remarkable political event takes place, we find some preposterous and contradictory views aired by the different electronic news channels of Assam. Some such news are aired so oddly dependending upon the owner of the particular news channels' choice that it becomes a travesty of truth. In our opinion a news channel ought to be free from showing anything biased. For instance, in the wake of Himanta Biswa Sarma's joining

Career in Food Processing Introduction Food processing is a modern practice that improves distributional efficiency and enhances the marketing of the food products. It is considered as a branch of food science, where a set of methods and techniques are used to transform raw ingredients into food for safe consumption by humans or animals. Though food processing existed even during prehistoric period, the technology input to enhance preservation of food, flavour, etc and to reduce the toxins in the food product is relatively new and has revolutionised the entire food industry. Step-by-Step Though some jobs in food processing may not require a person to possess specific qualification in food processing, a certificate or diploma definitely adds to the curriculum vitae. The first step to get into food processing industry is to pass 10+2 with physics, chemistry and biology as it is the minimum qualification for most of the courses in food processing. Most colleges offering courses in food processing conduct entrance exams to admit students. Start Early As is true with any other career, it is important to have the right aptitude to make a successful career in food processing. Sincere candidates start preparing for various entrance exams soon after 10th exam. Understanding various requirements of the industry and analysing the aptitude and set of skills necessary to survive in food processing sector is compulsory for any youngster looking to explore the avenue. What would it Cost Me?

Various professional courses in food processing such as BSc in home science or BSc in food technology have high fees structure. The fee usually depends on the kind of institute and its infrastructure. Similarly, specialisation in food processing such as sugar alcohol, bakery, oil, fruits, vegetables, etc requires considerable money. Funding/Scholarship A number of scholarships are available to candidates willing to study food processing in India and abroad. NAARM ICAR Senior Research Fellowship and Ramalingaswami Fellowship are the two major scholarships for candidates willing to study food processing and who wish to do further research. Similarly, Agri Biotech Foundation - ABF PhD Fellowships in Agricultural Biotechnology can be availed which help in funding of education in food processing. SK Patil Loan Scholarships and JN Tata Endowment Scholarships are offered on the merit and requirement basis. Besides the scholarships, a number of financial organisations offer low interest education loan to deserving candidates. Job Prospects Despite the fact that food processing industry in India is at developing stage, it offers exponential career opportunities to trained professionals in food processing as there are nearly 500 million middle and upper class consumers and food processing companies do not want to miss the opportunity. Moreover, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries has ambitious plan to set up more

than 500 food parks across India in every parliamentary constituency so that a real food revolution can be brought about and employment can be generated. With aptitude to work and requisite skills one can find employment in companies, food research laboratories, catering companies, food wholesalers, hospitals, restaurants etc. Higher education and special qualification helps in getting attractive position within the food processing sector. Qualification in home science and specialisations in food technology, nutrition or food services management can help you climb up the ladder in the industry. Similarly, certification in dietetics, applied nutrition, food science and preservation helps candidates advance in career. Pay Packet Food processing industry offers compensation depending upon educational qualification, skills, work experience and contribution in the production process. Location of the food processing unit matters a lot in salary offered to candidates; however, professionals working in food processing units in metro cities earn attractive salaries. An entry level professional can earn salary Rs 8000 - 12,000. Similarly, those with work experience can earn Rs 15,000 25,000. Senior management persons with years of experience behind them can pocket very high salaries. Demand and Supply A significant mismatch in demand and supply of trained professionals in food processing industry implies that there is ample scope for anyone who

Sd/- Executive Officer Rangia Municipal Board wishes to make a career in food industry. With the setting up of new processing units a number of professionals such as bakers, trimmers, fish cutters, slaughterers, meat packers, food batch makers, food cooking machine operators, etc are required in substantial numbers; however, there is dearth of all these professionals. Market Watch Food processing industry in India has a very potent market for consumer food including pasta, breads, cakes, pastries, biscuits, soft drinks, beer, alcohol beverages, corn flakes, ready to eat and ready to cook products, cocoa products, mineral and packaged water, etc. This shows that in coming decades a boom can be expected in the sector with immense demand of trained professionals. The Food Corporation of India requires numerous bacteriologists, toxicologists, professionals trained in packaging technology, organic chemistry, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, etc. Similarly, Modern Food Corporation recruits professionals who can process and market products such as bread, fruit juices, edible oils, soft drink, etc. A number of units of North-Eastern Agricultural Marketing Corporation have come up which require food processing and marketing professionals in large numbers for various positions. International Focus Western countries and the USA have developed food processing units which in fact pioneered the concept of food processing with technological input. Food processing companies based in the US and Europe hire candidates with skills and qualification in food processing technology and students from India for their skills and hard work

can get attractive jobs in various food processing companies in these countries. Different Roles, Different Names Like any industry, food industry too offers varied range of roles and positions to professionals. Research Scientists: Research scientists work towards enhancing yield, flavour, nutritive value, etc. of packaged food so that they have greater acceptance among consumers. Food technologists: The fundamental work of food technologist is to offer techniques for preservation, conservation and processing of food items to be packaged. Additionally, they check the compliance of procedure during the food processing and ensure that there is no contamination and adulteration. Ensuring top quality nutritional value in the food products by putting quality raw materials is an additional job for a food technologist. Engineers: The food processing industry is so broad

that it employs the services of various engineers for planning, designing, improving and maintaining the entire processing system of a unit. Organic Chemists: Qualified professionals in organic chemistry working in food processing industry ensure that there is proper method to convert raw materials to processed food. Biochemists: Looking after the flavour, texture, storage, quality of packaged food products, biochemists ensure that there is nothing the consumers have to complain about. Tips for Getting Hired The expanding food processing sector offers extremely attractive employment opportunities to those who possess technical qualification in food processing. However, there are specific requirements which are needed to get hired from top notch food processing firms. Some tips can be: 1. Early start to study food processing can be beneficial in getting a job at early age and for that one should start preparing for various entrance exams conducted soon after 10+2. 2. Possessing some soft skills such as being conscientious, meticulous, organizational, cleanliness and hygiene focused, prudent and hard working can give edge over rest of candidates. 3. There is no match for technical acumen in food processing; therefore, candidates possessing excellent domain knowledge always have higher employability. Institutes

Despite the fact that it is a new discipline, various universities and institutes in India offer comprehensive range of courses in food process and food technology to students looking for making a career in it. Some of the leading institutes are as follows: o National Sugar Institute: Located in Kanpur, Chennai and Calcutta, it offers internship program in sugar technology and sugar engineering as well as diploma program in industrial fermentation and alcohol technology to candidates. o National Dairy Research Institute: With two centres at Karnal and Bangalore, it offers BSc in quality control in dairy processing and BTech in dairy technology. o MS University, Vadodara o Gujarat and Central Food Technology Research Institute, Mysore o Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Himachal Pradesh o Fruit Technology Institute, Lucknow o Central Institute of Fisheries Education o IGNOU

Two U.S. pharma firms to be acquired by Cipla

New York, Sep 5: To strengthen its base in the U.S. market, India's second largest pharmaceutical company Cipla Ltd., through its U.K.-based subsidiary Cipla EU, has entered into definitive agreements to acquire two U.S.-based companies namely InvaGen Pharmaceuticals Inc., and Exelan Pharmaceuticals Inc. for $550 million (approximately Rs.3,657 crore) in an all-cash deal. The transaction is subject to certain closing conditions. This would be the second landmark acquisition of Cipla in its 80-year history. The first being the acquisition of its South African distribution partner Cipla Medpro South Africa Ltd. in a deal estimated at around $512 million in mid-2013. This acquisition is aimed at provid-

Strong world economies are urged to hike rates by Rajan Ankara, Sep 5: Under pressure back home to cut rates, RBI governor Raghuram Rajan recently said global economies witnessing sustainable growth need to hike rates, although not in a "one go, big bang" manner, and that market volatility concerns should not come in the way of central bank decisions. While Rajan did not name the US, his comments before a grouping of global central bankers and international business community come against the backdrop of the widespread speculation about an imminent rate hike by the US Federal Reserve. Back in India, Rajan is under intense pressure from the government and the industry to further lower the rates, although he has already announced three cuts of 25 basis points each so far in 2015. RBI's next monetary policy review is scheduled on September 29. However, two of his cuts so far this year have been outside the scheduled reviews. "We risk, as central banks, being trapped in a prisoner's dilemma: Nobody wants to be the first to leave this extremely accommodative situation. We prolong a period of extreme monetary accommodation, but without the volatility that eventually has to emerge," Rajan said here at a meeting of B20 on the sidelines of the G20 meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors. Rajan said the economies returning to a sustainable growth path need to begin unwinding their unprecedented monetary policies. (Agencies)

ing Cipla the scale in the U.S. generics market through a wide ranging product portfolio in central nervous system, cardio vascular system, antiinfectives, diabetes as well as other value added generics. The combined revenue from these transactions is over $200 million for the year ended December 2014, and over $225 million in June 2015. "This investment is in line with our strategy to grow Cipla's share in the U.S. pharmaceutical market. We see InvaGen as a strong strategic fit with a relevant diverse portfolio as well as a strong market and customer presence. With a local manufacturing facility, Cipla can further strengthen its presence and commitment to serve patients in the

country," said Subhanu Saxena, Managing Director and Global CEO, Cipla. "We are delighted with the immediate and substantial relevance this combination brings to Cipla in the U.S. We are committed to an orderly transition process with customers and InvaGen to ensure the on-going continuity of a high quality and reliable supply to our customers and their patients," said Tim Crew, CEO, North America and Director of Cipla USA Inc. With the acquisition of InvaGen, Cipla will have a large capacity manufacturing base in Hauppauge, New York and a skilled U.S.-based R&D organisation. This makes Cipla's first such presence in the U.S. This acquisition also provides Cipla with about 40 ap-

proved Abbreviated New Drug Applications (ANDAs), 32 marketed products, and 30 pipeline products, which are expected to be approved over the next four years. They represent a balanced, diversified and growing portfolio targeting highly attractive, large and niche markets, Cipla said. Besides InvaGen has filed five firstto-file products which represent a market size of $8 billion in revenue by 2018. Dosage forms include immediate release, modified release and extended release tablets and capsules, it added. InvaGen has three manufacturing units located in Long Island, New York, with a total production capacity of 12 billion tablets and capsules per annum and about 500 employees. (Agencies)

15% in Rosneft's oilfield in Siberia to be bought by OVL for $1.2 billion New Delhi, Sep 5: ONGC Videsh (OVL) is set to acquire from Russian oil behemoth Rosneft a 15% stake in Vankor oil and gasfield in eastern Siberia for an estimated $1.2 billion, making it the fourth largest acquisition by the overseas investment arm of India's flagship explorer ONGC. Sources said the deal would see OVL get two seats on the board of Vankorneft and 3.3 million tonne of oil per annum. Rosneft would create an operator company that would allow more efficient management of both Vankor field and the company's other licences in this region. The acquisition received approval of top political leadership of both the countries during the July 8 meeting between PM Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of BRICS and SCO summit at the Russian city of Ufa. It is a win-win deal for both the countries and underpins the inherent strength of bilateral relations in spite of New Delhi's markedly visible tilt towards Washington in recent times, including in big-ticket defence deals, For India, the acquisition is one more step towards ensuring the country's energy security

and expands its presence in the oil and gas industry of one of the largest producers outside OPEC.OVL already has a 20% stake in Sakhalin-I project and owns Imperial Energy , which operates fields in the Tomsk region of eastern Siberia. For Russia, the deal makes a statement to the West, which has imposed economic sanctions due to Kremlin's alleged role in Ukraine and annexation of Crimea. It also brings in investment at a time when the Russian economy is under pressure from low oil prices. It also balances out it oil ties in the face of ever-expand-

ing links with China. The degree of importance accorded to the deal by Kremlin was evident from Putin's presence at the signing ceremony at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok on Friday. Rosneft chairman Igor Sechin, considered close to Kremlin, and ONGC Videsh MD N K Verma signed on the dotted lines. The Vankor field is located 130 km west of Igarka in the Turukhansk district of Krasnoyarsk Krai in eastern Siberia, close to the border with Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. 1,287 crore from the stock market while domestic funds net bought stocks worth Rs 1,129 crore. In Friday's market, several bank stocks led the slide with SBI, ICICI Bank and Bank of India touching their 52-week low levels. The slide in the global markets, including India, came despite close of trading on Chinese and Hong Kong markets due to celebrations marking the end of World War II, 70 years ago. Market players said that a strong jobs data from the US will raise chances of an increase in interest rate by

the US Fed in its meeting later in the month -the first time in nearly a decade. That could in turn lead to outflows from emerging markets including India and hence the selling. The weak economic data from China is also another major reason for the current selloff globally, they said. The day's slide also left investors poorer by Rs 2 lakh crore with BSE's market capitalization now at Rs 93.7 lakh crore. Since August 1, net FII outflow from India has been about Rs 21,000 crore, Sebi data showed, and a major part of this outflow was due to these two reasons, China and the anxiety about US Fed's rates decision, brokers said. "Weak cues from the Asian peers alongside with figures showing continuous selling from the foreign investors were weighing on the sentiments on Friday," said Jayant Manglik, president, retail distribution, Religare Securities. "Besides, participants took a cautious approach ahead of US nonfarm payroll data as majority expects further improvement may result in a rake hike by the US Fed in the upcoming policy meet. In line with the benchmark, all the sectoral indices also ended in the red," Manglik said. (Agencies)

Drop in call may lead Trai to pitch for free calls, talk-time New Delhi, Sep 5: Relief may be on its way for the nagging call drops with telecom regulator Trai seeking suggestions for compensating customers for deficient mobile services. Not charging for dropped calls or providing free calling minutes were the suggestions made by the regulator in a consultation paper for which it is seeking comments. "The prob-

lem of call drops in the country appears to have aggravated with the passage of time," Trai said while issuing a 'Consultation Paper on Compensation to the Consumers in the Event of Dropped Calls'. "In the past one year, consumers, at various foray, have raised the issue of call drops, complaining that their experience of making voice calls has deterio-

rated. They contend that they are unable to complete their conversations without their calls getting dropped during the course of a conversation. The consumers seem to be asking a simple question: Having paid for the service, why should I be denied a reasonable call quality?," Trai said. Earlier, even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed concern over the growing incidence of call drops and had asked the telecom ministry to fix the issue promptly. Trai said that independent tests conducted by it in June and July show that call drops are above the prescribed limits in Delhi and Mumbai. "... prima facie, it appears that lack of investment in network infrastructure by the wireless access providers may be one of the main reasons for the problem of call drops." (Agencies)

Mumbai, Sep 5: In a further relief for Nestle India, the Bombay HC recently clarified that five samples each from among the available nine Maggi variants can be sent for lead testing to three laboratories. So the company need not send five samples each from 750 stored cases of these variants as mentioned in an order last month, while lifting the nationwide ban on sale of the two-minute popular snack. There are nine approved variants of Maggi of which six are available for the tests, lawyers said later. Hence the samples to be sent for testing now would be 30 each to three labs. The HC said the tests can be done within six weeks starting September 5. A bench of Justices V M Kanade and B P Colabawalla made this modification to its order. The move came after senior counsel

Iqbal Chagla, appearing for Nestle India, pointed out that the court's intention was for samples from each or available variants to be tested and not from each stored case of the not destroyed noodles. The latter would have result in a huge number of samples. "There are 592 batches in the 750 cases, which would result in 2,960 samples, and for three labs it would mean 8,880 samples to be sent." The company had moved the court after spotting few "typographical errors" in dates and numbers mentioned in the order passed on August 13 when the bench had set aside the June 5, 2015, ban imposed on Maggi sale by Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) as being without following principles of natural justice. The HC, after hearing Chagla and Mahmood Pracha (counsel

for the FSSAI CEO), accepted the clarifications sought by Nestle to the typos and to the provisions of the food safety under which the tests were to be done. The HC had, while allowing Nestle's plea against the ban, however, "in public interest" directed that Maggi samples be sent to three certified laboratories for lead testing and, when found to be within limits, manufacturing could resume. The FSSAI had banned Maggi after 30 samples out of 70-odd were found to have high lead content. Among the "typographical errors" were that the company had issued its press release about withdrawing products on June 5, not June 4 as recorded, and that nine variants have approvals, not eight, and that Maggi Masala Oats is the tenth variant which is pending approval. It began production in August 2009. "Vankor is Rosneft's (and Russia's) second largest field by production and accounts for 4% of Russian production. The daily production from the field is around 442,000 barrels per day of crude oil on an average with OVL's share of daily oil production at about 66,000," OVL said in a statement. (Agencies)

India growth engine of Asia: Immelt New Delhi, Sep 5: With plans for more investments in line with the 'Make In India' initiative, US conglomerate General Electric's chairman Jeff Immelt is headed for India later this month. Describing India as a "growth engine for Asia", Immelt said there is huge manufacturing potential in the country. GE, which has diverse business interests spanning manufacturing to healthcare, is keen to bolster its partnership with India and wants to be part of efforts to make the country a global manufacturing destination. "India is a growth engine for Asia, and we see huge potential for the country in the manufacturing space," Immelt said in a statement. "Infrastructure is a key driver of India's growth. We are keen to invest much more in India and in projects to boost its infrastructure in sectors such as rail, power and healthcare. These efforts will have a ripple effect on the overall economic growth in India and beyond," he said. GE has doubled its investment in the country over the last five years and the group is ensuring that investments and jobs created in India support the `Make in India' initiative, the statement said. Mutual Fund of JPMorgan gave 3 big companies exit route Mumbai, Sep 5: In the runup to JPMorgan Mutual Fund's decision to restrict redemptions in two of its beleaguered schemes late last week, the fund house took in Rs 80 crore from a Gurgaonbased startup and simultaneously allowed redemptions to three large corporate investors. Sources tracking the development said, was done with the full knowledge of the looming troubles in two of its schemes - JPMorgan India Treasury Fund and JPMorgan India Short Term Income Fund - because of the fund house's Rs 200-crore exposure in troubled auto ancillary firm Amtek Auto. Some of these large corporate investors are now mulling legal action against the fund house because of this

favouritism to some entities and ignoring their interests. According to market sources, on August 26, JPMorgan MF got the Gurgaon-based startup, which raised $100 million recently, to invest in its shortterm funds. Soon after, on August 27 and August 28, the fund house allowed three large corporate investors to exit. One of them was a Mumbai-based conglomerate, and the two others based in Bengaluru - an IT major and a pharma company. However, they did not extend the same facility to at least five other large corporates: A large FMCG company, two IT majors' investment companies, a two-wheeler major, and another Mumbaibased shipping company.

Late on August 28, the fund house restricted redemptions from these two schemes to just 1% of its total outstanding units. Thus, nearly crippling exits for its existing investors. On its site, the fund house has not disclosed the portfolio for its India Short Term Income Fund as of August 31, but has given the same for its India Treasury Fund. The consolidated fact sheet for August is also not on its site. Usually, as a good governance practice, most fund houses publish these documents on their site on the first or the second working day of the month. Till August, JP Morgan MF also followed the same practice.Usually, corporates park their short-term money in various instruments that

can give them higher returns and at the same time liquidity so that they can withdraw the funds at a short notice. Liquid and ultra short-term schemes floated by mutual funds are some of the most popular options for corporates to park their surplus funds for the short term. These schemes, in turn, invest in treasury bills and other short-term government papers, highly rated shortterm bonds from corporates and other less risky shortterm instruments. However, in their quest for higher returns, which in turn could attract higher inflows, fund managers at times invest part of their portfolio in slightly lower rated instruments, thus taking some additional risks. US Open: Serena, Cilic survive Paes, Sania suffer scares but no escape for Nadal defeats at US Open New York: Serena Williams and Marin Cilic both survived third round scares on Friday to keep their US Open title defences on track but there was no escape for Rafael Nadal with the twice-winner going down in a late night thriller. A day of riveting high drama began in the early afternoon heat with the ninth seeded Cilic needing over four hours to put away Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin 6-7(5), 7-6(1), 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-1 and ended in the early morning hours with Italian Fabio Fognini winning a pulsating third round slugfest over Nadal 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. In between the two epic battles there was even more suspense as Williams came back to score a 3-6, 7-5, 60 victory over Bethanie Mattek-Sands to keep alive her quest to for a calendar Grand Slam. Williams, who dropped just nine sets, including seven first-set losses, in her charge to the Australian, French and Wimbledon titles, was tested at Flushing Meadows by her fellow American, but roared back to victory to reach the fourth round. "I'm not trying to live on the edge," the 33year-old Williams said.

"I'm playing players that come out really strong. I just think Bethanie played really well." The 21-times Grand Slam singles winner, who is aiming to join Maureen Connolly (1953), Margaret Court (1970) and Steffi Graf (1988) as the only women to sweep the four Grand Slams in a single season, next faces another American Madison Keys. The real fireworks, however, came in the evening as Nadal and Fabio Fognini lit up the New York night with spectacular rallies and winners that had the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd on their feet. "If you want to play against him you want to do something different, you have to risk," said Fognini. The defeat ended eighth-seeded Rafael Nadal's streak of 10 years in a row with at least one Grand Slam singles title after the Spaniard lost in the quarters at the Australian and French Opens, while going down in the second round at Wimbledon. It was Nadal's first Grand Slam defeat after winning the first two sets of a match. The only previous such defeat in his career came in the 2005 Miami finals to Roger Federer. After a week of

punishing heat that saw a record 13 players retire, cooler temperatures returned to Flushing Meadows as top seed Novak Djokovic eased to a third round 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 victory

over Italian Andreas Seppi. It had been a trouble-free visit to New York for Djokovic, the top seeded Serb not dropping a set while losing just 10 games going into his match

Messi, Aguero strike braces as Argentina thump Bolivia Houston: Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero struck two goals apiece in Argentina's 7-0 romp against an out-ofsorts Bolivia while Mexico were held 3-3 by Trinidad & Tobago in friendlies in the United States. A largely second string side, with captain Lionel Messi coming on for the final 20 minutes, took to 12 the number of goals Copa America runners-up Argentina have put past Bolivia in two friendlies this year. Ezequiel Lavezzi also scored two goals while Angel Correa Argentina struck Argentina's seventh on his debut against a Bolivia side under new coach Julio Cesar Baldivieso, who barely had time to prepare them for the match in Houston. Veteran Bolivia defender Ronald Raldes lent the squad $21,000 of his own money to cover the travel costs to the United States for the squad while the Bolivian Football Federation (FBF) is in turmoil over corruption charges against leading officials. FBF president Carlos Chavez signed the agreement for the match to go ahead from prison, where he has been awaiting trial since his arrest in July, before the organisation sacked him, elected new authorities and appointed Baldivieso last week. "I think the result was right given how seriously and

intensely we played with good performances by the debutants and kids who have played little in the team," Argentina coach Gerardo Martino said. Topranked Argentina, warming up for the South American 2018 World Cup qualifiers, play again on Tuesday in Dallas where they meet Mexico, held 3-3 by Trinidad & Tobago in Salt Lake City. Mexico, under interim coach Ricardo

Ferretti, are preparing to meet the United States in next month's playoff for a berth at the 2017 Confederations Cup. Substitute Hector Herrera salvaged a draw when he equalised four minutes from time with a long range shot into the top corner. Striker Jozy Altidore scored twice in the second half, his first from the rebound of his penalty saved by Pedro Gallese, as Juergen Klinsmann's US

side recovered from a goal down to beat Peru 2-1 in Washington. Uruguay, missing suspended strikers Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, beat Panama 1-0 in Panama City with an 82nd minute goal by Cristhian Stuani in Panama City. Honduras won 3-0 against Venezuela, another team preparing for the South American World Cup qualifiers that kick off on October 5. (Agencies)

Sports taught me to compete in right spirit: Tendulkar Coimbatore: Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar said sports taught him to get up on his feet again and compete in the right spirit. "It is not always I went out and succeeded. But there were number of occasions, when I could not do well. But sports taught me to get up on my feet again and compete in the right spirit", he said, in his address to the grand finale of Isha Gramotsvam, a rural sports camp, organised by Isha Foundation, in Coimbatore. "Sports means everything to me and sports taught me

a lot of things in life...to be disciplined and to be focused," he said. "Sports is something, which gives you a reason to smile. It is hence I am smiling in front of you," he said. Noticing that the success of Gramotsavam, in which the rural men and women played sports like volleyball, throwball, kabaddi and pole climbing, Tendulkar suggested to the Foundation to organise such sporting activities in Puttamraju Kandrika, a village in Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, which he had

adopted. "Engaging in sports helps the community to come closer and stay tighter in difficult times. Sports teaches you on team work, which can never fail," he said. "If you apply it in your day to day life, most of the problems will be solved," he said. The former cricketer also shared his love for the game of volleyball and said when he was a child he played the game in his building. Expressing serious concern over increasing diabetes cases in the country, Tendulkar spoke of the need

to make change in lifestyle and habits to become healthier. "We have to change our lifestyle and habits to make the nation healthier and fitter," Tendulkar added. Stating that one should be engaged in outdoor activities of sports to become fitter and healthier, he said that this will take care of one's health. "Once you take care of your health, the nation will also become healthy," he said adding: "I want to see a healthier and fitter India. The fitter you are, more consistent you will be." (Agencies)

against Seppi. But the 25thranked Italian at least made Djokovic work for his spot in the round of 16, the world number one needing a tiring two and a half hours to secure his victory. "Just hanging in there, trying to create my own pace and control the rallies," Djokovic said. "It was a tough three sets. Frenchman Jeremy Chardy provided the upset of the day dispatching seventh seeded David Ferrer 7-6(6), 4-6, 63, 6-1 and the Spaniard was joined at the exit by Canadian 10th seed Milos Raonic who was beaten 62, 7-6(4), 6-3 by Spain's Feliciano Lopez. Venus Williams, who won the second of her two US Open titles 14 years ago, struck a blow for the older set by taming Swiss teen Belinda Bencic 6-3, 6-4. Venus, 35, produced a vintage powergame performance to beat the 18-year-old in a matchup between the oldest and youngest players left in the women's draw. Joining the seven-times Grand Slam singles winner in the fourth round was Russian 13th seed Ekaterina Makarova, who advanced with 6-3, 75 victory over 17th seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine. New York: The Indians had a disappointing outing at the US Open with both Leander Paes and Sania Mirza losing their doubles and mixed doubles matches respectively, in New York, on Friday. Mixed doubles defending champions Sania and Bruno Soares lost 3-6, 3-6 to Czech Republic's Andrea

Hlavackova-Lukasz Kubot in a first round contest lasting 65 minutes. Earlier, Paes and Fernando Verdasco lost their second round match 5-7, 6-4, 3-6 to unseeded American giant-killing pair of Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey. Paes and his Spanish partner Verdasco got the better of Germans Florian Mayer

and Frank Moder 6-2, 63 in the opening round of the men's doubles competition. In the women's doubles, the top-seeded Indo-Swiss pair of Sania and Martina Hingis is scheduled to take on Swiss Timea Bacsinszky and her Taipei partner ChiaJung Chuang in the second round. (Agencies)

Modi vs BCCI: Former IPL chief may move court against ad-hoc body Jaipur: The Board of Control for Cricket in India's decision to form an ad-hoc body in Rajasthan Cricket Association to ensure the state's participation in domestic tournaments may lead to more legal tangles as the Lalit Modi faction in the RCA is planning to move the court against the BCCI. Rajendra Singh Nandu, the secretary of the Nagaur District Cricket Association (which has Lalit Modi as president), said that the BCCI's decision to form an ad-hoc body in RCA is akin to contempt of court. Under the provisions of Sports Act, the sole right to form an ad-hoc body in a state association is with the Registrar of the Cooperative Society and perhaps because of this fact, BCCI had dropped the idea in the previous season despite going through the exercise. "Perhaps BCCI is trying to take advantage of the deadlock between the two warring factions which has resulted in the RCA office being sealed by a court order and players being allowed to participate in the domestic cricket as 'Team Rajasthan' in

the previous season," Nandu said. "The BCCI should not forget that Rajasthan is governed by Sports Act prevailing in state and former IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi was elected as RCA president in the elections with sanctity of the apex court in country. The BCCI also tried to thwart Modi but the high court had cleared him to fight the RCA election in the light of the Sports Act," he added. The BCCI had suspended RCA soon after their elections when Modi was elected as

the president. Later with the alleged backing of some BCCI officials Amin Pathan had removed Lalit Modi from the RCA president's post through a No-Confidence Motion but his claim is still being challenged in court. "They are again making the same mistake because the Sports Act still exists and we are still the elected body of the RCA. Our legal counsel Sudip Hora is already in London and has discussed the BCCI move with Lalit Modi. I believe that we would soon

move the court against BCCI," said Nandu. Apart from this, the players have too filed applications in the high court, one at Jodhpur and one at Jaipur, to pave way for their participation in the coming domestic season. The Rajasthan Bench in the previous season had appointed selectors and a coordinator ordering the participation of players of state as Team Rajasthan and the cricketers are hoping that court would continue with the same arrangement. But with BCCI forming an ad-hoc body in RCA things might get complicated because the premises has been sealed and no facilities are available. In the light of the Sports Act, the RCA's Modi faction would also challenge the ad-hoc body and its powers to run the state cricket. Nandu was instrumental in enabling a piece of land in Nagaur which proved Modi as a resident and climb the ladder through RCA to becoming the BCCI vicepresident and eventually being appointed as the commissioner of the cash-rich IPL. ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup Finals: Chandela wins silver Munich: Young Indian shooter Apurvi Chandela impressed again as she clinched the silver medal in women's 10m air rifle event of the ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup Finals in Munich. The 22year-old Jaipur girl finished second on the podium after she tallied 206.9, just 0.6 behind Ahmadi Elaheh of Iran, who won the gold medal with a tally of 207.5. Andrea Arsovic of Serbia bagged the bronze after prevailing in a shoot-off with Croatia's Valentina Gustin. In the finals, Chandela started on a rousing note as she fired two shots of 10.8 to lead after Series 1 of first competition stage. A total of 30.6 in the second series saw her a drop a place. Thereafter, the Indian managed to remain in contention for a medal. Chandela's final shot was a 10.2, which was just 0.2 less than the eventual winner Ahmadi Elaheh, who shot a 10.4. The reigning Commonwealth Games gold medalist has al-

ready earned the country a quota place for next year's Rio Olympics by claiming the 10m air rifle bronze at the ISSF World Cup (Rifle/Pistol) in Changwon, Korea, in April.

Shooters with 10 best scores in each event of the year's four World Cups are entitled to compete in the finals. London Olympic bronze medallist Gagan

Narang and Gurpreet Singh had earlier reached the finals of their respective events in the tournament, but missed out on medals. (Agencies)

Garo Song on Peace featured in MTV Indies For the first time ever, a Garo song has become a rage in the music world after its airing on the MTV Indies channel, becoming the first ever to feature in any national channel of music. The song by Mikhail Marak speaks for peace, a thought that has bled many hearts of the region. The song was first aired on August 26, 2015 and is presently playing at 8 A.M., 12 noon and 7 P.M. daily on the channel and has left the creator of the song and its video 'Jakgitel - a prayer for peace' very proud. Marak (27) has been an old hand at music and it was events that happened that inspired him to write calling for peace within Garo Hills. "I was deeply hurt with the unrest in Garo hills, which gave birth to the idea of creating a song to appeal for peace", said Mikhal on what inspired him. He completed his post graduation in filmmaking specializing in Audiography from Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, Kolkata. Mikhal pursued his BA in music from St. Anthony's College, Shillong. Currently he is in Tura. He approached MTV Indies in January and as advised by the channel obtained the censor certificate for the song. He submitted the video to MTV Indies in February and was waiting for its telecast with it

finally being aired on August 26. "I was personally hurt and pained at the brutal killing of Josbina Sangma and shooting of a petrol pump worker in Tura last year. I felt that this had to stop somewhere and someone had to take the initiative. Music is a powerful form of expression and a tool that could move heart and soul of all. Why not use it as a mes-

known faces and artists to come for one cause and one song and after meeting different people I managed to get all of them, who had volunteered to work for the project", he said while adding that his friends from the institute helped him shoot and edit the music video. The singers were excited and were willing to come for the cause", added

"best sound design" for an experimental film - "For Children Only". In 2014, Mikhail was selected to represent India at the Asian Film Academy, Busan in South Korea, where he won an award scholarship from Dongseo University for "best teamwork in short film production". He also won "best sound mixing" award for "A Bhadralok's Adventure" at the

sage of love and sing a prayer for peace", he said. He later wrote the song in the form of a poem before composing it. A video for the song was shot last year in December and sung by 16 artists. "I had a dream to get all the well-

Mikhail. He was recently honoured by the directorate of sports and youth affairs Meghalaya for the music video under the category of peace and harmony. Earlier, this year, he won the National Students' Film Award (NSFA) for

7th Filmsaaz 2014 in international category. Presently, he is working on a few Garo single numbers. "I want to showcase the beauty of Garo hills and the vibrant culture of the Garos through music", Mikhail said on his plans for the future.

launch with OML, one of the biggest line-ups ever in our endeavour, to take the festival experience another notch higher," Seth said. Only Much Louder chief executive officer Vijay Nair said, "This is easily the biggest line-up for the weekender that we have ever had. We have been working on putting together a line-up of this scale for months, and I'm proud that the programming of the festival in each of the five cities reflects the true spirit of the festival."
