GST Bill Gets Assam has less to fear from militancy President's Approval, than from criminals of all sort now it’s a law 40 per cent human ET Bureau Guwahati, Sept 8

The much-awaited Goods and Services Tax now becomes a law with President Pranab Mukherjee signing the bill after 16 states ratified it. The government plans to roll out the new indirect tax regime from April 1, 2017. GST, the biggest tax reform since Independence, will create uniform market for seamless movement of goods and services with one tax rate. This is a major step towards rolling out a new indirect tax regime, which the Modi government wants to come into effect from April 1 next year. The passage of the Bill will pave the way for setting up a GST Council that will decide the tax rate, cess and surcharges.

WHAT GST WILL BE FOR CONSUMER? Amalgamating several Central and State taxes into a single tax would mitigate cascading or double taxation, facilitating a common national market The simplicity of the tax should lead to easier administration and enforcement The biggest advantage for consumer would be in terms of a reduction in the overall tax burden on goods, which is currently estimated at 25%30% Free movement of goods from one state to another without stopping at state borders for hours for payment of state tax or entry tax and reduction in paperwork to a large extent
