Congress had 44 MLAs with one seat falling vacant after former chief minister Kalikho Pul committed suicide on 9 August, while the BJP has 11 members including two Independents.
The development came days after the Congress lost its government in Arunachal Pradesh to BJP-led front NEDA when 43 of its MLAs led by Chief Minister Khandu defected wholesale and merged with the People's Party of Arunachal, just two months after it had regained power.
The status of two Congress MLAs is yet to be decided as they put in their papers before the recent series of political developments that led to the first Tuki government falling in January this year, imposition of President's rule and installation of the late Kalikho Pul government on 19 February for a short span.

This is the second time that the PPA will be a member of the NEDA after its earlier membership was cut short by the Supreme Court ruling of July 13 last wherein the apex court re-instated the Congress Government in the state thus, dissolving the then PPA Government under the leadership of late Kalikho Pul. Attending a joint legislature party meeting with the newly defected 43 Peoples’ Party of Arunachal (PPA) MLAs, 11 BJP MLAs and two Independents to discuss on ways to co-ordinate between the PPA and the BJP within the framework of NEDA, Sarma, who is also the Health and Education Minister in the BJP Government of Assam, informed that the state BJP legislators along with two independent legislators will extend outside support to the PPA Government.
“
Discussions on proper coordination between BJP and PPA were made where it was decided that BJP would extend outside support to the government along with two Independent members.

Since PPA is an alliance partner of NEDA, a conglomeration of BJP and other regional parties of North East, the government in Arunachal Pradesh will be known as NEDA government –Himanta Biswa Sarma
“Since PPA is an alliance of NEDA, which is a conglomeration of BJP and other regional parties of North East, the government in Arunachal Pradesh will be known as NEDA government,” Sarma added. When asked of BJP’s role in the recent defection of 43 Congress MLAs to the PPA, Sarma while terming the development as ‘indigenous’ asserted that BJP had no role
whatsoever until a request for membership in NEDA was formally sought by Chief Minister Pema Khandu. He instead blamed the lack of developmental agenda under Congress ruled state and said that the Congress party will fall in the state automatically when development process will start under the NDA government at the Centre.

The ‘Ride to Light’ cycling expedition that rode 300 kilometres across Lohit, Dibang and Lower Dibang Valley districts of Arunachal Pradesh this year to provide basic lighting to most remote inhabitants under the Batti Project will get sponsorship from the state government from next year. The consent for sponsorship of the same was made by Chief
Minister Pema Khandu, who is also the Tourism Minister after he was briefed on the subject by Merwyn Coutinho of Batti Project, who claimed that the state’s cycle tourism potential could turn Arunachal as the major hotspot for cycle tourism in the country. Briefing the chief minister, Roing legislator Mutchu Mithi who was also present in the meeting, said that the cycling expedition will help in tourism promotion, which if made into an annual event could turn to a popular event similar to that of
‘Tour De France’, where cyclists from all over the world meet. Also vouching for the idea, Merwyn reasoned that Arunachal has all the ingredients such as beautiful scenery, unexplored cycle routes, pristine forest and intact mega-biodiversity, which if marketed well could be promoted as brand for cycle enthusiast around the world.
