Militants ambush Army Convoy at Pengaree in Tinsukia; 3 killed, 4 injured Laxman Sharma Digboi, Nov 19

Three soldiers belonging to 15 Kumaon Regiment of Indian army based at Pengaree were martyred while another four injured here amidst Pengaree reserve Forest after a group of ULFA(I) and NSCN(K) militants ambushed army convoy at Pengaree while heading towards Digboi near Fasi Bridge in upper Assam in Tinsukia district.

This is the second attack almost in the same place carried out by ULFA (I) at Pengaree in a span of three days. On November 16, a man was killed and two were seriously injured when militants attacked a vehicle on the way to fetch new currency notes for a tea garden for payment of wages to its labourers was fired upon.

On reports that some people are using bank accounts of other individuals to convert black money into new denominations, the state Finance Department today issued an advisory in accordance to the notification of the Government of India. Accordingly, Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe (APST) citizens of Arunachal Pradesh, who are exempted from paying Income Tax under relevant laws, have been cautioned not to allow nonAPSTs to park their money in their accounts. “Such practice will be deemed as illegal and is liable for prosecution”, the notice read. 61% votes polled in by-elections in Assam 72 % votes polled in Arunachal by-poll

An estimated 61 per cent of the electorate exercised their franchise today for byelections to Lakhimpur Parliamentary constituency and Baithalangso Assembly seat in Assam.

"The polling ended peacefully. The overall percentage of voting is 60.93 per cent. Out of this, 60.83 per cent was in Lakhimpur and 65 per cent in Baithalangso," Chief Electoral Officer

Mukesh C Sahu told PTI here. During the polling, eight voting machines were replaced in Lakhimpur constituency, while no EVM was changed in the Assembly constituency, he added. Lakhimpur has a total electorate of 15,11,110 voters, while it is 1,80,203 voters in Baithalanso. Polling began this morning amid tight security and was initially at slow pace with few voters trickling in the early

hours but picked up later during the day. Voting was conducted under strict vigil across both the constituencies. The by-elections to Lakhimpur parliamentary constituency was necessitated as Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal vacated the seat following his election in May last to the state Assembly from Majuli constituency, which falls under this Lok Sabha seat. 5,508 female voters has 81 polling stations of which three - Kibitho, Aphumna and Taflagam - are situated near the international border with China. The highest numbers of electoroate, 955 voters, are in Hayuliang polling station while Malogam polling station has only two.
