In what seems to be a sign of progress in terms of safety norms for automobiles, the Gauhati High Court has barred the sale and launch of some vehicles in Assam. The list affecting close to 140 models includes Maruti Suzuki’s Alto and Swift, the Honda Jazz and Hyundai’s Eon and i10. This is bad news for the auto manufacturers as the market saw a 7% growth in the first 4 months of this FY after two consecutive years of decline. The order came in as a response to PILs filed which suggests that cars sold in Assam must meet Euro NCAP requirements, due to the higher safety requirement in mountainous regions. Cars manufactured in India are now required to meet frontal crash test norms. Previous year NCAP conducted the frontal offset crash test which studies the impact on a smaller area of the front portion of a vehicle and is tougher than the frontal crash test. Many cars in our country like Maruti Alto, Hyundai i10, Ford Figo and Datsun Go failed these tests which are a standard in developed markets. If the ban remains there or not,

Guwahati, Aug 22: KMSS president Akhil Gogoi on Saturday came down heavily on Sarbananda Sonowal alleging that the Union minister has not been able to fight for Assam and its people. ASTRO FOR YOU You are a touchy one. People will rub you the wrong way today. But remember that getting needlessly annoyed will bring nothing but more complications. Contemplate in seclusion about the root cause of the problem. You are likely to get extra passionate and fervent today. If your logic prevails over your heart, things will probably change for better during the course of the day. It is high time that you set into motion the poignant side of your character. Today, you are likely to be rather emotional and sentimental. Your love for performing arts may make you take up lessons in classical music or traditional dance. And much to your delight, your sweetheart will treat you to a surprise candlelit dinner. Today, it is quite possible that you have a presentiment of things that are about to happen. Scarily enough, the premonition may not be too far off the mark. All your senses, especially your sixth sense, are likely to remain highly active today. It is best for you to keep your eyes and ears open to avoid any misunderstanding at work or home. Talk of being busy! It seems like today, you shall take the cake, and perhaps, be the icing on it as well. It is likely that the day is going to be very hectic for you in terms of work and business. You may be engaged in official conversations and dealings. Also, don’t be surprised to find yourself in meetings as you attempt to take stock of your business situation. After such a long and tiring day, it is only normal for you to unwind later in the evening with your sweetheart. You will spend most of today in the company of family and friends. Students may focus on upcoming examinations and will learn to balance study and leisure time, in equal measure. It is a good day to buy real estate. Overall, a day to lie low and let your mind run free in its pursuit of pleasure. Ever heard of the phrase, ‘To stick one’s foot in one’s mouth’? Well, today you might be doing exactly the same, albeit unwittingly. You are likely to invite trouble, especially if some of those heated discussions get out of hand. A legal dispute does not seem unlikely. One can always get an out-of-court settlement, but why go through all that? Just remember to be cautious today in all that you do or say. The crown jewel of your character will be your supreme confidence today. Try to pick up tasks that require herculean efforts, and you shall come close to achieving them. Your nerves and buoyant nature will be infective and also leave people awestruck. Your business may bring you faster growth rates than bacteria today. Moreover, banking transactions will fetch returns exceeding your expectation. Management institutes will value your expertise and experience. All in all, a day when progressions are on the rise. If you are a sports person, you will enjoy both good health and fame, while engineers will mull investing money in new business ventures. But make sure you know what you are doing, a minor slip can cost you a fortune, and you would have realised by now that repenting won’t undo anything. Your social standing may get stronger; people may develop a high opinion about, and your reputation may get a boost too. You may fall in love today! If single, romance colours your day with a rainbow. If married, you may enjoy a quiet but romantic evening with your spouse. Ganesha says that if nothing else, it’s a good time to pour over your photo albums and float in nostalgia.

Gauhati High Court orders CBI inquiry into allegations of corruption against Arunachal CM ET Correspondent Guwahati, Aug 22: In a major setback to the Congress party in the North East, the Gauhati High Court yesterday ordered a CBI inquiry into massive allegations of corruption against Arunachal Pradesh chief minister and congress veteran Nabam Tuki?. The allegations of corruption are related to awarding of contracts to his kith and kin without inviting tenders when Tuki was the state PWD and UD minister. The case relates to a contract for constructing low-cost housing for 'safai karmacharis' for Rs.3,06,06,667.74, another for constructing staff quarters for Manipur entrepreneur Ranjit Meitei generating jobs for others Imphal, Aug.22 (ANI): Youth in Manipur are driven by a burning desire to become financially independent and make it big in life. Forty-fouryear-old Nongmaithem Ranjit Meitei is one such young entrepreneur from the state who is not just generating job opportunities for others, but is working towards protecting environment and promoting sports. In 2012, he set up Malemnaganbi nursery at Kangla Sagomsang Chingkhong Village and started producing Pauwlonia Tree saplings. It is popularly known as China Teak. In a bid to protect environment and make people aware about benefits of planting trees, he started planting other plants like Yongchak, Citrus family, King Chilly and many other varieties. He employs eight to ten workers who are happy for the opportunity to earn a decent living. Kumudini, a worker attached with one of Meitei's businesses, said, "I have been working here for the past two years. I am happily looking after my family." Boyai, a customer, said, "The nursery business is a profitable venture for the unemployed. Also, when we plant more trees it will help protect environment. People can easily get tree saplings from here." Since childhood Ranjit has been a sports enthusiast and has won several medals in national level cycling championships. Meitei, who owns the Malemnaganbi Nursery, said, "Taking up such a work is very beneficial for our state and the country. I am a national level cyclist and had won gold medals in the National Games. Like me, there are a large number of players in the state. After giving up sports, they hardly do much work. If they start doing some work I believe they can do well. This will benefit the country and also save the environment." People like Ranjit are an inspiration for unemployed youth in Manipur and rest of the country to start their own work and generate employment for others. (ANI)
Rs.52,28,038 and one for house keeping and catering service of Arunachal House in Delhi. The exparte order was passed by a division bench comprising acting Chief Justice K Sreedhar Rao and Justice PK Saikia on writ petition (civil) No. 1267/2010. One Nabam Tagam had moved the high court alleging the then PWD and UD minister of nepotism by awarding contracts to his relatives by flouting norms and procedures. Later, when Tagam sought to withdraw the PIL the high court registered it afresh as a suo motu writ petition in the year 2010. The order said that "The favour shown to each of the kith and kin
amounts to distinct and different offences. It is, therefore, directed that the CBI register a case and conduct investigation against the alleged misconducts of respondent number seven (Nabam Tuki)". "The CBI is directed to take the case records and other documents of this case in their custody from the registry of this court for the purpose of investigation," the division bench order said. It also asked the CBI to submit the final report before the jurisdictional special court in Guwahati. The CBI has been directed by the court to file an FIR and submit the final report before the jurisdictional special
court in Guwahati under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The special judge has also been directed to try and dispose of the case in accordance with law. The court passed the order in the absence of the state government's lawyers since the Gauhati High Court Bar Association had indefinitely boycotted the court of the acting chief justice on Tuesday, demanding transfer of all PILs pertaining to the high court's outlying benches from the court of Justice Rao. Arunachal Pradesh government spokespersons refused to comment on the matter, saying they are yet to formally receive a copy of the judgement.

MWCM recommends ban on sale of junk foods in school canteens ET Correspondent New Delhi, Aug 22: An expert committee set up by Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) has recommended ban on sale of junk foods in school canteens in its report submitted to the ministry this week. The New Delhi based Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has been stridently calling for such an action for some time now, under its food safety campaign. “Junk food consumption among school children is a big problem and the recommendations of the committee are in the right direction. Several countries have taken similar measures. The ministry needs to take this forward now,” said Sunita Narain, director general, CSE, responding to the development. The committee, chaired by T. Longvah, director-incharge, National Institute
of Nutrition, Hyderabad, was asked to look into the issues related to growing problems of obesity in children and its relationship with consumption of junk food. In its report, the committee expressed its concern on rising childhood obesity, diabetes and hypertension and reviewed how junk food is regulated across several countries and the available legislative and institutional frameworks in India. The committee suggested not permitting sale of junk foods within 200 meters of the school during school hours by vendors, and by shops and at restaurants to children in school uniform. It further suggested a list of desirable food items to be offered in school canteens. “CSE welcomes the recommendations of the committee. The government must act on it now. Banning junk food in schools and near-by,
formulating school canteen guidelines and appropriate labeling regulations are some of the necessary steps. CSE has been pushing for such comprehensive set of regulatory initiatives for stricter control on availability and exposure among school children,” said Chandra Bhushan, deputy director general, CSE. The report recommends on establishment and management of school canteens, modifications required in the labeling of pre-packaged foods and the need for promotion campaigns to be undertaken by several stakeholder ministries. It suggests inclusion of nutrition related aspects in the school health card, and renaming the School Health Programme to School Health and Nutrition Programme. CSE, in 2012, had tested and found high levels of salt, sugar and fat
KADDC dissolved, Khorsing’s loyalist given charge Sushanta Roy Diphu, Aug 22: Acting as per the directives of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (AICC) the existing Karbi Anglong District Congress Committee (KACCI) led by in charge president Pran Kumar Dutta was dissolved yesterday and Mongol Sing Timung loyal to Khorsing Engti, Hill Areas Development Minister was appointed as coordinator of KADCC until an elected body is constituted. This political development has practically torn the KADCC into two parts, one committed to MP Birensing Engti and the other dedicated to Khorsing Engti. Necessarily, the latter who
has secured his clasp on the Executive Committee of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council through his Machiavellian policy since last decade is the uncrowned boss of the KADCC now. Meanwhile the activists of the divided Bokajan and Diphu sub divisional committee have taken opposite stance since Birensing Engti who himself was an aspirant for the coveted post failed to take the position and retain his bastion. He has also failed to usher in Roton Engti MAC (Member of Autonomous Council) of Duar Bagori Roton Engti for the post as majority of the elected and nominated MACs of
KAAC supported Mongol Sing Timung ahead of the AICC. Loyalists of Khorsing Engti are taking pleasure in their pristine triumph over the Birensing Engti faction. However amid all these political development a section of veteran Congress leaders are considering the factional rivalry in the light of it being fatal for the party that too when the legislative assembly election is at hand; in their view the contention will only do good to BJP which is consolidating position with the help of top Congress leaders who have shifted planks in favour of the saffron party.

will only get clear in the next hearing which i on August 27. In response, transport authorities have asked dealers to stop selling cars that don’t meet crash-test norms, leading to an nearly blanket ban on the sale and registration of new vehicles in
Assam. However, what is interesting to note is that SUVs remain unaffected by this order, with no questions being raised on their safety or structural integrity. Major carmakers are astonished by the decision, and they are trying to resolve it through the Society of Indian Automobile Association (SIAM) as they
are facing several issues in the Northeast markets after the court order. Just so you know, cars in India are required to pass the frontal crash test norms which is also known as steering impact test to be able to manufacture and sell cars. There is ambiguity on global crash norms that are now not applicable in India.

Assam flood situation worsens as rains continue unabated Contd. from Page 1
The army has successfully been able to rescue about 1500 people, which includes infants and children. About 177 relief camps have been set up by the state administration. Kokrajhar district has been the worst affected district where around 1,000 hectares of crop land is under water. Due to very heavy rains in the catchment areas of Lakhmipur, Dibrugarh,
Tinsukia, Kokrajhar, Sonitpur and Chirang districts, the levels of the water bodies have risen alarmingly. Also, three national parks including Manas, Kaziranga and Dibru Saikhowa have also been affected due to the floods. As per reports, more than 170 antipoaching camps also came under flood. Not only this, landslides in a few areas have only added to the miseries of the people. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, rainfall
intensity is likely to reduce. However, high alert for many areas in Assam has been issued as the water bodies are way above the danger levels and the situation will not improve even after the reduction in rain. In the last 20 hours, most parts of the state have received very little rain. Flood situation in the state will most likely improve after a period of 48 hours. Till then, residents have been advised to exercise caution and high alert remains for Assam.
Government Moves to Check Rising Onion Prices, But People Still Feel the Pinch Contd. from Page 1 Onion prices have risen unabated in the past few weeks. Wholesale onion prices today touched Rs. 57/kg at Lasalgaon in Maharashtra, Asia's biggest onion market. In Delhi retail prices shot up to Rs. 7580/kg and in Mumbai to Rs. 65/ kg. The Delhi AAP government has set up fair price shops and mobile vans to sell the vegetable at
a subsidised rate. But these stalls often run out of stock leaving many people waiting empty handed in long queues. "Prices of onions have been rising on account of a decline in total production from 189.23 lakh tonnes in 2014-15 as against 194.02 lakh tonnes in 2013-14 i.e. a decrease of 4.79 lakh tonnes," the Consumer Affairs Ministry said in a statement. The shortfall has primarily been on account of adverse
weather conditions, including unseasonal rains which have impacted both the standing and harvested crop at major producing centres, it added. Onion exports fell to 10.86 lakh tonnes in 2014-15, from 13.58 lakh tonnes in the previous year. The Consumer Affairs Secretary will on Monday take stock of the situation with agencies SFAC, NAFED, MMTC and the Delhi government.

gasoline-powered vehicles of similar size and driving performance. Toyota also estimates that its hybrid vehicles have saved approximately 22 million kiloliters of gasoline compared to the amount used by gasolinepowered vehicles of simi-
lar sizes. In the Indian context, 58 million fewer tons of CO2 emissions is about 3.55% of total CO2 emissions in India. 22 million kiloliters of gasoline saved compared to the amount used by gasoline-powered vehicles of similar sizes is around 13.3% of India's annual oil import. Over just the past year, Toyota has
made several new hybrid models available, including the Esquire Hybrid (Japan only), the Lexus RC300h, and the recently launched Sienta Hybrid. Other new hybrid models are just around the corner, such as the Corolla Hybrid and Levin Hybrid (China only) and RAV4 Hybrid. This ongoing roll-out will only con-
tinue, with new hybrid models being added to Toyota's range and sold in more markets than ever before. In India Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) launched the first ever locally manufactured hybrid - Camry Hybrid, in Aug 2013. Globally India is the 9th country and/or region to manufacture Toyota hybrid vehicles.
After the launch of the all new Camry hybrid in May 2015, the popularity of the Camry Hybrid has only grown further. At present Camry Hybrid constitutes more than 80% of the total Camry sales in India (also sold with gasoline engine), testimony to hybrid's growing acceptance in India. (Agencies)

Mapithel Dam water getting contaminated, cattle dies after drinking water Imphal, Aug 22: In a strange development, water released from Mapithel Dam through canals has become quite stinky and some cattle and dogs which drank the stinky water have died. Moreover, some people who used water released from Mapithel Dam are now suffering from skin diseases. On the other hand, people living in the downstream blocked the road leading to the dam site thereby preventing transportation of dam construction materials. The Joint Action Committee for Mapithel Dam Downstream Affected People, Imphal East submitted memorandums to the Chief Minister twice seeking redressal of their grievances by August 20 but to no avail so far, said Y Thoiba, the
JAC's chairman. Earlier, people living in the downstream used to earn their livelihood by quarrying sand, stones and fishing in Thoubal river. However, after the water current was blocked by Mapithel Dam since January 10 this year, many families have been left without any source of income. Now people have been facing extreme hardships as the Government has done nothing to provide alternative sources of livelihood to the dam affected people. People are still apprehensive that the dam may collapse or get breached any time. The Government should carry out a thorough assessment and in case it is established that there are certain risks, the Government should take up nece-
ssary measures to re-settle the downstream people at a safe place. Taking strong exception to the Government's total indifference, the aggrieved people have prohibited transportation of construction materials to the dam site from today, Thoiba said. If the Government still refuses to listen to the woes of the people, the dam's gates would be opened using any
means. The affected people has adopted a collective decision to this effect. It has been 15 days since the water released from the dam through canals became quite stinky. Now people have stopped using the stinky water. The stench is so strong that one finds it hard to go near the canals. Some cattle and pet animals which drank water from the canals have died. Moreover,
stinky water are now suffering from skin diseases, said JAC convenor Th Rabi. Sudden blockage of the river current led to decomposition of foliage and many plants under water and this may be the reason for the water becoming stale and stinky, Rabi conjectured. He also urged the relevant authorities to investigate into the causes of the stale and stinky water at the earliest. Apart from Tumukhong, people of Moirangpurel and other adjoining villages have stopped using water released from the dam. It is strange that the Government still refuses to take up any action when the downstream people are suffering such extreme difficulties, Rabi decried. (Agencies)

carry out such brutality is sufficient to prove that the party does not at all believe in democracy and human rights of the people," she said. After the grenade attack, the BNP government barred the Awami League from filing a case with the police or bringing out a mourning procession, she said. The treasury bench rejected a motion for discussion of the issue in parliament, Hasina said, adding: "BNP members sarcastically blamed me - that I car-
ried those grenades and hurled them at the people.""The BNP's founder and former military ruler Ziaur Rahman was linked with the brutal killing of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975. Similarly, his wife Khaleda Zia and son Tarique Zia were involved in the grenade attack on August 21, 2004," BSS quotes Sheikh Hasina as saying. Tarique, several senior BNP leaders and top
leaders of banned militant outfit Harkat-ul Jihad alIslami Bangladesh (HujiB) are among 52 accused in the two cases filed over the attack.Hasina said with each and every action of the then BNP-Jamaat government it was clear that the BNP intended to kill her and annihilate the Awami League.Sheikh Hasina first placed a wreath at the memorial as the prime minister and then another as the Awami League president.Cabinet members,
the prime minister's advisers, senior leaders of Awami League and the 14-party combine and family members of the martyrs and those injured in the attack were present.A minute of silence was observed and a special munajat was offered seeking the eternal peace of the departed souls.About the ongoing trial of the August 21 grenade attack, the prime minister said the real culprits must be punished. "The criminals must be punished, this trial must be held, or else such incidents will take place continuously."The prime minister said the execution of the verdicts in the war crimes trials had started. "We will remove the stigma from Bangladesh soil by executing all of the verdicts." Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam was present on the dais. After the programme, the prime minister talked to the injured and relatives of those Awami League leaders killed in the grenade attack. The prime minister said the killers of 1971 and 1975; the perpetrators of the grenade attack on August 21, 2004; the perpetrators of the countrywide bomb blasts in 2005 and the culprits of vandalism and atrocities in 2015 were of same ilk". Myanmar ruling party sends message of unity after vote exposes rift Yangon, Aug 22 : Myanmar's ruling party today appealed for unity, saying its ousted party chief would stay 'faithful', after a parliamentary vote exposed a rift in the ruling bloc, amid the biggest political shakeup since the end of military rule. President Thein Sein last week sacked his ambitious rival Shwe Mann before party headquarters were sealed off with police trucks in the middle of the night, sparking worries about Myanmar's first free elections in 25 years set for Nov.8.The November election, seen as a crucial test of the country's reforms, is expected to be won by opposition leader Aung Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy, but she is banned from becoming president under the militarydrafted constitution. Shwe Mann, who has stayed on as the speaker of the lower house, fought back on
Thursday, when his supporters across the political spectrum rejected a controversial bill that could have led to his impeachment. The vote underscored the former general's sway among rankand-file lawmakers and exposed divisions in the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party, who's regular MPs were angered by the way in which Shwe Mann was removed from the leadership."I understand
Tianjin strives to go back to normal after deadly blasts Tianjin, Aug 22: The north China port of Tianjin is getting back to normal after last Wednesday's explosions. The cleanup operation at the core area of the explosions is progressing, Wang Hongjiang, vice mayor of the north China municipality, told a conference today afternoon. So far, 200 tonnes of sodium cyanide has been collected and removed from the site and the focus will now shift to metallic sodium and magnesium. Over 3,000 tonnes of polluted water from the core blast area have been removed from the area and treated, Wang said. The water supply was cut off immediately after the explosions to ensure that tap water remained unaffected and sewage pipes were blocked."Contamination at the core blast area is now under control, and the surrounding area is safe," the vice mayor confirmed.Cyanide levels in samples from rivers and offshore were below toxic levels. Air quality in the area is no different from that reported across the municipality, said Deng Xiaowen, head of the city environment monitoring center.Deng dismissed the huge number of dead fish along the banks of the Haihe River to oxygen deficiency rather than poisoning.Tianjin has conducted safety audits of 275 companies since the explosions, 70 of which were found to have safety problems and have had their operations suspended, according to the head of Binhai New Area, Zhang Yong. The blasts have affected 17,000 households to varying degrees, leaving at least 6,300 in temporary housing. Only around 100 people are still staying in the temporary shelter now.The train station from downtown Tianjin was destroyed in the blasts, and rebuilding cannot start immediately. Shuttle buses will be used until the train service resumes, perhaps in early October. With the new semester approaching, schools near to the blast site will not delay their opening, Zhang said, adding checks and repairs to school buildings will ensure the safety of the students. Zhang said that 365 enterprises registered in the district from Aug. 13 to 20, 17 of which are foreign-funded enterprises. The government will help the affected companies in the blasts to resume production as soon as possible, he said. Initial estimates say the blasts have affected 1,700 enterprises. (Agencies)
there are some people in our party who prefer Shwe Mann and are disappointed about the way this happened," Tin Naing Thein, USDP's new secretary general, told reporters at party headquarters in the capital, Naypyitaw."All of us are colleagues who have worked together for many years," he added. "So even if the leadership changes, I believe we are still united."Under the recall bill
opposed by Shwe Mann and Suu Kyi, lawmakers would lose their seats if 1 percent of constituents signed a petition to recall them and the election commission found the complaint against them justified. In a rare close vote on Thursday, lawmakers postponed the discussion on the bill until the next session of parliament, which will come after the November election. Shwe Mann has openly voiced his presidential ambitions and has forged a close relationship with the charismatic Nobel laureate. The two last met after Shwe Mann's ouster, right before the reopening of parliament this week.Asked whether he was worried about Shwe Mann's next steps, Tin Naing Thein said, "We are not worried about his response at all. We believe that he's a trustworthy person.""This man will be faithful to his country and his party." (Agencies)

Dhaka, Aug 22: A leader of a faction of the Awami Olama League was stabbed at the national mosque in the capital after Jumma prayers yesterday. Ilias Hossain Bin Helali, president of one of the Awami Olama League's factions, was stabbed twice at the southern gate of Baitul M u k a r r a m Mosque.Witnesses caught the attacker Mujahidul Islam, 20, and handed him over to police. In preliminary questioning, Mujahidul claimed to be a member of banned Islamist extremist outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).Akhter Hossain, joint secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan South Olama League, who witnessed the attack, said: "Just before Jumma prayers, a boy came to me, pointed towards Ilias and asked me whether or not he was Ilias Bin Helali. I said 'yes,' he thanked me and then stood to pray in the row behind us."Because a programme to mark Au-
gust 21 was being held, at which Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was the chief guest, Helali asked his associates to remain until after his recitation of the Qur'an.As he made his way out of the national mosque's southern gate, Mujahid handed Ilias his shoes. As he was putting on his shoes, Mujahid stabbed Ilias in the neck and then in the abdomen. Bystanders caught Mujahid red-handed and handed him over to Paltan police. Ilias was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and was shifted toward 102 after undergoing an hour-long operation. He says he would never have guessed that a boy of his appearance could have attempted coldblooded murder.Delwar Hossain, general secretary of the faction, said Ilias may have been attacked for making frequent speeches against Qaumi madrasas and the Jamaat-e-Islami. He said Ilias had received threats in the
Fresh photo, passport copy of Dawood Ibrahim confirm he's still in Pakistan Islamabad, Aug 22: Dawood Ibrahim, the prime accused in the 1993 bomb blasts and wanted in other crimes, has long been on top of the list of India's most wanted criminals. But despite India's claims that the gangster was being housed in Pakistan, the neighboring country has always denied it and cited lack of evidence. That might now change. A telephone bill and a passport form the documentary evidence which indicate that Ibrahim and his family are in Pakistan's port city of Karachi, the report said.Indian security agencies are said to be in possession of a telephone bill issued in the name of Mehjabeen Shaikh, Dawood's wife. The bill mentions D-13, Block 4, Karachi Development Authority, Sch 5, Clifton, as the address, and is issued by the Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited. The passport has a recent image of Dawood, which shows him now to be clean shaven and with a receding hairline. He is said to be 59 years old now. The HT report says that if the meeting
between the two countries' National Security Advisors takes place as scheduled on Monday, India is likely to confront Pakistan with this evidence. However, there are doubts over whether that will happen given reports that the NSA-level talks may not take place after Pakistan said that it wished to speak with Hurriyat leaders ahead of the talks. India has advised Pakistan not to allow its officials to meet separatist leaders in Kashmir as it would "not be in keeping with the spirit" of the understanding reached after the talks in Ufa.While 1993 blasts convict Yakub
China ramping up publicity for upcoming military parade Beijing, Aug 22: China is ramping up publicity for its upcoming massive military parade commemorating the end of World War II, but officials still aren't saying what other countries are taking part .Propaganda officials escorted foreign journalists today on a tour of a military base outside Beijing, where troops are practicing for the Sept. 3 spectacle that will feature 12,000 soldiers and 500 pieces of China's latest military gear .Almost 200 aircraft of about 20 different types will also the part. Reporters observed hundreds of troops in dress uniform and full battle attire engaging in eight hours of daily marching practice along a tarmac strip similar to the avenue they will march down in the heart of Beijing. With officers watching closely, they balanced on one foot before stepping forward on command, then swiveled 90 degrees to march back the way they'd come. China says more than 10 countries from Asia, Europe, Africa, the Americas and Oceana will send contingents to join in, but has so far only identified Russia and Kazakhstan as among them.China insists the parade is about marking
the 70th anniversary of Japan's World War II surrender, remembering the sacrifices of past generations and demonstrating its commitment to future peace."This is not about extending hatred, but about reflecting on history and facing the future," the head trainer of the parade's infantry component, Col. Liu Shijun, told reporters. Despite that, the parade is widely seen as a high-profile display of the People's Liberation Army's fastgrowing capabilities, and comes as China is growing more active in asserting its territorial claims in the South China Sea and the East China Sea. Mujahid is from Araihazar upazila in Narayanganj, where his father Nazrul Islam is the imam of a local mosque, police sources said. (Agencies)
moves have prompted its concerned neighbors to boost their own capabilities, and the U.S. military to renew its commitments to regional allies.China says it has sent invitations to numerous heads of state but thus far only Russian President Vladimir Putin, Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, Egyptian President AbdelFattah al-Sisi and Czech President Milos Zeman have accepted, along with unidentified leaders from Cental Asian states, according to state media.South Korean President Park Geun-hye has said she will attend a ceremony marking the anniversary of victory
over Japan in World War II, but aides says she remains undecided on attending the military parade. Participation is considered problematic because many nations have recently expressed concern over China's aggressive military moves. China has also actively courted international support for its ongoing rivalry with Japan, which many Chinese say has never showed adequate contrition for its brutal World War II invasion of China.China's last such military parade was in 2009 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic. Ethics in Journalism When the news becomes the news Questions of ethics in journalism have been brought to the foreground by several high profile cases in recent years. In recent years, blended with advance technology, media has become more powerful than before. It has become a significant driver of growth in economics, socio-economic development, strengthening of democracy and also safeguarding and enriching the cultural, political and social fabric of the Nation. Founded on the pillars of ethical principles, the media sometimes forgets its social obligation and moral rights. Though the Constitution of India has conferred on the Press the Freedom of Speech or the Freedom of Expression vide Article 19(1), at the same time, in Article 19 (2) it provides for reasonable restrictions on exercise of freedom of expression and speech in the interest of common people. So it is not justified to say that absolute rights have been conferred on the media to speak or publish whatever it may choose without shouldering responsibility. Certain prominent events in this connection cannot be omitted without citing them as examples. The event which occurred on the night of July 9, 2012 in Guwahati and which triggered nationwide uproar can hardly be forgotten. A teenage girl after attending a birthday party at a pub in the populated area of Guwahati was manhandled and tortured by a group of 20 to 30 youths. A local news channel "News Live" as its studio was nearby, recorded the shameless incident and broadcast it. The video went viral on the internet after the channel posted it on "YouTube" and it literally shook the nation. The mob molested the girl for more than 30 minutes until passersby and police rescued her. But that channel's reporter and camera person failed to adopt the humane approach and were only interested in ratings. This particular incident evoked strong reaction against the behaviour of the men, who outraged the modesty of the teenage girl and also raised an age-old question about the media, that, should a journalist be a silent observer of such a shameless act? As a result, the editor-in-chief of that particular channel resigned while the reporter also followed suit. On top of that, in the meantime, it was unfortunate that the national media forgot to analyse the unethical side of reporting news whereas it mainly focused on the need to arrest the culprits and failure of law and order situation in Assam. Furthermore, recently, an Assamese news channel has sparked off outrage after it aired a video on how scantily dressed women are creating nuisance on the streets of Guwahati. The video titled "Scantily Clad Girls: A Summer Time Nuisance" was broadcast by a local news channel of Assam. The video showed snippets of young girls and women dressed in shorts and revealing attire. It said that for this section of women fashion means 'exposing'. If that was not derogatory enough, the news channel even compared these women to monkeys, who according to them have better understanding of clothing. Towards the end of the video, the reporter said, "The world has reached Mars and in Guwahati we are still discussing clothing. This is unacceptable." Media is termed as the mirror of Democracy. The tender plant of Democracy flourishes only in an atmosphere where there is free exchange of views and ideas. It not only has moral rights but also moral duty. Moral duty and responsibility are distinct from personal interest. Thus coordination between thought and expression should be based on truthfulness, transparency, objectivity and public accountability - the very ethics of ideal media.
Japanese Encephalitis in NE Alert sounded in Meghalaya Japanese encephalitis is one of the major public health problems under which Assam in particular and Northeast India in general are reeling under. Encephalitis results in inflammation of the brain, affecting the patient's central nervous system that is caused by bacterial or viral infections of the brain, injection of toxic substances or increased complications of an infectious disease. Most of the cases of Japanese encephalitis are found to relate to pediatrics - affecting children between 7 and 12 years (34.2%). Fever (100%), altered sensorium (81.8%), headache (70.6%), neck rigidity (54.0%), abnormal movement (51.3%), exaggerated reflexes (48.1%), restlessness (44.9%), increased muscle tone (35.3%), convulsion (33.7%) and coma (20.9%) are few major symptoms of this fatal disease. The majority of cases (96.3%) were reported from rural areas. House surroundings close to water bodies, rice cultivation, association with pigs, and climatic conditions are environmental factors affecting the abundance of the potential mosquito vectors of the disease. The disease has appeared in sporadic outbreaks or epidemic forms in the Northeastern region, since 1976. Climatic conditions, abundance of potential mosquito vectors, amplifying hosts, agricultural practices and the socio cultural behaviour of the people are conducive to spread of JE in the state. The practices of paddy cultivation, domiciliary surroundings with adjacent water bodies, and high temperature and humidity are the main environmental factors influencing the abundance of the potential mosquito vectors responsible for transmission of the virus in the rural community. The association of pigs as viremic amplifying hosts complements the JE virus activity in such populations. During the rainy summer months of June to August, the incidence of the disease reaches its peak. Detection of JE virus specific IgM antibody is considered a reliable sero-diagnostic criterion of the detection of infection occurring in the state. However, testing facilities for confirmation are very limited in this region. Hence, at peripheral hospitals the clinician must depend on clinical judgment and epidemiological evidence. Meghalaya has sounded an alert for Japanese encephalitis after three people died of the disease and another six were tested positive for the virus. In spite of the fact that the governing bodies of all states have supposedly taken adequate steps as in stopping the occurrence of this deadly disease, none of the states can proudly say that they are successful in averting the occurrence of this disease.
Myanmar's Elections: Jostling for Power Who might emerge from the uncertainty that surrounds Myanmar's upcoming polls? Rajiv Bhatia Myanmar is soon to hold elections for regional/ state assemblies, the national parliament, and the president. Voting for the first two, scheduled for November 8, will influence the third - the election of the president, which may take place in February 2016. Much is at stake, not only for political forces within the country but also for powers elsewhere in the region. The process of conducting free and fair elections and their eventual outcome will very likely influence regional politics. Parliamentary Poll Of the three elections, what really matters in the immediate future is the voting for members of the two houses of parliament. The Upper House has 224 seats and the Lower House has 440. Of these, 25 percent are reserved for the military. Thus, the contest is for a total of 498 seats. Seventythree political parties are in the fray. The principal players are the current ruling party, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), and the main opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), led by opposition icon Aung San Suu Kyi. Other parties will matter mostly in the non-Bamar/ Burman constituencies, where voters may prefer ethnic over national parties. In the Bamar areas, the contest is taking place within the context of a marked ascendancy of narrow Buddhist nationalism. This ensures that perceived threats to the Buddhist nation will be the key concern for many, rather than other issues such as the transition to democracy, the role of the military, political reforms, economic growth, or ethnic reconciliation. As for the outcome, the opposition NLD is widely expected to win a majority of the seats it is permitted to contest. Whether that majority is a landslide or a somewhat less convincing result is uncertain, although the party may be confident given Suu Kyi's continuing charisma and astute cultivation of the Buddhist constituency, along with the unexpected disarray in the USDP. However, a robust performance by the USDP would open the door to smaller parties, who might then be able to participate in coalition-building and the selection of the president. Next President? The parliamentary poll will offer some major clues
for the election of the president, but it will not eliminate all uncertainty. The reason is simple: The NLD has a single recognized leader nationally and internationally, but she - Suu Kyi - is constitutionally barred from being a candidate. Further complicating the calculation is the dramatic ouster last week of Speaker Shwe Mann as chairman of the USDP. As The Diplomat's Shawn
ness to be president again (something Myanmar's system allows him to do), as the nation, in his view, has "very few young people or middle-aged people who could steer the nation in the right direction." Thein Sein would be a strong and safe, if unexciting candidate. Whether his candidacy is a tactical maneuver remains to be seen. It is possible that a candidate acceptable to both the military and USDP will be-
In view of the considerable uncertainty prevailing now, Myanmar's principal partners - China, India, ASEAN, the U.S. - are apparently keeping their options open. In public, of course, regional powers will speak of their commitment to refrain from interfering in the nation's internal affairs, the need to respect the choice of the people, and support for political stability. But do they have their own preferences?
on Myitsone Dam and his pro-U.S. inclinations did not sit well with the new rulers in Beijing. President Xi Jinping has not seen fit to return several visits paid by Thein Sein to China in recent years. The Chinese government has its reservations about Suu Kyi too, and has left it to its embassy in Yangon to cultivate ties with the NLD. These endeavors culminated in an invitation being extended
Crispin explained at the time, Shwe Mann was planning to run for president and could have led a "unity" government with the NLD if neither party won an outright majority. With his removal, the incumbent Thein Sein - who has clearly signaled his interest in a second term - has strengthened his grip on the party. Suu Kyi meanwhile has announced this week an alliance with Shwe Mann, who remains as speaker, although the details remain unclear. So who will prevail? The number of seats obtained by political parties in the parliamentary elections will be a key determinant. Horse-trading among them would be another. A critical factor will be the actions of the military leadership. In all likelihood, its decision and the guaranteed support of the 25 percent of parliament represented by uniformed officers doubling as MPs should settle the outcome. That would seem to favor President Thein Sein. The president will not take part in the parliamentary elections, but he has expressed readi-
come attractive. Who might that be? Shwe Mann remains a possibility. Experts also point to Min Aung Hlaing, the commander-inchief of the Myanmar Armed Forces, or Khin Maung Myint, speaker of the Upper House. The names of one or two outgoing ministers have also surfaced. Finally, NLD supporters talk about the party offering a presidential candidate of its own, with Suu Kyi playing the role of king-maker. Two party leaders - Tin Oo and Win Htein - have been mentioned. At present, neither looks credible; a BBC expert stressed that Tin Oo is "nine months older than the Thai King, and a year younger than Queen Elizabeth." Win Htein is younger, but apparently in poor health. Theoretically, MPs could pick a president from the NLD, but the military is unlikely to accept this scenario. Suu Kyi herself may perhaps prefer to back one of the generals the least unacceptable candidate - in return for the coveted position of speaker. External Stakes
Among the Western powers, the U.S. has been the lead player. Its Myanmar policy has now been managed by realists who have shown some deference to the liberal lobby. President Barack Obama, who had hailed Suu Kyi as "my hero," made a valiant attempt to advise Myanmar that the constitutional ban on her presidential candidacy made little sense and should be removed. But Western liberals' ardor for Suu Kyi's leadership has cooled somewhat due to her silence on the violations of the human rights of Myanmar's Rohingya minority. The U.S. played a significant role in facilitating reconciliation between President Thein Sein and Suu Kyi. Washington is, therefore, likely to support a broad coalition involving these two leaders and the military. China and India China, the major supporter of the junta that governed Myanmar until March 2011, has had several reasons to be unhappy with the Thein Sein government. The president's decision to suspend work
to her to visit China, but only after much delay. Eventually she did visit China and met with Xi. This visit reflected Beijing's recognition that Suu Kyi may well play an important role in Myanmar politics, even if she doesn't become the next president. It also showed China's newfound talent for seeking access to emerging democratic forces. At the same time, Beijing has cultivated close ties with the military leadership. The Chinese would prefer to have a friendlier leader as the next president. Myanmar's other neighbors, India and ASEAN, have consistently supported the reform process, advocating national reconciliation and continued democratization. During Thein Sein's presidency, Myanmar-ASEAN andMyanmar-India relations have become richer and more diversified. India has shown dexterity in strengthening ties with all key players - Thein Sein, Suu Kyi and Shwe Mann. All have visited India within the past three
years. The latest high-level visitor was Commanderin-Chief Min Aung Hlaing, who came to India in July 2015 following unprecedented action by Indian Special Forces against NSCN (K) insurgents on Myanmar soil. The Myanmar government demonstrated considerable maturity in dealing with this delicate matter, and in response the Myanmar commander-in-chief was given a red carpet welcome. During their meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave assurances that India desired to deepen cooperation with Myanmar "in all areas," including security and defense. In this context, India would hope that the coming elections throw up a combination of parties committed to cooperation between the military and pro-democracy forces. In any case, the bottom line is that India would deal with whoever emerges to wield power in Naypyitaw. In discussions on Myanmar's foreign policy, reference is often made to the India-Myanmar-China triangle and how developments in Myanmar in the past two decades have shaped its evolution. India and China will continue to pursue their interests through a complex mix of cooperation, competition and confrontation. Myanmar remains determined not to choose between the two. As President Thein Sein noted recently, China is "a good friend and neighbor" and India is also "a key regional player." Both are "big emerging powers and our country is sandwiched between them. So we need cordial relations with those important neighbors." Prospects Myanmar watchers might vary on their forecasts, but they all are agreed that the nation's politics is extremely complicated and hard to predict. In all probability, the journey towards reform, reconciliation, democracy and development in the years to come will trace a similar path to that seen since the elections in November 2010 - a path with numerous twists and turns. After OIL, It Is Now BCPL Sir, We are not sure if the BJP led NDA at the centre is aware of the fact that the setting up of the Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) is a part of the agreement arrived at by the Central Government and the student leaders in the wake of the Assam movement. This is not to suggest that we can stake a claim for Chairman cum Managing Director's Post for the locals. But when there are deserving persons their case could be considered. Exactly the way, an Assamese deserving officer was sidelined in Oil India Ltd. The shock in the wake of depriving one Assamese lady in OIL is yet to ebb out as the atmosphere is still simmering. Now, to add salt to injury, at the behest of some strong cabinet minister Raj Nath Singh another Assam's deserving contender Deben Buragohain is being deprived of the post, if reports published in a section of the press is anything to go by. It is worthwhile to mention that Mr. Buragohain completed his engineering from IIT Kharagpur in Petroleum technology and Ph.D from Ukraine. He was on deputation from Gas Authority of India Ltd. (GAIL) and posted as Deputy General Manager and under his dynamic monitoring BCPL made much headway. Now that the BJP is guarding up its loin to fight Assembly election of 2016 with its brown study of 'Mission-85' the party should stop hurting the sentiments
of the people. People are not fools to be fooled repeatedly. People want that the dynastic rule of Congress should end. But BJP should not take it for granted, by maintaining a strong lobby of northIndia, sidetracking Rup Sikha Borah Saikia and now Deben Buragohain. Career in Event Management Introduction Events and occasions are an integral part of human life. We simply cannot bypass them as they touch almost all aspects of our social existence. Birthday celebrations, social gatherings, engagements and weddings are events we celebrate at the personal level. During academic years there are school events such as annual day functions, inter and intra school contests, sports day celebrations, followed by college and university level festivals. In the sphere of work, there are annual general meetings, exhibitions, marketing campaigns, conferences, product launches and brand development activities. Other events such as fashion shows, cultural programmes, talent hunt shows, promotional campaigns, religious gatherings and so on also play an important role in our life. And what's more, all of us have been a part of these events from time to time. We either organise these events or take part in one event or the other. Either way we want these occasions to go on as per our expectations and in doing so we often seek professional help. However, we do not pay much heed to the people who assiduously put in their effort and creative talent to make these events memorable and successful. They are the event managers. Event management is a multifaceted activity. Major constituents of this profile include creativity, meticu-
lous planning, relationship management, advertising and marketing and much more, all rolled into one seamlessly choreographed process. Step-by-Step The very basic qualification to get into the realm of event management is to be a graduate in any discipline. However, you must possess certain traits that would help you go a long way in this industry. Essential skills include: " Public Relations: to manage clients, their agents and a vast gamut of professionals you would meet as part of your professional dealings " Creativity: from the germ of the concept to managing an occasion to its final delivery " Marketing skills: to sell your idea to your clients in order to make their events memorable " Analytical ability: you must have the knack to solve all sorts of problems and even have the foresight to anticipate unforeseen issues " Organisational skills: to carefully plan for tasks for self and for the entire team " Networking skills: this industry thrives on the shoulders of personal networking and you must have the ability to utilise it and expand it in your favour " Management skills: ability to manage time, stress, subordinates, clients, budgeting, risks, situations and so on
Institutions that offer event management as a vocational study programme are few and far between. Most of these institutes offer certificate and diploma courses. On the other hand, event management companies prefer candidates who have earned their qualification in allied fields such as a degree or a diploma in Public Relations, Tourism, Hospitality Management, Sales or Marketing. Start Early A creative aptitude and the skill to manage things meticulously are the main ingredients of getting into the event management industry. These skills can easily be honed especially during the academic years. You can start off in this direction by organising school and college events such as skits, quiz contests, cultural meets, annual day functions or sports events. For this, you need to have the acumen to select an appropriate venue for the occasion, visualise the dĂŠcor and the sequence of items as they would unfold in front of the spectators. Further, you must arrange for an assortment of equipment, technicians and artists who would make the occasion successful. A rich experience during these years plays a crucial role when you select event management as your preferred profession later on in life. Is it the right career for me? Like many other career paths, the route to a suc-
cessful occupation in the event management industry is not based on the foundation of academic laurels and certifications. However, the basic survival toolkit to get into this profession is both wide and subjective. Your basic task is to plan and present an event in a novel way and that too from scratch. For this, you must possess the quality to think out of the box. Apart from ample creative juices, you ought to have good planning, marketing, budgeting, negotiation, client management, communication and leadership skills. Further, you must have immense patience and insight to see right into the smallest details of the entire event management process and always stay focused on your project goals. Good networking skills, client management, business analytics, time management, ability to take on challenges, problem solving skills and adjusting to rapidly changing situations are some other qualities essential for this role. The mantra for success in this cutthroat business is to constantly improve upon your existing skills, stick to your career objectives, avoid complacency and always delight your client. What would it Cost Me? A Post-Graduate Diploma in Advertising, Media and Events (PGDAME) from the National Institute of Event Management (NIEM), Mumbai, costs around Rs.1,25,000 approximately,

High power cost makes Raymond's going tough
Ahmedabad, Aug 22: High cost of power has made the going tough for Raymond Ltd's manufacturing unit at Udwada in Valsad, which is one of the largest worsted suitings plants in India. The company has written to Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel expressing concern over viability of the facility due to increased power cost. It has also requested the state government to resolve the issue. As per the government officials, the company may not go ahead with Rs 300 crore expansion plan, which it had planned for its Gujarat unit
Arbitration not best way to resolve tax rows: Revenue Secretary New Delhi, Aug 22: Ahead of an inter-ministerial panel meeting to decide on government joining tax arbitrations like the one initiated by Cairn Energy of the UK, revenue secretary Shaktikanta Das recently said arbitration was not the best way to settle international tax disputes. "The developing countries, including India, feel that arbitration cannot be the best method for dispute resolution. Taxation is the sovereign function of every government," he said, while addressing International Tax Conference organized by the PHD Chamber. (Agencies)
and instead look at Maharashtra for expansion. However, company spokesperson made it clear that there are no such plans. The company is facing problems of higher power cost as it is unable to source power at cheaper rates from open market following curtailment on open access in parts of the state, especially South Gujarat. Open access allows consumers to procure power from independent power producers using government's transmission lines. The consumers have to pay open access charges for the same. The Gujarat government last year de-
cided not to allow open access citing high load on transmission lines. "The power cost has increased by 50% since 2006. The per unit cost in 2006 was Rs 5.40 and it is Rs 8.70 currently. This spike in the power rate has resulted in increased manufacturing cost, "Raymond Ltd spokesperson said in an emailed reply. At present, the power supplied by Gujarat distribution companies' costs around Rs 8.10 per unit, while the cost of power purchased from open market is around Rs 5 per unit. Established in 2006, Raymond's Udwada
plant manufactures 21.4 million meters of worsted suiting fabric per annum and employs 2,500 people mostly of them are from local area. When contacted Saurabh Patel, state energy & petrochemicals minister, he said "From total industrial demand we are allowing around 10% industries to buy power through open access. However in South Gujarat due to heavy grid congestion there is risk of breakdown of normal supply if open access allowed. Government cannot take that risk of blackout as it can affect to normal consumers.'' (Agencies)

Financial sector would witness WhatsApp-like movement: Nilekani Bengaluru, Aug 22: Infosys co-founder and former Aadhaar chairman Nandan Nilekani said that with the emergence of technology advances like payment banks, e-sign, and immediate payment service (IMPS), India's financial sector would witness a WhatsApp-like movement this year. He said IMPS was likely to overtake debit and credit card transactions, with digital payments growing by eight times. Nilekani was speaking at the TiE Leapfrog 2015, a conference organized by The Indus Entrepreneuers (TiE) and focused on entrepreneurial opportunities that emerge from the collision of megatrends - IoT and digital platforms - and existing businesses. He described payments banks as a great piece of innovation from RBI. "The challengers (payment startups) are likely to defeat the incumbent players (banks) in this space," he said. Sachin Bansal, co-founder of e-commerce giant Flipkart, said there was a real possibility of offline retailers in India stopping to grow or disappearing. "India is leapfrogging offline retail," he said. He said Flipkart was experimenting with a new interface that integrated videos, texts and images, to tap into the rural population. Asked about competitor Amazon, he said, "They have a good website." (Agencies)
Govt to provide relief to FIIs on MAT New Delhi, Aug 22: The government is considering providing relief to foreign institutional investors on the issue of levying minimum alternate tax (MAT), a move that is expected to brighten the mood of investors and help stabilize the jittery markets. The latest view on the issue comes after a panel set up by the government backed the idea of providing relief to FIIs. This is being seen as a rethink on the part of the government keeping in view the wider implication on the economy. "The AP Shah committee has favoured providing relief to FIIs on levy of MAT prior to April 1, 2015. The government is favourably considering the issue of providing relief," a government source said but did not elaborate. The move came on a day when the stock market fell sharply and the rupee inched closer to 66 to a dollar, triggering anxiety among policymakers battling with wobbly financial markets for the past few weeks. It will also help blunt investor criticism about policy uncertainty in India. The Centre had set up the high-level panel to examine the issue of MAT on foreign institutional investors (FIIs) in May, after angry foreign investors had protested the tax notices sent to them. Experts said the move is expected to boost foreign investments. (Agencies)
group and have several others in the pipeline. Dickies along with its Indian partner plan to manufacture and sell garments focussing on healthcare, manufacture and mining, hospitality, tactical services and school wear in a phased manner. They will customise apparel based on each client's specification within the framework of the Dickies fabric, construction and performance standards. Dickies, a family owned business with its beginning in Texas, has been in the business of providing specialised and general apparel and related products for 93 years
now. Explaining why they took so long to come to India, Michael Penn, senior vice-president of international sales, worldwide licensing and marketing, Dickies, said: "We spent the last 15 years building our brand in Asia. Given the heavy import duties and other restrictions in India, we took time to find a suitable partner with whom we could share our technology and expertise." Currently, products are being manufactured out of factories in and around Bangalore employing around 15,000 workers. Commenting on the prospects of the healthcare industry
which they are targeting in the first phase, Karthikeya R Reddy, the CEO and Director of ID Overseas said, "We see immense promise in the healthcare industry in India. Great strides in technology, increasing investment in infrastructure along with positive trends in medical tourism will lead to huge growth in the industry." "We have been the leaders for over nine decades because of our strong belief in our values and our workers. We have come to India to deliver our promise of providing apparel that are 'made to work'," said Mike Bennie, president, Dickies, North Americas. (Agencies)
IndiGo, Tata Motors embroiled in court battle Mumbai, Aug 22: Even as the owner of India's biggest and most profitable carrier IndiGo readies to launch its initial public offering (IPO) on Dalal Street, the Gurgaon-based airline is embroiled in a trademark dispute over its name with Tata Motors, which sells its flagship sedans under the same brand. The airline's parent Interglobe Aviation faces an ownership title risk as Tata Motors has claimed that the carrier's use of the IndiGo name is an infringement of its trademark. India's biggest automaker by revenue forayed into sedans under the Indigo brand in 2002 while Interglobe commenced operations in August 2006. Tata Motors issued notices on the Indigo name infringement in 2005 but Interglobe subsequently registered the trademark. The matter is currently pending in the court with Tata Motors opposing Interglobe's four trade names - IndiGo, IndiGo Airways, IndiGo Airlines, and IndiGo Air. An Interglobe spokesperson refused to comment citing Sebi's pre-IPO publicity guidelines. The company in its IPO prospectus states that in the event of a failure to register the trademarks, its business may be adversely impacted. Interestingly, IndiGo is a rival to Tata Motors' sister companies - Tata Singapore Airlines (operator of Vistara) and AirAsia India - which are trying to make a mark in the highly competitive skies. From a single
aircraft, Interglobe, founded by travel entrepreneur Rahul Bhatia and former US Airways chief executive Rakesh Gangwal, had a fleet of 96 aircraft as of April 30, 2015. Its upcoming IPO, expected to value IndiGo airline at $4 billion, is more than five times the current market capitalization of its closest rival, Jet Airways. Tata Motors' sales of Indigo, which is derived from 'India on the go', have been on a decline with the latest figures showing a 28% dip on a month-on-month basis. In the past too, different companies have used simi-
lar names to sell their wares. For instance, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation sells its dairy under the Amul brand while JG Hosiery markets Amul innerwear, which is among the top three brands in its category. "The legal loophole available to most imitators is that a trademark ownership is only valid per category. So if a new firm wants to lift your name in a totally unrelated category in which you are not registered, it does not constitute infringement," said Ramesh Jude Thomas, president, Equitor, a brand consultancy firm. Hyderabad, Aug 22: India has added new customers at the fastest rate for Amazon in its history of operations in multiple countries, said the company's head of international consumer business, Diego Piacentini. India is also the second biggest investment country for the company after the US, he said, adding that India was key to Amazon's future success. Piacentini, who reports to founder Jeff Bezos and is the highest paid executive in the company, said he would be surprised if India was not the second biggest country for Amazon after the US over the next 10 years, given the pace at which it was grow-
ing. The India operations grew by 500% in the number of units shipped last year. "I am an optimistic person but my optimism was not enough. If you told me 27 months back that I am going to sit here and look back at a growth of 500%, year-on-year, I would have said that is not possible," said Piacentini. Amazon's Indian operations were launched just a little over two years ago and the company has been gaining market share over rivals. Some estimate it is already second to Flipkart, and ahead of Snapdeal and Paytm. Last year, Bezos had announced that the company has earmarked more than $2 billion in
funds for investments in India. "We need to look at the long term. The kind of massive infrastructure and partnerships we are building in this country is huge. The US and Europe after some point will have a different growth trajectory," Piacentini said. While bullish on the mobile platform, which accounts for 65% of its traffic, the company said it would serve customers on all platforms, even as it thinks app-first. Rival Flipkart has said it will move to an app-only strategy; its subsidiary Myntra has already become app-only. But Amazon indicated that such a move would be misguided. (Agencies)
Paytm faces KYC challenge with 10 crore clients Mumbai, Aug 22: Following its announcement of having achieved an account base of 10 crore this week digital wallet provider and ecommerce company Patym faces one of its biggest challenges - ensuring that accounts comply with 'know your customer' guidelines. However, the company is hoping that the single window KYC on which financial regulators are working will take shape soon and help resolve the issue. One of the reasons for Paytm's success in getting record number of registrations for its wallet was the simplicity of the process. Registering for a wallet and subsequent recharge of pre-paid mobile phones or direct to home (DTH) services was so seamless that it could be completed in seconds. As a result digital wallet accounts have been created with basic information. After acquiring a large customer base the company is also engaged in
acquiring merchants who will accept payments from the wallet. It has also created its own marketplace which will compete with other e-commerce companies. Now Paytm wants to get into providing investment options for customers and making available credit from lending institutions. However, increasing the level of engagement would require that the company ensures that its ac-
count holders are KYC compliant. A full KYC would remove restrictions on the extent of transactions that can be done by customers. "Right now we are getting around 50,000 accounts KYC compliant every month. Before the end of the year we plan to do half a million a month," said Vijay Shekhar Sharma founder of Paytm and CEO of the holding company. (Agencies)

Sania in Cincinnati semis; Bopanna, Paes bow out
Cincinnati: Sania Mirza was the only Indian left competing in the Western and Southern Open by reaching the semi-finals as Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna were ousted from the men's doubles with their respective partners in Cincinnati. Top seeded Indo-Swiss pair of Sania and Martina Hingis outplayed the American wild cards Christina Mchale and CoCo Vandeweghe 6-4, 6-1 to move to the semi-finals of the $2,701,240 WTA Pre-
mier tournament. They will now fight it out with Taipei pair of Hao-Ching Chan and Yung-Jan Chan for a place in the final. In the ATP Masters event, fifth seed Bopanna and Florin Mergea lost the hard fought quarterfinal 16, 6-1, 12-14 to second seeds Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo. In the other quarter-final, Paes and Stanislas Wawrinka suffered a 6-3, 2-6, 12-14 defeat at the hands of Feliciano Lopez and Max Mirnyi. (Agencies)
Double delight for Yuki as he enters singles semis and doubles final
Vancouver: Yuki Bhambri enjoyed a fruitful day at the $100,000 Odlum Brown Vanopen as he reached the singles semi-final with a hard-fought win over Farrukh Dustov and also made his second consecutive doubles final at the Challenger level in Vancouver. Yuki saved all six break points he faced en route to a close 6-4, 6-4 win in the quarterfinal contest which lasted one hour and 29 minutes. The 23-year-old Indian managed to break his experienced rival from Uzbekistan once each in the two sets and that proved to be crucial in the outcome of the match. It was the second
time that Yuki played Dustov, having lost to the 29-year-old in the 2012 Davis Cup tie on clay. "It was a tough match but I managed to get a break in each set which was important as Dustov has a very good serve. I tried to be aggressive and was able to guess some of his serves," Yuki said after the match. Later in the day, Yuki and his Kiwi partner Michael Venus reached the doubles final when their opponents Marius Copil and Jurgen Melzer handed them a walkover due to latter's shoulder injury. In singles, Yuki next faces Israel's seasoned Pro Dudi Sela. (Agencies)
India regain the initiative after Mathews ton Colombo: India gained an upperhand in the second Test against Sri Lanka by taking a handy 87-run first innings lead despite a fighting century by rival skipper Angelo Mathews in Colombo on Saturday. Resuming at the overnight score of 140 for three, the hosts were cruising along comfortably with Mathews and Lahiru Thirimanne adding 127 runs for the fourth wicket before losing seven wickets for a mere 65 runs on an engrossing third day's play. The hosts were bowled out for 306 shortly after the tea break with leg-spinner Amit Mishra being the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4-43 in 21 overs. Mishra was well complemented by Ishant and
Murray sets up clash against Federer, 'Invincibles' opener Morris dies aged 93 Serena survives Ivanovic scare Cincinnati: Roger Federer and Andy Murray advanced to the semi-finals of the Western & Southern Open in contrasting fashion to set up a rematch of their Wimbledon clash. Federer made quick work of Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in a 63, 6-4 quarter-final romp that lasted just over an hour. Murray needed to grind out another win against Richard Gasquet, outlasting the Frenchman 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 after two hours. Third seed Murray saved a match point in the third set and fought fatigue to win his second straight three-set battle. "I fought and gave everything I had, but thankfully it's just been enough in the last two days," Murray said. Earlier, top seed Novak Djokovic avenged his French Open final loss to Stan Wawrinka by crushing the Swiss 6-4, 6-1. Djokovic, now two wins away from becoming the first player to win all nine ATP Masters titles, needed a mere 63 minutes to dispatch fifth seed Wawrinka in the first meeting between the players since Roland Garros. Wawrinka denied Djokovic a chance to complete a career Grand Slam in Paris but was wayward in Cincinnati, finishing with 33 unforced errors and pushing a backhand wide on match point. Djokovic, a fourtimes runner-up in Cincinnati, broke Wawrinka's serve four times and
dropped just 12 points on serve in his final tune-up event ahead of the U.S. Open which starts Aug. 31. "(My performance) came at the right time against one of my biggest rivals and the guy I lost to last time we played in the finals of the French Open," Djokovic said. "Obviously I approached this match very seriously in trying to prepare myself and get myself in a good position to win." The world number one next faces Ukrainian qualifier Alexandr Dolgopolov, a 64, 6-2 winner over Czech sixth seed Tomas Berdych. Defending champion Serena Williams reached
England limp to 31/1 after following on, at lunch on third day London: England’s openers played cautiously to try to avoid early fall of wickets in their second innings after being asked to follow-on by Australia, but Adam Lyth edged Peter Siddle to the slips a few overs before lunch, to further dent their hopes of mounting a fightback. Earlier in the morning session, Mitchell Johnson wiped out the last two wickets to get them bowled out for 149, 332 runs behind Australia’s 481, and after a steady start to their second innings, ended the
session at 31 for 1. Siddle’s accuracy reflected in his bowling figures — he bowled six overs, five of them maidens, took a wicket in one of them, and gave away a run, in the penultimate ball before lunch. He, however, was hit for a few boundaries by Mark Wood and Moeen Ali; the No. 9 and No. 10 of England in the first innings as they cut, drove and steered through gully and helped England add 42 runs in 8.4 overs. His 13th over cost 12 runs, with three boundaries,
gully, and the last one, a halfvolley, driven handsomely Four fours were smashed in the next two overs, off Marsh and Lyon. Johnson came on, to replace Marsh, and gained the wickets quickly against the run of play. But to be fair, the tail wagging was only a bonus, with the damage already done on day two. (Agencies) Brief scores: Australia : 481 (Smith 143, Warner 85; Finn 3/90); England: 149 (Ali 30, Wood 24; Johnson 3/21) & two of which were calmly 31/1 (Alastair Cook 12*; steered past David Warne at Siddle 1/1)

Ravichandran Ashwin as they turned the tide just when it looked like Sri Lanka were on course of a decent first innings total. With two full days left, India will push for a series leveling win by setting a big target for the hosts on a tricky fifth day P Sara Oval track. The track which has already shown signs of wear and tear with the spinners getting enough turn to make batting difficult on the final two days. India lost first innings centurion KL Rahul in the very first over being bowled by Dhamika Prasad but Murali Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane ensured that there were no further setbacks by taking the score to 70 for one and extending the overall lead to 157 runs.

Williams, who will be chasing a calendar sweep of the four Grand Slams at the Aug. 31-Sept. 13 U.S. Open, struggled with her serve and was forced to come from behind several times in a rematch of last year's final. "She's been number one, she's won a Grand Slam. I knew it was going to be a big test for me today and I'm really happy I was able to get through," Serena said. Ivanovic did
well to contain her opponent's powerful serve, most notably in the first set when she broke three times in four games to pull ahead 5-3 before delivering an incredible backhand winner to hold to love. A topsyturvy second set saw Williams grab the first three games and Ivanovic the next four before the world number one roared back to win the next three. The Serb then grabbed the opening two games of the final set but Williams shifted into a higher gear to win six in a row and advance. The American landed only 31 percent of her first serves in the opening set and 47 percent in the second but was much more efficient in the third, chalking up 68 percent. Up next for Williams will be 14th-seeded Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, a 6-4, 26, 6-0 winner over Czech Lucie Safarova, seeded seven. In Friday's other quarter-finals, thirdseeded Romanian Simona Halep dispatched Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6, 6-2. She will now face a semi-final against Serbian Jelena Jankovic who beat Slovakian qualifier Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-4, 6-2. Halep and Jankovic last squared off in the BNP Paribas Open final in March when Halep prevailed in a three-set battle. (Agencies)
Sydney: Arthur Morris, one of Australia's finest opening batsmen and a key member of Don Bradman's 'Invincibles' side, has died aged 93. Left-hander Morris scored 3,533 runs in 46 Tests at an average of 46.48 and was named in Australia's team of the century in 2000. It was the 1948 tour of England where Morris had his crowning moment, scoring the most runs as the "Invincibles" went unbeaten throughout. The 196 he scored at The Oval, in the fifth and final Test of the Ashes series, was famously overshadowed by Bradman's second ball duck in his farewell innings. Morris was at the non-striker's end when leg-spinner Eric Hollies bowled the Australian great, who needed only four runs to finish with a career batting average of 100. "We have sadly lost a cherished link with our past," Cricket Australia chairman Wally Edwards said in a media release on Saturday. "Arthur Morris was a great man and one of the true greats of Australian cricket who until now had been a treasured connec-
tion to an extraordinary era of the game. When Australia's best openers are discussed his name will always be one of the first mentioned." Morris was the oldest of the two surviving members of the 'Invincibles'. Neil Harvey, 86, another brilliant lefthanded batsman, is the only remaining player from that tour squad. Born in Sydney's renowned beachside suburb of Bondi, Morris was the first batsman to score centuries in both innings of his first class debut as an 18year-old for New South Wales. His international career was stalled by the outbreak of World War Two but after the resumption of cricket in 1946, he made his Test debut against England in Brisbane and would score his first century in the third match of the series in Melbourne. That breakthrough was followed by twin centuries in the next match in Adelaide. Morris, who captained Australia twice, would finish with 12 tons in his career, including an imperious 206 against England in the Adelaide Test of the 1951 series. (Agencies)

Manipuri Film 'Pallepfam' honoured Anshu Jamsenpa to
'Car No 0271' released on August 7 ingredients galore, still it failed to find any popular appeal and had to be withdrawn from most centre after just one week. The initial enthusiasm seems to have vanished. After 'Ahetuk' and 'Anuradha' to
some extent, none of the movies have shown any spark or promise. Audiences have found them extremely boring and amateurish. Film makers have completely failed to communicate with the masses

rector and the distributor, the film was not released. Amitabh Bachchan played a positive character in 'Sonti'. The Assamese audience has missed a good opportunity of watching Amitabh Bachchan portraying a character in an Assamese movie," Eastern Chronicle quoted Dinesh Das, who had also acted in the movie. Actor Nipon Goswami, who was also part of the movie, added, "Sonti's story was based on the novel 'Oliver Twist' or 'The Parish Boy's Progress' by Charles Dickens. It was a story about an orphan boy and his struggle of life. It was a good experience working with Amitabh Bachchan who was then one of the superstars of Bollywood. I will cherish it forever." The unreleased movie, "Sonti", was reportedly an action film that also featured Assamese actors Akhil Deka, Dilip Choudhury, Ila Kakoti and Parag Patra.
