Saffron tsunami hits Assam as BJP and allies knocks Congress out of power Amar Jyoti Borah Guwahati, May 19
Literally a saffron tsunami hit Assam today, as the BJP along with its allies, the AGP and the BPF today managed to win a much expected figure of 86 out of 126 assembly seats in the stat. Though exit polls has predicted a landslide win for the BJP, the congress leadership had all along denied such a victory. The Congress won only 24, AIUDF 14 and independents 2. Several heavyweights including ministers Gautam Roy, Siddique Ahmed, Ajit Singh, Bismita Gogoi, Atwa Munda, Sarat Borkotoky lost the election. The BJP swept the traditional Congress bastions of upper Assam and North bank, and also won seats in the Barak valley, lower Assam, including Muslim dominated areas. The saffron party won all the seats in the upper Assam districts of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, and also won all the seats in the kamrup Metro
district and Nalbari district. Addressing a press conference at Guwahati, BJP CM candidate Sarbananda Sonowal thanked the people of Assam, and said the party will fulfill the aspirations of the people of the state, and also said that all the promises made will be kept. "The big challenges will be sealing the border, infiltration, and unemployment," said Sonowal. Meanwhile, BJP general secretary incharge of Assam, Ram Madhav said it was a significant message for the whole country which has come at an appropriate time. "There was a curiosity about Assam elections across the country. The result is very significant and it is a clear message for the whole country and it has come at the right moment," he told reporters. "Congress is being rejected everywhere in the country and they should draw lessons from this," he said, He said this round of election has its own

significance and it has reflected that Congress "did not learn any lesson from is debacle in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls." "People are still not ready to accept Congress. We have given a call for Congress-mukt Bharat and it seems that people have taken the call very seriously," he said. Madhav said BJP will form the government in Assam under the leadership of Sarbananda
Sonowal and the party is committed to carry forward its development agenda. "We have won the election due to the hard work of our local leadership and workers under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah," he said. After the election results, addressing a Press conference Tarun Gogoi, thanked the
people of Assam, but denied taking retirement from politics. “Winning and losing and ups and downs are part of life, we will be a strong opposition force now,” said Gogoi. The BJP leadership also added that the swearing in ceremony is likely to be held on May 25, and is likely to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and several senior party leaders.

Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has created history by winning all the seven seats in Dibrugarh. The seats which were known as a congress bastion and leaders like Prithivi Majhi and Paban Singh Ghatowar were defeated by the young candidates of BJP. In upper Assam this time BJP had fielded many unknown and fresh faces and all of them showed good results by winning from their respective seats. In Dibrugarh sitting BJP MLA Prashanta Phukan retained his seat for the third time by defeating Chandra Kanta Baruah of the Congress by 27, 374 votes. The BJP supporters were in a jubilant mood bursting crackers outside the counting room in Dibrugarh. "People wanted change. I am happy that eventually we managed to crush the Congress and also managed to puncture the over confidence of communal party like the AIUDF. I want to give the credit to the people of Assam as well as Dibrugarh,’’ Prashanta Phukan told reporters outside the counting hall. in the other constituencies of the district, Rituparna Baruah defeated Prithibi Majhi in Lahowal by a margin of 19, 659 votes, Chakradhar Gogoi of BJP thrashed Congress stalwart

Pic - UB Photo Paban Singh Ghatowar by 16, 231 votes in Moran, Teros Gowala of BJP defeated Dhurba Jyoti Gogoi of Congress by a margin of 17, 086 votes in Duliajan, another fresh and unknown face Bimal Bora thrashed Congress minister Etuwa Munda by 18, 338 votes in Tingkhong, BJP Dibrugarh district President Binod Hazarika defeated another Congress stalwart Raju Sahu by a margin of 30, 754 votes in Chabua and AGP's Naren Sonowal edged out Congress minister Pranati Phukon by a margin of 3, 531 votes in Naharkatia. “Congress has looted us for past 15 years and in the name of development they played with the feelings of people. I hope that the new government will bring
all round development for the people of Assam. In the last 15 years congress rule they drove Assam into backwardness,’’ Rupam Sharma, a resident of Dibrugarh told the Correspondent. However, in Upper Assam it has been quite surprise that the heavy weight leaders like- Paban Singh Ghatowar, Prithibi Majhi, Etuwa Munda, Pranati Phukan and Pradyut Bordoloi have to bite the dust in the hands of comparatively young and unfamiliar BJP candidates. “The heavyweight leaders of Congress were defeated due to their arrogance. It’s a big win for BJP in Assam and in coming days the new government under NDA government will prove by doing developmental works,’’ said a leader of BJP.
Tarun Gogoi who won from the 100 Titabor LAC for the fourth consecutive term and who missed the Chief Minister’s train for his party’s poor performance had sent a special thank message to the people of Titabor who had sent him to Dispur for the fourth term inspite of his busy schedule as a Chief Minister who could not meet or see his people now and then. It was a message sent to his party incharge to Mr. Kumud Kachari through and email. In the mes-
Counting going on in Jorhat. Pic - Nekib Ahmed sage Tarun Gogoi stated that he is sorry but as their party could not do well and it was a big surprise for him after the result output that was declared today, anyway we have lots of works to do and we look forward for
working together for better in coming days, the message stated. Once again I thank my people of Titabor for their love, respect and commitment, as because they have faith on me and they voted me for the power even for the fourth time when a party at the Centre has spent crore and crore of rupees which we being from the Congress could not think to spent the way the BJP did to woo voters. At the same time I also like to special thank to the people of Assam as they have voted for the Congress for which we have begged over 25 seats, stated Tarun Gogoi.
Assembly result to help centre to speed up economic reforms A Staff Reporter Guwahati, May 19
Results of the Assembly Elections in key states including Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam and Kerala, have strengthened Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi who will now be able to speed up economic reforms with help of non-Congress friendly parties like AIADMK and even
Trinamool Congress, ASSOCHAM President, Mr Sunil Kanoria said today. “The NDA Government will certainly find it easier to deal with Trinamool Congress and AIADMK in the Rajya Sabha for passage of crucial bills, mainly the long-pending and the most important, GST (Goods and Services Tax),” said Mr Kanoria.
“At the state level, emphatic return of West Bengal Chief Minister, Ms Mamata Banerjee and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalitha, sends out a clear signal that there is no alternative to the people-centric policies,” said the ASSOCHAM chief.

The results of assembly election 2016 has brought cheers to the saffron - party who bagged 4 out of 5 seats in the district. The highlight of the day was Margherita assembly seat where BJP candidate Bhaskar Sarmah defeated Congress sitting MLA and ex - minsiter by a margin of 20614 and Tinsukia and semblance seat where BJP candidate Sanjay Kishan defeated congress 3-term sitting MLA Rajendra Prasad Singh by 35032 votes. BJP also snatched Digboi seat from congress by a margin of 14308 while BJP candidate Bolin Chetia retained Sadiya seat by 6566 votes. However, Doomdooma assembly seat was one seat which saved the congress face to some extent. Congress
candidate Durga Bhumij defeated BJP sitting MLA Dilip Moran by 788 votes. Earlier in the day, hundreds of BJP supporters gathered outside counting hall and started celebrating BJP victory immediately after the initial trend were out. Supporters, both female after and girls alongwith gents danced to the tune of Dhol expressing their joy. Later, BJP Tinsukia candidate took out a rally and reached BJP office where he thanked his supporters. Fire crackers and distribution of sweet went all throughout the day. It may be noted this is perhaps for the first time in last two decades when anyone won Tinsukia assembly seat with an overwhelming margin of over 35000 votes.

So, how did BJP register
him as CM candidate for Assam since Sonowal is well aware of local issues and has a good image in the state. Resigning from Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Sonowal had joined BJP in the presence of the then BJP National President Nitin Gadkari on 8 February 2011. He has a good image among youth as he has been the president of All Assam Students Union and chairman of North East Students Organisation.
such a landslide victory in Assam Assembly Elections? Here were the five strategies adopted by PM Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah to ensure the party's victory in Assam elections:1-Selection of Sarbananda Sonowal as CM candidate It was a well-thought decision to select Sarbananda Sonowal as the party CM candidate in Assam. However, Sarbananda Sonowal was already working with Modi government at the Centre (as Union Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs), still PM Modi and Shah decided to choose

together.
BPF has been in power in Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) since its inception in 2003.
PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah asked the party workers to focus on local issues and development.
Hence, with this new poll ally, BJP's prospects of coming to power were enhanced.
Infiltration and sealing of India-Bangladesh border were two of the main local issues.
Moreover, BJP broadened its alliance by tying up with AGP too. Notably, AGP and BJP had fought the 2009 Parliamentary elections
BJP chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday too had said that his government's top priorities are infiltration and

sealing India-Bangladesh border. "Issues like infiltration, sealing of the Indo-Bangla border, problems of small tea growers, unemployment -are the major challenges. We will work together (with allies) to resolve these issues," Sonowal had said. 4-'Modi wave': Campaigning by PM Narendra Modi. Sarbananda Sonowal: Man with infectious smile Things you may not know about the next Assam CM IANS New Delhi, May 19: A lowprofile man but always sporting an infectious smile, Sarbananda Sonowalis now all set to be Assam's second tribal chief minister after legendary Jogen Hazarika in the 1970s. The 53-year-old former president of influential All-Assam Students Union, who hails from the Kachari tribe, brings in a unique synthesis of tribal leadership and Hindutva politics in governance-starved Assam. Sonowal's being a tribal suited both the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and BJP in their quest for power beyond river Brahmaputra in the northeast. With his staunch opposition to the illegal migrants from
flocked to the BJP.
Bangaldesh, Sonowal gave legitimacy to the Hindutva politics of a 'north Indian party' among the tribals in the northeast.
These tribals from the plain have a significant presence in upper Assam districts of Jorhat, Golaghat, Sivsagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji.
"BJP was always an accepted political force for upper caste Hindu Assamese, but Sonowal and few others like tea tribe leader Kamakhya Tassa gave BJP new footholds. The election results in Assam today exemplify that paradigm shift and hopefully its a new beginning under Sonowal," says Guwahati-based political analyst Ratnadeep Gupta. It goes to Sonowal's credit that he could deliver Assam to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah in an election where the so-called 'Modi wave' of 2014 was ei-
The fact that BJP has overthrown a government which ruled for 15 years is significant because in 2011 the saffron party was an 'also-ran' with only six seats in the assembly.
ther on the wane or simply non-existent. Trends available so far suggests Sonowal's presence actually helped BJP which portrayed itself as a pro-tribal out-
fit for the first time. This brought in huge dividends. Besides Sonowal's own Kachari tribe, other communities like Moran, Muttock, Tai Ahom, Koch Rajbongshi, Sootea and the Tea tribes too
Delighted by the success, Sonowal attributed it to the "family-like team work" of BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Modi, BJP chief Shah and a new entrant Himanta Biswa Sarma. The alliance BJP worked out
with tribal group Bodo People's Front (BPF) also helped the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Observers feel the basic credit should go to the strategy team which advised BJP leadership to project Sonowal as the chief ministerial candidate and work out an alliance with the Bodo PeopleÂ’s Front (BPF). In the last assembly election, the BPF was in alliance with the Congress. Till end of November 2015, BJP was not sure about the tie-up with the BPF. But Ram Lal, BJPÂ’s organisational general secretary, had said that only such a tie-up will put the BJP on track in Assam. His calculation seemed to have worked
pretty well. This alliance did well across the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts -- BTAD comprising Kokrajhar, Kajolgaon, Udalguri and Baksa districts. The BJP calculation that Bodos can influence results in as many as 25-30 assembly seats in the state also brought in dividends. Significantly, at a later stage the Bodos had decided to extend support to the Gorkhas, Kalitas, Koch-Rajbongshis and Adivasis for ST status. Congress tried an alliance with smaller Bodo group United PeopleÂ’s Party (UPP) but that did not help.

ASSOCHAM has congratulated two of the most influential women leaders in

123-Digboi LAC swept by BJP, lotus replaces the ruling congress after 40 years ET Correspondent Digboi, May 19: Along with the rest of the LACs, Digboi also witnessed a historic change in its political realm following the defeat of Congress at the hands of the BJP by a margin of 14,267 votes after 40 years of its king size rule. In the result of the Assam Assembly Election held on 13th April, declared today, Suren Phukon, the BJP candidate of 123-Digboi LAC got 49,123 votes while Gautam Dhanowar brought only 34,856 votes in his basket. The total number of votes cast in Digboi LAC was 95,458. Similarly, in Margherita too BJP candidate Bhaskar Sharma washed off its heavy weight Congress contender Pradyut Bordoloi and successfully overthrew the congress regime
by securing 76,365 and defeated Bordoloi who secured 53621 with a huge margin of 22,744. Meanwhile, Sanjay Kishan, the BJP candidate from Tinsukia LAC too brought similar tsunami in his constituency and defeated its Congress rival RP Singh with a margin of 35032. Mr. Kishan earned 70,874 votes while the defeated Singh secured 35,842. Saving the humility of the ruling congress, Durga Bhumij has been the only Congress Candidate in Tinsukia District who resisted the BJP tempest and brought victory to congress after he secured 46,938 against his rival BJP Dilip Moran who secured 46,150, thus with a margin of mere 788 votes. Sadiya too came under the grip
of BJP following the victory of Bolin Chetiya defeating Congress Candidate Birinchi Neog with a margin of just 5720 votes. It needs mentioning here that the dynasty rule of Congress collapsed here in Digboi after its 40 years of rule. The Digboi often considered of being congress den during the rule of Rameswar Dhanowar could not resist the BJP tempest and his son Gautam Dhanowar who contested to save his father's constituency was swept away by Suren Phukon. The age old congress asset Rameswar Dhanowar due to his physical ailment could not rise from his sick bed during the election period and thus contributed for the downfall of its reigm in 123 Digboi LAC.
State Assembly Polls: BJP taken over Congress in Karbi Anglong ET Correspondent Bokajan, May 19: With BJP sweeping over Congress in the state, Karbi Anglong too had a fair share of the party's victory as 3 out of 4 seats have been successfully secured by the saffron brigade in the hill district. The district divided into four LAC constituencies viz. 17Bokajan, 18-Howraghat, 19Diphu and 20-Baithalangso went to the polls on April 4; wherein, out of the total 588305 registered voters, an exceptionally high 81.76% came out to vote.
On the other hand, the controversial HAD Minister and INC candidate of 18-Howraghat LAC Sjt. Kharsing Engti who won two consecutive state assembly elections since 2006, faced a narrow defeat at hands of former KAAC CEM and BJP candidate Sjt. Joyram Engleng with a sparse vote difference of 6350 votes. It needs to be mentioned here that Howraghat is the home town to the INC candidate Kharsing Ingti while Joyram Engleng belongs from 20-Baithalangso LAC.
Dr. Numal Momin- a fresh face and the BJP candidate of 17Bokajan (ST) LAC came out victorious by thrashing his INC rival and MP son Sjt. Klengdun Ingti with a stark difference of 4744 votes. Needless to add, Dr. Momin resigned from the post of Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, Guwahati Medical College and joined mainstream politics of late to ensure development of the area and its suburbs which was otherwise in the 15 years of Congress regime.
Another BJP candidate of 19Diphu LAC Sum Ronghangthe once President of Karbi Anglong District Congress Committee (KADCC) and also the Ex CEM of KAAC brought cheers to the saffron brigade in the hill district. Ronghang formally joined the saffron brigade on the first day of February 2016 and was soon considered the party candidate of 19Diphu LAC. Ronghang on this judgement day gave a fitting reply to the INC candidate Bidya Sing Engleng by defeating him with a huge margin of 28336 votes. Reports states
that Ronghang was compelled to leave the INC party because of some moral conflicts with a section of senior party leaders. The INC party which had earlier secured all the four seats of the hill district in the 2011 state assembly elections had to settle for the lone 20Baithalangso LAC. This would however be the 2nd consecutive win of the INC candidate Dr Mansing Rongpi who conquered over his rival BJP candidate and the President of BJP West Karbi Anglong Sjt. Arun Terang. The Congress party which ruled the state for the past 15 years had been wiped out in the people's mandate and the BJPBPF-AGP ally is to form government at Dispur. The peoples of this hill district have voted BJP to power to bring about a change in the government set up and to ensure development of the downtrodden tribal peoples in the district. What remains to be seen is the fact that how far will the party grant priority to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the peoples in days to come.

Imphal, May 19: Flash floods washed away a newly constructed bridge across the Izek river in Tamenglong district of Manipur on Wednesday morning, following torrential rain that hit Manipur and neighbouring states on Tuesday night. Bailey bridge, constructed at a cost of Rs.40 lakh, was yet to be formally inaugurated. The washing away of the bridge has further isolated Tamenglong, which was already cut off from the rest of the state following multiple rockslides triggered by heavy rainfall. Several vehicles were stranded in the district due to the rockslides. Officials said that if the rain continues unabated, the NH 2 linking Manipur to Assam via Nagaland may also be hit by rockslides. The Imphal-Moreh Trans Asian Highway which
suffered major damage recently has yet to be repaired properly. Amid the reports of widespread damage, the Met office has forecast more rain in the coming days and the sky is overcast. The irrigation and flood control department said "All low-lying areas in the four valley districts in Manipur are inundated by the rainwater. Officials and other staff are closely monitoring the situation and flood control material is kept in readiness." The Izek and the Iril rivers are flowing above the danger level, according to officials in Tamenglong district. State Govt to wait for July 7 order Shillong, May 19: The state government will wait till July 7 for the direction of NGT before carrying out auction of coal. From May 15, the transportation of extracted coal was stopped as per the order of NGT. Another direction of NGT was that the remaining 30 lakh metric tonnes of coal, worth Rs 1400 crore, will have to be auctioned by the state government though the miners' body had pleaded for extension of time to pay royalty as well as for transportation of coal. An official source said on Wednesday that the actual assessment of al-
ready extracted coal lying in parts of the state will be assessed by the state government and the same will be intimated to NGT. "We will not immediately start auction as the actual quantity of coal will be intimated to NGT and we will wait for its direction on the next date of hearing on July 7," the official added. According to the official, since the transportation of coal has come to a halt officially from May 15, now it is the duty of government and police to strictly protect the quantity of already extracted coal from being illegally transported. Earlier, the
NGT had allowed payment of royalty till April 15 and the transportation of extracted coal till May 15 after which the State government was entrusted with the task to sell or auction the remaining coal. Asserting that the Congress would play the role of a constructive opposition, Tharoor welcomed the fact that a number of youngsters were elected to the assembly this time. "It's disappointing in many ways. The trends are clear that we would not be forming the government this time. We were trying to make history by upsetting the pattern. For four-and-a-half decade, no government has been re-elected in
Kerala. We had development record of performance on the ground to change that trend," Tharoor told. "The government clearly did not do enough to overcome the media speculation about the scandals. I would have thought that the public would have let the courts judge whether there was any wrongdoing. But the public opinion has worked against the government on this occasion," he added. With the Left Democratic Front (LDF) on track to form the next government in Kerala, Chandy today said win or loss cannot be defined in a democracy, but added that he would analyze the reasons for UDF's poor show. In Kerala, the LDF took the lead and posted victory in 81 seats. UDF has won 16. (ANI)

White House warns Congress on aid restrictions to Pak. to hurt bilateral ties Washington, May 19: The White House has warned Congress that its effort to restrict U S military assistance to Pakistan would hurt bilateral tiesbetween the two nations and unnecessarily complicate progress. The White House in a policy statement sent to Congress on Tuesday said that it appreciated the lawmakers' concerns about the Haqqani network, but disagreed with their move to restrict aid which could complicate ties. The House Armed Services Committee earlier this month endorsed a draft bill that seeks to block $450 million in aid to Islamabad for failing to take action against Afghanistan's militant Haqqani network. The panel through an amendment to the National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA) for 2017, approved $900m for Pakistan from the Coalition

"The Administration objects to section 1212 (of the bill), which would make $450m of CSF to Pakistan ineligible for the Secretary of Defence's waiver authority unless the Secretary provides a certification to the Congressional defence committees," the Dawn quoted the White House as saying. But now, the Congress itself has lost its ideology." Bengal went through six- phase polling beginning from April 4, in a total of 1,961 candidates, including 198 women, contested. Ahead of the elections, it was thought that the Left-Congress alliance would pose a tough challenge to the ruling Trinamool Congress. The Trinamool would organise cultural functions from May 20-30 to thank the 'Maa, Mati, Manush' for their support. (ANI)
Chinese fighter jets intercept US spy plane over South China Sea: Pentagon Washington, May 19: The Pentagon has said that two Chinese fighters have conducted an "unsafe" intercept of a U.S. spy plane in international air space over the South China Sea. "The Department of Defense is reviewing a May 17 intercept of a US maritime patrol reconnaissance aircraft by two tactical aircraft from the People's Republic of China," the Guardian quoted Major Jamie Davis, Pentagon spokesman as saying.
Without giving additional details, he added, "Initial reports characterized the incident as unsafe." Tensions between both nations have turned sour in the South China Sea, where Beijing has been building islets into military bases. China has also asserted sovereignty over large parts of the critical waterway. Washington along with Vietnam and the Philippines claims says Beijing's assertions have no basis in law.(ANI)

EU may impose economic sanctions on Pak over admission of support to terror groups Brussels (Belgium), May 19 : Senior European Union officials are alarmed over statements made by Pakistan Punjab's Law Minister Rana Sanaullah in which he has admitted that Pakistan is involved with terror groups like the Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD) and the Jaish e Mohammad (JeM). The minister made these comments in an interview to the BBC's Urdu Service and they have been extensively reported across Europe and especially in Brussels which recently witnessed horrific terror attacks at the hands of Islamic terrorists. The European Union has been cracking down on militant groups and the comments made by the law minister of Pakistan's Punjab province has both shocked officials and leaders to the point that they have started a "a process to slam economic sanctions on Pakistan " if the
linkage to terror groups as admitted by Rana Sanaullah turn out to be accurate. The EU has asked its representatives in Pakistan to investigate the comments made by Rana Sanaullah questioning "how can you prosecute a group with whom the state itself has been involved with?" These comments once verified and confirmed by the EU's Pakistan representatives will trigger a process by which economic sanctions, including a ban on aviation landing rights, could be imposed on Pakistan. In what is being seen as "immediate and effective" action by European governments, highly placed sources in Brussels said, "Post the Brussels attacks, everything has changed in Europe. Nepal Govt. seemingly in no hurry to name new envoy to India Kathmandu, May 19: Nepal government, who on May 6 recalled its Ambassador to India Deep Kumar Upadhyay,
seems to be in no hurry to name a new envoy to New Delhi, one of the most challenging diplomatic outpost for
Kathmandu. The reasons for the delay reportedly could be finding a candidate acceptable to the major coalition partners CPN-UML, Maoists and RPP-Nepal. Nepal is also not sure if India will agree to the proposed new envoy immediately, reports the Himalayan times. In recent past, India did not send agreemo of two proposed Nepali envoys Chandra Kanta Paudel and Ram Karki. "If India refuses to give agreemo to the new envoy, it will boomerang on India. Therefore, a new
ambassador wouldn't be proposed just because the Indian side would give an agreemo promptly," the Himalayan Times quoted an aide of PrimeMinister K.P Sharma Oli as saying. Meanwhile, Oli's foreign relations expert Gopal Khanal said it would be difficult to send a new envoy to India 'overnight' adding that Oli and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kamal Thapa are of the view that envoy to India should be named before long.
Former foreign and home minister Madhav Prasad Sharma and CPN-UML leader Pradeep Gyawali reportedly are being considered as possible candidates for the ambassadorial post. However, the Oli's aides and foreign ministry officials termed the reports speculative. Khanal added that the government was trying to find an apolitical candidate who could remain and work as envoy in New Delhi, even if the government in Kathmandu changed. (ANI)

Manipuris hope the bus road to Myanmar reopens Successfully test fires Nuclear-capable ballistic missile India once again successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear capable Prithvi-II missile as part of a user trial by the army from a test range at Chandipur in Odisha. The trial of the surface-to-surface missile was carried out from a mobile launcher from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at around 0940 hrs, (Photo:oneworldnews) defence sources said. The twin-engine Prithvi-II is 8.56 metre in length, 1.1 metre in width and weighs 4,600 kg. It has the ability to dodge enemy missiles. The battlefield missile has a flight duration of 483 seconds and a peak altitude of 43.5km. Sources said there was plan for two trials of Prithvi-2 in quick succession. However, after the successful trial of the first one, the second trial was abandoned due to technical problem. A similar twin trial was conducted on October 12, 2009 from the same base where both were successful. With a strike range of 350 km, the Prithvi-II is capable of carrying 500 kg to 1,000 kg of warheads and is thrusted by liquid propulsion twin engines. It uses advanced inertial guidance system with maneuvering trajectory to hit its target. Prithvi-II has been designed to operate with both liquid and solid fuels and is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear payloads. The missile was randomly chosen from the production stock and the entire launch activities were carried out by the specially formed strategic force command (SFC)and monitored by the scientists of Defence Research and Development Organisation ( DRDO) as part of training exercise. The missile trajectory was tracked by DRDO radars, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry stations located along the coast of Odisha. Inducted into Indian armed forces in 2003, the nine-metre-tall, single-stage liquid-fueled Prithvi II is the first missile to be developed by DRDO under India's prestigious IGMDP (Integrated Guided Missile Development Program) and is now a proven technology. Such training launches clearly indicate India's operational readiness to meet any eventuality and also establish the reliability of this deterrent component of India's Strategic arsenal. The last user trial of Prithvi-II was successfully conducted on February 16, 2016 from the same test range in Odisha. Prithvi is India's first indigenously-built ballistic missile. It is one of the five missiles under the country's Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.
Legalised Betting Sports Betting Centre Sikkim, the only state in the country to legalise online sports betting. The online gaming and betting activities were launched as per legislations passed by the state government under the Sikkim Online Gaming (Regulation) Act 2008. The Union home ministry, in April 2014, permitted the Sikkim government to regulate online betting activities as long as other states and Union territories in the country were not affected. The Sikkim venture is the first such initiative in the country, it is hoped that other states will also follow the unique model and legalise online sports betting too. The state has provided three companies with licences to set up establishments for the purpose. The State government has issued the licences to Golden Gaming International Private Limited and two other companies on the condition that betting activities be permitted within the state only through an intranet connection. The State Government of Sikkim has overall authorized 4 gaming and lottery licenses to Sugal & Damani Group, Future Gaming Group and Essel Group's Playwin other than Golden Gaming. In India, only three states are allowed casinos thwy are Goa, Daman and Sikkim. Sports betting on games like cricket, tennis and football and wagering on other games like roulette, teen patti etc. would be offered within the state of Sikkim by Golden Gaming. Other license holders are also expected to follow suit and start offering sports betting in the coming days. Sikkim has the most liberal online gaming laws in the country. The state government has allowed casinos in two hotels, besides online and paper lotteries. The first online lottery in Sikkim was launched in 2001. However, it may be noted that a 39-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh recently hanged himself from a tree near Parliament after he lost crores of rupees on the Indian Premier League and other cricket matches, bringing sports betting back into the spotlight. Last month too the governor of Nagaland has given his assent to "The Nagaland Prohibition of Gambling and Promotion and Regulation of Online Games of Skill Bill, 2015?, which would include card based games like Rummy and Poker, quizzes and strategy games, and virtual sports (including virtual Cricket, virtual racing games) and adventure, virtual stock trading, as well as fantasy leagues. These would be allowed in the state of Nagaland and applicable in territories in India where games of skill are permitted. The implications of this law raised questions about cross state taxation and state-specific jurisdiction with respect to the Internet in India. Moreover it is to be noted that the Lodha Committee report on the BCCI also recommends legalization of betting on sports. Gambling in India is heavily restricted except for selective categories like lotteries and horse racing. In the 21st century, more people have started making cash bets upon prohibited betting and gambling activities in India. The critics of gambling claim that it leads to crime, corruption and money laundering while those in favour of a regulated gambling system in India argue that it can be a huge source of revenue for the state. Casinos in Goa contributed Rs. 135 crores to the state revenue in 2013.

Kulachandra Potsangbam, a food technologist, who has travelled to some cities of Myanmar gushes about that country. "The travel agencies charge about Rs 30,000 per person for a ten-day conducted tour of the cities. The amount is chicken feed considering the sights you get to see." The Indo Myanmar Friendship Association and some others have been organising tours from Manipur to various parts in Myanmar. But here lies the problem. Though the Tulihal airport in Imphal has been upgraded to an international airport, there is no flight to Myanmar except during the odd tourism festival. This means that a tourist from Manipur has to fly to Kolkata and then take another flight to Yangon. The irony is that the distance from Imphal to Namphalong is just 110 kms! And, the tourist misses out on the scenic road trip through mountains and forests besides the boat rides on big rivers. They miss out on the Manipuri temples, villages and the hugely welcoming Manipuri origin people living in Myanmar along the way. Tourists who used to go by bus would halt for a few hours at the picturesque fishing village on the Inle lake which is deceptively similar to Manipur's Loktak lake, the largest fresh water lake in India. They were struck by the differences in the lifestyles and economic

While Manipur was spending Rs 500 crore to clear floating biomass concretions in the Loktak Lake to check pollution, the Myanmarese were protecting concretions and, clearly, benefitting from it. Kulachandra tells NEzine the difference between Inle and Loktak. "At Inle lake, vegetables of the finest quality are grown on commercial scales. Millions of fish are thriving in the lake." Rajkumar Shivachandra, a member of the BJP, has also been there and was stunned by the development. "It will sound incredulous to the people in Manipur but
there is uninterrupted power and potable water supply to the fisher folk of Inle lake. They watch cable television after a day's hard work. They are healthy, immune to water borne diseases." There is a lot of nostalgia about Myanmar in Manipur. At one time there were some 500,000 people of Manipur origin living in Myanmar. Many Manipuris embraced Buddhism after settling down in Myanmar. Thousands of Manipuri girls married Burmese boys. Says S Sundergopal Sharma, "The Manipuris migrated to erstwhile Burma for various reasons. Initially, it was for economic reasons. But many of them
were also taken as prisoners of war by the invaders. Many also fled to Burma to escape the invaders from Assam and China. From lakhs, their population has now dwindled to less than 10,000." People in Manipur are keeping their fingers crossed that the Myanmar Government opens up the bus route again. If that happens, hopefully, the bars in Namphalong would once again open its swinging doors to Indians out for a night of fun, food and mirth. Fresh Turmoil in Nepal-India Relations Nepal's government strikes out at India after rumors of a Delhi-backed attempt to oust the current prime minister. Strained Nepal-India relations, which looked to be heading toward a thaw, faced another jolt earlier this month. The Nepali government abruptly canceled President Bidhya Devi Bhandari's first trip to Delhi, followed by the decision to recall Nepal's ambassador to India, Deep Kumar Upadhyay. India has been criticized for its alleged involvement in the attempts made by some parties to topple the incumbent government in Nepal. Following unexpected moves b y Nepal's government, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly has decided to boycott the International Buddhist Conference that is scheduled to take place from May 19-20 in Kathmandu. After Prime Minister KP Oli visited Delhi in February, Nepal-India relations, which have been tense since Nepal adopted a new constitution in September last year, were heading toward a thaw. The Eminent Persons' Group (EPG), a mechanism formed by both countries, was set to begin reviewing the state of Nepal-India relations and suggest ways to normalize ties. The smooth supply of day-to-
day needs from the Indian side has resumed after last fall's economic embargo. But Nepal's recent decisions to cancel the president's India trip and recall its envoy to Delhi created a crisis of confidence between two countries. Oli apparently believes that India was directly involved in the attempts made to topple his government in the first week of May. Senior leaders of the ruling coalition government who are close to Oli have told the med i a that Ind i a tried to oust their government. "India tried to topple the government, forcing the main opposition party Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba to take the lead in the process," said Bamdev Gautam, a senior leader of the ruling CPNUML, in an interview with Kantipur Daily, the largest selling Nepali-language daily. Ambassador Upadhyay, a senior leader of Nepali Congress, has been blamed for lobbying the Indian establishment to topple the government. However, Upadhyay dismissed the accusations, saying that he does not have the capacity to topple or form the government. India's ambassador to Nepal,
Kamal Dev Bhattarai
Ranjit Rae, has also been accused of being involved in the conspiracy to oust the coalition government of left parties, which is often portrayed as an anti-India coalition. Last week, there were some media reports that Nepal would expel the Indian ambassador for his alleged involvement in the internal affairs of Nepal. Nepal's government has denounced those reports. "Some media speculation regarding [the] Nepali government mulling expulsion of Indian Ambassador Rae is baseless and is aimed at damaging Nepal-India relations," said Minister for Foreign Affairs Kamal Thapa. There is an agreement among political parties in Nepal that India's policy of "micromanaging" its smaller neighbor should not be tolerated. Similarly, all parties in Nepal protested India's tactical support to the border blockade launched by Madhesh-based parties last year. However, the present government's diplomatic dealings have been problematic, especially after the promulgation of the constitution last year. Government officials are straining to show off their nationalist credentials, provoking issues related to relations with neighboring countries.
The CPN-UML-led current government is dominated by leftist and rightists partiesUCPN (Maoist), CPN-ML, Rastriya Janamoarcha, and Rastriya Prajatantra PartyNepal among others-who try to portray themselves as nationalist forces by criticizing India. Even government ministers have been making provocative statements, saying that India is trying to split Nepal's southern belt. Oli believes that India did not want Nepal to form a government under his leadership. He is also of the view that India is not supportive of his government, so he is indulging in antiIndian rhetoric to earn nationalist credentials. India, on the other hand, believes that the current government is working to create anti-Indian sentiment in Nepal. Ironically, Oli had been portrayed as a pro-Indian leader over the previous 25 years. In the third week of February, Oli visited India. At the time, the prime minister claimed that the misunderstanding between the two countries had been cleared after his visit. However, in a sign that all was not well, Nepal and India failed to come up with a joint press statement after India refused to welcome Nepal's constitution. The protests of Madhesh-
based parties over the promulgation of Nepal's new constitution is another issue that is influencing Nepal-India relations. Ethnic groups are protesting in the southern belt, bordering India, demanding the government in Nepal address their concerns about the demarcation of electoral constituencies. India is pressing Nepali parties to address the concerns of Madhesh-based groups. Oli and his cabinet ministers believe that India is interfering in Nepal's internal issues by providing tactical support to protesters. The problem is that Oli seems more interested in political gain than truly forging national unity. Oli has not invested the time and energy to reach out to opposition parties and Madhesh-based groups in order to create an environment of implementing the constitution. Following pressure from opposition parties, Nepal adopted amendments to the constitution, partially fulfilling the protesters' demands. Then, a day before his visit to India, Oli formed a political mechanism led by the deputy prime minister and the minister for foreign affairs to address the remaining demands. The mechanism was made in a hurry to

Sir, We have often heard about the atrocities or misbehavior meted out to the youths of the north - eastern region living in Delhi for which the central government opened a separate police cell with Robin Hibu as the nodal officer in-charge of north-east. But we remain flabbergasted after going through a news item published in certain news papers, the report published suggests that some youths from the north-east are crossing all the limits of sanity by their insane wrong doings such as kissing in the open, young girls wearing mini-scart, scanty apparel, hobnobbing with some foreigners, boozing, drinking, shouting at the top of their voices, challenging those whosoever venture to question them. Particularly, the residents of Munirika and Safdarjung Enclave in south-Delhi are the worst sufferers. The welfare Association of the
give the impression to the Indian political leadership that Oli was serious about resolving the Madhesh crisis. Since he returned from his India visit, there has not been even a single round of negotiation between the government mechanism and Madheshbased parties. There are just 20 months left to fully implement Nepal's constitution, otherwise there will be another constitutional crisis. In this period Nepal will have to hold local, provincial and national elections, which is a very tough job. It won't be possible without unification among the parties. In this sense, Nepal's government is failing to handle both domestic and external issues properly, which is pushing the country toward crisis. Instead of taking a strong and united balancing approach, leaders are providing India and China with room to play in the country's internal political affairs. In addition to the reports that India tried to topple the government, it's rumored that China worked hard to keep the current coalition intact. The lack of unity among Nepal's domestic forces means that diplomacy is becoming a tool for parties to gain domestic political strength. Courtesy: The Diplomat

I personally against the traditional can't understand that if practices and beliefs of India is to ban beef as many Tamilians. Many in favour stock instead of enter-
tainment. As Chennaibased organic farmer and entrepreneur Himakiran Anugula argues: Farmers bring their cattle to be sold in shandies. Brokers take the cattle from the farmers and display them to prospective buyers. These buyers fall into 34 categories: (1) The Jallikattu enthusiast who will buy the bulls and male calves mostly; (2) buyers of oxen for farming/transport; (3) Buyers of cows for breeding and household usage and (4) Beef traders who are mostly if not all agents of export companies and slaughterhouses based in Kerala. Once a ban on Jallikattu is enforced, those belonging to the first category would be non-ex-
istent, and instead, the supply of bulls would most likely be pushed into the fourth category. Naturally, beef traders would purchase all cattle as they are only interested in meat and not really the physical or other potentials of the animal. Legally speaking, while organisations such as PeTA have voiced their concern regarding the treatment of bulls in the sport, others such as the Convention on Biological Diversity and heritage status practices worldwide stated that Jallikattu is customary and a part of an Indian community's ancient traditional practices which are best left intact, but with rules to organise and regulate them to re-
duce cruelty and hazards. Another crucial component in favour of the tradition is the fact that it provides a means of income and livelihood for those involved in supplying the bulls. Anugula writes: If Jallikattu is banned, livestock keepers will be forced to abandon the raising of native livestock, which already stands threatened due to the extensive use of motor pumps, tractors and mechanised agriculture. If the sport is banned, it would be the death knell of native cattle species in Tamil Nadu. Clearly, some significant concerns have been raised against the practice of Jallikattu. However, it's imperative that
India's rare bull-fighting sport, Jallikattu, (Photo: Flicker) those voicing out concerns against cruelty to bulls realise that the animals would probably end up in a slaughterhouse anyway, so why should we consider doing away with the tradition of an Indian community in the name of saving animals that will ultimately not be
saved? Moreover, just as a ban on beef had adverse effects on minority communities in the country, it's only likely that a ban on an indigenous sporting practice among Tamils would not just have setbacks against tradition but will have more complex and long-lasting im-
plications. Lastly, given the nature of prohibitionism in India, I think it makes more sense for the activists to devise cruelty-minimizing methods to playing the sport, rather than banning something altogether if it wants immediate and feasible change. Courtesy: Youthkiawaaz

(Photo: khabarindia) ANI New Delhi, May 19 : Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emerged as a global leader, and added that developing nations across the world consider him to be their role model. In an exclusive interview, Pradhan said that nations across the world, have great expectations from the Prime Minister. "He is a leader from grass root level. He considers himself as a servitor of the nation. His knowledge on the subjects, issues, and above all his sensitiveness is the forte of Narendra Modi. Many nations across the world, see PM Modi with expectations and developing nations consider him as a role model," Pradhan said. Giving an example from the Prime Minister's COP-21 visit in Paris last
year, Pradhan said: "Definitely. I would like to give an example. India is a less pollutant nation. When the world leaders gathered at COP-21 in Paris, no one would have objected if we won't take any responsibility. But, at that time, Modi didn't speak of only India. He expressed concern over the world environment. Keeping in mind the Global Concern, he targeted to reduce carbon emission by 30 to 35 per cent by 2030 in India." "PM Modi launched International Solar Alliance, as many small islands will be affected due to global warming. He expressed their concern, as these small island nations couldn't put their grievances at global arena. This shows that PM Modi works with sensitivity. People across the world have started recognizing him," he added.

TRAVEL & TOURISM Famous temples of Northeastern India Northeast India is a favorite destination for tourists from the country and abroad. However, it would be wrong to assume that tourists throng these beautiful hilly states only for exotic culinary delights and amazing biodiversity hotspots. These states are also visited by the tourists for several pilgrimage destinations. There are plenty of famous temples in states like Assam, Tripura and Manipur that have ancient myths and legends associated with them. These temples are visited by thousands of religiously inclined visitors. Below listed are some of the eminent temples of the Northeast region. Kirateshwar Mahadev Temple (Sikkim) Sikkim is a state where the domain religion is Buddhism. However, there is a fair percentage of Hindus in the population of the state. This is why a number of iconic temples have been set up in Sikkim. One of the most famous temples in
Sikkim is the Kirateshwar Mahadev temple. Located on side of River Rangeet in Legship, this temple is visited by several thousand pilgrims around the year. The legend of the temple is associated with Arjuna and Shiva. As per the myth, Lord Shiva blessed the third Pandava for win in war at the spot, in guise of a hunter. There is a dharamshala at temple premises for pilgrims. The temple is replete with people and activity during the Shivarati and Bala Chaturdesi. It is connected with mainland with a bridge. Kamalasagar Kali Temple (Tripura) Tripura is a state with a predominantly Hindu population and naturally there are a number of prominent Hindu temples. The Kamalasagar Kali Temple is one such instance. Located on a hill, 27 km from Agartala, overlooking the pretty Kamalasagar Lake, this temple is a major pilgrimage spot. It is adja-
cent to the Bangladesh border. The image of deity is made of sandstone and the resemblances with Goddess Durga are evident. However, a shiva linga is found at leg of the idol. The lake was dug by Monarch Manikya Bahadur in the 15th century and the temple was set up in the 17th century. Lord Krishna Temple (Manipur) This is one of the famous temples in Manipur. The Lord Krishna Temple is located on Imphal river banks at Brahmpur Guru Aribam Leikai. It was set up in 1704 AD. The brick made temple has a dome type hemispherical roof. The dome surface is adorned with floral motif. In the temple, one can find different events in life of lord Krishna. These idols are quite artistic. The Janmasthami festival is celebrated with much enthusiasm in this temple every year. Nartiang Durga Temple (Meghalaya) Located in the pictur-
esque Jaintia Hills district, the Nartiang Durga Temple is one of the ancient temples in Meghalaya. Thought to be over 500 years old, this temple draws a huge number of pilgrims every year. It is one of the famous 51 Shakti Peethas mentioned in Hindu mythology. The rituals performed at this temple are a blend of ancient Khasi traditions and Hindu customs. Here Durga Puja is performed but instead of an idol, a banana plant is used for worship. During the puja, animal sacrifice is also done at the temple. As per the legends, the temple was a part of former Jaintia fort. Asvakranta Temple (Assam) Asvakranta temple is among major religious destination in Assam. Located in Guwahati, the temple is a place for worshipping Lord Vishnu. The reclining god is worshiped here by pilgrims. As per the folklores Lord Krishna slayed the demon named

Bowlers also played a big part in RCB's turnaround: Chahal PTI Bengaluru, May 19 : Royal Challengers Bangalore batting has been on fire with captain Virat Kohli leading the charge with a record-breaking spree but leggie Yuzuvendra Chahal feels his side's bowlers have also played a crucial role in the team's turnaround in the ongoing IPL. Chahal said that RCB bowlers played no small part in the team rising to number two spot in the IPL points table, especially after Chris Jordan joined the side. "In last two games, the bowlers have done really good job because in earlier games bowling was the concern and we were
Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli Yuzuvendra Chahal facing combination problems too. Now, the combination is right and bowlers are bowling in right areas. We have improved our bowling and
erased the tag of having a weak bowling lineup," Chahal told reporters at post-match press conference after RCB beat Kings XI Punjab by 82
runs here. "When Jordan came into the team, the first two matches did not go well for him. The way he bowled in Mohali and in the last match against KKR it helped the team, especially when you have Watson and Jordon it helps," he said. Chahal said he felt lucky to have Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and Shane Watson in his team instead of bowling at them. "Yeah (I don't feel like to bowl at them). The top four batsmen -- Watson, Gayle, Virat and AB -are in my team. So, I feel I am lucky," he said. Asked what he thought the secret of Kohli's suc-
`Stunned` Klopp vows to stage strong comeback post Europa League heartache ANI London, May 19 : Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has vowed that his side will learn a lesson from their shocking Europa League final defeat to Sevilla and will come back even stronger in the future. Defending champions Sevilla destroyed Liverpool's long lasting hope of ending their 11year European drought by defeating them 3-1 in the Europa Cup final at the St. Jakob-Park in Basel. Liverpool dominated the early stages of the game and went ahead through an excellent goal by England striker Daniel Sturridge in the 35th minute but Jurgen Klopp's side failed to capitalise and went to pieces in the second half. Sevilla's Kevin Gameiro scored the equalizer in less than a minute after the start of the second half before captain Coke scored a brace in a gap of six minutes to hand Unai Emery's men with title for third
consecutive time. Pointing out the reason behind the defeat, Klopp said his side failed to defend well and lost number of chances to score in the second-half. "What happened then was probably we lost faith in our style of play. We were not compact for a second, didn't defend well, we were nervous. That shows that we are not well enough. This information from tonight we have to carry. We have to use this experience to be stronger, I'm sure we will be stronger if we use it well," the German, who was shocked by the defeat, was quoted as saying by goal.com. Klopp, however, took blame on himself for the defeat, saying he had failed to take some appropriate decisions during the match. "I think in this moment, I am responsible for this performance so there's no criticism from my side. I spoke to my players already and tomorrow
Jurgen Klopp they go all over the world so that's how it is. Nobody in the stadium believed. I had a few moments when I thought we could change but it's not enough," he added. With the defeat, Liverpool have also lost the chance to compete in any European football next season.
"To be honest, I think about it, it is OK," he added. "We are responsible for not being in national ( European ) competition next year. We have to use the time. It's not about the size of squad, the players we have - it's about using the time for training, to get better," insisted Klopp.
cess in this IPL, Chahal said, "He is working on his fitness and spends lot of time in the gym, and also in nets. After the batting, he bats on the centre wicket to practise hitting sixes. He has worked hard and hence he has made over 400 runs this IPL." Replying to a question, Chahal said Kohli gave him freedom to bowl, but he would insist on not giving away sixes. "When he tosses the ball to me, he tells me not to give away sixes, but bowl freely. Against KXIP, I went after wickets because we had a big total on hands. He just told me to bowl the way I bowl," Chahal said.

Pakistan need to focus on quality rather than quantity: Afridi
Shahid Afridi ANI Karachi, May 19 : Former Pakistan T20 skipper Shahid Afridi has said that his country are failing to produce fine cricketers while highlighting the immediate need to focus on quality rather than quantity to turn the things around for themselves. The 36-year-old observed that there are more of first-class cricketers in the squad in contrast to his early cricketing days when a
break at this level was a difficult task, the Dawn reported. Pinpointing the lack of cricket at the grassroots level as the reason behind Pakistan's downfall, Afridi expressed his desire to open cricketing academies for young talent in the country. The all-rounder stepped down from the post of T20 skipper following Pakistan's humiliating group-stage exit from the World T20 in India.
