3 days 6th triennial conference of Baptist Women Fellowship concludes Staff Reporter Pasighat, Oct 18 : A 3 days long 6th triennial conference of Baptish Women Fellowship of North East India with the theme: ‘Arise & Shine’ was held here at Adi Baptist Union Mission Centre, Pasighat under Arunachal Baptist Church Council concluded on last Sunday with huge turn up of believers from all across North-East. While briefing about the conference and its achievement, Adi Baptist Union Women Department Secretary Kenjir Kakki and Arunachal Baptist Church Council Women Department Secretary, Gobi Kamsi said that, role of women in society, family etc was widely emphasized in the speeches. “There are many women in the society who are more concern to materialistic pleasures than giving good upbringing to their children and such negligence from mothers often drive those youths into drugs and other anti-social activities”, said the duo. Church Response to Militancy was also widely spoken by one of the speaker as some parts of North-East India are infected with militancy. The duo also informed that, before this mega event here at Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh, it was earlier held at Nagaland Baptist Council, Manipur Baptist Convention, Karbi Anglong Baptist Convention, Assam Baptist Convention, Garo Baptist Convention.

UNESCO’s DirectorGeneral condemns murder of reporter Yaqoub Sharafat in Afghanistan Paris, Oct 18: The DirectorGeneral of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today called for an investigation into the killing of local broadcaster Yaqoub Sharafat in the city of Qalat in the south of Afghanistan. “I condemn the murder of Yaqoub Sharafat,” the Director-General said, “and I call on the authorities to investigate this crime. Violence against media workers undermines freedom of expression and press freedom, challenging democracy and rule of law.” Sharafat, a reporter for public broadcaster Radio Television Afghanistan, was shot by unknown assailants on 16 October. The Director-General of UNESCO issues statements on the killing of media workers in line with Resolution 29 adopted by UNESCO Member States at the Organization’s General Conference of 1997, entitled “Condemnation of Violence against Journalists.” (Agencies)

Twenty-two people were killed and 120 injured in a major fire at SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar on Monday evening. While 14 patients were declared “brought dead” at Capital Hospital, eight were “brought dead” to AMRI Hospital from the fire-struck private medical facility, officials said.

Earlier, after verification, the death toll was put at 19 by the Odisha government on late Monday night.

Patnaik, who visited AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, and AMRI Hospital in the morning, said patients were recovering well. As many as 105 patients were getting intensive care treatment at nine hospitals. Mr. Patnaik described the mishap as “very tragic“. He ordered an inquiry headed by a revenue divisional commissioner into the incident. According to sources, the tragedy occurred due to suffocation as the smoke spread in most of the wards soon after the fire. Most of the victims, who were on oxygen support, died.

Power tariffs to go up in state: Assam Power Minister ET Bureau Guwahati, Oct 18

He said the new tea gardens at Namsai in Arunachal Pradesh had good production rate with quality leaves.

Power minister Pallab Lochan Das on Tuesday stated that the power tariffs in the state may be hiked soon as state sector power utility Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) is facing crisis because of its debt of around Rs 265 crore.

It was also good news for Arunachal Pradesh that a 24-member team of the Korean International Tea Research Institute and Federation of Korean Tea Masters, including five guides, would visit the state's tea gardens at Namsai from Wednesday to exchange views on the taste of Korean and Arunachal tea, he said.
