Local school a kindergartener’s delight The children that we sent from here ... were more prepared for Grade 1: principal Mark A. Cadiz mcadiz@insidetoronto.com For 680 kindergarten kids in Toronto, school just got whole lot cooler. Fraser Mustard Early Learning Academy (FMELA) located in the multicultural and densely populated neighbourhood of Thorncliffe Park is the largest full-day kindergarten (FDK) school in the country. “We are not really an all kindergarten school, we are just made up of the kindergarten children that belong to this community,” said principal Catherine Ure. “The important thing for us is to make sure what we are doing is exemplary, so other kindergartens can look to us for guidance.” The Toronto District School Board school equipped with the latest knee-high design and technologies is a kindergartener’s dream school with plenty of natural light, arts and crafts and spacious rooms to stimulate learning. There is even a play area filled with coloured mats in the main foyer for gym-type activities. Carefully thought out by the folks at Kohn Schnier Architects, a design firm based in Toronto, architects and designers got their inspiration straight from the 4-and-5-year olds, re-imagining the design of the school from a child’s point of view. “There are a lot of things we did to facilitate for the younger kids. For instance we have floor to ceiling windows, since kids spend a lot of time on the floor, plus a heating system embedded within the flooring makes it even more comfortable for them as they learn,” said architect Martin Kohn. Upon entering the school the openness of the design is obvious

especially in comparison to older kindergartens which are known to be smaller spaces. A large ramp, a key design aspect encouraging safer passage between floors, wraps around the walls in a triangular fashion linking the first and second levels. independence “We thought it was very important to allow the kids to have access to the entire building. In older schools kindergarten kids are not allowed to go into the halls, in this building they have more independence learning their way around,” said Kohn. The Thorncliffe neighbourhood originally meant for 12,500 residents is home to approximately 30,000 residents, many of whom are newcomers to the country. With the diversity and various languages spoken in the neighbourhood some would be quick to imagine the challenges the school would face, but this isn’t the case Ure said. ‘language learners’ “Because of their age they are language learners so we don’t have many children with language challenges. We have children coming to us with one, two or three languages, it may not be English, but they are coming with different opportunities to communicate with us and we just need to be open to that, while overlaying English on top,” Ure said. Aside from its educational function, the school has adapted a bigger role in the community and that’s where the challenges lay, Ure added,

as the school wants to build community partnerships and find better ways to connect with parents. And in that effort, FMELA invited parents to take part in their innovative math program where they participated in numeracy skill building activities using beads and mirrors to determine symmetry. It was a success as parents started to understand what the school was trying to do, all while getting to know the teachers and staff. Kindergarten teacher Stephaine Hammond has taught in the neighbourhood for seven years and is entering her second year at FMELA — she absolutely loves it. “You have 26 other kindergarten teachers that you can collaborate with and that’s the biggest difference. You are not just an isolated island unto yourself which is the case for many kindergarten teachers in other schools,” Hammond said. And the results are already pouring in from students who have moved on from last year. “The children that we sent from here last year had many more skills and were more prepared for Grade 1,” Ure said.

et this be a municipal election campaign about ideas: not just the sharing of ideas but also how they can get implemented. Ideas on how our neighbourhoods can grow and evolve. Ideas on how our residents can become more engaged. Ideas on how our citizens can work together. At 4:30 p.m. this afternoon, the final candidate list for Toronto’s mayor, councillors and school board trustees will be set. And we need to see what our candidates have to offer. But in addition to concrete proposals for their respective communities, candidates must offer how they intend to work with others – the citizens they’ll be representing as well their our view political colleagues. When it comes to representYour municipal ing constituents, it is possible earn respect – and ulticandidates must to mately build consensus – from earn their votes a wide range of viewpoints. That comes from being professional, from being diligent and by listening to all stakeholders. When it comes to working with political colleagues, Toronto council is made up of 45 elected representatives. The Toronto District School Board has 23. The Toronto Catholic District School Board has 13. An individual running for office is ultimately just one voice at the table. Even someone with the power and resources of the mayor’s office can have their vision sidelined – and we did witness that in this most recent term of council. Toronto has a lot of diverse (and sometimes competing) interests. Being able to connect with a diverse group of stakeholders on a myriad of issues – especially on those where a fundamental disagreement exists – is not an easy task, but it is a necessary one. To the candidates: Be prepared to offer your vision. Be prepared to back it up with facts and observations. But be prepared to explain a more challenging question: How would you work with your constituents and elected colleagues to push that vision forward? To Toronto’s voters: Inform yourselves on the issues that matter in your respective communities. Respect your vote – and make the candidates earn it. East York Farmer’s Market offers a harvest of delights

N

ow that we have reached the beginning of September we are being blessed with some ideal late summer days. Ironically, it’s now that the humidity and high temperatures are starting and we can now enjoy truly balmy weather. We are also beginning to enjoy the harvests of the fall as many types of local crops begin to ripen. Corn, a wide variety of garden vegetables and Ontario-grown fruit are now available. One of the best places to buy a wide range of fresh local food products is the farmers’ market held at the East York Civic Centre at 850 Coxwell Ave. This is held each Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be continuing until Oct. 25. I dropped by this week in order to make some purchases, and frankly if you want to see one of the

reasons why the East York Civic Centre is the heart of the community visit it yourself. Families and individuals were enjoying the pleasant late summer day by using the entire park in front of the centre as a place to relax. The market was packed with people of all ages who were being offered a wide range of food items and goods produced by artisans. good choices There were so many good choices I had to walk around the market (which extends from the War Memorial Cenotaph down to Coxwell Avenue) several times before making my final choices. What I found offered there was a wonderful mix of fresh garden market vegetables, such as carrots and peas, along with corn and squash.

joe cooper watchdog Mixed with that were fresh blueberries, peaches and other fresh Ontariogrown fruit. specialty items There were also specialty items such as natural honey, maple syrup, and fruit syrups. Offered along with this were a wide range of baked items such as whole wheat and rye breads, cookies and pies. The pies were especially enticing, being made from all types of fruit and priced very reasonably. In addition to the produce and prepared good there were also a number of items that had been created by artisans that were for sale. Several caught my eye, such as hand crafted bee’s wax candles. One of the things that

also struck me was the number of people who are now offering fruits and vegetables that are being produced without the use of pesticides or preservatives. These items might cost a little more, but I think they are worth it; not only for your own health but also the health of the planet. What really makes the farmer’s market such a wonderful affair is that it constantly changes as the season progresses. Once we start getting further into the fall season new crops will begin appearing in the stalls, bringing you new opportunities to try some excellent culinary delights. So do take some time to drop by and sample what our Ontario farmers have to offer. Joe Cooper is a long-time East York resident and community activist. His column appears every Thursday. Toronto police investigate at the scene of a homicide on Danforth Avenue near Dawes Road Monday evening. Two people were stabbed in the incident and one victim, a 22-year-old man, suffered a fatal wound. Police have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the incident. Photo/MANNY RODRIGUES

Arrest made in stabbing >>>from page 1 pronounced dead. A second man with a stab wound was found at Trent and Danforth avenues. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries. “We’ve identified that this is an incident that took place between two groups who knew each other, that this is not a random act and that the accused and the victims knew each other,” Det. Rob North said. “We have a number of scenarios that we are looking at as a possible motive.” Police are looking for both persons of interest and more witnesses in the case. “We’ve had some great cooperation from people in the community,” North said. “However, we are appealing to anyone else in the community who we haven’t spoken to yet who may have information to help us out.” This is the city’s 31st murder of the year. No names have yet been released. North said the murder victim didn’t live in the Danforth and Dawes community but did have ties to the area.

TDSB seeks share of development charges CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com With the city’s recent approval of 7,000 new condominium units across Toronto, two Toronto District School Board (TDSB) trustees are asking for their share of Education Development Charges (EDC) that could add up to millions of dollars. Chris Glover, Etobicoke Centre trustee, held a press conference alongside Mari Rutka, TDSB board chair and Willowdale trustee, asking the province to change the

regulations to Education Development Charges. The levies charged from the new condo developments last week will generate $5.9 million for the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), Glover said. “The public school board is not getting any of that,” added Glover, explaining because the TDSB has land, it is not allowed to collect the charges, which can only currently be used for the purchase and upgrading of land. School boards must meet several conditions to be eli-

gible to collect EDC, which include that the board must show the number of students it needs to accommodate is larger than the space available. While the TCDSB is at capacity, the TDSB, which serves more than double the number of students, is not considered eligible since it still has space across the system. “For a city this size, it’s never going to happen,” Rutka said. She added under the current funding formula, all the schools need to be completely

full before the province provides capital funding. “We sort of get doubly dinged,” Rutka said. “We don’t get money from the province and we don’t get money from the developers.” The TDSB previously sent an open letter to provincial party leaders earlier this year, asking for changes to the Education Act so the public school board can begin to collect Education Development Charges to be used for renovations and additions as well as new school construction. In Rutka’s high-growth

riding of Willowdale where condos are being built along the Yonge Street corridor between Finch and Sheppard avenues, local schools are already above capacity with nine portables on the playing field. Heather Mitchell, board director of the Toronto Sports Council, said it’s shortsighted to force the TDSB to sell off surplus land, with community groups worried over the loss of parks and green space.

Ford, Tory make better Dungeon Masters than transit planners

I

never pegged Rob Ford and John Tory as the kind of kids who played a lot of Dungeons and Dragons in high school. Tory is bit too old and suave to have gotten into the über-nerdy 1980s roleplaying game, and the only set of polyhedron dice kids like the Ford brothers would have had was the one they’d swiped from the cowering members of the Scarlett Heights D&D Club. Still, as a recovering Dungeons-and-Dragons über-nerd myself, I’ve got to say: both Ford and Tory would have made wicked Dungeon Masters. Armed with nothing but graph paper, some pencils and their unbridled imagination, both have come up with wonderful, fanciful maps that’ll keep parties of dungeon-crawlers busy for months – or, if they’re elected, years. Of the two transit dungeons, Ford’s is undeni-

david nickle the city ably cooler. He’s drawn a veritable minotaur’s maze of subway lines on his $9-billion plan to drive Torontonians underground: tunnels under Finch and Sheppard Avenues in Etobicoke and Scarborough, a dank catacomb for the Eglinton Crosstown light rail line in Scarborough, and a downtown relief passageway beneath Leslieville and Corktown. Tory’s plan is not technically a transit dungeon – Smart Track is all above ground – but the serpentine rail line wending through Scarborough, downtown Toronto and, if you listen to Olivia Chow, some living rooms in Etobicoke, is certainly sitting on a dragon’shorde of gold. The trouble is that both

Tory and Ford’s transit plans are asking voters to roll dice on very real schemes; schemes that are going to cost real money and plough through real neighborhoods. Neither Tory nor Ford have provided much comfort in their financing plans – both relying on the unproven tax increment financing model to pay the very significant cost of those projects, and Ford floating a further range of financing mechanisms that a team of experts spent considerable energy definitively refuting during the Sheppard subway debate this past term. This kind of thing has always played much better over a long night in a suburban rec room than it does in the real world. Any über-nerd could tell you that. borers reach Dufferin Street wTunnel Tunnel borer machines (TBMs) excavating the west underground portion of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT have nearly reached Dufferin Street. About 2.5 kilometres of tunnelling is complete since last spring, with both “Dennis” and “Lea” digging underneath Eglinton Avenue West. They are expected to reach Allen Road by December, according to Metrolinx. The two massive drilling machines have continued to carve out the Crosstown’s underground route, departing from Black Creek Drive last spring. Once the machines reach the Allen, they will be extracted and redeployed east to Yonge Street, said Metrolinx senior executive Jack Collins. A second set of TBMs will also tunnel from east of the Don Valley towards Yonge Street. All tunnelling is expected to be done by late 2016. The first phase of the Crosstown is scheduled to open in 2020.
