uReport the news JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The recent stabbing death of 15-year-old Isaiah Witt has profoundly impacted the East York
community. The Scarborough boy’s death on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Stan Wadlow Park along with other recent incidents in and around the green space near Woodbine Ave-
nue and O’Connor Drive have prompted those who live and work there to strive to ensure their area remains safe. On Monday night, about 60 people gathered at the Stan Wa-
dlow Clubhouse for a public meeting to discuss safety concerns. Local police, City of Toronto

JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A popular and well-loved east Toronto fundraiser is celebrating a special milestone in 2017. This year, the Riverdale Share Concert, which since its inception has raised upwards of $270,000 for a host of local organizations, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Typically held on the first Sunday of December, the annual event has also featured scores of emerging and renowned acts from across Toronto. "It’s actually kind of shocking that a small group has kept this fire roaring all these years," said Riverdale resident Susan Baker, the show’s long-time executive producer. She couldn’t say enough about the dedicated members of her organizing committee, which consists of about 15 community members, who work incredibly hard every year to bring the ambitious event to life. "People are very committed to Riverdale Share. It’s an annual family tradition

Riverdale Share Concert organizing committee members Joan Allison (left), Kristin Briggs, Chrysanthi Michaelides, Pauline Fortier, Olivia Haller, Beth Shales, Adrianna Solman, Liz Brulé, Susan Baker and Susan Flynn gather at executive producer Baker’s Riverdale Avenue home on Monday, Oct. 30 to continue planning for the Dec. 3 show. during the holidays and there’s a great sense of pride for those who are involved," Baker said. "I think Riverdale Share really exemplifies community. It’s put on by a community for a community." This year is extra special for Baker as her eightmonth-old granddaughter
will be in attendance. "It’s come full circle. My family has been very involved over the years," said Baker, who first got involved with the concert back in 1991 when she was eight months pregnant. "It’s similar for many families." Riverdale Share, which
this year is set for Sunday, Dec. 3 at the Danforth Music Hall, 147 Danforth Ave., wouldn’t be possible without countless donations from individuals and groups in the community as well as local businesses and companies. All of the show’s 100-plus artists and performers also donate their
time. In honour of its 25th anniversary, this year’s Riverdale Share Concert will feature several returning acts, most notably headliners Julian Taylor, Murray McLaughlan, and Tabby Johnson as well as Micah Barnes. The 20-act show will also
feature the Desna School of Ukrainian Dance and Jonny Purdy-Flacks, who are both performing for the first time. "Live music is the best way to bring a community together, and, there’s no better annual music event in this community than Riverdale Share," returning emcee Mike Tanner, Toronto’s music sector development officer as well as frontman for The Circumstantialists, said in a Nov. 1 release. "Each year, the concert puts a diverse and inclusive lineup on stage, showcasing great Toronto performers, from old favourites to young artists getting their first chance to play a big show. Most importantly, Riverdale Share supports families in need." Tickets for the 2017 Riverdale Share Concert, which can be purchased for $25 at The Big Carrot, 348 Danforth Ave., and at Treasure Island Toys, 581 Danforth Ave., or online for $29 at Ticketmaster.ca, went on sale Wednesday, Nov. 1. Gord Downie’s special Riverdale connection Late Tragically Hip frontman called east Toronto home for a number of years JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com
David Bastedo
Late Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie was a long-time Riverdale resident. about three years and served Downie and his family on a number of occasions. "The first time he came
in (when I was working) I had a fan girl moment," she shared during a recent interview. Teodosiu said a co-work-
er knew she loved The Hip and asked Downie for his autograph, which he was happy to give. "I still have that auto-
graph on a napkin and I’m going to frame it now," said Teodosiu, who said she’ll always remember Downie as a "very nice" person who made an effort to remember her name. Toronto-Danforth Coun. Paula Fletcher also has fond memories of Downie living in her ward. "He was a really wellknown, well-loved resident of Riverdale," she shared. "I’ve heard many stories of him skating at (Withrow Park) rink. He was one of the boys; an all-Canadian Riverdale guy." Fletcher also said Downie was a very private person and area residents respected that. "You’d often see him walking on The Danforth, but people didn’t bother him," she said. "Gord was just a part of our community, a great man."

While his hometown may have been Kingston, Ont., late Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie had a special place in his heart for Toronto’s Riverdale neighbourhood. The Canadian rock star, poet, and humanitarian lived in the community for a number of years with his family. He owned at least two homes in the BroadviewDanforth area: one on Sparkhall Avenue and another on Abermarle Avenue, which he sold in No-
vember 2015. When not rocking stadiums full of revellers, writing songs, or championing important causes he strongly believed in, Downie was just a guy who called east Toronto home. The father of four enjoyed eating at restaurants on The Danforth. Along with his family, he also often patronized businesses in the Greektown area. Metroland Media Toronto reached out to a number of people to see if they’d like to speak about Downie’s special connection to the community, but most declined as his passing is still quite raw. Others said they knew him as a very private person and felt he would have wanted it to stay that way, even after his death. Nicole Teodosiu worked as a server at Il Fornello restaurant near Danforth and Carlaw avenues for

ABOUT US
Term limits are a temptation best avoided Sometimes it seems that nobody overstays their welcome so well and easily as does a long-serving city councillor. With inertia on their side in the form of long-held incumbency, they have an easy time of it come re-election time, or at least some of them do. Voters in some parts of the city don’t seem to know when to get rid of a bad, or even just mediocre councillor. Last month, Beaches-East York Coun. Mary-Margaret McMahon made it clear she’s not going to be one of those councillors. She was first elected in 2010, and in 2017, she confirmed she will follow through on what she promised then: she would serve two terms and then step aside. City politicians, she said, should not stick around more than two terms. As refreshing as it is to see a politician follow through on her promises and stick to her principles, it is hard to follow McMahon’s reasoning too far - particularly to the point that she has continually advocated: term limits for city politicians. McMahon has twice put forward motions asking council to set a two-term limit. Doing so, she argues, might promote a more diverse and representative council, and would certainly clear out the old and allow the new to gain a foothold. If that were all we cared about in a city council, then term limits would make a lot of sense. But in the context of governing a city the size and complexity of Toronto’s, there is more to consider. Which is to say that experience and deep institutional knowledge and understanding is crucial - as is a professional understanding of public service. That sort of depth can be gained after just a few years in office, perhaps. But it is squandered, if developed in a politician whose political lifespan wouldn’t even run to the end of an elementary school education. More commonly, city councillors only find their feet after their rookie term in office, and hit their stride in the third and fourth term. Why squander that? There is the matter of accountability. A two-term councillor is really only accountable to the electorate in the second election, after that rookie term. Disappointed voters in the second term have no recourse but to wait it out. And that leads us to a final point to consider. Incumbency may offer an advantage, but only insofar as voters are apathetic. If a city councillor has overstayed his or her welcome, it is up to their disappointed constituents to do something about it. Term limits do nothing but let lazy voters off the hook.

Basing car insurance on postal codes isn’t fair The Kanetix.ca map showing car insurance rates by neighbourhood is something every Torontonian should see. It looks strikingly like maps showing Toronto’s highest concentrations of poverty. Angry red the company uses to show highest rates covers North Etobicoke, the Jane Street corridor in North York, the former City of York, Scarborough along Eglinton Avenue and north of Hwy. 401. It’s white, signifying lowest rates, in places like Rosedale, Lawrence Park, and Bloor West Village. As my colleague Justin Skinner reported recently, drivers in North Scarborough pay $2,300 on average $950 more than people in the wealthy core.
MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto That’s driving them "to the poorhouse," says Jim Karygiannis, a Scarborough-Agincourt councillor who knows some of his constituents are registering vehicles elsewhere to avoid their rates. David Marshall’s report to the province, released in April, was clear: something’s very wrong, since "Ontario’s roads continue to be among the safest in

North America," but premiums in 2015 were 55 per cent higher than the Canadian average, excluding Ontario. The Financial Services Commission of Ontario is supposed to make sure the rates are "just and reasonable." They’re based on the vehicles, where drivers live, driving experience, and their accident and conviction history. But postal codes - just the first half of postal codes carry enormous weight, which is unfair. I benefited a while, while I lived in downtown North York. Then I moved not far very west, into a postal code for Downsview. My rate took a huge jump. Yes, there’s a plaza at Bathurst and Sheppard where you can watch people maneuver around the park-
ing lot like they were steering shopping carts at Costco. But are they so much worse than drivers south of the 401, a short walk from where I live, where rates are much lower? I had a Civic, Canada’s most popular car, so insurance companies punished me for that. They taught me buying a larger, more expensive, car will pay off if you keep it long enough. Kathleen Wynne’s Liberal government pledged years ago to cut rates by 15 per cent, and hasn’t. They’re supposedly dedicated to reducing income equality. The map tells a different story. Riders ascend a small rise through a stand of trees during the Midweek Cycling Club/Bateman’s Bike Company cyclocross clinic and race at Etobicoke’s Centennial Park.
Toronto’s bike culture goes off road T
hat Toronto’s bike culture is changing and growing rapidly is made apparent by increased numbers of bike commuters and leisure/ sport riders on the city’s roads and paths, and the financial resources devoted to them. But two less well-known cycling disciplines, street riding and cyclocross, are gaining a foothold among Toronto’s twowheeled enthusiasts. Street riders go freestyle and use ramps, man-made and natural obstacles, as well as their own bikes to perform stunts
and jumps of outrageous athleticism. Cyclocross riders follow a set cross-country course over rolling terrain and varied surfaces, at some points even hoisting their bikes up and running with them. These two off-the-main-road sports recently found outlets in the city. Montreal-based The Rise Bikes brought its Party Master Tour to Toronto cyclists in partnership with Dufferin Street bike shop ZM Cycle & Fitness. The boutique frame manufacturing company’s pro
demonstration team took to area venues with local fans and riders to test their skills. The Midweek Cycling Club, in cooperation with Bateman’s Bike Company, holds weekly cyclocross clinics and races at Etobicoke’s Centennial Park in the late summer and fall. Riders of all ages and experience ride high and low perfecting their off-road abilities, with a competitive edge. Toronto’s cyclists have served themselves well by embracing these two specialty rides.

parks staff, representatives from local organizations, members of groups that use the park, and area residents attended the gathering hosted by Ward 31 Coun. Janet Davis. "The recent incident in the park has understandably raised concerns about the safety of children (there), particularly in the evening," the Beaches-East York representative told the East York Mirror late last week. "Parents are questioning what’s happening and they want to ensure this very safe park continues to be safe. I want to learn from the community and park users if they believe there are other changes that we could make to make the park safer." Davis also said she wants to learn more about the role social media may have had in bringing young people to Stan Wadlow Park the night Isaiah was killed, and what can be done to curb these large "park parties" that have resulted in a number of violent incidents across Toronto. Davis, who also said she intends to organize a safety audit at Stan Wadlow Park,
said a number of years ago there were some incidents at the park that resulted in the installation of security cameras and better lighting. She said she’s open to exploring what might be done now to address any other safety concerns there. Longtime East York resident Cindy Monk-Fuller runs a Facebook group called Community Angels Toronto. Over the years, she’s helped countless local families and individuals who have experienced tough times. In the days following Isaiah’s death, Monk-Fuller reached out to the teen’s family to see what she could do to help. Among other things, she ended up organizing a funeral service at Stan Wadlow Park on Friday, Oct. 13. A Stan Wadlow Park user, Monk-Fuller felt she wanted to do more to ensure a tragedy like the one that struck the Witt family "doesn’t happen again" at the local park. "I want to honour Isaiah’s life by bringing something good out of something terrible," said MonkFuller, who is also working to organize upcoming fundraisers in Isaiah’s
memory. Since the teen’s killing, the mother of three sons has reached out to her local councillor more than once to share her concerns about the need for more lighting and more police patrols at Stan Wadlow Park. "We need more lights. We need some action. We know there’s a problem and we need to fix it," she said. "Once you step away from the path or the sports fields, (Stan Wadlow Park) is pitch black at night. If my sons weren’t playing baseball there I wouldn’t be in that park at night. There’s no way." Like Davis, Monk-Fuller also wants to know more about so-called park parties and what can be done to limit them. "It took a child to die before people really became aware of them," she said, adding she wants police to provide more details about what exactly happened the night Isaiah was killed and the alleged perpetrators. Anyone with ideas or concerns about safety issues at Stan Wadlow Park is welcome to contact Davis’ office directly at 416392-4035 or 54 Division at 416-808-5400.
