hat do you do when a solid eight hours of sleep still leaves you feeling exhausted and listless in the morning? For millions of Canadians suffering from sleep apnea, that’s a daily occurrence, and while sleep apnea itself may not be deadly, its side effects can be severe, particularly when they add up over weeks, months or years. Sleep apnea is an obstruction of the trachea during sleep, which stops breathing and causes fits of wakefulness. In serious cases, people can be jolted awake more than 60 times an hour, and while the body returns to sleep quickly, the condition prevents deep sleep. “Your sleep becomes mincemeat,” said Dr. T. Douglas Bradley, director of the University Health Network Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and Toronto General Hospital Sleep Research Labs. “It’s like sticking a cork down your throat, so you struggle to breathe because your airway’s obstructed and you can’t get any air in your lungs. That goes on for a minimum of 10 seconds and can last up to a minute and a half. Eventually the asphyxia wakes you up and when that happens, there’s a sudden increase in the tone of the muscles in the throat, so the throat opens, usually with a loud snore.” Sleep apnea affects some 10 per cent of the population in North America, with men three times more likely to suffer from the condition. Age is a factor – the average sleep apnea patient is 45 years old – and obesity and inactivity are strong contributing factors. Bradley noted that sleep apnea is disruptive not only to the sufferer, but to their partners as well, as those suffering from the condition snore loudly through-

out the night. The effects on the sufferer, however, can be debilitating. “You feel like you’ve been hit by a 10-ton truck when you get up in the morning, often with headaches, feeling like you’d like to go back

to bed again,” he said. The ensuing sleepiness throughout the day can lead to a three to fourfold increase in the incidence of getting involved in motor vehicle accidents and industrial accidents.

Beyond that, sufferers tend to toss and turn throughout the night and can suffer a loss of shortterm memory and libido. There are also potential long-term cardiovascular health effects, with sleep

apnea sufferers seeing a two to fourfold increase in the incidence of high blood pressure, stroke and heart failure. “When you fall asleep, your cardiovascular system relaxes just like the muscles

in the rest of the body, so your blood pressure goes down, your heart rate goes down, oxygen consumption by the heart goes down because the heart’s resting,” Bradley said. “If you keep waking somebody up, you get surges of sympathetic (nervous system) activity that raise the heart rate, raise the blood pressure and increase the pumping activity of the heart at a time when it should be resting.” Potential cures for sleep apnea are varied, depending on the severity of the case. Bradley noted that prevention is the greatest cure – by maintaining a healthy body weight and keeping active, the risk of developing the condition is greatly reduced. Other simple solutions include sleeping on your side or having your tonsils removed if they are particularly large, though these only serve to help some patients. For many, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) masks are the best treatment. Worn overnight, the face masks blow air through the nose and into the back of the throat to keep the airway open. “This controls sleep apnea, but it doesn’t cure it,” Bradley said. Securing an appointment in a sleep clinic to get diagnosed can be difficult. To help with the backlog, Bradley worked with a group of partners to form BresoTec, a company that has developed a home testing kit. A face mask – the BresoDX – captures sleep sounds in the patient’s home through a microphone and patients can simply mail in a chip containing the recording for analysis. “It makes diagnosis easier and we can look at a patient’s full night’s sleep in less than five minutes,” Bradley said. good night’s sleep – it’s something many of us take for granted. But for millions of Canadians who suffer from sleep apnea, a restful sleep is hard to come by. With 10 per cent of the North American population impacted by this sleep disorder, someone you know may be experiencing the side effects of sleep apnea, which can be severe and debilitating. As Dr. T. CORK DOWN THROAT

Bradley gives a clearer picture of what sleep apnea is by explaining that “it’s like sticking a cork down your throat, so you struggle to breathe because your airway’s obstructed.” That can go on for a minimum of 10 seconds and can OuR ViEW astoundingly last up to a minute and a half. As a result, Prevention in serious cases, people can be jolted awake more than 60 among the times an hour, preventing deep best cures sleep. Sufferers can also experience potential long-term cardiovascular health effects such as high blood pressure, stroke and heart failure. The effects can go beyond the bedroom as the ensuing sleepiness throughout the day can lead to a fourfold increase in the incidence of getting involved in motor vehicle and industrial accidents. NOT ALL DOOM AND GLOOM

Studies show men are three times more likely to suffer from the condition with age playing a factor as well as obesity and inactivity. But all is not doom and gloom with the report highlighting potential cures for sleep apnea depending on the severity of the case. Simple solutions include sleeping on your side or wearing a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask, which blows air through the nose and into the back of the throat to keep the airway open. But as it is with most health-related issues, Bradley iterated that prevention is the greatest cure. If you’re looking for another reason to exercise, maintain a healthy body weight and keep active, you can add greatly reducing the risk of developing sleep apnea to the list.

Ford book may lead to unintended consequences Wa t c h i n g D o u g F o r d announce that Harper Collins will soon be releasing another Ford book – Ford Nation: “the most exciting book that this country’s ever seen when it comes to politics”– I was struck with a pang of sympathy. The sympathy is not for my colleagues in the press or the politicians at city hall, who Doug Ford promised would be spared no indignity in Ford Nation’s pages. My heart really goes out to the writer – or possibly team of writers and editors, as Ford was vague about the specifics – who were contracted by Harper Collins to pen this tell-all authorized sort-of biographical memoir of Rob and Doug Ford’s adventures at the helm of Toronto. It made me think of Tony Schwartz. He did a similar job three decades ago, for New York real estate mogul Donald Trump, when he wrote “The Art of the Deal” on Trump’s behalf. He wasn’t precisely

david nickle the city a ghost writer – he shared the byline with Trump, right there on the cover, and also split the royalties and the advance. By all accounts, he did good work for good pay. Maybe too good. Earlier this year, Schwartz, through an interview in The New Yorker magazine, expressed “deep remorse” for helping Trump build his reputation as a touch-ofgold entrepreneur, which in turn helped him rise through and above the others for the Republican nomination in 2016 and win the thing. Maybe he’ll win the presidency, and if he does…“I genuinely believe that if Trump wins and gets the nuclear codes there is an excellent possibility it will lead to the end of civilization,” Schwartz was quoted saying. Thank heaven there are no nuclear codes associ-

ated with the jobs that Doug Ford made clear he might just be seeking – the mayoralty of Toronto, the premiership of Ontario, or the office of Prime Minister of Canada. But Doug Ford left no doubt that the book, subtitled “Two Brothers, One Vision,” is at the very least coincidental with his re-entry into Canadian electoral politics. When it’s released Nov. 22, he promised to criss-cross the country ostensibly to drum up sales but also to meet people. As to when he will reveal his political plans? Sometime within the next year, Ford promised. It’s hard to say how this strategy will play out for Ford. He does have a base and a profile – the fact that he was able to summon half of Toronto’s news media to his house in Etobicoke for nothing more specific than a “special” announcement Tuesday morning is testament to that. And he does have an image

to rehabilitate: as much as the Ford Nation base of support continues to percolate, a winning majority of Torontonians rejected him for mayor in part because of the way he and his brother comported themselves while in office as councillor and mayor respectively. Will a book tour do the job? Promoting her autobiography My Journey certainly didn’t help Olivia Chow hold onto her early lead in polls in the 2014 mayoral race. On the other hand, a well-penned, well-timed book can do a lot to turn a troubling narrative into a triumphant one – particularly as the most troubling elements recede further into history. And that can open the door… Well, it can open the door to all sorts of things. Just ask Tony Schwartz.

There has been a lot of discussion lately about governance and leadership qualities when talk turns to municipal politics, particularly when certain personalities are involved. The people who are driving this discussion clearly have an underlying assumption in their arguments that government should run more like a successful business. It is an attractive argument, as business presents the appearances of being operated with more financial discipline and managerial accountability than our governments. Yet what does it mean when one says that one should run a city more like a business? There is not just one type of business, but, in fact, there is a wide range of management styles available, often with the most unorthodox or liberal ones being the most successful. When talking about a city as a business, former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg said, “If New York City is a business, it isn’t WalMart – it isn’t trying to be the

Many styles and sizes

joe cooper watchdog lowest-priced product in the market.” You will find that business philosophy is true of all of America’s large cities, which discovered a long time ago the only way they could survive was by being expensive. If you look at which cities in the U.S. are attracting new business and creating jobs, the majority are those with populations around 500,000. In fact, one of the best places to live and do business today is in Riverside California, which has a population of 300,000 and a job growth rate of six per cent annually. What is more important about these prosperous small cities is that due to their lower operating costs they are less expensive to live in, so wealth is distributed more evenly. These smaller cities have the cultural amenities that attract the brightest, the more capable and the most innovative. Once

they have attracted them, they then provide a place where people can prosper in more ways than simple economical survival. Large cities such as New York are only friendly to those who are already successful in their field, and are legendary in the way in which they beat down those who are struggling or who fail. So yes, Toronto’s municipal government needs to be reformed, and some good business practices would contribute greatly to its success. However, let us be careful about which business model we employ, for at this point making Metro Toronto into a megacity has made no real business sense at all. We once had six municipalities of the correct size for proven economic success, but squandered their potential in order to have bragging rights about how big we are now. Options for Davenport says it joined an advisory group for the Davenport Diamond rail bridge, which it opposes, to make sure the voices of its members are heard. The group, which boasts 1,500 members, has long opposed Metrolinx’s plan to replace the Diamond rail crossing with a bridge, having commissioned its own study to point out the flaws it sees in the plan. That hasn’t stopped Metrolinx from proceeding with the project, which received official approval in August from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment to proceed. The group says having a seat at the table will allow it to continue to voice community concerns. The advisory group next meets Tuesday, Sept. 20.

the Ontario Trucking Association released a statement saying truckers need to respect all road users. The statement came after questionable comments from Ron Barr of the Greater Ottawa Truckers Association, who said in an interview with an Ottawa radio station this week that bikes should not be “equal” to trucks. The transit advocacy group TTCriders is planning a rally to protest anticipated budget cuts to the transit commission. The TTC is facing a 2.6 per cent cut to next year’s budget, and the group fears such a move will hasten a “race to the bottom” for riders forced to pay higher fares for declining standards of service. The rally is scheduled at City Hall Wednesday, Sept. 28, the same day as a TTC board meeting. Rahul Gupta is Metroland Media Toronto’s transportation and infrastructure reporter. Be You campaign at East York Town Centre

GROWING WOMEN’S HEALTH We believe you’re at your best when you LOVE. YOU. Share the love and give for a healthier community.

Property management company Morguard is hoping to empower female tweens and teens to love themselves just the way they are by raising self-esteem and self-worth through its BeYou campaign. Launching at 21 Morguard properties across Canada, including Centerpoint Mall in North York and East York Town Centre this month, BeYou will offer free events aimed at girls aged nine to

16 who are growing up in a social media society focused on near impossible beauty standards. “We felt so many young girls hang out at shopping centres, and this gave us a unique opportunity to create a female oriented (campaign),” said Sharon Quigley, marketing director for Centerpoint Mall and East York Town Centre. The campaign, held in partnership with Big Brothers

Big Sisters Toronto, will be held Saturday, Sept. 17 at East York Town Centre, 45 Overlea Blvd., from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Centre Court. Programing will include health, beauty, and fitness tips from YouTuber Dina Zayed, Henna designs, journal designing, and posting positive statements on a Promise Wall. Centerpoint’s event is Sept. 24. For information visit https://beyougirl.ca/

Malloy appointed TDSB’s permanent education director

COME SEPTEMBER

Malloy said he felt “honoured” and “privileged” to work with students and a dedicated team of administrators, teachers and support staff across the system. “I look forward to continuing to build partnerships with parents and our communities, and remain committed to improving student achievement and well-being for all students,” he said in a statement. Malloy’s vision for learning includes reducing barriers to achievement so that all students can be successful and emphasizing the shared leadership of all employees to support schools and improve student achievement at the TDSB.

Pilkey said in a statement. “John’s commitment and leadership in improving student achievement and the TDSB’s responsiveness to parents and students is the right combination for the city’s public schools.” Prior to joining the TDSB, Malloy served as an assistant deputy minister and chief student achievement officer with the Ontario Ministry of Education, and as director of education for the HamiltonWentworth District School Board. Before that, he was a superintendent of education with the York Region District School Board and the Durham Catholic District School Board.

Toronto District School Board (TDSB) chair Robin Pilkey announced last week that Interim Director of Education Dr. John Malloy has been appointed to the role on a permanent basis. Since joining Canada’s largest school board in January of this year, Malloy has introduced a board-wide Learning Centre strategy that moves resources closer to classrooms and improves school responsiveness to student, parent/guardian and community needs. “After nine months with the TDSB, it became clear to the search committee, trustees and senior staff that John Malloy is the director we need now and in the years ahead,”
