Are you a baby boomer? I am and proud of it. Do you remember the fun furniture of the 1950’s? I do. Some of it was certainly functional only and definitely not my taste (the Danish modern so uncomfortable couch and chairs my parents had were a perfect example). Other pieces bring back such fond memories of families and friends sitting around the table. I found one set a couple of weeks ago at a new shop in Keene, New Hampshire, Puggy’s. (see ad on page 19). This baby blue and white vinyl 1950’s kitchen set was exactly what we had in our apartment growing up in the 1960’s. It was a hand me down from my grandparents and my mother lovingly made blue and white kitchen curtains to match the kitchen set. Its vinyl seats had padded backs (very comfortable) and seats, which stuck to me when I wore shorts on a warm fall day. Many family dinners were spent at that table, as well as Friday night card games, Candy land, Yahtzee and of course my favorite the Uncle Wiggly Game. Now a day, this set and ones like it are in high demand. Is it because of the memories like mine? Or is it because of the fun and cheery colors, or the soft vinyl? Whichever the reason, it is fun to visit a shop or two and reminisce about our childhood, whether you are a baby boomer, generation X or millennium.

Second Avenue Consignment finds homes for beloved antiques By Eric Stanway When people have to dispose of various items and antiques, there’s always the issue of whether or not these beloved items can find a good new home. Second Avenue Consignment, 2 Paul’s Way, Amherst, has just the solution to this problem, as they provide a showcase where all of these beloved artifacts are shown off to their best light. Second Avenue Consignment offers a unique shopping experience the moment customers walk in the door. They have a warm, friendly staff that can help with consigning their items or guide them in finding a one-of-a-kind piece for their home. They have a wide variety of furniture and home decor that ranges from antiques to contemporary and everything in between.

“We take great pride in our store and the entire staff works together as creative team to showcase all of the amazing items that come in the door,” said Sandy Lutkevich, present owner of the store. “Consignment is a great help to people that are moving or downsizing or just looking for that one of a kind special piece.” Despite just having taken over the store, Sandy has a lot of experience in the industry. “I took over the shop on February first of this year, but I worked here for the previous owners about three years ago,” she said. “I’m in love with the business and the whole consigning concept. I did consign furniture for a long time, but I worked on the other side of the aisle, as it were. So, when this shop came up for sale in December, I grabbed hold of it and just ran with it. I simply love this business.” The store features antiques, vintage and contemporary furniture, along with jewelry and home decor. “Ours is a shop which you re-
ally have to experience,” Sandy said. “New merchandise comes in daily, in different styles of antique, contemporary and unique household items. Our goal is to offer high-quality furnishings and collectibles at affordable prices. If the customer sees an item in which they are interested, we urge them to call us first to make sure that item is still in stock” Sandy said that her experience provides her with just the skill set she needs to create a truly fascinating environment. “I have a background in design,” she said. “I also create websites on the side, and work as a photographer. Basically, I’m into anything to do with the creative arts.” Sandy says that the store consigns new items every day, with pricing decisions always made in partnership with the consigner. The consigner will receive 65% of the final sale price for any of the furniture, antiques and home decor priced $26 and up. On items priced $25 an under, the consigner receives

50% of the final sale price. “I love the fact that we’re taking something that was once loved, and allowing somebody else to have the opportunity to love it again,” she said. “After all, these are all quality pieces, and certainly shouldn’t be thrown out. I like the uniqueness of the whole business.” Despite only having been in business a few months, Sandy said the store has taken off by leaps and bounds. “We have almost 4,000 consigners, and ton of customers,” she said. “I’m proud to say we’re third in the state in this business. Being a new owner, I’m amazed that we’ve had nothing but incredible
compliments. People are saying it never looked better. We’ve set up vignettes in all the areas, to tell stories about all the various pieces. The customer can walk into an area, and basically take the whole room we’ve designed and just put it in their own home. They don’t even have to think about it. The way it is, we think about color and concept, and how things flow. We change the store around frequently, so that customers always find something new every time they come in here. It’s all really exciting, and each display draws them into the next corner. There’s always something visually enticing every time they come into the store.”

FOLK ARTISTS’ Christmas Open House Saturday, November 5th 2016

Welcome to the seventh season of the Open House! We have been busy gathering primitive antiques all year for this special event. My little sewing machine has been running at high speed and there will be lots of Santas and hand mades. We have wooden sap buckets in old paint to hold your small Christmas trees, pantry boxes, firkins, andlots of surprises. Once again the garden sheds will be decorated with primitives and berry wreaths for your shopping pleasure. Please join our festive gathering and reunite with old friends and and acquaintances. You will enjoy a ride into the past as you follow the winding dirt road to the old farm house on the hill. Feel free to wander our grounds as you watch the sheep graze in the fields. Refeshments will be served in the kitchen. Please enter our drawing for a one-of-kind hand made surprise. Directions: From the South: 91N, exit 26-1 mile to Greenfield Main St. Take leſt onto Conway St., 7 miles to Schoolhouse Road (red and green balloons) take right at end of road, take right onto Glen Road.
