HERB DAY: TREAT THE PALATE; TICKLE THE IMAGINATION By Jody Morgan

BIRTHDAY LADIES

They fly under the radar, this group of volunteers dubbed “The Birthday Ladies,” but their efforts make a profound difference to the forgotten. The dedicated group of women gathers monthly to purchase and wrap birthday goodies for Meals on Wheels’ (MOW) Meals on Wheels Birthday Ladies: Front Row - L to R - Roberta Whitman, Mimi Howard;Back Row - L to R - Clara King, Sandy clients who are often Heller, Michele Roma, Elaine Blanco, Rita Smiley alone on their birthdays. Their efforts often brighten an otherwise dreary day. “There have been multiple studies lately exploring the links between senior isolation and health,” says MOW volunteer specialist Susannah Meyer. “Unfortunately, many of our MOW clients are isolated, living alone, or homebound. Some have family who aren't in contact, some have no one. It might seem like a small thing, but receiving a smile and a surprise birthday gift can go a long way in reminding older adults that they matter and that someone cares.” And for the volunteers? “Our group has received several heartwarming thank you cards from clients over the years,” says Meyer. “These notes make us both

The Northern California Unit of The Herb Society of America (HSA) holds its tenth annual celebration of Herb Day on Sunday, July 9 from 10am – 4pm at Rodgers Ranch Heritage Center, 315 Cortsen Road, Pleasant Hill. Free activities for all ages are planned with hands-on crafts for children as well as informative presentations and exhibits for adults. Admission and parking are also free. Vendors displaying plants and herbal products for sale are staged throughout the property leaving space for attendees to enjoy the gardens. What is an herb? Originally the term was applied to any plant that died back to the ground in winter. Eventually the term designated any plant thought to be useful to mankind. Holly Shimzu defines an herb as “plants (trees, shrubs, vines, perennials, biennials, or annuals) valued historically, presently, or potentially for their flavor, fragrance, medicinal qualities, insecticidal qualities, economic or industrial use, or in the case of dyes, for the coloring material they provide (HSA’s Essential Guide to The Beginner’s Herb Garden).

ETHAN AND PULKIT

Ethan Reid, age 16 and a student at Monte Vista High School, and Pulkit Mahajan, age 17 and a student at Dougherty Valley, likely had no idea that the computer classes for which they signed-up for several years ago would one day make them semi-famous. The two high schoolers enrolled at Lafayette’s Academy of Digital Science in 2013, and they Tech wizards Ethan Reid and Pulkit Mahajan have since competed against those much older in hackathons and programming competitions, winning large and prestigious prizes. They are even featured in a new documentary, Seed, which brings to life AngelHack's Silicon Valley Week, one of the most buzzed about hackathons for young developers.
