SEPTEMBER 2005
Report from the Board Hello and welcome to the September edition of Spotlight. PLEASE advise anyone who is not getting their copy of Spotlight to get in touch with us. South Kilburn NDC puts out its own magazine for residents every month. Spotlight is produced to keep you informed on what is going on in your community and to keep residents up-to-date on what we are doing here at the NDC. We want to ensure that everyone who lives in the area receives their copy and want to hear from anyone who is not getting a handdelivered copy through their letter box. Anyone who is experiencing problems with delivery should contact DISK on 020 7625 2170 or SKNDC 020 7328 9031.
Due to the Board Elections and the summer holidays there was no Board meeting in August – so Tanya is taking a well earned break! It has been yet another non stop month at South Kilburn NDC. We’ve had the Youth Festival, the Youth Board Elections, we’re in the middle of the NDC Board Elections and it’s almost time to go back to school. Where has the summer gone? Remember to cast your votes in the NDC Board Elections, it is your chance to have your say about how the NDC works for the next five years. Finally, everyone at Spotlight would like to say thank you for sending us your poems and stories
over the last year, and of course thank you for reading Spotlight. Jo Merriman Editor
The next Board Meeting is at the Community Resource Centre in Albert Road on September 19 at 6pm.
Celebrations THERE ARE lots of colourful festivals in September.
One of the most popular Gods in India, Lord Ganesh is considered a symbol of wisdom who brings good luck. On the 7th Hindus celebrate his birthday. Ladoos (sweets) are distributed, milk is offered to idols of Lord Ganesh at home and at temples. Ethiopian’s celebrate New Year on the 11th of this month. Celebrating both the New Year and the Feast of John the Baptist at the end of the long rains in Spring, when the Highlands become covered in wild flowers. Children dressed in new clothes dance through villages, distributing garlands and tiny paintings.
Muslims have two very important religious days this month. The first, Lailat al Miraj, celebrates Prophet Muhammad's journey from Mecca to Jerusalem in a single night on a strange winged creature called Buraq. There he ascended into heaven and met the earlier prophets, and eventually God. This is followed later in the month by Lailat ul-Barah which is a time for asking and granting forgiveness. In addition to last month’s celebrations, Sikhs as well as Hindus celebrate Duwali and Raksha Bandhan in August. Another Hindu festival, Sri Janamashtami on 26th is a dedication to Lord Sri Krishna.

In the Spotlight On August 12th hundreds of young people enjoyed a variety of exciting entertainment at the annual Youth
Festival in South Kilburn on Carlton Vale open space from 12- 7pm. South Kilburn New Deal for Communities teamed up with Bigga Fish to bring the community a spectacular urban festival. The event was hosted by Dike Nwosu former Youth representative to the first NDC board. It was a great day for all involved. There was a tasty barbeque and refreshments available all day. Among the acts were Tabot Dance Group, Boys 2 Men, Nightshift and Blackrose, Destiny, Bronz n Blak, Jenee, Diamond Stone Chosen Disciples, Justice/Skatta. Plus a special live PA by Shola Ama, comedy by KAT B from Choice FM, Bigga Fish Dancers, Secret Service, Lethal B and Fire Camp, ADANTA junior dance group (with a live drumming dance set,) and an exclusive fashion show by Concrete Canvas Arts. Beside the stage there was an eye-catching graffiti feature of the event by our very own South Kilburn

artists. There was also the opportunity to join in the creative artwork at the graffiti towers. For the youngest members of the crowd there was a bouncy castle, a large children’s marquee with storytelling from the Blue Sky Drama group, face painting, clowns and games. The day was a great opportunity to find out more information about what is happening in the community. There were stalls of information about service providers, a stall on the NDC Main Board and the Youth Board elections. Young people were given the last chance to vote and all voters were entered into a prize draw- with the opportunity to win £100 pounds. Residents champions were busy all day taking polaroids of people and gave everybody the chance to tell us why they love SK! Blue Sky Arts and Media captured the fantastic moments of the festival and we look forward to seeing it on DVD. All in all it was a great day to celebrate young people, great talent and community spirit.
Special Thankyou from The Bigga Fish Team Bigga Fish would like to say a big thankyou to all the residents that came down to the Kilburn open space and got involved
on the day. We tried to make sure we had something there for the whole family and enough entertainment to keep people interested. We were really pleased by the turnout and that it was full of good community spirit. SCHOOL TIME...SAFE MOVES WHEN TRAVELLING TO SCHOOL

He has been working with local residents to find out exactly what they want from the new community spaces at Blake Court and Wordsworth House. Mark says,”My job is to engage the community in the ownership of the open spaces, so that they can take pride in where they live, equipping them with knowledge to be able to look after it and keep it green and beautiful.” Mark hopes to start a gardening club, so that the residents will be able to become more actively
involved in the creation of their communal gardens. For any queries about gardening please contact mark@gwk-wl.org.uk or call 0208 762 0351.

Street Wise RETURNING back to school in September is the
time to get streetwise about travelling. The beginning of the school year may be the first time some children will be travelling without an adult. For many children travelling to school will be a new and exciting experience. Motorists can sometimes be in a hurry to get to their destination and this might mean that they don’t pay enough attention to you on the road as a pedestrian. Crossing where you see a school crossing patrol officer helps you. They have been helping pedestrians and school children cross the road for more than 50 years. Before the 1953 School Crossing Patrol Act, the only person legally allowed to stop traffic was a police officer. SCHOOL TIME...SAFE MOVES WHEN TRAVELLING TO SCHOOL
Brent Council took control of the school crossing patrol service from the police in April 2000. Debbie Fowler, school crossings patrol manager at Brent Council says, “We want to make it as safe as possible for young children to cross the road. School crossing patrol on busy roads nearby schools helps to make the road safer because the patrol stops the traffic and encourages people to cross with them”. Look out for your local school crossings patrol officer when crossing the road in South Kilburn on Canterbury Road, Salusbury Road and Chamberlayne Road. When you see one cross with them, they are there to keep you safe. For more information when crossing the local roads to school in South Kilburn contact Sally Hennessy or Allison Bennett at Brent Council on 020 8937 5126 and 020 8937 5180.
Always return from school by an agreed time. Let your parents or guardians know about any change of plans such as after school activities.

Kitchen Cupboard Cure for my Asthma ASTHMA, is a very serious condition. You must follow the advice/medication you have been given by your doctor or GP. However there are some ways that you can help yourself. In children asthma is often an allergic response to inhaled allergens, however some foods can trigger an attack. Keep a detailed food diary, noting when attacks occur. This will give you a guide as to which foods cause problems for you or your child.
Food additives, colourings and preservatives which are found in most convenience/fast foods are often problematic. Diary foods (anything containing or made from milk) is one of the biggest causes. Milk increases the body’s production of mucus, which in turn blocks the air ways and sinuses making breathing more difficult. You must take advice from your GP before excluding major food groups from your child’s diet to ensure there are no nutritional deficiencies. Lung tissue can be protected by a diet high in anti-oxidants, e.g. salads, grapes, melons, tomatoes, peppers, kiwi fruit, wholegrain cereals and lots of green vegetables. Chamomile oil sprinkled on to a tissue or pillow can help aid deeper breathing.

Avocado Avocado’s are full of immune system boosting chemicals and are a great source of energy. They can help guard against certain cancers and fungal diseases as well as stabilizing blood fats and maintain healthy blood pressure. They contain the following vitamins and minerals: Vitamins: E, K, B1, B3, B5, Biotin, folate, potassium, zinc. The flesh of this fruit is yellow/green and discolours easily in the air but this can be prevented by rubbing the flesh with lemon juice. In addition to it’s great nutritional value, avocado oil is also the closest oil to our own
skin’s natural oil and is therefore an excellent massage oil or moisturiser for dry skin.
