CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke residents looking for a fun outdoor activity to engage in this winter need not look further than West Mall Rink – access to the ‘roaring game’ is now available on the outdoor ice, courtesy of the Toronto Curling Association (TCA) and the City of Toronto. “The curling community has been struggling for a while to figure out how to bring new curlers into their clubs. We at the TCA sat and scratched our heads for a while, then said ‘you know what? If we can’t bring curlers into the clubs, let’s bring curling to the people,’” TCA President Hugh Murphy said of his association’s new partnership with the city, which has brought curling to two cityrun outdoor rinks this winter – Etobicoke’s West Mall Rink in Dennis Flynn Park at 370 The West Mall and Harry Gairey Rink in Alexandra Park at 275 Bathurst St. “My fundamental objective with this initiative is to elimi-

In south Etobicoke’s 22 Division alone, there were 20 such warm-up thefts on record during the winter of 2014, and an additional four more have been reported to police in the first four weeks of January – most of those latter thefts in the Lake Shore Boulevard West area and in the Burnhamthorpe Road neighbourhood, Det. Sgt. Madelaine Tretter said. “Most vehicles warm up pretty quickly these days, so my advice to people is just to dress warm, stay with your vehicle and protect your property,” she said, noting the preventable nature of such thefts. Rotary honours people with lasting impact on youth at Old Mill gala

Pitch in to make flags, banners for Pan Am Path

PepsiCo Foundation’s Denis Sacks receives lifetime achievement award

Workshops take place over next three months

TOM GODFREY etg@insidetoronto.com Popular businessman and community worker Denis Sacks recalls that he and his wife Sue, as new immigrants to Canada, would often watch rich, well-attired people entering the Old Mill and think they could never afford it. “We used to come here and watch all the well-dressed people and we knew we could never go in there,” Sacks said as he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award Friday, Jan. 30. “There was no way that we could afford it.” Sacks, who then lived in Etobicoke, was recognized with the prestigious award at the 16th Annual Rotary Club of Toronto West Youth Impact Awards Gala at Old Mill Toronto, where he and Sue once stood outside in awe. “Today, I am totally humbled to come back here and to receive this award,” he said to a standing ovation. “Having this event here means a lot to me.” Colin D’Mello, an area resident and CTV news anchor, was MC at the black-tie event attended by more than 300 people to honour Sacks and fellow winners Danielle Clayton, Sue Chun, Marcia Brown, John Zanini and members of the South Etobicoke Youth Assembly (SEYA). “I am extremely honoured and humbled to have been selected by Rotary Club of Toronto West for this award,” said Sacks, with Pepsi in hand, to loud applause. “This community has given me so much and we are never tired of giving back.” Sacks is chair of PepsiCo Foundation Canada, which has raised more than $2 million to help youth causes. He was a driving force behind the foundation’s United Way campaign that raised more than $1 million a year under his guidance. “Thanks to many generous donors and a team of volun-

teers at PepsiCo,” he said. “As a result we have been able to help in the area of active living for underprivileged youth.” He is proud of his role in helping the YMCA of Greater Toronto; an Aboriginal breakfast program for remote schools with ONEXONE Foundation and The Jerry Love Fund in the City of Mississauga that received a $50,000 donation to help families who cannot afford programs as camps, soccer or skating. “Denis has committed himself to youth in our community,” said Peter Haggert, editor-in-chief of Metroland Media Toronto, one of the sponsors of the event. “He is an accomplished marathoner and consummate inspiration.” High school student Clayton, 11, was recognized with a Youth Award Under 18, for giving back to the community. Clayton, inspired by her sister Stephanie’s struggle with intestinal failure, has helped to raise funds for many charities including Scotiabank Marathon Kids and Camp Winston and Young Carers Canada.

Sacks. Below, Marlyn Pawluk looks at silent auction items prior to dinner.

Clayton also attends the Bowl for Kids’ Sake to raise funds for Big Brothers and Big Sisters and was presented in 2012 with the Elaine Giffen Big Sister Little Sister of the Year Award. Community-activist Chun, who is a filmmaker and journalist, was presented with a Youth Award under 25, for using the Internet to empower at-risk youth. Chun founded Newcomer

Tales in 2008, a story-telling project that produces interviews, music videos and documentaries starring atrisk youth. “I owe a lot to the friendships and experiences that I have gained from living in Jane-Finch, so the credit belongs to the community,” Chun said. Chun, who was named a 2014 YWCA Toronto Young Woman of Distinction, is a

reporter for jane-finch.com and Arirang Korea TV on OMNI 2. Individual award winner Brown inspires young people and leaves a positive and lasting impression on the lives of many of them. Brown is the founder and executive director of Trust 15. a non-profit organization that provides inner-city youth with programs that promote positive behaviour, creative expression and working skills. “I am truly honoured and humbled that my work is being recognized by members of the community,” an ecstatic Brown said. “We do a lot of work in and out of the classroom to improve the lives of many young people in north Etobicoke.” Patricia Wright, president of the Rotary Club of Toronto West said Brown is deserving of the award. “She has provided them an opportunity to rise in an area where our youth feel they don’t have any hope or a voice. Marcia has recognized that the need for positive mentors and role models is imperative.” SEYA Director Janice Karmody said hundreds of youth have grown through its programs to become community champions, run their own charities, become board members and business professionals. Dunpar Homes owner John Zanini nailed a Business Award for his more than 30 years of being a ‘premier builder of well designed homes and communities across the GTA.’ Zanini has reflected his Buddhist spirituality in his personal and business life by donating millions of dollars to local charities and community organizations. He has been a member of the PACT Board of Directors for the past 15 years and has played a role in the evolution of the PACT Urban Peace Program. elp build the Pan Am Path and create a living legacy for the city of Toronto. The 84-kilometre trail promises to connect communities literally and figuratively across the Toronto region and may be our best souvenir from the Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. Though it’s the dead of winter, now’s the time to get involved. Workshops hosted by the many partner organizations are starting to take place to help build various installations meant to celebrate our diversity. Lakeshore Arts in Etobicoke, for example, will begin public workshops this month to create unique flags banners for part of the path our view and that “explore themes of home, identity and community stories.” Trail will The workshops aim to bring people together across genconnect all erations and cultures and is representative of the kind of colof Toronto laboration the path is meant to inspire. Check in with partner groups Urban Arts, Arts Etobicoke, East End Arts, Scarborough Arts and North York Arts for other local opportunities. Stretching from the Claireville Reservoir in the northwest, down the Humber River, across the Martin Goodman Trail to the Don River and northeast to Rouge Park, the Pan Am Path’s installation and associated programs aim to engage and leverage diversity by showcasing the communities that exist along the route. It’s a great chance for many of our Neighbourhood Improvement Areas (NIA) to get involved through the launch of the Path – which touches seven of the city’s 17 NIAs – and ongoing stewardship to ensure its future sustainability. The Path also aims to promote healthy living by filling in the gaps in our trail system and improving the public spaces found within. The multiuse trail, once complete, has the potential to become a regional landmark that could raise the profile of the city for its own residents and tourists alike. No matter your opinion of the Games, this project is a great example of people coming together to celebrate diversity and create a lasting legacy that’s accessible to all Torontonians. It’s bridging cultures and geography, providing a physical connection between our outer suburbs and the downtown core. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of it.

Tory right to weigh in on school closures

W

atching the early months of John Tory’s mayoralty after having watched four years of his predecessor is to constantly be amazed – often at very small things that in a saner environment wouldn’t amaze anybody. The mayor arrives at work before 7 in the morning? He answers questions put to him? These things shouldn’t be a shock, but they are. On Tuesday morning, Feb. 3, Mayor Tory did it again. Upon reading reports on the possibility that a number of schools deemed surplus by the Toronto District School Board might be sold, Tory drafted a three-page, densely argued letter to both the public and Catholic school board chairs as well as the province’s Minister of Education Liz Sandals. One can imagine how Rob Ford might have handled that issue – which is to say, not at all, unless perhaps he’d gotten a call from a group of neighbours convinced that their local school was going to be overtaken by the disabled...

david nickle the city or if someone convinced him it had to do with intramural football. Tory’s letter addresses a rat’s nest of a problem of overcapacity and under-funding that the Toronto District School Board is facing: how to deal with schools that are operating far below capacity. It’s a problem the board has faced since the amalgamation of Toronto in 1998, when it was forced to confront a provincial funding formula that penalized unused capacity and encouraged closures of schools that were underpopulated. The formula has been problematic for Toronto, because the city has a long history of finding utility in its school properties beyond their educational purpose. Local school boards and local municipalities have, to varying degrees, been partners. It is also a problem because

Toronto itself is by no means a stable community. Population ebbs and flows – and the city itself is planning for more flow into its neighbourhoods. The resources schools represent in a neighbourhood are finite, and in that sense precious. The city can purchase surplus schools. but that’s an expensive proposition – and given that Toronto is already borrowing money to simply balance its operating budget, not in the cards. It may be that Tory’s attempt to delicately insert himself and the city into the process is a foolhardy one — as he admitted in his letter, it is none of the city’s fiduciary business. But it is a pleasant shock, to see a mayor who understands the value of publicly owned assets to both established and growing communities. That was another thing the other fellow never really understood. David Nickle is The Guardian’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Find him on Twitter: @ DavidNickle

Reader offers praise to reporter To the editor: In my opinion, David Nickle is the finest municipal affairs journalist in Toronto. He gets to the heart of issues quickly and clearly, helping us to separate wheat from chaff in an environment of city hall double speak. David zeroes in on issues and expresses personal views – views I almost always find myself agreeing with. While I’m at it, congratulations to The Guardian as well for, during the municipal election, permitting Nickle to endorse Olivia Chow while, on the same page, the editors endorsed John Tory. Such editorial respect is praiseworthy. John Ellis

While city staff are on hand during those times to grant access to the equipment, for the best experience, Murphy strongly urges all prospective players to sign up to use the ice online at http://bit. ly/1Bl5MvK There, they can not only reserve their preferred ice time, but can also request the services of a TCA volunteer, who will come out to the rink to give curling novices a short tutorial on the equipment’s proper use and the rules of the game. “To learn to curl, you need someone who has some fundamental understanding of the game,” Murphy said. “So this is a great opportunity for those people who like

to watch the game on TV to actually come out, learn a few things from our volunteers, then get to throw the stones themselves, have a laugh, and recognize that it is an accessible game. Curling is relatively easy to get good at, but it’s very difficult to get really good at.” So far, Murphy said the TCA has been “overwhelmed” with the positive response to their outdoor rink initiative – with demand topping more than 1,000 requests for ice time in the program’s first two weeks. future expansion “Based on the response we’ve received from the community this year, I can see us expanding this to even more locations in the future,” he said. “There hasn’t been a person who’s come out who

hasn’t left with anything but a big smile on their faces.” Murphy said he’s hopeful that high demand will, in turn, translate not only into more prospective curlers signing up for the sport at any of TCA’s 25 member clubs across the Greater Toronto Area – which already boast a combined 15,000 curlers – but also to a rise in the game’s popularity amongst Torontonians of all ages and backgrounds. “There are blind leagues, there are wheelchair leagues, there are gay leagues, there are men’s leagues and women’s leagues, there are kids’ leagues, there is an Asian league and there’s even leagues for people over 80 years of age – you name it. It really is the most accessible game.”

Etobian sees benefits of Rexall’s Shot for Shot program in Uganda

Graham Atkinson says barriers to immunization are many in rural African country TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com This winter, your flu shot counts. That’s the message of Rexall’s Shot for Shot campaign, which is providing life-saving vaccinations to northern Ugandan children in partnership with AMREF (African Medical and Research Foundation) Health Africa in Canada. “Our ability to have social impact is not limited to our borders,” Rexall CEO Frank Scorpiniti said in a statement. “ We hope Canadians will join us in our efforts to deliver life-saving vaccinations to children (who) need it most by getting the flu shot.” For every flu vaccine a Rexall pharmacist administers, the company will make a donation toward delivering vaccines to northern Uganda where vaccination rates fall far below World Health Organization targets. In Uganda, 48 per cent of children younger than five are not immunized or under-immunized, the 2011 Ugandan Demographic and Health Survey reported. The campaign has delivered more than 94,000 vaccines by the end of last year, two months after it launched, AMREF reported. Last week, a study concurred with the Public Health Agency of Canada’s report in December that this year’s Canadian flu vaccine has offered little to no protection against becoming ill enough to require medical care. Nearly all flu infections so far in Canada have been caused by H3N2 flu viruses, with virtually all viruses different from the one in the vaccine, the study found. The study is in Eurosurveillance, an online journal published by the European Centre for Disease

Control. The Public Health Agency of Canada reported this year’s flu vaccine still offers some protection against H3N2 and other influenza strains, such as H1N1 and B. In response, a Rexall spokesperson said the flu shot still offers Canadians’

the best protection against illness. “At Rexall, it’s our position that the flu shot is still the best way to protect yourself, your family and your co-workers,” Rexall spokesperson Derek Tupling said. “This is just one study.” Etobicoke born and raised Graham Atkinson, AMREF in Canada’s programs coordinator, witnessed the Shot for Shot program in action for 10 days in late November. Rugged and rural northern Uganda creates geographic and educational challenges to child vaccinations, Atkinson said. “I saw a lot of barriers,” he said. “Roads are often in very poor condition. Nobody has a car. You see a few motorcycles. People

walk or bicycle. “You see women walking five kilometres with a baby on their back to the health centre to get a vaccine. That can be a barrier to following up on the immunization schedule.” Each Ugandan parent receives a health card and immunization schedule for their children.

The schedule recommends vaccinations against polio, tuberculosis, diptheria, tetanus and whooping cough, hepatitis B, pneumonia influenza B, rota virus and measles, all to be administered before the child turns a year old. Often, Ugandan health workers and volunteers will travel by bicycle or motorcycle to schools or markets to enable parents to more easily access vaccinations. “To maintain a fridge (for vaccines) off the grid is often done on bicycle,” Atkinson said. “Workers load up a cooler with ice packs and a box full of supplies and load it onto their bicycle.” Rexall’s Shot for Shot program responds to the United Nations’ (UN) Millennium Development Goal No. 4,

Atkinson said. That UN goal targets a two-thirds reduction by 2015 in child mortality among children younger than five. “The burden of disease in sub-Saharan Africa is such that when weighing the cost of delivering vaccines versus the cost of trying to treat children with preventable disease, treating disease is exponentially more expensive,” Atkinson said. One in five children worldwide lack access to life-saving immunization. One child dies every 20 seconds from a vaccination-preventable disease, the Gates Foundation reported. Grin and bear the cold, police say >>>from page 1 incidents, all those cars stolen had one thing in common: all were left unattended with the keys in the ignition by owners who wanted to keep out of the cold while their car warmed up. “I know it’s cold, but you really do have to protect your property – you can’t take that chance just to warm it up and lose sight of your vehicle,” Tretter advised residents. In order to keep engines warm overnight, vehicle owners are urged to make use of block heaters or park their vehicles in their garage overnight. “Also, some vehicles are equipped with a remote starter, so the vehicle can be warmed up but won’t be able to be driven,” Tretter said. “But if you’re not equipped with one of those, I wouldn’t suggest warming up your car beforehand.” SAFE IN THE CITY appears in The Etobicoke Guardian at the beginning of every month.

You risk losing your car if you leave it running and unattended.

Tips to avoid car theft When parking your vehicle: - Turn ignition off and take the keys with you - Never hide a spare key in the vehicle, as thieves will know where to find it - Park in a well-lighted, attended area if possible - Lock valuables in your trunk - Completely close and lock doors and windows - Turn your wheels to the side to make it harder to tow

Our customers will tell you:

When at home: - If you have a garage, use it and lock it - If you have a rear-wheel drive car, back into driveway - If you have a front-wheel drive car, park front end first - Set the emergency brake - Don’t leave the ownership or insurance cards in the vehicle when unattended - Drop business cards or address labels inside doors to assist with vehicle identification

Tree QR codes encourage kids to explore nature TreeCaching trail at Humber Arboretum believed to be first in North America TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Kids of all ages can now use their smart phones to explore outdoors. That’s right, outdoors. Registered charity Climate’s Sake celebrated its innovative TreeCaching trail expansion Tuesday at the Humber Arboretum at Hwy. 27 and Finch Avenue West. Retired Teachers of Ontario District 22 Etobicoke York funded the 11-tree expansion of the Beech-Vista Trail of 16 QR (Quick Recognition) code-tagged trees. “I’d love to see grandparents bringing their grandchildren, children bringing their grandparents. Kids are leaving their friends for (computer) monitors. Not playing street hockey. I want to bring that back,” said Alice Casselman, Climate’s Sake’s

founder and president. “Let’s take them where they are and take it outside. You need to roll with where kids are at, speak their language.” TreeCaching is a selfguided nature walk. Trail users download a free QR reader on any mobile device and then scan the trees’ codes. The scan directs users to a website to learn more about that tree, and interesting facts about that tree species. QR-coded trees on the trail include the rare American beech, bitternut hickory, blue beech, ironwood, sugar maple and white ash, with more to be added soon. C l i m a t e’s S a k e i s a Mississauga-based organization that provides community-based tree planting and monitoring programs. The organization researched and designed the

QR code tags, which are about the size of a credit card. Casselman said she believes it is the first QR-coded TreeCaching trail in North America. Jimmy Vincent, Humber Arboretum’s Centre for Urban Ecology co-ordinator, outdoor education instructor and camp director, effused with enthusiasm about

Climate Sake’s TreeCaching trail. “It’s a really amazing combination of technology and climate change monitoring making something of interest much more user friendly and user applicable,” he said. “It’s taking getting to know a tree at the next level.” Some Toronto public school students could use

TreeCaching tags in their schoolyards for outdoor teaching purposes. TreeCaching tags will be used at 60 Toronto District School Board schools that are part of the Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) program, as well as 150 of the board’s Model Schools for Inner Cities, to study biodiversity in their

schoolyards, Climate’s Sake reported in its 2014-2015 fall/ winter newsletter. Teachers and students can order a STEM kit for their schoolyard from Climate’s Sake. Jane Li, CEO of Springbay Studio Ltd., came out to support the project. Her company is a games developer with an interest in how games can be utilized to help kids enjoy more time outdoors. “A lot of people interested in the environment have concerns about kids spending too much time with digital technology thinking it is a disconnect from the natural world,” Li said. “Tree tagging is an example of incorporating real things in the natural world into the game world. It makes going outside the fashion, the cool way.” To learn more about the treecaching trail, visit http:// www.humberarboretum. on.ca/

TTC ‘leprechaun’ may have struck again at Pape Station Did the transit “leprechaun” strike the TTC again? That’s exactly what’s said to have happened when an irate man refused to leave a packed bus during rush-hour Friday, Jan. 30 at Pape Station. He had a striking resemblance to the green-clad, long-bearded, bowler hat-wearing individual whose actions created a social media outcry last fall. According to social media posts, which were later corroborated by the TTC, the man would not leave the bus or remove his bike from the vehicle’s front-facing rack, despite being told there was no room. WEATHER HALTS SOME TTC, GO SERVICE wCOLD

The wild winter weather played havoc with both TTC and GO Transit service this week. Monday’s winter storm, which left some 20 centimetres of snow throughout the Greater Toronto Area, forced

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT the TTC to pull some of its older streetcars from a few routes and replace them with buses – the same day a fare hike for 2015 was approved. GO riders, who also saw their fares go up, suffered several train cancellations, which GO attributed to frozen track switches. SPADINA line ON TRACK TO OPEN wDOUBTS

The TTC will soon know if long-standing construction delays will again postpone the opening of the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension. The six-stop extension of the Spadina line traveling north from Downsview Station has already delayed its opening until fall 2016. But, faced with ongoing station construction issues at some station sites,

TTC CEO Andy Byford said at Monday’s budget meeting he’s hired an outside consulting company Bechtel Ltd. to report on whether the 2016 date is still realistic. The findings will be released in March.

TDSB can do better on using resources: education minister Local trustees are the best judge of whether a school should remain open, says Sandals CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com With the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) releasing the list of 130 schools that are at 65 per cent or less capacity last week, Ontario Education Minister Liz Sandals said the board needs to do a better job at using its resources more wisely. “We are spending over $1 billion to support underutilized space,” said Sandals, adding the total operating grant is $22.5 billion. While that $1 billion is spread all over the province, Sandals noted a significant amount of spending goes to the Greater Toronto Area and Toronto in particular. The TDSB has until Feb. 13 to respond to the directives outlined in the report by Margaret Wilson who was appointed by the province to conduct a review of the board’s performance.

One of the 13 directives includes providing a threeyear capital plan that reflects the current student population and clearly state how the TDSB can manage its capital assets within its current school operations and renewal budget. In an earlier TDSB committee meeting where more than 40 delegates from the community came to voice their concerns, several speakers said closing a school based on just the number of students currently attending was shortsighted. G r a h a m Ho l l i n g s , a member of CUPE 4400 Unit B that represents TDSB education support workers, pointed out a school like John Polanyi Collegiate Institute in North York is considered underutilized (46 per cent capacity) by how the province measures the capacity of a school. But he noted the province doesn’t factor in the 400 to 500

Hollings said. Others argued that once a school is sold to a developer, they won’t be able to get it back again even if the demographic shifts and enrolment suddenly increases.

Some suggested that the province should be the one to suggest which schools to close instead of making the school board do their bidding and see how constituents respond at the next election.

But Sandals responded that it’s the local school boards and trustees that know best what shape the schools are in. “It is certainly the responsibility for local school boards to make decisions around what schools they need,” she said. “I don’t know which one is in good shape, which one is in bad shape. These are what the local school boards need to figure out.” Sandals added she is expecting to see a three-year capital plan from the TDSB on Feb. 13 and more than just a list of under-utilized schools. “It’s making sure we have the best space possible for children to learn,” Sandals said. “ We want to put our resources into funding programs, not empty space.” Is the province in the right to suggest closing schools with low enrolment? waking up to winter february storm: The cleanup began early Monday morning after a winter storm hit Toronto, dumping between 15 to 20 centimetres of snow. Right, residents on Oak Hampton Boulevard get down to the task of clearing walkways and driveways. Bottom right, Ryan Koh uses a snow blower to help him clear through his pileup on Tunbridge Road. While below, two graders make their way along Cordova Avenue trying to clear the road of snow as it continued to fall. Staff photos/IAN KELSO

REXDALE REAL ESTATE

Happy New Year!!! Every few months or so I write a column for the Etobicoke Guardian and give you the latest updates on the Rexdale Real Estate market. While doing the research for this column I happen to see my previous figures for 2011. What a difference 3 years makes. As you can see the average home in Rexdale has increased by give or take a $100,000. The lowest detached home sold in 2014 for $340,000. and the highest for $1,100,000. That is the first time we have broken the 1 million mark. In 2011 the lowest priced home sold for $250,000 and the highest $829,000. We sold a total of 892 properties in 2014 and they took an average of 29 days to sell and they received 98% of the asking price. The predominate theme throughout 2014 was lack of inventory or to put it in plain language there were not enough homes for sale. Lack of inventory is still the case today when we only have 45 properties currently on the market. Most people that are thinking of selling their home this year are talking spring time. You might want to move that up to February because at the present time there is very little competition and still a high demand. Which generally translates into higher prices. Keep Smiling!

Tina

Battle against ash borer beetle fails expectations Numerous trees treated with synthetic pesticide won’s survive according to city report

MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Injections of TreeAzin, Toronto’s only defence against an invasive beetle destroying its ash trees, aren’t working as well as hoped. Facing the destruction of all its ash within a few years, the city started injecting its most significant trees of those species in 2012 with a synthetic pesticide to ward off the fast-spreading emerald ash borer. But by now there are signs many of those 13,000 injected trees – and another 1,000 ash treated by the city’s public school board – won’t survive. Trees the city injected in 2012 in parks and along boulevards were studied in 2014 – when it was thought they would need TreeAzin again – and around one quarter were dead or dying, with mortality in some places as high as 60 per cent, Josef Ric, a city forestry supervisor, wrote last week. “These trees are not necessarily completely dead but have passed a point where efforts to sustain them are no longer worth the effort or money required,” said Ric, adding several reasons why injections in 2012 didn’t work. One was dry conditions that summer, which may have led to a

Ash logs cut down in Centennial Park after being attacked by the Emerald Ash Borer. The city has admitted injections of TreeAzin have failed to save more than 13,000 trees.

poor uptake of pesticide, leaving parts of trees unprotected. Higher survival rates are expected for those ash injected during the wetter summer of 2013, Ric said. Besides that, higher populations of the beetle - and the city concentrated injections in 2012 on ash in the Toronto’s east and north, where ash is particularly common and the infestation was fairly advanced - led

to a higher death rate. People at a meeting on Thursday, Feb. 12 in Guildwood, a Scarborough neighbourhood dominated by ash, will get a sad message about 300 trees around two local schools: expect almost none of them to survive the pest. Jack Miner Senior Public School and Wilfred Laurier Collegiate are both school properties hard hit by

the beetle, and the board injected 14 mature ash at Laurier and five at Jack Miner. Unfortunately, the success rate for the injections in southeastern Scarborough was disappointing, Jerry Chadwick, the locak public school trustee, wrote on Thursday. “In other parts of the city where the infestation is not as overwhelming, the injection rates have a much higher rate of success,” he said. Already, Chadwick added, there are at least 150 trees at Laurier and 109 at Miner that cannot be saved, and at the 6:30 p.m. meeting at Laurier on Guildwood Parkway planned for Feb. 2 but rescheduled to Feb. 12 due to inclement weather - the board will tell residents of its plan to cut the dying trees down and make use of the wood. The board, which says it’s removing stricken ash trees across the city “in order to minimize the risk to students, staff, parents and the community,” has also made arrangements for some replanting to be done in the area, Chadwick added. A culling of dead and dying ash, as well as other trees damaged by the December ice storm, proved controversial when it was done by a city contractor over the last winter in nearby Guild Park.

Ric said as many as 300 injected ash across the city “were lost or severely damaged” in last winter’s storm. Infestations of the beetle are hard to detect, and many trees injected in 2012 may have been infested already. The city has also found white ash responded better to treatments than green ash, and larger-diameter trees did better than smaller ones, said Ric. TreeAzin’s manufacturers, BioForest, now say ash should be injected every year to ward off the pest, not every two years. Some 500 ash in Guild Park were injected on a yearly basis to test this theory. “The survival rate is higher among these trees, although the evaluation in the spring, when the trees are in full leaf, will tell us the exact results,” said Ric. Beth McEwen, the city’s manager of forestry renewal, added some trees the city planned to inject were simply missed by its contractors. She said the city expected to lose 10 per cent of injected trees, though losses among trees treated in 2012 will be higher because of the drought.
