bicycles and Barbie dolls, robots and remote control cars. But amid the typical wish lists, there were also quite a few more dire appeals - letters scrawled on scraps of paper asking St. Nick to deliver food, clothing, a home, a healthy body and even paper this
Christmas. It’s those "heartbreaking" requests, said Phillip Barker, that betray the socioeconomic adversity faced by the letters’ young authors at Baybay Elementary School in Ozamiz City, Philippines.
"Up until a few years ago, I would say 40 per cent of the children at the school had never even had a cookie. You wouldn’t believe the hardships they go through," said the lifelong Etobi-

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Christmas came early for the young participants of Trust 15 this week, courtesy of a surprise visit from DeMarre Carroll. About 150 youth members of the Rexdale-based mentorship organization’s Ladies on the Rise, Men of Distinction, Boys of Excellence, and Girls on the Rise programs erupted in cheers Tuesday, Nov. 7 when the Toronto Raptors forward walked into their holiday party at North Kipling Junior Middle School unannounced. Trust 15 founder and executive director Marcia Brown said bringing in mentors her kids can look up to - quite literally, in the case of the 6’8" Carroll - is the foundation of what her not-for-profit is all about. "They love when I bring different people in to speak with them, because they get to hear their stories and can think, ’You know what, I can be like them,’" she said, noting that the response elicited by Carroll’s visit was especially fun to watch. "Just seeing the looks on the kids’ faces, it meant a lot. It almost brought tears to my eyes, because they weren’t expecting this at all." Carroll, 30, made his un-

can’t be successful," he said, noting that he himself overcame the odds to become the first NBA player with liver disease. "I remember back in my day... I had plenty of people telling me that I was too bad, I didn’t get the best grades, I wasn’t going to make it to the NBA, blah, blah, blah - and look at me now." "A lot of people go through different things,
different obstacles throughout their life, and you can get down on yourself and you can think that you can’t be successful or you can’t achieve your goals - but you can. I’m here as a living witness for it," he added. In addition to his words of encouragement, Carroll also came to the Trust 15 Christmas party bearing gifts - a Raptors jersey for Brown, Team Carroll T-
shirts for the youth, and, for eight lucky draw winners, an upcoming field trip later this month. Shenele Rodlin, 13, and Roggere William, 15, were two of those chosen to accompany Carroll bowling on Dec. 21. "When my name was called, my heart dropped because I was so shocked. Happiness just hit me," said Shenele, a Grade 8 North Kipling JMS student
who aspires to not only become prime minister of Canada one day, but also to cure cancer. "It’s all thanks to Miss Brown. Before I came to Ladies on the Rise, I wouldn’t do my work, I would get sent to the office and I would be disrespectful to my parents and other students. Ladies on the Rise made me really think about myself and focus more."

As gracious hosts, let’s not disappoint Syrian families now For many Syrian refugees who now call Canada their home, things must finally be settling in. For many who came in the first wave, a harsh reality awaits at the end of the month, however, when their federal living allowance comes to an end. After 12 months, families stop receiving what could amount to $1,400 per month from the government. If jobs are not yet in place, or housing, the new year could bring some serious financial hardship. In a country that has openly embraced more than 35,500 Syrian refugees since November 2015, we can feel good about living in a place so willing to help those desperate and in need. But our good deeds cannot end there. Community programs like Syrian Welcome Dinners, founded by Torontonian Melissa Jones, are setting a great example of the kind of support people can continue to offer, even if it is in a small way. Wanting to help to give Syrian families a warm welcome to the neighbourhood, Jones began a group that looks for volunteers to host them for a dinner at their home. As she says, this simple gesture makes a world of difference in that family’s integration into the city. It exposes them to our Canadian culture and connects them more deeply to their community. These people’s journey settling in our city needs to stay front and centre for more than just the exciting first few months - particularly now that the financial assistance piece is nearing its expiration date. We need to continue to offer support in various ways. Learning English is a major barrier for many. Perhaps people could offer English conversation clubs in their neighbourhood. Syrian children in new schools no doubt face an intimidating integration into their peers’ social circles. How can we help them make new friends? It is encouraging to see Torontonians like Jones taking initiative, even when it is at their own expense. In addition to volunteers willing to host dinners, she is also looking for a transportation sponsor. Currently, Syrian families are picked up by dinner hosts or by Jones or her husband. Because Syrian families are often larger and with small children, they sometimes have to rent a van to get them to their host dinner. Contact info@welcomedinners.ca if you can assist. Many of the new families upon arrival spoke of the wonder and appreciation they felt being accepted so readily into this country. As time presses on, let’s not disappoint them now.

Help for the helpless is often too far away There’s a man people are calling Larry. Larry was sleeping in front of the Walmart in Scarborough Village. He looks older than his 55 years. People assumed he had no home. But Larry (not his real name) has a home: an apartment in a Toronto Community Housing building nearby. He didn’t want to be there, though. His arm hurts, so he can’t clean the apartment. Eventually, that drove him outside. Joy Robertson saw Larry outside Walmart more than once. Then, a few weeks ago, she spoke with him. "All he needed was someone to help him clean," said Robertson, who runs a neighbourhood group called Scarborough

was empty, apart from a milk carton. Robertson wrote to people for Larry, saying he "admits to depression and drinks wine to escape depression and life issues, but said he will try again after the holidays to quit." "It would be nice to see him have (a) comfortable place to sleep, a daybed maybe, and some food items." She remembers a youth sleeping in the local community centre this summer, his possessions in plastic bags. He’s gone now. It wouldn’t take much to make these situations better, Robertson said. Why aren’t these people getting approached by agencies and charities which are supposed to help? Why, she asked, can’t we at least post lists of services
in every Toronto community centre? Then people can get help for others who need it desperately. Agincourt Community Services, a Scarborough agency, gave Larry a $25 Walmart gift card to buy new shoes. But in many corners of Toronto, charity can be far away, and Larry has no TTC tokens. Robertson was looking for a cleaner, but that’s not something most agencies will do. The real problem isn’t money, she argued. It’s getting services to people that need them. The third school’s walls bulged and needed to be secured with logs DENISE HARRIS denise.harris@sympatico.ca For 143 years, there was a Richview elementary school near the intersection of today’s Eglinton Avenue West and Martin Grove Road. In fact, the Richview area had a series of five schools, each larger than its predecessor, as the
area’s population increased. Today only one remnant of these schools remains available to public view. In 1838, residents of Richview built their first schoolhouse of logs on the west side of Martin Grove, a quarter mile north of Eglinton. The school became overcrowded when school attendance was made compulsory in 1846, and a larger log school was built on land donated by Isaac and Ann Stonehouse on the east side of Martin Grove at today’s Stonehouse Park. By 1874, this second school was also overcrowded, and Matthew and Janet

Canning donated land on the northwest corner of Eglinton and Martin Grove for a new school. This school, seen in the above photo, was typical of the many "little red schoolhouses" built across Ontario in that era, where one teacher in one room was expected to perform educational miracles instructing kids of every grade simultaneously. Soon after it opened, the school’s walls mysteriously began to bulge outward. The problem was tackled by mounting wooden logs vertically on each side of the school and tying each log to its opposite with an iron silo rod anchored by turnbuckles.
Three of these dark vertical logs are visible in the above photo - two on the side and one to the left of the front window. In 1915, this third school was finally deemed unsafe and was demolished. It was replaced by a fourth school, two storeys high with a playroom on the main floor and the classroom upstairs. Over the years, enrolment varied between 20 and 80 children, and there were 53 students attending when the school was closed in 1957. Children were then bused to neighbouring schools for several years until a fifth Richview Public School opened in 1963 at
59 Clement Road, a block north of Eglinton, east of Martin Grove. This school incorporated in its lobby the school bell and the stone date plaques from both the 1874 and 1915 schools. School enrolment in 1968 was 498, but by 1981, it had dropped to 130 and this school, too, was closed. The Toronto District School Board sold the building in 2014 to the Conseil scolaire de district catholique Centre-Sud, a school board that operates French language catholic schools. The school at 59 Clement Rd. was demolished and replaced by a new school named École
élémentaire catholique Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. The plaque from the 1915 school now hangs in this new school’s lobby. It reads: "SCHOOL SECTION NO. 4 ETOBICOKE 1874 1915." Although the school would have been happy to hang the old Richview school bell there as well, the location of the bell is presently unknown.

In just a few days, the Electoral College will have to decide whether to make Donald Trump the 45th President of the United States. One supposes that anything could happen - but the smart money suggests that the majority of Republican electors will give their support to the lying, misogynist, racist, nativist businessman who as of this writing seems intent to maintain business interests that will create an extraordinary conflict of interest once he ascends to the Oval Office. With that on the horizon, the timing is pretty much perfect for the appearance of the report by Toronto’s Integrity Commissioner Valerie Jepson, on the conduct of former Ward 2 Councillor Doug Ford. Jepson’s findings that the former Councillor and close adviser to his late brother, former Mayor Rob Ford, used his office to try to help business clients ac-
DAVID NICKLE The City cess city hall - are not, perhaps, as dramatic as the emerging reality south of the border. But they do show the extent to which we all rely too much on the good behaviour of the politicians we elect - both here and in the United States. As the Electoral College vote looms, Trump has made the legally-firm argument that he need not divest any of his holdings in order to hold the office of President. There are nuances that might trip him up - he’s constitutionally prohibited from accepting
inducements from foreign powers - but in general, President Trump can do as Trump does. So it is with Toronto Council. The Integrity Commissioner has concluded that when he was a councillor, Doug Ford violated council’s code of conduct when he acted as a "point of contact" between city staff and representatives of the two companies R. R. Donnelley and Sons and Apollo Health and Beauty Care - both clients of the Ford family business Deco Labels and Tags. The jury is out on whether Ford or Deco actually benefitted from those introductions. City staff certainly didn’t give either company favourable treatment as a result. But it is remarkable to reflect these days on just how easy it to blur the lines and simply ignore rules that seem firm and obvious, and escape without consequence.

Food for thought Torontonians encouraged to serve Syrian refugees a taste of Canada TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com After coming to Canada as Syrian refugees, it was a year-and-a-half before Khalil Aldroubi and his family were invited to a Canadian home for dinner. Aldroubi, his wife and their five kids came to Canada in spring 2015, but it wasn’t until this fall that the family had an opportunity to connect with a local family over some Canadian food. It was a program called Syrian Welcome Dinners, founded by Torontonian Melissa Jones, that made it happen. “When I met the family from Canada in the program, to connect, I felt so happy and also all my family was happy,” Aldroubi told Metroland Media Toronto in an interview in English and Arabic, with program volunteer Anis Nasr translating when needed. Aldroubi and his family were so excited to visit a Canadian home for dinner that he likened it to people anxiously awaiting Christmas morning. “It was the same feeling for all my family and I waiting to meet the (Canadian) family,” he said. “I’m so happy that happened with my family. The dinner had a very strong impact, not only on myself, on my children too. We have tremendous gratitude.”

There are many other Syrian refugees who have yet to experience an evening in a Canadian home connecting with new friends over a meal, said Jones. “It seems to be quite common that once Syrians are here, and I’m referring to government-sponsored ones, they aren’t really fully integrating with society or getting a chance to meet locals,” she said. “This is a way to really reach out and help the cause, and help these families that have been through so much, and with a low commitment and really making an impact and difference on their integration into the city.” The Danforth resident was inspired to start the program when she met a newly arrived Syrian family and left wanting to do more to welcome them to

Currently, transportation is provided by hosts if possible, or by Jones, her husband or volunteers, who sometimes rent vans out-of-pocket to drive refugees to dinners. Syrian families are often larger than standard vehicles carry, and public transportation can be difficult for large families with small children who are new to the city. Jones is hoping to find more sustainable transportation for the program. Having lived abroad before, she also sympathized with trying to integrate and make connections in a new country with a new culture. She started networking with her friends and community to find hosts, and now she’s turning to the rest of Toronto to help welcome the city’s newest residents. “I’ve heard from both sides, the hosts and the Syrians, that it’s just been a memory that they will always cherish,” Jones said.
“It’s a bit odd, you know to have a stranger over in your house for dinner, but for the people that are open to it, it seems to be really moving and touching.” Dale Hildebrand and Marlene Sagada hosted Aldroubi and his family for dinner. “The dinner was great,” Hildebrand said. “They said they were going to have us over for Syrian food sometime, so that’ll be fun. We’re looking forward to that.”
Aldroubi admitted he was nervous when his family came to Canada. He held back tears recalling what it felt like to arrive and realize they were in “a beautiful country” where refugees are respected and appreciated the same as everyone else. Adapting to a new life doesn’t happen instantly for refugees. Khalil shared how hearing a helicopter overhead triggered fear in him and tears from his small child, with flashbacks of war still fresh in their minds although they were on Canadian soil. He said there’s no way to compare his new home in Canada with the one he left behind. “Someone asked me, how do you find Canada? I say here I can sleep. Because in my country, I can’t sleep, because I fear for our safety,” he shared. “You

can hear bombs. I’m so scared, because at any time, not just in the day, someone can come to take anyone from my family and can kill them.” Something as simple as dinner can help people who have been through so much, Hildebrand said. “It’s all fine and good for us to approve of our government’s policy to bring refugees to Canada, but to actually be able to interact with them, to welcome them directly, I think that’s something that many Canadians could do,” he said. “These folks are just hungry for learning about Canadian culture and really want to make that connection to Canada. On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.
Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners
like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And every time I go to visit, I try to bring something with me." In the five years since founding the Lakeshore Charitable Foundation, Barker has sent more than eight metric tons of books to the students at Baybay and has set up a breakfast club that last year prepared and served more than 9,000 meals at the 670pupil, kindergarten to Grade 6 school. He’s also instituted a small scholarship program, sponsored its drum and bugle corps, set up a chess club, supported the boys and girls scouting programs, and last year funded the repair of about 15 of its classrooms. On his next trip to the Philippines, which he’s scheduled to take before Christmas, a Santa-costume clad Barker will hand-deliver to each student in the school a loot bag filled with candy and cookies, along with their personalized letters from "Santa". The Santa letter project,
headed up by Etobicoke Collegiate’s Interact Club and their Rotary Club of Toronto West sponsors, drew more than 45 students and local Rotarians to a marathon after-school writing session on Thursday, Dec. 8. Both Saira Kirefu, the ECI Interact Club’s teacher supervisor, and Patricia Wright, the club’s Rotary liaison, said they hope their students walk away from the project with a greater appreciation for the relatively privileged lives they lead here in Canada. "I hope what they take away from this is an understanding of how fortunate they are and realize they have so much, when there are so many kids in the world who are starving," Wright said, noting she hopes to make the Santa letter campaign an annual event. "It’s all about compassion." Grade 11 student Christopher Rzepka said the exercise was, indeed, an eyeopening one for him. "A lot of the letters I’ve gotten so far have been from kids asking for toys, but there’s been the occasional one asking for food this Christmas," said Rzepka, the president of ECI’s Interact Club. "It gives us a little differ-
ent perspective to know that across the world, there’s people in need who have so little. I really hope these letters give them hope and put them in the Christmas spirit, just knowing Santa’s writing back to them. I hope it makes them happy and puts a smile on their face." For his part, Barker said he has little doubt the students at Baybay will be thrilled with their loot bags and letters from Santa which, for many, will be the only gift they receive this Christmas. But more than that, he hopes the letters from Santa inspire them to continue their education. "The idea is to give them hope and some encouragement to stay in school, because only 10 to 20 per cent of kids attending public school there will go on to high school," Barker said. "What we do is, we write back and give them hope. We say: ’I understand you were first in your class this year. Santa is so proud of you for continuing to be in school’ or ’I hear your teacher says you’re good in school. Congratulations! Keep up the good work.’ It’s all about hope and encouragement."

Humberwood Centre hosts ’magical’ holiday breakfast for 1,000 CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com The Humberwood Centre hosted a "magical" holiday breakfast last week for more than 1,000 of the students, staff, parents and community members who call the centre their second home. Located near Finch Avenue West and Hwy. 427, the 300,000-square-foot centre houses Humberwood Downs Junior Middle Academy and its near-1,000 students, Holy Child Catholic School and its student body of 360, as well as The Macaulay Centre daycare, the Humberwood Library, and a City of Toronto Parks and Recreation-run community centre. Now in its 16th year, the annual holiday breakfast sees all five of Humberwood Centre’s partners come together to host an event that welcomes everyone from the community to unite for a morning of food,
fellowship and fun. "It’s such an uplifting hour that we have with the community. To be able to see both school communities come together - the students, the staff, the parents - as well as members of the community, it’s magical. It’s just one of those special times of the year when you actually see an entire community under one roof," Humberwood Downs Principal Roula Skordakis said of the event, which took place on Thursday, Dec. 8. "The beautiful part was that people were happy and interacting with people that they didn’t know. Food brings people together in a very special way." Toronto Raptors team up with holiday safety campaign

TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com The Toronto Raptors have teamed up with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council to remind Ontarians to protect themselves from fire and carbon monoxide this holiday season. The Make the Winning Shot campaign was launched Wednesday, Dec. 7 in Toronto with Raptors players and campaign Fire Safety Ambassadors DeMar DeRozan and Cory Joseph. "The Raptors believe that a good offense is often the best defense," DeRozan said in a release about the campaign. "The same is true in your own home when it comes to being properly prepared for home fires and carbon monoxide poisonings." The Raptors players joined more than 100 fire service professionals from throughout Ontario for the launch at the Toronto Fire and Paramedic Services Training Centre. Along with the Raptors, the campaign is supported by Kiddie Canada Smoke and CO Alarms, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority, and Enbridge Gas Distribution. "Don’t take chances with your family’s safety
this holiday season," Enbridge’s Mike Mees said in the release. "Carbon monoxide is odourless, colourless and a leading cause of accidental poisonings in Ontario every year. Protect against the dangers of carbon monoxide by having your fuel-burning appliances inspected annually by a certified technician and installing carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home." Working smoke alarms are required by law in all Ontario homes, on every storey and outside all bedrooms. Carbon monoxide alarms are legally required in all Ontario homes with fuel-burning appliances and attached garages, and must also be outside all sleeping areas. Smoke alarms more than 10 years old and carbon monoxide alarms from before 2009 should be replaced now. Hard-wired models must also be replaced periodically; check the manufacturer’s recommendations for replacement information. Outdoor appliances should never be used in homes or garages under any circumstances, because they can cause deadly carbon monoxide exposure. During December, there tends to be an increase in
fire and carbon monoxide tragedies. "Our province’s firefighters and fire services work hard over the holidays and throughout the year to keep us safe from the dangers of fire and carbon monoxide," David Orazietti, minister of community safety and correctional services, said in the release. "Keep fire safety in mind as you prepare for this year’s festivities to ensure your family enjoys a safe and happy holiday season." Unattended cooking and candles, dangerous use of space heaters, and overloaded or faulty holiday lighting can lead to tragedies during the holiday season. Throughout the campaign, DeRozan and Joseph will be featured in online media with daily fire and carbon monoxide safety tips and a "Make the Winning Shot" holiday safety quiz. People who complete the quiz can enter to win Raptors tickets, autographed jerseys, basketballs and a chance for a kid to hand out the game ball at the start of a game. MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Toronto may be one of the most livable cities in the world, as Mayor John Tory says, but Orville Brown must still keep his rice and flour in heavy plastic bins with airtight seals. If not, he says, cockroaches infesting the kitchen of his Southwest Scarborough apartment near Markham Road find their way in. "These are my tenants, here," Brown said on a night last week, gesturing to the cupboards, where insect traps were full. Brown and renters across the city are hopeful a proposed tougher apartment building inspection regime will help them with problems, including infestations and a lack of heat and hot water, weighing down their daily lives. They include Robert Perry, who said the current system just "shakes a finger" at landlords cutting corners in buildings to save money. "There needs to be a lot more oversight than the city permits currently,"
said Perry, who’s spent most of his live in a highrise near Etobicoke Civic Centre. Four years ago, the building changed hands. Perry said it took the new management seven months to fix a bedroom window which broke in a December storm, eight months to replace a bathroom sink tilting forward and moving away from the wall. For a decade, tenant advocates including Toronto ACORN have pushed for highrise apartment landlords to be licensed. What’s now proposed instead - and which passed the city’s Licensing and Standards Committee last week - is an expansion of the city’s apartment building inspection program. Among other things, the new bylaw would require buildings to register with the city, have a process for tracking and responding to tenant repair requests, and have a "comprehensive" pest management plan that includes the use of licensed professionals. The city won’t commit to it, but would explore using a rating system similar to its restaurant "DineSafe" program, one requiring landlords to post colour-coded signs displaying the city’s rating in a "prominent" location. ACORN
calls this the LiveSafe program. The new bylaw wouldn’t win every battle for tenants. The proposed program budget adds six more full-time positions to the 24 working on inspections still not many for a city with 3,500 eligible buildings. In another building on McCowan Road in South Scarborough, Angela Aminian Fershteh has stopped using her kitchen cabinets in October, because roaches are behind the cabinets. Fershteh keeps kitchen supplies in bags and piles them on her dining table, and in her son’s room. She never leaves dirty dishes in the sink, she said last week. "I always clean; always, every day." She took her management to Ontario’s landlord and tenant tribunal this fall, saying roaches and mould had affected her health, and her son’s. Her complaint was dismissed after the landlord’s pest control company testified they didn’t see live cockroaches in her apartment. Fershteh is determined to try again, and she attended a recent meeting at city hall out of hope the city’s system can change. "I’m not animal, I’m human," she said. "I want rights, please, because I’m paying."

As immigrants themselves, Soni said she and Barnett, who are from Venezuela and South Africa, respectively, understand what dislocation can be like. "For Vanessa and I, (the program) gives an opportunity to children who recently arrived as refugees or immigrants, or first generation Canadians, the possibility of sitting down and really exploring what it means to be at home and build a home," she said. "These are the people shaping our country; we’re done."

Born in a small Syrian town, the 18-year-old lost his mother when his house was bombed, and moved with his father and brother to Damascus, living there for two years. The trio then headed to Lebanon, where his father passed away after falling ill. He and his brother, 20year-old Adbul Hakim, where then privately sponsored to start a new life in Toronto. After living with the sponsors for a month, they now reside downtown by themselves, with Alazhari attending the ESL program at Greenwood Secondary School, although after chatting with the articulate young man with bright green eyes, you wouldn’t guess he has been practicing his English skills for less than a year.
Alazhari is one of some newly arrived 230 Greenwood Secondary School and Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute students who took part in the outreach program Finding Home: Personal Journeys and Visual Narratives, which saw participants create three-dimensional structures based on the concept of what "home" meant to them. Supported by an Ontario Arts Council Artists in Education grant, the program between the Aga Khan Museum and artisteducators Vanessa Barnett and Elena Soni saw the students, all of whom are new immigrants from countries such as Syria, Sudan, Columbia, and Nigeria, visit the Don Mills Road and Wynford Drive museum in September for artistic inspiration. Over the next two months, the artists visited each school once a week to work with the students on designs. Each was given an 8x11 wooden frame, and they picked out materials to use from Arts Junktion, a depot for receiving and distributing donated arts supplies which Toronto District School Board staff can use for free for class projects. After a lengthy debate, Toronto council agreed this week by a strong majority to move forward on road tolls to help pay for expensive but essential transit projects in desperate need of funding. After years of dithering, the city finally had a potential new revenue source to draw up upon, and it was Toronto’s elected officials no less who had bravely committed to a blueprint for the financing the future. At least that’s how I, and most Torontonians, hope it will play out following this week’s sure-to-be bombastic council debate on new revenue tools desperately needed to alleviate this congested city. Toronto has a large shopping list of vital stuff it simply can’t pay for on its own, or with existing taxing options. The seven candles represent the seven days the African holiday is held; the unity cup symbolizes water, or life; corn and fruits stand for children and the harvest, respectively. Several dozen people, some dressed in colourful clothing and head wraps, attended a Kwanzaa celebration organized by the African Canadian Heritage Association (ACHA) at Alexander Stirling Public School Dec.10. The gathering was a mix of music, poetry, message, and mingling, which focused on the young people who attend ACHA’s programming Saturday mornings at Centennial College’s Progress campus. Kwanzaa, which is cele-
brating its 50th anniversary this year, is held Dec. 26 to Jan. 1. The non-religious, nondenominational holiday was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of black studies at California State University, Long Beach, who was looking to bring African Americans together after the Watts riots in Los Angeles in 1965. After founding cultural organization Us, he started to research African harvest celebrations, combining aspects of various ones to form Kwanzaa. The name Kwanzaa comes from the phrase "matunda ya kwanza" which means "first fruits" in Swahili. An extra "a" was added to the name during the early formation of Karenga’s organization, which saw seven children each wanting to represent a letter of the holiday. Specific observances aren’t
carved in stone, but typically involve songs and dances, African drums, storytelling, poetry reading, and a large traditional meal. On each of the seven nights, a child lights one of the candles on the Kinara (candleholder), then one of the seven principles of the holiday, called Nguzo Saba, is discussed. The principles are umoja (unity); kuji-chagulia (self-determination); ujima (collective work and responsibility); ujamaa (co-operative economics); nia (purpose); kuumba (creativity); and imani (faith). "Kwanzaa means the first fruits and we are harvesting young leaders," Osagyefo McGregor, ACHA’s fundraising chair, said from the celebration at the Morningside and Sheppard avenues area school. "It’s about how families stay unified, how we give back. It’s an important holiday."

’Vast majority of people participating are over 55, white and homeowners’: Keesmaat RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Toronto is undergoing a "crisis of public participation", with feedback of residents on city-building not at all reflective of the communities which live here, said the city’s chief planner Friday. Speaking at an event organized by the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI), Jennifer Keesmaat talked about her work to shape urban planning priorities to fit a rapidly-changing city whose residents are now more than ever likely to come from another country, live in a tower rather than a bungalow, and rent rather than own.
While thousands of people have attended city planning meetings over the last couple of years, after analyzing the participants, Keesmaat said it soon became clear the input received was not at all reflective of the city’s demographic diversity. "We discovered the vast majority of people participating are over 55, white and homeowners," said Keesmaat during her morning keynote address at the Artscape Sandbox. "Does anyone see a problem there? Fifty per cent of our city rents, over 50 per cent of the city is not white, and the fastest growing demographic is between 18 and 35." To gain a broader view, a resident advisory panel was recently established to regularly review planning initiatives. All 28 members were chosen via lottery from a pool of over 500 randomly selected residents in a bid to more accurately reflect diversities of age, gen-

Rasouli said the goal of the program is to to better inform participants not just about civic planning and projects underway, but about how the city works. "We want to bring that sense of belonging to newcomers, and make a connection between immigrants and longtime residents," she said. "But it’s been tough."

He said this would include child care, which the province should run, and which could save Toronto hundreds of millions of dollars. He said council should debate whether Toronto needs to go ahead with all of its unfunded capital projects. He said scrapping the Finch LRT transit line could save more than $1 billion. He said the TTC could be uploaded to Metrolinx to create a bigger system for the GTA’s transit users. He said that would save Toronto approximately $600 million.
