bicycles and Barbie dolls, robots and remote control cars. But amid the typical wish lists, there were also quite a few more dire appeals - letters scrawled on scraps of paper asking St. Nick to deliver food, clothing, a home, a healthy body and even paper this

Christmas. It’s those "heartbreaking" requests, said Phillip Barker, that betray the socioeconomic adversity faced by the letters’ young authors at Baybay Elementary School in Ozamiz City, Philippines.

"Up until a few years ago, I would say 40 per cent of the children at the school had never even had a cookie. You wouldn’t believe the hardships they go through," said the lifelong Etobi-
