"I like everything. I like the exercises," Wolfe said. "I like dancing. I like the music. It’s fun."

ESS offers adult day programs for cognitively impaired seniors, most with dementia and in their 80s, some with mobility issues, four days a week at its Alderwood location: two coed, one women, one men. On Thursdays, people with Acquired Brain Injury attend the program.

Across Canada, an estimated 564,000 people live with dementia.

Rotary Etobicoke seeks volunteers to sort hockey equipment CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Rotary Etobicoke is in desperate need of volunteers to help sort through the mountains of hockey skates, pads, helmets, gloves and other gear it recently collected during its second annual hockey drive.

The drive, which will benefit First Nations youth at six schools in remote northern Ontario communities, saw more than a ton of gently used hockey equipment donated at a series of events held at the MasterCard Centre and Mimico Arena in November and December, said Rotarian Laura Latham, who also serves as executive director of the Franklin Horner Community Centre.

"The drive was beyond,

beyond successful. We’ve got more hockey equipment than the Toronto Maple Leafs," she said, noting that, in addition to gently used hockey equipment, Rotary Etobicoke also received 50 cases of brand new apparel, including winter boots, running shoes, track pants and underwear, from a corporate donor that wished to remain anonymous.

While Latham announced that Etobicokebased transportation company MGA International Logistics has "generously" stepped up to donate the transportation of the equipment to northern Ontario, there’s still a lot of work to be done before the gear is ready to be shipped out to First Nations youth.

"Now, the biggest part for us is sorting through

the mounds and mounds of equipment," she said. "Bodies and manpower are essential to getting this equipment out to the kids that need it. This is a huge, huge job."

To those ends, Rotary Etobicoke will be welcoming volunteers out to help sort the donations this week at the warehouse in Mississauga where it’s being stored prior to shipping.

Sorting will take place on Thursday, Jan. 5, Friday, Jan. 6 and Saturday, Jan. 7 starting at 10 a.m. each day at the Illumineer Ltd. warehouse, located at 6503 Northam Dr. (near Airport and Derry roads).

Ilhaan weighed in at seven pounds and one ounce.

William Osler Health System (Osler) staff said the family received a "warm" congratulations and a large gift basket of baby items donated by Shoppers Drug Mart Store 854 at Finchdale plazain Etobicoke.

Osler’s labour and delivery program is one of the largest in Ontario. Each year, Osler delivers more than 7,500 babies.

Shining the spotlight on the stories that matter In a city as large, diverse and ever-moving as Toronto, covering the news can often feel like a drop in a bucket. There’s so much happening here, and it’s a city full of strong communities that often carry their own unique identity. In the Metroland Media Toronto newsroom, we do our best to represent the communities we serve online and in print. Admittedly, we can’t do it all or be everywhere we’d like to be.

That said, we’re still going to do our best to make an impact.

So beginning this year we’re renewing our focus continuing to report on local news and events, city hall, crime and transit issues but we’re also introducing several new beats.

We’re looking to find stories on topics that matter or are of interest to our audience. Topics that, in many cases, we really haven’t focused on before. Parenting, history, technology, health and schools were key selections we felt deserving of more attention.

Considering how many struggle with the cost of living in the city, we’ve also dedicated a reporter to a ’Money Matters’ beat to help break down financial issues. Debt loads can be crippling and it’s shocking how many people lack the financial literacy to be able to manage it. How secure is our money in this digital age? These are areas we hope to explore. ’The Diverse City’ will aim to give voice to minority groups, indigenous people and the LGBTQ community, and investigate issues relating to how we’re all different - our successes in embracing that and the challenges that exist where it fails. All timely subjects for discussion considering the malcontent kicked up south of the border after president-elect Donald Trump’s win. How this affects us as Canadians remains to be seen, but we’ll be watching.

Another area of the city we want to spotlight is what we’re calling ’The Other Toronto’. These are the pockets of population, much of it concentrated in the city’s suburbs, that are home to immigrant communities and working-class families. Often isolated and struggling with challenges like neighbourhood crime and poor education rates, these Torontonians deserve our attention. What stories of success, resilience and identity are happening in our backyards? What needs to happen to improve the lives of our neighbours?

Mike Adler’s column today explains more. We want to be there for these people and tell their stories on a regular basis in the hopes it may make a difference down the line.

Going in search of The Other Toronto in 2017 There is more than one Toronto.

More than a decade ago, the city, United Way, and the province saw poverty deepening around the edges of our freshly-amalgamated home.

University of Toronto Professor David Hulchanski, in his The Three Cities Within Toronto, makes plain how fast the city has divided since the 1970s into an ever-wealthier centre and waterfront, and other places where incomes consistently dropped.

The city chose nine "’hot spots’ of high need and low infrastructure" in 2005, then bumped that up to 13 "priority neighbourhoods".

It pledged people in these neighbourhoods would get money, community hubs and help organizing themselves.

Recalculating, it started calling its highest-needs districts Neighbourhood Improvement Areas because that sounded better, and today 31, out of 140 census neighbourhoods, are NIAs. and Jamestown, and to the south a string of other NIAs through what was once the City of York.

Go east, and Thorncliffe Park meets Flemingdon Park and Victoria Village in another corner of North York; below that, the former East York’s Crescent Town touches Oakridge across Victoria Park Avenue in Scarborough, where seven other NIAs clump together south of Highway 401.

This happened to those neighbourhoods because industries left and a new wave of development never came.

The apartments got older, the traffic crawled, people in the houses aged, subways weren’t built and MoneyMarts thrived.

They became part of The Other Toronto.

Most often, most of us see

that second Toronto through a car window or on the news, in buildings glimpsed after a shooting, or roads after a pedestrian dies running for a bus.

But what happens in The Other Toronto should interest us as much as what happens on Queen Street or in Rosedale. It’s in this Toronto’s neighbourhoods where people on modest incomes can still afford to live.

We need to hear from people in these neighbourhoods, and in 2017, I’m going to do my best to talk to them about the city they live in.

More than 300 clients a year attend ESS’s adult day programs at its four Etobicoke and one Weston site.

"We try to create a natural environment that is non-medical, noninstitutional to address the needs of clients’ spirit, mind and body. We look at best practices and apply it to our therapy program," Catherine Grenaway, ESS’s director of client services, said of its adult day programs, which offers individual care plans.

"It allows caregivers to run to the doctor’s, get groceries done, the simple tasks we all take for granted that can be near impossible to do (when caring for someone with dementia)."

Business executive Kevin Jameson, founder, president and chair of the Dementia Society of America, flew in from Doylestown, PA to meet the women and

see ESS’s music therapy at work.

Recently, Jameson donated $1,000 to expand ESS’s music therapy program.

The Dementia Society of America believes dementia education, information and programs can enhance the lives of people living with the spectrum of dementias,

as well as that of their caregivers, and the community.

Jameson’s first wife, Ginny, died from dementia.

The couple had been together 32 years.

He is a keen believer in music therapy’s benefits among people with dementia.

"Music transcends," Jameson said. "Music uses different parts of the brain to help people with cognitive reserve. It’s no different than going to a country where you don’t speak the language and trying to figure it out. The language of people with dementia may be impaired, but there are other kinds of language, like music, touch, smiles."

The Alzheimer’s Association in the U.S. estimates more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. One in three American seniors will die with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, it states.

Perhaps the most-startling static: every 66 sec-

onds, someone in the U.S. develops Alzheimer’s, the association states.

Rather than shock Jameson, the statistics spur him to action to help more people with dementia and their families.

"We are where cancer was 50 years ago. Fifty years ago, it was the Cword. Now, it’s the D-word," Jameson said. "There is a lot of taboo. There is a lot of stigma. People are afraid if they mention it, they think they’re going to get it. On the flip side, there is maintaining and doing what you can for your own brain health. It’s a two-sided story."

Peggy Peacock, ESS’s day program co-ordinator at its Alderwood site, will soon be taking training, paid by Jameson, to further adapt a 13-DVD set, titled "Pathways, Making Connections by Singing: a Comprehensive Singing Program for Memory Care", to ESS’s day programs.

Currently, ESS splits its one 13-DVD Pathway set among its five sites. Jameson has offered to purchase them another set, which includes activity books and online training. It retails for $699.

While Wolfe felt moved to jump to her feet to the polka, two Italian women led enthusiastic singing, feet tapping, to "That’s Amore", another song on Pathways’ Journeys Europe DVD. "Some clients are very, very quiet. With a little music on the DVD or singing, they start singing and coming out with lyrics, even if they have difficulty speaking a sentence that makes sense," Peacock said.

"Music encourages speaking, singing, dancing and connecting, not just with our staff, but with other clients. We know music releases endorphins, and unlocks memory."

Lots to celebrate in 150 years It’s early January, and here we are: just days into the year that our country, the former Dominion of Canada, turns 150 years old.

In Toronto and across the land, we’re going to be partying like we’re 200.

We’ve already had a grand TO Canada With Love New Year’s Eve celebration at Nathan Phillips Square.

Winterlicious will be celebrating its 15th year and our 150th, serving up birthday-themed culinary experiences. There’ll be photo contests and dance contests and a Toronto Newcomer Day. And Canada Day will morph into a fourday party the likes of which we’ve never seen.

We’re not the first to reach this venerable age. In 1926, America’s 30th President Calvin Coolidge spoke at great length on the manifold virtues of that great, 150-year-old republic.

America at 150 was in the middle of its own version of

It didn’t last, of course - a decade of consistent economic growth ground to a halt in the crash of ’29, and the poverty that had been limited to rural areas spread to the urban middle class.

How are we, at 150?

Well, we’re in a better state than our 241-year-old neighbour is right now. We continue to welcome newcomers to our country and have maintained at least a public equanimity that seems to have eluded

America as it prepares to swear in its 45th President Donald Trump.

We do have a greater challenge before us than Coolidge apprehended when he confidently pointed to the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States as guarantees of both virtue and safety.

At 150, it’s fair to say that Canada alone cannot guarantee both those things.

We’re coming of age in a world where both national virtue, and safety and security are open questions. It’s not just the changes in the United States that affect us, but all over the world.

So as we prepare to celebrate this significant birthday, we should not only count our gifts. We should prepare to preserve them and perhaps, defend them.

Teens finish Youth In Policing Initiative fall program ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Sixty teens from across the city have finished a 17week paid internship with the Toronto Police Service.

Mayor John Tory and Deputy police Chief Michael Federico congratulated the youth during a graduation ceremony at the Toronto Police College on Birmingham Street in Etobicoke on Dec. 21.

The teens, ages 15 to 18, were assigned to various divisions and the mounted unit to gain job experience and life skills as part of the Youth In Policing Initiative’s (YIPI) fall program.

YIPI, a partnership between the police and the provincial Ministry of Children and Youth Services, was established in 2006.

"It’s been a fantastic success," police Chief Mark Saunders said in an interview. "It’s to develop stronger relationships with the members of the community, especially our neighbourhood improvement areas."

Some YIPI graduates

are now working in law enforcement in Toronto and other jurisdictions, the chief said.

"The men and women (of the police service)

learn a lot too. It really does break down a lot of layers of misconception, and it really does bring us closer to community," Saunders said. "When you

are face-to-face with somebody and you are actually speaking and learning from one another, it’s a lot harder to hate at the end of the day."

A third of Canadians admit to texting at red lights: CAA poll More than a third of Canadians have admitted to using their cell phones while stopped at a red light in the last month.

This data, released last month in a poll by the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA), is based on a survey of 2,012 Canadians, 33 per cent of whom said they used their phone at a red light.

"These numbers are troubling," said Jeff Walker, CAA National’s vice-president of public affairs in a release. The effect of texting at a red light lingers well after the light turns green, making it a dangerous driving habit."

Walker went on to say that while 70 per cent of Canadians are against the practice, a signifi-

cant number of people are still doing it.

"It’s socially unacceptable to drive drunk, and that’s where we need to get with texting," he said.

"Attitudes are beginning to shift, but our actions need to follow."

Volunteers needed for Indigenous Games The 2017 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) is looking for more than 2,000 volunteers when Toronto hosts the event this summer.

The Games will be held Sunday, July 16 to Sunday, July 23, bringing together 5,000 aboriginal youth from across North America to celebrate Indigenous culture and compete in a variety of traditional and non-traditional sports.

This will mark the first time in its 25year history the NAIG will be held outside of Western Canada.

More than 2,000 volunteers are needed in areas including: sport specialists, protocol, medal ceremonies, event services, medical, accreditation, opening and closing ceremonies, IT, photography, and French language speakers.

VolunteersNEW will be stationed at various venues across the Greater Toronto Area.

Margaret Laura Margaret, long time resident of Winterset Crescent, Etobicoke, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 26, 2016 in Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. She was 93 years old. Born on September 18, 1923 in Westbury-onTrym, Bristol, England, Margaret was the eldest daughter of William St. Clair Milton and Mildred Daisy Milton (nee Bill). Margaret is survived by her four children and nine grandchildren; eldest son, Nicholas David Coleman of Richmond Hill, his wife Julie and children Stephanie (Anthony Lazos), Melissa and Nicholas; Second son Richard John St. Clair Coleman of White Lake, his wife Beth and children Lindsay (Joel Semenchuk) and Mitchell; eldest daughter Jill Margaret Coleman of Toronto, her husband Brian Bawden and children Drew and Andrea; youngest child Teresa Elizabeth Laura Reid of White Rock, BC, her husband Stephen and children Matthew and Brooke.

Margaret is survived by her younger sister, Frances Baker of Derbyshire, England and was predeceased by her brother John Milton of Devon, England.

Margaret grew up in London, England and lived through the air raids of WW II. She always had a “torchâ€? (ashlight) on hand just in case the lights went out. In 1948, she married David Kenneth Coleman (deceased). Margaret and David were blessed with the birth of three children in England and the family was completed with the birth of their fourth child in Toronto. In 1959, the family moved to Canada making Etobicoke their new home. Margaret worked at the Toronto Public Library for many years and was referred to as “the voice of Richview Library.â€? One of the many gifts she bestowed on her children was the love of reading. An avid gardener, Margaret found great pleasure in tending her ower beds and enjoying the shade of the magniďŹ cent willow tree planted by her husband David. She enjoyed painting in water colours and left many treasures for family and friends. She was a wonderful baker and every Christmas her grandchildren looked forward to her signature sausage rolls. She was a prodigious Bridge player. In her later years, her wonderful “Bridge Ladiesâ€? provided her with more than just card playing, visiting often to lend companionship and support. Margaret had many friends, including her lifelong, dear friend Margaret Parker of Etobicoke.

Margaret was always independent and active. On her 90th birthday she impressed everyone by driving her car to visit the hairdresser and purchase a bottle of sherry, her beverage of choice, enjoyed best in a crystal glass with a bit of Stilton cheese.

As Margaret requested, private cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held in Etobicoke in August 2017.
