Etobicoke’s infamous House of Lancaster has officially been sold, according to a local city councillor.

Etobicoke-Lakeshore councillor Justin Di Ciano announced the news of the notorious strip club’s impending closure to constituents on Monday via his e-newsletter.

"People are very, very excited," Di Ciano said of the feedback his office has received since announcing the House of Lancaster’s closure "in the coming months."

"Yes, it’s a legitimate business that’s operated on The Queensway for a long time, but it’s also brought with it unintended consequences - and people are looking forward to change."

CHRIS SIMON chris.simon@simcoe.com The environment is a bit like an aging relative - everybody wants to keep it healthy, but there’s plenty of bickering on exactly how to do it.

At Innisfil’s Nantyr Shores Secondary School, the Enviroventure specialist high skills major program is shaping young minds around the notion they can still alter the course of the warming planet. The class is located in a portable, a few steps away from the school football field. The room is messy because it is teeming with teenagers more worried about saving the planet than tidying up their own world.

They have been working on models of sustainable homes and just returned from the Change Your World conference at York University.

A few inches of snow had fallen in the early hours of this spring day, covering grass shoots that had begun to pop up from the field. Within a day the snow was gone again, as the temperature fluctuated.

"At our school, we have a lot of environmentally conscious students," Grade 12 student Maegan Damianakis said. "We want to see things change; we don’t want to adapt to the crappy situation going on around us."

"We’re trying to speed up our processes, but it’s not going as fast as climate change," addedGrade 11 student Johnathan Purkis. "I’m hopeful for change."

The students believe that, if everyone pitches in, positive change can be achieved. However, many leading scientists seem less optimistic.

In the Greenhouse Gas Progress Report 2016, the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario noted climate change will be less severe here than in other areas of the world, but pushed the need to prepare for the inevitable changes ahead.

Climate change is already increasing the risk of wildfires, crippling cold-water fish habitats, stressing moose populations and helping invasive species flourish in Ontario. The outdoor winter sports season is shortening. Severe heat and drought have damaged crops and affected water supplies.

In 2015, carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere were the highest they’ve been in at least 800,000 years. While Ontario lowered its carbon footprint to six per cent

below 1990 levels in 2014, mostly through the closing of coal-fired power generating stations, it still relies on fossil fuels for 80 per cent of its energy. Transportation represents the largest and fastest growing share of emissions.

Blair Feltmate, head of the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation at the University of Waterloo, says the temperature is up, on average, 2 to 3C in southern Ontario, when compared to pre-industrial levels. For every 1C increase, the atmosphere holds seven per cent more moisture.

The result is more extreme weather, including microburst downpours and ice storms events communities across the province have experienced in re-

cent years.

"It is here to stay; it is irreversible," Feltmate said. "We can slow it down, which we should do, but it will not stop it. Climate change has happened, it is happening and it is going to continue to happen."

He says governments need to immediately adopt standards and polices that reflect the impact of climate change and ensure all new infrastructure and residential developments comply. Climate models can be used to determine future floodplains and larger water pipes should be installed during the construction of new subdivisions to lower the risk of future disaster.

"You cannot cheat this system. Every day we don’t adapt, frankly, is a day we don’t have."

At this current pace, Ontario could see average temperatures climb by another 3 to 4C within decades. While the majority of Ontario’s electricity is produced by nuclear, hydro and renewable sources - leaving no carbon footprint - and more energy efficient vehicles have been introduced in recent years, that good work is undone by gridlock on local roadways.

"All the energy efficiency has gone out the window by having people sit in traffic endlessly," Feltmate said. "We’ve just got too many people concentrated in one locality. Building a relief line on a subway or getting more GO Transit cars in the morning isn’t going to compensate for the fact we’re going to have another 1.3 million people in this region in the nottoo-distant future."

Federal, provincial and municipal governments have taken positive steps to address climate change, but action is about "damage control," rather than "righting the ship," he stressed.

Still, others say the little steps, when added up, will help humanity complete the race.

"I don’t think being hopeless is the solution," Enviroventure teacher Mark Gaynik said. "You got to think of what kind of world we want to live in. It’s important to advocate and be out there."

DENISE HARRIS denise.harris@sympatico.ca It was a common story in Etobicoke after the Second World War: the Depression, followed by six years of war, created a pent-up demand for housing which was exacerbated by the baby boom. Farmers’ sons found they could make more money, with less uncertainty, working in industry and offices than they could by farming. Developers were offering to buy farms at unprecedented high prices. Over time, one old farmhouse after another disappeared from the landscape.

However, one heritage farm house in Thistletown became a notable exception to this pattern. In 1955, it was rescued and rebuilt on a new site at 85 Yorkleigh Ave., southeast of Royal York Road and Lawrence Avenue West.

Aaron Barker and Mary Calvert came to Canada from Yorkshire in 1832 with their children. After living a while in Richmond Hill, they moved to Etobicoke in 1841 and leased a 100-acre

farm on the west side of Islington Avenue, south of the West Humber River.

They purchased the property in 1855 and soon after built the large, two-storey house of Humber River stone seen in the above photo. Ownership of the house known as "Llewellyn Hill" passed through the Barker generations, from Aaron and Mary, to Andrew and Mary, to Albert and Nellie, to Grant and Nita. Many of their siblings also purchased and operated farms in the area, and the Barkers ultimately owned over 500 acres of farmland and several houses in Thistletown village. Grant and Nita sold the original farm with its stone house to a developer, and in 1955 the house was scheduled for demolition so Thistletown Collegiate could be built on the site.

Meanwhile, Don and Elizabeth Strathdee - soonto-be-married teachers had been collecting early Canadian furniture and were looking for an old house to move to a two-acre vacant lot they had purchased on Yorkleigh Avenue. After hearing about

love with it instantly. The developer agreed to sell them the house for $500, as

long as it was removed from the property within two weeks. They decided to

use the stone and wood from the house to build a smaller home on their lot.

They found an architect willing to design a new house using old materials.

A demolition expert dismantled the house, piece by piece, labelling every part.

It took 35 truckloads to move the house, including 200 tons of stone, to the new location within two weeks.

The work of rebuilding began in June 1956. Don and Elizabeth married a month later, and moved into their new home on Thanksgiving weekend.

The new house is a bungalow, but the major rooms, including the farmhouse kitchen, were left intact. The old windows and front door were also used in the new house, capturing the feel of the original home in a beautiful treed setting, hidden from public view.

Barker family farm from Thistletown finds new life

Connect Hearing, with a leading hearing researcher at Ryerson University, seeks participants for a hearing study investigating the factors that can influence better hearing. All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge. The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve life-changing hearing healthcare across Canada.

By studying those people having difficulty in noise or with television, we hope to identify key factors impacting these difficulties and further understand their influence on the treatment process.

Why Research Hearing Loss?

For some people this loss of clarity is only a problem at noisy restaurants or in the car, but for others it makes listening a struggle throughout the entire day.

Election year budget will be a tough one Another year, another squeeze.

That’s the message from Toronto’s City Manager Peter Wallace as councillors get set to dig into the 2018 budget. It’s going to be the last budget that Toronto Council and Mayor John Tory approve before they go to the voters in the fall of next year. And while it’s looking a little easier than last year in some ways, in important ways it’s going to be more difficult than ever.

Like last year, Wallace has asked for across-theboard restraint from city departments and agencies.

Not a 2.6 per cent cut this time, just a freeze in spending at 2017 levels. When he spoke to Toronto’s budget committee May 11, he made it very clear that he didn’t expect every department to come in with a zero spending increase. But it’s important to try.

That’s because, he noted, there is very little wiggle room this year for council to increase spending beyond inflation, and maintain a property tax increase at or below the rate of inflation. And Mayor Tory and council have made it clear that there’s no appetite for an increase any higher than that on property taxpayers.

Council made use of that wiggle room in 2017 – among other things, approving a budget that anticipated robust increases in the revenue from the municipal land transfer tax and therefore boosted revenue.

That was a good bet in 2017 but not necessarily so in 2018, when market-cooling measures approved at Queen’s Park could put a damper on Toronto’s blazing hot real estate market. Wallace has been warning since his arrival that Toronto’s reliance on an ever-growing land transfer tax could eventually be its fiscal undoing.

That warning seems more apt than ever right now.

It all leads to exactly the kind of debate that survival-minded politicians don’t want to have coming up to an election: do we cut services or raise taxes?

In the past, faced with these choices city politicians have had a third option: extend a begging hand to the provincial government for help to balance the books at the last minute. But again, what worked 10 years ago is less likely to work now, with the Ontario Liberals facing their own day of reckoning with Ontario voters in 2018.

In 2018, there’s one more option: have an honest conversation with taxpayers about the type of city they want to live in. Explain what that city costs.

And then, hand them a bill and a ballot at the same time.

A reckoning may come for our worst landlords The front of 500 Dawes Rd. is a busy place during dinner hours. People are in and out with children, dogs, groceries, deliveries.

But this East York building is known across the city as one of the worst in Toronto, a reputation it’s had for years.

That’s an opinion you can base on the hundreds of orders the city issued against the management of 500 Dawes, a management reluctant to fix anything the right way.

Janet Davis, local councillor, stood in the lobby last week, asking passing tenants about repairs, letting them know they can call 311 about them. She does this in other buildings, but 500 Dawes "is the No. 1."

That may change. A reckoning may come for bad Toronto landlords, because on July 1 a new bylaw goes into effect.

Landlords must give the city plans on repair, pest control, maintenance. They’ll be required to post information too: the lobby corkboard at 500 Dawes will have to hold more than redirected mail and flyers for airport taxis.

Until now, the city could pressure landlords, but had no hammer. Soon, it will be more expensive for them to ignore the law, says Geordie Dent of the Federation of Metro Ten-

ants’ Associations.

"It’s not like July 1 bing - a magic wand is going to be waved," he says, but the new bylaw comes with penalties.

"This building is definitely, definitely on the radar."

Tenant activists fought desperately for the new bylaw. Many, like Geri Stevens, paid a price.

She’s been active since 2011 in 500 Dawes, and she’s leaving soon, worn out. "It’s a horrible, horrible building," says Stevens.

Cheap rents are why many tenants stay. If there was any justice, many wouldn’t have to.

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet.

The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.”

But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly!

Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies.

And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.”

"I think people need to know about medical cannabis as an option," Marks de Chabris said, adding it is an "adjunct medicine" to other medications. "It’s not for everyone. It’s not a panacea. For people it seems to help, it helps.

"What we have right now isn’t great. The best medications, you get about 30 to 50 per cent reduction in pain and some improved function. More options, particularly with low side-effects and no risk of a fatal outcome, are beneficial."

Over the next month, Toronto will begin aerial spraying of insecticide to deal with an infestation of Gypsy Moth larvae that is too massive to deal with through mechanical and ground-based spraying.

City staff have been surveying egg levels in neighbourhoods across the city, and found that in west Toronto the infestation is so great that gentler methods won’t work. The moths’ larvae can defoliate trees to the point where they’re vulnerable to weather and other infestations.

From May 18 to June 10, the city will be spraying an insecticide via helicopter in the following neighbourhoods, between 5 a.m.

and 7:30 a.m. daily.

"You could say, ’I’ve tried sever-

al medications for my back pain or neck pain or rheumatoid arthritis.

Are you open to a trial of medical cannabis for a few months?’ If your physician isn’t open to it, reassure him or her. ’I won’t ever get in a car within four hours of using.

The risk of addiction is nine per cent, about the same as caffeine.

I’ve never been addicted before.’

Make your doctor more comfortable and get them onside."

Stigma surrounding medical cannabis "is fading," Marks de Chabris said.

"I’m being amused and surprised by some of my patients.

Twenty years ago, patients in their 60s would never tell their family physician they wanted to try medical cannabis."

Man charged in south Etobicoke holdup spree CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com A 40-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a series of holdup robberies in south Etobicoke.

Toronto police allege that between April and May of this year, a barefaced man entered a number of convenience stores in the 22 Division area posing as a customer.

The accused would then allegedly approach the lone victim at the service counter when no customers were inside the store,

produce a large knife, and make a demand for money at knifepoint.

In each of the instances, the suspect reportedly fled the scene in a getaway vehicle parked nearby.

On Wednesday, May 10, police observed a man operating a vehicle matching the description of the getaway car.

Tomasz Burzawa, 40, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with five armed robberies in the Lake Shore Boulevard West area of south on Etobicoke, and one robbery

Lakeshore Boulevard in Mississauga.

He was charged with five counts of robbery with an offensive weapon, five counts of possession of a weapon, and robbery.

He appeared in court on Thursday, May 11.

Julius Palladino, chair of the Etobicoke Track steering committee, called the open house a chance to celebrate the club’s "long association" with Centennial Park Stadium - its home for the last 50 years.

"Our club has been a successful one - we’ve had a dozen Olympic athletes, lots of national and provincial champions, and countless numbers of high school champions over the years," he said of Etobicoke Track, which is comprised of both the Etobicoke Huskies/Striders and the Gladstone track and field clubs.

Some of Etobicoke Track’s most notable alumni include: Olympic marathoner Sylvia Ruegger, who placed eighth at the 1984 Los Angeles Games; Olympian Nicole Devonish, a longtime holder of the Canadian women’s long jump record (19962013); Arturo Huerta, a two-time Olympic racewalker who won silver at the 1998 Commonwealth Games; and Olympic sprinter Foy Williams, a four-time Canadian champion in the 400-metre dash, among many others.

Despite that track record of success, Palladino said the not-for-profit club has remained committed to its original vision statement to "create a performance-focused environment, conducive to the development of track and

"We’ve always kept our local flavour as a community-oriented club that welcomes everyone, no matter their age or ability," he said.

Etobicoke Track, he added, boasts an annual membership of about 200 athletes ranging in age from six to 86, who participate in a range of track and field events from "cross country running, hurdles and sprints, to high jump, long jump, triple jump and throws".

Many of those athletes, along with their coaches, will be on hand at the May 27 open house event to highlight Etobicoke Track’s wide range of programming - including an upcoming summer sports camp, said board member Karen Ann Johnson.

"We’ll also have some board members there to give tours and answer

questions for people," said Johnson, who’s organizing the open house.

"We’re hoping parents can come out along with their kids who are looking to improve their track skills. If you’re interested in running at all or any of the field events, that’s what our coaches do, so come on out and see what it’s all about."

Palladino said he hopes the open house will help raise some awareness in the community about what Etobicoke Track has to offer right here in the community.

"It’s amazing how many people don’t even know that there’s a track here (at Centennial Park)," he said.

"We’ve been here 50 years, we’re happy to be here, and we hope to be here another 50 years."

While it is not yet known what plans the House of Lancaster’s new owners have for the site, Di Ciano said he "highly doubts" it will be a highrise application.

"It’ll hopefully be something everybody can work with, so we can move on to chapter two of The Queensway’s redesign," he said.

A lot of rain – and losses – has not put a damper on the debut of Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic Secondary School’s first ever coed field lacrosse team.

“We got all our equipment and our jerseys the day before our first tournament. Nobody had ever played with equipment before,” said Kaitlyn Cooke, 15, who helped kick off the team along with an assist from the lacrosse community via social media.

In their first two rainfilled tournaments, the team went winless in six games.

“But we did better than expected," said Kaitlyn, an experienced rep player who has suited up for four years with the Mimico Mountaineers rep program. "We expected to lose in the double digits. We know it’s just for fun. The players don’t take it hard on themselves. We’ve improved so much every practice since day one.”

Kaitlyn helps run the team through drills on a sunny May afternoon.

Her teammates call her captain.

“When we face a lot of the other teams, they’re shocked to see me,” she said of being the only female player.

Months ago, Kaitlyn championed a Johnson lacrosse team to Tullio Taccone, the school’s athletic director.

He said she could start a team — if she got the equipment.

So she did.

Kaitlyn told her lifelong lacrosse-playing dad, Chris, an elite, semipro lacrosse goalie with Six Nations in Caledonia.

Chris wrote a Facebook post seeking used equipment.

nations poured in, then floor time donated by The Barn Elite Performance Centre in Oshawa, Ont. The Johnson Jaguars was born of the Kaitlyn Cup lacrosse tournament, which netted approximately $3,000 and used equipment.

“The lacrosse community is a family. It’s like no other sport.

That’s why I encouraged my kids to get into it,” Chris said in an earlier interview of Kaitlyn, and her younger brother, Joshua, 11, who plays box lacrosse.

A friend who works at ILA Sports in Six Nations provided new equipment at a discount.

Coach Elio Vigilanti, Johnson resource teacher and school hockey coach, said the team is showing promise.

“The kids have been great about it,” he said.

“They’re learning as a group, as am I. They support each other, work hard. I can see improvement.”

Vigilanti said he reminded the Jaguars it took time for Johnson’s hockey team to win games, and eventually win at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations’ championships.

The Jaguars’ coach had high praise for Kaitlyn.

“I can’t say enough about her,” he said. “She spearheaded this. It’s her will and determination that created this team.

All the guys look up to her.”

Midfielder Ethan Amero, a Johnson hockey player, plans to play again next year.

“It has been fun,” the Grade 11 student said.

“Each game, we’ve gotten a lot better. Just being able to see the field, the contact; it takes a lot of teamwork just like hockey.”

Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Notice of Study Completion The City of Toronto has completed a comprehensive Transportation Master Plan (TMP) and Servicing Master Plan (SMP) to address transportation and infrastructure needs in the Sherway Gardens area bounded by the CP Rail Corridor, Highway 427, the QEW and Etobicoke Creek. The TMP and SMP are in accordance with Phases 1 and 2 of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process and complement the Sherway Area Study, which recommends a preferred land use and built form scenario.

The purpose of an Area Study is to identify a vision and implementation strategy to guide future development in this area, in keeping with the planning objectives of the City of Toronto's Official Plan. The Area Study consultant report has been submitted which recommends a preferred land use and built form option.

Alternative transportation planning and servicing solutions were identified and evaluated against a set of criteria. The TMP and SMP set out recommended phasing and future environmental assessment work to support a preferred solution identified through this analysis.

In long scold of Wynne It had been getting repetitive, Mayor John Tory’s extended scolding of Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, and in retrospect, something had to give.

That something gave last week, when Tory abruptly withdrew his most politically destructive threat - to block planning on the extension of the Yonge Street subway into York Region, if the province didn’t cough up the cash to build the downtown relief subway line.

The threat was credible and potentially devastating, at least politically. There are Liberal seats to the north of Toronto, and it would be better for them to have the promise of a subway.

And the promise of the Yonge subway extension from Finch past Steeles to Highway 407 is a longtime hope for York Region and Richmond Hill in particular - an opportunity to duplicate the kind of development that the York subway extension has made possible in

It would also, on its own, be a mess for 416 subway riders. By the time the trains from Richmond Hill got to Bloor, it would be impossible - without at least a relief line drawing Line 2 riders downtown by some other route.

Blocking the Yonge extension - or at least threatening to -makes a bit of sense, and it certainly is an attention-getter.

It certainly got the attention of Tory’s peers up in York Region. On Monday, he sat down with Mayors Frank

Scarpetti (Markham) and Dave Barrow (Richmond Hill) along with York Region Chair Wayne Emmerson to turn the heat down a bit, and maybe forge an alliance.

In return for his support of the Yonge line, the three leaders from the north of Toronto have agreed to champion the downtown relief line and implicitly, take a great deal of heat off Wynne in the next election.

Will Tory fare better with his new allies and a more conciliatory discourse? He might just.

Of course, we might also find ourselves with a longer, overcrowded Yonge line and no DRL. Hopefully that’s not what finally gives.
