One-day History on the Humber event takes place Aug. 5 in Étienne Brûlé Park CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com A freedom-seeking former slave. A pioneer of Canadian photography. An influential Junction journalist. And the visionary artist who inspired the Group of Seven. Joshua Glover, Geraldine Moodie, A.B. Rice and Tom Thomson are just a few of the real-life, west-end historical characters those taking a Saturday afternoon stroll along the banks of the Humber River can expect to bump into on Aug. 5, thanks to Walk the 6 West: History on the Humber. The one-day, part-walking-tour, part-theatricalevent comes to Étienne Brûlé Park courtesy of six local history groups, including Heritage York and the Swansea, Sunnyside, York Pioneer, West Toronto Junction and Etobicoke Historical Society (EHS), said EHS’s Hugh Barnett, who helped co-organize the event alongside Heritage York’s Joy Cohnstaedt. "What’s exciting about it is there seems to be a huge demand for this kind of public programming that bridges the professional arts with local heritage," Barnett said during an interview at Étienne Brûlé Park last week, noting that just one week after opening up registration, organizers already had more than 100 RSVPs from interested attendees. While the "living history" concept behind the upcoming Walk the 6 theatrical walking tour isn’t an entirely new one, Barnett said he hopes the event will help to spawn similar programs that continue to bring history to life here in Toronto. "In 2015, we did a program

Dan Pearce/Metroland

Neil Ross, (left), Eileen Jensen, Colin Mendez Morris and Sara Moyle will perform in the Walk the 6 West: History on the Humber event on Aug. 5. The event is a one-day theatrical event/guided walking tour in Etienne Brule Park where participants will meet some of the personalities from West Toronto’s past along the walk, including Tom Thomson, Geraldine Moodie, Joshua Glover, Sir William Howland, Pauline Johnson, A.B. Rice, Anne Leung, Mrs. Brown. commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Francophone presence in Toronto during the Pan Am Games, where we ran a series of vignettes detailing the history along the Toronto Carrying Place," Barnett said, noting that program served as inspiration for organizers of Walk the 6. "Hopefully, (Walk the 6) can likewise act as a launching point for other similar types of programs, because I think it’s definitely something that can be brought back." Both Sara Moyle, the former artistic producer of

Humber River Shakespeare, and Colin Mendez Morris, musical director for ArsMusica, performed in that original 2015 Pan Am program. And both will now return to the banks of the Humber for Walk the 6 - Moyle to perform as Canadian artist Tom Thomson, and Mendez Morris to bring his new opera composition on escaped slave Joshua Glover to life. "This park is in my blood and in my system," said Moyle, an Etobicoke bornand-raised actor who will tackle the "mysterious and enigmatic" Thomson’s days

as a young, emerging artist in her 10-minute installation. "This has been a really wonderful process for me, because I spend my time here on the Humber during the year and my summers in Algonquin and Killarney. So, very much like Tom, I have a bipolar existence as an artist, so it’s been interesting to explore that." Mendez Morris, meanwhile, will merge opera with the outdoors - complete with a string quartet and guest clarinetist from Italy - when ArsMusica brings his opera about escaped slave Joshua

Glover’s journey from St. Louis to Toronto via the Underground Railroad to Étienne Brûlé Park. "The whole idea was we wanted to give audiences as much of the operatic experience as we could, even though it’s an outdoor performance," he said of his piece’s impressive musical accompaniment. "Personally, I’m finding it fascinating to tie this performance to history - especially when you get the chance to actually work somewhere where this person (Joshua Glover) actually walked and spoke and lived, it makes it

that much more special." Walk the 6 will also act as the première for Neil Ross’ show, Canadian Junction: Town, City and Country - an original play about three historical characters from West Toronto Junction that Ross wrote based on the walking tours he’s been leading in the Junction neighbourhood for nearly a decade. While Ross himself will take on the role of A.B. Rice, a journalist who covered the Junction for 60 years, Eileen Jensen will play Jamaicanborn businesswoman and philanthropist Julia Browne, and Amanda Zhou will be playing Anne Leung, a Chinese woman who broke the colour barrier at a downtown Toronto cinema. Walk the 6 will also feature performances by Cheri Maracle (as Pauline Johnson), Michael Toby (as Joshua Glover), Jan Weir (as Sir William Howland), and members of the Mixed Theatre Company. Supporters include the City of Toronto’s MomenTO Canada 150 program, which is providing promotional support for Walk the 6, and the province’s Ontario 150 Community Celebration Grant Program, which is providing its funding. Walk the 6: History on the Humber takes place on Saturday, Aug. 5, with simultaneous, one-and-a-half hour guided walking tours departing from both Lambton House, 4066 Old Dundas St., and Old Mill subway station, 2672 Bloor St. W., at noon and again at 2:30 p.m. For more information or to reserve your free tickets, go to www.pvhs.info/historyonthehumber or call 647675-1792.

OLG Woodbine Workers

D E

K C

O L

insidetoronto.com

TORONTO - Over 400 workers employed at the OLG Slots at Woodbine have been locked out since Friday July 14, 2017. A segment of the workforce is at, or close to, the Liberal government’s proposed minimum wage increase of $15. Approximately 60 per cent of the workforce is part-time, with precarious hours, meaning no work life balance for most of the employees. Despite the Wynne’s government’s claim to address precarious work, the OLG, a crown corporation, is part of the problem. With over half a billion dollars in profit last year alone, the OLG’s Woodbine site is the most profitable facility in Ontario and yet its workers are struggling to make ends meet. Workers are also being kicked out of a good public pension as a direct result of the OLG’s Modernization Plan. The plan calls for a private new service operator to take over operations at Woodbine. The Wynne Liberal government is awarding a 20 year contract that will give an undisclosed amount of future profits to a private operator, thus taking away employees their status as public service workers, and removing their pension language from their current existing collective agreement.

! T

U O

“We’ve seen the OLG lockout workers at Brantford, Sudbury, Rideau Carleton and at Woodbine,” states Sharon DeSousa, PSAC Ontario Regional Executive Vice-President. “This potential labour disruption is consistent with the pattern that has emerged with the OLG’s privatization scheme and puts into question their sincerity in negotiating a fair agreement with their workers.”

Wanted: old editions, 100th birthdays, and wedding anniversaries The Etobicoke Guardian is marking its 100th year of news service in 2017 with a history that dates back to the Lakeshore Advertiser in 1917. We’re working on a commemorative project to celebrate, but need

help from our readers. We’re looking for few things: Do you have copies of the Lakeshore Advertiser published prior to 1925? The Toronto Library Archives’ microfilm for the Advertiser only goes back to 1925. We’d love to see earlier editions if you have any hiding in your attic! Do we have anyone celebrating a 100th birthday this year who grew up in Etobicoke? Please send name, birthday, approximate location where he

or she grew up in Etobicoke, and a photo from their youth. We’re looking for couples from Etobicoke who may be celebrating a 60th+ wedding anniversary this fall/winter. If you were living in Etobicoke when you were married, please send a digital copy of your wedding photo, your wedding date, and where you got married. Email Editor-in-Chief Grace Peacock at gpeacock@insidetoronto.com if you can assist.

EDITORIAL | OPINION

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

Toronto needs help dealing with legalized weed Drugs cost money. This is a universal truth: whether it’s the legal kind like alcohol or tobacco, or the banned stuff like cocaine or heroin, or, for now, marijuana, a habit is going to take a chunk out of anyone’s paycheque in addition to their life expectancy. As it is with us as frail individuals, so it is with the governments we elect, when we make the choice to turn on the tap - or light the pipe - of legalized intoxicants. And when legalized marijuana becomes a reality in Canada next year, it’s going to cost money. Last week, Mayor John Tory pointed this out, in the latest of a series of letters to Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. Tory made the point as he was insisting that Toronto be heavily-involved in any of the decisions regarding implementing that legalization. Much of those decisions will come at a provincial level - notably, how and where the drug is sold, what the minimum age will be for purchasing marijuana, and so on. For Toronto, it’s particularly important to regulate where and how marijuana is sold. We know here from bitter experience with illegal dispensaries that relatively unregulated sales will go badly. The province should make sure that the sale of marijuana takes place well away from schools and community centres, and other places where young people and the vulnerable congregate. Although Tory didn’t mention it in his letter, the federal government would also do well to take a cue from Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen De Villa, who earlier this year wrote a report calling for the immediate decriminalization of marijuana. De Villa noted that many of the problems that the city is having now with illegal dispensaries would go away with an immediate legalization and subsequent regulation. But that is not to say that legalization, now or next year, will solve all of our problems. Tory notes that Dr. De Villa and Toronto’s health department will be very busy as marijuana use becomes more widespread, dealing with the very real public health issues that arise from use, and inevitable overuse, of the drug. The city will inevitably be involved in providing inspections and regulating locations. Police will take on new and potentially costly roles. Tory’s suggestion that the cost of those services come out of provincial tax on marijuana is a sensible one. The fallout of legalization will cost money, and it only makes sense that those who choose to use foot the bill.

Scarborough’s shoreline belongs to everyone The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) has a collective headache coming this Friday as they vote on a new shoreline park. The Scarborough Waterfront Project will be monumental if it’s ever built. People will go to Bluffers Park Beach, and realize they can walk or bike from there to Pickering. They could visit Guild Park, Highland Creek, or the Rouge River. Most of the park already exists, You walk down Bellamy Ravine, see Marlene Hilton Moore’s steel statue, Passages, and the road below the Scarborough Bluffs stretches east. There’s landslide danger, especially this year, but the water’s blue, the bluffs lovely. People, most-

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto ly local, go every weekend. But now that the TRCA wants to finish the park spending perhaps $170 million - self-appointed defenders of the bluffs and beaches call the plan "malevolent," saying it’ll destroy sandy beaches "teaming with rare flora and fauna." On Friday, the TRCA board will listen as they paint their cause green. Hardening a shoreline

with stones to stop erosion doesn’t wipe out ecosystems. I walked Port Union Waterfront Park, which would connect to this one, after it opened. A mink darted across rocks. I saw killdeer, a gopher. I heard green frogs. The place was artificial, and hardened, but not devoid of life. The Authority says the two sandy beaches in question, one of which it will preserve, can only be accessed now by crossing private lands on homemade paths trampling sensitive vegetation. The new park will give visitors safe, legal access. But access shouldn’t just be for the few. There’s something unspoken in Scarborough: people living north of

Kingston Road aren’t supposed to go south of it. There’s no TTC bus to Bluffers. In summer, the lots fill. It’s a favourite ticketing spot. Legal parking anywhere around the bluffs is scarce, as if the city wants to discourage visitors. We hear about selfieseeking yahoos on the bluffs, the litter and campfires. But many Torontonians never go, and should. Scarborough’s shoreline and bluffs doesn’t just belong to people who live there. They belong to me, and they belong to everyone in Greater Toronto who wants to wander through public land. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

EDUCATION

Students step up their tech skills with STEM Minister of Science Kirsty Duncan drops in to talk science with kids

insidetoronto.com

TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Six-year-old Roshayla Owens focuses on attaching the small, red plastic wheels with sticks to her cardboard car. It’s summer vacation. But school’s in for Roshayla and approximately 40 Elmbank Junior Middle Academy students in grades 1 to 8 who attended a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) camp recently at the Finch Avenue West and Martin Grove Road area school. "We make a lot of cool stuff. We made a train yesterday and a paper airplane," said Roshayla, who is in Grade 1. Roshayla said she likes math: "I got an A+ in math on my report card. I like math. It’s easy." The University of Toronto Engineering Outreach office’s ENGage in Your Community weeklong summer camp is intended to encourage STEM literacy while having fun. Actua, a national charity that provides STEM educational programs to students, stopped by the Finch Avenue West and Martin Grove Road elementary school last Friday. The Actua team is halfway through its nation-wide travelling science and technology workshops and exhibitions called Innovation150 tour, which is supported by a Canadian government grant. Ean Gutierrez, 7, got busy making the car. "We made boats, airplanes and a house. We’re doing temperature today to see if it’s going to be hot or cold," he said of the weather station students would program with a microcontroller and coding. "Whoever’s station stays cold wins." Science Minister Kirsty

Top, Science Minister Kirsty Duncan works with grades 5 and 6 students to improve stability in popsicle stick structures during the ENGage in Your Community STEM camp at Elmbank Junior Middle Academy. Right, Eashan Punsammy, 8, (left), Sheena Sukhdeo, 9, and Sana Mwafi, 7, work with leader Sean Lee to build paper plate hovercraft. The University of Toronto engineering outreach initiative aims to inspire youngsters in the science, technology, ebngineering and mathematics fields. Staff/Metroland

Duncan dropped in on grades 1 and 2 students to observe their STEM camp fun. "Science can take you on an adventure," said Duncan, Canada’s first minister of science, who is the area’s Liberal MP, as she sat down to talk with three Grade 2 girls. "I got to go almost to the North Pole and lead an expedition." Duncan is a former scientist, medical geographer and associate professor of

health science at U of T who holds a PhD in geography. In the late 1990s, she led an international expedition to find frozen samples of the 1918 Spanish flu. Duncan’s mandate as federal science minister involves the creation of a chief science officer to ensure scientists may speak freely about their work; the review and reform of Canada’s environmental assessment processes to ensure decisions are based on sci-

ence, facts and evidence; and supporting the employment minister to create more student co-op placements in STEM, and business programs. Duncan then spoke with the girls about Koko the female gorilla, known for having learned sign language. The girls knew much about Koko, including that she understood as many as 800 signs. "Do we love science?" Duncan asked the girls. All

but one nodded. "Do you want to be scientists or go into space or be engineers when you grow up?" Two girls said they want to be teachers; the other wants to be an artist. Principal Aldona Volunge said the STEM camp helps students who may struggle in those subjects to gain confidence. "We’re trying to engage their interest in those subjects," Volunge said. "If they say, ’boy, look what I

can do with math, look what I can do with science,’ it’s a great motivator." STEM camp might also spark students’ future career aspirations, she added, noting studies show students start thinking about a career as early as grades 4 and 5. "Young people will become the decision-makers in society," Volunge said. "Whether it’s climate change or the effects of chemicals on the body, the more kids we can get interested in it (the better). We need scientists and engineers." ENGage is a collaboration between the University of Toronto’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers and the university’s Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. Dawn Britton, associate director of the University of Toronto’s Engineering Outreach office, said ENGage aims to help kids feel more comfortable and competent in science, math and engineering. "The idea is to get kids excited about math, science and engineering, and also to expose them to things they’re not necessarily exposed to in the classroom," Britton said, noting U of T engineering undergrad students act as ENGage mentors. "We want them to talk with their family and friends about what they learned while having fun. It’s kind of disguising math. At the end of the day, they were doing calculus and probability. Who knew?" It is the first year the ENGage STEM summer camps are being offered at U of T’s campus and in Toronto public schools, Britton added. "Principals here are leading a STEM movement to get kids in the area interested in science, technology and engineering," Britton said. This week, U of T’s ENGage STEM camp is taking place down the street from Elmbank at Greenholme Junior Middle School in Jamestown.

Forest Hill opens first Etobicoke office Forest Hill Real Estate Realtors, Diana Quinn and Leila Talibova, celebrated their new office with a grand opening for the community. On July 22, guests visited the new location and enjoyed an ice cream truck, entertainment for children, a DJ, free food and a lemonade stand raising money for Women’s Habitat. “We’re exciteed to be involved with this community and it’s important to us to support our neighbours, says Quinn. The new office is the 20th location for Forest Hill Real Estate, a group that is known across Ontario as the first stop for luxury and distinctive real estate. Etobicoke was chosen because of the vibrant culture, history and endless opportunities. Forest Hill Real Estate Realtors use a new approach when helping local buyers and sellers. When a potential client chooses to work with a Realtor in the office, they’re hiring the entire team. “We have the most real estate thinking under

They are experts in many fields: preconstuction, residential, income-producing properties, property management and more. This has created more of a resource centre than a typical real estate office. “We think we can learn a lot from the community and would love to meet our new neighbours. Diamond Realty gives back with golf On Tuesday, July 11, The Diamond Realty hosted its 10th Annual Charity Golf Tournament at the Royal Ontario Golf Club in Mississauga. With over 75 players and 15 sponsors, Diamond Realty raised funds for the Sick Kids Foundation. The tournament was first established in 2007 when Diamond Realty agent Manuel Carvalho approached Broker of Record Gary Chahinian with the idea of supporting the foundation as an office. Carvalho’s close connection to the foundation began when his son, Michael, was admitted to the hospital at the age of four for open heart surgery. He says most parents at the hospital feel helpless, but having such dedicated doctors and 24-hour on-call nurses makes the experience much more manageable. “It was unbelievable, he says. “We’re really lucky to have such an amazing hospital in our own backyard. Carvalho also says that during Michael’s stay at the hospital, a nurse visited with a therapy dog to help lift the spirits of the children. Carvalho says he saw his son completely transform for the better when he pet the dog. The boy was discharged a few days later. Once they were home, Michael asked his father for a similar dog. Carvalho adopted a dog and decided to find a way to give back to the hospital. While brainstorming charity ideas, Carvalho and Chahinian decided on a golf tournament be-

cause golfing was one of Carvalho’s favourite hobbies. Chahinian was happy to support the cause. Michael’s surgery took place 10 years ago, but the group’s support isn’t slowing down. “We are all so blessed that giving back to the kids is the least we can do, says Chahinian. After a sunny afternoon of golfing, participants made their way to the Portuguese Cultural Centre for a steak and seafood dinner which was followed by a short awards ceremony. The winners of the 50/50 putting contest, Best Foursome, Most Honest Foursome and the Longest Drive for Men and Women were acknowledged. An extra $250 was also raised through a live auction of a large leg of prosciutto after the dinner. Chahinian and Carvalho are looking forward to hosting another tournament next year and, potentially, a walkathon in the fall.

Wartime homes built for workers and soldiers DENISE HARRIS denise.harris@sympatico.ca Tucked away northwest of the intersection of The Queensway and Royal York Road is a pleasant family neighbourhood named Queensway Park, with interesting circular streets and cul-de-sacs, and about 200 homes surrounding a large park with the same name. Although many of the homes have been altered over the years, there is still an obvious connection among them for they were all originally small residences, many painted white, built in 1945-46 from federal government-provided floor plans. Over all, 46,000 similar homes were built across Canada, during and after the Second World War, by the Wartime Housing Corporation (which became the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation in 1946.) Initially these homes were built to house people working in war-related industry. A small number of these houses were built in 1943 in the Alderwood area of Etobicoke (west of Brown’s Line and south of Woodbury Road) for workers at the Small Arms Company in Lakeview (now Mississauga). However, as the Second World War was ending, larger neighbourhoods

were built to fill a growing need to house returning veterans and their families. The homes in Queensway Park are typical of those built for returning soldiers: one-and-a-half storeys, steeply-pitched roofs, clapboard walls, small sash windows, and small metal chimney stacks. Inside, the main floor often had a living room, kitchen with dining area, bathroom and one bedroom, while the upstairs had two more bedrooms. This architectural style has been referred to as "Simplified Cape Cod" or "Strawberry Box." A similar neighbourhood was built in East York, northwest of Victoria Park Avenue and St. Clair Avenue East. Like the one in Etobicoke, it has curving streets, cul-de-sacs, and a large park named Topham Park after Victoria Cross winner Corporal Frederick Topham. Topham also has an Etobicoke connection as he is buried in Sanctuary Park cemetery on Royal York Road. One corner of Topham Park has been dubbed "Sunshine Valley" because when a local bus driver named Mac stopped there, he always called, "All out for Sunshine Valley," a reference to an early lack of trees. Wartime housing was

also built in North York near Jane Street and Trethewey Drive. This development is known as "The Wishbone" after an unusually laid-out street of the same name. In Scarborough, wartime housing consisted of dormitories constructed in 1941 for the many employees - primarily women - doing munitions work at the General Engineering Company (GECO) near Warden Avenue and Eglinton Avenue East. Today, despite renovations over the years, most of the houses in Queensway Park still display their original cosy feel. These residences are well-maintained and much loved by the families which inhabit them. Some owners have planted Victory Rose Gardens in remembrance of the circumstances that created their neighbourhood. The importance these modest houses hold within the context of Canadian history was acknowledged by Canada Post in 1998 when they featured the humble "Veteran’s House" on a stamp. Stripped down:

The House of Lancaster serves its last dance on The Queensway

Love it or hate it, the House of Lancaster maintained a controversial presence in Etobicoke for 35 years, introducing a steady stream of strippers to a steady stream of paying customers. This month the so-called ’gentlemen’s club’ closed its doors for good. The Guardian’s David Nickle talked to its owner about his life in the strip-bar business, pushing the boundaries of law, politics and public mores. DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com The photograph is one of maybe a dozen, for the moment resting in a stack against the wall near the side door to the parking lot of the House of Lancaster’s Queensway location. A week earlier, it would have been hanging on that wall: a black-and-white photograph of handsome young Spiro Koumoudouros, standing alongside his departed brother Terry, and the beaming, bikinisporting women competing in Miss Nude House of Lancaster 1983. It is 2017, mid-July, and that picture won’t be there for long. The House of Lancaster at The Queensway and Royal York Boulevard has closed its doors for good. Spiro, in his 70s now, is supervising a crew of workers tearing away the fixtures, appliances and decor that can be salvaged. The club, where men have come to watch women dance naked for nearly 35 years, will likely be demolished before long, as its new owner, Parallax Investment Corporation, prepares to erect a townhouse development. "Take a picture with this," says Spiro, lifting the photo and stepping under one of the few remaining lights in the dark hall to pose, so the reporter who’s come to talk to him about the end of an era can get a good shot.

insidetoronto.com

The House of Lancaster is leaving south Etobicoke under something of a cloud. There have been at least three shootings there, or near there, since 2013 and Spiro explains ruefully that the decision to finally leave the site came in part as a result of increasing pressure from city bylaw officers and police presence that may have followed from that. So, he sold the place after trying and failing to negotiate his own redevelopment of the land with the city, and will be continuing the business at what for years had been the second Lancaster location, House of Lancaster 2, on Bloor Street West - hopefully, without a fight. It has been a fight for many years, for Spiro and his late brother Terry to build and maintain their strip club business in a city that has rarely welcomed it. "I’m a Spartan, and the Spartans, they are warriors," says Spiro, settling in to tell a story that he has told many times before: of how he and his older brother Terry came from Greece in the early 1960s, to start to

The property, located on The Queensway, has been sold and will be redeveloped into town homes. make a living in the restaurant business. The two began in 1964, starting up the Queen Steak and Burger at Kipling and Dundas and working around the clock to make a go of it. After a few years, they decided it was time to move up, and started a lunch counter in the basement of an office tower at University Avenue and Wellington Street. They wanted a good, Canadiansounding name, and asking the opinion of the high school students who stopped in the Steak and Burger, settled on The

House of Lancaster. It wasn’t easy, says Spiro, for two Greek brothers to make a go of it in 1960s Toronto. As Spiro tells it, the story of how they obtained their liquor license is an epic worthy of Homer, and they found themselves at a disadvantage when another entrepreneur opened up next door to them offering half-price food and booze. "My brother took and put life insurance so if we go broke he’ll kill himself, so me and my sister not be broke," says Spiro.

"An honourable man. Not too many people would be like this. A good Spartan!" Things turned around, after Terry, returning from a failed attempt to enter Alaska, visited a nightclub in Montreal. "He went to the French section, he walked into a bar to go get a drink. Somehow, the music starts, he turns around, and he sees five naked girls! Dancing!" says Spiro. l See CLUB page 23

It was a revelation, and Terry ran with it. Spiro says that his brother met with people in Miami, and then Montreal. "He found some guy there who said, you go see so-and-so, I’ll get you so many girls." Cal Powell was working in Toronto as a lawyer for the province at the time, and early on did work on behalf of the House of Lancaster. Retired now, Powell says that "certainly," the House of Lancaster was the first fully nude strip club in Toronto when it opened in 1969. And when that happened, "his business went off the dial." As Spiro tells it, people were lined up around the block to get into the House of Lancaster. Toronto the Good as it was known then had seen nothing like it, and when the building they were in was acquired by CN, the staid and conservative railway men wanted to see the end of the Lancaster. That was the first of many very public fights that the Spartan brothers took on. When CN attempted their eviction, Terry embarked on a very public hunger strike. "I’ll never eat again!’ he said," recalls Powell. "’Starve me out, railway!’ Then of course he called me up and asked if I could bring him some food." Eventually, the House of Lancaster shut its doors downtown. The brothers returned to Greece for a time - and when they returned, it was not to downtown Toronto, but The Queensway in Etobicoke, in the old Hollywood Tavern. It was 1982. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms had just come into effect. Strip clubs were opening across the city. And the Spartans Spiro and Terry had new battles to fight.

Dan Pearce/Metroland

Above patrons at the House of Lancaster take in one of Zoey’s final sets before the strip club closes its doors for good. Right, owner Spiro Koumoudouros tdisplays a plaque of bikini-sporting women competing in Miss Nude House of Lancaster 1983. The club was the first strip joint in Toronto to permit fully nude dancers. threatened to open up "a national gay community centre," then sent angry callers to the Civic Centre, and that was that. Another fight proved far more costly. Spiro estimates that the family has spent "$10 million" on lawyers, fighting for dancers’ rights to bare all in then-Metropolitan Toronto. In particular, the brothers fought the old Metropolitan Toronto to strike down a bylaw that required dancers in Metro to wear a G-string, while no such law existed in 905-area municipalities. They and other club owners took the matter to the Supreme Court of Canada, and won. But Metropolitan Toronto wasn’t finished with them. Metro’s licensing regime required that dancers be licensed, charging $400 and requiring a police background check. The municipality also moved to outlaw lapdancing, in a crusade led by thenMetro-Councillor Jack Layton. Spiro calls it "the crisis of the lap dance," and insists that the crisis was invented: that there was no problems in allowing dancers to touch patrons, and vice-versa. And the licensing regime, still in effect, means that women who

apply for the license are at risk as being identified as dancers when applying for jobs or attempting to travel to the United States, according to Spiro. That licensing regime, says Spiro, also ensures that the clubs can no longer bring in entertainers from other countries or provinces. So no more Miss Nude Universe or Miss Nude World, which for many years were a mainstay at the Lancaster. The result, he claims, is that fewer and fewer young women decide to become dancers, and that they are driven instead to the ruband-tug massage parlours that have sprouted in Toronto. "They are in the hands of pimps and dope dealers," says Spiro. "In this place, there’s no pimps, no dope dealers, no drugs, no nothing. We supervise every department. But this time, they find a way to destroy the club."

Spiro Koumoudouros’ contention is up for debate. Powell says his sense is that the sex workers in body rub parlours are not recruited from women from the Lancaster and other strip clubs. Local Councillor Justin Di Ciano says that the body-rub parlours where sexual services are offered along

The Queensway are more likely to draw men who’ve spent an afternoon watching a show at the Lancaster than they are dancers. However, Powell agrees with Spiro’s insistence that the Lancaster was a good place to dance. "From my knowledge, and what I saw, which was a lot, they were treated very well," said Powell. "What they were paid was set by the Montreal group... and then they made over and above on tips. And the important thing with that, was the degree of nakedness. The tips went up when the p**sies

were out, as the President of the United States might say." For better or worse, dancers bringing in premium tips in Toronto on that basis have Spiro and Terry to thank, and their lifelong fight. It’s a fight that Spiro says killed his brother, and one that he’s content to step back from. "My doctors say they have an expression: a cat, he has nine lives. You must have twelve lives. Me, I’m not an easy guy to die. I’m working 12 hours a day. Seven days a week. That is willpower. "I’m a Spartan."

One was easy. Etobicoke Mayor Dennis Flynn and his council were not pleased when the House of Lancaster reopened on The Queensway, and set about to shut it down. Spiro and Terry got word of this late in the game so they sprang into action. Spiro recalls that he hired 500 people to show up at City Hall to help sway the vote, and when it became clear that the city wasn’t going to be swayed, they issued a press release that was too much for early-80s Etobians.
