Ontario nursing homes are drugging seniors with antipsychotic drugs at an alarming rate, despite warnings the drugs could kill elderly people with dementia, according to an Etobicoke MPP and a media investigation.

The Toronto Star this week revealed some long-term care homes struggling with staffing shortages dole out the drugs to calm or “restrain” wandering, agitated or aggressive residents.

At more than 40 homes across the province, roughly half the residents are on the drugs. At close to 300 homes, more than a third of the residents are on the drugs.

Liberal Etobicoke Centre MPP Donna Cansfield has called on her government to review the off-label use of antipsychotic drugs among Ontario long-term care residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia and to make changes.

When little Tyler Bonar packed up his fishing rod to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon with his dad at Centennial Park pond last weekend, he was hoping to see the fish jumping.

Instead, the five-year-old fishing enthusiast found many of the fish limp and bloated, washed up dead and floating along the man-made pond’s shoreline.

“We walked down there and as soon as we got to the shore, we looked down and went ‘oh geez’ – there was about a five-pound carp sitting there on the shoreline dead,” said John Bonar, Tyler’s dad. “Then we looked around the shoreline and there were maybe six or seven more dead fish – and that was just in the one spot.”

The further Tyler and his dad ventured around the pond, the more dead fish they stumbled upon, and it wasn’t just carp – it was crappie and bass, too, he said.

And the Bonars weren’t the only ones to notice.

“Lots of people were walking along the shoreline doing the same thing, looking concerned and asking me what happened to the fish,” Bonar said.

Worried that the die-off might have been caused by some kind of fertilizer run-off from the adjacent golf course or a case of illegal chemical dumping at the pond, Bonar reached out to The Guardian – and The Guardian, in turn, sought answers from the city’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation department and the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR).

Both assured that the fish die-off at Centennial Park – as well as similar instances reported this spring at High Park’s Grenadier Pond and the Rennie Park pond – can most likely be attributed to a naturally occurring phenomenon called “winter kill.”

“Winter fish kill happens most often in shallow weedy lakes and ponds,” explained Wil Wegman, a resource management technician with the MNR’s Aurora District.

cover blocks the transfer of oxygen from the air into the water.”

As the aquatic plants in small lakes and ponds die off due to the cold temperatures and low light levels under the ice, bacteria decomposes the dead organic material, which uses up the oxygen in the water, Wegman continued.

“As the oxygen is depleted, fish begin to suffocate and die. The severe winter we had will likely heighten the winter fish kill this year,” he added.

“Longer than normal ice cover on lakes and especially small ponds, like that at Centennial Park, could mean more dead fish being visible this spring.”

While Wegman said winter kill is a natural event that does not normally affect the health of fish populations,

severe occurrences can significantly reduce such populations within small ponds.

Clean up of dead fish, Wegman added, is the responsibility of the landowner – whether that be the city, the province, a business or a private individual. Anyone undertaking such a cleanup is advised to: wear gloves; either bury or double-bag the dead fish for garbage pickup; and to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water afterwards.

Back at Centennial Park pond on a snowy day this week, Bonar and his two young fishing enthusiast sons were relieved to hear the news that the fish at their favorite fishing hole had died of natural causes.

ow to pay for transit expansion – it’s the multi-billion-dollar question.

Speaking at the Toronto Region Board of Trade Monday, Premier Kathleen Wynne pledged that a greater portion of the gas tax (one that’s already collected by the province) would go toward specific transit projects.

Combined with other funds, that reallocation commitment amounts to $29 billion over 10 years.

There aren’t many details beyond that a little more than half that money would go to projects in the Greater Toronto Area.

Response to Wynne’s pledge from the likes of Metrolinx Chair Robert Prichard and representatives from CivicAction Alliance was optimistic, but cautious – and for good reason.

Specific details haven’t been announced, for one.

We also know that all the Big Move projects in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area need $2 billion annually over 25 years. our view Monday’s funding commitment amounts to less than a Pledge greeted third of that target.

Finally, Wynne’s minority with optimism government is on shaky ground and is hardly in prime position and caution to act on this pledge.

Her governing Liberals will need support from either the Progressive Conservatives or the NDP to survive an upcoming budget vote at Queen’s Park and avoid being plunged into a June election.

Simply put, she has the best platform right now to make those kind of big pledges.

Somewhere along the line – maybe soon, maybe later – the voter will decide.

So the premier has sent a message clear in financial support if nothing else. The big number will resonate.

The Tories’ focus on building subways may resonate with voters. The NDP hasn’t set out exactly what they’d do for transit and how they’d pay for it.

And it’s the NDP that matters most here.

Presuming there’s a provincial budget soon, it’ll come down to whether the NDP supports that budget that determines how much cautiously optimistic transit planners can count on the Liberalpromised provincial funds.

Turning down the budget sends us to an election and all bets are off.

Pre-election transit promises are sweet, but prospects remain bleak

I

n the politics of commuting in Toronto, there is nothing quite as heartbreaking as a transit plan near the eve of an election.

The promise is as sweet as the prospects are bleak.

But the stakes are high enough that you cannot look away.

Mayor Rob Ford played with the hearts of Scarborough residents when he promised to stop the Sheppard LRT and turn it into a subway just a few years ago. And a few more years prior to that, Ontario premier Bob Rae and his successor Mike Harris broke the hearts of City of York residents, when Rae actually funded and then Harris cancelled a subway along Eglinton Avenue.

Construction was already underway by the time that happened, proving that even a sure thing can become dubious in

Now Ontario’s Premier Kathleen Wynne has stepped up, making what sounds like a dubious promise from the get-go: $15 billion flowing to transit and transportation improvements in the Greater Toronto Area (from $29 billion, provincewide), from... somewhere. gas tax revenue Gas tax revenue will have something to do with it, as will a portion of the HST derived from fuel tax.

And there will be added debt.

Further details of how this money is to be raised will be revealed in the sure-to-be-defeated 2014

provincial budget coming a few weeks from now.

The money, if it ever comes, would sure be nice.

More than nice, in fact: funding on that scale is essential if Toronto and the region is to remain livable and economically viable.

It might even be worth a bigger deficit to see it go ahead.

There is a more immediate and less costly plan at work with the April 14 announcement: embarrassing the provincial Progressive Conservatives and New Democrats as they get set to presumably defeat the government and force a spring election.

Wynne seeks allies Wynne made that clear at the announcement, when she pointed out that the plan will require allies – and if those allies aren’t in the Legislature, they

could well be voters.

If Wynne can successfully portray a vote against the government as a vote against transit funding, then she’ll have a shot at the ear of every commuter struggling for breath and dignity on the YongeUniversity subway line.

It won’t hurt her a bit that the mayor’s race in Toronto is also shaping itself into a marathon meditation on public transit.

Unfortunately for Wynne and for Toronto, the Ontario Liberals are entering this race with many other well-documented disadvantages. If transit expansion is truly to be tied to a Liberal victory in 2014... well, that would be yet another heart-break.

Home tells the story and tragic ending of Col. Sam Smith’s family O

ver the years, we’ve seen the loss of many heritage buildings, and while each is a tragedy, many feel that the loss of the house in this photo is the most lamentable we’ve seen in Etobicoke. At the time of its 1955 demolition to build a supermarket parking lot, it was the second oldest house in Toronto, built in 1797. Yes, it was a plain and simple house, in need of some TLC, but with lots of history to tell. It was located in what today is the schoolyard behind St. Josaphat Catholic School on 41st Street in Long Branch.

The home’s original owner was Lt. Col. Samuel Smith, who had served in the Queen’s Rangers under John Graves Simcoe. Smith became a civilian in 1798 and the next year at the age of 45, he married Jane Isabella Clark and had 11 children together.

In 1815, he was appointed to Upper Canada’s Executive Council, and then served as

Smith was granted 3000 acres of land for his military service, including 2,600 acres in Etobicoke from Kipling Avenue to Etobicoke Creek, and from Bloor Street to Lake Ontario. Smith’s house was initially a four room log cabin built of pine timber, dovetailed at the corners and secured with hickory pegs. Its floor was made of pine boards cut two-inches thick and 14-inches wide.

He soon added two rooms to each end of the cabin and covered the exterior with siding.

Smith built a saw mill on Etobicoke Creek and bred horses, but does not appear to have had any skill at farming. He possessed a surfeit of social status and land, but his income as a half-pay officer was too low to develop his vast estate. Smith died

in October 1826, and his wife died one month later.

Their destitute children petitioned and received a monetary grant from the government. The family left most of the Etobicoke land unused well into 19th century. The house was taken over by squatters and quickly deteriorated.

In 1861, James and Margaret Eastwood purchased the old house and 500 acres of lakefront property, which they farmed.

In 1883, they sold 50 acres to a consortium which developed it into a successful summer resort area called Long Branch Park.

In 1920, Eastwood sold the rest of his land for more cottage developments, retaining six acres around the house. Its last resident was the Eastwoods’ greatgreat-grandson, Robert Christopherson, who had been born in the house in 1880.

munities. We have good social media and organizational skills, and we all work really well together.”

Last year, Khan and the other youth members of the Muslim Consultative Committee launched the Tri-Sport Competition after being inspired by a basketball tournament hosted by the police’s South Asian Consultative Committee.

The inaugural event, which tool place last St. Patrick’s Day at Harbourfront Community Centre, drew about 40 youth competitors – four boys’ and two girls’ teams – to face off against police and auxiliary officers from 14 Division and

the Divisional Police Support Unit.

This year, Khan said they hope to increase those numbers to about 50 youth – all of whom will receive a free team T-shirt, sponsored by Uniglobe.

“The Tri-Sport Competition is just a really fun event. We don’t have any strictly defined goals for this event – I think it’s just a way to help bring members of the police service together with Muslim youth in this city so they have a good time,” he said.

“The hope is, of course, that this will keep improving relations between the two communities.”

Registration for this year’s Tri-Sport Competition is currently open to boys and girls aged 12 to 22.

Males and females will play separately on teams of seven.

Anyone interested in participating is asked to register their team by May 10 (each team must have at least two members under the age of 18).

Health Canada does not approve the use of olanzapine, quetiapine and at least 10 other antipsychotic drugs, for elderly people with dementia.

In fact, pharmaceutical companies have issued the strongest-possible warnings about the use of antipsychotics on their labelling.

It is known as a black-box warning.

“Elderly patients with dementia treated with atypical antipsychotic drugs are at an increased risk of death compared to placebo,” the warning says, adding that these patients face a 60 per cent increased risk of death compared with similar patients who are not taking these drugs.

The head of the organization that represents most Ontario nursing homes also acknowledged the problem: “We know we need to do better. Seniors deserve better,” said Candace Chartier, CEO of Ontario’s Long-Term Care Association.

The province tracks the number of residents on these pills home by home, but much of this information has not been publicly reported, the health ministry said.

While some residents in Ontario long-term care homes may suffer from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or another condition that antipsychotics are approved to treat, most – 63 per cent – suffer from dementia.

Art Group marks milestone w50-year

The Etobicoke Art Group marks 50 years of its first Annual Juried Exhibition.

The group was founded in 1951 as a project by the Art Gallery of Ontario to establish an art hub in the city’s west end. It was in 1964 that the group held its first exhibition.

Artwork created by members of the Etobiocke Art Group will be on display at the Etobicoke Civic Centre Art Gallery, 399 The West Mall from April 30 to May 22

Origami cranes launch Meagan’s Walk JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Students from schools from across the Greater Toronto Area dropped by the Hospital for Sick Children, presenting thousands of origami cranes to brain tumour survivors.

The day marked the continuation of a yearly trend at the hospital, with the crane ceremony serving as launch of Meagan’s Walk, which raises funds and awareness for pediatric brain tumour research. It was named after Meagan Bebenek, who died in 2001 after her own battle with a brain tumour.

The idea of the crane ceremony originated at Our Lady of Sorrows School in Etobicoke, which Meagan attended, by fellow student Margaret Wiley. She began making the cranes – symbols of hope in Chinese culture – as a means of wishing Meagan a speedy recovery.

“I started doing things on my own after hearing about Meagan and I realized people were as frustrated as

I was by not being able to do anything,” Wiley said at the Tuesday launch. “I talked to my teacher in my Grade 8 class and the teacher said to talk to the principal to see about getting the school involved.”

Getting involved The school quickly jumped on board, with students of all ages – from Meagan’s kindergarten class to Wiley’s Grade 8 class – making cranes.

“We stopped counting at around 2,500,” Wiley said.

“People kept bringing them in and other people kept putting them all over the school so it was impossible to keep track.”

Meagan’s mother, Denise Bebenek, said the support of Meagan’s schoolmates helped bring about the entire Meagan’s Walk concept, which has now brought in more than $3.1 million.

“In my heart, I truly believe this first crane ceremony (at Our Lady of Sorrows) was where the seed was planted

for (the Meagan’s Walk) campaign,” she said.

Bebenek noted that some 58 schools have signed up for Meagan’s Walk Spirit Days, in which they show support for the cause.

She said she is proud Meagan’s legacy continues to make a difference in the lives of others.

“Sadly, there is a Meagan in every school,” she said. “We’re here to collectively change the course of history for children with brain tumours and other forms of cancer.”

SickKids pediatric neurooncologist Dr. Ute Bartels said that while she never met Meagan, she and her colleagues have gotten to know her story and have rallied around the cause in hopes of finding a cure for pediatric brain tumours.

“Brain tumours in children are, fortunately, quite rare but when they happen, it’s quite a significant disease,” she said.

LAMP accepting nominations for its Awards of Merit Do you know someone making a difference in Etobicoke’s Lakeshore community? If so, LAMP Community Health Centre wants to hear from you.

LAMP’s 15th annual Awards of Merit on June 3 will recognize those leaders in the community who are helping to build: safe and affordable housing; strong families and good neighbours; a clean environment; healthy and affordable food; education and social service supports;

parks, recreation and leisure opportunities; arts and culture outlets; and to preserve history.

Nominees are being accepted.

Potential recipients may include local volunteers, community leaders, students, teachers, health-care providers, neighbours, coaches, historical preservationists, diversity service groups, community groups, businesses, artists, musicians, social service agencies, long-term care providers, or anyone in between.

LAMP is also currently accepting nominations for the recently launched Jean Augustine Legacy Award.

“With this award, we’re looking for individuals who, like Jean, have overcome barriers to live the values of social justice, who champion positive social change, who have integrity and compassion, and who really want to make a difference,” LAMP’s community relations officer Jasmin Dooh said in February, when

the award was first launched.

A decade ago, Long Branch residents and partners David Pritchard and Madeleine Pengelley saw potential in the area and opened Birds and Beans Cafe adjacent to Amos Waites Park in Mimico.

Birds and Beans sells certified organic, shade-grown, fairly traded and bird-friendly coffees supporting coffee farmers and preserving habitats in coffee-growing regions in south and central America.

The couple operates their 3,000-square-foot Birds and Beans Roastery in nearby Alderwood.

“We were the first to really offer the specialty coffee experience in the lakeshore,” Pritchard said.

“The big guys (Starbucks) don’t normally come in until the market has been established. People like brands.

They like to see their neighbourhood as successful. But we really haven’t seen any impact from Starbucks on our business.”

Pritchard said Birds and

Beans’ competitors don’t offer their niche: 100 per cent certified organic, bird-friendly with a local roastery.

“Our customers are our customers. They sell coffee.

But they don’t do what we do.

If people want to support a local company, they’ll come to us,” he said.

Pritchard is once again chair of the Mimico-By-TheLake Business Improvement Area after stepping down as chair to take on the vice-chair role for many years.

“It’s great,” Pritchard said of the state of coffee in the lakeshore.

“Finally, some other people are seeing the potential we saw 10 years ago. There is much better coffee in the Lakeshore than there was a decade ago. There is much more choice.

“The interesting thing about the coffee business is it’s really, really big. It’s also really, really competitive.”

Cycling improvement projects in Toronto and across the province will receive a boost of $25 million over three years.

The announcement, made by provincial Transportation Minister Glen Murray to kick off the 2014 Ontario Bike Summit, will see $10 million invested in municipal bike infrastructure projects like separated lanes. Province to dedicate more gas tax money towards transit Premier Wynne pledges $15 billion for GTA transit upgrades over next decade RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The Ontario government has pledged $15 billion to Greater Toronto transportation improvements over the next 10 years.

The announcement Monday by Premier Kathleen Wynne promises $29 billion in overall funding provincewide, with the bulk of the money coming from redirected HST revenues collected from provincial gas taxes as well as the introduction of a new set of revenue tools, the details of which will not be known until the release of the provincial budget in a few weeks’ time.

Wynne also promised full

accountability and transparency when it comes to allocating the money. But given the precarious status of the minority Liberals, she admitted for the plan to ever become reality it will require support from either the provincial PCs or NDPs, or a clear victory at the polls should an election be called as early as late spring.

“We need a partner to put our plan in place,” said Wynne to reporters following the noon-hour announcement at the Royal York Hotel as part an event organized by the Toronto Region Board of Trade.

“That partner could be the Tories, the NDP or, if necessary, the voting public.”

lected revenue would be funneled across a decade into Metrolinx priority projects such as the introduction of frequent GO Transit rail service beyond the Lakeshore lines and the Downtown Relief Line plan to alleviate current subway congestion in Toronto.

While the funding breakdown likely amounts to $1.5 billion annually in new infrastructure funding for the Greater Toronto Area, both Wynne and Ontario Transportation Minister Glen Murray, who was also present at the announcement, were coy about the yearly funding breakdown, nor did they specify how much of the money will be dedicated to public transit and how much for road and highway improvements, saying only those details would be revealed with the release of the provincial budget.

Wynne would also not comment how her government – which is expected to carry an $11.7 billion fiscal deficit over 2014 – would be able to reallocate the gas tax revenue from other provincial programs and services, promising only that the forthcoming budget would answer such questions.

Metrolinx’s request of $2 billion in new transit funding annually to pay for its Big Move expansion plan, Metrolinx Chair Rob Prichard said Wynne’s announcement represented a positive first step for future funding either from the province or the federal government.

“This is a floor, not a ceiling of the funds available, and they can easily be supplemented by significant federal investment,” Pritchard.

Board of Trade President Carol Wilding said she was pleased, calling the announcement a “milestone moment” for transportation funding. But she reserved comment until all details of the plan are known.

“There’s a lot of details to come in the budget, so like everyone else we’re going to have to wait,” Wilding said.

Toronto Central CCAC celebrates 50 years of compassionate home care Launch of Heroes in the Home Caregiver Recognition Awards To mark the 50th anniversary of delivering home care in Toronto, Toronto Central CCAC has launched the Heroes in the Home Caregiver Recognition Awards.

The awards will honour both paid and unpaid caregivers in the Toronto Central community — the unsung heroes who give of themselves to help others live with comfort, dignity and independence.

The awards will recognize all types of caregivers, whether a family member, neighbour, friend or health care worker who selflessly provide skilled and compassionate care. The awards will be presented on May 27, 2014. Nominations can be made until April 25. Toronto Central CCAC also launched a Facebook page -- www.facebook.com/torontocentralCCAC -- to promote the awards and share stories of dedicated caregivers.

American talk show host Jimmy Kimmel Skyped into Ford Nation Monday morning, trading banter with Rob and Doug Ford in a fiveminute interview.

The interview was originally intended to go live on the Ford brothers’ YouTube show Friday morning, but was postponed owing to the sudden death of former federal finance minister and Ford family friend Jim Flaherty the previous day.

The five-minute interview followed Ford’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live March 3, where the show devoted nearly 30 minutes to discussing Ford’s various scandals, and starting with Ford’s choice of wardrobe that night, a black suit and shirt with a red tie, that Kimmel likened to a magician’s costume.

For the Ford Nation interview, Kimmel chose the same ensemble. The interview ranged from a plug for Rob Ford’s bobble-head dolls to

election plans, and the suggestion Kimmel should come to Toronto to campaign for Ford in the 2014 election.

“You know the future of Jimmy Kimmel Live relies on Rob Ford getting re-elected,” Doug said. “So my question is when are you going to get your backside up here to save your job and start door knocking to make sure this guy keeps you going every single night?”

Kimmel came back: “You know what I was thinking would be good? I wanted not even a fundraiser, I want to throw a fun raiser – where we just have fun in classic Rob Ford style. What do you think of that?”

Doug asked about Kimmel’s premier episode, in which he served alcohol to his audience and one member had to be removed after having vomited.

“You know you’re starting to sound like a politician when you say I don’t know what happened that night,” said Doug.

“No,” Kimmel said, “I’m

just saying I was so drunk I don’t know what happened that night.”

Rob Ford, laughing, cut in: “I used that excuse one too many times myself.”

Rob Ford then noted that Kimmel’s birthday was in November, the same month as Doug’s 50th birthday, and suggested that Kimmel come up and celebrate.

“There’s no two people I would rather spend my birthday with than the two of you – and Doug, yeah, your 50th birthday, I would love to be the party clown,” Kimmel said.

When Doug suggested that Kimmel would have to stay with Rob and not him, Kimmel answered: “I’m not just sleeping at Rob’s place – Rob, I want to sleep with you and your wife.”

Rob didn’t respond other than to laugh and blush n o t i c e a b l y, a n d D o u g answered: “Oh we better not comment on that one.”

When the other suspects demanded property from the other victims, a struggle ensued and the suspects fled the scene in a four-door Honda Civic.

One of the victims sustained minor injuries, but the others were unhurt.

The suspects are described as follows: the first is about 6’0” tall; the second is black, aged 19 to 22, 6’0”, with a thin build; the third is 5’11, with a thin build.

Man mugged Sunday by two men, one with knife A 48-year-old man was mugged at knifepoint near Newscastle Street and Royal York Road Sunday, April 13.

According to police, the victim was in the area at around 3 : 1 0 p. m . when two male suspects approached him.

One of the suspects pulled a knife on the victim and stole his cash, then both suspects fled the scene. The victim was not hurt.

The first suspect was described as white; the second as black. No further suspect descriptions were available.

Patriots in championship series The Etobicoke-based Toronto Lakeshore Patriots took a 2-1 series lead into its Ontario Junior A Hockey League best-of-seven series against the Aurora Tigers last night ( Wednesday, April 16) at Etobicoke’s Westwood Arena.

Mimico’s Brendan Shanahan named new Leafs president CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Mimico born-and-bred hockey hero Brendan Shanahan officially took over the reins of the Toronto Maple Leafs this week as the struggling hockey club’s new president.

At a press conference at the Air Canada Centre announcing his appointment on Monday morning – just two days after the Leafs’ shutout loss in Ottawa marked the end of the eighth season the Leafs have failed to make the playoffs in the last nine years – Shanahan, 45, said he expects his new role will be a humbling one, but that he’s ready to get to work.

Word of Shanahan’s homecoming was welcome news to Maple Leafs fans in Mimico – with none more delighted at the hometown hero’s return than Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes, a longtime Shanahan family friend and proud Toronto Maple Leafs fan.

“I’m a season ticket holder myself, so I was very disappointed (the Leafs didn’t make the playoffs), but, you know, it’s a game – and I think we just got some very good news on the back of some very bad news,” Grimes said shortly after MLSE announced Shanahan’s appointment on Friday, April 11. “I think long-term, getting a guy like Shanahan to come in can only help this team.”

Described by Grimes as a “proven winner” and “no-nonsense” type of guy, Shanahan has a long history of hockey excellence – from his minor hockey days playing for the

Etobicoke Canadiens to his storied, 21-year NHL career, during which he helped lead his Detroit Red Wings to three Stanley Cup championship wins. Shanahan also won gold medals with Team Canada at the 1994 World Championships, the 2002 Winter Olympics and the 1991 Canada Cup. While Shanahan said he wouldn’t yet comment on specifics of the team’s future at Monday’s press conference, he said he’s looking forward to learning about the Leafs organization “from the top to the bottom”.

“Now is a time for me to listen, to learn and to get to work,” he said.

“Nothing we say here today matters. It’s about the work we put in and it’s about the results. That’s really what it’s about – we need results here.”

West Mall reunion hits the ice in OHL semifinal series It will be another reunion of sorts for a handful of Ontario Hockey League (OHL) stars who all got their start in hockey more than a decade ago with Etobicoke’s West Mall Lightning: but there probably won’t be a lot of pleasantries exchanged this time around.

That’s because the four are facing each other in an OHL semifinal series – Connor Brown and Adam Pelech with the Erie Otters; and Scott Kosmachuk and Matt Finn with the Guelph Storm.

The series opens Thursday in Guelph.

Another player from the West Mall team, Scott Laughton, is in the other OHL semifinal series with his Oshawa Generals taking on the North Bay Battalion.

and then all through their high level youth rep careers with the Toronto Marlboros (where Brown still coaches).

Asked whether it might have been the proverbial something in the water in Etobicoke and coach Brown quipped, in a recent interview: “I think it was the hot dogs in the concession at West Mall.”

“They really pushed each other. They were such a talented group even at a young age and when they can compete against each other day in, day out they really are able to learn at another level so I think they really did it for each other without even knowing it, just, you know having fun, thinking they’re

just playing a game.

“Little did they know they were really honing some future professional skills.”

During the regular season Brown and Kosmachuk were first and third, overall, in OHL scoring. In fact Brown was the top scorer in the country in major junior hockey. And Finn and Pelech were second and tied-for-third, respectively, among defencemen in the OHL. While Laughton was 16th in scoring he impressed rival coaches as he had the distinction of the most mentions of any players in the league’s annual coaches’ poll.

Three of the above mentioned players are actually Etobicoke residents – Brown and Finn are former students at Etobicoke’s Michael Power/ St Joseph Catholic Secondary and Pelech at Bishop Allen Academy.

And they are by no means the only Etobicoke representation in the OHL, with other prominent players

“I was coaching the (West Mall) tyke house league and select teams. Terry joined us at seven years old and, again, he followed us through West Mall and into the Marlies,” said coach Brown, adding that as a peewee Trafford did

move over to the Toronto Red Wing organization.

The kids hung out a lot in those years, he said, adding that “we’ve seen Terry and Roy and Bev – his mom and dad – over the years around the hockey rinks.”
