Olympian Jason Burnett falters in trampoline finals Alderwood resident finishes in eighth place in London “Go big or go home!” That motto – which paid off big time for silver medal-winning Etobicoke trampolinist Jason Burnett at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 – proved to be the 25-year-old’s undoing at this year’s Games in London. After qualifying for the finals in sixth place last Friday by nailing some of the highest degree of difficulty tricks in his preliminary routines, Burnett chose to up the stakes even more in the finals. But just seconds into his last routine, the pride of Alderwood faltered, landing just a little too close to the edge of the trampoline, losing his footing and prematurely ending his Olympic dreams of gold. He ended up finishing in eighth place. Burnett began trending on Twitter shortly before he qualified for Friday’s finals with a score of 109.065. He took to the social media site himself following his fumble to let supporters know how he was faring. “I have lived through a spectrum of experience, from top to bottom, and I think that is something to celebrate,” he tweeted Friday, shortly before drowning his sorrows over a few drinks with his mom, dad, brother and uncle. “If I can’t go home with a medal, I can at least go home with a lesson.” Burnett’s followers, in turn, responded with messages of support. “Poor Jason Burnett, that was difficult to watch. Still, great job and congrats on getting to the final! #GoCanadaGo #GiveYourEverything,” tweeted Jackman Chiu. Wrote @tracyescape: “Hugs to our Canadian trampolinist Jason Burnett were very proud of u. u did not let anyone including yrself down.” If his history is any indication, Burnett won’t stay down for long. He recovered from a badly broken leg suffered in July 2010 in order to compete – and beat – some of the world’s best trampolinists at this year’s Games. – Cynthia Reason

A 10-day festival will lead up to the championship game kick-off Nov. 25. Celebrations in the city include street parties, player awards, team parties, a football film festival and a family fun zone. The Grey Cup has a lively history. The first Grey Cup was played on Toronto’s Rosedale Field in 1909. The original festival got its start in 1948 after victorious Calgary Stampeder fans partied through the streets of Toronto, even riding a horse through the Royal York Hotel, after their team defeated Ottawa Rough Riders 12-7 at Varsity Stadium. Richview student hits podium in track and field Richview Collegiate student Jordan Bates was obviously ready to take her act to the next stage as she hit the podium in her first trip to the national junior track and field championships, which wrapped up in Winnipeg recently. The Etobicoke Track and Field Club member brought back a bronze medal in the women’s triple jump (11.82 metres) and finished just out of the medals in fourth place in women’s long jump (5.45m).

Interestingly, that’s the exact same result she produced this past spring competing for the first time at the senior level at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) provincial track and field championships – third in triple jump and fourth in long jump. The previous year (2011), at the junior level, she won provincial OFSAA gold in triple jump and silver in long jump.

And while it’s not the North American version of the game favoured by Rob Ford, Toronto’s mayor has thrown his weight behind the Festival of Football, to help raise funds for the West Park Healthcare Centre Foundation. Ford challenged fellow councillors to bring out a soccer team for the tournament, which is open to all residents who want to kick around a

ball and raise cash for the rehabilitation hospital. Ford and local councillor Frances Nunziata helped launch the event for the facility, which is recognized as a centre of excellence in rehabilitation. The centre offers specialized rehab for everything from sporting injuries to helping amputees regain mobility. Protect yourself against West Nile

To the editor: Re: ‘Canadarm should come to Toronto, Ottawa,’ Letters, Aug. 3 I, too, believe the Canadarm should go to one of Canada’s great air and space museums. My preference is the Canadian Air and Space Museum at Downsview Park. Had the management of Downsview Park demonstrated wisdom and intelligence, Canadarm may well have been assigned to the Canadian Air and Space Museum at the park. However, that possibility ended when the Downsview management shortsightedly and mistakenly decided to close down this year-round cultural asset in the park – the Canadian Air and Space Museum. ews from Toronto Public Health that two people in the city have tested positive for probable West Nile virus should serve as a warning for all residents. Now is the time to stop and think about protective measures regarding the disease that is spread by infected mosquitoes. There’s no need for panic; just remember some simple steps we can all take to limit both our personal risk of exposure and that of our neighbours. The best way to protect yourself is to limit exposure. Be especially aware at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active. Use mosquito repellent, cover up with long sleeves and pants, and wear light coloured clothes in areas where there are mosour view quitoes. Residents can also Take precautions protect their home’s indoors by making sure all holes in to limit exposure window and door screens have been repaired. Also, Toronto Public Health to virus reminds residents that checking properties and limiting areas that mosquitoes can use as breeding grounds helps keep the numbers down. In particular, residents are asked to remove standing water from their properties, especially water that has gathered in plant pots, buckets and other items. On a larger scale, the city is also doing its part by having larvicide put into catch basins in order to help reduce the mosquito population. This year’s hot spring and summer have raised the risk level of West Nile virus in Toronto, and the city’s public health department said the two probable diagnoses last week mark the earliest appearance of the virus in humans since it first arrived in Toronto in 2002. An 80-year-old man, who has been hospitalized, and a 32-year-old woman recovering at home have been found with the probable diagnosis. Public health did not say what part of the city they are from. West Nile virus is a potentially deadly disease originally carried by birds who passed it on to mosquitoes after being bitten. People exposed to the virus can show a number of symptoms including fever, rash, neck pain, confusion, severe headaches and sensitivity to light. In serious cases, it can cause inflammation of the brain. However, the risk of infection is still considered low, according to Toronto Public Health, with less than one per cent of people becoming seriously ill and 80 per cent of people bitten by an infected mosquito do not become ill at all. That should not lead to complacency, though. Working together, we can all limit our exposure to this virus.

Mayor Ford playing role of big-city mayor

ayor Rob Ford finished off July with what can only be described as a series of bravura performances. It really started mid-July, as the mayor danced on the stage with ebullient young women at the launch of the latest iteration of Caribana. Later in the month, he traded quips with Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, as the two movie stars descended upon the Hockey Hall of Fame to promote their new movie. Later that same week, he risked life, limb and dignity ascending a set of monkey bars in the new Underpass Park, bouncing up and down while delighted neighbourhood children chanted “Go Mayor, Go Mayor.” It was goofy. It could have gone all to pieces. The mayor could have fallen and really hurt himself; he could have ripped his trousers; he could, in the style of London Mayor Boris Johnson, have simply gotten stuck. But you know what? If it had all gone to pieces, the mayor would have left

Torontonians with a really joyful reminder of just what it is we expect from a mayor in this town: that being, someone who isn’t afraid to get down in the dirt and be seen having a good time with his constituents. Mel Lastman, Toronto’s first mayor, was all about the goofball moments. His office both at Toronto City Hall and when he was Mayor of North York, at the civic centre, was filled with five-and-dime novelties and practical jokes that he’d pull out to amuse — and sometimes bemuse — visitors. Lastman had his bad moments, certainly — but his good moments were just a joy. For Mayor Ford, there have been too few joyful moments — at least publicly. When things have gotten goofy, Ford has more

often played an uncomfortable straight man who responded with anger and fear rather than good humor to the surprises life in the city tossed his way. There is, of course, no time like the summer to start doing this sort of thing. Ford has had some setbacks legislatively — Toronto Council has for the moment seized the agenda from him in the middle of his term. But council is in recess — there are no meetings until the fall — and there is no one to stop the mayor from actually going out and engaging with his citizenry, in a context beyond dealing with oneon-one grievances. The mayor has focussed on grievance; arguably, it was a sense of grievance with city government that got Ford elected in the first place. And Ford has made no secret of his belief that the biggest problem with his city is the city. In expressing that belief, Ford has made a point of snubbing key sectors of the city: the arts community, the LGBT community, even

the people developing the waterfront; when the Waterfront Park celebrated its groundbreaking earlier in the term, Ford was nowhere to be found. It’s good to see him rethinking his absent-father approach to leadership in this town now. Distracted driving campaign kicks off in the city RAHUL GUPTA press@insidetoronto.com Kevin Sack has a message for motorists who feel they need to constantly text or make calls while on the road: use transit instead. “That’s a good idea,” said Sack, a vice president of communications for 407 ETR, which owns and operates the 407 toll highway. “I don’t think anyone has something so important they have to take their own life, or the life of others, just because they have to communicate.” Sack, who was once a spokesperson for the City of Toronto, was part of a group of helmeted volunteers recently demonstrating the dangers of distracted driving, some of them texting from a phone while attempting to maneuver an electric go-kart along a racetrack at Grand Prix Kartways, located inside Downsview Park. “You can’t concentrate on both texting and driving, you just can’t,” he said afterward. “Maybe if you’re stationary or at your computer, but not operating a vehicle.” The demonstration was part of

a press conference for the Missing: Anti-Distracted Driving Campaign, o rg a n i ze d by t h e Ca n a d i a n Automobile Association (CAA), the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the provincial ministry of transportation and a traffic safety coalition made up of various organizations formed to spread awareness of the dangers of driving while distracted, which was the cause of 53 deaths in Ontario last year. The four-week campaign, which began officially this past holiday weekend, highlights the important milestones of life like graduating high school or getting married that could be lost forever thanks to the careless actions of distracted drivers, who are 23 times more likely to suffer a serious automobile accident if texting, said Don Bell of the OPP. “If you drive while distracted you’re putting yourself, your passengers and members of the public at risk,” he said. Bell, chief superintendent of the OPP’s highway safety division, said the force investigated over 7,500 collisions on provincial highways in 2011, all of which were caused by the “irresponsible” choices of

drivers. He urged drivers to refrain from any activities that averted their attention from the road, from brushing their hair or fiddling with the radio.

“Even a moment’s distraction can be dangerous,” he said. Teresa Di Felice from the CAA said the Missing campaign was designed to focus on all drivers. “It applies to everybody, every

age group,” said Di Felice, director of government and media relations. “It’s about focusing on your own behaviours and what you can do to change them.” She said CAA was examining current enforcement of the ban on hand-held devices while driving, which was introduced by the Ontario government in 2009, but not prepared at this time to lobby for higher penalties. “We’re always open to discussing if there should be changes, but the issue is not easy to enforce,” she said. “Education is the first step in actually being able to reach people.” The current fine for using a handheld device while driving is $155. Despite the slow speeds of the go-karts, driver Joanne Banfield said her heart was racing as she took part in the demonstration. “We’re in a controlled environment so the potential is low for injury,” said Banfield, a manager at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. “On the road, we don’t often drive at 15 kilometres per hour. “People who are texting might, but they’re definitely not paying attention.”

Man spends month in car to highlight plight of commuters RAHUL GUPTA press@insidetoronto.com Though he suffered from physical discomfort, extreme heat and cramped conditions, Tanner Zurkoski found to his amazement he could adjust to the reality of living in a car for an extended amount of time. The 22 year old undertook and completed the challenge to live behind the wheel to spread awareness of the amount of time commuters across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton region spend in their cars over the course of a year. The campaign was organized by the charity Evergreen Canada. “At first I wondered why I was doing it, but then I fell into a rou-

tine,” said Zurkoski in late July, a few days after the campaign ended. “It’s a mystery how I adjusted, but I just did.” From late June to July, Zurkoski’s only residence was an orange Honda Insight, a hybrid vehicle donated by sponsor Autoshare for the challenge, in which he slept, ate and drove throughout the city. For at least 23 hours a day, Zurkoski had to remain within the car, exiting only for bathroom trips, morning showers and some meals. At night, he wedged his six-footthree inch frame inside the hatchback automobile and somehow found a way to sleep. Worse than the heat and the cramped spaces, said Zurkoski, was

the traffic which was so heavy, he ended up sticking to smaller roadways when it was possible. “After a while, every driver became my enemy and I stopped giving them the benefit of the doubt,” he said. “Nobody uses their turn signal in Toronto.” To pass the time, Zurkoski spoke with interested onlookers about his undertaking, which also served to promote Evergreen’s MOVE Transportation Expo, which is taking place at the Evergreen Brickworks, until the end of October. From inside the vehicle, which was equipped with a camera, the York University film student interviewed urban transportation experts for a series of “webisodes” called

Passenger Seat he posted online throughout the month. He also tweeted status updates from a Twitter account created specifically for the challenge. Zurkoski said many of the people he spoke with over the month were unaware of how long they were spending on their commutes, which at an average of 80 minutes is worse than Los Angeles and New York. “There’s a ‘wow’ factor when people who commute to Mississauga realize how long they are in their cars,” he said. Evergreen spokesperson Anthony Westenberg said Zurkoski, who was chosen from a list of 20 applicants, was mentally equipped to deal with the absurdity of the experience.

“Tanner had a Zen-like approach to the prospect of spending a month in a car,” said Westenberg, who handles public relations for the charity. Westenberg said Zurkoski had fulfilled Evergreen’s hopes for the exercise by getting people to think about congestion in the region and consider other modes of transportation like transit and bicycle to get around. He said Evergreen would not duplicate the campaign in the future. Zurkoski said he is already thinking about his next project, a short film he’s planning to shoot in the next couple of months about rural farming. “I guess I’ve been dreaming about wide, open spaces,” he said.

Most of the proceeds from the sale of the youth’s photography will go towards the continuation of SEYA’s free youth programming. For $40, photography lovers can purchase one of dozens of framed black and white photos the SEYA youth captured, developed and processed all on their own. Ahmadi said the youth were involved in every step of the creation process of their own photos,

from taking their cameras out on the streets to capture their images, to developing the film, and printing out their photos in the darkroom – a true ‘old school’ learning experience for youth born in the digital age. “Most of the time they’ve started with digital, so when they come here they learn all the basics – the manual settings, the chemistry behind it in the darkroom. It’s a more handson approach as opposed to the digital world,” she said. “Instead of sitting behind a computer and using a mouse, the youth were in the darkroom setting their borders, sharpening their images, processing the negatives. They did it all from scratch, and they loved that darkroom process.” SEYA’s Lakeshore’s Streets exhibit is open at Humber’s L Building (south of Kipling Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard West) Monday to Friday, 1 to 5 p.m., and Saturday Aug. 11 and 18 from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information, call 416252-6471 ext. 308.

CX-9: more room, and

zoom-zoom A few short decades ago, most families got by with sedans and station wagons. Until recently, most of these vehicles were trucky and bland. Automakers today are more creative, particularly with crossovers, which often blur the lines between SUV, minivan and wagon. And the Mazda CX-9 – my tester for the week – is among the most stylish of these. The CX-9 is most striking from the side, where its high and rising beltline is topped by a band of windows that narrows towards the rear. Wide shoulders and a tapered greenhouse, accented by a roof-mounted spoiler give it a more athletic look than you’d expect from a family hauler. Ditto for the large wheel openings over big 20-inch alloys, and the trapezoidal dual exhausts. From the front, this crossover’s projector headlamps sweep back like cat’s eyes, either side of the chrome-surround upper grille. But don’t let the CX-9’s low, swoopy profile fool you, as there’s still plenty of space for both passengers and cargo. Behind the third row – yes, this is a seven-passenger vehicle – you’ll find 475 litres of space. That’s more than in many full-size sedans, and there’s even a handy underfloor tray. Drop the third row, and you’re left with 1,368 litres. This is the configuration I used

all week – much of it with two kids bickering in the middle row, and the cargo hold jammed floor-to-ceiling with camping gear. Drop both the second and third rows, and you have 2,851 litres. Cargo volume is important, but convenience and the accessibility are as critical. For starters, all seats fold flat in the CX-9, and do so quickly and easily. Putting everything back in place is a minor effort as well. Getting into the third row is aided by the CX-9’s tilt-and-slide mechanism, which is a one-handed operation that moves the 60/40 second row forward nearly nine inches. Passengers in the second row get their own HVAC controls, and are treated to loads of knee and head room. Seating is comfortable, and in the GT is embellished with contrasting leather inserts. The middle position drops down for an armrest and pair of cupholders – and provides some much-needed separation between kids. The CX-9 is among the pricier offerings in this segment (with a starting MSRP of $36,395), and as such I’d expect a healthy list of standard content. Here, Mazda does not disappoint. The base front-drive GS gets threezone climate control, heated front seats

(eight-way power adjust for driver), sixspeaker AM/FM/CD audio system, Bluetooth, tilt/telescopic steering with audio and cruise controls, rain-sensing wipers, power heated mirrors, 18-inch alloys and more. You can add $2,000 for active torque split all-wheel drive and $2,395 for a luxury package that includes power moonroof, leather upholstery, four-way power adjust for the front passenger and power lumbar support for the driver. My tester was in GT trim (MSRP $45,745), which included all the above GS and luxury package features plus blind spot monitoring, rearview camera, smart key system, driver’s seat memory, upgraded 10-speaker Bose surround sound audio system, 20inch Indeed, the CX-9 can reach 50-grand, not including freight and taxes, which puts it into contention with some premium haulers like Infiniti JX and Acura MDX.

The independent front and rear suspensions (with stabilizer bars) are forgiving enough to soak up potholes and road imperfections, yet tight enough to keep this big vehicle from excessive lean in hard cornering. The CX-9’s steering, with rpm-sensing variable power assist, has more road feel than typical in this kind of vehicle. And the engine – a DOHC 24-valve 3.7litre V6 (273 hp, 270 lb/ft of torque), mated to a six-speed automatic – packs enough punch to launch it smoothly and quickly, and deliver ample passing power on the highway. Transport Canada rates this powertrain at a reasonable 12.7/8.4 litres/100 km (city/ hwy) as a front driver and 12.8/9.0 litres/100 km (city/hwy) with AWD. I wouldn’t expect to see these numbers, unless you’re extremely light on the pedal. My own result was a thirstier 13 litres/100 km combined.

Fuel economy aside, the CX-9 is both practical and fun to drive – and handles more like a mid-size sedan than a large crossover. It delivers the kind of nimbleness and ‘zoom zoom’ that Mazda is known for. – Neil Moore Metroland Media

FIRST LOOK: HYUNDAI ELANTRA GT 2013 Hyundai never sits still when it comes to replacing models even if they are already successful in their segment and that certainly applies to the 2013 Elantra GT.

The GT is actually a five-door hatchback with 551 litres of cargo volume behind the rear folding seats or 1,444 litres with the seats folded. A premium touch on the 2013 Elantra is a repeater turn signal integrated into the outside mirrors.

The 2013 GT is the third model in the Elantra compact joining the Sedan and just released Coupe. The GT features three driver-selectable modes, a first in the segment.

Under the Hood: Power comes from a 1.8litre inline, four-cylinder engine producing 148 hp and 131 lb/ft of torque driving the front wheels through a standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic transmission.

The interior of the 2013 Elantra GT makes full use of Hyundaiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fluidic Sculptureâ&#x20AC;? design language with a S-curve through the dashboard creating a sportscar-like feeling.

â&#x2013; 411 ON THE GT: The GT is actually not a sports sedan as you might assume but a five-door hatchback, or wagon depending on your point of view, that replaces the current Elantra Touring that was steady seller in the compact family hatch department. But the Touring was actually ahead of Hyundaiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new Fluidic Sculpture design language. The GT remedies that with several cues such as a large, hexagonal grille and double upwardly flowing character lines. In this class, utility is very important, with Hyundai claiming more interior volume and maximum cargo capacity than the competition with 531 litres behind the second row split/fold seats and a total cargo volume of 1,444 litres. The GT is positively festooned with storage areas such as front and rear bottle holders, front and rear cupholders, a front console/ bin with auxiliary audio ports, a nifty extra power point in the front passengerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s footwell area for a laptop/etc and, on some models, a cleanable storage tray under the rear cargo floor. Event raises awareness of sickle cell disease MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com For 16 years, Comfort Anyaele did not want people to know her family had been touched by sickle cell disease. Her African-Canadian community is secretive about it, she said this week. “It’s a stigma, it’s a taboo.” But Anyaele doesn’t want sickle cell to be hidden anymore. She wants to fight it. And the first step to doing that is a dinner, dance and auction in Etobicoke this Saturday, Aug. 11. The free event, presented by Anyaele’s group, Comfort and

Smiles for Children and Families with Sickle Cell Disease, follows up her announcement in June that her son has sickle cell disease. That emotional moment for Anyaele came during a forum at TAIBU, a community health centre in Scarborough’s Malvern neighbourhood that has become the first to offer regular support and treatment for those with sickle cell. The meeting heard children can fall behind in school and employees lose their jobs because sickle cell is not being understood. Sickle cell is passed on through a genetic trait that can be detected in a test. A child of two people with the

trait has one chance in four of having the disease, which warps the shape of red blood cells and causes them to rupture or block blood vessels. Saturday’s event, which features three dance groups, starts at 7 p.m. at Elmbank Community Centre on Rampart Road, near Martin Grove Road and Finch Avenue West. Dinner at 8 p.m. will include ugba, an African oil bean salad with fish. It will be sold, but the rest of the food, including moi-moi, a bean pudding prepared with rice, is free. “It will help my community to come out” and address the presence of sickle cell, said Anyaele this week. “I want to save lives.” Staff photo/CYNTHIA REASON

As with all creative types, Sarafin is inspired by the things around her and her own life’s experiences. A writer and illustrator, the two-year Etobicoke School of the Arts graduate who prefers to not share her real name because of the sensitive and controversial topics she sketches and explores in the comic strips she creates, recently released her first graphic novel entitled Asylum Squad Side Story: The Psychosis Diaries. Sarafin’s book, essentially a back story for characters she intends to explore in her future graphic novels, was launched July 15 during a gathering of The Secret Handshake, Canada’s first peer-run, non-clinical support group for those with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Asylum Squad Side Story: The Psychosis Diaries, which Sarafin characterized as experimental fiction written in a stream of consciousness style, takes many of its cues from the “dreadful” year or so she spent at Queen Street West’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) after being diagnosed with schizophrenic affective disorder, a serious yet common mental illness that includes both a loss of reality and mood problems. “The strips have special meaning to me because of what they were about and what they were sharing. The storyline is reflective of my journey. I wanted people to know what it’s like to be

constantly bombarded with information,” she said, adding the story isn’t entirely autobiographical as it’s not her intention to expose her entire life in a graphic novel. “This is sort of my selfappointed project to return my ability to draw and write.” So far, Sarafin said she’s received a lot of support for her project from friends, family members, fellow psychiatric survivors as well as medical professionals in the field eager to gain some insight on their patients’ experiences. Sarafin’s initial incarnation of Asylum Squad was more of a “superhero romp with medicated teenagers.” After leaving CAMH, she connected with an art mentor who helped her revamp her work into a more substantial graphic novel. In the years since her 2006 diagnosis and time spent at CAMH in 2008, Sarafin said she’s chosen to get well and take control of her life crediting her supportive friends

and family members and her healthy lifestyle, not to mention her artwork. “My art helped me get through it. You can take something negative and make an incredible piece of art out of it,” said Sarafin. Her ultimate dream would be to see her work turned into an animated film. “Now my creative juices are flowing more than ever. Remembering the voices and visions I experienced adds to my creativity, comic designs and storylines. I won’t have a creative block for a long time,” said Sarafin, who is about 70 or so pages into her second Asylum Squad graphic novel, a plot narrative she hopes to complete by next summer. “I feel I’ve got lots of content from personal experiences and stories people have shared with me. I could fill at least three to five more books.” Making art for as long as she can remember, Sarafin drew her first comic when she was around nine years old. Her artistic abilities were evident from an early age and Sarafin went on to major in visual art at the Etobicoke School of the Arts. Half self-taught and half professionally trained as an artist, Sarafin also worked in prop making for a time after high school. Deep down she’s always known illustrating and writing comics was her passion. “(Making) comics is something I decided that I love enough that I’ll always do,” said Sarafin, who draws and writes comic strips full time while holding down a part time job to make ends meet.
