Teens learn basic trade skills with Cool Tool School

Police, local church kick off program CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com As mom to three bustling boys – the mayor among them – it should come as no surprise that Diane Ford has patched a few holes in her Etobicoke home’s walls through the years. That do-it-yourself expertise came in handy Thursday morning as she and daughter-in-law Karla Ford, wife of Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford, picked up their putty knives alongside a roomful of local moms and kids at the third edition of 23 Division’s Cool Tool School. “As you can see by how we’re dressed, we’re ready to roll up our sleeves and do the job,” said a casually clad Ford, before taking a seat beside home-repair rookie Chauntelle Bowen, 19, and setting to work on patching some drywall. At the front of the room, Sgt. Kevin Van Schubert of the Neighbourhood

Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS) Initiative talked the participants through the repair job while explaining what the Cool Tool School is all about – community engagement and education. “We want you to see us as not just policemen, but as people. We all have families, we all have houses, and we all have holes in our drywall,” he said. “It doesn’t matter where you come from – how rich or poor you are – you’re going to get a hole in your drywall someday. So this is just one little life skill...this is one little thing that I hope you can learn today.” Offered to young people and single-parent families from the priority neighbourhood of Rexdale, Cool Tool School is an ongoing project based on a partnership between 23 Division and local clergy, explained Supt. Ron Taverner. A strong sup>>>YOUTH, page 5

planning and make it a reality, he said. “It is truly remarkable what we have built with these games,” he said. “The organizing committee has been working for 18 months and now thousands of volunteers are also operating to help the games. So many people are civically engaged and want to be the best host to their province. They are doing an enormous amount of work right now.” Preparations are ongoing with the bulk of the 2,500 athletes arriving on the day of the opening ceremony. In addition to preparing 13 athlete villages and 20 sporting venues, organizers are busy

Excitement is heating up for the thousands of volunteers, participants and sports fans eagerly awaiting the launch of the Ontario Su m m e r Ga m e s ( O S G ) n e x t week. The opening ceremony of the biannual Olympic-style competition is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 16 at Varsity Stadium. Organizing committee chair Rahul Bhardwaj and his team began preparations for the Toronto event only a few months after the completion of the 2010 games in Sudbury. The challenge is to take all that

ensuring proper food preparation, making transportation arrangements and managing the opening ceremony. High level competition The athletes have a lot to do as well, focusing their minds and making final preparations for what is, for some, the highest level of competition of their lives. Every athlete approaches the competition differently, but Lana Perry knows the feeling. A former archery competitor, coach and current administrator with the OSG, Perry understands even the most stoic archers can get high strung,

but have to focus on pre-games training. “Some younger athletes will actually taper their training off so they don’t hurt their muscles and some will amp it up to get more endurance. A lot of what we do becomes mental training. It really differs depending on athletes,” said Perry. Athletes also need to fine tune their equipment in preparation for the event. Even though everyone is coming from Ontario, the humidity and weather in Toronto can alter the functionality of equipment, Perry said. Restringing bows, tweaking rifle sights and double-checking bicycle tires can be the difference

between standing on the podium and watching from the stands. There is a counterbalance to the stress of the OSG. Perry knows the teens involved aren’t here just to compete; they are also excited about the rich social experience of meeting like-minded athletes from across the province. “A lot of the time they come away having met some very great people,” said Perry. “Even just wandering around in the dormitory, they are wearing different uniforms and they get to know each other. Being teenagers, they are very social anyway.” Visit www.ontariosummergames. ca for a full schedule of events.

Etobicoke teen fails to make the cut on Next Star CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Kafaye Rose’s dreams of becoming YTV’s Next Star were dashed this week, after the 15-year-old ‘old soul’ crooner was eliminated from the Canadian singing competition. The Silverthorn Collegiate student earned his way into a top 13 finalist position on the Next Star last week by wowing the judges with his smooth rendition of Bill Withers’ Ain’t No Sunshine. Going into this week’s show – which saw the finalists whittled down to just six – Kafaye’s supportive family offered him some sage words of advice, he told Next Star host Adamo Ruggiero, of Degrassi The Next Generation fame.

“They told me I could do it. That I just need to feel the song and do what I do, and just give it my all,” he said. And that he did, belting out a soulful rendition of Gavin DeGraw’s Not Over You, Kafaye was optimistic his song choice this time around would impress the judges just as much as when he sang Withers’ hit to beat out 4,000 kids aged 15 and under during The Next Star’s cross-country audition tour. “I based (my choice of songs) on everything – how it fits my voice and what message it sends, because I don’t want to be singing a song that I don’t find right,” he told judges Mark Spicoluk, a Universal Music Canada record executive, Juno

Award-winning R&B singer Keshia Chante, and country sweetheart Tara Oram Monday night, after being questioned on why he chose such a “serious and reflective” song. Unfortunately for Kafaye, this year’s crop of young Next Star hopefuls boasted a talented pool of singers, and he wasn’t chosen as a member of the final six. Still, Chante encouraged Kafaye and the other six eliminated singers to continue striving towards their dreams. “Guys, I know it’s hard not to be chosen; I know that pain. I was told ‘no’ a million times before I was given a ‘yes,’” she said. “But I want you to keep believing in yourselves... Please keep fighting for your dreams, because you are talented and you

deserve it.” Those who missed Kafaye perform on Next Star can go to YTV. com to watch this season’s episodes online, or go to his YouTube channel at KafayeRose1 to see him perform covers by artists as varied as Justin Bieber, The Beatles, and Frank Sinatra.

runners. It’s my understanding that 15 people have died since the inception of this event. All the bulls that are forced onto the streets of Pamplona are running towards a bloody and horrific death in the bull ring or slaughterhouse. I doubt that any charitable person working toward a noble cause would knowingly support such a blood sport. If he really wants to “give back to the world” perhaps Mr. Johnson will consider a less violent method to support his favorite charity next year, how about a rugby match? Anything that doesn’t involve the torture and killing of animals, please.

To the editor: Re: ‘TAVIS makes true connection with community,’ Editorial July 27. There were two major problems with your editorial on TAVIS and increased policing in Toronto. First was your assumption that more police presence in our neighbourhoods and communities equals safer communities. Police get maybe 20 times more money than social or recreational programs, but we haven’t seen a comparable increase in the feeling of safety. Why is it that young people in general, and black people in large numbers, feel less safe when groups of police wander their streets? Could it be that, for black youth, being stopped and “carded” four times as often, being physically or mentally harassed when doing nothing wrong and being “known to police” in much higher numbers might make young people (and older people) more intimidated and fearful of police? That’s a true, but not a good, connection. Do they feel safe? Studies have been done all over North America showing that wherever you have more intensive policing you have more criminal charges and arrests, even though many infractions are minor. If the white community was “over-protected” that way, we would see many more whites before the courts for criminal behaviour. While crime needs to have a police response, let’s not criminalize entire ethnic groups, youth or neighbourhoods for the criminal behaviour of a few. Jobs, services, supports and more opportunities to participate in society would go a lot further in making our communities safe. And, speaking of communities. What is the Jane Street “corridor”? Do you live in a corridor? I work in Etobicoke, but I live in a community called Jane-Finch. Respect due.

s the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games wind down this weekend, millions have tuned in to watch the top amateur athletes around the world compete in their respective sports. For many, it instilled a sense of national pride as the athletes strived for gold. We rooted for our local hometown heroes including Justyn Warner from Scarborough, Daniel Nestor from North York and Brittany MacLean from Etobicoke whom we featured in our newspapers. We cheered when they achieved success. We felt their disappointment when they fell short of their goals. The end of the Games should our view not spell the end of our appreciation for our athletes and amaPromote teur sports. Locally, more can be done to interest in promote a stronger interest in sports, especially among young- sport among sters. City council took a step in the wrong direction earlier this youngsters year when it considered raising permit fees by 21 per cent for use of city parks and arenas to bring in new revenue. Amateur sports leagues from Etobicoke to Scarborough balked at the plan, forcing council to back off for this year. Philip Doi, coach of the Scarborough Stingers major mosquito baseball team, voiced his displeasure. “The increased costs will hurt all families. But it’s the kids from disadvantaged neighbourhoods and single-parent families from all corners of our community who will suffer most,” he said. The Etobicoke Girls Softball League learned it would cost its 125-player organization nearly $10,000 in playing field permit fees this year if the plan went through. The value young people can get from positive sports participation is immense, especially as the city deals with increased gun violence this summer. Residents can do their part by volunteering in summer and winter sports leagues. Often, the lack of volunteers has as much to do with the success of the organization as the funding of the league itself. For now, let’s continue to cheer our Canadian Olympic athletes in London, but let’s also remember that the success of those athletes begins with the support they received from their families and the larger community they grew up in. Hopefully, many local young athletes will be inspired by the London Olympics. Closer to home, we can show that support by taking in the upcoming Ontario Summer Games from Aug. 16 to 19 in Toronto where more than 2,500 young athletes from across the province will be competing in 21 different sports. Bull runner should find less barbaric way to support charity To the editor: Re: ‘‘Mad dash for survival’ worth the risk: lawyer,’ News, Aug. 3 In regard to the story about the lawyer who ran with the bulls for charity. I can only assume that Mr. Johnson is not aware of the cruelty of this barbaric spectacle. Though his intentions were good and his philanthropy is admirable, he must be ignorant to the fact these animals forced to participate in this event are treated horribly and many animal welfare activists have been denouncing the ‘Running of the Bulls’ for years. The bulls slip and slide on the streets of Pamplona during the run and are later violently killed – all in the name of tradition.

Tradition has historically been used to justify abhorrent practices, such as child labour and slavery but tradition doesn’t make these things right. Bulls are bred in a farming environment and are not accustomed to the noise of the crowd or being surrounded by people. They are kept in crowded, dark enclosures, and when they are prodded onto the streets with electric shocks, the light momentarily blinds them. They are terrified and are hit by runners with rolled up newspapers. The route has sharp turns, which the bulls cannot navigate well so they often lose their footing and slide into walls, breaking bones and injuring themselves and the

Mayor Rob Ford’s mother Diane took part in Cool Tool School –Youth/Police ProAction program that teaches the art of home repairs, like filling a hole in drywall. The program continued at 23 Division yesterday, under the watchful eye of Const. Jay Bhogal, as student Chauntelle Bowen and Diane Ford use their putty knife.

Youth vandalism inspired pastor to start up program arrange tool donations from local hardware and renovation stores to facilitate the workshops – Cool Tool School was born out of an encounter with a group of kids bored into a destructive streak, he said at Thursday’s session. Late last November, Bowen was visiting a family living in public housing in Newmarket when he heard the family’s back fence being ripped apart by a group of young boys. Bowen shouted for them to stop, scaring them away, but not 15 minutes later the boys returned and resumed their destruction. Again, Bowen confronted the group – this time asking their 13-year-old leader if he’d like a hammer to repair the fence instead. “He said ‘sure,’ so I went out and got him a hammer and he was thrilled,” he said. “Sure enough, 15 minutes later, he

was banging the fence back together.” Six weeks passed, and while on a return visit to the Newmarket family Bowen sought out the boy once again, this time offering him a saw to continue his handiwork. “Then his mother showed up and said ‘hey, don’t give him tools unless you intend to teach him how to properly use them,’” he recalled chuckling. “That was how Cool Tool School was born.” In addition to going home with their own toolkits, Cool Tool School participants will be able to put their names in for additional Carpenter’s Club workshops, Bowen said. The hope, he explained, is to get youth interested in trades programs. “We want to sell youth on the dream,” he said. “Wanna make money? Get out of the hood? Get yourself a trade.”

Monty’s Inn receives funding to host jubilee Coronation Tea Montgomery’s Inn will celebrate the Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee this fall with a Coronation Tea – thanks to funding from the federal government. The Etobicoke museum, located at Dundas Street West and Islington Avenue, will receive $2,500 towards the ’50s-themed event which takes place Sunday, Oct. 14, Etobicoke Centre MP Ted Opitz announced. “This funding will allow residents an opportunity to reflect on the traditions which Canada is based on and to celebrate the cultural impor-

tance of our monarchy,” he said in a statement announcing the funding on behalf of Heritage Minister James Moore. The Coronation Tea at the Inn, which will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the queen’s ascension to the throne, will feature pinwheel sandwiches and other 1950s-era refreshments, piano entertainment, cake, and, of course, a traditional English tea from 1 to 4 p.m. As part of this year’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the Canadian government is providing support to a wide range of organizations and

projects across the country, including many unique, grassroots celebrations like that at Montgomery’s Inn to mark the anniversary and highlight how Canada has evolved over the last 60 years. Staff file photo/MARY GAUDET

Should you sell before buying? You want to move. You want to buy a new home. Unfortunately, you are already living in one and aren't sure whether you should sell it before buying, or perhaps purchase one first and let the chips fall where they may. To help with this, take a look at some signs to watch for during

the decision making process.

Signs you should buy before selling: • You found your dream home: It happens. We walk into a home and it is everything we've ever wanted and, now, can't live without. If the home is within

your budget and it makes sense for you to buy first, snap it up before someone else does. • It's a sellers' market: If there is a high demand for homes, then buying before selling is a wise decision. You get a new home quickly and you can likely unload your

old home right away. • You can afford to do it: If having two mortgages is not a huge financial stretch, then this may be a consideration. Before you dive in, do some homework and find out how quickly homes in your area sell; then visit your financial planner to crunch numbers.

Signs you should sell before buying: • You're not willing to budge on price: If you are not flexible on your asking price, then it may be best to sell before buying a home. When you buy first, there's a good chance that you'll have to bend on your asking price if no one is biting. • You don't mind moving around: If you sell your home first, you can add a

The search for your dream home ends here.

Paint like a pro You’ve decided to update a room in your home with a fresh coat of paint. You’ve selected the colours, purchased the paint and cleared your weekend plans. So you’re all set to start painting, right? Wrong. Paint isn’t usually the culprit of a bad paint job. But cutting corners while prepping a space is. Follow these few simple steps before you start painting and you’ll have a finished room that looks like it was painted by a professional. • Remove obstacles. Take down picture frames, wall décor, removable fixtures and the nails holding them up. Don’t forget about electrical, light and phone switch covers. Clear furniture out. Anything you cannot remove can be placed in the centre of the room and covered with plastic or drop cloths. • Inspect the wall. Any loose paint, holes or cracks should be fixed before priming, and especially before painting. • Eliminate grime. After surface repairs have been made, the wall needs to be cleaned. Use a good grease-cutting detergent to remove unwanted material and residue from the surface. • Tape like a pro. To protect your trim and door

frames, be sure to properly adhere a high-quality painter’s tape. Choose one that can be used on all types of surfaces and will also deliver crisp paint lines without leaving a residue behind. • Protect your floor. Use plastic or fabric drop cloths to protect your floor while you’re painting. Even if you’re an experienced painter, it’s better to take the extra step than end up with a damaged floor. To keep everything in its place, use doublesided dropcloth tape. It is a useful little tool. The dual adhesive secures drop cloths on both sides, preventing slipping and shifting. • Use quality tools. The quality of the applicators is going to affect the final finish of your room. Invest in a set of durable brushes and roller covers that will last longer and perform better over an extended period of time, saving you money and time. Always remember to pay close attention to the pre-painting process. As tempting as it may be to simply roll on a fresh coat of paint, doing a little prep work can go a long way in achieving a professional looking paint job.

Choose your words carefully Study reveals the best and worst words commonly used in real estate listings

Worst Words

would be that you are only appealing to a certain portion of buyers instead of the whole market. Add the square footage of the home in the listing rather than using those words which have a negative connotation. • Freshly painted You've invested a couple hundred dollars to paint your home and you think it looks pretty good. If you put the promise of a house as 'freshly painted,' homebuyers might wonder if that's the only thing that's been revamped.

Here are the worst phrases a seller could use in the sale of their home: • Motivated: While you might expect a word like “motivated” to indicate that the homeowner is willing to negotiate on price, it seems this word has the opposite effect. It makes sense for the seller to focus more on the listing and less on describing themselves personally. • Starter home: When a potential home buyer sees the words “starter home” on a listing, they immediately imagine a tiny home made for 1.5 people. It indicates that the property is small and economical for first time home buyers. The pitfall of saying “starter home”

The research also determined the five most powerful words and phrases to get you started: • Beautiful / gorgeous:Homes that were called “beautiful” sold, on average, 15 per cent faster. While most home buyers are thrilled to get a bargain, they still put a major emphasis on the condition of a home and its esthetic appeal. • Move-in condition: This tells a home buyer that your home needs no repairs, changes or moderations; it is perfect and ready to be lived in as

According to research done by a professor at the University of Guelph, real estate ad phrasing has a strong effect on the sales price and a home's time on market.

Best language

soon as you hand over the keys. • Turnkey: The word 'turnkey' is often associated with a home that is in fantastic condition. Another word that also catches the eye is 'immaculate'. • Curb appeal: When a home is listed with the words “curb appeal” many home buyers perk up with anticipa-

tion. Words like “landscaping” also did well in the survey because a home that is beautiful inside and outside appeals to the masses. • Gourmet kitchen: There is no doubt that the kitchen is one of the most important, if not the most important room in a home. So it is no surprise

What will it cost to buy a new home?

to learn that words like “granite” and “gourmet kitchen” translated into a higher sale price. If your kitchen isn't a gourmet one, do minimal upgrades and use another proven phrase with homeowners like “newly remodeled”. – newscanada.com

“Service is our Motto” Tina Klein Stanley, Broker

Have you ever booked a vacation thinking you’re getting an amazing deal, only to get a rude awakening when the total cost comes in after those pesky taxes and fees? Some home buyers have a similar experience with their first home – but worse, because when the purchase amount is greater, typically so are the additional fees. Buying a home means a large upfront financial commitment followed by on-going monthly expenses. After the upfront costs, a basic rule is that your total housing costs shouldn’t exceed one-third of your gross income. To prevent sticker shock, do some research and thoroughly consider all of the costs of ho-

meownership. When you understand the true cost, you can set a budget that reflects what you can really afford. Take a look at some costs home buyers should consider:

Upfront costs: • • • •

Down payment Closing costs Land transfer taxes Fees (e.g. notary, legal and title insurance fees) • Moving costs Prepare your finances by establishing a big financial cushion. This allows you to make a sizeable down payment, and still cover all the other upfront costs.

On-going costs:

• • • •

Mortgage payments Property taxes Cost of utilities Cost of maintenance In addition to these costs, if you opt for a variable interest rate mortgage, be mindful that interest rates could rise, causing your mortgage payments to increase or increase your amortization period, so factor that into your budget as you’re planning,. Setting a budget should be the first step in your house-hunt. It will help frame your search. Depending on where you live, there could be additional costs (for example additional travel costs to and from work), so do your research to make sure your budget accounts for everything.

REXDALE REAL ESTATE

At the end of February, beginning of March Real Estate Prices in Rexdale jumped about $30 – 40,000.00. The best time to sell your home in the last 7 months was from the end of February to end of April. We had an enormous shortage of properties For Sale and any home that was put on the market generally sold within a week and had Multiple offers, driving prices up. The Average time to sell a Detached Home in Rexdale in April was 12 days. The Market slowed down the first week of May. We had more properties coming on the Market and Multiple Offers were no longer the norm. A multiple Offer occurred only if you dramatically underpriced a property. In May it took longer to sell the house because there was more competition. In June we had more properties come on the market, Multiple Offers disappeared and it took longer to sell a home. The Average time to sell a Detached Home in June was 22 days. The Real Estate Experts have been saying for the last 6 months that we’re in a housing bubble and prices are going to adjust lower. The disagreement has been whether we’re looking at a major crash or a soft landing. Everyone agrees that an adjustment is imminent. No one is sure when. The Federal Government has been trying to do everything to slowdown this market. Which is one of the reasons why The Federal Government adjusted the Mortgage Rules, because they could not hike interest rates. The new Mortgage Rules effect the first time Buyer (Any buyer with less than 20% down payment effective July 9th – the Amortization Schedule can be no longer than 25 years instead of 30 years before the changes). The decreased Amortization schedule increases the amount of the payment thereby are taking up more disposable income and resulting in fewer who can afford to qualify by CMHC standards. Also I would point out the majority of Rexdale buyers are in fact first time buyers. The Real Estate market in Rexdale is changing. Certainly the July Real Estate Market has been much slower. We’ve sold fewer properties and Properties that were well priced a couple of weeks ago and should have SOLD based on the market Analysis done at the time are now overpriced.Timing is everything! I f you would like more information give me a call at (416) 743-3832. Keep Smiling!

Etobicoke dinner one of five held across Canada

Reading club marks end of season with dress up party at Mimico library Mimico Centennial Library is set to host the Imagination Domination End Of Summer Bash next week. The Wednesday, Aug. 15 event, which will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Mimico Centennial Auditorium, is being planned as a goodbye to the TD Summer Reading Club for another year. All are invited to dress up as a favourite character from a favourite

book, let imaginations run wild and win prizes. The TD Summer Reading Club is a joint initiative between TD Bank Group, Toronto Public Library, and Library and Archives Canada. Every year a theme is selected from suggestions made across the country – this year’s theme was Imagine. For more information, go to tdsummerreadingclub.ca/

>>>from page 1 Muslims break their fast after sunset daily during the holy month of Ramadan, which ends Aug. 18. Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan as religious observance, a time of spiritual reflection, improvement and increased devotion and worship when Muslims are expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam. Last year, the dinner raised nearly

$9,000 for famine relief. This year’s Iftaar dinner will support the education of youth in Somalia, one of five dinners being held in major cities across Canada. The dinners follow the example led by the United for Somali Students (USS), a registered charity in the United Kingdom, which is sponsoring the education of 200 Somali youth in their country. USS’s goal is “to empower Somali

youth in the Horn of Africa and across the diaspora to overcome the adversities of conflict and poverty through the provision of education and providing self-reliant communities...” reads the USS website. In a perfect world, school and work hours would run concurrently. But the average school day begins at 9:00 a.m. and continues until 3:00 p.m., while the average work day lasts from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Roughly 80 percent of families in North America have both parents working, and have to make important choices when it comes to after school child care. Here are a few options to consider for the upcoming school year.

gap between school and work. Students who carpool may be dropped off early at the driver’s home and stay there after school until their parents get home. In addition, many families have welcomed older relatives back into their homes in light of the struggling economy. In such instances, grandparents or aunts and uncles can look after the kids once school has ended for the day.

AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS Some children are enrolled in care centers that watch children before school, bus them to school and then return in the afternoon to pick up the children again. This is one of the more costly options in child care. However, it may be more educationally structured than the care programs provided at school. Students who participate in sports or academic clubs may have an arrangement to stay with a teacher, coach or club administrator until their parents

are home from work. When the decision is made, there are some questions parents should ask before enrollment. • What is the ratio of caregivers to students? • What is the cost of the program? • ow are delayed opening days and early dismissal days handled? Holidays and breaks? • What happens if I arrive late? • What activities will take place? • Is there ample time for homework? • Are caregivers teachers or volunteers? • Are background checks conducted? • Is financial assistance available? • How are emergencies handled? • If my child is absent, do I receive a refund for that day? These are just some of the questions to ask, and parents are encouraged to come up with their own to find the best program for their children.

McGuinty Government Committed to Transparency and Accountability Ontario is proposing to strengthen its Lobbyists Registration Act to ensure greater transparency and accountability among lobbyists, government and the public. The existing act already outlines requirements for lobbyists who need to register their activities with the provincial government. Proposed amendments would enhance the existing act by:

DR. SHAFIQ QAADRI, MPP Member of Provincial Parliament Etobicoke North

Giving the Integrity Commissioner more enforcement powers, including the ability to prohibit individuals from lobbying. Giving the Integrity Commissioner new investigative powers, including the ability to compel testimony and obtain key documents. Requiring lobbyists to identify the specific MPP and ministers’ offices they lobby. Preventing lobbyists from accepting additional fees for preferred outcomes. Prohibiting lobbyists from providing paid advice to a ministry and lobbying on the same subject matter.

Providing the Integrity Commissioner with the ability to establish a lobbyist code of conduct Incorporating for-profit and not-for-profit organizations under the same category of ‘in-house’ lobbyists, treating both classes of lobbyists the same and capturing more lobbying activity. The government will also propose changes to the Cabinet Ministers’ and Opposition Leaders’ Expenses Review and Accountability Act. Cabinet ministers, parliamentary assistants and their staff already post expense information. If passed, these changes would require opposition leaders and their staff to make their expense information available to the public. Making government more transparent and accountable is part of the McGuinty government’s plan to ensure it stays on track to eliminate the deficit and strengthen the economy. A strong economy protects the services that mean most to families — health care and education.
