Ending violence against women focus of campaign Judy Gopaul’s proudest moment as a community leader involved in the Neighbourbours, Friends and Family (NFF) program came when a seven-year-old boy put up his hand during one of her presentations and asked if the bullying he witnessed at school was a form of abuse.

It was then, she said, that she knew for a fact that the message of Rexdale Women’s Centre (RWC) education program about violence against women was ringing through loud and clear.

“Even a child listening to this kind of information was able to learn and acknowledge what abuse is and recognize it,” she said. “The information we were giving is important to everybody: a child, a male, a female, everybody. Abuse is everywhere, with everyone.”

Gopaul was just one of 15 community leaders involved with the NFF campaign who were recognized with certificates of appreciation from Rexdale Women’s Centre and Mayor Rob Ford and Etobicoke North Councillor Vincent Crisanti at an event held at the Rexdale >>>SOCIETAL, page 20

The provincial government will be putting $20 million into programs to prevent youth violence — funding programs that will provide employment, expand policing and increase after-school programs — in the wake of the mass shooting on Danzig Street.

The plan, announced Wednesday,

by Ontario Children and Youth

Services Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins, is a broad-based plan touching on enforcement and prevention, and based on recommendations from the Roots of Youth Violence report, co-authored by former MPP Alvin Curling and Roy McMurtry in 2008.

Curling will become a special adviser to Hoskins on the program.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Toronto will celebrate the 21st anniversary of Ukraine’s independence this year with the annual Flavours of Ukraine festival in Etobicoke.

The full day of fun, games, Ukrainian food and live entertainment will begin on Saturday, Aug. 25 starting at 11 a.m. at Centennial Park.

The all-ages event embraces and celebrates the multicultural dimension of the Greater Toronto Area, so everyone is invited. A full slate of live performers will entertain from the main stage all day, including Ukrainian folk dancing ensembles and vocalists, while the Flavours of Ukraine Food Fair will feature plenty of perogies, meat-on-a-stick, cabbage rolls and kobassa.

For the kids, a children’s playground will include inflatable rides and a crafts area, while the sports fans in the crowd will be invited to play soccer, baseball and volleyball.

This year’s vendors in the bazaar will be selling clothing, handicrafts, gifts and food. There will also be a beer garden, plus live band for the evening outdoor dance 7 to 11 p.m. Gates to this year’s Flavours of Ukraine festival open at 11 a.m., with the official ceremonies kicking off at 1 p.m. Parking is free. There is a suggested donation of $5 at the gate.

Retired teacher sets lofty fundraising goal Donna Hamill set to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro to benefit organ transplants at Toronto General CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com

D

onna Hamill is set to bring community fundraising to new heights this fall when she attempts to reach the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro – a feat she hopes will raise $25,000 for the hospital that saved her husband’s life 17 years ago.

Hamill’s late husband Andy was 67 and at death’s door in 1995 when a liver transplant at Toronto General Hospital gave him a new, 13-year lease on life. Now, four years after his death, Hamill plans to repay the generosity of her husband’s anonymous donor by climbing to Kilimanjaro’s 19,341-foot peak in October, raising both money and awareness of the importance of becoming an organ donor along the way.

“If it hadn’t been for the fact that someone donated their liver, my husband wouldn’t have lived those extra 13 years. It’s an amazing thing that this person did,” she said. “And the thing is, there is still such a need.”

While to date less than 20 per cent of eligible Ontarians have registered consent to donate their organs, there are currently more than 1,500 people in Ontario on the waiting list for an organ transplant.

Every three days someone on that list dies waiting for a life-saving transplant.

The Greater Toronto Area, in particular, has a ‘very dismal’ record of donation rates, Hamill reported.

“What that means is, if a person in the Toronto area needs a transplant, they’re really at a disadvantage because of the low rate of people agreeing

tant. Unfortunately, people do pass away and they take good organs with them – and that would give someone else just a whole new life.”

Toronto General

and Western Hospital Foundation’s Jodi Frers lauded Hamill for being an inspiration.

“It’s incredible. We rely on the generosity of people exactly like Donna who

take their personal, challenging situation and go back out into the community and use that to raise awareness and funds,” she said. “And when people like Donna take their efforts beyond writing a cheque - which we are always incredibly grateful for – and say ‘in addition to that I’m going to really challenge myself physically,’ I think it inspires other people.”

Hamill said her husband would have loved that she had chosen such an adventurous method of raising both awareness and funds for a cause that hits especially close to home.

“He would have thought this is awesome,” the 69-year-old retired Etobicoke guidance counselor (known as Mrs. Gorbold to her students) said with a smile. “He was very athletic. He was a skier and a golfer, and he loved to travel.”

After hiking New Zealand’s Milford Track and through the hills of Thailand in recent years, Hamill will embark on her most ambitious trek up Africa’s highest mountain in Tanzania on Oct. 5.

To prepare for the sevenday hike up Kilimanjaro, she’s been undertaking a rigorous training regimen – including leg work, squats, cardio, and plenty of uphill hiking.

All that hard work will pay off, she said, if she’s able to raise her goal of $25,000 towards the purchase of a Fibroscan. The $100,000 piece of equipment, which is described

by Toronto General Hospital as a “simple, painless and non-invasive ultrasound test,” will help doctors identify individuals who are at high risk of developing liver cancer without putting them

through a painful biopsy test.

“The use of the Fibroscan will eliminate the need for a liver biopsy and allow patients to avoid biopsy-associated risk,” hospital literature on the topic reads, noting that in addition to being painful and invasive, biopsies can sometimes be inaccurate and produce life-threatening complications.

Hamill said she’s motivated to reach Kilimanjaro’s summit and raise the $25,000 towards the Fibroscan by the desire to give thanks to Toronto General Hospital’s transplant unit for their ‘phenomenal,’ life-saving care of her husband. Before the transplant, Andrew ‘Andy’ Hamill could barely lift his head he was so sick. After the transplant, he was back on the ski hills and golf courses he loved so much, Hamill said.

“The transplant unit at Toronto General is phenomenal – it’s absolutely world class,” she gushed.

“It’s really, really, really an amazing place. His care was extraordinary.”

So far, Hamill has been about to raise nearly $15,000 towards her goal of $25,000. Garage sale thefts are wrong

We must all take next step to curb youth violence

To the editor: If you are going to a garage sale, don’t steal from the people who are hosting it.

They work hard to get it all set up.

I have had jewelry stolen at my garage sale and we are getting to a point where we are not going to have them any more if people are going to steal from us.

Ask to purchase the item for less or don’t buy it, but don’t steal from a garage sale.

People are trying to make a bit of cash with their stuff they are already getting rid of at a great price. Just because it’s at a garage sale, stealing is still a crime.

he provincial announcement this week to put $20 million into programs to curb youth violence will undoubtedly be embraced by the at-risk communities in the city that will benefit from this additional funding.

In the wake of the Danzig Street shooting last month, which killed two people and left 24 injured, residents across the city were demanding action.

But the youth action plan outlined by Ontario Children and Youth Services our view Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins on Wednesday should not be Community seen as the ultimate solution to resolving the issue of youth involvement violence.

Rather, as Hoskins noted him- is key to safe self, it’s just a starting point.

More funding for the Summer neighbourhoods Jobs for Youth Program is welcome as well as the private-sector job initiative that will provide summer recreation activities for 3,500 more children and youth in the Greater Toronto Area.

The additional $5 million a year to strengthen after school programs will help support community initiatives in priority neighbourhoods across the city including Lawrence Heights in North York, Jamestown in Etobicoke and Kingston-Galloway in Scarborough.

This news is positive.

Secure funding for the TAVIS (Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy) and PAVIS (Provincial AntiViolence Intervention Strategy) programs is also a step in the right direction.

That said, investing more money into good programs alone won’t succeed in addressing the root issue of why young people get into trouble.

Community involvement is just as integral in helping disadvantaged youth feel a sense of connection, subsequently making neighbourhoods safer.

That could mean volunteering at local organizations, which offer those youth programs that just received funding from the province.

Make a point to attend community events like the East Scarborough Festival Market on Thursdays, or Flavours of Ukraine festival in Etobicoke and Rastafest at Downsview Park in North York both taking place tomorrow.

Residents in every neighbourhood should get to know the police officers serving their community and develop a positive relationship with them.

At the end of the day, though, the work that goes into changing the culture of a community by getting involved is far more sustainable and effective over the long-term.

Readers offer suggestions to end gang violence It’s clear we have a problem with guns and gangs in Toronto. So what’s the solution?

Do we want Guardian Angels patrolling our streets?

Do we want Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti to become a self-imposed czar in the battle of gangs?

No. What we do need is an immediate, co-ordinated and comprehensive plan of action that does not take days to form but only hours.

When Toronto was hit by an outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003, community leaders and politicians moved fast to combat Toronto’s reputation from being further bruised.

Toronto staged the rock concert of all rock concerts featuring the Rolling Stones.

Thousands came out; in fact it was billed as the largest ticketed outdoor concert in Canadian history.

The city didn’t stop there.

Festivals such as Luminato were created to showcase to the world that Toronto was indeed a world-class city.

In our opinion their actions worked.

Why? Because they were focused, efficient and didn’t waste time. They acted because

they knew that if they didn’t it would be too late to save Toronto from being branded as a place not to visit. They simply knew what had to be done. slow to act How is it then that when Toronto is hit with such devastating gun crimes like we have just witnessed this summer, we suddenly blank out or resort to tired practices of dealing with gun crime.

We have reams of statistics, bundles of studies and reports from many sources reporting on how to tackle gun crime, but we seem to fail at moving forward with an actual plan, a new plan.

In the immediate aftermath of the Danzig Street shooting, Premier Dalton McGuinty rolled funding for Toronto’s Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS).

TAVIS includes roving units of 72 officers deployed into Toronto’s hot spots and

receives about $5 million a year from the province to operate.

Great start but not enough to truly combat such a deep social problem. For this we do need a deeper co-ordinated effort in tackling the problem.

What we suggest is a truly direct and interim approach that can be deployed immediately. We propose that 10 per cent of Toronto’s land transfer tax – about $30 million – be immediately deployed to Toronto’s front line responders: police, community youth engagers, those managing at risk youth programs, those running on the ground notfor-profits working in gun crime hot spots and the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC).

Police can use the additional allotment for more officers on the streets or to use the funds as part of TAVIS or as they see fit. Police have

the tactical operational experience and knowledge to get guns off our streets. They just need the resources. The notfor-profits and youth engagers can use the interim influx of funding to identify and engage with at-risk youth. As front line workers, they know more than any politician or government official on what works best.

The TCHC could use extra funds to ensure their properties are safe and clean – better locks on doors; extra security cameras; better lighting in the complexes; and to ensure their buildings are properly maintained.

Now, we are neither experts nor do we hold our idea as the key to ending gun crime in the city. We, however, are engaged and concerned citizens of Toronto. We want our community leaders to start thinking outside the box and to act instead of talk a good game.

CrimeStoppers rewards will be doubled when the tip leads to the prevention of gun violence.

The Summer Jobs for Youth Program will be expanded, to provide 320 new after-school jobs during the school year, increasing to 440 part-time jobs in 2013.

The ministry will also launch a private-sector jobs initiative, and will provide summer employment for 220 more young people through school board employment, providing summer recreation activities for another 3,500 more children and youth in the Greater Toronto Area.

After school programs will be strengthened, and the province will put $5 million a year into a Youth Opportunities Fund, that will support community initiatives in priority and disadvantaged neigbhourhoods.

The plan comes just a month after the mass shoot-

ing on Danzig Street, which saw two people killed and 24 people injured (23 by gunfire) when shots were fired during a street party July 16.

The plan received accolades from the New Democratic Party. Justice critic Jagmeet Singh said the implementation of the recommendations from the 2008 report was long ovedue. “Ontario needs to move forward and implement these proposals,” he said. “For years the province has been studying these issues, we don’t want to see another report sit on the shelf so we’ll be paying close attention to these initiatives.”

Program helps Alzheimer’s sufferers manage disease Etobicoke Services for Seniors (ESS) Support Services will host two upcoming programs for people struggling with chronic diseases and Alzheimer’s this fall.

The Coping with Alzheimer’s free counselling program for individuals and family members coping with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias will be held

at ESS Support Services, 2245 Lawrence Ave. W. on Friday, Sept. 7.

Participants will be provided with a safe, confidential space to ask questions, talk about their feelings, obtain information, practical suggestions and coping strategies.

The session, which is funded by the Ontar io

Trillium Foundation, is facilitated by a registered social worker from the Alzheimer Society of Toronto.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED Registration is required as space is limited.

The Take Charge of Your Health program will help participants discover ways

to live a healthy life with chronic conditions through a free seven-week chronic disease self-management program Sept. 27 to Nov. 8 from 2 to 4:30 p.m.

Anyone living with or acting as a caregiver of a person with a chronic condition, such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, asthma, emphysema, or depression is

welcome to join the program.

Learn to cope with pain and fatigue, manage stress and anxiety, stay independent and handle changes in your life when your health changes.

Ontario Trillium Foundation and St. Joseph’s Health Centre Urban Family.

Seven interior fixes to sell a home fast “Staging,” is what real estate experts call presenting the home in the best light so that potential buyers can envision themselves moving right in.

Just a few changes here and there can position a home to sell faster than the competition.

Strap on your skates Hockey season is just around the corner. Every year I get asked for advice from new hockey parents on how to prepare their child for youth hockey. In my opinion, there are two main areas to look at.

PHYSICAL PREPARATION Firstly, make sure that your child has all the required protective and specific equipment to play hockey. Important gear includes:helmet with face shield, throat protector, shoulder pads,

elbow pads, athletic support (jock or jill), hockey pants, hockey gloves, shin pads, skates, and a hockey stick. Make sure everything fits properly, or it won’t work as intended.You don’t need to buy the best of everything, used equipment is fine if it’s in decent shape and fits well.

As with any sport, ensure that prior to a game or practice, your child is well rested, fed and hydrated. Bring a water bottle to the game with their name on it.

KEEP IT FUN The most important thing to remember is that hockey is supposed to be fun for kids. Remember, good hockey players and parents show respect for officials, coaches and opponents, accept defeat,and are gracious in victory.

The first day of school can create butterflies in the stomachs of parents and children. However, following a few tips can alleviate feelings of nervousness.

August and September are prime months for the return to school. Whether this is a child’s first time entering the classroom or he or she has done the backto-school thing multiple times, it’s not uncommon for feelings of anxiety to arise.

There are expectations and unknowns with each and every school year for both the students and their parents. Pivotal years, such as kindergarten, 6th grade for middle-schoolers or freshman year of high school can create added levels of jitters because these years mark entry to a new school or new routine. But keeping a few pointers in mind can alleviate some of the fears.

Keep a routine. It is important for parents and students to get back into the school swing of things a few weeks prior to the first day of school. Start setting

alarm clocks for the hour at which kids will have to awaken, and get them in the habit of rising from bed and starting the day. Try to schedule something to do each day that will be the inspiration for getting moving, such as school supply shopping. Take the carpool route to school, or find out where the school bus stop may be. These practice sessions will enable the family to decide how much time is needed to get ready in the morning and make changes accordingly.

Mention school frequently.

Begin talking about school and what is necessary to prepare. Be sure to talk about the more enjoyable aspects of school, such as seeing friends, participating in extracurricular activities and even the change of scenery school provides. Mention the things your child may expect. Hearing about school frequently can reduce feelings of anxiety.

Visit the school. If this is the student’s first time entering this school, you can take advantage of

orientation days for new students or schedule an individual visit to the school. A tour and a meeting with the principal will also assuage some fears of the unknown. This can also calm any apprehension parents may have, because they, too, will know the layout of the school, its policies, and who will be watching over their children.

Don’t be nervous. Children often look to their parents for guidelines on how to behave. A parent who is overly nervous or sad about the first day of school could make their kids nervous, too. Put on a brave face and keep any anxiety hidden until kids have left for school.

The first day of school can be a time of uncertainty for students and parents. Adults are facing a new stage in their lives, and children are awaiting a classroom of new faces and requirements.

Preparing for the first day can alleviate some of the anxiety about heading off to school for a new year.

Encourage kids to live more active lifestyles Unlike their parents, today’s kids often forgo sandlot baseball or games of tag for much more sedentary fare like video games or surfing the Internet. While video games and Internet access aren’t lacking in value, many parents would prefer their kids be more active.

Though it can be difficult to get kids off the couch, there are ways parents can help their kids live and embrace a more active lifestyle, which can have benefits both now and down the road.

Make it a team effort Parents who are concerned their kids aren’t getting enough daily exercise should ask themselves if they’re getting enough exercise themselves. Kids aren’t the only ones who need daily exercise. A good way to encourage kids is to join them. Make daily physical activity a team effort. Kids don’t have to join Mom and Dad at the gym. Instead, sign them up for an extra curricular activity in organized sports or clubs like Brownies and Scouts. Kids often take cues from their parents even if their parents aren’t aware.

Parents who live more active lfestyles are much more likely to have kids who are active as well. Set a positive example for kids and include them in your own routine whenever the opportunity arises.

Minimize television time Its recommended by pediatritions that older kids watch no more than two hours of television per day.

But as any parent knows, most kids average much more than two hours of television per day. To decrease that tube time, parents can take televisions

out of their kids’ bedrooms, instead putting televisions only in the common rooms which will also allow parents to more closely monitor what their kids are watching.

Encourage extracurricular activities While parents might find it hard to believe, today’s kids, even with all the video games and additional gadgets, still get bored. Boredom might be contributing to sedentary lifestyles. To combat boredom, parents should encourage extracurricular activities that get kids off the couch. Whether it’s participating in team sports, joining the local or school theater program or even getting a job, parents should encourage kids to do more after school than come home and turn on the television or play video games.

Emphasize activity instead of exercise Many adults associate exercise with going to the gym or running on the treadmill, both of which are tough to get excited about. Kids might be equally indifferent and less enthusiastic about exercise. Instead of emphasizing exercise, encourage kids to be active.

Encourage kids to get outdoors and pursue interests other than video games or television shows.

Express interest in kids’ activities Parents should express interest in their kids’ activities. When parents express an interest in their kids’ activities, kids are more likely to embrace those activities, something that’s especially beneficial if the activities in question are ones that get kids off the couch.

Over the last 18 months, the volunteer leaders – 10 women and five men from various ethno-racial backgrounds including West Indian, Indian, Pakistani, Bengali, African, Spanish, Lebanese, Caribbean,

Assyrian and French Canadian – attended a one-week, full-time training session on violence against women, then took that knowledge out to their communities.

Funded by the Ontario Women’s Directorate, the NFF campaign has helped

raise public awareness about violence against women in the immigrant and refugee communities through community leader-led presentations to their ethnic-specific communities on violence against women.

that they want to be a part of this,” she said.

“These brave men and women have come forward to learn more and be supportive of their own communities on issues of violence against women.

That takes courage and it takes leadership.”

The main focus of the message the leaders were tasked with disseminating, said NFF’s project co-ordinator Sonya Aslan, is that violence against women is not a family problem, but a societal one. And to fix it will require the participation of the entire community of neighbours, friends and families - hence the name of the program.

“A lot of the time when we’re working with the community, they tell us when it comes to violence against women, they can’t get involved because it’s a private issue. That is not the case,” she said. “So what we’re trying to do with this program is help that mindshift – a societal mindshift – that it’s more a public rather than an individual issue. We reach out to victims and people who know the victims and provide information and strategies.”

Towards those ends, the NFF program distributes literature in English, Pa k i s t a n i , Sp a n i s h , Arabic, Tamil, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Farsi on tips for the neighbours, friends and families of abused women and their abusers. The brochures include information on how to recognize the warning signs of abuse, how to reach out to an abused woman, how to

help develop a safety plan for women fleeing abusive situations, how to support them once they’ve left and how to talk to men who are abusive.

Through 30 different community presentations held at local schools, apartment buildings, homes, donut shops and religious houses, the 15 community leaders involved with the Rexdale NFF campaign reached a total of 354 local residents with their message.

Sabra Desai, manager of community partnership development at Humber College and a member of Rexdale Women’s Centre’s NFF advisory committee, lauded the leaders for their hard work and dedication to such a worthwhile campaign.

“The NFF campaign was not just an educational campaign. The NFF campaign has ignited in every community that it has touched, the flame of social justice. It has highlighted how denial and secrecy within communities assists in perpetuating gendered violence,” she said. “The NFF participants might think of themselves as only providing basic information on gendered violence, however you have done much more. You have given a voice to those who are too afraid or ashamed to speak for themselves; you have opened the doors of secrecy and silence to give others the courage to speak up and seek help within the community.”
