Grassroots petition finds success at city hall Canadian boxing legend George Chuvalo to have community centre named after him in the Junction neighbourhood where he grew up LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com B ox i n g l e g e n d G e o r g e Chuvalo’s name will officially adorn a new 7,000-square-foot community centre that’s being built as part of a Junction Triangle townhouse development, voted Toronto City Council at its meeting earlier this month. “Now that it’s passed council, it’s a reality. It’s really going to happen,” said Junction Triangle resident Scott Dobson, who was instrumental in initiating a petition calling for a ‘George Chuvalo Neighbourhood Centre’. “It finally dawned on (Chuvalo) that it’s going to happen and I think he’s really moved.” The new community centre will be part of the ‘Wallace Walk’ townhouse development at 362 Wallace Ave. “The best part of this is

Chuvalo lived, worked, and trained in the community for many years before his boxing career led him to international fame. The story has garnered lots of attention from the sports media. Through his petitioning, Dobson said he found that very few people don’t know who Chuvalo is. “People are inspired and moved by his story postboxing. There’s more to him than boxing – his life has been a series of ups and downs,”

Dobson said. “His story is bigger than boxing,” Dobson said. “Boxing is one part of a bigger story.” The community centre was made possible by Section 37 development funds. Following a Request for Proposals process earlier this year, operation of the new community centre was awarded to the Christie Ossington Neighbourhood Centre, a multi-service organization that provides community-based programming for everyone, including highneeds’ children, youth-at-risk, homeless men and women, vulnerable community members, newcomers, or anyone who might require extra support (conccommunity.org). In part because of his work with youth, local Councillor Ana Bailão said it is a fitting tribute to name the centre after Chuvalo.

T

oday is Christmas Eve and we’re hoping our readers are able to slow things down a bit and start enjoying some holiday time with family and friends. Though we’re sure there will still be lots of last-minute shoppers rushing around this afternoon and early evening getting the final perfect gifts, and we wish them luck, the holiday season is when residents would do well to step back from the hustle and bustle of their busy daily lives and find some time to focus on what’s really important to them. Spending time with loved ones, whether they be immediate family or not, is such a valuable thing; and for anyone with children, it is the best gift that can be given. Those who observe Christmas, either as a religious or secular celebration, and those who don’t, and everyone our view of all faiths or none can certainly use the fact that school is Give the gift closed and statutory holidays of time during are taking place to spread some cheer and just plain have some the holidays fun with those who are closest to them. For many, that will mean family gatherings over the next few days, while for others it’s the chance to hit the Boxing Day sales or spend an afternoon or evening at the movies. In Toronto, there’s never a shortage of activities to take part in over the holidays and most of them are very family friendly. And there’s also no need to spend a lot of money to enjoy yourself with family and friends over the next few days. Lots of events, such as skating at one of the city’s many rinks, are free of charge and a great way to enjoy the season – though this year’s warm and wet weather is taking a bit of an edge off traditional winter activities such as tobogganing and skiing. The milder temperatures, though, open the door to other outdoor activities such as a walk through one of Toronto’s many parks, ravines or along the waterfront. Also, a visit to the zoo or a petting farm is always a fun family activity at this time of year. On Boxing Day, the Toronto Zoo hosts its annual Treats Walk for the animals. If you’re looking to find some other fun activities in Toronto over the holidays, you can visit us online at www.insidetoronto.com and click on our events calendar.

Tory succeeds in restoring professionalism to Toronto It’s unlikely that 2015 could have been anything other than what was at Toronto City Hall: a lengthy period of detoxification from the awful years leading up to it. At the beginning of the year that was, Mayor John Tory and Toronto council may have had a lot of very practical tasks ahead of them, but the one that mattered for most of us was maybe the simplest: to restore a sense of professionalism, consideration and, dare we say it, sobriety, to the business of municipal public life. Those of us whose job it was to report on this place heard it again and again, at parties where a year earlier conversation would shift around to questions about the fascinatingly terrible circus that was the Rob Ford administration. In 2015, all anyone wanted to hear was that the new mayor was as dull, wellmannered and moderate as he appeared on television. It was a low bar, and with

david nickle the city a few notable exceptions, Tory and Toronto council were able to meet and exceed it. There was some trouble at the Licensing and Standards Committee, where newcomer Councillor Jim Karygiannis and veteran trouble-maker Giorgio Mammoliti raised a ruckus about the taxi industry. But generally, city hall business proceeded with shaky caution. There was a bit more trouble with the 2015 budget, when Tory learned that a good relationship with Premier Kathleen Wynne didn’t mean as much as he’d hoped, and city finance staff scrambled to balance the budget in the face of an unexpected download of social housing costs. But it all worked out, at least for now. There were few serious

battles at council. The Gardiner Expressway’s future was one of those. The question of whether to tear it down in the east or build a new elevated highway was debated, and the mayor – who wanted that new highway – prevailed narrowly. After, he sat down with opponents to see what could be done to mollify them. It’s ended if not happily, then at least peaceably. There might have been more trouble had Tory decided to get behind a bid for the Olympics, in the wake of a stint at hosting the Pan Am Games. Previous mayors might have been tempted by the promise of Olympic gold, and we could tell Tory was thinking about it. But in the end, the steady hand prevailed and we let the bid go. There was enough sensible and mundane work to be done already, without that distracting excitement. There might’ve been some fun fighting over the prospects of jets at Billy

Bishop Airport, but that was shut down by the new federal government, who made it clear they had no interest in opening the tripartite agreement on the waterfront, and that a longsimmering debate about jets was now over. There were few tears shed at our post-traumatic city hall. By the end of this so very peaceful year, everyone was relaxed enough that Tory could drop what otherwise would have been a bomb, and announce he was going to ask council to add a property tax levy for infrastructure. It landed with barely a muffled thud. Maybe we were all just too distracted, watching Donald Trump climb in the polls to the south of us – and understanding, maybe like nobody else, just how that sort of thing can turn out. 2016 the final year of the Metropass Presto on track for full system Next year will mark the final full year the TTC will sell its monthly Metropasses as the transit commission prepares to switch its fare system to the Presto card. To commemorate this milestone, the TTC will sell special passes all through next year, each of which promises to be adorned with an iconic city image. What’s more, all 12 monthly passes can be combined to form one unified image. The Metropass debuted in 1980 and cost $26 for one month. Now it’s $141.50 – by far the most expensive travel pass of its kind in North America.

Also during the closure, construction is scheduled for the eastbound platform at GO Exhibition station. The Exhibition loop will re-open as of August. RIDES ON THE TTC on new year’s eve wFREE

New Year’s Eve is around the corner and free transit rides are in the offing. From 7 p.m. Dec. 31 until 7 a.m. New Year’s Day, the TTC will be completely free to use. Most routes, including the subway, will have extended hours until almost 4 a.m. You can also park for free at any TTC lot after 3 p.m. Corby Spirit and Wine, which is sponsoring the

Programming note: This is the final TOinTransit column of 2015. I’m taking a couple of weeks off for a long-awaited vacation, which means the column is on hiatus until I return. Of course, keep on visiting www.insidetoronto. com for the latest transit developments. On behalf of everyone at Metroland Media Toronto, have a safe and happy holiday. TOinTransit will return the week of Jan. 11. Until then.

integration by end of 2016: TTC JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com With Presto devices already installed on more than 100 streetcars and more on the way, the TTC is on track to have the electronic readers on all its streetcars by the end of the calendar year. At an announcement at Bathurst subway station last Thursday, TTC chair Josh Colle, TTC CEO Andy Byford, Metrolinx president and CEO Bruce McCuaig, provincial Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca and Spadina-Fort York MP Adam Vaughan noted the rollout, which will modernize and integrate fare payment across Toronto transit systems, is moving ahead smoothly. The readers, which will allow riders to enter subways and subway stations with the tap of a card, are already in place at 26 subway stations, with the remaining stations

also expected to be outfitted by the end of 2016. Newer streetcar models are all equipped with the devices, and more and more of the “legacy” fleet of older vehicles are getting readers each day. streamline for riders Colle noted the new system will streamline matters for the TTC and for riders alike. “We’re undergoing a dramatic shift in all of our fare policies and how people actually pay,” he said. “If you imagine right now... we collect cash, we store it, we transport it, we have to secure it.” “It’s an inefficient way for us to operate and at the same time far less convenient for our customers, so we think it’s a significant saving across the board.” He added the system would make the transit system far

more user friendly, allowing passengers to move easily between TTC and GO systems. The move could come with a shift in pricing policies – already the TTC has proposed eliminating student and senior discounts and charging more for riders travelling during rush hours. Colle said a peak pricing policy to “try and get some people out of those busy rush hour times onto buses and subways and streetcars are less crowded” could be in the works, following recommendations from staff. The Presto system will be deployed on buses and WheelTrans vehicles throughout 2016, which would facilitate different payment schemes, including increased peak fares and a system in which riders could be charged based on how far they travel on the system, both of which have been discussed.

CONSUMER FEATURE

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

• LOWER PRICES • LOWER PAYMENTS • 5 YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

BOXING DAY BLOWOUT

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

IT WAS THE YEAR OF PAN AM FEVER AND A MOM’S WALK FOR HER SON

oronto had been gripped by Pan Am fever for weeks. I’d beaten the traffic that would later snarl around High Park that blisteringly hot early Saturday afternoon in July to report on the Pan Am women’s road race cycling event. I’d trekked past metal barricades, Pan Am officials in orange vests and uniformed police officers to enter High Park, opting to scale steep Colborne Lodge Drive to locate the cycling route. The steeper it got, the hotter it seemed. Strangely, there were no crowds. But it was still early. I sought shade on a park bench and waited. Hearing voices, I wandered over to barricades set up at a turn on the cycle track. Finally, spectators. I needed to talk with some for my story. Editors had advised reporters not strictly to write Pan Am sports coverage. But to report on spectators’ views and excitement, community stories that reflected the atmosphere or “colour” as we call it in the business. I spoke with a woman seated with her daughter under some tall pines. She sent me to talk with her husband, George, and their daughter, the reigning under-13 Ontario road race champion Katrina Pawley Mason, 12. The family had trekked in from Windsor, Ont. to watch the race. An Ontario road race champion? I couldn’t believe my luck. Katrina and her dad’s excitement was palpable, and contagious. But I also needed some local folks. I found them at the barricades. The gathered crowd erupted in cheers, rang cowbells, waved Canadian flags and yelled, “Let’s go, Canada!” as the racers scaled the hill, then again when they looped down another turn. Canadian pride was on full display. But what struck me most was Canadian character. When Bermuda’s Zoenique Williams fell behind the pack on the first circuit, and later dropped out of the race, the crowds cheered her on as exuberantly as they had the Canadians, who eventually took the gold and bronze. MOM WALKS TO OTTAWA As a reporter, I’ve connected with people on the worst days of their lives. It’s an honour to hold space with strangers who trust you with their pain. It’s also a privilege to bear witness to people soaring to great heights to effect change. That’s how I felt last January when I spoke with Dee Gordon. The Etobicoke mother of three endured plummeting winter temperatures, howling winds, blisters and illness as she trekked 500 kilometres on her Walk to Ottawa. She urged the then prime minister Stephen Harper Conservative government to enact a national strategy to fund autism treatment. Gordon, 51, spoke to thousands of Canadians at eight stops along the way. Her son, Jacob, 15, has autism. He has socialization and sensory issues, but also a high IQ and is “verbally gifted,” his mom said.

Autism Ontario describes Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as a lifelong neurological condition that affects the way a person communicates and relates to people and to the world around them. It can affect behaviour, social interactions and a person’s ability to verbally communicate. Like many Canadian families, Gordon’s had exhausted services and educational placements for Jacob. I talked with her on the eve of her grueling, two-week call to change. She spoke with enthusiasm, openness and heart. She shared a story of watching her teenage son ice fish on her daughter Krystal’s lakefront Sudbury home during Christmas 2013. Jacob was close, but so very far emotionally. She dug a path in the snow to reach him. “The closer I got to Jacob, the more I felt I was approaching this loneliness, although he was very happy. Socially, he finds it hard,” she said.

Gordon would speak for her son, and for all Canadian children and young adults with ASD. In fact, she carried and rang bells on her walk to represent children with autism “who have no voice.” Her online petition at www.walktoottawa.org urges the Canadian government to create a Pan-Canadian Strategy for ASD that echoes the recommendations of the 2007 Senate report, Pay Now or Pay Later: Autism Families in Crisis. Thousands of Canadians signed it. It remains open for another year. Recently, Gordon learned the new Speaker of the House in Ottawa will accept a digital version of her petition in Parliament. “It seemed like our story was not just about ASD. It became a historical walk for change,” she told me Dec. 16 when we reconnected. “I believe I became a very different person. I had so many dreams that I shared only on scraps of paper before my walk. Today I stand up

and talk about it. I talk about many things and help many people on the way.” Powerful. Gordon’s dreams continue. She wants a new educational system to help families of children newly diagnosed with ASD, and to help adult children with life skills, employment and respite for their families. She has applied for registered charitable status for her non-profit organization. Her goal for 2016 — “to meet as many families as possible affected by autism,” she said. So she and Jacob will hop on a motorcycle next year on their Ride to Ottawa. Visit www.ridetoottawa. org for more information. “Children should have better stories to tell,” Gordon said. “We hope to fill my son Jacob’s heart with dreams on the road next year.” Read story here: bit.ly/1PbwVuo

Canlan Ice Sports recognizes long-time food drive contributers For nearly a decade, Canlan Ice Sports has held a holiday food drive to collect donations for the underprivileged. For just as long, the 6 a.m. pick-up hockey group has been leading the way in food donations. Every December 1st Canlan Ice Sports, located at 1120 Martin Grove Rd., puts up a freshly painted net in the lobby and asks theirs customers to think of those less fortunate than themselves during the holiday season. They call it the “Fill the Net” food drive. “The Fill The Net Food Drive’ is part of the many things we do as part of our Social Responsibility to the local community,” says Dan D’Alvise, district manager of the GTA Region at Canlan Ice Sports. “On December 5th we participated in the 25th Santa Claus Parade along the Lake Shore in addition to supporting charitable causes throughout the year.” “We believe in building and nurturing community relationships. Not only do we want to be recognized for our contribution to the hockey community, we strive to be a part of all aspects of our community,” D’Alvise says. “On Christmas Eve, I gather the food and

take it all down to the Daily Bread Food Bank in south Etobicoke. Last year we contributed 959 lbs. of food, the second highest we have done in the 12 years we have had the program. Each year we strive to be better than the year before.” “Every year, Jim Walsh and his people are always front and centre,” says D’Alvise. The group has been playing pick-up hockey at Canlan Ice Sports since 1996 and have been contributing to the food drive in huge numbers (on average 10 “fair size” boxes) since its inception. The pick-up hockey group, a selfdescribed “good bunch of guys” who range from teens to men in their 60s, plays from 6:15 a.m. until 7:30, twice weekly. “We do it in the morning so we don’t interrupt time with our families,” says Walsh. “Anybody who’s come has been top shelf people.” “Jim is the one who spearheads the teams’ efforts to contribute every year,” D’Alvise says. “He’s got a heart of gold and tremendous passion to give to those who are less fortunate.” From the last week in November, until their last game before Christmas,

Photo by Chico/cschelphoto Members of the 6 a.m. hockey group. Left to right: John Arlia, Shawn Pereira, Ron O’Brien, Jordan Pouw and Jim Walsh.

Walsh encourages the group to donate – both on and off the ice. “I’m in sales, I’m very people orientated, and able to motivate people,“ Walsh says. “I help them realize that helping others at this time of year will make them feel good.” Whether the men on the team go out to the store to pick up food items,

or just do a quick sweep of the kitchen cupboards doesn’t matter. Walsh says what might not seem like a large contribution, is a big deal to the people who receive it. “I’m fortunate enough to have a great family of love and all the food I can eat. We have leftovers every night.

I can’t imagine what it’s like as a child or an adult, going to bed without something to eat,” says Walsh. Every little bit adds up, and with the enormous support from the members of the 6 a.m. hockey group, Canlan Ice Sports is hoping to have collected a total of 1000 lbs. of food this year.

Lanor students take load off Santa Michelle Ross’s Grade 2/3 class at Lanor Junior Middle School spent a “magical” morning at Toys R Us last Thursday learning about the spirit of giving. Last week, Ross said her students held a “smashing success” of a bake sale – selling out of their sweet treats in just 45 minutes and raising $360 for the CHUM Christmas Wish. After sifting through Toys

R Us flyers to look for deals to ensure they got “the biggest bang for the buck”, the students walked over to the toy store’s nearby Sherway Gardens location on Thursday morning. The class divided into four groups, then set about selecting $90 worth of toys per group to donate to the CHUM toy drive, one of the largest distributors of toys to children in need in the

Greater Toronto Area. “Toys R Us was very gracious and gave us eight free board games, the lowest recent prices, and gift bags,” Ross said, noting that students were able to personally load their donated toys into the CHUM Christmas Wish truck, which met them at Toys R Us. “It was truly a magical experience teaching students about the true spirit of giving.”

Erica Voss joins national ringette team at World Championships CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke native Erica Voss will be spending her holidays on the ice in Helsinki , Finland, this year. The 19-year-old University of Toronto mechanical engineering student was recently selected to play defence for Canada’s Junior National Ringette team, which is set to compete in the Finnish capital during the 2016 World Ringette Championships over the holidays. “It’ll be exciting to see the whole team together in our jerseys with the Maple Leaf on the front,” Voss said of what she’s most looking forward to with the Dec. 27 to Jan. 4 tournament – the largest competition of her ringette career thus far. “Also, to be on the ice as Team Canada with the anthem playing and all that – that’s the most exciting part for me.” Voss, who grew up in The Kingsway and now lives in

the High Park area, started playing “the fastest game on ice” with Etobicoke Ringette at age six. “I got into it shortly after my sister started playing... She’s my older sister, and of course I had to do everything she did,” Voss laughed, recalling her early ringette years. ‘fell in love with it’ “As soon as I started playing, I liked it so much and I liked the speed so much. My sister played it all the way ’til her second year of university, so watching her play at a high level made me want to get there, too. So I just kept going with it and fell in love with it – and now here I am today.” Likening ringette to a cross between hockey, basketball and lacrosse, Voss said the sport’s 30-second shot clock and no-contact rule make it more fluid of a game – not to mention “so much faster and so much more exciting” than Canada’s national pastime. “It looks similar to hockey,

because it’s on the ice and the equipment is similar – aside from the fact that there’s no blade on the stick and we use a ring instead of a puck,” she explained. “But the ‘fastest game on ice’ thing mainly comes from the fact that, similar to basketball, there’s a 30-second shot clock. So every time the ring changes possession, the shot clock resets and you’ve got just 30 seconds to take a shot.” While Voss played with Etobicoke Ringette until she turned 13, she switched over to Mississauga Ringette when she started playing AA competitive ringette. She now plays for Richmond Hill in the National Ringette League. It was while playing for Team Ontario in the 2015 Canada Winter Games last February, however, that Voss caught the eye of coaches and scouts from the Junior National Team. A week after the Games, Voss was one of 35 athletes invited to attend a tryout

camp in May – shortly after which she was informed that she’d made the team. Three training camps later, Voss said she and her new teammates are now scheduled to fly out Dec. 23 to Finland where the 2016 World Ringette Championships’ Presidents’ Pool competition – featuring Team Sweden, Team USA, Team Slovakia, Team Czech Republic and the junior national teams from Canada, Finland and Sweden – will begin round-robin action Dec. 27. “It’s hard to describe (how I feel),” she said of her experience as a member of the junior national team. “Growing up, I went to a lot of ringette camps, and at those camps my instructors were all national team players. So to now be on a national team myself, it kind of feels like I’m becoming one of those players that I looked up to for so long.”
