Richview grad to star in horror series The Strain Drew Nelson up against new breed of vampires in Guillermo del Toro’s latest offering CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke actor Drew Nelson can’t say if the character he plays on The Strain, FX’s highly anticipated new summer horror series, will survive the first season’s outbreak of vampirism – he’s been sworn to secrecy on his undead status. But what the 34-year-old Richview Collegiate grad will say is that working with famed Mexican director Guillermo del Toro on the vampire show has been “a dream come true.” “As cheesy as that sounds, it’s true. Back in the day when I saw Pan’s Labyrinth, I was completely in awe of that work – that a fantasy film could be as dark as it was. I just think Guillermo’s a genius, and to work with him, I mean, he’s so incredible,” Nelson said. “He knows this world he’s created inside and out so incredibly well, down every minute detail, so it’s easy to give yourself over to him and put all your trust in him as an actor.” The Strain, in fact, is based on the bestselling trilogy of novels del Toro himself co-wrote with author Chuck Hogan, telling the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (played by Corey Stoll of House of Cards fame), head of the Centre for Disease Control’s Canary Team in New York

When an “ancient and evil” strain of vampirism breaks out in the city, Goodweather and this team are called in to investigate – and as the outbreak goes viral, he ends up waged in war as the “fate of humanity itself” hangs in the balance. All the while battling blood-thirsty vampires, Goodweather’s troubles are compounded on the homefront by Nelson’s character, Matt Sayles

– the new live-in boyfriend of his estranged wife, Kelly. “I’m the new guy, so obviously Eph isn’t a huge fan of mine because I’m this guy literally moving into his home, living with his wife, and becoming an emerging father figure to their son Zach, so there’s a lot going on,” Nelson laughed. “I have a lot of amazing scenes with Natalie Brown, who plays Kelly, and some really great rivalry scenes with Corey Stoll, who’s an amazing, incredible actor.” That Nelson was surrounded by such acting talent on the Toronto set of The Strain came as little surprise, he said, as del Toro is famous for being fastidious in his casting decisions – which, he added, made it all the more flattering to be chosen for the recurring role. “I was told he is very meticulous in who he chooses to be a part of his world, that he’s very particular of who he wants in terms of casting, which makes me that much more grateful to be a part of The Strain,” he said. Also inspiring to Nelson is the fact that del Toro, who was fascinated by vampires as a child – often sketching them and writing stories about them – is now getting the chance to play out those childhood fantasies on such a large scale with The Strain. As for Nelson, his own dream

Thistletown Collegiate’s Ormea Chea brought home gold from the 20th annual Skills Canada National Competition last month. The competition features students from high schools and colleges across the country competing in

more than 60 skilled trade competitions from auto collision repair to culinary arts and robotics to webdesign. A culinary student at Thistletown, Chea won the gold in the Job Skill Demonstration competition by exhibiting mastery of the Culinary Arts, while also demonstrating various techniques of the trade and teaching the audience an entertain-

ing, well thought-out lesson. “The competition really highlighted Ormea’s great ability to share her incredible skills and talent in a 30-minute cooking-show style,” said Thistletown instructor Keith Hoare. “To be crowned the best in the country is a big honour for Ormea; she was very proud to represent Ontario and her school.”

World Cup leaves legacy in Toronto

T

he World Cup of Soccer ends this weekend with the championship and third-place matches. And while the 2014 version has already provided plenty of heart-stopping action for soccer fans, let’s hope that this event has planted the seeds for a lasting legacy in Toronto’s communities. The event may have been hosted in Brazil, but the World Cup has a significant impact in a city as diverse as Toronto (where nearly half the residents speak a language at home other than English). The World Cup is a true spectacle, and not just for fans of the two remaining teams vying for the championship on Sunday. Whether it’s been by meeting new people out to watch a game at a local establishment, or having the opportunity to learn more about another country and its culture, Torontonians are witnessing a unique opportunity for comour view munity building. Events that enable citizens from diverse backgrounds to Community gather together often help building a forge deep lasting connections. And that’s not all. Sports by-product of events like these inspire stars sporting events of the next generation. In that, the World Cup is no different than the Stanley Cup final or the World Series. And there’s definitely value to a community in a less competitive vein – the benefits of regular physical activity for our youth: soccer can be an outlet for that. And compared to other sports, soccer is relatively affordable. We’ve recently profiled a number of local soccer organizations in the city that aim to benefit from the exposure the World Cup has brought. Visit our website at www.insidetoronto.com/worldcupTO to see those stories and all other coverage we’ve compiled on the World Cup and the 32 teams participating. One final note: Those of us still craving international sporting competition after watching the World Cup don’t have long to wait and have the opportunity to experience the competition live. The FIFA Under-20 women’s soccer championships are being hosted in Canada later this summer, Aug. 5 to 24. A number of games will be in Toronto at BMO Field (Montreal, Moncton and Edmonton are also hosting games). Two of Canada’s three games in the tournament’s group stage (against Finland and Ghana) are here in Toronto.

Can we expect dirty deeds to pepper the rest of the mayoral campaign?

I

s it going to get dirty, this mayoral campaign? That’s what Doug Ford suggested Tuesday, as he told reporters he believed that a rival political campaign might be responsible for smashing a window in his SUV outside his Etobicoke home the previous night. That morning, a group of bare-chested protesters made a show of themselves behind Doug’s brother, Mayor Rob Ford, as he gamely bulldozed through a speech highlighting possible traffic woes. This Passion of the Fords’ narrative was upended somewhat when CityTV uploaded video showing a police officer chiding Mayor Ford’s sobriety coach, for apparently kicking one of the protesters. That protester, a 52-yearold Scarborough housing consultant with the name of John Furr, confirmed in an interview that he had indeed been kicked, and

david nickle the city added that he was surprised when a police officer said that it was Ford’s coach who’d done the alleged deed. Furr said that from the force of the kick, it felt more like “a two-year-old.” No charges were laid in the incident. Furr has also made clear that he is not a part of a mayoral campaign. The jury is still out on Doug Ford’s speculative allegation that someone associated with the election smashed his car window in the middle of the night. But Doug Ford is correct in saying that things are getting if not dirty, then extremely ugly following Rob Ford’s return. Rob Ford’s half-hearted attempt at a mea-culpa fell flat – at least so far as the

polls are concerned. The mayor still has supporters – he was given a hero’s welcome at the Caribbean Festival launch on Tuesday, and on Monday was cheered on by an entourage of T-shirt-wearing supporters – his detractors seem to have both multiplied and intensified. They have moved from fascinated disapproval to inchoate rage over the time of his absence. East York school teacher Joe Killoran, who offered Mayor Ford a blistering, bare-chested rebuke as he joined a Canada Day parade, has become a poster boy for this nouveau fury. Tommy Lenathen, a longtime city employee from Scarborough, is the equivalent to Doug Ford, as he came to city hall to excoriate the Ward 2 councillor for his remarks in The Etobicoke Guardian about autistic children. It may, one supposes, emerge that these two and

also the crowd of anti-Ford protesters who’ve been sitting vigil outside the mayor’s office are political operatives for one campaign or another. It is more likely, however, that the people who are shouting over the mayor’s speeches and calling his brother a bigot are responding with genuine anger – at the racism, sexism, homophobia and lewdness that the mayor has expressed – that is not so much motivated as it is provoked. Have they crossed a line, these protesters, in doing so? Of course they have. As we trudge through the waning of Rob Ford’s 20102014 term of office, that line is so far behind us that we wouldn’t recognize it if we saw it. David Nickle is The Guardian’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Find him on Twitter: @ DavidNickle

Wait and see if Ford changes his behaviour To the editor: Re: ‘Ford wrong to play favourites with media,’ Editorial, July 3. While you were quite correct in reporting that “Ford wrong to play favourites with media” as you tried to respond to Metroland Media Toronto’s exclusion from Mayor Rob Ford’s first press conference since his return from rehab, I think it is really prudent for all of us to temper our expectations about a hopeful change in the mayor’s behaviour. The mayor has always been a divisive politician and I suspect that has absolutely nothing to do with his substance abuse problem. And when we have heard the mayor’s mother has been quoted as saying the only problem her son had was that he needed to lose a little weight and we’ve seen his brother, Doug Ford, steadfastly support and be complicit in his brother’s behaviour, we need to remember that addiction is a family disease. The mayor will have to fight to continue to be out of denial for his

substance abuse issues and for that he will need his family and friends to do likewise. But denial has many layers and when he used the word “disease” 25 times in his 17-minute speech, to excuse his behaviour, we can be forgiven for thinking that a clean and sober Ford may very well remain a divisive; sexist; racist and homophobic man, who has a penchant for associating with criminals and lying about his accomplishments. The mayor also has a problem with authority figures, whether it is city council, the ombudsman, the police or the media, that rightfully deserves answers to tough questions about his policies and his conduct. Maybe some of this can be laid at the feet of behaviour associated with substance abuse, but after only two months of rehab, we can only “wait and see”. Meanwhile he should not be running for office at this time again. Torontonians need a stable candidate. Myrna Markovich

Nothing ‘family-friendly’ about film shown at Yellow Brick Road festival, says reader To the editor: It is with sadness and disappointment that I am writing this letter. On June 26, I took my wife and two adolescent children on an “adventure” in the community we have resided in since our childhood. Not only do we reside in Long Branch, we have been property owners since 1993. We decided to take the adventure down the Yellow Brick Road after reading about it in your newspaper. The week before last, you highlighted on the front page a “family friendly” event in our community which was planned and endorsed by our local library, BIA, LAMP, and many other organizations. Your paper promoted this event on the front page as well as on another full page in the paper. Your intention was to increase the awareness in our community of the upcoming World Pride celebrations which were taking place in the downtown core. Our adventure began in the Long Branch library but didn’t

last long. We went to have a look at the movies which were highlighted on the Dorothystour.com website as being geared to education and youth. Upon hearing vulgar words used in reference to a male’s sexual anatomy, witnessing footage of naked men massaging naked men, and hearing how one man’s goal was to teach other men how to sexually arouse one another, we quickly escorted our daughters out of the dark room. film inappropriate The message being shared in the movie, Out Late was how “perfectly normal” it is for people over the age of 60 to “come out” and it offered the viewer an insight into the details of how this happens. Do you think this is appropriate to be showing at our local library? Do you think promoting this type of vulgar, pornographic trash is edifying to our youth and families? When my wife spoke with the branch manager, he challenged

her on her interpretation of pornography. A c c o r d i n g t o We b s t e r ’s Dictionary, pornography is defined as ... “movies, pictures, magazines... that show or describe naked people or sex in a very open and direct way in order to cause sexual excitement” This movie was unquestionably pornographic in nature and should not have been shown in our public library system, not to mention to youth or adolescents. This is offensive. It causes us to question what the motives were. It concerns us that you as editor would see fit to endorse an event which contains such blatant perversion and vulgarity to families and youth in our neighbourhood. We will be addressing this with our councillor, the library system, and perhaps other media. We do not want our tax dollars used to corrupt the youth of our community. We need to protect our youth and children today. Carmine and Carolyn Cacciacarro

Give 30 charity expands Ramadan campaign to feed the hungry nationally

Etobicoke-based fundraiser gets support from athletes, TV stars to help fill lean food bank shelves TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com CFL star Ibrahim “Obby” Khan is helping grow Etobicoke-based charity Give 30 nationally. The Muslim football free agent, who most recently played for the Calgary Stampeders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, is a Winnipeg, Man. ambassador of the annual fundraiser held during Ramadan to fight hunger. “Canada is blessed with so many gifts and I am saddened to see hungry children in communities across our country. It’s not right. It should not be,” Khan said in a statement on Give 30’s website. “That’s why I am proud to join Give 30 to fight hunger across Canada, and right here in my amazing hometown of Winnipeg.” Khan is hosting a $25 Fast and Furious Feast at his Winnipeg-based restaurant chain Shawarma Khan July 11. All proceeds go to Give 30. This year’s Give 30 campaign kicked off June 26 to coincide with the month-long observation fasting. Donations may be made to participating food banks through www.give30.ca until Sept. 5. To date, Give 30’s 2014 campaign has raised $30,000. During Ramadan, one billion Muslims globally abstain from eating and drinking from dawn until sunset. During Ramadan, hunger is intended to focus the faithful’s thoughts on God, charity and empathy for others. Ziyaad Mia, a practising Muslim, lifelong Long Branch resident and downtown Toronto lawyer, founded Give 30 in 2012 when he contemplated the cost savings of Ramadan. across Quebec will all benefit from this summer’s campaign. Give 30 donations come at a critical time for food banks, said Leslie Venturino, North York Harvest’s development associate. “It’s very important in the summer months when donations are slower,” Venturino said, noting the north Toronto food bank encompasses six city-identified priority neighbourhoods. “Hunger still exists in the summer months. Forty per cent of our clients are families with children. Meal programs and snack programs through school end in summer, and few camps offer it.” Daily Bread makes more than one million food bank visits in the GTA each year. One-third of food bank clients are children, Daily Bread has reported. Give 30 not only provides critically needed funds to stock sparse food bank shelves during summer months, it ignites activism in the fight against hunger, said Gail Nyberg, Daily Bread Food Bank executive director. “Community initiatives like Give 30 are important because they help to not only raise awareness in the community that hunger is a problem, but also mobilize people in the fight against hunger. Hunger doesn’t take a holiday — it’s a problem thousands of people across Toronto struggle with every day.” Nyberg said in a statement. Zaib Shaikh, Canadian producer, director and actor known for Little Mosque on the Prairie, is also a Give 30 ambassador. “Ramadan is a tradition and month when we must give time, resources and of ourselves for the betterment of our families, neighbours and communities regardless of colour, creed or religion. Give 30 is an example of neighbour helping neighbour and our communities and cities being better for it. Let’s all give to and support Give 30,” Shaikh said in a statement. Give 30 is a movement that is growing exponentially through the power of media and social media. “We have great teams in Winnipeg, Edmonton and Ottawa. People there asked for it. They took it and ran with it,” said Mia.

>>>from page 1 ing to partner with some other groups in the area. But the actual work on the rehabilitation, we hope to start in 2015.” Originally built by the Grand Trunk Railway in 1916 near what is now Royal York Road (then Church Street), Mimico Station ceased being used as a passenger terminal by the Canadian National Railway (CN) by the late 1960s. While it remained in use for years after that as a sleeping quarters for railway workers, it soon fell into disuse and disrepair, and was abandoned by CN in 1989, then sold in 2001. McHale said the first members of what is now called the MSCO began to come together shortly after that sale – when the station’s new owners applied for a demolition permit. “It’s been about 10 years now since the building was threatened with demolition by the owner. It was sitting in its original location next to the rail tracks near the current Mimico GO station when the railway sold it to another company that wanted to expand their industrial site,” he explained. “The building was kind of in their way, so they wanted to demolish it.” By 2004, the MSCO was officially formed with a mandate to save Mimico Station

from demolition and return it to its original beauty: “We want to ensure it not only remains an important part of Etobicoke’s heritage, but also serves as a place to which the community has access,” reads the MSCO mission statement. “We are also committed to establishing a long-term plan for sustainability that will make the Station an exciting, vibrant and wellvisited destination in south Etobicoke.” The first of those goals was quickly accomplished – with co-operation from its new owners who agreed to hold off demolition – with the station’s first move to a new, temporary holding location in 2005. It was then moved again in 2007 to 8 Judson St. in Coronation Park, where a foundation was poured for its permanent relocation, and where the building is currently being used by a condo developer as a sales pavilion. Over the years, McHale said much work has been done to restore Mimico Station’s exterior – work which, according to the MSCO website, includes: the rebuilding of the addition, ticket booth and a new roof in 2008; new stucco, wainscoting, shingling and priming in 2009; and new doors, windows, exterior trim and a water connection in

2010, among other improvements. “Just recently, we were also able to find a local sign maker who made four reproductions of the identification sign boards that used to be on the building way back when, based on pictures of the originals,” McHale said, noting that while the signs have not yet been installed, he’s hoping to get them up as soon as possible. When restoration work on the interior portion of the building is complete, the plan is to open Mimico Station as a “community and educational resource.” To those ends, McHale said the station will in the future house: a local history museum, covering Mimico, New Toronto and Long Branch; an operators bay to showcase railway operations as an important part of local history; a multi-purpose community room containing an art gallery, and which could be rented for special events and used by community groups for meetings; and an archive to store materials to help with researching local history. “So, there’s lots of different ideas there – and it may not all happen at once – but that’s our goal,” he said. Over the course of the afternoon, councillors heard from a range of candidates – including former Scarborough Southwest Councillor Adrian Heaps, and Kinga Surma, a former staff-member of Milczyn’s, as well as Agnes Potts, who Milczyn hinted he might favour. Potts was the only serious challenger to Maloney, in the end receiving just 15 votes to Maloney’s 24 votes. Surma received the initial support of both Rob and Doug Ford, and following the vote registered to run in the Ward 5 election this fall. Coming up on his 50th birthday, Maloney said the short duration of the appointment made it a perfect opportunity to give back to the community. “This is a unique opportunity – this was a four-month window and I thought I could come in and do the job,” he said. Among the campaigns Maloney has worked on, is Ward 6 (Etobicoke-Lakeshore) Councillor Mark Grimes’, who supported his appointment. Grimes said Maloney should be able to represent the northern half of EtobicokeLakeshore well. “He’s been around the block and back. He knows the ground he walks on,” said Grimes. “The two wards go hand in hand.”

Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job.

What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis.

Early bus service on Dundas cost 15 cents per trip M any Torontonians today feel some level of dissatisfaction with their transit service, but there’s little doubt that our service would seem extraordinarily good to people living along Dundas Street West in Etobicoke in 1920. The Toronto Suburban Railway had opened an electric rail line in 1917 from Keele Street, across Etobicoke, and beyond, but they only offered four trains daily. When J. Russell Fife launched his Islington Bus Services Sept. 7, 1921, residents along Dundas were delighted. Initially he offered a “jitney service” between Keele Street and Cordova Avenue using the small bus you see in the centre of the above photo. The bus made 12 complete round-trips daily, excluding Sundays. Passengers simply flagged down the driver when they wanted on or off. The fare was 15 cents. Vernon Bell of Islington was one of its

drivers and may have been a partner. Russell’s brother, Melvyn, was also involved in the business. By 1924, this bus service had been extended west to Six Points, and the business had acquired the two large Gotfredson buses shown here. This allowed them to increase service, but municipal pressure led them to lower the fare to 10 cents. In June 1927, Islington Bus Services announced it was shutting down its bus line temporarily, citing the deplorable condition of Dundas Street as the reason, but also asking the municipalities to add a bonus to their fares as was done for the TTC in some locations. This did, however, prove to be the end of Islington Bus Services. The society page of the Toronto Star on April 18, 1928 reported that Russell and his

mother had just returned to Canada from a seven-month visit to California. Russell’s poor health may have been the reason for their extended trip as he died of “myocardial degeneration” on Nov. 26, 1932 in Strathroy, ON, (his birthplace) at the young age of 34.

The demise of Islington Bus Services led to a battle among residents, the TTC and municipal governments on who should provide bus service along Dundas Street West. By 1928, a private company named Maple Leaf Coach Lines was operating

a half-hourly bus service from Keele to Six Points. Another year later, this company was purchased by the TTC and then transferred to their Gray Coach Lines division – a suburban bus operator. When Metropolitan Toronto was formed on Jan. 1, 1954, the Gray Coaches on

Dundas Street and other suburban routes were replaced by “red” city buses.

DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Scarborough parent Tommy Lenathen is taking his complaint about City Councillor Doug Ford’s statements about autistic children to the next level, after the Etobicoke North Councillor was quoted as suggesting he “go to hell” in a Toronto newspaper. Lenathen, a city employee, launched an informal complaint with the city’s Integrity Commissioner following Ford’s remarks in May about the Griffin Centre residential group home in Etobicoke. Ford spoke at a community meeting then – covered by The Etobicoke Guardian – and suggested that the autistic youth who lived in the house under supervision were lowering property values and were making neighbours feel unsafe.

Lenathen is the father of a 26-year-old autistic man, and he said he took offense to Ford’s remarks. He has asked through the Integrity Commissioner that Ford take sensitivity training, apologize to the staff at the Griffin Centre and resign. He said that he was motivated to make the complaint after reading about the issue in The Scarborough Mirror. “When I read... the column in the Scarborough Mirror I got really p---ed off,” he said. “When I went home and looked at Thomas... I had to do something. For Doug

Tommy Lenathen, a Scarborough resident and father of an autistic son, is lodging a formal complaint against Doug Ford for comments he made relating to the Griffin Centre in Etobicoke and its autistic residents.

Ford to go into that house two months after it opened, berate the staff... He offered to buy the house to get rid of them. He picks on four autistic kids.” Ford’s response The complaint about Ford was delivered informally to Ford’s office by Leiper, and he was given until July 14 to respond. However, in the Toronto Sun he was quoted as suggesting he didn’t care and Lenathen could “go to hell.” Lenathen wants to proceed with a formal complaint, which would engage the Integrity Commissioner in a possible investigation. “Him and his brother do not give a damn about rules and regulations,” Lenathen said. “I’m a private citizen. I have a right to file a complaint. He’s telling every family with an autistic kid, the whole process here about

the complaint... go to hell. He does what he wants and says what he wants.” Lenathen pointed out that Ford has not been vocal about the house on Windsor Road in Etobicoke alleged to be a crack house, where his brother Mayor Rob Ford spent time. “My son doesn’t go out and pee in the park like his brother,” said Lenathen, referring to police surveillance of Mayor Ford doing just that. “He doesn’t know what he’s talking about when it comes to autistic kids. He doesn’t have a clue.” Lenathen is a member of CUPE Local 416 and a former union president from prior to amalgamation. He maintained that his union affiliations have nothing to do with the complaint that he’s lodged. Have an opinion on this story? Share it with us in a letter to the editor at etg@ insidetoronto.com

City’s bike lane network grows With the addition of Simcoe Street, the City of Toronto’s bike lane network grew a little larger this week. Painted bike lanes are now available on both sides of the street between Queen Street West and Front Street. They’ll also intersect with planned bike lanes on both Richmond Street and Adelaide Street, planned for later this summer. The lanes, which are not separated from the rest of the street, went into effect yesterday. Even with the planned expansion, the city is still far short of its goal to add 500 kilometres of paved bike lanes. opens online shop to sell swag wTTC

Residents can help plan Toronto’s public spaces Have your say this summer in how City of Toronto planners plan the city’s public spaces. The month-long Planners in Public Spaces initiative invites residents to learn about planning issues, hear what planners do, find out how they can get more involved

in planning and ask questions about planning and development in Toronto. Attend a blue City of Toronto tent information booth at shopping malls, neighbourhood events, farmers’ markets and other popular summer locations across the city

from July 10 to Aug. 27. Local events include July 11 at Woodbine Mall, July 12 at Weston Farmers Market, July 18 at Albion Mall, Aug.14 at Eglinton Hill BIA Neighbour’s Night Out BBQ. This year’s events will focus on three significant city planning ini-

tiatives: consultation on reducing traffic congestion and improving public transit; a plan to introduce a development permit system to streamline and provide certainty in the planning process, and an engagement initiative with city planners asking residents how the city

can improve public consultation as part of the planning process. In its first year in 2013, the initiative engaged more than 1,700 individuals at 20 locations.

Financial advice for the big move Whether you’re moving into your first apartment or upgrading to a new home, making your move can be both an exciting and stressful time. From packing up your things to coordinating the move, there are lots of to-do’s to check off your list, including making sure that your finances are in order. Here are some tips to help make your move easier: Find your local bank branch. Explore your new neighbourhood to locate your closest branch and ATM. If you need additional funds during your move, you’ll know where to go. And if your bank is not nearby, consider your options and switch to another one that’s closer to you. Carry the three C’s – cash, credit cards and cheques. Keep extra cash, credit cards and blank cheques in your wallet for those expenses that you’ll incur during your move. Not all expenses are payable by credit card, so having cash and cheques will give you flexibility in your payment options. Update your contact information. Your employer, bank, credit card provider, utility companies and government agencies will need your new contact information and updated bank account number/s (if applicable). This can be done online, in-person, by phone or mail. Contact Canada Post to ensure all of your mail is being re-directed to your new home. Review your bank statements. Review your

monthly statement after the move to ensure that your automatic payments and direct deposits are being processed. This is especially important if they are being made through a new bank account. Don’t close your old account until you’ve confirmed that all your transactions have been processed.

Young adults see value in home ownership

Tips for a successful open house Hosting an open house is a valuable exercise in the home selling process, so it is important to do it right. Just as visitors are expected to follow certain etiquette when entering an open house, hosts of open houses have their own set of rules to follow. Leave: Visitors won’t feel as comfortable exploring the home with you present. If you can’t leave, try to be as inconspicuous as possible to give visitors an opportunity to experience the home.

No pets: Cats, dogs and other animals should be out of the house and any pet smells should be eliminated as much as possible. Any visible cages and pet dishes should appear spotless. Keep it clean: A clean home suggests that the home is well cared for. Clear the drive: Give your visitors somewhere to park, especially if street parking is not available or hard to come by.

The desire to own a home is alive and well among Ontario’s younger generations, according to new research from the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA). A large majority – 77 percent of Generation Y and 79 percent of Generation X – say home ownership is important to them. Are you one of them? Together, these generations include Ontarians aged 19 to 49 years of age. “A large majority of younger Ontarians believe that owning a home makes more sense than renting,” says Sean Simpson, vice president of Ipsos Public Affairs. “They also have a positive perception of the economy and the current residential real estate market, both of which are important considerations in the decision to buy a home. Insights like these help us understand the motivation for younger people to buy homes.” The study found that:

• 76 percent of Gen Y and 82 percent of Gen X, think it makes more sense to own a home rather than rent over the long-term; • 73 percent of Gen Y and 82 percent of Gen X believe real estate is a good investment; • More than half of Gen Y and Gen X have a favourable assessment of the current residential real estate market in Ontario (51 percent and 63 percent respectively), while only 23 percent and 17 percent have a negative assessment; • The majority also describe the economy as ‘good’ right now (61 percent of Gen Y and 57 percent of Gen X). “Their positive outlooks show that these new and aspiring homeowners understand the long-term investment potential of residential real estate,” says Costa Poulopoulos, president of OREA. “With summer underway, the reawakening real estate

market is a great time for prospective homebuyers to explore their ownership options.” The study, conducted by Ipsos Reid on behalf of OREA, examined public opinion on

a variety of matters pertaining to the Ontario real estate market. More information is available at www.wedothehomework.ca.

There’s nothing more irritating and uncomfortable during a summer outdoor family adventure than the onslaught of pesky mosquitoes targeting you and your loved ones as their next prey. The hot, humid summer months are a time when families can bond while experiencing fun-filled outdoor activities. However, it’s also a time where mosquitoes and deer ticks like to roam and make our lives miserable and uncomfortable. With that in mind, here are the top 10 bite prevention tips to make sure you and your family make it through this mosquito season: • Wear light-coloured, loose clothing preferably long sleeves and long pants. • Avoid wearing heavy fragrances when outdoors, especially at dusk and dawn, which is peak feeding time for mosquitoes. • Remove areas of standing water near your house or campsite as they can be breeding areas for mosqui-

toes. • Clean Gutters: Gutters clogged with debris allow stagnant water to form perfect landing zones for mosquito eggs. • Wear closed shoes instead of sandals and a hat to avoid ticks. • Tuck pants into socks. • Inspect your clothing and body after exploring wooded or grassy areas. • Avoid standing water. Mosquitoes are often attracted to water, especially standing

water, so when on summer outings avoid lakes, stagnant creeks, bogs, marshes, and swamps. • Avoid getting too hot. Mosquitoes are thought to be attracted to warm bodies so staying cool is one way to avoid bites. Avoid excessive exercise at dusk to help keep the bites at bay. • Use an insect repellent to reduce bites when spending time outdoors in mosquitoinfested areas.

Baton twirlers win another provincial title Mayor’s cricket team The Etobicoke Spectrum, a long-running baton twirling club in its 46th year, will start work in September on a third straight provincial championship. In the meantime, whether members are taking the summer off or attending summer training camps, they’re still basking in the glow of a recently finished season in which the club won its second straight provincial team championship in addition to several individual highlights. The team repeated its provincial championship in the Ontario juvenile C small dance category. And team members also excelled individually, including: • Shaye Yawlak, 10, who not only repeated as provincial bronze medalist in novice solo category (age 10, 11), but also medalled in two new events: silver in medley and gold in 2-baton. • Simone Racanelli, 15,

Etobicoke Spectrum juvenile C dance twirl team members Maddie Crozzoli, left, Madeline Cook, Shaye Yawlak and Simone Racanelli recently won the Ontario juvenile C small dance category at the provincial championships.

a seven-year veteran at the club, who won the provincial bronze medal in novice solo (age 15 to 17) and just finished shy of the podium, finishing fourth in 2-baton, an event she added this past season. • Maddie Crozzoli, the youngest member of the competitive team at nine years of age, who, in her first year of

competition, advanced from beginner to novice level, earning the club’s 2014 athlete of the year. • and Madeline Cook, 11, who, in her first year on the competitive team, had particular high marks in solo category, and was nominated for the Sportsmanship Award, presented by the Ontario

Baton Twirling Association. Besides competing at regional and provincial championships, the club also shows off its talent at community functions such as Mimico’s Party in the Park and Taste of Kingsway.

Twelve young athletes from across the Toronto area will be flying to Great Britain to take their place in the 2014 CIMA Toronto Mayor’s Cricket Team. The team will be participating in the Cricket Across the Pond scholarship program, travelling to England, where they’ll learn leadership, be ambassadors for Toronto – and play the London Mayor’s Team in London on July 18. The program was started seven years ago by Toronto Mayor David Miller and continued by his successor, Mayor Rob Ford. The 12 young people gathered together at Toronto City Hall Thursday, July 3, with Mayor Ford, city councillor Anthony Perruzza, corporate sponsers of the event Royal Bank of Canada,

the Canadian Institute of Management Accountants, and Tom’s Place menswear, who outfitted the young men with tailored suits and ties for their trip. Team members include: Shivang Kantawala, Malhar Patel and Druv Patel (all from North Albion Collegiate Institute), Chr istopher Persaud (Sinclair Secondary School), Armaan Kapoor ( Bra m p t o n Ce n t e n n i a l Secondary School), Rohit Malhotra (Stephen Lewis Secondary School), Shahryar Iqbal (St. Roch Catholic Secondary School), Mahuamad Shahzad (Bill Crothers Secondary School), Pushinder Sandhu (Lincoln M. Beat Lower Back, Disc And Sciatic Pain Now

hankfully, new natural treatment methods help many find the relief they had been searching for. Sciatica is a painful condition that affects the sciatic nerve. The pain usually radiates into one or both buttocks, descends the back of the leg and can sometime be felt in the foot. It is often a severe, knife-like pain, but can also be noticed as numbness or tingling in the leg and foot. It is unpredictable and does not go away even when you change positions or lay down. Sciatica can result from years of poor posture, muscle strain, pregnancy, excess weight, wearing high heels, or sleeping on a very soft mattress. Sciatica is often a symptom of a slipped disc, pinched nerve or arthritis. Although pain pills may temporarily cover up the symptoms, our holistic approach can provide a more effective, long term relief. “Our team members apply their individual skills and knowledge to make an accurate diagnosis and administer the right treatment that will get the best result for each patient.”

Dr. Peter Ng has a special interest in natural pain relief and Chinese medicine.

Another Mimico hall of famer

The third annual Toronto Triathlon Festival (TTF), on tap over the July 11 to 13 weekend, is expected to attract more than 5,000 competitors to a variety of events, culminating in the sprint- and Olympicdistance triathlons that will close down portions of the Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Expressway Sunday morning. Slated to be closed from 2 a.m. to noon are the eastbound lanes of the Gardiner from the Humber River to the Don Valley Parkway; and the connecting Don Valley Parkway from the Gardiner to north of the Eglinton Avenue ramp. The weekend also features two other main events: • Mixed in with Sunday’s triathlons is the 2014 Canadian Duathlon championship • On Saturday, there’s an official test-run for the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games with a Pan American Cup Race for both elite women and men (7 and 9:30 a.m., respectively) in downtown Toronto “We’re proud that the 2013 TTF generated more than $2 million in economic development,” said Jeff Chong, president of the Toronto Triathlon Festival, in a media release.

TDCAA softball champs The girls softball team from Michael Power/St. Joseph High School enjoyed a fine season on the diamond before heading off to the summer holidays. At the Ontario Girls Slo-Pitch High School Championships the team tied for third in the ‘AA’ division. Three straight victories in the TDCAA playoffs brought them to the final four in June at Centennial Park where it swept through the semifinal and championship games. They defeated all the top TDCAA teams to take the gold at the Bishop Allen Tournament outscoring its opponents 74-18, and during the regular season the team compiled a 5-1 record, outscoring its opponents 63-32.

The 2014 Induction Dinner will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1, 6 p.m., at the Marriott Niagara Falls Fallsview. More than 20 Mimico players are already in the Ontario Hall of Fame, which is located in St. Catharines. OUR BIGGEST EVENT YEAR ALMOST OVER! OF THE YE AR IS ALM OST O VER!

Etobicoke’s Obeng Marfo won her second consecutive national championship in shot put, winning the Canadian junior title in Sainte-Thérèse, Que., on the weekend. Her winning toss came in at 13.85 metres. She finished just off the podium in discus, an event she just recently took up, finishing fourth. Last year, she won the national U18 girls shot put title after placing second the previous year. This past spring she closed out her high school career at Etobicoke’s Father Henry Carr Catholic Secondary School winning the Ontario high school girls shot put championship; she also earned silver in discus. Also on the podium on

the weekend was another Etobicoke high school student, Alexandra Lucki, a student at Etobicoke’s Bishop Allen Academy, who finished second in women’s 1500m in a time of 4:27.65, less than half a second off the winning pace (4:27.38). Other city results Two other Toronto residents also earned podium finishes, both from North York. Andre Ford-Azonwanna, a graduate of North York’s Cardinal James McGuigan Catholic High School, is the undisputed fastest junior athlete in Canada, winning both the 100- and 200-metre titles. He won the 100m in 10.44 seconds with the second

place finisher coming in at 10.62; and he won the 200m in 21.29 seconds with the second place finisher coming in at 21.65. Last year, he had finished second in the 100m in 10.71. He capped his stellar high school career at McGuigan last year, winning the provincial senior boys high school 100m championship. Brebeuf College grad Elijah Silva finished third in SainteThérèse in the men’s 800m championship in a time of 1:52.24. Last year he won the provincial senior boys high school championship in the 1500m and finished third over 800m.
