Dozens of oil-slicked ducks were plucked from Mimico Creek by net-toting rescuers from the Toronto Wildlife Centre Tuesday, following an Etobicoke oil spill that’s currently under investigation. “They are all absolutely covered in oil – completely head to toe,” Andrew Wight, Toronto Wildlife Centre’s rescue team lead, said of the rescued ducks, which he numbered at least 30 and counting at around 12:30 p.m. on July 14. “This is by far the largest incident that we’ve ever had, just by sheer numbers,” he added. W h i l e t h e Mi n i s t r y o f Environment continues to investigate the source of the spill, Toronto Fire District Chief Stephan Powell tentatively identified the oily substance as a mineral oil that potentially leaked into the creek following a nearby traffic accident on Monday evening. “A truck that turned over in the northwest end of the city (Monday) night was carrying some transformers with mineral oil. The oil spilled and most of it was picked up last night, but with the rains, it’s picked it up >>>DONATIONS, page 29

Canadian pride hangs high on North Carson Street Street-wide show of patriotism spreads after flag goes up LAURA DASILVA ldasilva@insidetoronto.com What’s red and white and proud all over? North Carson Street. With glowing hearts. neighbours on the quaint strip are seeing the rise of Canadian flags that represent their patriotism and pride for the true North strong and free. Nearly 30 flags adorn the frontyard trees of the street just off of Evans Avenue, and the number is growing. It all started at a party last summer when neighbours Glenn Zulak and Laurie Keller decided to hang an old flag that had been sitting in Keller’s basement. The friends borrowed a fireman ladder from their neighbor, Joe, and unknowingly started a trend. “After the guys hung the first flag people on the street kept popping up and saying ‘I want a flag too’,”

Staff photo/ANDREW LAHODYNSKYJ

Glenn Zulak, left, and Laurie Keller stand in the middle of North Carson Street on Friday morning. The two started a street-wide Canada Flag hanging campaign to encourage patriotism.

said Keller’s wife, Jan. Last year, the number of flags could be counted on one hand, but now almost every house sports a maple leaf. Zulak and Keller literally rose to the occasion and decked out their entire street a few weeks before Canada Day. “People offered to pay for them but we said it was our treat,” Zulak said. “The cost was nothing. We had so much fun doing it.”

Residents on nearby streets have started following nationalistic suit. “A couple of weeks ago, the people on Delta Street and Gamma Street started to get on board and flags started going up around the whole neighbourhood,” Keller said. “Thirtieth Street-flags. Rimilton Street-flags.” Though climbing up a ladder to fashion finicky pieces of fabric to gnarled trees is no easy task, Zulak has a vision and is willing to put in

the work to realize it. “We’ve put a challenge out to the other streets. We want them to at least match us,” he said. “We’re hoping for 60 flags next year.” According to Keller, that proposition is both exciting and daunting. “I’m going to have to work out all winter to get ready for that,” he laughed. Meanings of the red and white banners are fluctuating as the flag fad grows.

“Someone walked by and asked if there was a soldier killed on the street,” Zulak said. “Even though there wasn’t, we hang them in honour of Canadian soldiers.” Neighbour Bradley Gregorin said recently the flags were flying in support of the Canadian soccer team in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. “Now the flags are waving for the Canadian athletes competing in the Pan Am Games,” she said. The eclectic group of neighbours are cheerleaders for Canada. “It’s the greatest country in the world. That’s the only way I can explain it,” Gregorin said. “It’s a beautiful country to live in.” Keller and his wife have lived throughout the U.S. and Europe, but always return home to Toronto. “There are enough doors here that are open for entrepreneurs,” Keller said. “Our diversity is incredible. It’s extraordinarily well balanced.” His wife said the people in Canada are gracious and happy-go-lucky compared to other places. “Everyone is welcome here. Every race, gay, straight, upside-down, it doesn’t matter. You’re accepted,” she said. As the flags on North Carson continue to wave in the wind, the dignity and passion shared by residents along the patriotic pathway remains unwavering.

hen a gun falls into the hands of a child or a teen, the blame for it cannot be placed on one person. It’s a community’s collective failure to provide opportunities, outreach and ongoing dialogue for these youth that allows gun culture to take root around them. For there to be a meaningful change, it has to be more than just the police coming to the door and patrolling the streets. There needs to be change fostered from within these neighbourhoods, but it has to happen in tangent with support from those on the who may have the means our view outside to help keep up the momentum. The Jamestown community in Collectively north Etobicoke is mourning the loss of 14-year-old Lecent Ross, we can do who died from a gunshot wound in a friend’s home last week. Though something police continue to investigate and have not laid charges, nor said who fired the gun, they did say the weapon was an illegal, semi-automatic handgun – a .40-calibre Smith & Wesson. Lecent was the third resident on this particular street to be killed by a gun in the past two years. Pastor Allan Bowen, of Abundant Life Assembly in north Etobicoke, told The Guardian his community needs saving from drugs, guns and gangs. He says they need a champion to come forward to change the community’s fate. And while the police have their obvious role in eradicating crime from these areas, there are other players that need to come to the table. We, the media, need to keep the spotlight on these issues and these communities. It defeats the purpose of serving the broader, public good when we swoop in on tragedy and fly out at the first sniff of the next breaking news story. Politicians can help push for change within government. They can secure funding for community investment and investment in at-risk youth. But their actions rely significantly on the will of the people. And it’s people who live outside of these neighbourhoods who need to start caring. There are world issues that get more support than the problems happening in our own backyard. This is our city’s problem and these people need our support.

column

The live presser is just part of the story

A

n epiphany came upon the city hall press gallery on Tuesday, after Scarborough Agincourt Councillor Jim Karygiannis finished a morning news conference offering a scaremongering interpretation of the Highway Traffic Act. It was not that Karygiannis was being irresponsible when he warned Torontonians and visitors that they could be fined up to $20,000 for booking an Uber ride. He was being irresponsible, of course, selectively reading sub-clauses from the Act to conflate the responsibility of a customer with that of a driver and dispatcher. It was straightforward work for journalists at the event to dismantle that fallacy. Had Karygiannis consulted a lawyer in coming to this position? He had not. Had he spoken with the police about the likelihood

david nickle the city of such charges being laid against passengers booking a ride with the Uber app? He had written them but not heard back. Had he heard of anyone in any jurisdiction being charged for calling an Uber cab? No. The epiphany didn’t really have much to do with Karygiannis. It had to do with us. Because the fact is that while the councillor and former Liberal MP was twisting facts, cameras were rolling – and his words were going out live on CP24, to dental office waiting rooms and airport lounges across the Greater Toronto Area. And before anyone got a chance to ask any questions – including CP24’s own journalists – Karygiannis had the floor.

People who were called in to see the hygienist before questions began might have come away thinking this imaginative scare tactic was a real thing. And that is the epiphany: the institutionalization of live-TV coverage of press events has made it easier than ever for demagoguery to take hold. The Ford brothers used live television news conferences to great effect – shouting down reporters who challenged assertions that were flat-out and selfevidently wrong. Former Councillor Doug Ford was a master at this live-TV obfustication – often picking out a particular journalist by name, and insisting that their questions were inspired by personal animosity to his poor brother Mayor Ford. One wonders how much of Ford Nation is comprised of people waiting to get the keys to their car from the muffler shop, watching

half or two-thirds of these oh-so-distorted spectacles? Karygiannis’ bit of mischief will likely have a similar but smaller effect — driving uninformed visitors and inattentive Torontonians from Uber cars to the waiting arms of Toronto’s licensed taxi drivers, a group that has enjoyed the unwavering support of Karygiannis at committee and council this term. Others, who read newspapers, watch news conferences to the end and partake of the good, balanced work that broadcast journalists do piecing the story together for newscasts, won’t be so easily fooled. But really, that’s just damage control. The medium itself has already delivered its message. David Nickle is The Guardian’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Family Owned. Proudly Canadian.

Vacationers originally came to Humber Bay by train or steamboat to stay in large hotels. By the 1920s when this photo was taken, more and more people owned cars and “camping” in sleeping cabins was all the rage. These two cabins were among a dozen built in Salisbury Campground

denise harris history corner on the northeast corner of Lake Shore Boulevard West and Park Lawn Road (then called Salisbury Avenue). The setting looks rather bleak with no shade and a railway running along the embankment behind the bushes. All through the 1920s, many area residents

built cabins like these on their properties. In 1939, the Butwell family built cabins that were joined together and opened the “Shore Breeze”, the first true motel in Humber Bay. Students cry ‘their eyes out’ after flowers stolen Second Street School parent council, students raised $500 toward pollinator garden LAURA DASILVA ldasilva@insidetoronto.com Community support is blossoming after flowers were stolen from the student-run garden at Second Street Junior Middle School. While most kids were counting down minutes to the summer vacation bell on June 25, students at

Second Street were putting their green thumbs to work planting a pollinator garden. Parent council member Myles Munschaw said students worked hard to raise $500 to build the plot by selling Freezies, having pizza lunches and other fundraisers. The garden is part of a Toronto wide eco-growth initiative, where

the school board encourages green endeavours and gives out ecoratings. “On our first try we didn’t get bronze or silver. We went right to gold,” Munschaw said. His excitement turned to anger two days after the flowers were planted. Munschaw and fellow parent

council member Natasha Monteiro visited the school for a routine watering and noticed some of the flowers had been meticulously lifted. “Each kid picked a plant. It was going to be their plant to water and take care of,” Munschaw said. “When they found out, a couple of the kids cried their eyes out.” He said all of the money raised went towards mulch, dirt and flowers and that there was none leftover to replace them. In a cathartic moment, Monteiro wrote up an exacerbated sign and hung it on the fence outside the garden. The sign notifies passersby that the money for the garden did not come from tax dollars, but from the students’ efforts. It encourages whoever stole the flowers to replace them. “We realized we had to redact some of wording. We didn’t want to name-call,” Munschaw said. “It originally said ‘lowlife.’ Now that it’s blacked out, people assume there was a much stronger word there,” he laughed. One passerby stricken by the sign was Helen Mackie. She lives in the area and came by it on her walk home from work at a nearby school.

“Who would do this to a kids project? Have we gotten that sad in society that we have to take from children’s gardens?” she asked. “I was flabbergasted.” Mackie, who is on the parent council at St. Leo Catholic School, originally saw the children gardeners hard at work digging, planting and mulching on their last day of class. “They were thrilled to be designing and planting all the flowers they worked hard for,” she said. “It warmed my heart.” She plans on donating planters to the school in hopes of replenishing the garden and students’ spirits. “You do good for others and good comes back,” she said. Second Street School principal Stephen McLean said luckily not all of the plants were taken, and that the garden is still thriving. Munschaw is not letting this incident deter him from instigating new eco-friendly initiatives. His goal is to help the school garner a platinum eco-rating next year. People interested in donating to the garden can reach Munschaw at 416201-9547. They can alternatively call Second Street Junior Middle School after Aug. 31 at 416-394-7640.

Parent council members Myles Munschaw and Natasha Monteiro recently mounted a sign encouraging the perpetrator who stole flowers from the student garden at Second Street Junior Middle School to replace them. Children planted a pollinator garden on June 25 and a number of the flowers were illegally removed a few days later.

Uber has launched a carpooling service in Toronto to take advantage of projected congestion levels during the Pan Am Games. Until July 26, UberPool allows users of its contentious UberX ride-share service to split fare costs with a fellow customer headed in the same direction. Uber is also promising the carpooling option will make use of the temporary HOV lanes installed for the Games on major roadways. That will not be music to the ears of Toronto taxi drivers, who’ve opposed Uber’s operations from the start. started for BLOOR BIKE LANES wPETITION

With Toronto council endorsing the expansion of bike lanes on Adelaide and Richmond streets, attention from the city’s cycling community has shifted to Bloor Street. The street has long been an aspiration for cycling activists looking for a major east-west

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT lane network, but adding lanes has faced opposition from some storefront business owners who fear a loss of street parking will negatively affect bottom-lines. But that hasn’t stopped 860 people from signing a CycleTO petition calling for a pilot lane on Bloor by 2016, and for the street to be included in the city’s 10-year framework for cycling. Visit www.cycleto.ca MOBILE USERS GET TTC Cell access wWIND

WIND mobile users will now be able to use their phones at every TTC station on the U subway Loop. The company became the first – and so far only – mobile provider to sign up to provide cellular access in the subway system. Now with this week’s announcement, cellphone reception will be

available within 18 downtown stations, though not on the trains themselves. BAI Canada announced it will expand TConnect subway WiFi access to both Bathurst and Sherbourne stations following the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. your electric car at IKEA wcharge

IKEA will install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at its Canadian stores. The move is expected to take place by the end of August and two stations will be available per store, the company announced last week in a statement. “A typical visit to an IKEA store gives enough time for an EV driver to ‘top-up’ their battery, enhancing their travel range and preventing ‘range anxiety,’” the statement reads. William Osler employees back hospital with $1 million pledge Employees of William Osler Health System have pledged $1 million to support redevelopment initiatives at Osler’s three hospital sites. Brampton Civic Hospital, Etobicoke General Hospital and the new Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness will benefit from employees’ generosity.

The pledge is being made through the Osler Foundation’s Employee Giving Campaign. Orlando Corporation’s $15 Million Matching Challenge will match the pledge, resulting in $2 million being raised for redevelopment. Government funding covers operational costs of the hospitals, but all equipment costs

and 10 per cent of construction costs need to be raised by the community. The employee pledge will finance redevelopment projects and new medical technology and diagnostic equipment needs. To make a donation visit www.oslerfoundation.org -Laura DaSilva

Fight lure of gang life, pastor tells youth >>>from page 1 when she talked about her daughter. “She was always smiling, always willing to lend a hand to her friends. She was very, very popular.” Last month, Lecent graduated from Grade 8 at Greenholme Junior Middle School, where she ran track, and played on the school’s volleyball and soccer teams. She routinely babysat neighbours’ children, and took them to the park. “She loved drawing, designing her web page. She was always a kid at heart. She still played with Littlest Pet Shop. She has a collection upstairs in her bedroom.” Jesquith spoke with The Guardian at her home July 15 as an unseasonably cool morning burst with sunshine and singing birds, belying her crushing grief. He r c h i l d re n s u rrounded her – stepdaughter Kajuana Ross, 20, daughter Nevaeh Jesquith, seven, her name the backwards spelling of ‘Heaven’ and son, Elijah Jesquith, four, too young to comprehend his loss, curling up with his mom on a recliner, and gently covering her with a blanket. A memorial to Lecent teeming with bouquets of flowers, countless pots of begonias, an angel statue and a garden stone that reads, “Look for the Angel in your life. They are everywhere” grows on Jesquith’s front lawn. Melted wax from more than a dozen candles dots the sidewalk. Jesquith said she wants someone held accountable for her young daughter’s violent death. “I want to see someone charged,” she said. “I don’t want my daughter to die in vain. I just want justice.” Toronto police continue to treat Lecent’s shooting as suspicious while they work the investigation with forensic assistance, said Supt. Ron Taverner, 23 Division unit commander. “We have no determination yet of the sequence of events that transpired

Photo/PETER C. MCCUSKER

Alicia Jesquith grieves the loss of her daughter Lecent Ross, 14, to a fatal gun shot wound.

that day,” Taverner said. “It’s very tragic; a 14-yearold girl loses her life. We’re trying to determine where the gun came from and how it got into that particular location.” Lecent’s funeral will be held Saturday, July 25 at 10 a.m. at Abundant Life Assembly Pentecostal Church, 145 Dixon Rd.. Her viewing will be Friday, July 24 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Bernardo Funeral Home, 855 Albion Rd. A fund — online at gofundme.com/lecent — has been set up for public donations to help the family with funeral expenses. At Guardian deadline Wednesday, just more than half of the fund’s $15,000 goal had been raised. Lecent’s aunt, Dene Stewart, said she believes her niece’s legacy is to send a strong message to other neighbourhood youth to steer clear of the drug and gun culture that breeds violence. “God is sending a message through Lecent,” Stewart said. “She’s a leader. People listen to her. I hope all the other kids in the neighbourhood say, ‘I don’t want to get caught up in this. “Lecent was going to be that person to come out of the ‘hood and be somebody. She was going to do something to give back.” Pa s t o r A l B ow e n , Abundant Life’s senior pastor, called for leaders in the Jamestown community near Martin Grove Road and Finch Avenue West – and in the city at large – to stand up and demand an end to the violence. “People feel grief after a death then go back to

normal life then there is another shooting and they feel grief and sorrow. It’s a cycle,” Bowen lamented. Bowen urged area teens to stand firm against the drug culture’s allure of fast cars, cool clothes and cash. “It sucks in your kids,” an angry Bowen said of the drug culture. “Kids are into drug usage, drug trafficking and guns show up and death can sometimes be part of the package. “Damn it to hell.”

Xtreme Couture celebrates 7 years with a party A lot has changed in the seven years since Xtreme Couture first opened its doors. When the 33,000 Sq Ft. facility first opened, MMA wasn’t even a sanctioned sport in Ontario. “Over time we have been able to build our program from the inside out,” says manager Jason Gaudette. The boxing ring, punching bags, full size octagon and 40 MMA classes make it the largest facility of its kind in Canada. Xtreme Couture caters to all kinds of fitness activities - including hot yoga, weight machines, free weights, group fitness, spin classes, kids’ classes and dozens of pieces of cardio equipment. “Our kids program is important to our future,” says Gaudet. “It really makes our facility a family experience.” Xtreme Couture works with many local schools, and was a part of the Mimico Tulip Festival to promote anti-bullying campaigns and healthy living for kids. To celebrate the seven year anniversary on July 22, Xtreme Couture is holding a one-of-a-kind event, complete with a BBQ, bouncy castle, face

painting, a live band and DJs. Throughout the day Xtreme Couture will be running free specialty classes, taught by professional athletes for members and non-members alike. Renowned boxing coach Billy Martin and first ever Canadian female pro champion, NABA featherweight champion, and world ranked No. 1, Sandy Tsagouris will both be instructing boxing classes. Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai classes will be taking place for the kids. UFC fans should be sure to attend newly signed UFC fighter Misha Cirkunov’s class at noon. Non-members who have fun kicking butt in the classes can take advantage of special one-day deals on memberships. Since working out is good for your heart, Xtreme Couture is taking things one step further and raising money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation all day on July 22, and leading up to the big event. Xtreme Couture is located at 700 Kipling Ave. Visit www.xtremecouture.com or call 416-5031600 for more information about the facility.

Canada’s environmental protection services? Sliced. Canada’s food safety services? Butchered. Veterans Affairs? Nine Veterans Affairs offices shut down and front-line services gone. Canadians who paid into Employment Insurance denied benefits. Canada’s public search and rescue services? Systematically dismantled. Essential public services threatened without regard for the safety and welfare of millions of Canadians.

VOTE TO STOP THE CUTS. A MESSAGE OF PUBLIC INTEREST FROM THE PUBLIC SERVICE ALLIANCE OF CANADA.

Donations wanted to help with ducks’ rehabilitation >>>from page 1 and washed it into the creek,” he said, noting that firefighters on the scene Tuesday helped city officials set up several booms along Mimico Creek in an attempt to stop the oil’s spread. “We’ve got several city agencies working together to try and collect this.” Meanwhile, Wight said he and his team of about 10 Toronto Wildlife Centre rescuers – both staff and volunteers – arrived at Ravenscrest Park (just northeast of Martin Grove and Rathburn roads) armed with nets and Girl Guide cookie boxes in which to transport the oil-coated ducks to the North York-based centre’s wildlife hospital at around 10:30 a.m. “The (ducks) will be stabilized first thing, and then once we’re sure that they can handle it, they’ll be put through a rigorous bath using dish soap,” Wight explained, noting that he expects the oil to come off the ducks “fairly well” after a three-stage bath and rinse

process. “However, they’ve all gone through a lot of stress in the heat and with the ingestion of the oil (which can cause gastrointestinal issues). Their insides are going to be upset, so we’re going to be addressing that and hoping that none of them ingested so much (oil) that it’ll be terminal. There’s quite a bit of work ahead of us.” Among those doing some of the grunt work Tuesday were a net-wielding Tim Rawn, 26, and his 11-year-old brother Derek.

A volunteer with the Toronto Wildlife Centre, Rawn got the call to attend Mimico Creek for the duck rescue while on the road with Derek, and decided to bring his kid brother along. “It’s kinda fun, but it’s also kinda sad,” said Derek, who spent much of the morning fetching the boxes in which the captured ducks were being held for transport. “It’s very sad,” agreed Rawn. “We’re here to help get them rehabilitated – it’s all for the love of animals. These are slicked animals; it’s not natural

for them.” Kate Jordan, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, said several environmental officers

were also on-scene at Mimico Creek “working diligently” to determine the source of the oil spill. “We have taken samples from the creek, we’re walking upstream of the creek looking at the outfalls, and we’re working with the city in terms of the storm sewers in the area – all in an effort to determine the source,” she said. “Certainly the traffic accident is something we are considering (as a potential source), but the source has yet to be identified definitively.” Whatever its source, Wight said the oil spill’s detrimental impact on local ducks cannot

be understated. “They’re completely covered (with the oil) head to toe, and the problem with that is that their feathers have waterproofing agents in them including an oil, and those are just completely ruined,” he explained, noting that without those waterproofing agents, the ducks lose their insulation and can become waterlogged. Donations to treat the ducks are currently being sought by the Toronto Wildlife Centre, a registered charity funded primarily through donations.

Canada takes BMX gold at Pan Am Games B.C.’s Tory Nyhaug tears up the course to take first place: ‘I can’t even describe what it feels like’ CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com It was a golden day at the Centennial Park Pan Am BMX Centre for Canada’s Tory Nyhaug, who dominated each and every one of his races Saturday on his way to the top of the Pan Am podium. “I can’t even describe what it feels like,” the 23-year-old Coquitlam, BC native told media following his gold-medal finish in men’s Pan Am BMX event in Etobicoke Saturday afternoon. “I’ve got my parents in the crowd and to get to hug them after meant everything to me. This is the first big win of my career and I couldn’t have done it without the amazing support staff I have behind me...It feels amazing.” Budding BMX talents James Hedgcock, 13, and Kyle Goodrum, 14, were among the hundreds of jubilant, Maple-leaf flag-waving fans cheering Nyhaug on from the stands. Both said they hope to follow in Nyhaug’s footsteps and represent Canada on an international stage one day. “Watching him win pushes me to want to be as good as he is, and to train harder,” said Kyle, who lives in Burlington and rides for Kuwahara Canada BMX. Added James, himself a Canadian champion BMXer who rides with UK-based Factory Pier BMX: “It was awesome. I’ve watched (Tory) race for a while now, so it was pretty cool to see him win.” Canadian fans weren’t the only ones who came out in droves to

The 38 athletes (24 men and 14 women) competing in BMX at these Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games hailed from Argentina, Aruba, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, U.S., Jamaica, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela – and each country was well represented in the stands and in the grass seating at the 3.2-hectare Centennial Park Pan Am BMX Centre. Team USA’s Felicia Stancil, who won Pan Am gold in the women’s BMX competition Saturday, saw her entire extended family – including mom Mary, dad Jamie, little sister Riley, as well as her stepdad and step siblings – travel from Illinois to Toronto to cheer her on while decked out in Team USA T-shirts. “We’re really just hoping she has a great time, does her best and, more than anything, is happy with her performance,” Mary Stancil said of her daughter, before witnessing the 20 year old bring home the gold medal. “I just want her to soak it all up and enjoy it. We are beyond proud. She’s worked really, really hard to get here – she’s been riding since she was just four.” Team Colombia also boasted a

sizeable contingent of fans – many of whom left Etobicoke heart-broken on Saturday after gold-medal favourite Mariana Pajon-Londono took a spill in the women’s finals and failed to finish the race. Carolina Perea, Nilgen Perez, Camila Bolivar and Julian Bolivar came to the Pan Am BMX competition from Aurora armed with a colourful “Go Mariana” banner to cheer on the 23-year-old Olympic gold-medalist. “We really want her to win,” Perez said before the Pajon-Londono crashed in the finals. “She’s petite, but good – and she’s the Olympic champion.” Biggest fanbase The biggest fanbase by far, however, belonged to Team Canada – with many in the crowd clad in red and white, waving Canadian flags, and cheering on each of the hometown athletes, which also included Airdrie, Alberta’s Jimmy Brown, 26, and Daina Tuchscherer, 18, and Amelia Walsh, 22, of Ayr, Ontario. Nyhaug fan Brandon Hovencamp, 10, and his 15-year-old sister Britney made the trip to Etobicoke for Saturday’s big competition from Kingston, while Malakai, 12, and Hannah Gallacher, 15, came from Milton to cheer on “good friend of the family” Amelia Walsh. All four are BMX racers themselves – the Hovencamps race out of Kingston BMX, the Gallachers with Miltown Cycle – who recently had the opportunity to test out the new Centennial Park Pan Am BMX Centre for themselves at last month’s Canada Cup test event. Constructed as a legacy project for the Toronto 2015 Games, the Pan Am BMX Centre’s $4.5 million, permanent, 350-metre bike course boasts both five- and eight-metre start ramps and a compact closedlooped design consisting of four straightaways and three banked turns filled with challenging jumps that test riders’ skills. “It’s a lot bigger and a lot faster than any other track I’ve been on,” agreed Malakai. “I like jumping and going fast, so it was good.” Metroland Media is pooling all of its Pan Am Games’ coverage in one place online. Our Mother of Perpetual Help

Holy Spirit Thou make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who give the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory. Amen. Person must pray this 3 consecutive days without stating one's wish. After the 3rd day your wish will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your favor has been granted.
