Newlyweds Tripti Ninan and Ryan Perera are Millennials and purchased their first home in Toronto just under a year ago. Based on their combined income and the down payment they were able to come up with, the couple bought a 700-square-foot, one-bedroom-plusden condo unit in Toronto’s west end near a subway station. “We knew our first step would be a condo. We wanted to start small and we wanted something low maintenance,”

It also helped that both Ninan and Perera’s parents have purchased a condo in the last five years and they were actively involved in helping their parents navigate the experience. “We took what we learned from our parents and applied it when the time came to buy a condo,” she said. The couple sacrificed having a second vehicle to save more money

You must

learn to do more with less,” she said. Real estate broker Frank Leo, who has been serving clients in Toronto and the GTA for 28 years, said for Millennials the biggest thing is the pressure of being “squeezed out of the market.” Leo, of RE/MAX West Realty Ltd., advises young buyers to avoid jumping into the market before doing their research, specifically knowing exactly what they want and can afford. “A good representative on your side helps keep your emotions in check,” he said. “If a property isn’t what you need or want then don’t buy it.” He added those between the ages of 18 to 35 who want to purchase a property in Toronto need to take a close look at their needs, and based on their budget a good realtor will be able to help find the right home to buy. “If you buy well, that’s a good investment. If you buy poorly then you’re in trouble. You want to make sure you have someone who knows their stuff to give you the best advice,” he said. Leo also said Millennials need to realize it’s not likely they’ll be buying the home of their dreams the first time around. “Often, the first property is a stepping stone that fits your current needs and one that will get a good return,” he said. “Real estate is all about understanding value and getting the best property for your money.” Meray Mansour, real estate agent with Royal LePage Estate Realty, agreed noting getting into a smaller “first-step home” like a condo or a small bungalow for a few years is what will help first-time homeowners build equity for their dream home. With 18 years of experience in Toronto’s real estate market, she said bidding wars for anything in the $550,000 to $700,000 range are to be expected. “There’s so much demand and very low stock. I advise my clients to understand bidding wars are a reality but to not be discouraged,” she said. “And because today’s market is so hot, being too emotional can lead to irrational decisions. You need a realtor that’s going to advocate for you in this type of market.” She encouraged Millennials to go for it if they do have enough money saved up to get into the market. “Don’t wait because the market is so hot,” she said.

he city kicked off Bike Month, which runs from May 30 to June 30, with a blitz by Toronto police writing tickets to drivers parking in bike lanes. The heightened enforcement campaign called “Right 2 Bike” ran for one week until June 5 and saw parking enforcement officers working with traffic services and divisional units hand out 273 tickets at $150 a piece, totalling $40,950 in fines. That sounds like a lot, but the campaign to target drivers with total disregard for cyclists should continue in some shape or form. Bad habits are hard to break, especially this one. Since a bylaw change in 2014, which increased the fine for blocking a bike lane from $60 to $150, about 17,000 tickets have been issued to date. For more recent empirical evidence, just check Twitter where cyclists regularly tweet pictures of cars, taxis and our view delivery trucks blocking bike Make biking to lanes. While parking enforcement work easier for officer Brian Moniz noted most of the enforcement in the blitz cyclists took place in the downtown core, this could be a growing and more prevalent issue across the city. additional blitzes

With the city discussing how to expand cycling infrastructure in Toronto to the tune of $16 million per year for 10 years, any increase in bike lanes would only exacerbate the problem of cyclists being put in danger by drivers blocking their right-of-way. Perhaps having additional blitzes and an increased awareness campaign, combined with even higher fines for offenders is a potential solution to curbing bad driver behaviour. The alternative of not having some kind of sustained campaign to ensure the safety of cyclists will have an adverse impact on what the city seemingly wants to achieve through holding Bike Month each year. That is to encourage people to get out of their cars and ride their bikes more. Bike to Work days? Good luck finding more people to participate if it means navigating Toronto streets with the added challenge of swerving around parked cars.

Karygiannis plays role of council’s angry man Ah, Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Jim Karygiannis. We have not seen his like since… well really, since the last time the voters of Ward 39-Scarborough Agincourt sent a councillor to City Hall. Jim Karygiannis is the first-term successor to Toronto’s former budget chief, Mike Del Grande — who kept Ward 39 strange for a decade before that, often with the help of Karygiannis himself, who had been a Liberal MP for even longer in the area. In 2004, the two of them made headlines, personally helping to bust up marijuana grow-ops in their communities, while Del Grande also kept an inventory of constituents whose homes violated city bylaws. Del Grande had a brief tenure as former Mayor Rob Ford’s first budget chief, but consistently bemoaned the failings of his colleagues on council and delinquent constituents alike, maintaining a consistent and in retro-

david nickle the city spect magnificent rage. When Del Grande decided he’d had enough in 2014, Karygiannis happily assumed his angry role — at if anything a greater volume. He took on the Uber ride-sharing industry in the rhetorical equivalent of a berserk rampage, behaving so badly during Licensing and Standards Committee hearings that Mayor John Tory called him on the carpet. More than a decade after he and Del Grande waged their own local War on Drugs, he came to the defence of illegal storefront marijuana shops. And this week, two reports from the city’s Integrity Commissioner calling him out for behaviour not too dissimilar to those pot-busting days with Mike Del Grande. In one instance in 2015, Karygiannis scared the bejeezers out of a family

guilty of parking on the “skirt” of their home’s driveway. In another, he scared the bejeezers out of an Uber driver who he’d spotted going to pick up a ride in a house in his ward. The Integrity Commissioner found that Karygiannis had run afoul of the councillors’ code of conduct, which incredibly requires that councillors not intimidate people in the course of going about their business. On June 7, Karygiannis mumbled an apology on the floor of council. But he wasn’t sorry, not really. In an interview, Karygiannis maintained that he should be able to tell constituents to obey the law if he wants to, particularly if the city is slow to enforce. And if he’s intimidating in the course of doing that? “Maybe the method, she (the Integrity Commissioner) doesn’t agree with it. Maybe my method is a little rough,” he said. “I’m a big guy. What can I tell you? I’m six feet

and 260 pounds. When you see me walking up to you, you feel intimidated.” Maybe there always has to be a Jim Karygiannis at City Hall: someone who ignores decorum and puts on a show, a John Belushi character turning civilized discourse into a proper Animal House. When he was a councillor, Rob Ford fulfilled that role, spewing rhetoric across the city while digging down on the little things in neighbourhoods and dissing his colleagues for their city-funded office budgets. Doug Ford played that role a bit when Rob became mayor and Giorgio Mammoliti still dips toe in that pool from time to time, but clearly he’s getting tired. So maybe it’s good, that Karygiannis is here to keep an old Toronto tradition alive.

Nilda Patey feels right at home at Youth Without Shelter CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com The first time Nilda Patey walked through the doors of Youth Without Shelter (YWS), it felt like a homecoming of sorts. “This (kind of work) has always been innate for me. This is just who I am,” said Patey, the north Etobicokebased youth shelter’s newly minted executive director. “So when this opportunity presented itself, it was almost like a coming home; it was like, ‘Yeah, this is what I love, this is my job, this is a perfect fit.’” Before taking over the reigns of YWS from longtime executive director Wendy Horton, who retired in April, Patey enjoyed a 20-year career within the health and human services sector – holding various leadership positions at organizations such as the John Howard Society of Peel, United Way of Peel, Knight’s Table and, most recently, Bethell Hospice. “She has lead organizations through periods of substantial growth and transition, and developed and implemented innovative programs and services,” Moez Bawania, chair of the YWS board of directors, noted

in a statement announcing Patey as Horton’s replacement. But it was while helping to establish two shelters in Brampton at the very beginning of her career, Patey said, that she found her true passion. “I started my career just over 20 years ago in corrections, and that lead me to being part of a coalition in

the region of Peel that championed the creation of the two shelters in Brampton,” she said. “So I got to spend a lot of time on the street, working with homeless folks and young people that were homeless – and I even started a graffiti program back then in the early days. And I always remembered it as a really good experience.”

Returning to those roots two decades later at YWS, Patey added, has so far proven an “incredible” experience. “I have to say, the first time I walked through the doors, I just knew this was an incredible place... the team here is amazing; they make my job a lot easier,” she said. “Just watching the young people as they transform and getting to be a part of that was what really brought me here.” Less than two months into the job, Patey said she’s still getting the lay of the land but hopes to implement a number of new initiatives in the days to come for her young charges at YWS and the staff who care for them. “It’s still early days, but I think the first win, for me, will certainly be getting into the fold of the team and getting to a place where all of us have a shared vision and a shared way forward,” Patey said. “And I think the piece that’s resonated after talking with folks is we really need to ramp up our social/ recreational activities for the residents that are here on-site in-house. That seems to be the biggest need right now.”

Patey said she plans to allow staff members the opportunity to each “champion” an activity – starting with YWS’s operations manager Ben Omoregie, who just this week started up a weekly soccer game for the youth at a nearby park. “I want to honour them by giving them a chance one day a month to champion an activity – to take an afternoon to do something they love with the youth,” she said, noting other staff have expressed an interest in gardening, while she herself plans to hit the kitchen. “This Sunday, one of the residents and I will be making a butter chicken and white rice lunch for 60 of us. Neither one of us has ever made it before, but we both love it, so it’ll be interesting.” The end goal of the initiative, Patey said, is to foster a sense of “connectedness” at the shelter that will help usher YWS’s residents into the next phases of their lives. “What we need is to make sure that we’re providing quality care for folks while they’re in transition to their forever homes,” she said.

Carrier sets out to help orphans in Uganda Horses race CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com For most kids, paper route money is spent almost as quickly as it’s earned on the latest video games, toys, clothes and candy. Not so for Mimico’s James Kelly, who’s saved up all his earnings as an Etobicoke Guardian carrier over the last two-and-a-half years to put towards a much more noble cause – a trip to Africa to help orphans in the impoverished East African nation of Uganda. “I’m excited to go to the orphanage and just help the orphans out of the kindness of my heart,” the 10-yearold John English JMS student said of his September trip to volunteer in a Watoto orphan’s village. “I think it will make me feel really good.” James’ dream of travelling to Africa on just such a mission trip was born five years ago, when he, his mom Jennifer, and dad Ciaran billeted members of the travelling Watoto Children’s Choir while they were in town to perform at All Saints Kingsway Anglican Church. The choir is part of Watoto Child Care Ministries, a branch of the Watoto Church in Uganda that builds villages complete with schools, churches, medical centers and homes to populate with new family units built around orphans and widows. Having three little girls who grew up in just such a village stay at their home in 2011 inspired James, who was five at the time, to want to follow in the footsteps of some of his fellow All Saints Kingsway parishioners and travel to Uganda on a volunteer mission with Watoto, his mom recalled. “He was so young when he first asked if we could go that it sort of seemed like an empty promise at the time. But James has always had a sense of adventure,” Jennifer said, noting she told James they had to hold off on the trip until he was at least 10, thinking he’d likely lose interest in the meantime. “But the (Watoto trip) just sort of never went away. It wasn’t like we talked about it every day, but if something came up about Africa he’d always say, ‘Well, when we go

to Africa...’ Now he’s 10 and here we are on our way. It’s hard to believe after all this time, we’ll be in Africa in three months.” In the meantime, though, the Kelly family has been hard at work fundraising the money needed for the Sept. 1 to 16 trip James will embark on with his mother. Adding to James’ Etobicoke Guardian earnings, which will pay

for his airfare, he’s also saved up all his birthday money this year, hosted a garage sale in May with items contributed by family, friends and neighbours in Mimico, and, with donations from Starbucks and San Remo Bakery, held a successful coffee and donut fundraiser. James also hopes to hold a bottle drive, and has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the

Watoto village itself. And last, but not least, the aspiring NBA basketball player and budding actor recently landed the lead role in a Canadian Tire Jumpstart program commercial, which filmed last week and is slated to hit the airwaves during this summer’s Rio 2016 Olympics. James’ earnings from that TV commercial – his first – will go towards a Watoto safari he wants to take while in Uganda, he reported. “I’m most looking forward to the safari, because there’s just so many different animals and it’ll be fascinating to see them up close,” he said, listing rhinos, elephants, cheetahs and giraffes among his must-see list. Jennifer said she’s most eager to see the impact the life-changing Watoto experience will have on her son. While in Uganda, the pair will be working in one of Watoto’s villages for babies, where abandoned infants and toddlers aged newborn to two years are cared for. “It is common for the babies to be premature, abused, neglected and to have serious medical complications when they arrive,” states the Watoto website, noting many of the vulnerable children it cares for are abandoned or orphaned due to poverty, lack of education, and the HIV/AIDS crisis. Jennifer and James will be helping to feed, care for, and play with those babies, as well as other tasks such as doing laundry, washing toys and cleaning. “I’m really excited just to experience it all with James. It’s going to be heartbreaking at times, but also very rewarding, so I’m really looking forward to doing it together and seeing it through his eyes,” Jennifer said. “As a 10-year-old boy living in Mimico, things are pretty good for him with camps and basketball and friends and 7-Eleven Slushies. So I hope he comes home with a better understanding of the world and an appreciation for what he has, so that he can share with others just how lucky we are.”

for St. Joe’s

It was a winning night at the races for the ‘St. Joe’s Plate at Woodbine Racetrack,’ which raised $125,000 in support of mental health care at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, last week. In its fourth year, the event brought together more than 325 people to support a critical priority for the west-end hospital. Proceeds will go towards a $3 million project to expand and enhance the Mental Health Emergency Services Unit. The unit is the first point of contact for the 6,500 men, women and children who come to St. Joe’s every year in crisis due to a mental health condition. “It’s inspiring ”We have one to see so many of the busiest units in the GTA friends come and expanding together to this facility means support mental we can enhance illness in our our emergency community.” care service and the care space so our providers can continue giving our patients the best care possible,” Dr. Jose Silveira, chief of psychiatry, said in a statement. The vision for the unit is to have eight private rooms and to design the unit in a way that encourages healing – with space that feels warm, comfortable and calming at a time when people are anxious and scared. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, every dollar raised at this year’s event was doubled. St. Joe’s Plate was once again spearheaded by Mary Anne De Monte Whelan with the support of a committee that included two mothers who have been personally impacted by mental health. “We have experienced such incredible support for this event from both the community we serve and others who want to support the advancement of mental health services for those in need,” Maria Dyck, president and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation, said in a statement. “It’s inspiring to see so many friends come together to support mental illness in our community.”

The Granite Club hosts Hope for Hearts Gala fundraiser for SickKids A fundraiser for clinical heart research at The Hospital for Sick Children will be held in North York tomorrow. The second annual Hope for Hearts Gala will take place at The Granite Club, 2350 Bayview Ave. A cocktail reception will begin at

7 p.m., with dinner from 8 to 10 p.m., followed by an afterparty. The gala will support research at the echocardiography laboratory

at SickKids.

Each year, about one out of every 100 babies born has a congenital heart defect and more than half need surgery to

survive. By using ultrasound technologies, doctors are now able to diagnose the presence of a cardiac abnormality as early as 18 to 30 weeks into pregnancy. The gala’s fundraising goal is $50,000.

“ We w a n t p e o p l e t o understand that research is practical and that it can change lives,” Dr. Barbara Cifra, founder of the Hope for Hearts Gala, said in a release. “The research we do can not only change a child’s life,

it can save a child’s life.” Tickets cost $250 and can be purchased through www.eventbrite.ca/e/hopefor-hearts-gala-2016-tickets-21133488834

Students take ‘drunk’ spin behind the wheel ‘Horrible’ results for Guardian reporter despite considering himself an experienced driver ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com High school students were allowed to drive impaired in north Etobicoke last week. And they each had a police officer beside them. The students were taking part in Ford Motor Company’s Driving Skills for Life program, which included taking a drive wearing goggles that simulate alcohol impairment. The event took place in a closed parking lot at Woodbine Racetrack. “We want to demonstrate to them that there should be a zero tolerance for impairment and driving,” said Dave Drimmie, a Ford instructor. “They’re going to run over cones, they’re going to weave in and out of the lane, they’re going to either drive very slowly or very quickly, all issues that will demonstrate to them that it’s not safe to drive a vehicle impaired.” Grade 12 student Ryan Harris said the program changed his perspective, literally. ‘everything is blurry’ “You put the goggles on and everything is blurry,” he said. “You don’t know where everything is. It shows you how hard it is to actually drive drunk and how unsafe it is.” One goggle mimics how a person sees after a couple of drinks while another after four or five drinks. “We have fun in this simulation. But it’s not fun when it’s done in your own motor vehicle,” instructor Ralph Stotschek told students. The teens were cautioned about the three d’s: drunk driving, drugged driving and distracted driving. “If you think you could do it, you’ll find out the hard way that it cannot be done,” Stotschek warned. Const. Ryan Willmer of 23 Division said he hopes the program would deter teens “from making the wrong decisions.” “It gives youth the opportunity to see what it’s really like to drive impaired.” Willmer said he has come across young drunk drivers countless times over the past decade. Etobicoke Guardian reporter Andrew Palamarchuk, with Toronto police Const. Ryan Willmer in the passenger seat, crushes pylons as he drives off course while wearing fatal vision goggles that simulate alcohol impairment. The test is part of a workshop for high school students regarding the dangers of impaired, distracted and highspeed driving held last week on the grounds of Woodbine Racetrack.

being pulled over by the constable: “I was drinking and I thought I could drive.” “Some ended up in bad accidents and some ended up with me stopping them before they got into an accident,” said Willmer, adding there were also those who “couldn’t be charged because they died.” Seeing the carnage by impaired drivers first hand is troubling, the officer said in an interview. “It makes me think: Why isn’t the message getting out. There are so many campaigns. ... We’ve got to figure out a way to make it click. This could be it,” he said, referring to the driving skills for life program. Participants also had a lesson on vehicle handling and distracted driving and could also try on a special suit that simulates drug impairment.

Writer recounts lesson on impaired driving Etobicoke Guardian reporter Andrew Palamarchuk wore the goggles to simulate drunk driving. This is his account: “You did horrible,” Const. Ryan Willmer tells me after I took a drive wearing goggles that simulated alcohol impairment with him beside me. Feeling dizzy with distorted vision, I didn’t see the cones and missed turns. Right after pulling out of a parking spot, I “hugged the cor-

ner too close and hit two or three pylons,” Willmer said. “And then throughout...you way overshot the turns. Even parking, you’re off by a few feet.” What would have happened had I been out on the street? It would have been deadly, Willmer replied. “There’s a very low percentage of people that are driving around drunk like this that something doesn’t happen,” he added.

City traffic assistants, which is to say police officers, will be stationed at key intersections to help improve traffic flow as part of Toronto’s congestion management plan, said Mayor John Tory Monday. Tory announced the pilot project, which will see eight intersections and stretches of road overseen by “traffic assistant personnel,” or police officers. The plan, Tory said, is to make traffic move more quickly and make the intersections safer for pedestrians and cyclists. “The No. 1 priority for Toronto residents continues to be their ability to move around this city. We’re taking action to keep Toronto moving by targeting some of our most congested intersections,” Tory said in a statement. “Traffic assistant personnel will improve the flow of traffic by directing traffic, making sure vehicles don’t block intersections and stopping illegal left turns.” The intersections and roadways, which will be overseen four weeks in the summer and another four weeks in the fall, include the following: n Bay Street and Queen Street n Front Street and Simcoe Street n Lake Shore Boulevard Parklawn Road n Sheppard Avenue and Yonge Street n Front Street and University Avenue n Bay Street and Bloor Street n University Avenue and Adelaide Street n Bay Street from Bloor Street to Front Street

There’s a hitch for seniors and youth to activate their Presto discount Some seniors are crying foul about Presto. While the smart-fare card distinguishes between regular and special fares, in the case of senior and student rates there’s a catch. In order to receive the discounted fare rate, a “concession” must be added to the card, and the only place to do that is Davisville station. That could mean a long trek for mobility-challenged seniors. At a funding announcement last week, TTC CEO Andy Byford said discussions were underway between the TTC and Presto for expanding the number of outlets to obtain a concession, as well as adding full-service vending machines to provide the service. But he said the focus right now is getting all TTC vehicles and stations Presto equipped by the end of the year. conference is private wtransportation

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT There’s an important conference taking place next week, one which will see representatives from transportation agencies across the continent taking part. But not much has been publicized about the threeday Big Transportation Data conference, organized by the city and the University of Toronto. Behind closed doors That’s because the initiative will take place behind closed doors, with the intention of acting as a knowledge exchange and idea sharing session for using so-called big data in aid of transportation planning, according to an organizer. Regardless, municipal transportation staffers, private industry representatives and academics are all

expected to take part. express marks first birthday wup

The oft-maligned Union Pearson (UP) Express celebrated some good news this week. The city’s only direct rapid-transit link between Union Station and Toronto Pearson Airport celebrated its first full year of operation on Monday. The service first came online before the start of the Toronto Pan Am Games, but was quickly excoriated by the public and elected officials alike for its high cost of use. With moribund ridership attributed to the high cost of fares, Metrolinx did an aboutface earlier this year and slashed prices significantly. Since then, the agency reports ridership has quadrupled. 4 Things You Need to Know When Buying a New Roof Shingle manufacturers have application manuals specifying how their products should be installed on your house. Your product warranty is supplied by the manufacturer, and could become void if the proper instructions are not followed when your new roof system and shingles are applied. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: Your roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks, the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.

What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting can cause your shingles to fail prematurely, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: You have many shingle options with regard to style, colour, longevity and price. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal and longer life expectancy, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis. Peter & Greg Walker Contracting have been serving the needs of Toronto homeowners since 1981. They are members of the Certified Contractors Network, have manufacturer certified installers, are fully insured and have been voted Etobicoke’s “Top Roofing Company” 15 times and including 2016.

Rotary discusses British Home Children Rotary Etobicoke’s next Big Idea Forum will tackle a topic unknown to most Canadians: British Home Children. From 1867 to 1949, close to 120,000 of these children, toddlers to adolescents were sent to Canada from Britain without their parents to work as indentured farm labourers and domestics. Only two per cent of these British Home Children were truly orphans.

Rotary Etobicoke invites residents to learn about the history of British Home Children Wednesday, June 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Delmanor Seniors Residence, 4180 Dundas St. W. “Hear about a scheme that went from opportunity to slavery, from success to despair. And discover the tales of the migrant children and the pivotal role they played in the development of our

country,” event organizers said in a release. “Finally, hear about the ‘unmarked graves’ that lie in Park Lawn Cemetery and the current efforts that are underway to establish an appropriate Memorial Site there.” The event is free, but donations to the British Home Children Advocacy and Research Association will be accepted.

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Toronto parking enforcement officers officially wrote up 273 tickets during the one-week Right 2 Bike campaign that ended Sunday.

Police nab bike-lane blockers during blitz RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com An enforcement blitz by Toronto Police Services yielded an average of 30 additional tickets issued to drivers blocking city bike lanes, although the number could have actually been double or even triple that. Parking enforcement officers officially wrote up 273 tickets during the one-week Right 2 Bike campaign that ended last Sunday. No specific location details were available, but police spokesperson Brian Moniz said the 100 additional uniformed officers, working out to 12 extra personnel per day, were stationed mostly at downtown bike lanes from morning until about10 p.m. He admitted the official numbers pale in comparison to the number of drivers who were able to speed off without receiving, in some cases, a $150 ticket for blocking a bike lane. “It’s a cat-and-mouse game we have to play (with offenders), said Moniz Tuesday. “The biggest challenge is vehicles

S TICKET E L A ON S NOW

where the drivers can just leave and we can’t serve the ticket.” While individual motorists would likely be deterred by the relatively high cost of receiving a ticket, Moniz said by far the biggest violators are taxicabs and delivery trucks. For the latter, he said a ticket is just the cost of doing business. “There is a large contingent of companies with total disregard for bike lanes,” he said. Beyond posting pictures on social media of offending vehicles occupying city bike lanes, whether they’re the painted versions or fully separated, Moniz said there’s not much that can be done since enforcement officers have to physically attach a ticket to a vehicle to make it legal. He hoped the numbers will change when new bylaw changes come into effect allowing for the mailing of traffic tickets. Another enforcement blitz is planned for later this year.

The Artful Palate was a Huge Success! The 7th Annual Artful Palate: A Taste of etobicoke was a huge success! We sold out the event and raised over $11,000. We want to extend a big thank you to our community for supporting Arts Etobicoke and enabling us to continue to provide free, high-quality arts programming in Etobicoke. The event would not have been possible without the generosity of our sponsors. Thank you to John and Margit Cirillo, our lead sponsors, for hosting us at the beautiful Cirillo’s Culinary Academy for the 7th year in a row. One of the highlights for our guests was tasting the signature dishes of 6 Etobicoke chefs from: Cirillo’s Culinary Academy, Bloom Restaurant, Delmanor Prince Edward, Everest Hakka House, Grappa Restaurant, Kothur Indian Cuisine, and Woodbine Entertainment Group. The food was complemented by wine from Colio Estates and beer from Steam Whistle Brewery. We had incredible support from our sponsors behind-the-scenes as well. Thank you to our Community Arts Sponsors— Marilyn A. Cade, CPA, CA, and SANGUINETTI + associates; our Friend of the Arts Sponsors— The Comeback, Donna Cansfield, MYCOR Insurance Solutions, Nation Leagues, SupperWorks, and Village Dental; and our In-Kind Sponsors— Jeremy Sale and Interprovincial Group. We also had over 30 donations to our silent auction, which helped raise the total we reached on the night. In addition to our sponsors we have a remarkable group of volunteers who made the night run smoothly. As a community arts council, Arts Etobicoke is dedicated to bringing art into the daily lives of our community members. Our mission is to support local artists and develop accessible, meaningful opportunities to participate in community arts in Etobicoke. We believe people thrive when art touches their lives. We are only able to accomplish this through the support of our community and the success of events like The Artful Palate. Thank you again to everyone who attended, sponsored, volunteered, donated, and made the event an evening to remember.

A new Public Art Mural for Arts etobicoke W

e are thrilled to announce that Arts etobicoke is embarking on another public art mural project. We received a StreetART grant from the City of Toronto and will be partnering with Amnesty International’s Project: Urban Canvas for our 4th mural celebrating human rights. We have engaged artist BOO to develop a mural based on Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” The mural site is the underpass on Montgomery Road right next to Etobicoke Collegiate Institute (ECI).

Over the summer Arts Etobicoke and artist BOO will be facilitating a series of community consultations about the design of the mural and the community’s interpretation of Article 1. We will be working with students from ECI to gain the youth’s perspective and also offer them opportunities to assist with the preparation and application of the final mural. We are also hoping to involve local seniors in both consultations and mural application. We are so pleased to have the support of Councillor John Campbell and Councillor Justin Di Ciano on this project.

Community Consultation: Tuesday June 21, 2016, 6:30-8:00 pm at Arts Etobicoke 4893 A, Dundas Street West. The consultations are open to the public and we encourage you to join us, share your thoughts on Article Number 1, and the proposed mural design. For more information on the consultations, or the mural email Shira@artsetobicoke.com.

Chief Saunders speaks in Jamestown in wake of shooting TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Jamestown children run, skip rope and kick balls at a community barbecue just down the street from where Candice Rochelle Bobb was shot dead last month. The barbecue chicken on whole wheat buns and fruit served on a warm spring night last week kicked off a three-year, $1.35-million Ontario grant to Rexdale Community Health Centre (RCHC) for its Healthy Kids Challenge program, to serve children up to age 12 in the city’s two northwestern wards, wards 1 and 2 in Etobicoke. Neighbourhoods within those areas are among the city’s most impoverished. “Some people believe this area doesn’t deserve anything good. We want to build equality among all, to develop kids to be the best they can be,” said Althea Martin Risden, RCHC’s health promotion director. Police officers from the area’s 23 Division barbecued, handed out food, chatted with residents and played with the kids. The uniformed officers regu-

larly patrol Jamestown, a few city blocks centred around a Toronto Community Housing neighbourhood of two-storey, three-bedroom tan or brown-brick townhouses built 60 years ago on Jamestown Crescent. One fearful Jamestown mother said she is eager to move. “I’m scared for my kids. I’m scared

for my life,” said the decade-long resident, as her two youngest children played outside her front door under her watchful eye. “There are too much dead people around me. Some of them, I’ve known. “A young man got shot behind my house two years ago. I don’t feel comfortable around here anymore.”

Funding to our health care system will increase by over $1 billion this year.

During the barbecue, Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders talked door-to-door with residents alongside Etobicoke North Councillor Vince Crisanti, and Greg Spearn, Toronto Community Housing’s president and interim CEO. “This is exactly what we need – community partners to help keep our communities safe,” Saunders said. “Law enforcement plays a very active role in keeping communities safe, but we need a combined effort.” Saunders addressed the city’s shock and outrage at Bobb’s murder at a news conference two days after her shooting death. Bobb, 35, was killed May 15 when the car she was in near Jamestown Crescent was sprayed by gunfire. Five months pregnant, Bobb was the only one of four vehicle occupants to be hit. The driver rushed her to Etobicoke General Hospital, where she died, but not before doctors performed an emergency C-section to save her baby, who has since died. Bobb had two other children. During the past decade, areas in north Etobicoke, including Jamestown Crescent, have not been strangers to gun violence. It started in 2005 — the infamous

Year of the Gun, when Toronto’s homicides spiked to 78, a record 52 of them the result of a bullet. “People in this neighbourhood, people across the whole city were outraged by such a violent act,” Toronto police Supt. Ron Taverner, unit commander of the area’s 23 Division, said at the barbecue. Taverner said he and his uniformed officers did a walkabout in Jamestown recently. Fear, and a desperate need to escape the violence, is what they heard. Many Jamestown residents are single mothers raising children. “Many said, ‘We want to get out. We’ve applied to get out. But we can’t get out,’” Taverner said. “Where do they go? All Toronto housing projects are full. We’re doing walkabouts to engage the public more. We tell them about programs. We’re engaging with the community to let them know we’re here to support them.” Violence comes to Jamestown as it has for more than a decade, through armed men dealing drugs, Taverner said. Confronting the violence remains a challenge. Taverner stressed the police need people with information to step forward and share it.

Investing in new and better ways for all Ontarians to get the care they need means: • 700 new doctors and specialists • 35 hospitals currently being renewed, modernized or expanded • $250 million invested in home and community care • $345 million invested to improve wait times and access to care These investments ensure a strong health care system for both today and tomorrow.

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Homicide detectives delving into the May 15 murder of expectant mother Candice Rochelle Bobb will consult with the Crown about the possibility of double murder charges being laid in the case following the death of Bobb’s premature baby Sunday. “The Homicide Squad that’s dealing with this investigation, the one that’s assigned to the original homicide, will be consulting the Crown in regards to it,” a Toronto police spokesperson told The Etobicoke Guardian Monday. At the request of Bobb’s f a m i l y, To ro n t o p o l i c e announced the passing of the baby boy Sunday. He died at about 7:10 p.m., just three weeks after he was delivered via emergency C-section. Bobb was five-months pregnant at the time she was fatally shot. On Sunday, May 15, Bobb was one of four occupants

of a vehicle returning from a men’s league basketball game in the city’s east end, when they were shot at in the Jamestown Crescent and John Garland Boulevard area around 11 p.m. Bobb, who was seated in the back seat, was the only one struck by the hail of bullets that police investigators said targeted the vehicle she was riding in. She was rushed by her friends to nearby Etobicoke General Hospital, where

medical personnel’s attempts to revive her were unsuccessful. Following his birth via emergency C-section, Bobb’s premature baby boy was transferred to a local trauma centre, where, up until last week, he was listed in stable condition. In a statement announci n g h i s d e a t h re l e a s e d through Toronto police last night, Bobb’s family has requested privacy as they mourn. Meanwhile, many Toronto residents took to Twitter to lament the boy’s death. “@TorontoPolice bless his heart. At least he is with his mommy now. The violence in our beautiful city must end,” wrote Jennifer Finjan. No arrests have yet been made in connection with Bobb’s shooting death. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Toronto police Homicide Squad at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

Cops release ‘disturbing’ shooting footage Chief Saunders comments on fight at ECI involving parent

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Toronto police have released “disturbing” surveillance video footage of a brazen daylight shooting that happened in north Etobicoke last week and sent one man to hospital with life-threatening injuries. “As you can see by the video, it’s totally disgusting – it’s bizarre and outrageous,” Supt. Ron Taverner of 23 Division said during a press conference last Thursday at the Toronto Police College in Etobicoke. “To perpetrate an act like this, it’s so inhumane. For normal people, they’re just disgusted at seeing this.” The shooting took place at 9:15 a.m. in the Finch Avenue West and Martin Grove Road area June 1. Police allege that two male suspects, both armed with handguns, approached the victim in a parking lot at 15 Pittsboro Dr. before opening fire on him. As seen in video footage released by police, the first of the two armed suspects shot at the man numerous times at close range before fleeing. Police allege the second suspect, who was likewise armed, also fired several shots at the victim.

During a media briefing at the Toronto Police College last Thursday, police Chief Mark Saunders releases surveillance footage of a shooting that took place in north Etobicoke. Police have identified one of two suspects wanted in connection with the case as 21-year-old Shamaury White.

The victim, who has not been identified, was found on the scene by responding officers suffering with several gunshot wounds. He was rushed to hospital. He was in critical, but stable condition. Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders announced that one of the two suspects wanted in connection with Wednesday’s shooting has been identified as Shamaury White, 21, of Toronto. White is known to police and –

along with his yet-to-be-identified accomplice – is to be considered armed and dangerous. “I don’t know what they’re capable of, so I want Shamaury White to contact a lawyer and turn himself in. “And whoever that person is who was with Shamaury White, he needs to contact a lawyer and turn himself in, too,” Saunders said. Toronto’s top cop spoke out last week against a violent altercation at an Etobicoke high school last month involving several students and a parent. “I can’t support anyone who uses violence as a way to resolve an issue – whether they’re a parent, whether they’re a young man or a young woman,” police Chief Mark Saunders said of the May 10 incident at Etobicoke Collegiate Institute (ECI) that saw charges laid against several youths and a 36-year-old man. “Violence is not the proper discourse to resolve an issue.” According to the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), the melee first started when a fight broke out between two female students – one from ECI, the other from a nonTDSB school – shortly after school ended for the day. “The (principal) and (vice principal) were out there within minutes, and it was actually one of the VPs that physically broke up the fight between the two girls,” TDSB

spokesperson John Caldarone told The Guardian. “It lasted a few minutes before staff were able to intervene,” TDSB spokesperson Ryan Bird added in an emailed statement to The Guardian. “A parent was also present at the time and was involved in an altercation with several other students.” Newstalk 1010 has reported allegations that the parent involved in the altercation threatened a student with a box cutter. Police were then contacted. A Toronto police spokesperson told the Toronto Star Wednesday that the man involved was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon, and at least four youths were charged with assault-related offences. Several students were also reprimanded by the school, Bird confirmed. “We can confirm that a number of students received suspensions as a result of this incident, but for privacy reasons cannot provide further details,” he said. – with files from TorStar News Service

sports

Who’s your pick to win? The 2016 Euro, featuring 24 teams, kicks off later this week. Here are 8 teams we feel have the best chance of winning

1

ermany: Pre-tournament G favourites and reigning World Cup champions, they will be the team to beat in France.

4

I taly: Perennial contenders who have been building a young, solid team.

2

5

elgium: Enter tournament B ranked No. 2 in the world behind No. 1 Argentina. Strong squad but haven’t proved themselves at highest level – yet.

S pain: Have slipped a bit but still have plenty of talent and can be dangerous.

3

F rance: Home country will have advantage of playing in front of tremendous support with very good club. Will be tough to beat.

6

E ngland: Wayne Rooney, Jamie Vardy, Harry Kane give England a chance to do some damage in France.

ONLINE

7

P ortugal: Any team with Cristiano Ronaldo has outside chance of contention.

8

Poland: Gave Germany some problems in qualifying so they could be tricky for opponents.

Visit our Facebook page at InsideToronto and share who think think will take the cup!

There’s plenty of spots for soccer Canada is not involved in Euro 2016 or Copa 100, but you can be sure its biggest city, Toronto, is taking a keen interest in the two highly anticipated continental soccer tournaments. There will be no shortage of pubs, restaurants and culture associations to catch the action in Toronto, particularly for Euro 2016. Little Portugal, anchored by Dundas Street West between Ossington (to the east) and Lansdowne (to the west) avenues, is also home to a growing Brazilian community. For Italy, there’s a double choice, including Little Italy on College Street between Bathurst and Ossington streets; and the Corso Italia area along St. Clair Avenue West between Dufferin Street and Caledonia Road. Both areas also have a Portuguese and Latin presence. For others, like British and Irish pubs, they’re ubiquitous throughout the city and they should be booming with business as England, Wales,

Fans outside the Musket Restaurant in Etobicoke go wild after Germany scores the only goal of the 2014 World Cup final (in extra time) beating Argentina. Germany will now try an add a Euro 2016 title.

Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland all secured spots, leaving only Scotland behind. Another team not represented is Greece, which won Euro 2004, but the Danforth, home to Greektown, won’t be completely silent: Tapas at Embrujo at 97 Danforth Ave. will be cheering on the Spanish side while Dora Keogh’s and Allen’s side by side

on the Danforth (143 and 141 Danforth) will definitely have the Irish games on. For fans of defending World Cup champion Germany, their team’s games will be front and centre at Scarborough’s Blue Danube, 1686 Ellesmere Rd.; Etobicoke’s Musket Restaurant, 40 Advance Rd.; and the Entertainment District’s Wvrst classic German beer hall, 609 King St. W.
