Owner charged in dog mauling A 46-year-old man has been charged after his four large dogs allegedly killed an 81-year-old man’s small dachshund. Toronto police officers responded to calls for an animal complaint Wednesday, March 9 just before noon in Centennial Park. Police said an 81-year-old man was walking his 15-pound dachshund, Dacky, in the park as another man walked four large dogs off-leash. Police said the four large dogs attacked the dachshund. The dachshund died from her
injuries. The younger man then retrieved his four dogs and left. Police want to thank the public for their help in the case. On Tuesday, police arrested Kiriakos (Kirk) Nendos, 46, of Toronto. Nendos is charged with mischief – interfere with lawful enjoyment of property. He appeared in court the day of his arrest. Toronto Animal Services, assisted by police officers, executed a warrant and seized five dogs.

A 50-year-old man who attacked his female partner at a north Etobicoke bank has died, police say. He took his own life, Toronto police 23 Division Staff Sgt. Brian Kay said. Police said the man was armed with a large knife when he entered a Toronto-Dominion Bank near Kipling and Steeles avenues around 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 14. Once inside, the man stabbed a 34-year-old woman repeatedly. She was there doing her banking. “It was a domestic situation, sadly,” Kay said. “Her significant other attacked her at the bank... It was a pretty large knife. Witnesses described it as a butcher knife. It was a pretty vicious attack, from the (bank) video we’ve seen.” Paramedics rushed the woman to Sunnybrook hospital. She is expected to recover from her injuries, Kay said. A few hours later, police responded to a medical call in the Albion and Martin Grove roads area. An injured man was rushed to hospital. “He ended his own life at a friend’s house,” Kay said of the man. Police are not looking for any outstanding suspects.

Di Ciano and Grimes’ petition underscores the “period of intense residential growth” currently being undertaken in Etobicoke-Lakeshore as the major impetus behind the “critical demand” for better transit infrastructure in the area – noting that, by the time construction of residential developments in the Park Lawn and Lake Shore Boulevard West area are complete, there will be approximately 28,000 residents living within just a few square kilometres. “When you look at the development that’s transpired on the Lake Shore over the past 15 years, you’ve essentially taken the equivalent of a Belleville, Ont. and plopped it at the corner of Park Lawn and Lake Shore – and you’ve got only three lanes going into the largest city in the country,” Di Ciano said in an interview with The Guardian on Tuesday. “So we all know what a traffic nightmare it has already become, and that’s not even projecting into the future with the possible development of the Christie site.” The 11-hectare former Mr. Christie bakery site, located at 2150

Lake Shore Blvd., could potentially see significant new development if Mondelez Canada succeeds in its fight at the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) to have the site rezoned for residential uses. “Right now, it’s not really in our hands,” Grimes lamented in an interview with The Guardian. “Council put its foot down and said (the Mr. Christie lands) should be employment lands, but Mondelez is the new owner and they’re fighting for regeneration at the OMB, which is controlled by the province. “So it’s a big unknown what’s going to happen on those acres. God forbid any more residential goes in there – which is definitely not the will of me or of council – because we’re at the tipping point and we need solutions now.” A big piece of that solution, many transit advocates and Etobicoke-
Lakeshore residents agree, would be the establishment of a GO station at Park Lawn. A second petition launched by the Humber Bay Shores Condominium Association (HBSCA) Thursday, March 10, states that “a new GO Train station at Park Lawn Road would assist with relieving congestion and pressures on overburdened transportation infrastructure by providing easily accessible rapid transit for thousands of area residents from Humber Bay Shores, Mimico, and the south Etobicoke communities.” That petition – which can be found at bit.ly/22m69pz – had garnered 528 signatures by Wednesday at noon, with an ultimate goal of 10,000, said Jim Reekie, vice-president of HBSCA and chair of its traffic and transportation committee. “I think the more people that we can get to go to the minister of transportation and say they want a GO stop here, the better...(because) we need a GO stop down here; we need better public transportation,” Reekie said. “We only have two public transportation vehicles in the community (the 501 streetcar and the 145 express bus) that go downtown and that’s it. That’s all we have.” “This is something Toronto should have been doing 25 years ago,” he added. “They planned this community down here, but I don’t think a lot of thought has gone into public transportation or traffic and planning.”
Humber Bay Shores residents aren’t the only ones saying so, either. At a transit town hall hosted by Milczyn and Etobicoke Centre MPP Yvan Baker back on Feb. 3, Minister Del Duca heard from many Etobicoke residents about the dire need for a GO station in the area. In response, Del Duca assured residents that Park Lawn is being considered on an “immediate shortlist” of 50 sites Metrolinx is evaluating as part of its New Station Analysis report. Metrolinx spokesperson Alex Burke confirmed in an email to The Guardian this week that the provincial transit agency is expected to deliver its final recommendations for new GO stations at its June 28 board of directors meeting. “We are currently in the process of updating our analysis with public and stakeholder input,” he wrote, encouraging residents to join the online discussion about a potential Park Lawn station at MetrolinxEngage. com Grimes and Di Ciano hope their petition, too, will help get local voices heard by Metrolinx. “Residents have got to get up and demand it, because if they demand it, they’ll get heard,” Di Ciano said, urging residents to sign the petition. “If they stay complacent, there are other communities that are going to scream louder and they’re going to get it. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.”

Toronto Board of Health proposal to open safe injection sites for drug users in three neighbourhoods is bound to make many residents uncomfortable, but it is the right thing to do. Put quite simply, these sites will save lives and make our entire city safer. That being said, if you live in Parkdale, south Riverdale or the Yonge/Dundas area you are rightly feeling some concern. Residents will be asking themselves if safety in the area will be compromised, if they are at risk of being flooded with heroin and fentanyl addicts looking to shoot up. The answer is: No. The call for the safe injection sites our view has been made in response to a growing number of deaths related to Attend overdoses during the past decade in meetings, Toronto. Those numbers are up 41 per cent learn more from a decade earlier, and in 2013 a shocking 206 people died after injecting drugs. In the face of these numbers, to do nothing would be both irresponsible and immoral on the part of the health department and our city’s leaders. “All lives are important, and nurse-supervised safe injection sites save lives,” said Angela Robertson, executive director of the Queen West-Central Toronto Community Health Centre in Parkdale, one of the proposed safe-injection sites. The South Riverdale CHC and a Toronto Public Health office known as The Works near Yonge and Dundas are also proposed safe injection sites. All three facilities already offer safe injection kits and have experience. They were identified as the best spots for the safe injection sites since they have the busiest needle exchanges in the city. Their staff say the existing services prevent the spread of hepatitis C and HIV among drug users. But more still needs to be done. Many addicts visiting these centres are homeless, and since they often use quickly and in public, most often alone, they are at high risk of a lethal overdose. Providing a safe place for them to do this lessens the chance of death or disease. The board of health will offer further recommendations on the safe injection sites this summer, once community meetings are held in the identified areas. We encourage you to take part in these meetings and learn the facts about this proposal.

Tracking the gas-pump gouge To editor: I enjoyed the cartoon in Feb. 4th’s Guardian where the three grades of gas were “gouge’ “fleece” and “rip-off”. It humourously pointed out that gas prices are only moderately lower when the price of crude oil has declined massively. Why is this? Ontario gasoline is subject to a 10 cent per litre federal excise tax (taxes paid when purchases are made on a specific good) and a 14.7 cent provincial gasoline tax (another “excise” tax).
Then, the gas is additionally subject to a 13 per cent HST. The HST is applied against the gasoline and the 24.7 cents of excise tax. In other words, there is tax on tax. The oil companies use their own money to explore for oil, they pump it out of the ground, refine it and distribute it to market. Yes, you’re being fleeced; and it’s time you understood by whom. The north Etobicoke hospital’s $250-million redevelopment will be comprised of a state-of-the-art, four-storey patient tower as well as a seven-storey ancillary services building, which will replace its existing medical building. Construction of both buildings is expected to begin this spring. William Osler Health System operates Etobicoke General Hospital (EGH), the new Brampton Civic Hospital, as well as the Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness, which will open early next year. Osler is Ontario’s largest community hospital.

department was designed to treat 35,000 patients a year. Currently, it treats double that: 72,000 to 75,000 patients or approximately 220 patients each day. Yet, its emergency department has one of the shortest wait times in the Greater Toronto Area. Some 90 per cent of its patients are seen within one to 1.1 hours, well above the provincial average of 3.1 hours, said Dr. Naveed Mohammad, Osler’s vicepresident of medical affairs, and an emergency department physician who practises at Etobicoke General and Brampton Civic’s emergency departments. Mohammad is also the Central West LHIN’s (Local Health Integration Network) emergency medicine lead. “We’re used to working in a place with not that many rooms and high volumes,” Mohammad said. “The Etobicoke staff has to be given credit for having a record time
in the province for moving patients through our emergency department.” Mohammad called EGH’s redevelopment a “huge morale boost” for staff and patients alike. “It will be a roomier, brighter building. There will be the new tower. The new emergency department will not only add beds, but give us a new ICU and CCU, with imaging and diagnostics in much closer proximity,” he said. “I think it will make a huge difference.” In May, officials expect to name Osler’s preferred proponent to design, build, finance and maintain its new ancillary services building. It is expected to open in summer 2018. That building will house outpatient programs and services, including diabetes care, and a satellite kidney dialysis unit to serve Etobicoke patients who currently travel to Brampton Civic for treatment.

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.
Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly!
