Pearson quickly outgrowing its GTA footprint

MOM’S THE WORD

Airport to reach its passenger capacity within the next 30 years RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The Union Pearson (UP) Express will soon enter service and offer a high-speed travel option to the airport, but it’s still not nearly enough to address current congestion levels. That’s one of the early conclusions of a study by consulting firm McKinsey and Company on future planning options for Toronto Pearson International Airport which will reach its pas-

senger capacity within three decades. McKinsey planning director Bruce Simpson presented the study’s preliminary findings as part of a panel discussion at the Toronto Region Board of Trade (TRBOT) Monday on prospects for Pearson’s long-term future, which includes the need to have reliable mass transportation options to the airport. Father John Redmond grad designs Canada 150 logo Ariana Mari Cuvin’s design beat out 300 others The Canadian government has chosen a recent Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School student’s design as its official Canada 150 logo. Ariana Mari Cuvin’s winning logo depicts a series of different-coloured diamonds in the shape of a maple leaf. It “evokes a sense of pride, unity and celebration and reflects Canada as a diverse nation with a rich past and a promising future,” the federal government said in a statement. The Harper government has launched a $4-million national ad campaign celebrating the Fathers of Confederation and a country that has become “strong, proud and free” more than two years in advance of Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017. Cuvin, 19, won the Canada 150 logo design contest from a nation-wide field of more than 300 entrants. The second year Global Business and Digital Arts student at the University of Waterloo said she chose the maple leaf because it is Canada’s “most iconic symbol.” The base of the leaf is four red-coloured diamonds,

meant to represent the four provinces that joined Confederation in 1867 – Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. ‘TOGETHERNESS’ The 13 shapes forming the leaf represent “our togetherness as a country,” Cuvin said. “The multi-coloured iteration gives a feeling of diversity while the red one shows pride and unity.” Last year, Cuvin worked as a graphic design intern for four months at Physicalytics Inc.

The Filipino Centre of Toronto awarded her the Outstanding Student Award (High School). It is awarded to Filipino-Canadian students who demonstrated academic excellence and been active volunteers in his or her community. Father John Redmond awarded her the Redmond Letter Award, presented to students who have made an outstanding contribution to co-curricular programs at the north Etobicoke high school. Cuvin graduated high school as an Ontario Scholar.

for them, so I asked them if I should abandon the book and move on to something different, Ursini said of reading Hana’s Suitcase to her students. “But they insisted I keep reading – said they’d never had a story touch them so deeply. Knowing George Brady ultimately settled in Toronto, Ursini went home that night and proceeded to call every G. Brady she could find, hoping to convince him to speak to her students. Three days later, Brady called back and agreed to come to the school this week and share his family’s story with 370 students from St. Ambrose, as well as those from nearby Christ the King and Father John Redmond.

Accompanied by his daughter, Lara Hana Brady, the 87-year-old Holocaust survivor told the students during an assembly on Monday about his and his sister Hana’s happy childhood growing up in the small town of Nove Mesto in Czechoslovakia – and of the day life as they knew it came to an end. “In March 1939, the Na z i s m a rc h e d i n ( t o Czechoslovakia) and from then on, our lives changed completely, he said, noting that he and Hana were barred from attending school, and that the family was forced to wear the yellow Star of David on their clothes to mark them as Jewish. By 1941, both of Brady’s parents had been arrested by the Gestapo and sent to concen-

tration camps. By 1942, both would end up at Auschwitz, where, unbeknownst to their children, they were killed just three months apart. Meanwhile, Brady – who was just 14 at the time – and his sister Hana, 11, went to live with their Catholic uncle and aunt for a short time, before being shipped off themselves to Terezin concentration camp in May 1942. “The moment we got to Terezin, we were split – my sister went to a girls’ home and I went to a boys’ home, Brady said, noting that he spent two-and-a-half cold and hungry years living in a crowded room with more than a dozen other boys there, before being transported to Auschwitz in September 1944.

As people were herded off the train in Auschwitz, they approached a Nazi soldier who directed them to his left or to his right, Brady recalled. “When you go to the right, you live, he said. “But when he showed you to the left, you were sent to the gas chamber. Brady was fortunately sent to the guard’s right, and managed to survive the next four months at the notorious death camp by lying about his age and sneaking onto a work detail at an Auschwitz satellite camp. “Then one day, it was Jan. 17 (1945), they assembled us and they told us we will walk to Germany, because they didn’t want anyone to see what they did to us. Still bent on survival, Brady, then 17, escaped from that death march, too – travelling by foot, train and hitched rides through Poland, Russia and Hungary back to his uncle and aunt’s home in Nove Mesto. “I was really happy that I survived and they were happy to see me, but then I found out my parents were dead, so it was quite an incredible shock, he said, noting that months later, he learned his sister was sent to the gas chamber in Auschwitz. As a tribute to Hana, Brady named his Canadian-born daughter Lara Hana, in memory of a brave little girl whose suitcase has touched so many lives around the world – including those of the 24 children in Ursini’s sixth grade classroom at St. Ambrose. Good-news Tory mayoralty will soon have to shift gears to talk austerity

A

t the start of the whirling vortex of chaos (otherwise known as the May meeting of Toronto council) next year’s budget seems very far off. It is not, of course. While council and the city deal with the ramifications of open-season on food trucks, a new city manager, the quest for a just taxi license and gender balance on the Toronto Transit Commission, the city’s 2016 budget looms large – larger than is typical, in fact, thanks to the odd way that council decided to balance the 2015 budget. This was in March, when council approved a 2.75 per cent property tax increase for homeowners, and filled a $60-million shortfall by effectively borrowing from the city’s own capital financing capacity

david nickle the city in future years. Services were generally sustained or even enhanced, taxpayers were mollified with a rateof-inflation increase, and the pain, Mayor John Tory promised, would come later. Tory also promised to let Toronto know in the coming weeks exactly how he would deal with the 2016 gap between what it costs to run the city as it stands, and the diminishing amount of money actually available to the city. Although Tory would not use the words, it all suggested that in 2016, Torontonians would be looking at some form of service cuts. Given that, it’s under-

standable that Tory has not yet made good on that one promise, to explain how he’ll balance things. So far, the Tory mayoralty has been a good-news affair. His announcements generally aren’t about telling people what they can’t have, but what he will provide: improved traffic movement, jobs for underprivileged youth, technological innovation. Very soon, our mayor is going to have to start talking about more difficult things: initially, one suspects, strategies for cutting waste in the city’s administrative bureaucracy, but as the process carries on, cuts and fee increases that will impact the lives of constituents. Tory has so far avoided talking about fees very much, effectively ruling out the operationally sensi-

tive but politically difficult application of “revenue tools” such as road tolls and consumption taxes. Without a willingness to increase or enact those things, the city is left with only one option: austerity. The city doesn’t have a terrible record on measured austerity, but it doesn’t have a great one either. In general, Toronto residents seem to like their services and react with a certain amount of organized pique when they are threatened When the matter finally comes up, it will show even a rough-and-tumble council meeting such as this week’s for the honeymoon that it in fact is. Explore flower meanings for Mother’s Day While Valentine’s Day brings in the biggest profits for florists, the award for most flowers sold on a single day goes to Mother’s Day. Flowers are imported from all over the world to meet the demand. While roses are a popular choice for both Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, anyone who has purchased a bouquet knows they can be expensive. Red roses may signify love (and pink roses signify admiration and appreciation), but just about any other flower can also represent the strong emotions felt for mom — and at a much more affordable cost. When visiting the florist to have a bouquet or arrangement of flowers assembled for Mother’s Day, consider mixing and matching some other flowers for an arrangement with flair and originality that mom will love.

DAHLIAS Named after Anders Dahl, a Swedish botanist, these flowers are native to Mexico but actually prefer cooler growing conditions. Dahlias come in all sizes, from small blooms of a few inches to much larger blossoms that may be a foot in width. They are related to the sunflower, daisy and chrysanthemum. The dahlia usually is not a scented flower, which may work for people who are especially sensitive to scented blooms.

CHRYSANTHEMUMS Also known as mums, chrysanthemums are versatile flowers that symbolize optimism, joy, fidelity and love. Although mums are traditionally yellow, they can also be white, red and other hybrid hues.

PEONIES Peonies are herbaceous perennial plants that produce large, often fragrant flowers ranging in colour from red to white. Peonies are highly prized by Eastern cultures, and in China they are known as the “flower of riches and honour.”

CARNATIONS Carnations have the scientific name of Dianthus, which means “flowers of God.” Carnations are particularly coveted because they can last long after being cut, which makes them popular in floral arrangements. Dark red carnations are said to convey affection and deep love, while white means remembrance, pink means gratitude and yellow means cheerfulness. Because of their popularity, carnations are often easily affordable.

COLUMBINE Columbine is native to North America, Asia and Europe. It has lacy-looking leaves and bellshaped flowers. While columbines are tradition-

red flowers can add drama to any floral arrangement. Other popular flower choices include: camellias, meaning graciousness; daffodils, meaning chivalry; gardenias, meaning joy; hydrangeas, mean perseverance, irises, meaning inspiration; daisies, meaning innocence and sunflowers meaning adoration. The rose may be traditional, but gifting mom with a variety flowers may add visual appeal and affordability to arrangements. If arrangements aren’t in the cards, gift her with a potted plant she can enjoy all summer long.

ally used as garden plants to attract hummingbirds, a few blooms added to a floral arrangement can brighten up the design.

POPPIES Low-maintenance and usually easy to grow, poppies’ vivid red colour and large blooms add to their aesthetic appeal.

CARDINALS Cardinals are long, tubular flowers that grow wild throughout North America. Tall and dramatic, these

Show you care this Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is the one day each year when men, women and children across the country gather to honour the mothers in their lives. Though it can be challenging to find new and unique ways to display your affection for Mom on Mother’s Day, rest assured that sometimes the simplest concepts are the ones mothers most appreciate. This year, look no further than the following ideas for some inspiration as you aim to make this Mother’s Day as special as possible for the mother or mothers in your life. Give the gift of sweet treats. What better way to highlight mom’s sweetness than with some delicious treats made just for her? Whether you decide to whip up some homemade confections in the kitchen or visit a nearby store for something decadent, mom will no doubt appreciate the chance to indulge on her big day. Make a meal to remember. Mom deserves a night off from dinner detail, and while dining out is an option, a homemade meal may come across as more intimate and heartfelt. Thanks to kitchen appliances that make it easier than ever to prepare gourmet meals at home, you can now make restaurant-style meals in your kitchen without sacrificing restaurant-quality taste. all the cleanup. While mom waits for dinner to be served, a soothing cup of tea can set the tone for a relaxing evening. Plan a Mother’s Day picnic. Busy moms may look forward to a break from the bustle of daily routines. An afternoon picnicking outdoors can be the ideal way to enjoy a special Mother’s Day. Parents striking against Ontario’s new sex education curriculum pulled hundreds of students out of schools in Scarborough, East York and Etobicoke, Toronto’s public school board said. The first day of a declared week-long strike saw only around 130 students, about 10 per cent, attend Thorncliffe Park Public School, one of the city’s largest. Some 1,220 children were absent from Thorncliffe, in a campaign against the planned introduction of updated Health and Physical Education lessons in September. A Facebook group declared the strike would last all week, and encouraged parents to

download letters to send to schools, explaining they consider the curriculum “ageinappropriate” and in conflict with their values. “We believe that it is our responsibility to teach these values to our children and have the greatest authority over how and when such sensitive topics are being introduced to our children,” the letter says. In Scarborough, just over 700 children did not attend Cornell Junior Public School, near Markham and Scarborough Golf Club roads, though 150 students arrived as usual. Board officials noted absences were heavy in some areas of the city, including Thorncliffe, the Kingsview Village area in Etobicoke, and some parts of Scarborough. Schools were working to confirm the reasons for absences, since though many parents handed let-

ters to principals and teachers in advance, others spoke to them without sending a letter. “When a child is not in school, we’re expecting a parent to call and say why,” said Shari Schwartz-Maltz, a board spokesperson. School principals, meanwhile, are doing their best to address “misconceptions” about the curriculum, Schwartz-Maltz said. “Parents can protest as they wish but we’d like the kids to come back to school,” she said. Parent groups opposed to the new plan want the province to restart consultations on the curriculum, but Education Minister Liz Sandals has said the update will be introduced as planned. - Mike Adler

Little Free Library opens in Thompson Orchard Books for young boys most in need at take a book, leave a book library TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The small purple house with gold-gilded front door, window frames and roof stands out on Orchard Crescent. For its spectacular design and for its size. It is not much bigger than a bird house. Mary Ann Gringras officially unveiled one of the latest Little Free Libraries Tuesday afternoon just steps outside her front door in the Thompson Orchard neighbourhood near Bloor Street West and Royal York Road. It stands about five feet tall. It holds approximately 100 books, lined two deep on two shelves. There’s an array of titles. T h e Vi n t a g e Bra d b u r y . Wedding Night by Sophie Kinsella. Life Strategies by

Phillip C. McGraw PhD. Even Star Wars: I Want to be a Jedi. The Little Free Library is based on the principle: take a book, leave a book. It is meant to be a gathering place for friends and neighbours to share their favourite books. A rustic bench is located next to the library to encourage reading and meeting neighbours. “It’s a really interesting idea, said Gringras, a librarian and mother of four young children ages from infancy to eight. “I stumbled across one on St. Georges (Road) and thought, ‘we need to have one south of Bloor.’ Gringras sourced her Little Free Library on Craigslist. It had been an end table decorated like a doll house. Neighbourhood children repainted it. A builder down

the street professionally installed it on the sidewalkless street. Gringras’ library accepts books of all kinds for adults and children. But it is espe-

cially in need of books for boys aged eight to 11, she said. “I just filled it with books for boys a week ago and they’re already gone, Gringras said.

“As houses get flipped and sold in the neighbourhood, sometimes you find some good stuff. Gringras populates the library, as does a neighbour. The organization Book Ride has also donated “a ton of books, Gringras said. Neighbours drop books off at her front door. Gringras’ library is part of the Little Free Library project. Wisconsin men Todd Bol and Rick Brooks started the Little Free Library movement in 2009. Bol brought experience as a creative craftsman. Brooks is a youth and community development educators with a background in social marketing. Bol built a model of a oneroom schoolhouse as a tribute to his mother, a former school teacher who loved reading, and installed it on a post in his front yard. He built more and more for friends and neighbours.

It took off. Little Free Libraries grew to spread tiny libraries, literacy and a love of reading across the United States and beyond. At Thompson Orchard’s Little Library launch, Little Italy author Dayle Furlong read from and donated copies of her recently released latest novel, Saltwater Cowboys, about miners and workingclass Canadians who make their way from Newfoundland to work in a gold mine in the wilds of northern Alberta. “It’s exciting and fun, Furlong said of the Little Free Library, to which she also donated copies of her poetry volume, Open Slowly. Gringras said she is hoping her Thompson Orchard Little Library “makes the map on the website www.littlefreelibrary.org Gringras’ Little Library is registered with charter number 20109.

oday, many people refer to the entire area of Etobicoke north of Hwy. 401 as Rexdale. In reality, Rexdale was the name of the very first of many post-war subdivisions built in northern Etobicoke. Rex Wesley Heslop was the visionary developer who gave this first subdivision his name and left an indelible mark on this part of Etobicoke. He s l o p w a s b o r n i n Etobicoke, but was working in Northern Ontario as a gold prospector when an injury forced him to return – broke – in 1947. Without missing a beat, he established Rex Heslop Homes Limited and built 400 homes in Alderwood, west of Brown’s Line. In 1951, Heslop turned his attention to the vacant farmland north of the planned Toronto By-pass, Hwy. 401. Malton’s aircraft industry was expanding and he knew that their

east side of Islington Avenue, north of Allenby Avenue – the 4th shopping centre built in Toronto. Heslop next built the “New Rexdale” subdivision, west of Islington Avenue, north of Rexdale Boulevard, followed by the “Sunnydale” subdivision, west of Kipling Avenue. Eventually Heslop’s developments included 2,000 homes and 70 businesses on 1,200 acres, and he was a millionaire. Soon other developers were building more subdivisions north of the 401, including Kipling Heights, West Humber Estates and The Elms. In 1956, Heslop moved on to develop the even-larger Delrex subdivision in Georgetown. Heslop bought the 100 acre Wilbert Wardlaw farm on the east side of Islington Avenue, opening his office in the old farmhouse seen in this photo, and built houses on the remainder of the property. On April 24, 1952, he met with 40 employees of the AV Roe Aircraft Company who each agreed to buy a home on Allenby Avenue – the first 40 homes sold in Rexdale. The houses were all bungalows or one-and-a half storeys, and were made of brick or prefabricated steel-reinforced concrete panels. By September 1953, 18 industries had bought lots, primarily west of Kipling Avenue. Within just a few years, the Rexdale industrial area was the largest in the township and Reeve Bev Lewis described the deal they made with Heslop as “the salvation of Etobicoke.” Rexdale Plaza opened in 1956 on the

An Air Canada plane makes its final approach to Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Experts urge planners to look to international examples on how to expand Pearson airport’s capacity >>>from page 1 one million cars from the street during its first year of operation, 2.5 million after two years, Simpson said even if UP hits those targets – by operating at full-capacity with around 800 peak-hour riders between Union Station and Pearson every day – it would still only represent eight per cent of total airport passengers. “The other 92 per cent are still on the road, and that’s not going to make your drive to Pearson a whole lot better,” he said. Beyond UP, Simpson said future transit improvements like SmartTrack and GO Transit rail expansion need to take into account travel to the airport and look to cities like London, UK and Hong Kong for inspiration. “We need other answers (beyond UP) and for all the other plans out there, they need to think about the last mile to the airport,” he said. Simpson was part of a moderated panel of global transportation experts sharing ideas over the course of a couple of hours at TRBOT on how to boost Pearson’s passenger capacity over the next 30 years regionally and further strengthen its status as a global travel hub. The event was organized by the Toronto chapter of the Urban Land Institute (ULI). Pearson’s modest begin-

nings date back to the 1970s when it averaged just 10.5 million passengers a year flying out of two terminals. It now has an additional terminal and nearly 40 million passengers per year, and the second highest percentage of international travelers in North America. Howard Eng, president and CEO of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority which runs Pearson’s operations, attributed the rise to global finance acting as an economic driver for the Toronto region. “The world is changing, it’s changing fast,” Eng said. “Economic development has now pushed us to the point the airport has to grow to serve the needs of the region.” Eng said Pearson recorded nearly a seven per cent increase in passenger volumes last year alone, with the rise credited predominantly to international travel. At this rate of increase even conservative projections have Pearson at 64 million annual passengers within 20 years. Thomas Bosco from the New York and New Jersey Port Authority which runs five airports including JFK and LaGuardia as well as bridge and tunnel connections between the two U.S. states, said operations were divided into specialized functions, with smaller airports serving particular needs.

LaGuardia for example serves as the primary destination shorter flight and for convenient entry into Manhattan while JFK handles the bulk of international travel. Nor mand Boivin, a Montrealer who has served as the chief operating officer for Heathrow Airport for four years admitted the privately run UK airport is woefully underserving its passengers. Even with nearly 95 million passengers per year the airport is still operating below its capacity and Boivin admitted competitors like Dubai International Airport have now passed Heathrow when it comes to travel volumes. “Dubai is eating our lunch,” Boivin said. Boivin said the future for one of the world’s busiest airports lies in constructing a third runway at a cost of 17 billion pounds which would also require substantial transformation the equivalent of Toronto eliminating the Hwys. 427/409 and 401 ramps to the airport and subsuming the municipality of Milton. He urged Toronto not do as London has “planning the future for 30 years” but come up with a decisive and wellthought out solution to deal with future demand. It’s 84 kilometres long – stretching from the edge of Brampton to the mouth of the Rouge River – and this spring and summer, the Pan Am Path will wind past rivers, lake and streams showcasing both Toronto’s natural beauty and the creative spirit of the city’s artists. The path follows the Humber River through the central waterfront, up the Don River and Tailor Creek and through Scarborough to Orton Park, Morningside Park and finally through Port Union to Rouge Beach and, eventually, with money from the City of Toronto and the Toronto Foundation, it will be connected. This spring and summer, it will be home to the Pan Am Path Art Relay, running from May 16 to Aug. 15, moving a relay of art installations and events along the path. “It’s a roving, rolling excitement along the trail,” said event organizer Devon Orstrom. “We’ve been really conscious about that, making sure we bring the partners together to have that rich network across the city.” The schedule includes: n On May 16, the Spring! Launch event will take place at the University of GuelphHumber and the Centre for Urban Ecology from 1 to 5 p.m. with various programs including a bicycle-powered music festival. n On May 23, the Pine Point Park and Arena will launch Freedom Fridayz from 1 to 7 p.m. The event will showcase visual art, spoken word/poetry, hip hop, theatre, music, dance and other forms of expression. n On May 30, Activate!

available medical research and her first-hand care experience. Her early days as a caregiver were spent taking care of her grandfather who had vascular dementia, the second most common form of dementia, caused by a blockage or reduction in the blood flow to the brain. She realized she was a good caregiver and went to college and then began working with people with dementia, and

has picked up more skills along the way. She has three points she wants people to hear when she will speak at the show. She wants caregivers to recognize the need to take care of themselves, particularly if they’re going to be in it for the long-haul; caregivers need to understand what is happening to the people they are caring for; and that having the right skills to care for someone does matter. Of the last point, she said, it’s not enough to want to do something. Caregivers need to know how to do what they need to do. They will need to learn those skills. Snow said it’s easy to think dementia is memory loss, but it’s actually more severe than that. “It’s hard to picture what all that means unless somebody helps you through that,” she said. “Most individuals don’t get that kind of support and skill and knowledge building that they actually need to do this. It’s like a marathon race.” Two-thirds of caregivers are women, she said, and it could be a spouse or child of the person, or even a friend. For each, the dynamics are different, she said.

“With friends, it’s really different. There comes a point in the relationship where it’s ‘Ooh, it’s getting way intense,’” she said. It will start with helping with groceries, doing banking and cleaning the house and other minor errands. “And then, before this is all over, there’s going to be all kinds of personal care and intimate care, getting in and out of bed, and on and off a toilet. Nobody is really thinking that when they’re thinking its memory problems.” She said care giving is more than any one person can do and they need to learn how to ask for help. “Do not try to do this alone. I don’t care how much you love somebody. It’s not about love. This thing will take you down if you try to do it alone,” she said. Along with Snow, health and nutrition expert Rose Reisman will also be a guest speaker at The Caregiver Show. It takes place in the Athletics Wellness Centre at Centennial College’s Progress Campus, 941 Progress Ave. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Home maintenance tips for first-time buyers Purchasing a home for the first time is an experience no one forgets – so don’t let yourself get overwhelmed. With so much to consider beyond the mortgage payments, inspections, and the property taxes, many first-time buyers overlook important maintenance tasks that should also be done right away for energy efficiency and to save money in the long run. Many first-time homebuyers are intimidated by home maintenance and are often unaware of how simple it can be. Learning how to perform routine upkeep can help save from unexpected and costly repairs down the road, and even increase your home’s resale value. These simple tips can help manage the maintenance during the first year of home ownership: • Get your ducts cleaned – The average duct cleaning removes approximately five pounds of dust and debris. Hire professionals for this with your builder to see if a duct cleaning is injob, especially if the previous owners had pets cluded at closing. or if the house has recently been renovated. If • Seal leaks around windows and doors – Up you’re moving into a brand new home, check to 30 per cent of heating and cooling costs in a

• Replace or wash furnace filters – This allows your air conditioner and furnace systems to run more efficiently. Clogged filters mean that motors must work harder and use more energy. It’s best to replace or wash filters every three months, so add quarterly reminders to your calendar so you don’t forget. • Have your furnace inspected – Have a licensed technician inspect your furnace since there’s no guarantee that previous owners performed routine maintenance. Because your air conditioning system works hand-in-hand with your furnace, it’s important to make sure both are working safely and efficiently, especially before the heat spikes. • Hire qualified contractors – Don’t try to save money by making improvements and repairs you aren’t qualified to make. It’s always best to home can occur due to poorly fitted windows hire professionals to do work you’re not sure and doors. Add caulking or sealing if needed to about to avoid injuries and keep your home in reduce air leaks. If the caulking is old, strip it off top condition. —www.newscanada.com and re-caulk.

140 BATHURST #100

Fantastic light filled one bedroom unit in the highly desirable King/Queen West! Freshly decorated with separate entry way, 9Ft ceilings, great living space, parking and two lockers included. Steps from nightlife and restaurants on King St. Steps To The TTC.

220 BURNHAMTHORPE RD WEST #2806 Bright and spacious sunlit unit with South views of the lake. One bedroom, two washrooms, updated kitchen and parking included. Steps to restaurants, entertainment and Square One. Easy access to 401 and transit.

New Tridel condos come with a view in every direction Tridel is bringing new home options to the neighbourhood with their new condominium development situated at Bloor and Islington, just steps from the subway. Islington Terrace will be a community of three buildings, one of which is the tallest in the neighbourhood at 45 storeys high. With a long list of features that would satify most homebuyers’ wish lists, it’s hard to believe the reasonable prices. For $350,000, a home in downtown Toronto is usually a cramped one-bedroom. For the same price at Islington Terrace, homebuyers can stretch out in a spacious two-bedroom with plenty of perks. The community consists of 50,000 sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor amenities, including a swimming pool, party room, indoor basketball court, water feature, children’s play area and much more. From the south side of the building, expect an amazing view of the lake. The north faces a

gorgeous golf course for another beautiful view. If you feel like going out, take the subway. Islington station is steps away and only 20 minutes from downtown Toronto. Mississauga is just one bus ride away. Even better, stay near your new home. The condos are conveniently located between Islington Village, which is full of European boutiques, the Kingsway neighbourhood, which has high-end restaurants and shops, and Bloor West Village. First-time homebuyers can afford to live in luxury without the high price tags of the city. The condos are also perfect for small families looking for a child-friendly home in a safe neighbourhood. Developer Tridel will be holding a grand opening on May 23 at their new Presentation Centre at 3326 Bloor St. W. beside the Sun Life Financial Centre. Visitors will be able to experience what Islington Terrace will have to offer firsthand. For more information, visit tridel.com or call 416-645-8862.

Metrolinx will hold a public meeting early next week to share its plan for separating the Davenport Diamond rail crossing. It’s already been reported Metrolinx will launch an Environmental Assessment (EA) in late summer for building an overpass to elevate GO Transit rail service over CP Rail freight train traffic which currently meets at the crossing. The meeting takes place Tuesday, May 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Davenport Perth Neighbourhood Centre. Fo r m o re i n f o r m a t i o n visit www.metrolinx.com/ RERDavenport

Breaking news: a public official was spotted riding the TTC. That may not seem newsworthy, particularly since the official in question is TTC CEO Andy Byford, who makes

TO in TRANSIT regular use of the Better Way, doesn’t own a car and has never had a driver’s licence. But after a Reddit Toronto user spotted Byford on the subway speaking to riders last Friday – stopping even to pick up some trash off the subway floor – it was enough to spawn a message thread with dozens of comments praising the TTC’s top official.

at UNION SUBWAY nearly done wplatform

The TTC announced it will complete construction of the second subway platform at Union Station in coming weeks. The station was closed again last weekend as work crews completed final touches to the new Yonge line platform ahead of the Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. It will be the last time the station is closed before the Games begin in July due to the construction. The platform actually opened last year, but in an unfinished state. Its final design includes an immense “art wall”.

‘Line Six’ deep-sixed because of lack of ridership RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Line Six, the crowdfunded transit enterprise failed not because of concerns of its legality, but a lack of ticket sales, one of its co-founders confirmed this week. In an exclusive interview with Metroland Media Toronto, Brett Chang talked about the failure of Line Six to convince commuters it could be a viable transportation alternative to the TTC despite the crush of enthusiasm following its launch as a pilot service. Chang, along with business partner Taylor Scollon, have moved on from Line Six to launch a new website www.InTouchGov.com, which solicits feedback and ratings from users across various categories of TTC service. Since InTouchGov launched a few days ago with little fanfare, more than 80 users have registered feedback. Chang said he hopes there’s eventually enough data to create a useful resource similar to the restaurant ratings website Yelp! for rating transit service.

Of his previous venture, Chang said a mix of “business and regulatory” concerns were the reasons for the demise of Line Six, although he didn’t rule out reviving the service in the future. “Toronto is not a good place for this, it’s a tough environment,” said Chang this week. “I don’t want to say it’s dead, it could come back. I think there’s room for a service like that. But not in the incarnation we intended.” No justification to continue Despite generating more than $2,500 in online donations for a chartered bus service between Liberty Village and Union Station during the one-week pilot from Oct. 6 to 10, 2014, Chang said subsequent ticket sales and the crush of subsequent media attention wasn’t sufficient enough to justify plans to continue the service, which was supposed to have re-launched in January. He said just 25 trip passes were sold in total for the service at around $200 each for a guaranteed seat on the bus for a month, dubbed the

Liberty Village Express (LVE), whose route was selected via online voting from users. In addition to a seat, riders were also entitled to a free newspaper, coffee and access to Wi-Fi. Chang said the disappointing sales combined with concerns of

the service’s legality convinced he and Scollon to pull the plug on Line Six. Three days before its planned re-launch, a short statement was posted on the group’s website, which indicated Line Six wouldn’t resume until questions of its legal standing

were resolved. Chang denied a legal action was launched against Line Six by the TTC or any other public transit agency, as was rumoured, saying the decision to shutter the service was made following advice from the group’s own legal counsel. “There was no contact made to us by the TTC or the city,” he said. “But in order to operate we would have needed some kind of legal strategy and had to have had an argument ready in case there were objections. We talked to our lawyers and they advised us to hold back.” With its legal status open to challenge, Chang said any potential investors would have balked at providing start-up funds meaning Line Six’s day-to-day expenses would have to come from ticket sales. But the low demand was simply not enough to sustain the service. “It was an interesting period and we learned a lot from it and we’re applying the lessons we learned to our new project,” he said.

Reduced TTC fares for seniors shelved until Presto fare debate The TTC’s board of directors may have applied the brakes to a proposal to offer seniors reduced fares, but last week’s vote at city hall all but ensures the issue will be revisited in the future. At its monthly meeting, the board voted by majority to support fellow TTC commissioner and Councillor Vince Crisanti’s request to have staff study the feasibility of offering seniors $1 fares in non-rush hour periods as part of a pilot project. Crisanti’s motion to the board asked for TTC staff to study the idea and issue a report in the future. But the board also opted to support Councillor John Campbell’s

amendment to the Crisanti motion by issuing the advice through a briefing note, which means whatever the eventual recommendation, the matter can’t be voted on further. The board also opted to support – again by majority – a motion from citizen member Alan Heisey to incorporate study of reduced senior fares within a report to be presented in October, which will provide a wider assortment of options for fare reductions beyond age once the Presto card becomes more widely available within the TTC. “We’ve already had findings on seniors and now it’s going to come back in the context of all the fare options,” said TTC Chair Josh Colle following the vote Wednesday, April 29. “It doesn’t make sense to have it as a standalone item when we have a fares report coming back based on income, distance, all of those things will be part of that assessment.” Colle disagreed a precedent was set when the TTC made fares free for all children 12 and under – which was announced by himself and Mayor John Tory to great fanfare at the start of the year – encouraging other groups to seek their own fare rebates. He said with wider implementation of the p re - l o a d a b l e Pre s t o fare card, to be in place throughout the TTC by the end of 2016, more options were now open to debate. “The real trigger point is Presto and then it’s fair to have all of these conversations,” he said. “It’s more viable to look at options. Whether it’s the will of the commission or council, that’s why we need the study done.” A 2013 staff report by the TTC studying lower fares found it would cost

i

the commission at least $22 million to offer free fares in off-peak hours and CEO Andy Byford estimated that amount would be cut in half if $1 fares were offered. Byford promised the issue would be revisited in the October report whose recommendations must eventually be approved by Toronto council to become reality. “The point the board is making is discounted fares for seniors need to be seen within the wider context of the fare equity strategy the city is looking at,” Byford said. The board’s decision came following a several deputations from members of the advocacy group TTCriders, which bussed in about 100 members of the Ontario Chinese Seniors Association to watch the proceedings. TTCriders Executive Director Jessica Bell asked the board to not only consider offering $1 fares to seniors, but to extend the discount to any individual making under $22,000 a year and to offer the discount at all times. Bell also asked the board to give Ontario Works and Disability recipients the opportunity to ride for no charge at all, but warned there should be no cuts to service as a result. “We feel these demands would really help make the TTC more affordable,” said Bell during her deputation. Denzil Minnan-Wong voted against the proposal but supported looking at seniors fares within the context of Presto. He said it was all well and good to ask for free fares, but in the end the money would have to come from somewhere. “I do have a concern that people want a lot of things, but no one’s prepared to have a discussion on how to pay for it,” he said.

Police officers cleared by SIU in single-vehicle collision Man’s head injuries occurred when vehicle hit wall: report Ontario’s police watchdog has cleared Toronto police officers in a case of a man who suffered head injuries after the Chevrolet SUV in which he was a passenger sped through a red light and struck a school wall in Jamestown last June. The Special Investigations Unit’s (SIU) director Tony Loparco concluded “it is clear that the officers bear no criminal responsibility as far as the collision is concerned” in a statement issued Tuesday. The 18-year-old was a passenger in a vehicle driven the wrong way on Jamestown

Crescent around 8 p.m. last June 12. Officers parked near Jamestown Crescent and John Garland Boulevard waved the driver to pull over. Instead, the vehicle accelerated and sped past the officers, the SIU statement said. The driver turned right onto John Garland Boulevard and through a red light at the intersection at Martin Grove Road. The driver attempted a sharp left turn onto Four Leaf Drive and lost control, smashing through a fence and striking a school wall. Officers arrived at the collision and saw the 18-year-old run. Officers apprehended and handcuffed the man. When he appeared to be losing consciousness, an ambulance was called and he was taken to hospital. Loparco said the weight of the evidence suggested “the man’s head injuries occurred

when he slammed into the windshield as the SUV collided with the school wall.” Police arrested the vehicle’s driver. “At the critical moment of the collision, the evidence suggests that the officers were in and around the intersection of John Garland Boulevard and Martin Grove Road, a fair distance behind the SUV, dismissing any suggestion that they contributed to the accident by recklessly pressuring the driver of the SUV,” Loparco said in the statement. Loparco said the incident lasted “less than a kilometre and no more than a minute or two”. Also, the driving officer drove at a reasonable speed and was never closer than 100 to 200 metres from the SUV during the engagement.

Insomnia is becoming a major health problem for many people. In shutting out shut-eye in favour of productivity, have we created an insomnia culture?More and more studies highlight the health risks of undersleeping, yet we have never been asked to do more, and for longer. But why, when we know more about the value of sleep, are we obsessed with twenty-four-hour workdays and deliberate sleep deprivation?Does the fact that we are almost universally underslept change how our world works? We know it’s an issue with, say, pilots and truck drivers, but what about artists - does an insomnia culture change creativity? And what are the long-term cultural consequences of this increasing sacrifice for the everelusive goal of ‘total productivity’?

Jr. A Mountaineers home opener Saturday, 7 p.m. A new era in lacrosse in Etobicoke will begin this Saturday, 7 p.m. at Mimico Arena as the Mimico Mountaineers play their very first regular season game as a Jr. A franchise, hosting crosscity rival Toronto Beaches. As usual for a Mountaineers junior opener, the game will be followed by a live band on the arena floor. Mimico, who competed at

the Jr. B level for many years (including hosting the 2010 national championships) moved up to Jr. A as a result of an off-season partnership with the Mississauga Tomahawks organization who had been operating at both Jr. A and B levels. The shake up saw the Mississauga Jr. A team move to Mimico, where it’s expected to take advantage of a bur-

Semifinal ouster for Patriots The Etobicoke-based Toronto Patriots will not get a shot at a national Jr. A hockey championship this year, basically because they were unable to handle the home team at the Dudley Hewitt Cup in Fort Frances. The defending champion Patriots were knocked out of the four-team central Canadian championship tournament in the semifinal game Friday, May 1, 6-4 to the hometown Fort Frances Lakers. Representing the Ontario Jr. A Hockey League for the second straight year, the

Patriots couldn’t overcome a disastrous start, down 5-0 in the first period – although they almost rallied. The Patriots brought it back to 5-4 midway through the third period, only to have Fort Frances reply less than 20 seconds later with the insurance marker. The Patriots also lost to Fort Frances in the round robin 2-1 in overtime which basically cost the Patriots a bye straight to the championship game.

The Patriots are based out of Etobicoke’s Westwood Arena.

geoning youth system, while the two Jr. B teams amalgamated into one team which is now based out of Mississauga. Mimico continues to operate its Jr. C team. The new set-up gives players in both Mimico and Mississauga access to all three Jr. levels (A, B and C).

Humber Valley triple overtime champs The Humber Valley Novice Select Black 2006 team won the North York Hockey League Tier 2 Championship. The team faced Duffield Gold in the playoff finals and the two

teams were well matched. The series went to game four before a winner was determined. The final game was played at Chesswood Arena in mid-April and it was

a nail-biter to say the least. The game was 1-1 after the first period and it stayed that way until Tyler Miocevich scored the championship winner in triple overtime.
