Commitment, conviction and community credited for keeping The Harmony Singers in key Women’s singing group celebrates its 50th year with a two-day concert May 29-30

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com The year is 1965: off in Tinseltown, My Fair Lady has just won the Academy Award for best picture; The Sound of Music is making serious waves at the box office; and the Girl From Ipanema has taken home the Grammy for record of the year. Meanwhile, closer to home, yet another cultural phenomenon is born right here in Etobicoke with the formation of The Harmony Singers – a women’s three-part choir that, even 50 years later, continues to delight with its eclectically harmonious mix of popular, folk, Broadway and semi-classical tunes. “I’m thinking back 50 years ago, when so many of those things were happening, and yet this group somehow continues to go – and we do it as a non-profit, without any sponsorship and without any outside funding,” Harmony Singers President Suzanne West said during a recent choir rehearsal, attributing the group’s longevity to the “three Cs”. “I can tell you one thing about these ladies: we’re committed – we’re here rain, snow, sleet and hail – we sing with conviction; and we do it for the community. It’s really just a very, very fabulous group.” But you don’t have to take West’s word for it. In celebration of its golden anniversary season, the 31 voices that today make up the Harmony Singers of Etobicoke are inviting all members of the community out to The Best of Times – a two-night concert event in celebration of the choir’s favourite songs from over the past half-century – on Friday, May 29 and Saturday, May 30 at 8 p.m. at Martin Grove United Church, 75 Pergola Rd. (located at the corner of Martin Grove and Mercury roads). Conducted by musical director

ates who were named as co-winners of this year’s Harmony Singers 2015 Scholarship. “We’d love for people who have maybe heard of us before but never come to see us, or people who have

never heard of us, to come and see us,” said Amy Brewitt, a 14-year member of the choir who acts as the Harmony Singers’ publicity coordinator. “One of the things that keeps this group going so strong and for so long is that we have so much fun and we enjoy it so much – and that’s reflected in our concerts. It’s a wonderful group of people; everybody looks out for one another and a lot of friendships have been built from meeting in the choir. You can see that by the longevity of members we have.” Tied for longest-serving member of the Harmony Singers are Maybeth Coyne and Jocelyn ShewalterPatterson, who both joined nearly 20 years ago in 1996. Coyne, 81, said she signed up shortly after seeing an ad for the Harmony Singers right here in the pages of The Etobicoke Guardian. “I saw the ad in The Guardian, and I had just retired a year or two before that, so I thought why not?,” she said, noting that she had done some singing in the past with various school and church choirs. “I love music. I’m no great singer, but I can carry a tune – most of the time,” she laughed. “What’s kept me coming is the camaraderie between the girls. We’re all great friends, even though we’re all types and ages.” In fact, the 31 women who currently make up the Harmony Singers range in age from their 20s to their 80s, Brewitt confirmed, adding that there have even been some motherdaughter duos over the years. According to Patterson, a professional music teacher, composer, singer, writer and arranger who joined The Harmony Singers as conductor in 1991, the choir is always looking for new singers and would like to add a handful of sopranos, second sopranos and altos to its

three-part harmony in time for next season. “We would like to get more singers – maybe some more young people,” said Patterson, who, in addition to acting as music director for the Harmony Singers for the last 24 years, also founded The Canadian Singers. “We’re up to about 31 singers now, but I’d like to have 35.” Prospective new members, assured Coyne, need not be intimidated: “You don’t have to be a trained singer and you don’t have to read music – that’s the part of the ad that caught my eye,” she laughed. “You just have to love to sing.” Added West: “We are what a community choir is all about: we’re from all walks of life and every level of voice. Basically what pulls us all together is our love of singing,” she said. “You very, very quickly become sisters in song.” As for its upcoming 50th anniversary concerts, Brewitt said audiences can expect a sampling of the choirs’ favourite songs from over the years – from Georgia On My Mind and Cry Me A River, to Yesterday Once More and a medley from Ragtime – plus, a special closing performance to cap it all off. “We’ve contacted maybe 100 alumni that we know of, so we’re hoping to get a lot of them out and up on stage at the end of the concert to sing a song with us,” she said. “Go With a A Song In Your Heart is a song that we always do at the end of our concerts.” Tickets for the Harmony Singers’ upcoming The Best of Times concerts are $20 adults; $15 seniors/ students; or free for kids 10 and under; and include refreshments and door prizes. Caregivers are heroes, but they need support, too

ssuming the role of caregiver for a loved one may seem a natural decision when a friend or family member is struck with dementia, or acute or chronic health problems. But it can be a long, burdensome and isolated journey and those who make these sacrifices need to make sure they’re getting the supports they need. That’s why we at Metroland Media Toronto, in partnership with Downsizing Divas, are once again bringing The Caregiver Show to our city on May 30. Gardiner debate must address costs

he debate over the future of the Gardiner Expressway could turn out to be a very interesting discussion about the future of Toronto. It is odd that it should be: after all, we’re just talking about 1.7 kilometres or so of concrete, and the bit of roadway that is currently suffocating underneath. Toronto is so much more than the connection of two highways, and really, whether the city spends $900 million to rebuild the thing on a new configuration or about $400 million to rip it all down doesn’t make for a hill of beans in Scarborough or Etobicoke or North York. It is not a big part of the city. But it has become a big part of the debate about the city all the same, and when Toronto politicians start to talk about it… it gets emotional. Indeed, it got so emotional last week that when Toronto’s public works and infrastructure committee

david nickle the city was faced with making a proper recommendation on the matter, it threw up its hands and left it all to council. Mayor John Tory is going into that council meeting intending to support the ‘hybrid’ option of essentially shifting and rebuilding the ramps between the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway. It is costly, and doesn’t confer as many city-building advantages, but it appeals to many of the voters who might leave their mark next to pro-car Rob Ford’s name next election. And there are enough of those voters across the city that it’s likely a majority of councillors will lean toward the more expensive project. But the matter of the cost is the thing, and it might be quite the thing. York Centre Councillor

James Pasternak, who sits on the city’s budget committee, is a supporter of the hybrid option, but at the May 19 meeting of that committee, he made it clear he wasn’t about to support it without a way to pay. And the best way to pay? Road tolls, he said, preferably collected in such a way that it gave Toronto taxpayers a break. Well. If there is any issue more historically emotional than the question of the continued elevation of the Gardiner Expressway, it is the terrifying prospect of Hwy. 407-style road tolls on highways running through the heart of the city. Even when they haven’t been an issue – as in the 2003 mayoral race when John Tory (then a candidate) accused David Miller (soon to be the mayor) of favouring tolls on city highways – they’ve been a preoccupying issue. Miller spent a great deal of energy then and in the months and years afterward distancing

himself from the road-toll option for paying for city infrastructure. The city considered imposing tolls in 2008, and eventually rejected the idea because a full, regionaltolling system that included the 401, DVP and 427 would have been prohibitively expensive to set up. And indeed, this would likely remain the case. But Pasternak raises an interesting issue, as council moves to consider yet another billion-dollar-or-so infrastructure project resting on the same old revenue streams as before: namely, if Torontonians want to start living larger, or simply according to their needs, then money is going to have to come from somewhere beyond simple savings. Ongoing tours of the homestead, which boasts Georgian architecture and neo-classical concepts, will also be offered throughout the day.

MARKLAND WOOD GOLF CLUB 245 Markland Dr. Saturday & Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors to Markland Wood Golf Club will be taken on a tour of one of Toronto’s best kept secrets. The $3-million, 400-acre property was purchased by Marc Cavotti in 1958 from the Silverthorn family, who previously owned the land for 148 years. The facility was then built to accompany a course created in the river valley carved out by Hurricane Hazel. Coffee and tea will be available in the club’s main banquet area.

This neighbourhood developed into a cottage area starting in 1886 with high-end summer homes, followed by

Day visitors arrived by steamer and streetcar, and local residents opened stands where these visitors could eat, buy souvenirs, play games and dance in the open air. This era ended as owners began turning cottages into winterized

homes, and the kiosks along Lake Shore Boulevard West became the retail stores we’re familiar with today. MiWay bridge, station construction continues Tahoe, Etobicoke Creek, Spectrum and Orbitor stations to be complete in 2016; Eglinton still ripped up RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Etobians looking for a more reliable transit connection westward will have to wait a little longer as the expansion of the Mississauga Transitway (MiWay) inches to completion. Construction is already underway on the second phase of the dedicated bus network, which currently offers service at four street-level stations west of Hurontario Street but will expand to 12 by 2017 all the way to Renforth Drive in the east. Planned for the expansion are four stations east of Dixie Road: Tahoe, Etobicoke Creek, Spectrum and Orbitor, all of which are scheduled for completion in 2016.

Metrolinx is constructing Renforth Gateway which will act as the Transitway’s eastern terminus and provide links to Kipling subway station as well as Pearson International Airport, and is expected to be done by late 2017. There’s still a massive construction site around the Orbitor stop site, at Orbitor Drive located near the intersection of Eglinton Avenue West and Centennial Park Boulevard. City of Mississauga spokesperson Kimberly Hicks said the work, which has resulted in traffic impacts to local residents, includes bridge construction as well as station excavation. “Construction at the intersection of Eglinton Ave. W and Centennial Park is part of the transitway construction and staff are continually working

to improve traffic flow at this intersection,” said Hicks over email. MiWay’s eastern expansion isn’t the only major construction project planned within Etobicoke. At Islington Station the TTC is planning to reconstruct its “structurally fatigued” bus depot which houses both

the transit commission’s and MiWay’s operations. TTC spokesperson Susan Sperling said two of the station’s bus bays are closed and structural evaluations and design work is underway to come up with a way to repair the bus terminal and continue operations. She said a “shoring system” was required

to resume bus operations at Islington. Sterling said the Islington repairs would be done in consultation with Metrolinx which is planning to construct a new transit hub at Kipling, which includes a new bus terminal to house a number of transit operations including TTC and MiWay, projected

for completion in 2019. As part of the Renforth construction Metrolinx is readying a portion of the multi-use Pan Am Path which the provincial transit planning agency says will be done in time for the Games.

Metrolinx launches trip planner As the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games approach, a new trip planner from Metrolinx seeks to provide accurate travel data for transit rides taken in Toronto and beyond. Triplinx works very similarly to more well-known search resources like Google Maps, although in this case it caters to transit users. The site also has a searchable stop finder, access to schedules and service updates and information on the various transit providers’ fare rates. The ministry ordered the TTC to suspend and review the use of the racks back in the fall after concerns were raised about sightlines for

Dog guide gives Humber student confidence, increased independence Walk for Guide Dogs takes place May 29 in High Park LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Kelsey LeCoure has experienced a tremendous boost in confidence since being paired up with her dog guide last year. Troy, a specially trained black Labrador retriever provides assistance to the 19-year-old Humber College student, who is wheelchair bound. “I use a power wheelchair the majority of the time and have a hard time picking up items I drop and opening doors,” LeCoure said. “I was

fairly independent before getting my service dog, but now my independence is even greater. I would always worry that if I got stuck in the snow or injured myself – as I have brittle bones – that I wouldn’t be able to get help when I’m alone.” To help ease her anxiety and help her with daily tasks, LeCoure decided the best solution would be to get a service dog. Two-year-old Troy is trained to assist individuals with physical disabilities. Like all dog guides, Troy was provided to LeCoure, who was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a genetic disorder characterized by weakened bones, at no cost, by the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. The national charitable organization breeds, trains and places service dogs with qualifying applicants from across Canada. On Friday,

May 29, the Purina Walk for Dog Guides takes place in High Park. It is organized by the foundation’s executive director and Etobicoke resident, Sandy Turney, and will be emceed by Toronto comedian Kathy Greenwood. “A lot of time, money and resources go into preparing a service dog, and the Lions Foundation relies on donations to keep this work going,” Turney said in a statement. “This year, we have the ambitious goal of surpassing last year’s national fundraising record, and I hope the community here will help us get there.” Last year, the walk raised more than $1.1 million nationally. “Without donations through these types of events, the Lions Foundation would not be able to provide us the dogs at no cost,” LeCoure said. “This would mean that

Each dog guide costs approximately $25,000 to raise and train.” The walk not only serves to raise funds, but to raise awareness as well about what dog guides are and how they help people. “Each dog that graduates has gone through very intense training and is extremely well behaved,” LeCoure said. “This awareness is what will help prevent access issues, such as being denied a taxi ride, which has happened to me multiple times since receiving Troy in December.” Troy, LeCoure said, helps her in so many ways. He opens doors, opens and closes the fridge and cupboards, fetches things out of the fridge and cupboards, barks for help, and picks up items dropped items, she said. “Last but certainly not least, he gives me the con-

fidence and feeling of safety that I need to live my life to the fullest. He is my best friend and goes everywhere with me.”

The Martingrove team is the 2014-2015 Ontario Reach for the Top champions after a hard-fought match earlier this month against Ottawabased Lisgar Collegiate. Martingrove beat Lisgar 350 to 290 points. Thiessen leads the team, which includes students Elisa Kuhn, Bennet Montgomery, Igor Perepelytsya, Gavrilo Randjelovic, Fox Slawnych and Jonah Thiessen. Thiessen has been on his high school’s Reach team for four years. His younger brother, Jonah, 16, has played for two years. “I’ve always liked learning interesting things. I watch games like Jeopardy on TV. I do it every day. I’ve done it throughout my entire high school career,” said the elder Thiessen, who expects to attend Wilfrid Laurier University this fall to study business administration. Reach for the Top challenges high school students to be the first to buzz and correctly answer a variety of questions in categories including math, history and politics, science, literature and business. Pop culture questions comprise 20 to 30 per cent of the competition’s asks. Questions, like Who wrote Infinite Jest? and Who founded Magna International? Slawnych, 17, is on the team for the third consecutive year. He is the team’s “literature guy.” “I enjoy reading a lot. Reach questions aren’t just about who wrote what. Questions can ask, who were the main characters or the significance of something in the book,” explained the water polo player whose team, Toronto Mavericks, won the provincials two years ago. His favourite author is David Foster Wallace, author of Infinite Jest.

“Practice is everything for us. We’re all great friends. We’re getting together to do something we like,” Slawnych said. “I’d like more people to get involved. People who have an area of knowledge or expertise, I’d encourage them to join their school’s team.” Kuhn, 16, shares Slawnych’s enthusiasm to encourage other students to aim for Reach for the Top – especially female students. “I’d like to encourage people of all ages to join Reach, but especially girls because not a lot of girls come out,” said Kuhn, who dreams of becoming an optometrist. “I’d like to see more girls come out. I know they’d excel just as much.” Why does she enjoy it? “It’s just a lot of fun. For all of us, it’s something we love. We practice, practice, practice. We do it because we love it. It’s not a chore,” said the 16-year-old. Michael Goldberg has coached Martingrove’s Reach teams since 2001, the year after he was hired as a business and computer studies teacher at the school. He agreed practice is key to the team’s success.

“Most schools practice once or twice a week. We get together every day at lunch for 45 minutes to an hour reading questions, quizzing each other from our library of old question packs from previous years,” he said. This year’s Reach for the Top national playoffs run May 22 to 25. Goldberg’s strategy going into this year’s Reach for the Top national finals? “I want to make sure they’re having fun, keep them relaxed,” he said. “I tell them, ‘Listen. So many people want to be in your position. Just enjoy it.’ “Between games, they play Frisbee. Other teams are jamming with (previous Reach question) packs.” Since Goldberg began coaching in 2001, Martingrove Reach teams have advanced to the provincials every year but one. “It’s amazing,” Goldberg said of the success. “It’s a great social outlet for them, too. They have this knowledge not many people have. They’re seen like highend athletes around here.”

Care for yourself, then care for others: Rose Reisman Food and nutrition expert will be speaking at The Caregiver Show LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Rose Reisman’s resume boasts such titles as nutritionist, entrepreneur, author and TV personality – all of which have garnered her acclaim – yet one of her perhaps lesser known roles, but equally fulfilling, was that of caregiver. For years, her mother suffered from dementia and Reisman, with help from her sister, cared for her on a daily basis. It was a difficult period, Reisman recalled. “I remember feeling really anxious,” Reisman said. “I was missing out on exercise and eating well. I looked at myself in the mirror and thought, ‘I’m not taking care of myself.’” Almost eight million people in Canada are taking on the role of family caregiver. They are responsible for as much as 80 per cent of the needs

of those living with acute or chronic health issues. It’s a job that comes with its challenges, however, there is help. On Saturday, May 30, Saint Elizabeth Health Care, at-home services for family caregivers, presents The Caregiver Show, which takes place at the Centennial College’s Progress Campus Athletics Wellness Centre. The show is a one-day event providing caregivers with education and networking opportunities as well as a plethora of resources. It is brought to Toronto residents by Metroland Media Toronto and Downsizing Divas. Reisman is one of the guest speakers along with Teepa Snow, an occupational therapist who works as a dementia care and dementia education specialist. With an independent practice, Snow has clini-

cal appointments with Duke University’s School of Nursing and UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Medicine. Obesity and anxiety can be occupational hazards for caregivers, Reisman said. “What happens is, when you’re taking care of others, your own health fails,” she said, adding that caregivers put themselves at risk of such illnesses as heart disease and cancer. “Your immune

system goes down. You’ve got to remember to eat.” Reisman advises starting slowly, not only for caregivers, but for anyone seeking to change their eating habits for the better. Stick to Canada’s Food Guide. Try to eat three out of the four food groups at every meal. Have a piece of whole grain bread with a piece of cheese and some fruit. “It’s that easy,” she said. For snacks, consume two of the four food groups. Eating according to Canada’s Food Guide will provide sustenance for at least three hours. “Sleep is really important,” Reisman added. Reisman, who is on the committee for the Women’s Brain Health Initiative (www. womensbrainhealth.org), which creates education programs and funds research to combat brain aging diseases that affect women, said there are particular foods one can eat to promote brain health. Brain disease, she said, starts in our 20s. These “brain foods” include

berries, which contain the antioxidant anthocyanidin that helps fight inflammation and oxidation, dark greens, such as kale or baby kale, broccoli and brussels sprouts and fish, like salmon, which prevents inflammation that causes plaque buildup in the brain. “The hardSaturday est thing is changing your lifestyle,” Reisman said. She speaks from experience. She was in her early 30s, a mother of four children, and an avid runner, who thought she was healthy until a cholesterol check provided a rude awakening. “My cholesterol levels were off the Richter scale,” Reisman recalled. Although she was slim, genetics were working against her. Reisman’s father and aunt had died of heart failure in their 50s. “I really had to educate myself. I started reading (food) labels,” she said. “I know a lot

about food, but I read a lot. It’s been a 22-year journey.” Initially, Reisman said convincing people that healthy food could taste good, was an uphill battle. Her book, Rose Reisman Brings Home Light Cooking, was instrumental in changing people’s opinion. It sold more than 400,000 copies. In addition to her books, her show on the Life Network, Lighten Up with Rose Reisman, also served as a way to get her message out. She credits her husband, who is in real estate, for the inspiration behind Rose Reisman Catering, The Art Of Eating Well. He would tell her about his business lunches that were heavy and most often unhealthy. In September, Reisman will launch a school lunch program in an effort to encourage students to eat healthy. Suspect wanted in string of west-end bank heists Toronto police are seeking the public’s help in their hunt for a man wanted in connection with four bank robberies earlier this year in Etobicoke and North York. Police are also seeking a second man wanted in one robbery in February. A man walked into a bank at Royal York Road and La Rose Avenue on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 2:15 p.m., handed a teller a note indicating he had a gun and made a demand for cash, police said.

He fled before he got any money. Later that day, a man walked into a bank at 4:10 p.m. on Keele Street south of Finch Avenue west. He handed a teller a robbery note. He showed her an iPhone with a two-minute countdown timer. He was given a quantity of cash and fled, police said. That night, a man entered a bank at 7:55 p.m. at Bloor Street West and Royal York Road. He handed the teller a note that

gave her five minutes to hand over cash. He pulled out his iPhone with countdown timer running. As the teller readied the cash, he fled empty-handed, police said. The suspect is described as black, 20 to 25 years old, 5’6” to 5’7” with a slim build wearing a Cleveland Indians baseball cap, black “Chuck Taylor” high tops and white earbuds. Police released the man’s photo. Police allege the same man entered a bank on Friday, Feb. 6 at 8:30 a.m.

It will take over the streets surrounding Exhibition Place near Lake Ontario and downtown Toronto June 12 to 14 instead of its usual July date, in order to prevent a conflict with this summer’s Pan Am Games. Last year’s winner Sebastien Bourdais was on hand recently with Charlie Johnstone, president of Honda Indy Toronto, to kick off the building of the track and grandstand.
