SLU takes fans to the ball game North Etobicoke youth get new experience CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com A group of young Blue Jays fans from Etobicoke were treated to the hottest tickets in town last week, courtesy of 23 Division police.

Last Thursday, officers from the north Etobicoke division’s Somali Liaison Unit (SLU) accompanied 13 youth from the Dixon, Islington and Queen’s Plate communities to the Jays’ final home game of the regular season.

And even though the home team was defeated by their division rival Baltimore Orioles 4-0,

Sgt. Brian Beadman still called it a “positive experience all the way around”.

“My favourite part was just seeing the kids in awe. A lot of these kids have never gotten the chance to get out to a Blue Jays game, so it was that awe factor that kind of made my day,” Beadman said of the outing.

“And with the Jays being a hot item right now, the kids were in their glory.”

Bursary honours memory of arts educator Ellen Hitchcock Cynthia Reason creason@insidetoronto.com

A bursary in memory of Ellen Hitchcock will be handed down to its inaugural recipient Thursday night – six years less one day after the local actor and arts educator’s passing.

Created by Lakeshore Arts, the Ellen Hitchcock Memorial Bursary was originally intended to subsidize one deserving child – or “pookie” as Hitchcock liked to call them – enrolled in the Theatre and Art Summer Program she played a pivotal role in founding and teaching at Lakeshore Arts, said Executive Director Susan Nagy.

“But after Ellen died it just wasn’t the same,” said Nagy, noting that the program eventually folded and the Lakeshore Arts board was left to find a new way to continue honouring Hitchcock.

The end result? A bursary to help a Lakeshore Collegiate Institute graduate pursuing university drama or theatre studies.

“With this bursary, we hope that we can celebrate that passion that Ellen had for life, and also for theatre and arts education,” Nagy said, noting that Lakeshore

Could we elect a Trump-like leader?

Here in Canada, the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency is a terrifying one.

The real-estate mogul and reality television star has been building support on a campaign of bigotry, misogyny and violence. While his campaign is still trailing that of former secretary of state, senator and first lady Hillary Clinton, the gap in polls is narrow and it is conceivable that Trump might prevail.

The leader of our closest neighbour, biggest trading partner and longtime ally might be a whitesupremacist-approved, lying, narcissistic tyrant.

The only comfort we might take in this distressing scenario: at least something like that could never happen here. Or could it?

Our parliamentary system of government treats executive power very differently the American bicameral OuR ViEW than system. Our nomination process means it’s less likely that any party would choose such a polarizing figure as its leader, and in a federal election, voters aren’t faced with a simple choice between two candidates as happens in the U.S. But, it would be naive to think that Canadians are immune to the kind of xenophobic bigotry and nativism that has fuelled Trump’s rise.

At its core, Trump’s success depends on two things – people who are profoundly worried about their future and a society where systemic racism makes it easy to blame “the other” for its problems. We have both here.

In 2015, when Stephen Harper’s Conservatives banned women from wearing niqabs when taking citizenship oaths, vowed to revoke citizenship to dual citizens convicted of terrorism and floated the idea of a snitch line for “barbaric cultural practices,” the party had strong support.

Now, Conservative leadership candidate Kellie Leitch is promoting a plan to screen out immigrants who hold “anti-Canadian values.”

Does that mean that Canadians are ready to consider handing a Donald Trump the key to 24 Sussex Dr.? We like to think not. But we’d like to think the same of our friends south of the border.

Is Toronto Hydro Mayor Tory’s next gold mine?

There has to be gold in here somewhere.

That sentiment, or a variation of it, has been a mantra for political leaders and would-be leaders since amalgamation.

Former premier Mike Harris and his municipal affairs minister Al Leach were the first to see the mythical El Dorado in the 416 area code when they amalgamated the city from seven municipal governments into one. Surely, pulling all those bureaucracies together into one would save hundreds of millions of dollars.

When that didn’t pan out, provincial scolds like former Scarborough Tory MP Steve Gilchrist helpfully suggested that amalgamated Toronto might sell off Metro Hall. But that never made sense in the end, as the former seat of Metro government housed a sizeable part of the city’s bureaucracy.

Privatize garbage collection city-wide? Maybe

david nickle the city one day it’ll save the cashstrapped city millions, but Toronto had to break free of job protection language in collective agreements to even consider the idea. Now that’s happened, maybe contracting-out advocates will make one more attempt, and may pull it off.

It’s hard to say whether Mayor John Tory will succeed at one of the most often-sought gold mines in the Toronto portfolio: that being Toronto Hydro, the electricity distribution company wholly owned by the City of Toronto.

Certainly, many before him have tried and failed.

Mel Lastman mused about selling it off. Jane Pitfield, running to unseat David Miller in 2006, gave it a go on the hustings, as did Karen Stintz in 2010 – and in neither case were they able to get near a mandate to do so.

Tory has been ruminating about a Hydro sale for months at least – or a species of Hydro sale, perhaps similar to the notion that Karen Stintz floated in 2010.

Stintz argued that selling off about half of the city’s interest in the company would raise enough money to pay for the downtown relief subway line. She also suggested that leasing the company could work, if it weren’t possible to avoid the provincial taxes placed on the sale of more than 10 per cent of the asset.

Either of these options might work well for Mayor Tory’s purposes. He, too, needs to finance a downtown relief line, and could also use some coin to build his scaled-back SmartTrack plan.

A couple of weeks ago now, Tory turned his attention very publicly to the nuts-and-bolts workings of Toronto Hydro, in particular dealing with the multiple outages in highrise downtown Toronto condomin-

ium towers like CityPlace.

The culprit, Tory noted first in a news release and then in front of reporters at the Toronto Board of Trade, was aging infrastructure serving growing areas.

And he made it very clear that he not only wanted to get some power flowing from the utility, but also some cash, which he said should not be at the cost of public accountability.

This is going to be a delicate balance. It’s hard to imagine very much money coming out of a partial sale of a power grid already in dire need of upgrade and repair – particularly one that will offset the loss of part of the annual dividend Toronto gets, amounting to approximately $60 million.

But it looks as though in the short term at least, we’re going to dip our pan into that river one more time.

Box elder bugs prove a nuisance, but pose no threat Insects identified in Etobicoke, York and North York Cynthia Reason creason@insidetoronto.com For Maria Miranda, the most effective tool against this late summer and early fall’s seasonal onslaught of box elder bugs has been duct tape.

As manager of Roger’s Music Centre at 465 Rogers Rd. – the epicentre of one of several large infestations reported in recent weeks – Miranda has been forced to seal off the store’s front door against invasion by the red and black beetle-like insects that have migrated from a nearby Manitoba maple.

“They have been here for a couple of months, but in the last month they have increased because of the heat.

They just multiply like fire,” said Miranda, noting that the box elders have taken to sunning themselves in the thousands on the store’s outside wall, fencing, and even sidewalk.

“For us at the store it’s a problem because we’ve had dozens (get inside).

But for our neighbours, too - there’s

a blind lady upstairs who likes to leave her window open and now she can’t. And we have neighbours with small children who say it’s ridiculous because they can’t even stay in their backyard because of the bugs. They’re a big, big nuisance.”

A nuisance, yes – but are box elders dangerous?

Not at all, according to Stephen Smith, a certified arborist and owner of Urban Forest Associates Inc. Box elder bugs, he explained, are a generally harmless native insect that cause little to no damage to trees and structures, nor do they pose any biting or stinging threat to humans or animals.

“They’re part of our natural ecosystem and every now and then they’ll have an eruption and you get lots and lots of them, but they do no serious harm,” said Smith, noting that he recently investigated a similar complaint about box elders outside a home in the Eglinton Avenue West and Scarlett Road area of Etobicoke.

“It’s this time of year when they tend to congregate on people’s houses where it’s nice and warm and sunny and that’s when people start to notice them. But there’s really no cause for concern. Even if the odd one gets in

under a window or a door, they can’t really do any damage.”

As such, Smith said chemical-free solutions are the best approach to dealing with the colourful critters.

While vacuums work wonders on the odd bug that might get into your home, Smith urged residents to simply ignore those on the outside walls/ fences of their homes.

“They’re going to go away, so why

would you want to spray pesticides and kill everything just because of them?” he reasoned, noting that the box elders will likely only stick around a couple more weeks. “As soon as we get the frosty weather, their life cycle will end and they’ll be dead and gone for the year.”

That sentiment was echoed by Edith George, a self-described “tree hugger” and advisor to the Ontario Urban Forest Council.

“I’ll tell you one thing, you don’t want to spray - because you just look at what’s happened in Florida,” she said, referencing the large number of bees that have been inadvertently killed off by spraying for the Zika virus.

“When you spray, you kill all the other insects - namely the bees - so we just have to suck it up and accept the nuisance while it lasts.”

George said she, too, has received reports of box elder swarms this late summer and early fall – namely in the Albion and Weston roads.

As with the infestation outside Roger’s Music Centre, that North York swarm site is likewise situated in close proximity to a Manitoba maple tree, George added, calling the tree an “invasive species” that many arborists classify as weeds. Known more com-

monly as box elder trees in the U.S., the Manitoba maple is box elder bugs’ natural hosts and where they like to lay their eggs - and, as such, act to attract the insects in large numbers.

It’s because of that magnetic effect the trees tend to have on box elder bugs that Miranda and her neighbours on Rogers Road are petitioning the city to remove their Manitoba maple - and hopefully the scourge of insects that come with it.

“That’s what we would like to see happen. They could even put some other tree in - as long as it’s not that same kind,” she said.

“It seems to be the root of the whole problem, so next year we’ll probably have the same issues all over again if the tree is still here.”

A representative from Cesar Palacio’s office confirmed the Davenport councillor has requested the city arborist go out to the site to inspect the tree – whose health is also in question – for possible removal. In the meantime, the landlord of the building - which houses both Roger’s Music Centre and the upstairs apartment of the blind woman - is in the process of hiring someone to rid the tree of the box elder bugs, said Gino Orsi, Palacio’s constituency assistant.

opportunity to engage the participants in one-on-one conversations ranging from school work, to police work, to, of course, baseball.

“It was through those conversations that we learned that a couple of the kids are aspiring to be police officers, which is great. Now there’s an open line of communications between those youth and my officers, so that they can ask them questions and go to them for advice,” he said.

“Another really nice positive spinoff of this whole initiative was that we were able to get four or five new youth volunteers who are going to work with us in the future to be leaders in our neighbourhood outreach programs.

And those youth will be able to use that towards their high school volunteer hours. It’s a win-win.”

Recently, the Etobicoke woman became one of only a handful of Ontarians to donate blood an astounding 800 times.

“Blood is the ultimate renewable resource,” said Ohara, 68, who works for Toronto police. “You don’t know when you, a family member or a friend may need some blood.”

Every two weeks, Ohara heads to CBS headquarters at 67 College St. to donate a bag of platelets, which she can donate 24 times a year.

Ohara began donating blood at age 21.

She said she was drawn to more specialized platelets and plasma donation after seeing other donors on different blood-drawing machines.

“The nice thing about plasma and platelet donation is you’re essentially matched with (a recipient),” Ohara said.

Platelets, a component required to make blood clot, is in need by people with diseases associated with prolonged bleeding, such as cancer and bone marrow therapy. Platelets have a shelf

life of only five days.

Plasma donations help people with some bleeding disorders, liver diseases, and in some operations.

Blood donation is a family tradition for Ohara.

Ohara’s father, Charles Overton, began taking her at age four to his blood-donation appointments, including

at the former Hospital for Sick Children, which is now CBS headquarters where Ohara donates.

Overton donated 99 times until his age made him ineligible.

Michael Scharlemann, Ohara’s husband, has donated blood 78 times. He made a stem cell donation after being

notified he was a match on the national unrelated bone marrow registry.

“The trick is to get donors younger, in high school and in college,” Ohara said. “Make it a family tradition. Go with your parents or friends to a mobile clinic at the mall.”

Across Canada, CBS must collect 17,000 units of blood

every week. Since blood products have a limited shelf life, demand is constant.

“Roughly every minute, every day, someone in Canada needs blood,” CBS stated.

Blood and blood components are used to treat a number of injuries and illnesses, including various forms of cancer, hip and joint conditions, transplants, traumas, such as car accidents, blood disorders, and many others.

Across the country, less than four per cent of eligible Canadians donate blood, CBS reported.

One in 60 Canadians donate, despite the fact one in two is eligible.

Meanwhile, half of Canadians report they or a family member have required blood or blood components for surgery or medical treatment, CBS stated.

Type O negative blood is in highest demand. It can be used in emergency situations on anyone when there is no time to test a patient’s blood.

People with Type O negative blood are considered universal donors.

One person may donate whole blood up to six times a year, improving the lives of as many as 18 people, to CBS stated. The

entire process takes just over an hour.

The standard blood donation is approximately 450 millilitres, slightly less than half a litre or two cups. An average adult’s body contains about five litres of blood.

This year, CBS has revised its donation eligibility requirements.

Health Canada approved CBS’s request to reduce the blood-donation waiting period for men who have sex with men from five years to one year.

CBS tests blood donations for syphilis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV-1 and 2, Human T-Cell lymphotropic virus HTLV-I and II and West Nile Virus.

CBS also revised its donation eligibility requirements to mitigate the risk, which it pegs at one in 8.3 million, of the Zika virus entering the Canadian blood system.

Anyone who has traveled outside of Canada, the continental United States and Europe is now ineligible to give blood for 21 days after their return.

The Zika virus lasts three to five days in the blood, and clears the body within 21 days, CBS stated.

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet.

The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.”

But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly!

My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies.

And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.”

Claireville toll house stands after 150 years I n 2011, on a quest to look at every property in Etobicoke listed on the City of Toronto’s Heritage Register, I was surprised when I first saw 2095 Codlin Cres. in Claireville. This once well-kept house was now the rundown and spraypainted office of a tractor/ trailer parking business.

There was no information in the city’s file to tell me why this sad-looking building was on the register.

Soon after, I was in the library at Montgomery’s Inn and by chance discovered a 1984 research paper on Claireville that said 2095 Codlin Cres. (originally 2095 Albion Rd.) “was initially used as the toll house for the Albion Plank Road.”

The Albion Plank Road Company had been incorporated in 1846 to build an improved road from Thistletown, through Claireville to Bolton, and it

passed right by this house.

Several primary sources proved that by 1852 a tollgate was located in Claireville, overseen by a series of toll keepers. By 1871, the toll keeper was Christopher Armstrong.

But where was this toll house located in the village?

Fortunately, I was able to find Fred and Audrey Henderson, the last residential owners of 2095 Codlin Cres. When they moved to Claireville in 1961, they were often told that their house had been called “The Tollhouse” for as long as anyone could remember. Then, shortly before selling the property in 2006, they were visited by a woman who was a descendant of toll keeper Christopher Armstrong.

by her grandmother, and knew she had the correct house because it was the only one with a front door facing west, perpendicular to Albion Road.

The tollgate would have crossed Albion Road from the northwest corner of

the house, making it easy for the toll keeper to step out his door, collect the toll, and open the gate for the traveler.

Other records indicated that the house was built ca. 1851, making it the oldest building in

Claireville.

The house itself is an example of Neo-classical architecture. The gables all have prominent cornice returns, a feature of this style. The off-centre main entry door appears to be original. However, its life as a toll house was over by 1880 when the Albion Plank Road Company declared bankruptcy.

For a long time, it has been thought that the only toll house left in Toronto is the one on the northwest corner of Davenport Road and Bathurst Street.

Now we know there is a second one - little known and neglected - in Etobicoke. Not only has the Claireville toll house survived, it is also the only toll house still in its original location.

Preserving heritage trees focus of talk The Lambton House, 4066 Old Dundas St., hosts a heritage talk about heritage trees and why they should be preserved on Oct. 13, The presentation, by Edith George, will focus on a red Oak tree in her neighbourhood and what its past owners have contributed to Canada during various armed conflicts.

Doors open at 7 p.m. with the presentation starting at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be available. A goodwill donation is appreciated.

uReport: Thanksgiving arrives early, delivering more than 100 turkeys Thanksgiving came early f o r s o m e re s i d e n t s o f Etobicoke.

Last Saturday, Possibility Chapel held a small get together at the Elmbank Community Centre.

Donna Gabbidon Scrivens, who works for Canada Post and delivers mail in the area, saw the need. She approached her pastor Dr. O.K. Dugan who jumped on the idea and with the help of two other coordinators, Ramona Ducasse and Michael Thomas, they were able to put on a successful program.

The residents were treated to light refreshments, some music and most of all fellowship and at the end, Possibility Chapel, with the help of more than 20 volunteers were able to distribute more than 100 turkeys.

The guests left happy and one even said, most of all it was the fellowship she enjoyed by far.

Union upset over TTC’s one-person subway system launching next week It appears the TTC is going to have a fight on its hands as it begins to phase out subway guards from service.

The guards are responsible for safely opening and closing doors on the train. Transit agencies the world over have switched to a one-person system, and now the TTC is following suit as of next week on the Sheppard line.

The TTC’s main labour union ATU Local 113 isn’t taking the move lying down: it had a hand in encouraging TTC personnel to turn down voluntary late night subway shifts during Nuit Blanche, presumably to protest the new one-person system according to media reports, and is promising further actions in the future.

The TTC will explore using taxi cabs and ride hailing services like UberX to supplement service along certain routes.

The TTC already contracts taxi companies to provide additional Wheel-Trans service, but it’s unknown what the face of future “micro transit” could look like. TTC staff will now research the matter to see if the scheme will work for the transit commission.

It was probably more suited for filming post-apocalyptic zombie movies in its later years, but the Eglinton bus barn in its heyday was a crucial transit hub.

Demolition of the old barn began in late September at the Yonge-Eglinton intersec-

tion. Dating back to 1922, the garage housed buses and, according to Transit Toronto, was the city’s first streetcar storage facility. It closed for good in 2004, with calls from advocates to convert all or part of the land into a square.

The Bay-Richmond intersection will close Oct. 6 to 11 for road and streetcar track work.

Construction will take place 24 hours a day, although the city promes to suspend disruptive work by 11 p.m. nightly. Cyclists and pedestrians will still be permitted to access the intersection.

Another closure is planned over the weekend on Bay, between King and Adelaide for a crane hoisting.

One-operator subway trains to kick off on Sheppard line New system expected to save $30 million a year, improve safety Rahul Gupta rgupta@insidetoronto.com Subway guards tasked with opening and closing train doors are destined to become a relic of the past as the TTC prepares to switch to oneperson controlled vehicles.

Beginning Thanksgiving Sunday, the TTC will launch One Person Train Operation (OPTO) on modified Toronto Rocket trains on its Sheppard line (Line 4). The YongeUniversity line (Line 1) is set to be converted by 2019 with the BloorDanforth line (Line 2) following after that.

The four-car train sets on Sheppard are smaller than the models running on Line 1, and they will allow the operator to not only pilot the vehicle, but open and close the doors thus eliminating the need for another person to manually control such functions, TTC officials said. Door controls will now be located in the drivers’ cabins found at both ends of the Rockets, along with video screens depicting what’s unfolding at platform level via “multi-angle” cameras.

“Drivers can open and close the doors without leaving their seat,” said the TTC’s chief acting operating officer Mike Palmer on Monday during a technical briefing at Don Mills Station.

“She or he upon arrival will have the platform images come up... (which they can monitor) as the train leaves the station.”

The policy is widely in use across

the world and within the TTC on the Scarborough RT. OPTO will save the transit commission an estimated $18 million a year once it is implemented on both Sheppard and Yonge-University-Spadina and $30 million systemwide, said CEO Andy Byford. He promised no direct layoffs, with subway guards either re-assigned to new station duties or other divisions, their positions phased out upon retirement through attrition.

The TTC’s largest labour union Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 113 strongly opposes the move, warning OPTO jeopardizes safety even though it is in place – in some cases for nearly 20 years across far busier transit systems like the London Underground, the Paris Metro and the Hong Kong MTR. Last week, the union released the results of an opinion poll, indicating more than two-thirds of respondents oppose removing the guard from subway trains.

But Byford insisted OPTO could actually improve safety.

He said the new system prevents operators from opening the doors on the wrong side, or if the train is not properly aligned with the platform. It also lessens the potential of abuse of TTC employees by irate transit riders and being hit with flying debris, since the operator won’t have to leave the cabin to control the doors. The use of the new cameras would also provide more “eyes” on the platform.

front and not have someone leaning out of the window I would argue it’s a much safer practice,” Byford said. “Who better to control the doors than the person who knows exactly where the train is, the train operator.”

It will cost $60-million to complete OPTO conversions on Sheppard and Yonge, with cost-savings expected within three years, according to the TTC. The Bloor-Danforth line will lag behind as it employs an older model subway car that can’t be converted

to one-person operation.

Palmer said the Sheppard subway guards, who will transfer to Line 1 as of next week, could be re-assigned to the Spadina subway extension to Vaughan when it opens in early 2017.

Tennis pro Stan Palmateer is Etobicoke Athlete of the Month Etobicoke born, raised and still residing in Etobicoke (Mimico), Stan Palmateer is a 56-year-old Toronto Public Library worker and tennis pro for both Central Tennis Club and Mimico Tennis Club.

A Lawsuit May Affect Your Rights. Please Read this Notice Carefully this notice is to advise of a lawsuit brought as a class action relating to the ernest c. Drury School for the Deaf (formerly the ontario School for the Deaf, Milton) (“Drury”), the Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf (formerly the ontario institute for the education of the Deaf and Dumb and the ontario School for the Deaf) (“Sir James Whitney”), and the Robarts School for the Deaf (“Robarts”), collectively referred to as the “Schools”. it involves anyone who was a student at Drury since 1963 to the present, Sir James Whitney since 1938 to the present, and Robarts since 1973 to the present and certain of their family members. If you know a student of the Schools who cannot read this notice, please share this information with them. if you are within this group, you have a choice of whether to stay in the class or not, and you must decide this now.

What is this case about? the lawsuit says the Province of ontario failed to properly care for and protect people who attended or resided at the Schools. the lawsuit says that students were emotionally, physically, and psychologically traumatized by their experiences at the Schools. the Province of ontario denies these claims. the court has not decided whether the Plaintiff or the Province of ontario is right.

Are you included?

You are included in this lawsuit if: • you attended or resided at Drury at any time between 1963 and august 23, 2016 and have not otherwise released your claim • you attended or resided at Sir James Whitney at any time between 1938 and august 23, 2016 and have not otherwise released your claim • you attended or resided at Robarts at any time between 1973 and august 23, 2016 and have not otherwise released your claim • you are the parents, spouses, children or siblings of someone and who is included in the lawsuit and who attended or was in residence at one of the Schools between 1978 and august 23, 2016 • you are an estate trustee for a person who was a student or family member of a student who is included in the lawsuit and that person was living on or after august 10, 2013 Who are the lawyers who represent the class?

Staying in this Class will not impact the residence or services and supports received by class members from community based agencies which are funded by the Province of Ontario.
