Chrysanthemum show at Centennial Park Conservatory Discover autumn’s beauty at the city’s chrysanthemum show at Centennial Park Conservatory throughout November.

Etobicoke youth explore ideas at [U] labs workshop Scholarships available for workshop at C.J. Skateboard Park on Nov. 14-15 CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.coM Etobicoke’s resident “change-maker” is offering full scholarships to five local youth for her upcoming [U] Labs event at C.J. Skateboard Park and School.

Kim Klingler – a veteran in the change-making industry who has worked with the likes of Deepak Chopra and Wayne Dyer in her 10 years in the field – will host the twoday event for youth aged 10 to 14 on Saturday, Nov. 14 and Sunday, Nov. 15 at the south Etobicoke-based indoor skateboard park. “[U]Labs is a compilation of all of my years’ work with people like Deepak Chopra and those types of ‘crunchy granola’, ‘bodacious vocabulary’ personal development tools that most kids giggle at,” said Klingler, who also helped found the Ian Somerhalder Foundation alongside its namesake Vampire Diaries’ star.

“The whole point of [U]Labs is to help kids identify their passions, cultivate their talents, and amplify their purpose.”

Over the course of two “really, really hands-on” days at CJ Skateboard Park, Klingler said her young [U] Labs participants will be divided into pods, and with their mentor, go through a process of identifying their passions, talents and what matters most to them.

“In the end, we end up developing a beautiful, unique sort of resume as to why they’re valuable and what comprises them,” she said.

Labs team will group together participants with common interests – be that environmentalism, animal rights, anti-bullying advocacy, or business start-ups.

“It could be anything, really – the most important thing is to get them into something that they absolutely love, and then they can start devising a project proposal that they will co-create in their teams, and through their talents and their skill sets,” she said.

On Day 2 of the [U]Labs experience, Klingler said participants would then dig deeper into their project proposal – from project ideation, to project development, to project management.

By hosting the two-day [U]Labs event at CJ Skateboard Park, Klingler said she’s hoping to draw her young participants out of their comfort zones.

Klingler’s [U]Labs event runs from

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14 and Sunday, Nov. 15 at CJ Skateboard Park, 60 Horner Ave. While the cost for the two-day lab is $175, Klingler is giving away five scholarships to worthy youth from here in Etobicoke.

very choice has its consequences. Good or bad.

If you don’t complete a major school assignment, you could get a failing grade. If you don’t go to work one day, you may not get paid.

If you don’t vote on election day, you won’t exercise your democratic right to choose your elected official.

That consequence is a fact. It’s non-negotiable and it should concern you.

On Monday, Oct. 19, Canadians head to the polls to cast a ballot in the longest election campaign this country has seen in 143 years.

Some will tell you the economy is the biggest issue, others will say it’s national security or health care.

What you need to know is what the most important issue is for you and your family. Investigate it, so on election day, you can make an informed decision.

Expand museum plan for Old City Hall Toronto’s story is big enough to take up plenty of space

E

ven in grumpy, contrary, old Toronto, occasionally an obviously good idea emerges that pretty much everyone agrees on. So it is this week, with a multilateral desire to install a City of Toronto Museum in Old City Hall.

No one – not even our grumpiest, most contrary representative, Ward 2’s Rob Ford – spoke any way other than glowingly about the idea of putting a museum inside the grand old building at Bay and Queen streets.

It will have to wait until the provincial government moves its court operation out of there once and for all.

But then, the city will be

The only catch?

Proponents of the museum have done a tally of the material available in the city’s archives and estimate the museum doesn’t really need much more than 30,000 square feet.

Which gives the city the option of looking for other uses for the remaining 130,000 square feet… which of course is exactly what’s happening.

City staff has obtained a report indicating that the remaining space would do well as a sort of shopping mall, leased to a property manager who would fill the place up with rent-paying shops.

Councillor Ford, an enthusiastic supporter of the museum, suggested the

city might want to lease the remaining space to an hotelier, who might also set up a fancy restaurant at the site.

Making money off the soon-to-be-untenanted site seems to be a common theme for now, and that may change: the government management committee voted to ask staff to spend the next two years refining plans and consulting with the public.

Here’s hoping that as the city refines the plans, it thinks more expansively about, well, expanding that museum plan.

There is no need to limit a museum that delves into Toronto’s history and its current state to simply a 30,000-square-foot singular display. Toronto’s story is bigger than that.

This summer, I found myself in Stockholm, Sweden, and while there found time to visit the Nordiska Museum – a museum of cultural history dedicated to telling the

story of life in Sweden, from the 16th century to the present.

It fills a building not so different in size and architectural presence from Old City Hall, and it uses that space to talk about everything from textiles, children’s toys and Christmas traditions to the Swedish love affair with sugar.

It’s not difficult to imagine a large, expansive museum that talks about Toronto, the many peoples who have made this place their home and helped build it into what it is.

As Canada’s largest municipality, Toronto’s story is more and more Canada’s story, too.

Limiting such a museum to a 30,000-square-foot wing of such a striking building would be a shame, a squandering of a rare opportunity.

The Dunstans first met Manwar in Sydney back in 1998, just one year after Manwar received the first of what would be three cancer diagnoses she would face in her life – thyroid cancer in 1997 at the age of 24, breast cancer in 2011 at age 38, and finally, Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer with mets (new occurrences of cancer) in the bones, spine, lungs and a brain tumour, in 2013 at age 40.

Rather than turn to despair, in her own words Manwar said she instead chose to seize the opportunity to spread the message that “The key is to live life to the fullest and live each day as if it were your last,” she wrote in a blog post at www.lynnmanwar. com on Jan. 27, 2015.

Rather than give up, she fully embraced her three cancer diagnoses “as part of my karmic journey to inspire others to live life fully,” she further wrote in her most recent bio for After Breast Cancer – just one of the organizations to which Manwar dedicated so much of her time.

Back in July, Manwar was handpicked by After Breast Cancer founder Alicia Vianga as one of 12 ambassadors to be featured in the organization’s second annual S/HE Thrives calendar – the proceeds from which support After Breast Cancer’s mission to provide breast cancer survivors in need with free prosthetic breasts and specialized bras.

The cause, said Vianga, was one that was especially close to Manwar’s heart.

“She had such amazing ideas of things we could do with the charity and she was really happy that this service was available, because it was something she never had,” Vianga

said of Manwar, who she fondly nicknamed the ‘Queen of Networking’.

“She never dwelled on her own challenges, because she was always doing, always giving to other people.

That’s just the kind of person she was and that’s why people love her so much – because of her positive outlook on life and always wanting the best for everyone. She’ll be best remembered for her fighting spirit, never giving up and for being extremely positive.”

Indeed, Jack Fleming, president of the Rotary Club of Etobicoke, said he visited with Manwar the day she died and even then “witnessed the same level of determination in her” that he had seen on so many other occasions throughout her involvement with Rotary.

“She was a fighter, and she showed it again at that moment as she struggled for every breath,” he said of Manwar, who was recognized with Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellow Award this past June for her “courage and attitude”.

City landmarks may get name on LRT stops The Ontario Science Centre and the Aga Khan Museum are some of the landmarks Metrolinx is proposing to use as inspiration for names of future LRT stations on the Eglinton Crosstown line.

Naming stations after tourist attractions is relatively unique for Toronto, although that seems to be changing. The TTC board recently eschewed its traditional practice of using streets for names when it approved a planned subway stop on the Spadina subway line to be named after nearby Black Creek Pioneer Village.

Etobicoke York Community Council endorsed municipal refusal of another proposed lot severance in Long Branch and endorsed consideration of a potential new GO train station on Park Lawn Road in Humber Bay Shores at its Tuesday meeting.

Councillors supported Councillor Mark Grimes’ motion to request Toronto City Council direct a city lawyer, planner and any other necessary staff to attend an Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) hearing in January.

Councillors’ recommendation supports the local Committee of Adjustment’s refusal of the consent and variances requested by the owner of 97 Twenty-Seventh St. Tristar Custom Homes appealed to the Committee of Adjustment earlier this year for permission to tear down a small red-brick bungalow

built near the back of the property on the northwest corner of Twenty-Seventh Street and Alder Crescent in Long Branch.

Tristar proposes to build two detached houses with garages in the bungalow’s place. In July, the Committee of Adjustment refused Tristar’s consent and variance applications. The committee stated the proposed land division is “premature,” does not conform to Official Plan policies, and the suitability of the land to the proposal, and the dimensions and shapes of the proposed lots “has not been demonstrated.”

Committee members also refused the minor variance applications stating the general intent of the Official Plan and zoning bylaw “are not met,” the variance requested “is not minor” and the proposed variance is “not considered desirable for the appropriate development of the land.”

Tristar’s appeal is scheduled to go before the OMB Jan. 14.

Later Tuesday morning, councillors voted unanimously in favour of Grimes’ motion to support city planners’ recommendations to endorse consideration of a new, additional GO Transit station at Park Lawn Road.

Metrolinx recently released a new station analysis report, which includes Park Lawn.

Gr imes and fellow Etobicoke Councillor Justin Di Ciano wrote community council informing it Metrolinx is considering Park Lawn as the location of a potential station.“We cannot stress enough how inadequate public transit service is in Etobicoke-Lakeshore,” the councillors wrote in their letter.

Both matters will go before Toronto City Council Nov. 3.

Markland Wood residents seemed to be losing the most sleep over noisy night flights coming in and out of Pearson airport.

De Mello pointed out that Pearson has doubled the amount of night flights Heathrow airport has, and that both the Conservative and Liberal governments have failed to stand up for the community on this topic in the past.

Wrzesnewskyj condemned Optiz for voting in favour of preventing community input in cases of airport expansions.

He said he intends to ban night flights altogether, and suggests Hamilton Mountain airport, which is surrounded by farmland, take the current flights to

Discussion of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) highlighted the division between the Conservatives and Liberals.

Opitz said the TPP gives Canada access to 12 of the leading and merging nations and revises and updates NAFTA. “The dairy farmers them-

selves are happy with this deal,” Opitz said.

His comment was met with a room full of sarcastic laughter.

“Mr. Opitz, it’s not just this crowd that didn’t believe what you said,” Wrzesnewskyj said.

“Most Canadians don’t believe what Stephen Harper is saying about this deal.”

Wrzesnewskyj said Canada

should not be signing free trade agreements “willy nilly” around the globe with countries that have vastly different labour and environmental standards.

Opitz bore the brunt of most of the opposition during the debate, with residents calling him out for spending more than $70,000 public dollars on self-service advertising flyers since 2011.

The Conservative MP defended his spending, saying flyers help inform constituents.

Throughout the evening, DeMello stood up, literally and figuratively, to her counterparts in support of adding more community centres, children’s and seniors’ programming and $15 per day, day care.

During a discussion on cultural rituals, an uproarious applause broke out when DeMello called out the Harper government for not doing an investigation into the hundreds of missing aboriginal women in Canada.

Rizvi sporadically chimed in throughout the night, but kept

quiet through many topics.

He emphasized the need to increase job growth to combat youth unemployment rates.

The Green party also wants to implement a Pharmacare program that would ensure all Canadians have access to a prescription drug plan, which would benefit seniors.

Etobicoke Centre has one of the highest percentages of seniors per capita in Canada.

According to Statistic’s Canada’s Census Profile from 2011, 20.2 per cent of the riding is aged 65-plus.

Opitz spoke to the senior demographic, reiterating the additional $2,000 single senior tax credit that will be available for residents who are concerned about insufficient pension earnings.

Wrzesnewskyj used the topic of taxation to emphasize a seven per cent tax cut for middle-class Canadians, and a higher tax rate for the top one per cent.

What are your priorities for Toronto in this campaign and how will you fight for the city’s needs, if elected?

With humanitarian crises continuing across the globe, what role should Canada play in assisting those people find their better future?

■ We can all agree that we need a better plan to invest in local infrastructure. The Liberal party has this plan and I would fight for local projects to be included, like transforming the former Christie site into a transit hub and funding a new master plan for the Westwood Theatre Lands. We also need to take better care of our seniors, veterans and small businesses. Our plan includes restoring life-long pensions for veterans, increasing payments for seniors and reducing EI premiums and taxes for small businesses.

■ This is an issue that needs collaboration and not partisanship. I believe that Canada does have a role to play in bringing stability to these regions. It was Canada and Liberal PM Lester Pearson who first pioneered the role of peacekeepers. Our plan includes the resettlement of 25,000 Syrian refugees with increased funding to allow for processing without reducing standards. We should also look for ways to support our manufacturing industries by partnering with local firms in defense and logistics spending.

■ Only eight per cent of taxes goes to municipal governments, yet services are largely delivered locally. In addition to the gas tax commitment, a Canadian Infrastructure Bank could provide innovative financing to address our infrastructure deficit, including for public transportation. Retrofitting all buildings for energy efficiency would create local jobs while reducing our carbon footprint. We need a National Housing Strategy and re-investment in affordable housing and co-ops since federal funding is expiring.

■ Our focus should be humanitarian and development assistance in complex conflict zones. We should support the United Nations’ “responsibility to protect” (R2P) doctrine so those fleeing conflict areas are offered protection. We should ensure the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child is at the core of Canadian foreign policy. Climate change mitigation planning is also essential, as many crises have origins in the effects climate change is having in troubled regions.

Canada is soon expected to see a dramatic increase in dementia cases among our senior population. Would you support a national strategy on dementia? What needs to happen to address the issue?

■ The Liberal party has long-called for federal leadership to establish a national Dementia Strategy. Our plan is to provide real action on dementia and repair the federal government’s relationship with the provinces that provide health-care services. Our plan also includes investing in research and prevention so we can delay onset for as long as possible. Alzheimer’s and dementia puts enormous stress on families and our plan to introduce more flexible EI will help support those providing care.

■ This is a very personal issue for me. We support a National Dementia Strategy, which includes more long-term care beds in neighbourhood facilities and improved supports for family members. As part of our National Seniors’ Strategy, providing a Guaranteed Liveable Income, a national Pharmacare plan, a National Housing Plan for home care and changes to the Canada Health Transfer based on age of the population, will help seniors with dementia and all seniors live with dignity and security.

■ I have lived in Etobicoke for nearly 40 years. I am a lawyer and partner at Hughes Amys LLP. I started public office in 2014, when the city appointed me councillor of Ward 5 until the municipal elections could be held. I now want to continue to represent my community and deliver results for Etobicoke-Lakeshore. I currently serve on the board of directors for the Franklin Horner Community Centre and the Catholic Children’s Aid Society. I am also a proud recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Canada is soon expected to see a dramatic increase in dementia cases among our senior population. Would you support a national strategy on dementia? What needs to happen to address the issue?

■ The NDP will seek to tackle gridlock and reduce commute times. Phil and an NDP government will create 54,000 new jobs in construction, manufacturing and infrastructure by providing stable, long-term funding for infrastructure and transit. This will allow municipalities to build and repair much-needed and aging local infrastructure. Municipalities need a federal partner to tackle the infrastructure deficit and we recognize the necessary investment cannot be borne on the property tax base alone.

■ The NDP recently called for a matching by the federal government on all donations made by individuals for the cause of assisting Syrian (and other displaced) refugees. This will support individuals and NGOs seeking to sponsor refugees. In this vein, an NDP government will fast-track private sponsorship with no cap, remove bureaucratic obstacles, treat all refugees equally by ending the Conservative government’s policy of discrimination on the basis of religion and offer temporary resident permits to Syrians with family currently in Canada.

■ The NDP believes the federal government has a larger role to play and will develop a national seniors’ strategy in partnership with the provinces. Items included in this strategy would be an expansion of home and long-term care, an investment in housing that meets the needs of seniors, including trained professionals to assist and care for them. In the instances where family members are caring for seniors with age-related ailments, the NDP will support them through greater tax benefits and stronger EI.

■ Ensure that long-term, predictable (and realistic) federal funding is in place to help build Toronto’s transit and transportation infrastructure. Since 2006, we have invested 300 per cent more on Ontario infrastructure than the previous Liberal government did during its 13 years in power. We doubled the Gas Tax Fund so that Toronto receives over $300 million per year to spend on its priorities. We have committed $2.6 billion for SmartTrack, and over $6 billion per year nationally while balancing the federal budget.

■ Canada’s role is threefold: provide humanitarian assistance, provide asylum for refugees and confront dangerous entities such as ISIS militarily. Canada has provided more than $750 million in relief since the beginning of the crisis in Iraq and Syria, making us the fifth largest donor. We have announced sensible, balanced measures to resettle refugees from the region.

Both Trudeau and Mulcair have promised to abandon our allies and pull the Canadian Armed Forces out of the fight against ISIS.

■ In May, I supported a motion introduced by one of my Conservative colleagues, calling for us to take a leadership role in developing a pan-Canadian strategy for dementia, while respecting provincial jurisdiction. It aims to accelerate the discovery and development of approaches for the prevention, early diagnosis, delay of onset, and treatment of dementia and also continue to invest in research focusing on primary and secondary prevention, and quality of life.

■ I grew up in Chateauguay, Que., and played in a band in my youth. I obtained my law degree from McGill University. I am in private practice in Toronto as a mediator and lawyer.

I live in south Etobicoke in the Park Lawn and Lake Shore Boulevard West neighbourhood.

Centre is the federal riding that is home to one of the highest percentages of ETOBICOKE CENTRE Etobicoke senior residents per capita in the country. According to Statistic’s Canada’s Census Profile of

Etobicoke Centre from 2011, the riding has a population of 113,606 – of which, 20.2 per cent are aged 65-plus, compared to the national average that year of just 14.8 per cent. ■ My priorities for Toronto include improving health care and seniors’ long-term and home care. I want to address the unaffordability of childcare and I believe that the NDP’s initiative for quality $15/day childcare will help young families who are working and but still struggling.

Finally, we desperately need improvements in infrastructure and public transit and allowing the community to set the priorities for those projects. For example basement flooding is a major issue in this riding.

■ New Democrats know that we must help.

Canadians don’t want to stand by and watch as humanitarian crisis continue around the world.

I have worked with the United Nations on three continents; I support the NDP’s plan to help in Syria. An NDP government will respond to the United Nations’ call on Canada to bring 10,000 government-sponsored refugees here by the end of this year. We will settle another 36,000 over the next four years. We’ll also fast-track private sponsorships, to bring as many people to Canada as possible.

■ On top of Stephen Harper’s $2.6 billion commitment to SmartTrack, I have and will continue to advocate for more and more transit and infrastructure funding in Toronto. Our Conservative government invested $12.3 billion in transit, roads and bridges since 2006. We invested responsibly while balancing the budget.

The Liberals invested only $2.3 Billion between 1993 to 2005. The people of Etobicoke Centre need better transportation and infrastructure and I will fight hard to continuing a robust funding program.

■ Only Conservatives will take a balanced stance to help those being driven from their homes by ISIS and the Syrian war. We provide humanitarian aid and refugee resettlement.

We have contributed almost a billion dollars to humanitarian relief and announced our commitment to bring in additional persecuted religious and ethnic minorities. In no way will we ever sacrifice security screening. Militarily, Canada must support our allies and protect our homes, which ISIS and other terror groups have directly threatened.

We will support screening and early diagnosis initiatives so Alzheimer’s and dementia can be identified and treated earlier to stop or slow the progression of the conditions. We will also improve resources and supports for newly diagnosed patients and their families, and boost research funding into Alzheimer’s and dementia

■ Today, I am a Princeton-educated economist, Fulbright Scholar and human rights lawyer and I have worked at the United Nations with refugees on three continents. I have volunteered with many organizations including the Covenant House Shelter, the Red Cross, the United Way and the St. Francis Table as well as abroad. I worked hard at school, and my marks as well as my community service was impressive enough for me to be accepted as one of 200 students from 80 countries in the world to attend Lester B. Pearson United World College.

■ I support our Conservative government’s commitment in health care and dementia research including $42 million to Baycrest Health Sciences to for the establishment of the Canadian Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation. The government has invested more than $860 million in support of neuroscience research allocating $182 million in prevention, diagnosis and care of dementia. We need to do even more to help families and I am committed to see it through.

■ I am proud to be the Member of Parliament for Etobicoke Centre the last four years. I live in the riding I represent in which I have actively volunteered in, especially with youth at risk.

I am a veteran having served for 33 years retiring as lieutenant-colonel. I was military planner for Pope John Paul II and his World Youth Day visit to Canada in 2002 and served in Bosnia. In Parliament I served on the Defence, Immigration, Veterans Affairs and other committees as necessary.

■ Some of my priorities that I would like to address specific to my riding include: Increased funding for public transit infrastructure: More subways, Bus Express ways, light rail; Developing a strategy that supports the growth of small, mid and large retailers in Etobicoke centre to improve the local job market for students.; Making Medicine more affordable and increasing funding for senior care, mental health; Increased funding in education systems including reducing tuition fees for colleges and universities and investing in improving the infrastructure of public schools in the area and across Canada

■ Canada used to be a country renowned for its global reputation of kindness and compassion. From being a key ally of the UN in missions like Rwanda; to being a country proud of multiculturalism and welcoming to refugees.

Canada should reduce its role within NATO combat missions and go back to rebuilding ties with the UN. Canada also needs to do more to accept refugee let it be on a temporary basis or permanently programs need to be in place to protect the rights of diverse Canadians while also allowing opportunities for families to reconnect.

■ Yes, as a nation we are not doing enough for helping citizens with mental health issues, diabetes, MS and other health issues that are increasingly effecting Canadians as whole. I certainly do support a national strategy that will assess and provide effective solutions to improve programs related to supporting our seniors. The Green party as a whole endorses the Canadian Medical Association’s Demand a Plan campaign).

In addition we applaud. the creation of the mental health commission and seek to extend its mandate for another 10 years.

■ Public Transit: A Liberal government will quadruple federal investment in public transit over the next decade by investing an additional $20 billion. We will work with the city to see that local projects in Etobicoke such as the Eglinton Crosstown and Bloor/Dundas lines are prioritized.

Safe Communities: I commit to re-introducing “Boris’ Law,” legislation I introduced in 2010 in memory of Boris Cikovic, that would make bail conditions tougher for crimes committed while in possession of a firearm.

■ I am the son and grandson of political refugees. For my family, Canada was ‘Freedom’s Shores’ and the land of opportunity. They worked hard, and built their new lives and families here.

Many us have lived a similar experience. It’s why we so passionately love our Canada. With government goodwill and proper management, Canada can play an important role internationally and be enriched as a country by helping in the current refugee crises.

■ I will be a strong and tireless advocate for a National Seniors’ Strategy that would include addressing rising dementia rates.

We are the best country on the planet to live in thanks to the hard work of the generations that came before us. Our seniors worked hard all of their lives, built our communities and built this great country. ■ Etobicoke has been our home for over 20 years. However in such a large and lively city Etobicoke has kept its own unique since of culture and communities. We have created a community we can be surely proud of and should be proud of; but we must also understand there is much more to do. From visiting my grandma in west mall and my aunts and uncles in the East mall to my wonderful years in high school where I attended Richview Collegiate Institute Etobicoke Centre has given me so much. Now it is my time to give back.

■ For seven years I worked hard as our Member of Parliament for Etobicoke Centre, serving with integrity and a record of results both locally and in Parliament. What are your priorities for Toronto in this campaign and how will you fight for the city’s needs, if elected?

With humanitarian crises continuing across the globe, what role should Canada play in assisting those people find their better future?

■ My focus will be on fixing the aged infrastructure, social and affordable housing, unemployment and resolving issues faced by new immigrants regarding their integration into Canadian society. Property taxes and land transfer tax will not solve the issues that we are facing here in Toronto. Recognizing the qualification of highly skilled immigrants will make it easy for them to integrate in Canadian system by providing them apprenticeships, paid internships, observerships so that they can stand on their own feet.

■ We should be a constructive participant in our global community, enhancing our peacekeeping capabilities and providing a robust international commitment to United Nations’ missions and disaster-relief. Canada needs to engage in a review of peacekeeping operations, strengthen our capabilities and contribute an effective range of engineering, aircraft, reconnaissance and surveillance services, as well as other humanitarian initiatives. We must recommit to arms control, including working toward rules governing drones and robotic weapons.

■ Toronto needs strong infrastructure, and I’m committed to seeing federal support continue.

It was our government that recently supported Mayor John Tory’s Smart Track project, with an investment of $2.6 billion. The people of Toronto understand the need for better transit options, and this announcement will go a long way to help improve congestion. A strong economy will help create jobs and that is my priority, with continued support for entrepreneurs as the Conservative Party has done through the small business corporate tax rate reduction.

■ Canada continues to be a leader with our immigration and refugee system. Just recently the government announced it will match donations made by Canadians in response to the crisis in Syria. This builds on our significant response to this crisis. Canada is already one of the providers of humanitarian aid to the region, one of the top countries in resettling refugees, and we are participating with our Allies in the international coalition taking the fight to ISIS.

■ Akhtar Ayub is a first generation immigrant to Canada, and along with his wife and two children is proud to call Etobicoke home. A mechanical engineering graduate from Pakistan, Akhtar studied Automotive Technology in New York, and now works as a service consultant to the auto industry. Akhtar is a strong believer in respect, diversity, personal and global responsibilities, non-violence, social justice and equal opportunities. Akhtar has always been politically minded, and in 2014 ran as a candidate for Toronto City Council in Etobicoke North.

■ The health and well-being of our senior population is important to me, and under a Conservative government, seniors issues have been a priority. Economic Action Plan 2015 continues our record of strong support of seniors, including measures like the establishment of the Canadian Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation, to help discover new tools to help seniors with aging and brain-related issues. I believe these are the types of measures needed to address this issue.

■ Active, passionate, effective: Toyin Dada is a long-term resident of our community where she currently lives, was raised, educated and has a proven track record of advocacy and service (Elmbank Community Centre, Albion Boys and Girls Club, Rotary Etobicoke etc). Toyin is the director of a non-profit organization; a leader, social worker and artist, with a bachelor of science from York. ■ The burden of caring for dementia cases initially falls on elderly spouses and their immediate families. We need to find new interventions including ways to support caregivers and improve both quality of life for affected families while minimizing health-care cost. I will support all the groups and research institutes working on the projects to eradicate dementia by doubling the funding of clinical research projects across Canada and support a core set of clinical research centres across Canada.

Would you support a national strategy on dementia? What needs to happen to address the issue?

■ Every dollar we invest in public infrastructure here in Toronto grows our economy, creates jobs and strengthens our cities. We believe government has a responsibility to act decisively and for the public good. Canada’s economic growth was made possible by building ambitiously. We must do so again if we are to transform our transit and transportation systems, create more liveable communities and ensure we adapt to a changing climate.

■ Canada can and must do more to help those in need. That is why a Liberal government will: Expand Canada’s intake to 25,000 refugees from Syria through immediate, direct sponsorship by the government of Canada; Invest at least an additional $100 million this fiscal year to increase – without reducing standards – refugee processing, as well as sponsorship and settlement services capacity in Canada; Provide an immediate $100 million new contribution to the UNHCR to support the critical relief activities in the region.

■ I have long called for federal leadership to establish a pan-Canadian Dementia Strategy to address Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia. A Liberal government will provide this leadership for real action on a pan-Canadian dementia strategy. We will repair the federal government’s relationship with the provinces and ensure federal collaboration with provincial and territorial partners to tackle dementia. By investing in research and prevention we can help Canadians live with the best possible quality of life.

■ I was born and raised in Etobicoke and it has been an honour to serve this community since 2008. My constituency office is one of the busiest in the country, serving dozens of families a day, working on important issues such as immigration, pensions and finding employment. I was elected to serve this community.

I love this job because every day I get to help our Etobicoke North family succeed.

■ As one of Canada’s most important cities, the federal government needs to be an active partner with Toronto’s municipal government to improve infrastructure, public transit and employment opportunities. As your MP I will fight for the funding required to improve access to public transit and our crumbling infrastructure. By doing so, we can create jobs for young people and encourage economic growth and innovation.

■ Canada has a proud history as a respected voice for peace and diplomacy on the world stage. Under Stephen Harper, our reputation has been damaged. An NDP government would work to restore Canada’s place in the world as one that works with the global community to find peaceful solutions to emerging crises. We would work in the United Nations, with our allies and across divides to find peaceful solutions to emerging global crises.

■ The NDP has put forth a national strategy to support families dealing with dementia.

Specifically, an NDP government would work with the provinces and invest $40 million into a national strategy. Our strategy would support screening, improve resources for newly diagnosed patients and fund additional Alzheimers and dementia research. This will bring governments, researchers, the Alzheimer society and others together to maximize support for patients and families.

■ My name is Faisal Hassan, your NDP candidate for Etobicoke North. I am a proud resident of Etobicoke North. In 1990, I immigrated to Canada in my late teens with nothing but the clothes on my back. I’m a graduate of the University of Winnipeg and Humber College.

Two more suspects arrested in shooting death of Neeko Mitchell Police have arrested two more suspects in connection with the 2013 executionstyle murder of 25-year-old Neeko Mitchell outside a north Etobicoke community centre.

Mitchell was gunned down in what police have called a “targeted” shooting on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, shortly after arriving at the North Kipling Community Centre (located near Kipling and Finch West avenues) at around 8:11 p.m.

“Neeko, like so many others that night, was at the community centre to see a basketball tournament. Not very long after he arrived, Neeko was sought out by others present at the tournament and was, for all intents and purposes, ambushed and killed execution style,” Det. Sgt. Brian Borg said at a press confer-

ence last June, noting Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene and had “no chance of survival.”

Shortly after the shooting, police released the images of three suspects captured by numerous closed-circuit cameras at the city-run community centre on the night of Mitchell’s murder.

Until recently, only two suspects had been arrested in connection with the case.

Suspected triggerman Reshane Hayles-Wilson, of Mississauga, was arrested on a Canada-wide arrest warrant on Sept. 22, 2014 and charged with first-degree murder. He was additionally charged this week with participation in the activities of a criminal organization.

Meanwhile, Tyrone Michael Knott, of Toronto, was arrested on June 23, 2014 and charged with accessory after the fact to murder for his alleged role in assisting Hayles-Wilson in the

immediate time period after Mitchell’s murder.

On Thursday, Oct. 1, homicide investigators, with assistance from Toronto Police Service Guns and Gangs, arrested two additional men.

Jermaine Dunkley, 30, of Mississauga, has been charged with: first-degree murder; participation in the activities of a criminal organization; and instructing commission of offence for criminal organization.

Sheldon Tingle, 34, of Brampton, has been charged with: first-degree murder; and participation in the activities of a criminal organization.

Dunkley, Tingle and HaylesWilson are all scheduled to appear in court on Friday, Oct. 2.

Toronto landmarks may get name on LRT station stops The Ontario Science Centre and the Aga Khan Museum are some of the landmarks Metrolinx is proposing to use as inspiration for names of future LRT stations on the Eglinton Crosstown line.

Naming stations after tourist attractions is relatively unique for Toronto, although that seems to be changing. The TTC board recently eschewed its traditional practice of using streets for names when it approved a planned subway stop on the Spadina subway line to be named after nearby Black Creek Pioneer Village.

History could be housed in Old City Hall DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com The drab provincial courtrooms of Old City Hall could be transformed in part into a museum celebrating the history of Toronto, once the province vacates the cityowned building for a new “super court” to be constructed behind Toronto’s current city hall.

Toronto’s Government Management Committee voted to give city staff two years to consult with the public and study the feasibility of building a 30,000 square foot city museum within the 160,000 square feet of usable space in the building at the corner of Queen and Bay streets – and also consider what complementary uses might make sense for the remainder of the heritage building.

Currently, the distinctive structure is home to provincial courts, which lease the space from the city at $40 a square foot. The site will be vacated as soon as the province completes its new court buildings on Chestnut Street between five and seven years from now. When that happens, Toronto City Council will have full access to the building, and proponents of a long-delayed City of Toronto Museum, using archival and donated materials to tell Toronto’s story, argued the original City Hall building was an ideal site.

Lawyer George Rust D’Eye, who chaired a task force in the 1980s that recommended such a museum, said he and other proponents have long had their eye on the iconic building. “It’s fair to say there was an overwhelming direction that the Old City Hall

be restored and that it be used as a museum for the City of Toronto,” he said. “It would make the entire building available to the public.

It would highlight our most important heritage buildings and it would provide a lasting means by which the city could utilize its large number of historical resources.”

The committee also had before it a report from the city’s real estate suggesting the bulk of the site be leased to a property management company that would lease parts of the space out to other retail businesses effectively creating an indoor shopping mall. That plan received little traction at the committee, although Ward 2 Councillor Rob Ford said the city should look at leasing most of the facility to an operator who would create “a nice hotel”, and fancy restaurant.”

T

his was supposed to be their time.

With their son off to university and successful careers behind them, Bruce Rhodes and his wife, Liz, both 58, had expected these would be the years to reap the rewards of a full life together.

Instead, they are battling a disease together, one they both, at times, believe is worse than death.

“Ohhh, I am an idiot!” said Liz as she hops up and down in their sunny Richmond Hill kitchen.

“My brain is broken,” she smacks her hands against her head, letting out a long, keening wail.

Bruce pays no mind to her bizarre behaviour, grateful she is no longer talking about hating herself and wanting to die.

“We were so perfectly matched,” said Bruce, a retired software developer. “We were intellectually compatible and I trusted her completely.”

Now, due to dementia, their world has shrunk, travel and social gatherings long past.

Bruce spends his time trying to

keep Liz safe, fed, bathed and properly medicated, struggling not to turn to booze or bash a hole in the wall in frustration.

Liz, who was an author and university professor before frontotemporal dementia began destroying her brain, now lives in her own private world of confusion, battling his efforts to care for her, struggling to escape.

He can’t leave her alone and they rarely leave home. Outings are challenging and at times embarrassing, said Bruce, with his beloved wife now behaving like an unruly five year old.

“Dementia is vicious, just vicious,” he said.

It can be a lonely existence for the caregiver who must bear the burden of day-to-day life and for the person with dementia whose increasing confusion can leave them housebound and isolated.

Research has shown connected people are healthy people, and yet the Alzheimer’s Society 2014 survey reports 40 per cent of people with dementia felt lonely and 34 per

Caregivers reported the same.

“It’s a family illness,” said occupational therapist Nira Rittenberg.

“It affects the person cognitively and emotionally. Caregiving time is intense.”

Rittenberg, co-author of the guidebook Dementia: A Caregiver’s Guide, oversees a psycho-educational support group. Families make the trek to Baycrest Health Sciences in Toronto seeking her help for a myriad of concerns – from what to do when

the patient doesn’t want to attend doctor appointments or asks the same question repeatedly, to issues stirred up between siblings caring for parents.

There is an emotional toll, “losing that personhood is hard for everyone to watch,” along with a physical and financial one, and it may be why 80 per cent of caregivers end up with their own disorders and issues, she said.

The person with dementia, meanwhile, finds himself increasingly isolated.

In a n A l z h e i m e r D i s e a s e International survey of more than 2,400 people from 54 countries, more than 75 per cent of respondents with dementia said they’ve noticed a negative stigma about the disease, most commonly being discounted or marginalized by others.

Kuriakose is calling for urgent action and said the focus on late-stage dementia and a belief that nothing can be done to help leads to hopelessness and fear of negative reactions.

“People start fearing ‘viral dementia,’” Rittenberg said. “It’s not that they think they’ll ‘catch’ it, but they may hide from it because they can’t deal with it, especially if they’re of the same age cohort.”

Unlike those with physical challenges, there is no wheelchair or visible indication of a disability. As one patient puts it, “when something’s wrong with your mind, it feels like something is wrong with you.”

In the early stages, those with dementia may become withdrawn, aware they can’t keep up in social settings, but Maisie Jackson is determined not to let that happen.

dates that citizens older than 65 be checked for dementia symptoms and in each of the city’s 25 urban districts, a dementia centre offers activities and social connections.

A rapid-response support team made up of nurses, support workers and psychiatrists acts as a safety net to help those with dementia stay out of hospital. The team provides crisis support in the patient’s home

and has been able to reduce the rate of hospital admissions and length of hospital stays.

GERMANY Germany’s Alzheimer Society hosts a website called ‘Alzheimer and You’ aimed at people aged 14 to 21. It’s part of a national program to help youth understand dementia and includes tips, memory tests, contests and project ideas for schools.

SCOTLAND The concept of dementia dogs is being explored in Scotland to help those with mild cognitive impairment maintain their waking, sleeping and eating routine, remind them to take medication and stay active in the community. “I thought the end had come, my life was over. I didn’t tell anyone.”

She worried she would waste away like her mother, aunt and older sister before her, alone in a rocking chair, clutching a baby doll.

Instead, she clutches a thick daybook jam-packed with appointments, conferences and meetings at the local Alzheimer’s society.

“The society gave me my life back,” said the former director of sales at Niagara’s Pillar and Post Inn. Her days are busy mentoring others, attending board meetings and giving presentations across the province. She no longer hides her diagnosis.

“If I’m having trouble, I just say ‘Give me a moment please, I have dementia.’”

Communicating with others about the disease has given her life new purpose, she said.

Jackson has learned life does not end when the diagnosis begins. A slew of promising new programs bolsters that view – from as far away as the Netherlands, where an entire enclosed village was created for dementia residents, to the Kawartha town of Bobcaygeon, where Blue Umbrella logos open doors, and minds, for those experiencing cognitive decline.

During the summer months, Bobcaygeon is bustling with tourists, cottagers and retirees.

It’s also speckled with little Blue Umbrella decals that let those with dementia know they

are welcome.

The Blue Umbrella is a unique project garnering interest across Canada.

Designed to combat stigma and promote awareness, the program provides umbrella pins to those with dementia.

Window decals are given to businesses trained to help with challenges such as bank machines, crowded spaces and communicating with staff.

Nearly 50 of an estimated 200 Bobcaygeon residents with dementia have registered to wear the pins since it was launched last April, said Pat Finkle, the local Alzheimer Society’s former client support co-ordinator.

About 70 businesses have joined so far.

“We’ve done phenomenally well,” Finkle said.

“People are talking about it more and the person with dementia is being talked with more, too, and engaged in the community. The more people who are out wearing that blue umbrella, the more we are changing the perception of what dementia is.”

Buoyed by the Bobcaygeon success, the Alzheimer Society of Ontario has decided to expand the program to five more communities across the province and is seeking funding to help make it grow.

A similar program, Dementia Friends, was launched in June through the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

The society received $1.8 million in federal funding to launch the program and hopes to encourage a million Canadians to sign on at www.DementiaFriends.ca by 2017.

This is the most common cause of dementia. It accounts for 60 to 80 per cent of cases. During the course of the disease, the chemistry and structure of the brain changes, leading to the death of brain cells.

FTD is caused by progressive nerve cell loss in the brain’s frontal lobes. Personality and behaviour are initially more affected than memory. People with FTD generally develop symptoms at a younger age (about age 60).

If the oxygen supply to the brain fails, brain cells may die. The symptoms of vascular dementia can occur either suddenly, following a stroke, or over time, through a series of small strokes.

This form of dementia gets its name from tiny spherical structures that develop inside nerve cells. Their presence in the brain leads to the degeneration of brain tissue.

s a young volunteer and recreation therapist working in long-term care homes, Ashley Kwong saw the worst of the worst.

“I saw it all, from cockroach-laden plates, food all pureed together, to residents who’d strip down because they had no AC and then get yelled at by staff,” she recalls. “I felt powerless; who could I call?”

She decided to tackle the problem herself, returning to university to study gerontology, then establishing her own service for those with dementia – one that is getting noticed worldwide.

Memory & Company doesn’t look like a daycare for people with dementia and it doesn’t bill itself as such, either.

Instead, it’s referred to as Canada’s first Alzheimer’s health club.

Tucked inside an industrial park in Markham, the 11,000-square-foot facility is custom-designed to meet the needs of those with dementia with a “club-like, non-institutional

feel.”

Unlike most daycare programs, this centre features multiple, brightly lit activity rooms connected in a circular layout, allowing clients to wander securely (without agitating doors and dead-ends) and choose

activities that interest them.

One library-like room is filled with coffee table books, records and magazines, another music room has iPads downloaded with favourite songs, photos and videos, old-fashioned turntables, cassette decks and musical instruments. A dress-up room offers a vintage makeup table with jewelry, purses and a camera for fun photo shoots, another resembles an office with maps, puzzles and older office equipment clients might recognize from their working days.

“We have to get people to change their mindset for what day programs can be,” Kwong said.

Society is increasingly focused on aging in place, but few options for meaningful activity or relationships are available for those with dementia at home except occasional respite and the TV, she said.

“People want to enjoy their day no matter who they are,” Kwong said.

Golden Eagles basketball club announces expansion The South Toronto Golden Eagles Basketball Club is kicking off its third season by announcing its expansion.

In addition to its established house league program for kids aged eight to 12, this year the Mimicobased basketball club has not only been given the approval from the Ontario Basketball Association to host

a Rep competitive team for boys under 13, but has also partnered with Junior NBA Canada for a program catering to boys and girls aged five to seven.

“We are excited for the opportunities this provides to kids in our community,” club founder Chris Marcinkiewicz said of the Golden Eagles’ expanded programming this

year.

“We try to keep our registration fees relatively low so that money does not come in the way of a child’s participation.”

This will be followed by two Rep Team try-out sessions on Friday, Oct. 23 and Friday, Oct. 30, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Ambrose, at a cost of $5 per tryout.

Lucky Lion marked start of the Queen Elizabeth Way

T

oday, few Torontonians know that we have our very own “Lucky Lion.”

It arrived on this monument in 1939 to honour the new Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), North America’s first real “super highway.”

Children especially were captivated by the lion and looked for it as their parents drove by. Soon children and adults alike were greeting the lion for good luck.

Originally located in Etobicoke, just west of the Humber River, this monument marked one terminus of the highway; the other end was the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls.

The highway was named for Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Consort of King George VI, and they officially opened the highway in St. Catharines on June 7, 1939.

The monument’s column was designed by architect W.L. Somerville.

Toronto sculptor Frances Loring designed the lion for the base.

denise harris history corner Her fellow sculptor and life partner, Florence Wyle, modelled the crown on top and a relief portrait of the King and Queen.

The lion statue was the most challenging piece Loring ever completed. A stone carver was needed to implement her design in limestone, but all carvers she trusted were of German or Italian background, so none were considered acceptable during the war.

Florence ended up with an English carver who resented taking direction from a woman. When he made an unauthorized change to her design, she fired him and did the carving herself.

This work had to be done in situ on the QEW, exposed to November’s bitter winds. She hadn’t carved stone in 30 years, and had never used power tools before, but when finished, her sculpture was a triumph.

Loring was clear that her lion was a symbol of Britain at the start of the war. She precisely captured the tension in the lion as it rises defiantly from a reclining position to fight Germany.

Her statue was praised as “the finest piece of architectural sculpture in the country.”

For more 30 years, our Lucky Lion stood on the QEW median, until an expansion to 12 lanes was announced. The monument had to be removed, and demolition was a possibility.

However, a tremendous outpouring of public support led to it being moved in 1974 to the east side of the Humber River in Sir Casimir Gzowski Park.

The monument is barely visible from the highway today, but the Lucky Lion that many of us remember from our childhoods is safe.

Pink Lady Gala a tribute to breast cancer survivors Hosted on Oct. 17 by Famous PEOPLE Players CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com On the verge of marking seven years cancer-free, Diane Dupuy and her Famous PEOPLE Players are set to host the Pink Lady Gala later this month.

Described by Dupuy as a family-friendly “celebration of life”, the tribute to breast cancer survivors will take place on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 17 – featuring a black-light cocktail party, three-course gourmet meal, and a specially adapted version of Famous PEOPLE Players’ most recent black-light theatre hit, Under the Big Top. “The Pink Lady Gala is important because it’s a celebration of life. I get tired of hearing about the doom and gloom and the sadness and all this business, because you know what? Breast cancer is not a death sentence anymore like people think,” said Dupuy, a breast cancer survivor who founded Etobicoke’s worldrenowned black-light puppetry theatre.

“We should be celebrating. We should be so grateful that we’ve gotten through what we’ve gotten through, and giving hope to other people that are going through it now.”

“When I was sick, I noticed a lot of people in the chemo lounge: women who would come in and say ‘I’m sick, I’m sick. I’m going to go home and go to bed, then I’ll come back for more chemo, then I’ll go back to bed.’ But I don’t think that’s the way to get well,” she said of the message she tried to convey in Cocktails at the Chemo Lounge.

“I’m not saying everyone has to do what I did in the book – I went from getting chemo, to going straight to the construction site where we were building Famous PEOPLE Players, and running around like crazy raising money.

“But you do have to keep your mind off the negative and keep it on the positive. I’ve told people many times: prayers don’t change things, prayers change people and people change things.”

The Pink Lady Gala kicks off with a Black Light Cocktail Party by Cheese Boutique at 6 p.m., featuring both alcoholic and

non-alcoholic glow-in-thedark cocktails, followed by a three-course gourmet meal by Celebrity Chef Christopher Woods at 7 p.m. (steak, salmon and vegetarian options available).

After dinner, attendees will then enjoy a “stunning” adaptation of Famous PEOPLE Players’ Under the Big Top show – a visual black light performance where props come to life to music from the 1940s and ’50s, while the “Ring Master extraordinaire” has the theatre’s most famous characters jumping to the beat of his drum and the sting of his whip.

“It’s going to be a wonderful Saturday night where you can bring your whole family – even the kids and grandkids,” Dupuy said of the Pink Lady Gala, which will be capped off at 9 p.m. with an encore dessert and coffee.

“I always do encourage people to bring their grandchildren, because they always say ‘Oh, they wouldn’t be interested in a gala’, but, trust me, they would love this gala. It really is going to be absolutely wonderful.”

The Pink Lady Gala takes place on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Famous PEOPLE Players’ Dine and Dream Theatre, 343 Evans Ave. (east of Kipling Avenue).
