TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Cynthia McDonagh and her husband winter in Phoenix, AZ so they’re all-too-familiar with coyotes roaming neighbourhoods from dusk till dawn. But when McDonagh saw a poster warning of a badly injured coyote roaming her Richmond Report coyote Gardens’ sighting neighbourhood in broad specifics to daylight, she 311; Toronto took action. Animal Services The poster reads, “Coyote killing cats in Richmond Gardens.” It shows a photo of a coyote, its right front and back legs raw and red, in the park behind Silver Creek Nursery. It warns of five cats killed or gone missing in the area in the past month. It urges area cat owners to keep their pets indoors. ‘Awesomeness’ spreads at St. John Vianney Best-selling author Neil Pasricha brings Awesome Project to Rexdale school to promote love of reading

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Awesome was everywhere at St. John Vianney Catholic School this week. It was in the classrooms, where stacks of awesome brand new storybooks waited to be taken home by their new owners. It was in the hallways, where colourful, student-created collages, posters and drawings celebrated the awesomeness of life. And last, but not least, it was in the gym, where special guest – and New York Times best-selling author of The Book of Awesome – Neil Pasricha read to all 372 St. John Vianney students from his newly launched children’s book, Awesome is Everywhere. All of that awesomeness came courtesy of the aptly named Awesome Project – a literacy initiative launched by First Book Canada, Rakuten Kobo and Penguin Random House Canada that will, by the end of the week, see 10,000 new books and educational resources distributed to five southern Ontario elementary schools in order to help foster the love of reading amongst underprivileged students. Being part of such an undertaking, Pasricha said, is, well, “awesome.” “There’s so much life here, so much energy. “They’ve decorated all the walls and given me such a great greeting...I feel like I’m The Beatles landing at Shea Stadium. “It feels pretty special,” the Oshawa native said of his visit with St. John Vianney students on Tuesday, the second stop on his Awesome Project tour. “Of course, it’s not about me, though. It’s about the power of books – and the premise of my book is that awesome really is everywhere. So, what I hope happens is that the book inspires in these students a feeling of appreciation and of mindfulness and of gratitude.” Helping to achieve those desired feelings of gratitude on Tuesday

was the Awesome Project’s donation of 1,500 new books – including signed copies of Pasricha’s Awesome is Everywhere for every Grade 1 student – which did, indeed, leave the St. John Vianney school community feeling very thankful.

“Every year we get some brand new books donated from First Book Canada to give to our students, and this year we’re very lucky and fortunate to be awarded with more than 1,500 books,” said Principal Vince Moretti, who noted the school also

received a $1,000 grant to purchase even more books and Kobo eReaders through the First Book Canada marketplace. “This is a very multi-ethnic community, where many of our students speak languages other than English at home. And so they appreciate and

enjoy the books that are given to them, as well as the hard work our staff put into projects like this.” Rose Lucentini, an early literacy intervention teacher, was one of a team of St. John Vianney staff members – which also included Mrs. Quaglietta, Ms. Garisto, Ms. DeLaurentis, Mr. De Vuono, and Ms. Scarano – who were integral to the school being selected for participation in the Awesome Project and its bounty of free books. “That fact that we got chosen for this ‘awesome’ event is even more inspiring, because it’s spreading the whole love of literacy to the kids from a different perspective,” Lucentini said. “What I love about it is that it’s promoting a life-long love of reading. The idea is for the students to build their very own library at home.” According to First Book Canada, helping to build such home libraries often helps improve literacy in the home – with 70 per cent of children who received books though First Book Canada reporting increased reading at home. “We’re all about access to books for all children, all across the country. It would be sad if there were kids that just didn’t have books in their homes, and that’s what we’re trying to change,” First Book Canada Executive Director Tom Best told students during Tuesday’s assembly. “All these books you see behind me and all the books that are in the library, they’re for you...My hope is that they’ll help you escape to all sorts of awesome places.” For more information, go to www. firstbookcanada.org

ith fall’s darker days now taking hold, and the turning back of the clocks early this Sunday morning as we go back to standard time, pedestrians are at an increased risk of being struck by a vehicle on our city’s streets. Toronto police will be warning drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to be extra cautious once Daylight Savings Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday. Caution should be the operative word at all times, but it’s especially important in these dark days of November as the number of incidents in which pedestrians are struck by vehicles rises significantly in Toronto. The first week of November last year saw five incidents in the city involving pedestrians being struck in one day (Tuesday, Nov. 4, two days after Daylight Savings Time ended). What we – drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and everyone else who uses our roads – need to do is be that much more aware of the dangers, focus on the safety of all, and take some basic precautions to increase the odds of everyone our view going about their day safely, but especially in the morning and evening rush hours. That’s when We can all the advancing darkness, along take basic with confusion due to the time in the morning hours, precautions change has its greatest impact on the roads. The most dangerous time of day is between 5 and 7 p.m., police say. Pedestrians being struck by drivers making left turns are the most common incident, as it takes a moment for driver’s eyes to adjust from the brightness of the headlights coming toward them to the darker intersection. This problem is made worse if the pedestrian crossing is wearing dark clothing. Obviously, pedestrians need to think about wearing brighter clothing and not to be distracted by cellphones while crossing the street. Along with the increased need for caution Sunday due to the time change, we also remind our readers to be extra careful on the roads Halloween night this Saturday as excited trick-or-treaters hit the streets. By taking a few moments to think, and being aware of the increased dangers, we can make this Halloween and November safer for all.

Trudeau’s election comes with lack of mandate Politics often seems a kind of echo chamber. Themes and movements bounce back and forth, distorting as they go but recognizable for longer than might make sense. It’s tempting to trace the election of Justin Trudeau’s majority back through the election of Kathleen Wynne, the improbable spectacle of an NDP government in Alberta – even the ascent of gentleman John Tory in Toronto – as a particularly resonant echo. nod to the left wing All of these elections mark a repudiation of the hard right conservatism exemplified by the nowformer Harper government, the Progressive Conservatives in Ontario, the depraved populism of Etobicoke’s Ford family, and a nod, at least, to the left wing big-government ideas that the New Democratic Party used to get behind.

david nickle the city In none of these cases, of course, is it a sea-change toward precisely those ideas. When Tory won the 2014 Toronto mayoralty race on a platform of big transit infrastructure and progressive social policies, he was closely followed by Doug Ford in support, leaving New Democrat candidate Olivia Chow in the dust. Similarly, Wynne and Trudeau may have their majority governments, but they didn’t mop the floor with their right-leaning opponents. Trudeau did very well, but it was hardly a rout. If Harper had chosen to stay, he would have led a healthy official opposition – a far cry from the electoral massacre visited upon the federal Progressive Conservatives in 1993, when the caucus

was reduced to only two. Lots of people supported Harper, and the Fords, and former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak in his plan to gut the public service. The common thread? Lots more people decided that they definitively did not want any of those politicians anywhere near the levers of power, and collectively sent someone else along instead. voter trust It’s a funny sort of mandate – not really a mandate at all, when you think of it – that makes it more difficult than usual to chart success. Do a plurality of people in Toronto really think Tory’s central campaign promise of building SmartTrack is a good idea, or are they just relieved to know that the Fords won’t be in power? Voter trust in Ontario Premier Wynne is a big

question, as her Liberal government embarks on a very Conservativesounding sell-off of Hydro One. And as for Justin Trudeau and the new Liberal government in Ottawa: do his supporters also support his deficitrunning plan, his support of Bill C-51 in some form or another, or whatever else the Liberals choose to bring about? Perhaps, but it appears from polls and the numbers that what Trudeau’s supporters really want is that he replace Stephen Harper. This is the downside of strategic voting. It is both a way of saying what it is that you don’t want, and not particularly caring about what it is you do. The echo is, as echoes often are, discouragingly empty. Readers hoping to have their copy of The Hill of Feelings signed by the author at Sunday’s book launch in Etobicoke needed to look no further than the bouncy castle. S e v e n - y e a r- o l d L e i a Sotiropoulos, decked out in snazzy glasses and a fancy party dress, was joined by dozens of energetic kids and their parents at Relax Lounge on Lake Shore Boulevard to celebrate the publication of an inspiring story she wrote when she was just four. “When I was a little kid, I wanted to learn to write,” Leia said. The four-foot tall dynamo, who most would still call a “little kid,” gives readers an inside look into a child’s emotional experience through her story of two friends: Annabelle and Charlotte. In The Hill of Feelings, a hill is used to anthropomorphically represent the different emotions Annabelle encounters when Charlotte antagonizes her. When Annabelle is sad, the hill is blue. When she’s feeling brave, it’s bright purple. In the end, Annabelle draws a

picture of the hill using all the colours of the rainbow. Leia, who admitted to feeling shy at the launch, said she wants people who read her book to know that everyone has feelings – good and bad. “All feelings are okay,” she said. L e i a ’s a u n t E f f i e Sotiropoulos worked with her to finalize the story, found an illustrator to bring the words to life and went through the lengthy process of self-publishing. “Her story really moved me,” Effie said. “I thought this was such a simple way to display problems that we have at every age, and I thought publishing a book would give Leia something she could cherish forever and will inspire her when she’s older.” Effie, who is also a writer, said she hopes the book inspires people to pay attention to the way they feel and trust their instincts. “You should make decisions based on your feelings,” she said. “It’s about making smart choices with the people you choose to be around.” Leia’s mom Helen was feeling pure happiness and pride at Sunday’s event. “You wish the best for your kid, then they do something

like this that completely blows things out of the water,” she said. She said when Leia was in kindergarten, she went through the difficult process of trying to make new friends. “She wrote this story as a way of expressing herself and the challenges she was going through,” Helen said. “Her story really touches you.” Leia’s dad Bill was in awe of his daughter’s accomplishment, and said the whole celebration seemed surreal. He sees more writing in his daughter’s future. “She’s really creative,” he said. “She’s always coming up with great ideas.” Effie is looking into signing a distribution deal for The Hill of Feelings and hopes to see the colourful children’s book on store shelves in the near future. “Today will end this chapter, and now we start a new one,” Effie said. Constant hugs from friends and family, a candy buffet, a hip-hop performance, bouncy castles and a room full of toys at Sunday’s launch brought Leia out of her shell and left her feeling her all-time favourite emotion. “Today, I feel happy,” she said.

Mabelle youth and children from the Dixon Road area go head-to-head in a soccer tournament in August. CultureLink is developing a high school drop-out prevention program for Grade 8 students of Somali descent who attend Islington Junior Middle School near Mabelle, and for Runnymede Collegiate students in grades 9 and 10.

Keeping Somali students in school TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The Ontario government is funding a three-year program to support 90 students of Somali descent in Etobicoke and in York with mentors, individualized learning plans, and parental academic involvement to reduce Toronto Somali students’ high school dropout rate. Ontario is investing just over $750,000 to help settlement services agency CultureLink implement and evaluate the program, which will monitor academic performance and class attendance, and work with teachers to support student success. A 2014 Toronto District School Board (TDSB) report indicated among nearly 6,000 self-identified Somalispeaking students, 25 per cent had dropped out of school, compared to 14 per cent of students overall from 2006 to 2011. Some 83 per cent of those Somali students are Canadian-born. CultureLink will deliver and evaluate the program with grades 8, 9 and 10 students at two schools for which it currently provides settlement workers: Islington

in high school by adopting a model in the U.S. tested for success called Check & Connect,” CultureLink executive director Ibrahim Absiye said. “We’re partnering with parents, recruiting a group of 18 successful role models to mentor the youth. The objective is to see them graduate high school.” Check & Connect is a U.S.-based and developed intervention program to reduce student dropout rates. A trained mentor implements Check & Connect with learning for marginal-

ized, disengaged students in Kindergarten to Grade 12 through relationship building, problem solving and capacity building, and persistence. Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Education endorsed Check & Connect evidence of a 25 per cent decrease in high school dropout rates among 238 Minnesota Grade 9 students identified with a learning, emotional or behavioural disability. Etobicoke-Lakeshore MPP Peter Milczyn said CultureLink’s program will make a “meaningful and long-term” difference to students. “The mentorship program is an excellent way of making sure students stay on track with their academic goals, as well as providing individualized one-on-one support when needed,” Milczyn said. Last year, the TDSB began working on an action plan to offer students of Somali descent more help, which sparked an outcry by some parents who charged the move would stigmatize their

children. The report’s 23 recommendations were borne of a special 22-person task force the board created in 2013 at the request of Somali families who wanted more supports for their children. TDSB statistics found 74 per cent of Somali-speaking students, versus 49 per cent of board students overall, were in one or more of these categories: enrolled in special education, suspended in the past or fell below provincial standard achievement on Grade 6 EQAO test results. Data suggests the students are also less likely than the board average to apply to college and university. “There will be a strong mentorship component, absolutely. But we want young people to come up with their own strategies and support that,” said Amina Yassin-Omar, CultureLink’s assistant manager of research, development and program extension, said of the program. “We want to create a family around these students. Connect with parents to understand the language

and cultural piece. If Kid X is not coming to school, is it because he or she is sick, has no TTC tokens, no food? We want to make sure we have a safety net available.” Abdi Yousuf, CultureLink’s assistant manager of its Se t t l e m e n t Wo rk e r s i n Schools program, began working with the agency 17 years ago as a settlement worker in Islington Junior Middle School. CultureLink offers an after-school program in the Mabelle community near the Islington school that offers homework help and workshops. “In my experience, it’s highly encouraging,” he said. “If programs like this at Islington and Runnymede have an impact on these kids going to university, that’s great. We’ll run workshops on self-esteem, leadership building. Checking on families as a whole and owning that child.” Yousuf said he does not agree with some Somali parents who charge the board’s task force recommendations on special help is not needed

and will further stigmatize their children and their community. “I’m aware of the resistance of some people to homework help and supports,” Yousuf said. “We’re offering mentor support for their kids. It works with all of them. It’s not labeling or stigmatizing. It’s not special education. It’s extra support. We’re instilling in them the goods needed to go through high school.” CultureLink, and the Ontario government, are keen to duplicate to gather evidence in the program to duplicate its success with students across the province. “With this funding, CultureLink will be able to evaluate its service delivery model and help us learn more about what approaches are making a difference for youth facing poverty in communities across Ontario,” Deb Matthews, deputy premier and minister responsible for the Ontario government’s poverty reduction strategy, said in a statement.

This aerial photo of the ‘Turkey Palace’, a restaurant that once stood on the north side of Richview Side Road (now Eglinton Avenue West), east of Hwy. 27 is one of the most requested old photos of Etobicoke. Around 1945, Bert Hedges bought a small farm to raise turkeys. He built this restaurant, mounted a large turkey

denise harris history corner

Photo Spotlight sign on the roof and advertised that he sold “Turkey, Anyhow.” This photo’s popularity stems from fond memories of stopping at Bert’s for turkey

burgers and milkshakes after school dances. Following Bert’s death in 1965, the property was demolished to make way for a new Hwy. 401/427 interchange.

>>>from page 1 “My husband has seen the coyote twice walk past our house,” she said. “We were out walking our dog. An elderly resident told us to be careful. There are so many seniors in this neighbourhood, mothers and fathers pushing strollers and walking their dog.” McDonagh said residents report the coyote has been seen in Richview Plaza’s parking lot, and in the yard of an elementary school. Baker’s office reported they informed the Ministry of Natural Resources about the roaming coyote. Campbell said he left a message with the Toronto Wildlife Centre. The city’s Toronto Animal Services (TAS) responds to residents’ inquiries and complaints, but has no record of any residents’ complaints of the coyote in the Richmond Gardens’ area, in particular the southwest areas of The Westway and Islington Avenue, the city’s coyote lead confirmed Tuesday, Oct. 27. “I was surprised, actually,” Sheena Rodda, TAS supervisor for the north region, said when told of the coyote sightings by The Guardian. “I checked. TAS hasn’t had any coyote sightings reported in that area.” Further, an online Toronto Coyote Sightings Map from 2013 to now indicates no reported coyote sightings in the area since 2014. McDonagh said she called the city’s 311 number and was directed to the Toronto Wildlife Centre, not TAS. Rodda urged concerned residents to call 311 to report sightings of the coyote, and to ask their report be forwarded to the city’s TAS. Residents may also make a report to TAS online at http://cityoftoronto. fluidsurveys.com/s/torontocoyotes “Someone needs to lodge the sighting with us, including where and when it was seen,” Rodda said. “If they could send us photos of the coyote, that would be helpful, too. Obviously, we can’t send an officer to the area in the hopes he or she sees the coyote.” TAS may remove a coyote

A poster in the community of Ricmond Gardens alerting the public to a roaming coyote, believed responsible for missing and dead cats.

Have you seen a coyote? Toronto Animal Services suggests residents call 311 to report a coyote in any of these circumstances: ■ limping or staggering or with paralyzed hind legs ■ acting confused attacking non-living objects If you walk in a park with coyote activity, take note of these safety tips: ■ c arr y a per sonal audible alarm to deter the coyote, and get help if needed ■ carry a bright flashlight ■ keep your pet leashed If you are approached by a coyote: ■ make yourself appear larger and shout and/or clap your hands ■ stay calm, hold your ground ■ never run if it is injured, sick or debilitated or a threat to community safety. TAS investigates to

determine if the coyote can recover without assistance or whether capture and transfer to a wildlife rehabilitation centre is required. However, TAS is required to return any captured and rehabilitated coyote to within one kilometre of the location where it was found under provisions of the Ontario Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, a fact not popular with some residents, Rodda acknowledged. She confirmed it is not uncommon for a coyote to be seen during daylight hours. “Coyotes are not strictly nocturnal, like skunks for instance,” she said. “Coyotes are out at all times of day. Certainly coming around areas that are highly populated is a little out of the ordinary. Urban coyotes have been so desensitized to humans and traffic that it’s not totally out of the ordinary for them.” TAS works with the Ministry of Natural Resources on coyote captures. “(Captures) don’t happen very often. Coyotes are not an easy animal to capture. They’re very smart. Getting them can be difficult,” Rodda said.

Etobicoke York Community – 2015 Mechanical Leaf Collection

Transportation Services has once again scheduled mechanical leaf collection service in the areas outlined on the attached map. Mechanical Leaf Collection will take place from: Monday, November 9th to Friday, December 4th, 2015

ETOBICOKE YORK DISTRICT - MECHANICAL LEAF COLLECTION - 2015

A total of 43,300 notices, with the program collection dates, will be delivered to all households in the program area. Only those residents who are scheduled to receive mechanical leaf pick-up will receive notification, two weeks prior to the scheduled pick-up dates of the first week of collection. (Those that do not receive a notice are not eligible for the program). A day or two before the first Monday of your collection week(s), please rake all leaves to the edge of the roadway, but not onto the travelled portion of the roadway. Do not place leaves in ditches or in any way as to obstruct water flow. Once crews have picked up the leaves, they will not return to the area and the residents must bag any remaining leaves. Only the leaves that have been placed by the edge of the roadway by 7:00 a.m. the first day of your scheduled collection week will be removed.

If the leaf collection program is suspended due to an early snow fall, we will not resume leaf collection and any remaining leaves will have to be bagged for pick-up during your regular waste collection day. The City suggests that, whenever possible, composting is still the best solution for managing your leaves. For information on composting, please visit: www.toronto.ca/compost. If you do not receive mechanical leaf collection, place your yard waste in reusable, rigid, open-top containers or kraft paper bags on your regular yard waste collection day for pick-up. ‘Please Slow Down’ lawn signs available to Toronto residents Toronto’s Transportation Services rolled out its new ‘Please Slow Down’ lawn signs this month as part of a $40,000 fall safety awareness campaign. Residents are invited to place these signs on their front lawns as a way of “immediate, but temporary, response to concerns of vehicles speeding on residential streets,” according to Transportation Services. The signs became available to residents the week of Oct. 19. The signs measure 61-by-51 centimetres, and are yellow and black. They consist of a metal wire frame inside of recyclable plastic material. “These signs are to be used as a communication tool to motorists in addressing residents’ concerns regarding speeding on their street,” Transportation Services said in a report, while noting that “not all drivers will necessarily heed these warnings.” Through the campaign, each of the city’s 44 councillors was expected to receive between 300 and 500 of the new signs, to be distributed free of charge to residents upon request. South Etobicoke residents might notice the similarity

Organizers expect more than 700 jack-o’-lanterns to line Mimico Square and Amos Waites Park. The parade gives residents an opportunity to showcase their talents in pumpkin carving and decorating. The fourth installment of the event takes place Sunday, Nov. 1 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in Mimico Square, Lake Shore Boulevard West at Mimico Avenue. Residents are asked to bring their pumpkins (with candles) and lighters. Pumpkins will be collected by the City of Toronto the following morning. Wesley Mimico United Church puts on a new face! The 90 year-old church at the corner of Mimico Ave and Station Road is in the midst of a significant transformation. Wesley Mimico United Church was built between 1922 and 1924 to serve the growing Methodist congregation in Mimico. Over the years the church housed the first gymnasium in the lakeshore area, and a number of other community service initiatives. Beginning next year construction will begin on the development of 24 owner-occupied, Life Lease, two and three-bedroom suites, designed for adults 55+ looking to downsize, while remaining independent. The development will also include a community centre and smaller chapel - providing a strong sense of neighbourhood for the Mimico community. Residents will be able to make full use of the lounge area, exercise room, private second floor terrace, gardens and meditation

area, without the hassle of home maintenance. Shops, services, restaurants, and parks on Lake Ontario are a short walk away. Public bus service is right at the doorstep – about 20 minutes to the subway – and the Queen streetcar is steps away. Life Lease units are a cross between renting and owning. Owners have equity in their unit and have the right to occupy it for the rest of their lives. However all maintenance covered by Wesley

Mimico Place. There is no HST or land transfer tax applied to Life Lease units - unlike a condo. If you are considering downsizing from a single-family home to a more manageable unit, Wesley Mimico Place may be an option. Suites are now on sale at a preconstruction 5% discount. For more details on Wesley Mimco Place visit the presentation centre at 2405 Lake shore Blvd. W. Suite 403 or the website www.wesleymimico.org.

Enhanced youth space opens at North Kipling Community Centre An enhanced youth space is opening at North Kipling Community Centre today, giving young people a place to create, connect, learn and inspire. The City of Toronto’s enhanced youth spaces focus on three areas: dedicated space for youth, consistent staff and programming tailored to youth interests. At North Kipling Community Centre’s youth space, programs will include such things as barbering, doit-yourself nail art, a dominoes club and urban arts, such as beatboxing, hip-hop dance and spoken word. Etobicoke North Councillor and Toronto Deputy Mayor Vincent Crisanti, city staff, the North Kipling Youth Council and members of the city’s Youth Space Advisory Committee will officially open the new space today from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. “Providing youth with rec-

reation programs and services close to their homes is an essential part of building healthy communities,” said Crisanti, in a news release. “It’s amazing for the local youth to have a space like this in their neighbourhood, and I encourage the young people of this community to take advantage of it.” The North Kipling enhanced youth space is the fourth out of a total seven set to open this year in Toronto. “Youth spaces are effec-

tive ways to engage young people in both recreation and their communities,” said York Centre Councillor James Pasternak, chair of the Community Development and Recreation Committee, in the release. “Local youth get a chance to inspire everything from the name of the youth space to the programming offered.” Youth are a high-priority service focus for the Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation division. The division offers registered and drop-in programming for youth at more than 130 locations and operates the Youth Outreach Worker Program. Youth outreach workers support youth who face barriers to participation by connecting them with recreation programs, social services and referral agencies that provide housing, employment, health and harm-reduction services.

Report faulty street lights to city With the daylight hours waning, the city is asking residents to report streetlight outages to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The city has some 160,000 streetlights in operation for which Toronto Hydro is responsible. The company has a service request form that can be filled out via www.torontohydro.com for malfunctioning lights. You can also call in your report to 416-542-8000. To report streetlight outages in a park, contact the city’s 311 helpline or call 416-392-CITY (2489). TTC to fix waiting areas at pearson Changes are coming to the TTC’s bus-waiting areas at Toronto’s Pearson airport. The non-descript waiting areas at Terminals 1 and 3 will receive renovations, including more fare vending machines, better signage and heated bus shelters, tweeted the TTC’s Ian Dickson last week. In early 2015, the TTC began branding its 192 Airport Rocket route, which provides a

w

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT dedicated bus service between Kipling station and Pearson airport. Last year, a TTC spokesperson admitted the airport terminal bus waiting areas could be made more obvious, especially for tourists. At the time, signs were limited and unclear, and information was still on display for discontinued bus routes. PLANNING Nov. 25 FUNDRAISER wTTCRIDERS

TTCriders, which has made headlines in 2015 for several transit advocacy campaigns and scathing criticism of Metrolinx’s Union Pearson Express service, will hold its second annual fundraiser. The group is offering discounted tickets to the Nov. 25 event at the Buddies in Bad Times Theatre with the purchase of a group membership. Former Toronto mayor

David Miller is scheduled to provide a keynote address and the evening will be emceed by Evalyn Parry, Toronto playwright and Buddies’ executive director. Musical entertainment will be provided by fiddler Shelley Coopersmith, a TTC busker. Visit www.ttc.riders.ca TRANSIT USERS SURVEYED by province wGO

GO Transit users have been contacted by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation over the last couple of weeks to complete an online survey seeking feedback on infrastructure planning for the Greater Toronto Area and beyond. Unlike past GO surveys marketed to the general public, only a limited number of respondents have been invited to participate, contacted randomly through email invitations.

It’s very rare for them to receive food that isn’t boxed or canned, but that’s where we come in.” During last year’s holiday drive, Stonegate CHC garnered enough donations to provide nearly 300 Good Food Boxes to individuals and families in the community struggling to put healthy food on the table. The health centre’s 2015 goal is to surpass 300 Good Food Boxes, helping to feed families and individuals dealing with hunger food insecurity – especially in the wake of last year’s closure of the Stonegate Plaza, which turned the community into a virtual

The Stonegate community is seeking the gift of good food once again this holiday season. Stonegate Community Health Centre (CHC), located in southeast Etobicoke, is looking for local businesses, community services and residents to support its annual Good Food Box Holiday Drive. Now in its sixth year, the aim of the drive is to help put healthy, nutritious food on the tables of the many residents in need in the Stonegate community – where 28 per cent of families and 38 per cent of children are living in poverty, according to Stonegate CHC. “What it means is that families receive a box full of fresh fruits and vegetables to put on their tables,” said Julia Graham, co-ordinator of Stonegate CHC’s Community Food Program. “For those who visit food

Woodbine backing Etobicoke General ER expansion Woodbine Entertainment Group, which operates Woodbine Racetrack, is helping to expand the emergency department at Etobicoke General Hospital. The racetrack operator has pledged to donate $100,000 toward the redevelopment of the hospital. William Osler Health System Foundation is in the midst of a $100-million campaign to expand and redevelop Etobicoke General Hospital. By 2019, the hospital is expected to have • a larger, state-of-the-art emergency department; • cardiac care and intensive care units; • a maternal newborn unit with birthing suites and a specialized nursery; • a new ambulatory procedures unit; • and cardiorespiratory and neurodiagnostic services. tribution will be designated towards building and equipping the expanded emergency department. The donation will also be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Orlando Corporation, which has launched a $15

million matching gift challenge. This challenge will match dollar-for-dollar all donations made to each of Osler’s three hospital sites. Over the years, Woodbine has contributed $400,000 to

Etobicoke General to help pay for such renewal and redevelopment of the hospital’s diagnostic cardiology and day surgery spaces. Woodbine has also supported the hospital through sponsorships and through the

use of the racetrack’s facilities for fundraising events in support of Osler. “We are extremely grateful to our many friends at Woodbine Entertainment Group, not only for this significant donation, but also for their long-lasting support of William Osler Health System and Etobicoke General Hospital,” said Ken Mayhew, president and CEO of William Osler Health System Foundation, in a news release. “Their generosity continues to have a significant

They are pioneering health care and treating patients as people first, while providing crucial services. “This approach is taking health care to the next level and we applaud their efforts.”

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer found in Canadian women, and understanding your personal risk factors can help to avoid becoming a part of this demographic. Getting screened for abnormalities is an easy first preventative step you can take. Here is a quick-guide to breast health:

Understand your personal risk Risk factors of breast cancer can include your gender, age, breast density and genetics. Women have a higher chance of getting breast cancer than men, as do women over the age of 60. Family history that includes ovarian and breast cancer in female relatives can also raise the risk, along with having a particular genetic disposition. Women with dense breasts have also been shown to have an increased risk. Understanding your personal risks and how your lifestyle impacts these risks can help you in the long run.

to two years starting at age 40.

Preventative measures Practicing self-screening can also help with early diagnosis. It is recommended that women take a moment each month to self-screen. Women should begin this exam in their early twenties and look for abnormalities such as lumps, bumps, redness, changes in nipple size and abnormal excretions. If anything abnormal is detected during the self exam, an appointment should be made with a doctor.

Chef Ted Reader cooks up a fundraiser with Thistletown Collegiate students Etobicoke’s Godfather of the Grill fired up his Hoptimus Prime barbecue and smoker last week for a fundraiser at Thistletown Collegiate Institute. Award-winning celebrity chef Ted Reader lent his time, his recipes and even his firetruck-turned-grill to help the Culinary Specialized High Skills Major Program at Thistletown raise money for a ‘culinary adventure’ to Italy in 2017. “I just think what the Thistletown high school chefs are doing from a fundraising perspective is amazing,” Reader said. “But what really impresses me is the fact that they’re growing their own produce, they’re learning how to be self-sufficient in the future, and they’re creating a foundation of learning how to cook, which is really important. And now they get to go on a culinary adventure. I didn’t get to do that when I went to high school, but it’s really cool, because the kids will get to experience the world of food globally.” In total, Reader helped feed more than 300 students and guests at the lunch-time fundraiser, using

more than 25 recipes from his latest cookbook, Gastro Grilling, that were handpicked by Thistletown culinary teacher Chef Keith Hoare and his team of students. “We made his slashed barbecue chicken legs coated with barbecue potato chips, his honey teriyaki wasabi chicken, his grilled Bartlett pears with ginger cranberry syrup, and we used his spice rub and did his mini sliders,” Hoare said, noting while his students did most of the prep work, Reader came in to supervise and ‘got right in there with the kids’ in the process. “It all turned out great, and it was inspiring for them (to work with Reader)...” The fundraiser was expected raise more than $1,000 toward Thistletown culinary students’ nine-day trip. Hoare said 20 of his Grade 11 students have signed up for the trip, which will see the students visit the Colosseum and take gladiator lessons in Rome, learn authentic pizza making skills in Naples and visit the sights and participate in culinary sessions in Capri, Sicily, Pompeii, and the Amalfi Coast. “I think the educational experience our students get from being immersed in a culture and sur-

rounded by its history is far more beneficial than reading it from a textbook,” Hoare said. “When we’ve gone in the past, the kids have drawn so much out of it – and not just in terms of food preparation, because we do a lot of cooking classes, but the cultural and history aspects, too.” Such an experience, however, comes at a cost, with an estimated price tag of $4,000 per student – which is where Hoare’s commitment to fundraising comes in. He and his participating students will fundraise $3,000 of each student’s trip costs with events like Thursday’s barbecue with Reader. Oma Peraud, 15, said she’s more than willing to put in a little work to make her ‘culinary adventure’ a dream come true. “I’m very grateful for it, because it’s a lot of money we have to fundraise, and plus it helps us to go and have this wonderful experience in Italy,” she said of the upcoming trip, her first to Europe. For his part, Reader said he’s proud to see such talented young culinary minds flourishing in his own backyard, and was happy to help them out with Thursday’s barbecue fundraiser.

THE ENTIRE FUNERAL PROCESSION HIT THE DRIVE-THRU. Because every morning, without fail, she would pick up a coffee. Celebrate a loved one’s life in a way that would reflect their tastes, their interests, their personality, the way they lived their life. Create a service that’s exactly how they would have wanted it.

Surveillance image released of robbery suspects Police have released surveillance images of two men wanted in connection with a pair of west-end robberies that turned violent. The first incident occurred in the parking lot of McDonald’s at 5453 Dundas St. W. in south Etobicoke on Thursday, July 30. Police were called to the scene at around 3 p.m. after a 31-year-old man was viciously attacked about the head and body with metal batons. The victim, police report, had previously placed an ad on Kijiji to sell his Nike Air Jordan shoes, and had arranged to meet two people at the restaurant to complete the transaction. The shoes were stolen following the attack. The first suspect is described as 18 years old, about 6’1” tall, with a skinny build, large lower lip, and distinct gap between his front upper teeth. He was wearing a white bucket cap with dark-blue

The second suspect is described as 18, about six feet tall, with a skinny build and short black curly hair. He was wearing a blue long-sleeved shirt buttoned up with white buttons, a white T-shirt with a multicoloured image (predominantly blue), light-grey Roots sweatpants with a Roots logo on the upper left thigh and white running shoes with

white soles. Police allege the same two suspects were also involved in a stabbing at the Petro Canada gas station at 3380 Dixie Rd. in Mississauga on Sunday, Oct. 11 at around 2:15 a.m. In that case, the victim was stabbed in the chest and received life-threatening injuries. Police said the two men

are to be considered armed and dangerous and urged anyone who sees them not to approach, but to call 911 immediately. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-2200 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

College suspends rugby teams Humber’s women’s team reinstated, but plug pulled on men’s team NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Humber College’s five-time provincial champion men’s rugby team will remain suspended for the rest of the season but the defending champion women’s rugby team – which has thoroughly dominated all league opponents this year – has resumed play. However, the women’s rugby team, which resumed action with a 67-0 win at Oakville’s Sheridan College on Oct. 18, is playing without individual players who remain suspended for varying lengths. The college originally announced the suspension of both the men’s and women’s rugby teams in a media release on Oct. 2. “As noted in the original (Oct. 2) release, the teams were initially suspended for alleged

violations of the Varsity Code of Expectations,” explained Andrew Leopold, Humber College’s communications director, in an email sent last Friday. “An investigation into the teams’ conduct resulted in the following: “Behaviour occurred within the women’s team that meets the institution’s definition of hazing. Players found to have had a role in the activity received suspensions ranging from one game to the entire season.” “Behaviour occurred within the men’s team that reflects a culture that is inconsistent with the institution’s

values and the Varsity Code of Expectations. The men’s team will remain suspended for the rest of the 2015-2016 season.” For the men’s team, who have won the last five Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) championships, and seven of the last eight, the suspension may have implications beyond the current season. “Since there are OCAA rules regarding suspended teams, future seasons are uncertain at this time. We will engage in conversation with the OCAA regarding the overall impact on the men’s program,” emailed Leopold. The women’s team will have no such uncertainty. “As the women are playing this year, they will play next season as well,” he said. The women’s team ended up forfeiting one game, which went on the books as a 20-0

loss to Conestoga on Oct. 6. Otherwise, they’ve steamrolled over their opponents, winning their other five games by a combined score of 403-7. The regular season ended last weekend with Humber securing first place in their division (and a bye through this weekend’s preliminary round playoffs) with a 66-0 win over Seneca. The Humber men, meanwhile, had won their first three games prior to their Oct. 2 suspension, outscoring their opponents a combined 143-17.

It’s the only time this season the team is slated to be in the Toronto area for on-ice sessions. Alumni dig through childhood treasures >>>from page 1 because Mr. Hulley made it such an exciting day. It was a whole day thing – we did the time capsule, we did a big balloon send-off and, of course, he had popcorn. He was famous for his popcorn machine,” Harris said as a Toronto District School Board (TDSB) backhoe operator dug up her class’ rusted time capsule, filled with waterlogged class photos, fashion collages, cassette tapes, journals and newspapers from that day on Oct. 26, 1982. “ M r. H u l l e y r e a l l y cared about his students. Education was a big thing for him, and I think all of us learned something from him growing up. Certainly, none of us ever forgot about him.” While the John English time capsule was supposed to be unearthed in 2000, it wasn’t until former students such as Harris and Cindy Persaud began chatting on Facebook about a hosting reunion that talk of digging up the relic was renewed. “At the time, I didn’t even know it was buried here,” said current John English Principal Craig Howe, who brought along a dozen of his Grade 8 students to witness the event and to interview their predecessors.

each containing the soggy remnants of each classes’ booklets of memories and memorabilia. Daniela Basta, who was 12 when the time capsule was buried, found her photo in a well-preserved Butterfly photo album compiled by the Grade 8B class of 1982: “That’s me!” she exclaimed, pointing to the blurred photo. “It was fantastic to get together here with old classmates today,” she later said of the experience. “My heart was singing, my eyes were open. It was wonderful to just be here and rekindle old times.” L i k e w i s e f o r Ja m e s McFayden, who was in Grade 6 in 1982. ‘good memories’

local history “Our students are currently studying the Mimico community and the changes it’s gone through over the years, so this is a chance for them to really connect with local history and geography. They’re curious, and they’re excited to see what’s in there and to ask questions about what it was like in 1982.” As the dig got underway using an old map, students like 13-year-old Shayn Adatia watched on with anticipation as a TDSB backhoe operator dug, and dug and dug – and kept on digging. “I started to lose hope because they were digging for quite a bit longer than I thought,” he said, while staring into the more than six-foot deep hole. “But we were lucky – we found it.” First discovered was what appeared to be the time

capsule’s mangled lid and an old tennis ball canister containing a sodden stack of photocopied pictures of

senior kindergarten students and their dreams for the year 2000. “I’m going to be a swim-

ming teacher,” read one student’s prediction. As the hole grew deeper, the rusted remains of the

galvanized steel garbage can used as the time capsule was dredged up and inside, a cornucopia of plastic bags,

“For me, these were the years that I cherished most as a kid,” he said of his time at John English. “High school wasn’t a fun time for me, but elementary school was awesome. I really loved being here, so this is bringing back a lot of those good memories for me.” Those fond remembrances of 1982 are due to continue into the spring, with a John English reunion tentatively scheduled for sometime in March. Harris, who’s helping to organize the event, said she is hoping the reunion will include a tour of the school, an exhibition of the 1982 artifacts dug up with the time capsule, an appearance by some former teachers and a tribute to Hulley. News that his former students remember Hulley so fondly came as a comfort on an otherwise sad day for his wife Carol and daughter, Susie White. “Education was his passion. He was gifted,” Carol said through tears at the time capsule event. “It was just easy for him. There wasn’t one day that went by that it wasn’t a joy for him to go to work, and I think that’s very rare.”
