In fact, the temple is further deepening its community conscience with the construction of a nearly $6 million facility to better serve the north Etobicoke community. The future 22,000-square-foot building at its existing 2152 Kipling Ave. address will include: a desperately needed, large, communityaccessible gymnasium, classroom, meeting rooms, as well as a moreprivate food bank, sanctuary and fellowship hall. The gymnasium will be offered to community groups free-of-charge, Major Kathryn Trim said in an interview last Friday. “We very much have a community vision for the building. It won’t just serve the congregation. We plan to serve the community. Our dream, our vision is to have teenagers use the gymnasium for structured programming. We won’t charge them for it.” Trim and her husband, Major Kester Trim, took over leadership of the Salvation Army Temple in Rexdale in July. The couple had spent five years in regional leadership of the Salvation Army in Quebec. Police hunt suspect in string of south Etobicoke break-ins Police have released a security camera image of a suspect wanted in connection with an alleged string of break-and-enters and sexual assaults in Etobicoke early Friday. The image shows a man wearing dark clothing and a white cloth or T-shirt covering his face and head. Artist discovers healing power in painting Diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy doesn’t keep Eda Avedissian from partaking in her passion CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke artist Eda Avedissian may have trouble getting outside to witness the beauty of nature these days, but that hasn’t stopped her from surrounding herself with the flowers she takes such joy in – she just paints them. Dozens upon dozens of vibrant, beautifully painted depictions of every imaginable bloom dot the walls of the airy Scarlett Road apartment Avedissian shares with her sister. In the hallway hangs the 77-year-old, self-taught artist’s nearly perfect replica of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers; in the living room, several vases of Avedissian’s intricately fashioned tissue paper flow-

ers fool even the keenest of eyes; and in the dining room, her gallery showcases vivid, bloom-filled scenescapes of the south of France from an art trip Avedissian took there years ago. “As long as I can paint, I’m living. I love life so, even in this situation,” said Avedissian, who began suffering nerve damage 24 years ago and has experienced mobility issues ever since. “Nearly every day I get up and thank God I can still put my feet on the floor and my paintbrush on paper... without my art, my life would be very difficult.” Avedissian, an Armenian who immigrated from Iran to Canada with her husband and three children in 1976, was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy in 1988 and has

since become dependent on walker and cane to get around – limiting her access to the world beyond her apart-

ment. Peripheral neuropathy – defined by the Canadian Neuropathy Association as

a problem with the functioning of the nerves outside the spinal cord – leads to symptoms including numbness, weakness, burning pain, and loss of reflexes. For Avedissian, the pain has become increasingly severe and disabling. “I remember the thing the doctor told me was to just pray that it will take a slow stage of that illness,” she recalled. “Years passed and it started to get more difficult to move and walk.” While she used to enjoy meandering outside to a nearby park to paint, Avedissian’s deteriorating condition has left her unable to venture out so often anymore. Still, art remains her therapeutic outlet.

“It makes me happy to just imagine tomorrow I will get up and, if the weather is nice, I will go out on balcony to paint,” she said, showing off her makeshift outdoor studio space on a roomy balcony overlooking a leafy, tree-lined Scarlett Road. “Art helps me cope. When I’m painting, I almost forget that I can’t do this and that. I more concentrate on the things that I can do. And I love to paint.” While Avedissian’s family and friends have benefitted from her many artful gifts, their talented resident artist has never properly exhibited her work in public – a dream she still holds dear. “I’ve never had the chance for people to see my work,” she said. “I always wanted that.”

Terry Fox Run helps sustain a legacy of hope T

here’s a lesson for volunteer organizations to observe when it comes to the Terry Fox Run. The event has grown enormously over its 32 years and is now a worldwide undertaking – one that even goes beyond the traditional Sunday run in multiple locales. For example, there’s now a separate National School Run Day. There’s also an intriguing new initiative making its debut this year. Canadian university students are being urged to get involved with Terry’s Cause on our view Campus. Among its goals is “to inspire future generations You can honour with Terry’s story of courage, selflessness and hope.” So far, the memory of a nine events are confirmed, including one in Toronto. Canadian hero Students at University of Toronto will participate in a run bringing students from all three of its campus locations (downtown Toronto, Mississauga, Scarborough) to its Scarborough campus. While most of the university events are taking place Sunday, Toronto’s is scheduled for Oct. 3. It’s a fitting expansion for a number of reasons. Terry Fox was a first-year student at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. when he was diagnosed with bone cancer, which resulted in his right leg being amputated above the knee. The connection of this event to a university campus is an obvious one. Just as importantly, by directly engaging university students – our leaders of tomorrow – Terry Fox Run organizers are making a shrewd, sustainable investment in ensuring the continuation of Fox’s legacy. It also signals renewal. Many organizations run the risk of becoming irrelevant once the generation that created those organizations passes on. It’s a sad, but undeniable reality; volunteer organizations need to consider a form of succession planning if they hope to be sustainable. And there’s reason to hope. Our young people do volunteer. In a Statistics Canada report released earlier this year, titled Caring Canadians, Involved Canadians, nearly 60 per cent of Ontarians between the ages of 15 and 24 volunteered at least once in the previous 12 months. It’s the highest volunteer rate of the six age groups cited in the survey, and well above the provincial rate of 47.7 per cent. Participating in the Terry Fox Run is an excellent way to honour the memory of a bonafide Canadian hero. It always has been. Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. To the editor: Re: ‘Ending violence against women focus of campaign,’ News, Aug. 24 Good things happen when people work together – and this group Neighbours, Friends and Families proves it. But shouldn’t this inclusive group include all innocent victims of violence, especially children and elders? Decades ago the women’s movement emphasized that injustice and neglect result from exclusion, with the term ‘male chauvinist’ – that excess loyalty to one group neglects and even negatively stereotypes peoples from other groups. A deceased friend used to bemoan the fact that while more common cancers had very successful fundraisers, her rare cancer was neglected and underfunded. She advocated that the cancer fundraising should be for all cancers. When we focus on the victims in one group over another, we are using the same chauvinistic thinking which created the injustice in the first place. Joseph Polito

Ford’s political career will survive court case

ob Ford was never going to get out of that courtroom unscathed, and by the time Clayton Ruby was finished with him on the stand last Wednesday, the Mayor of Toronto was pretty much on the ropes. At the end of it, our mayor emerged as a seemingly careless steward of the city, wilfully ignorant of the laws he had sworn to uphold, a passionate defender of the social benefits of high school football but disinterested in almost everything else. It’s not a surprise. If Ruby had been permitted to by Judge Charles Hackland, he might have been able to introduce a laundry list of stories with which we are all familiar regarding Ford’s behaviour. Ford’s lawyer Alan Lenczner successfully argued that questioning on those matters would do

more than embarrass the mayor. It might also have embarrassed a great many voters – because let’s face it: No one who voted for him could say they weren’t told exactly the kind of guy Ford was. Now, he is facing the very real prospect of losing the job to which he was elected. He is accused of contravening the Ontario Municipal Conflict of Interest Act when he spoke and voted on the floor of council in February on a matter in which he had a financial interest: a requirement by Toronto

Council that he repay $3,150 to 11 lobbyists who donated to his football charity while he was a city councillor. Unless Judge Hackland is persuaded by Lenczner’s suite of finely-honed legal arguments – council had no authority to order the repayment; the mayor made an error in judgement in good faith; Ford’s interpretation of the Conflict of Interest Act (which he admitted to never having read) is correct – he will have little choice but to remove the mayor from office. Of course, there will be another election for the mayor should that happen. If the sentence comes down without also imposing a restriction preventing him from running, it could be that Ford becomes a candidate in the byelection called to replace him. It could be that he would

prevail in such a byelection on the well-worn narrative of victimhood: Rob Ford, the candidate who was removed from elected office by a judge for the crime of helping schools in poor neighbourhoods have football teams. If the judge imposes restrictions, count on him running again in the first election he can. And give him good odds of winning that one. Because the time has come to face facts: when it comes to Rob Ford, there is a large constituency of voters that don’t want to face facts when it comes to their candidate. Park renamed after first African-Canadian MPP Wrap up of Etobicoke York Community Council Silverstone’s Melody Park will soon be renamed after the first African Canadian elected to a provincial legislature. Etobicoke North Councillor Vincent Crisanti moved – and garnered approval for – the renaming of the Finch Avenue West and Martin Grove Road area park to Len Braithwaite Park at Etobicoke York Community Council (EYCC) on Tuesday. Braithwaite – a Second World War veteran who was invested as a member of the Order of Canada in 1998 – began his political career in 1960 as a member of the Etobicoke Board of Education. In 1962, he was elected as an alderman on the Etobicoke council and then in 1963, he ran for the Etobicoke seat in the provincial election, defeating the Progressive Conservative candidate and becoming the first African

Canadian elected to the legislature. He was re-elected in 1967 and 1971. He passed away on March 28, 2012. n Road closure approved Judge Road – a north-south road in Etobicoke that runs parallel to Kipling Avenue, south of the Six Points interchange – is now to be closed south of Six Point Road. EYCC councillors voted in favour of city staff recommendations, which encouraged approval of the closure to allow Dimpflmeier Holdings Ltd. to acquire the property, which it is already currently utilizing for parking access and storage purposes in conjunction with its existing bakery on an adjoining property. Dimpflmeier will pay for the relocation of an existing hydro pole, and will allow

the city to retain use of the existing water main, sanitary and storm sewers situated beneath the property. n BIA board gets go-ahead The inaugural board of management of the newly formed Queensway Business Improvement Area (BIA) received unanimous support from EYCC. At its inaugural Annual General Meeting on Sept. 10, the Queensway BIA nominated Karen Baistrocchi, Michael Borromeo, Teo Kelebay, Michele Roberts, Franco Filice, Oleg Klipitch, Rachael Kelebay, David Crate and Lisa Borromeo to its Board of Management. EYCC officially appointed those nominees to The Queensway BIA board of management for the balance of the 2011-2014 council term on Sept. 11.

Four tunnel boring machines purchased RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com At its morning board meeting, Metrolinx announced it has awarded the first of two tunnelling contracts for work on the underground portion of the Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown light rail transit line. CEO Bruce McCuaig told the transit agency’s board of directors that Crosstown Transit Constructors, a consortium made up of four construction firms, won a contract to begin excavating 6.2 kilometres of tunnel from Black Creek Drive to Yonge Street beneath Eglinton Avenue West beginning in the middle of February.

He said the $320-million contract award represented a milestone in the completion of the transit line, which will run below ground in the west from Black Creek to Laird Drive and then travel east at street level to Scarborough’s Kennedy Station in a dedicated lane. “Starting to build the tunnel is a significant step forward in the delivery of this project,” said McCuaig. Metrolinx is still considering closing off northbound access of the Allen Expressway at Eglinton for construction staging related to the Crosstown, said McCuaig. He said discussions were continuing with the TTC, the city and community groups on the idea and how it could be best implemented

without severely disrupting traffic in the area and ensuring that construction proceeds efficiently. “What’s the best balance for this situation?” he said. “That’s what we’re discussing.” In all, four tunnel boring machines have been purchased for the Crosstown work. The companies making up the winning consortium are Obayashi Canada Ltd, Kenny Construction Company, Kenaidan Contracting Ltd and Technicore Underground Inc. A competitive procurement process is expected to begin by the end of the year for the second contract for the westerly portion of the tunnelling, said McCuaig.

All week long, the sixth annual Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF) will screen 60-second silent films on the platforms at all TTC subway stations via the Pattison OneStop screens, which also display next train information, news and advertising. In all, more than 70 films were chosen from 31 different countries for this year’s festival, which runs at the same time as the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). But unlike the heavy wattage glamour of TIFF, TUFF co-founder Michael Girgis promises no Hollywood celebrities or red carpets, just engaging short films that riders can watch in entirety while they wait for their train to arrive. “The usual arrival for a subway train is between three and five minutes,” said Girgis, president and CEO of the OneStop Media Group. “With that wait time, we felt compelled to program the network rather than just sell advertising.” Girgis, who founded the festival with Sharon Switzer, said TUFF gives younger filmmakers the chance to showcase their talents at a time when the city is hungry for film. “We just felt it made sense to do this fest when the city is celebrating film,” Girgis said. “Why not have people celebrate young filmmakers at a time when we’re celebrating blockbuster filmmakers?” The films will screen on more than 300 Pattison digital screens every 10 minutes each of the day of the festival, which runs until Sept. 17. In addition, designated screens, or film zones, at Dundas, St. Andrew and Bloor stations will show the films uninterrupted. Filmmaker Jake Chirico said TUFF is a rare opportunity for independent artists

to showcase work in a public setting such as the TTC. “It’s a great way to build arts into a public space and we need more of that,” said Chirico, co-credited along with Lemo Gariba for Magic Colouring Friend Zone: Let’s Draw screening Wednesday Sept. 12. Gerald Fantone said he got some of the idea for his submission Urban Zoo from traveling on the TTC and observing human behaviour. “I’m just excited so many people will have a chance to see my work,” said Fantone who, along with Chirico, was at the media launch for TUFF last week. TTC chair Karen Stintz also spoke at the press conference, which took place at Dundas station. “To be able to partner with an incredible film festival and showcase this incredible talent in our city speaks volumes to the dynamic creativity we have in Toronto,” Stintz said.

Last weekend, Carlson Wagonlit Travel hosted a charity pancake breakfast in the Montgomery Beer Garden at the Taste of the Kingsway festival. All money collected from the breakfast went to the Out of the Cold program in the Etobicoke area. Long time community member and philanthropist, Dr. John Elliot (left) flipped pancakes at the event along side other volunteers. As a doctor, his practice served the community for over 50 in South Etobicoke. Today at 91 years old, Dr. Elliot continues to give back to his community by regularly volunteering at the Out of the Cold program at All Saints Kingsway for the past 17 years. He donates his time preparing breakfast for the over-night guests. The community thanks him for his continuous support.

Plastic take-out containers considered for blue bins Toronto’s blue bins will be getting a little more crowded by the end of the year, as the city’s solid waste department gets ready to allow homeowners to toss out plastic clamshell containers.

The containers are most often used for food. Currently, residents can put out plastic bottles, jars, tubs, jugs and plastic lids. But until now, the city hasn’t been able to find a market

for the rigid plastics, nor has it had a means to sort them. But according to a report – that’s changed. Markets are developing for a variety of rigid plastics: takeout food containers, bakery item trays,

food storage containers, flower plots, glasses, cutlery, compact disk cases and other things. And the city has over the course of a year engaged in a one-year pilot project at its Dufferin Material

Recovery Facility in North York. The matter went to the public works and infrastructure committee, to as an information item, yesterday. When up and running, it’s estimated that the expanded program will divert 2,000 tonnes of solid waste annually from landfill.

Mimico Minor Lacrosse did its part to help Ontario to some gold medals at last month’s national box lacrosse championshps in Whitby. Mimico Mountaineers players were in the lineup for both the midget and peewee Ontario teams. Tanner Thomson, who attends St. Michael’s College, helped Team Ontario to the national midget title, including a 9-5 win over British Columbia in the championship game. Thomson contributed five goals and seven assists throughout the eight-game championship tourney. This month he also suited up for the provincial field lacrosse team in Oshawa for the Alumni Cup, which is Canada’s under-16 national field lacrosse championship. Both come with hill holder mode and an ECO gauge to help the driver be as fuel efficient as possible. The CVT adds $1,300 to the price of the XV. With the CVT in manual mode, steering wheel paddle shifters allow the driver to control the transmission via six pre-set ratios. The transmission also allows “second gear” starts in order to limit the likelihood of wheel spin on slippery surfaces. With the CVT, fuel consumption numbers are 8.2/6.0/7.2L/100 km city/highway/combined and 8.9/6.7/7.9L/100 for the manual. Another standard feature is the Vehicle Dynamics Control system that monitors and analyzes driver inputs. If the vehicle approaches the limits of stability, the AWD torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel adjust automatically to assist in keeping the vehicle on course. In normal conditions, torque split on the manual is 50:50 and on the CVT 60

Subaru is making an entry into the super competitive CUV segment with the 2013 XV Crosstrek that combines legendary engine and all-wheel-drive technology with a “fun” package.

As for the fun part, the Crosstrek will never be a STI or BRZ, but by keeping the revs up, the potential is definitely there. FIRST LOOK: Honda Accord 2013 The Accord is one of the three â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;pillarsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of the Honda lineup along with the Civic and CR-V. Combined, these three vehicles account for 80 per cent of all Honda sales in Canada.

The Honda Accord has been around for 37 years uninterrupted and is now entering its ninth generation with the launch of the 2013 model.

The interior of the 2013 is much improved with more soft touch materials and a more luxurious look all round.

Honda says the Accord has the roomiest cabin in the segment, although it is 90 mm shorter than the outgoing model.

The redesigned 2013 Accord is more sculpted than ever before, yet still has a somewhat conservative design in comparison with the softer lines of the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima.

n 411 ON THE ACCORD: Honda says the 2013 Accord has the roomiest cabin in the segment with more rear legroom than ever before, yet it is 90 mm shorter than the outgoing car. Cargo volume jumps to 447 litres, up 50 litres from the 2012 model. Honda says this is the most sculpted Accord ever and it lives up to several important design concepts â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it has good visibility, exhibits sophistication and refinement and offers good value for the money. For 2013, the LX model replaces last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s SE and it offers $3,500 of added value at a lower price. Trim levels for the 2013 Accord sedan include LX, EX-L, EX-L V6, Sport, Touring and Touring V6, while the Accord coupe comes in EX, EX-L Navi and EX-L V6 Navi. The Accord Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) sedan will be launched sometime next year as a 2014 model, followed by a two-motor hybrid based on the same power train architecture. Power for the base Accord comes from a brand new direct injection 2.4-litre inline i-VTEC engine that features an eight per cent bump in horsepower to 185, up from 177 in the 2012 model. Torque is also up considerably to 181 lb/ft from 161. Three transmissions are offered for 2013 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a continuously variable transmission (CVT) for the four-cylinder models, a six-speed automatic for the V6 engines and a six-speed manual

for the four-cylinder. With these new power trains, the Accord becomes the first vehicle to employ Hondaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new Earth Dreams technology â&#x20AC;&#x201C; dedicated to enhancing fuel efficiency and improving performance. V6 models with automatic transmission get variable cylinder management, which involves switching from six cylinders to three when demand for power is reduced, such as in highway cruising. Inside, the Accord has been upgraded considerably with much more soft touch materials, better seats and more overall interior space. Drivers and passengers alike will find a quieter cabin with much less wind and road noise evident. The ride and handling are improved as well, thanks in part to suspension changes. For example, MacPherson struts replace the previous Accordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s double wishbone setup in the front, reducing weight as well as noise, vibration and harshness within the cabin. The new Accord is seven per cent more aerodynamic than the outgoing model and that combined with the use of additional lighter weight high-strength steel helps with fuel economy and handling. >>>from page 1 as debate grew more and more heated over what Etobicoke Centre Councillor Gloria Lindsay Luby has repeatedly called a redevelopment proposal that’s “too big, too dense and too tall” for Humbertown Plaza. “I’ve heard Humbertown referred to as the heart of the community,” agreed Paul Fredenburg, a longtime resident of Lambeth Road. “I don’t think it’s appropriate to remove a relatively healthy heart and put in a cancerous growth.” While Fredenburg’s comment and dozens more just like it drew healthy doses of cheers and applause, representatives from First Capital Realty – the plaza’s owner – and Urban Strategies Inc. – the planning firm they hired to design the redevelopment – drew equal and opposite responses. Not even the announcement of a revised and downsized proposal for Humbertown was enough to quell the tide of dissent against the redevelopment, as the crowd repeat-

edly shouted down First Capital’s Jodi Shpigel and Urban Strategies’ Cyndi Rottenberg-Walker as they tried to explain their “complete community” vision for the site. While the original Humbertown application put forth by First Capital p ro p o s e d a m i x e d - u s e development at the 270 The Kingsway plaza with a twostorey commercial base covering the majority of the site, plus 28 three-storey townhouse units and five 11- to 21-storey residential towers, the newest incarnation of the plan announced at Tuesday’s meeting eliminated two of those towers while retaining the originally planned set of 654 residential units. Niels Christensen, president of the Humber Valley Village Residents Association, called out First Capital for falsely claiming to downsize the scale of the redevelopment. “First Capital will tell you that they’ve compromised on density, yet they have not reduced the square footage of site coverage...it still remains

at 650,000-square-feet of residential space and it still remains at 654 condominium units. All First Capital has done is shuffle things around and redistribute the total square footage,” he said, noting that the same can be said for their proposed building heights (the maximum of which remains at 21 storeys) and setbacks (which remain at 36 inches). “First Capital has refused to compromise on any of our residents’ main concerns – height, density, size and traffic foremost among them.” The marathon meeting, which was originally scheduled to conclude at 9 p.m., wrapped up at around 10:30 p.m., after dozens of local residents took to the microphone to lodge their complaints and concerns about the plan. When contacted Wednesday, Lindsay Luby’s office confirmed they are working towards scheduling a second community meeting sometime after Thanksgiving for those who were not granted admittance to Tuesday night’s meeting.
