Remembering the good ’ol days Rexdale Boomers reconnects high school alumni from the ’50, ’60s and ’70s

Rexdale was a really good place to grow up. We had great dances, good sports teams. It was like a small town. There was only so many places to go, like the Dairy Queen or the theatre.

In those days, there was all new subdivisions. It was your parents’ dream home or their first home.

Carol Martin revisits her 18-year-old self every year.

Not only does the 63-year-old Caledon resident fire up her backyard barbecue every June for a reunion of her fellow West Humber Collegiate classmates, she helps organize the now fourth annual Rexdale Boomers reunion.

“It’s all about having fun,” she said. “We share the same history.

People just want to get together.”

Rexdale Boomers is a reunion of high school alumni from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s from West Humber, Thistletown and North Albion collegiates, a Rexdale vocational high school, as well as people who lived or attended church in the area.

It takes place Saturday, Sept. 19 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Legion Branch 286 at 11 Irwin Rd. Attendees are asked to bring a potluck dish. Cost is $5 at the door.

Rexdale is considered the community of neighbourhoods north of Rexdale Boulevard to Albion Road and west to Martin Grove Road.

Martin said she holds fond memories of growing up in Rexdale, where she attended elementary through high school. She graduated in 1970.

“Rexdale was a really good place to grow up,” she recalled.

“We had great dances, good sports teams. It was like a small town. There was only so many places to go, like the Dairy Queen or the theatre. In those days, there was all new subdivisions. It was your parents’ dream home or their first home.”

Martin said she enjoyed high school.

“I had a great time in high school.

I dated a really great guy at TCI. Then, I married another great guy from TCI, who I met years later,” she said of her husband, Wayne.

Martin said she defends her childhood neighbourhood against those who think Rexdale is synonymous with guns and violence.

“A lot of people badmouth Rexdale,” she said.

“But all the people who went here had a great time. When people are

disenfranchised and a single parent can’t earn a living wage, who is home to look after the kids? I really fight the Rexdale stereotype.”

It all started with the Hanging Out at Kipling Heights Plaza Restaurant reunion page on Facebook. Thistletown and West Humber students ate regularly at the restaurant.

“People started to find each other,” she recalled.

“Something really started to happen. We’ve had a good amount of fun ever since.”

Reconnecting people, some after 40 years, has been the most fulfilling aspect of Boomers, Martin said.

“I’ve seen some really tearful reconnections. Some people thought they’d never see each other again,” she said.

“Sadly, some people have passed away. But I think there are only two or three people we can’t find.”

Martin said she has reconnected with about 50 people who once lived on her street, Jeffcoat Drive near Martin Grove Road and Rexdale Boulevard.

She also found five classmates who started school with her in Kindergarten.

“It really is all about the memories, shared history and the life and times of Rexdale high-ers. It’s a lot of fun.”

Mark 35 years of the Terry Fox Run by taking part locally W hen Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope in St. John’s, NL on April 12, 1980, there was little fanfare and not much attention to what he was trying to do to raise money for cancer research.

But as the 21-year-old Fox ran close to 42 kilometres a day despite having his leg amputated due to bone cancer, Fox’s persistence and dedication inspired more and more Canadians as the word got out about what he was doing.

Now 35 years later, it’s become our view much easier to spread the word through the Internet and various Lace up and social media channels about all upcoming local run events be a part of the happening across Toronto. the challenge Just search “Terry Fox Run” and the name of your community.

It won’t be difficult to find out where a local run is taking place near you.

The challenge today is to not just passively retweet or ‘like’ an event, but to be one of the millions of active participants around the world who take the next step to do their part to raise funds for a cause that is still relevant to this day.

While more than $650 million has been raised to date worldwide in Fox’s name, the search for a cancer cure continues.

For anyone who has yet to experience a community-bonding event like the Terry Fox Run, this 35th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope is a great way to get involved.

Or by the same technological means used to communicate with others about the run, it’s easier to make a personal donation, which can be done online at www.terryfox.org Fox didn’t intend his run to just have people cheer for him on the sidelines, but rather to join him in something greater than himself.

“It took cancer to realize that being self-centered is not the way to live. The answer is to try and help others,” said Fox during his marathon. “Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.”

Mayor John Tory shows civic prudence by backing off bid for 2024 summer Olympics

T

he roof of the burger joint at Nathan Phillips Square turns out to be a pretty good place to hold a press conference.

If the weather’s right, it affords a view of Toronto City Hall that is quite inspiring – the sort of sight that underscores bold visions of civic greatness.

On Tuesday morning, Mayor John Tory used the spot for a press conference for a rather different kind of announcement: one of sensible aspirations for civic prudence.

It was a good fit.

We are not, Tory told Toronto, going to make a play for the 2024 Summer Games.

Timelines are short, competition is stiff, and in any case, there are better things with which to occupy our time just now than jockeying for the right to foot the bill for a massive interna-

This was something of a shift from the signals Tory had been sending out in the early days of September – meeting privately with leaders in business and politics and sports, councillors and community representatives, speaking with nothing but optimism when cornered by cameras and reporters.

Tory’s reversal based on precedent was nothing short of seismic.

Earlier in the summer I based a rather inaccurate prediction on this matter on exactly that precedent: that when faced with an opportunity to lead with its jaw in a fight outside its weight class, Toronto’s political leadership cannot resist.

I am quite happy to see that my rather cynical assessment was incorrect.

Tory seems happy too, based on his answer to a reporter’s question: “I am really happy with the fact that I am now going to devote myself to traffic and transportation, affordable housing, to making sure that we can provide opportunity for people who are on the outside looking in, to getting on with other governments and getting them to make the investments that should be made,” he said.

“We do have real problems for the people who live here today.”

If it’s possible to put an even brighter face on Tuesday’s announcement, consider this: for the first time since the election, Tory and former mayor and Ward 2 Councillor Rob Ford have found themselves in agreement at least in the

broad strokes.

Doubtless this is not Ford’s doing: he clearly misread Tory’s earlier signals as badly as I did, and took a consistently contrarian view with a slightly less sunny argument: hosting the Games is too expensive and therefore we ought not try.

On this, Tory and the former mayor seem to differ. At some point, Tory said, Toronto might well bid for an Olympic Summer Games, or indeed something else. In the meantime, Toronto should get to work on its tangible future – and demand to be treated as something more than a good place to throw a party.

It is the sort of message that anyone should be proud to deliver with city hall in the backdrop.

Comedy night supports youth charity This year’s annual Comedy in Canada event raised more than $7,000 for Reach for the Rainbow (RFTR), an Etobicoke-based charity serving young Ontarians with developmental and physical disabilities.

Hosted at the Toronto home of Vicenzia Sera and Pierre Savoy, the intimate event was hosted by CBC’s Carole MacNeil and featured special appearances from Colin Mochrie of Whose Line is it Anyway fame, Second City alums Debra McGrath and Matt Baram and Mr. D’s Naomi Snieckus.

“We’re very thankful that these wonderful performers are donating their time and talent in support of Reach for the Rainbow,” RFTR Executive Director of Dawn MacDonald said in a statement.

Transit advocates in south Etobicoke want to see a GO Transit station built on the old Mr. Christie lands, the Humber Loop relocated, and a streetcar right-of-way realized RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The influx of new development, ever-worsening congestion and the new availability of development lands has community advocates and elected officials calling for progress on improving south Etobicoke’s transit options.

None of the GO Transit and TTC improvement plans currently under study are anywhere near becoming a reality. They all face significant challenges – funding, political opposition, site plan approvals – none of which will be easily resolved, admit advocates.

And with the influx of condominium development already in highly concentrated areas like Humber Bay Shores, and even more development on the horizon, Etobicoke-Lakeshore MPP Peter Milczyn admits congestion is only destined to get worse.

“There’s half a dozen new buildings coming on line in the next few years, and there will be thousands of additional residents with no real respite from congestion and any foreseeable improved transit service right now,” he told The Guardian last week.

The Liberal politician supports efforts to build a new GO train and bus station in south Etobicoke, potentially on the 11-hectare former Mr. Christie bakery site, located at 2150 Lake Shore Blvd. That site could one day be the location of significant new development if land owners Mondelez Canada succeeds in its efforts to have the site rezoned for residential properties.

It’s not likely any development of the Mondelez lands would begin for another decade.

Milczyn points to the nearby sprawling Mystic Pointe redevelopment which has been in the works for 25 years. In the meantime congestion is sure to worsen, he said.

“You need an additional GO station where you have the biggest concentration of population. In south Etobicoke that is Humber Bay Shores,” he said.

Milczyn said he has discussed with Metrolinx the prospects of building an additional stop for south Etobicoke to join the existing Mimico GO station which is undergoing renovations on the

But the immediate priority for the provincial transit planning agency is completing the expansion and electrification strategy for most of the GO rail network across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

That work is still several years away from completion, but after it’s completed it could be feasible to begin construction of a new station, Milczyn said.

Mike Olivier, the chair of the transit committee for the Etobicoke advocacy group Our Place Initiative, as well as a core member of the South Etobicoke Transit Action Committee (SETAC), also voiced support for an additional GO station.

streetcar Loop from its existing location near the Queensway south to Park Lawn Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard.

In a recent door-to-door canvass of south Etobicoke residents conducted by OPI, Olivier said many of those contacted expressed their reluctance for another major construction project in an area already

inundated with cranes and frontloaders.

“That being said, there’s also a lot of people who’ve told us the Humber Loop is a poor place to transfer, especially when the 501 streetcars short-turn, and at night when it’s really isolated and unsafe,” Olivier said.

In addition to relocating the Loop, OPI supports building a new streetcar line traveling in a dedicated right-of-way from St. Joseph’s Health Centre to Exhibition Place.

A new line separated from car traffic, despite taking years and tens of millions of dollars to fund, would benefit congestion as much as TTC service, Olivier said.

After years of consultations with TTC staff on the idea, Olivier said he was heartened by city council’s support of Grimes’ proposal Motion 11 – which was put forth in March -

to study relocating the Humber Loop along with a new right-of-way. Both schemes are also likely to be part of the city’s transportation master plan for the Park Lawn and Lake Shore area with public consultations getting underway this fall.

OPI has launched an online petition with the hopes of getting the endorsement of 500 residents for Motion 11 to present to the city.

Milczyn however isn’t convinced relocating the Humber Loop makes much sense.

“My own anecdotal view of it as someone who grew up in Mimico and relied on the streetcar for many years to go to university and work, I don’t think moving the Humber Loop in and of itself is going to make any impact,” he said.

A Terry Fox Foundation representative will show a replica of the artificial leg Fox wore during his Marathon of Hope from 10 to 11 a.m.

The Etobicoke run is one of the original runs to start in Canada. Globally, the Terry Fox Run has raised nearly $700 million for cancer research since Terry Fox ran his 143-day Marathon of Hope in 1980.

“Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me,” Fox said during his Canadian history-making marathon.

The Terry Fox Foundation is a leading investor in Canadian cancer research.

In 2014-15, the foundation will invest an estimated $26.5 million in three key areas of cancer research: discovery research ($15.2 million); translational research moving lab discoveries more quickly to impact patients ($10.2 million), and training future leaders in cancer research ($1.1 million).

The foundation reported 84 cents of every dollar donated goes to cancer research.

Fox dipped his artificial leg in the water in St. John’s Newfoundland on April 12, 1980. He then ran through the Atlantic Provinces, Quebec and Ontario averaging an incredible 42 kilometres, nearly a marathon a day.

Canadians watched in awe roadside and on television news broadcasts.

Then on Sept. 1, 1980 just outside Thunder Bay, Fox was felled with excruciating chest pains. Doctors confirmed the cancer had spread to his lungs.

Fox’s Marathon of Hope was over.

Fox lost his battle with cancer on June 28, 1981. He

Or at least that’s what street checks or “carding” is meant to do according to Lesley Oduro and other community members at a meeting in Etobicoke last Wednesday night, who instead suggested – with great support – that the procedure be improved to ensure safety.

A crowd of 40 residents ranging in age from 12 to 70, gathered at Rathburn Area Youth (RAY ) at the Burnhamthorpe Adult Learning Centre for a roundtable discussions about police interactions with members of the public regarding the controversial practice of street checks.

Etobicoke Centre MPP Yvan Baker hosted the event to hear first-hand accounts from his constituents. “ What impressed me tonight was the number of young people from the community who attended,” Baker said. “Notwithstanding how they feel, they came and spoke honestly and candidly about the challenges they face and had fantastic ideas about how government can help.”

While discussing the definition of street checks,

some residents found that by their nature, street checks are arbitrary and would defy a clear statement found in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms that “everyone has a right not to be arbitrarily detained or imprisoned.”

During the consultations, community activist and former mayoral candidate D!ONNE Renée strongly expressed this view, which was also agreeable with Naqvi’s views in a letter distributed to residents before the discussion.

“The idea of street checks or carding is a fundamental breach of the Charter,” Renée said. “We can’t make that synonymous with criminality because those two things are absolutely separate.”

But some residents, like Oduro, felt that though street checks were necessary in some cases, they should be performed more effectively.

“It’s a good thing,” Oduro said.

“There are people doing crime in the community running around with toys we don’t want them to have.

If we can finesse and perfect the carding system we can get those people off the streets and keep everyone safe.”

Lynne Wallace, consultation facilitator and volunteer with the provincial Liberal

riding association noted these consultations were necessary to address the community’s frustration and to hold the politicians accountable.

“They (community members) come because they want answers,” Wallace said. “I see what the numbers are, that there’s 1.2 million data records of people stopped by police and given how many people live in the City of Toronto it’s become an alarming amount.”

Wallace is referring to the data collected between 2008 and 2013 when Toronto police filled out 2.1 million contact cards involving 1.2 million individuals.

Some youth shared their experiences of being carded by police, in one case being accused of stealing a sour key candy. Many agreed that street checks had social and psychological repercussions. “ We l i v e i n To r o n t o Co m m u n i t y Ho u s i n g ,” Oduro said. “And based on location, the police will have predetermined ideas about the area,” “It’s intimidating, it makes our location look bad and the rest of the community is doesn’t associate with us.”

City report recommends 41 kilometres of new bike lanes, including along Bloor Bloor Street could be getting its first set of bike lanes in 2016.

In a city staff report to be debated at next week’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee (PWIC) meeting, a pilot project on Bloor, between Shaw Street and Avenue Road, is recommended as part of next year’s plan to install 41 kilometres of new bike lanes citywide. The recommendations must be approved by PWIC and then city council as a whole.

The TTC is looking at a $95-million shortfall for next year, and this week the transit commission’s budget committee recommended boosting the city subsidy or imposing a fare hike for 2016 to make up the difference.

Bidding for 2024 Olympics not the best decision for Toronto: Tory DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto will not be bidding for the 2024 Olympics, Mayor John Tory told reporters in front of city hall Tuesday.

Tory said that after having consulted with city councillors, business and community leaders, he’s determined the city can better spend its time dealing with core issues such as transportation, housing and poverty than it could chasing Olympic gold.

“In the end, it’s not my job to be rash,” Tory said.

“It’s my job to make the best decision for Toronto. And I’ve decided not to submit a letter to the International Olympic Committee and so we will not be a candidate for the 2024 Summer Games.”

Tory said he made the call late Monday, just a day before the Olympic Committee’s 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15 deadline for submitting a letter.

He said while Toronto is

well-positioned to host major sporting events as proven by the success of this summer’s Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, there was neither time nor support to mount a bid for the Olympics.

Election problems The federal election presented an additional problem, Tory said.

“It was a factor in the sense that you couldn’t look at one person who would for sure be in a government, or any combination of people who would be in a government, and know you were talking to somebody who could help,” he said. “I know in recent days I talked to people in the three national parties and they were supportive, they recognized the federal government had a role to play, but they were not writing a blank cheque.”

Toronto would also have been well behind other world cities vying for the Games.

And ultimately, Tory said council needs to pay heed to the priorities in governing and building the city.

“I am really happy with the fact that I am now going to devote myself to traffic and transportation, affordable housing, to making sure that we can provide opportunity for people who are on the outside looking in, to getting on with other governments and getting them to make the investments that should be made,” he said.

Tory said he would establish an advisory committee looking at ways Toronto could compete for the Olympics and other international events such as the World Cup of Soccer, the World Expo or other world championships.

In a report presented to Etobicoke York Community Council (EYCC) last Tuesday, Toronto Public Health officials informed west-end councillors that the results of a study undertaken last summer near 29 Judson St. showed that “the air quality in the vicinity of ML Ready Mix is acceptable and not appreciably different

from other parts of Toronto.”

That news came as a shock to some councillors, who have heard many times in the past from Judson Street residents about the “toxic” clouds of dust emanating from the concrete batching plant – dust they say coats their homes and cars, and forces them to remain indoors with

their windows shut much of the time.

“From what we have heard from residents, I’m very surprised at the results of this study,” Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette told Toronto Public Health officials during Tuesday’s meeting.

“Residents are telling us they are constantly wiping down their houses, they’re constantly having dust on their properties...so I have a hard time with this.”

Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes was likewise taken aback by the relatively positive report, and admitted he’d been hoping for a different result – one which may have forced ML Ready Mix to relocate.

“I was kind of hoping for a different outcome,” Grimes said, noting that the city will nonetheless maintain its “very heavy hand” in trying to move the plant out of the residential area on Judson.

“I wish they had come back and said, ‘nope, you gotta get these guys outta there’ but they didn’t... so we’re going to continue to put a full-court press on them to get these guys relocated.”

According to the Toronto Public Health report – which can be read in its entirety at www.bit.ly/1QoKmXU – the air quality assessment study consisted of air quality monitoring, meteorological data collection, and qualitative observation near ML Ready Mix over the course of three weeks last summer (July 10-15, July 20-23 and July 25-28, 2014).

Air quality monitoring was conducted for PM2.5 (a term to describe air particles that are 2.5 millionths of a meter in diameter or smaller) and PM10 (air particles that are 10

millionths of a meter in diameter or smaller) – both of which, the report states, are considered to be good indicators of emissions from such operations.

“Air particles of this size are a concern because they can reach deep into the lungs and are associated with adverse health outcomes,” the report reads.

That said, Toronto Public Health reports testing in the vicinity of ML Ready Mix showed that all air quality monitoring results were “below health-based guidelines” for both PM2.5 and PM10.

Officials also found that the monitoring results at 26 Judson St. were also consistent with the air quality measurements taken at the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change’s (MOECC) Kipling research station.

“In general, the air quality in the vicinity of ML Ready Mix is similar to that in other parts of the city and it appears to meet the relevant health-based guidelines,” the report concludes, noting that it is the opinion of Toronto Public Health that no further air quality testing is needed.

Still, councillors at EYCC’s meeting vowed to continue to fight to have the plant relocated.

“I don’t think this is going to be the end of it, because residents are living there and it’s the number of trucks, it’s the dust they’re kicking up, it’s the noise, it’s the rumbling, it’s everything put together,” Doucette said.

“I don’t believe this (report) is the end of it, and I don’t think it’s the solution, either. But I do appreciate it as a piece of a jigsaw puzzle, and now we have one more piece to it.”

Police were called to the store in The Queensway and Islington Avenue area at 10 a.m. after an employee discovered the item.

The uniformed officer on scene could not determine whether the item posed a threat, and called in a request for the service’s bomb squad, known as CBRNE, meaning Chemical, Biological, Radioactive, Nuclear, Explosive.

“The person who called

it in described it as a grenade,” explained Toronto police spokesperson Const.

Victor Kwong.

“When we got there, it sure looked like one. The officer couldn’t definitely say what it was, or whether it was dangerous or not.

So the bomb squad was called.”

Toronto EMS and Toronto fire hazmat, or hazardous materials teams, were also called to respond.

Police cleared the Goodwill store, and closed its entrance.

No injuries were reported.

The police bomb squad’s initial series of tests on the seeming grenade were inconclusive: “They couldn’t arrive at a conclusive answer whether or not it could go off,” Kwong said.

He could not confirm whether a bomb squad technician or the squad’s robot removed the potentially explosive device.

Bomb squad officers then removed the device and loaded it into the b o m b s q u a d’s s p e c i a l ized armored vehicle. The bomb squad truck received a police escort to transport the device to an open field where it could be safely detonated.

Kwong said police calls reporting potentially live munitions are not common.

But police treat all potential threats seriously, and respond accordingly.

“Anytime we don’t know whether something is a threat or not to public safety, we always take it that it could go off. We have to do that,” Kwong said.

All-way stops coming to two south Etobicoke intersections Mark Grimes, west-end councillors overrule staff on the issue

“There are a lot of community things going on down there on weekends,” said Grimes of the Marine Parade and Waterfront drives intersection.

“There’s people on bikes and rollerblades, there’s seniors walking, people trying to get across that road. For that reason – and I don’t do this very often – but I’m striking staff recommendations in this case.”

‘many complaints’ Grimes had similar reasoning when it came to overruling city staff on the matter of installing all-way stops at Long Branch Avenue and Park Boulevard – a problematic intersection he said residents

have filed “many, many complaints” about, especially pertaining to speeding cars.

Typically, the justification for installing an all-way stop control at any intersection in Toronto is based on a technical warrant based on collision history and traffic volume.

In both the Marine Parade Drive/Waterfront Drive and the Long Branch/Park Boulevard, Transportation Services noted in its report that “a staff assessment concludes that the criterion for installing an all-way stop at this location is not achieved.”

The estimated cost for each all-way stop control installation is $600 – funds that are included within Transportation Services’ 2015 operating budget.

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com A number of traffic calming measures will soon be enacted on Longfield Road – albeit, not the four speed humps residents have long requested.

Etobicoke York Community Council (EYCC) rejected the pleas of residents to have the humps installed at last week’s meeting, citing a recent traffic study and subsequent report from Transportation Services that states traffic volumes along Longfield do not meet the requirements for such measures.

Se v e r a l re s i d e n t s i n attendance at last Tuesday’s meeting, however, argued that Longfield Road should be given unique consideration, given its proximity to the “always bustling” Lloyd Manor Park and the fact that the roadway acts as a conduit to three local schools.

To illustrate the speeding issues along Longfield, resident Emilia De Sousa – who could not attend last Tuesday’s EYCC meeting, but had a neighbour read a letter she had written for the occasion – relayed to councillors an incident that occurred when she slowed down for a squirrel near Lloyd Manor Park earlier this month.

“The individual who was driving behind me decided I was driving too slow and sped around me, killing the squirrel in the process,” she recounted of the Sept. 2 incident.

“While some may say that this was just a squirrel, the individual who drove past me could not see what was cross-

ing in front of my vehicle – it could have been a cat, a dog or even a small child...

“If something is not done to slow down the throughtraffic along Longfield, who’s to say that what happened to the squirrel might not happen to a young child. Is that what needs to happen for change to take place?”

While the four speed humps were nonetheless denied, Etobicoke Centre Councillor Stephen Holyday secured the support of his fellow councillors for several other traffic calming measures to be enacted along Longfield Road, including: n the prioritized installation of a new painted centre line and edge lines along the length of Longfield Road to create “side friction”, effectively narrowing the road and slowing traffic; n the installation of enhanced pavement markings and pedestrian crossing marks, where feasible, at the intersections of Longfield Road and Kipling Avenue, Longfield Road and Warrender Avenue/Ashford Drive, Longfield Road and Lloyd Manor Road and at Lloyd Manor Road and Winterton Drive; n the enhancement, where possible, of existing road signs along Longfield Road to include “Radar Enforced” signage and the installation of flashing warning lights; n and prioritized tree planting along the Longfield Road boulevards as a traffic calming enhancement.

Holyday’s motion also instructed city staff to explore the possibility of installing timed turn prohibitions at the intersection of Kipling Avenue and Longfield Road/ The Kingsway in order to reduce cut-through traffic along Longfield Road; and requested that Transportation Services consider such measures as roadway narrowing, a new centre median, bumpouts and/or intersection adjustments, as part of any

future planned road reconstruction projects along Longfield Road.

In addition to all those measures, Holyday also asked the city petition Toronto police to conduct a speed, stop-sign, pedestrian and school bus safety enforcement project within the vicinity of Longfield Road, immediately following the completion of his requested sign and markings enhancements.

“This file is a complex one,” he said, noting that in addition to the one carried out in June, traffic studies have been undertaken in the Longfield area in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013 – all of which have come back with the same results, indicating that traffic calming measures are not warranted.

“I don’t have an axe to grind with this community. I want to do what is right, I want to do something that is fair... and the best I can do that is to treat this neutrally and fairly, and to do that I have to look to the city’s policies,” he said of his decision.

As a supplement to Holyday’s motion, York South-Weston Councillor Frances Nunziata moved a motion of her own, requesting that Transportation Services report back to the Oct. 6 meeting of EYCC as to the feasibility of reducing the speed limit along Longfield Road to 30 kilometres per hour from 40 km/h.

Both Holyday and Nunziata’s motions were carried unanimously.

Phoenix Montessori allowed to stay in new location CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com As Phoenix Montessori students entered their new building on Evans Avenue last Tuesday, councillors at the Etobicoke Civic Centre debated their school’s future.

Founded in 1999, Phoenix Montessori had, until recently, been a longtime tenant of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) at the former Kipling Grove School

until the TDSB sold the site to a townhouse developer last August, forcing school administrators to seek out a new building.

“Since that time, we’ve been searching for another location in which to run our school.

Unfortunately, the new employment zoning bylaw happened at about the same time and created some difficulties for us in finding a suitable location,” said Principal Lori Priolo, noting the new Employment Zones

no longer permit education uses on their sites. After exploring more than 18 new sites around Etobicoke, Priolo said she finally found an ideal location at 170 Evans Ave. “It’s in Etobicoke, where all of our families live, it’s isolated from neighbouring businesses, it has ample parking and it has a good amount of property that will afford us the opportunity to put in a fenced yard for the children,” she said.

The only problem was its location

in an Employment Zone – a hurdle Priolo thought she’d overcome by successfully applying in June to the Etobicoke York Panel of the Committee of Adjustment for minor variances to permit the proposed private school. Just eight days after being granted the variances, that Committee of Adjustment decision was appealed. The grounds for the appeal were that the Committee of Adjustment decision to allow Phoenix Montessori to operate out

of 170 Evans Ave. did not conform with the Official Plan’s Employment Area policies.

Last Tuesday’s debate at Etobicoke York Community Council was over a motion by Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes to drop that appeal and allow the school to continue to operate out of its new site.

Councillors ultimately supported his motion to drop the appeal and allow Phoenix Montessori to continue operating out of 170 Evans Ave.

FoodShare receives $112K in provincial funding to help expand its programs LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com FoodShare is the recipient of a $112,000 Ontario government grant which will enable the non-profit organization to expand its programs while examining the success of existing ones.

The organization is one of 41 agencies chosen out of 233 applicants to receive money for a Local Poverty Reduction Fund grant, deputy premier Deb Matthews, the minister responsible for the Liberal government’s Poverty Reduction Strategy, announced Tuesday, Sept. 15.

The Ontario government has committed to investing $50 million over six years to support and evaluate programs like those of FoodShare’s.

“It was a highly competitive process,” Matthews told her audience during a visit to FoodShare’s headquarters, near Bloor West and Dufferin streets, offering her congratulations to its staff and volunteers

At the core of the Poverty Reduction Strategy is the belief that everyone should be able to contribute to his or her community, however, poverty can create a barrier for some, Matthews said. ted to ending homelessness,” she said.

The government is determined to learn from the lessons provided by FoodShare and similar organizations.

Debbie Field, FoodShare’s executive director, pointed out that poverty remains a persistent problem in Ontario, which is why she welcomes the government’s effort to eradicate the issue.

“We think that if there’s subsidized housing, there should be subsidized food,” Field said as she held up a bag of apples that FoodShare sells at its markets for $5.10. One apple sells for 10 cents.

Field said she grew up in New York. Her mother was a widow. The family, which included her sister, lived below the poverty line.

“I participated in a subsidized lunch program,” Field recalled.

Her mother would tell her, ‘Don’t call us poor.’

She said the lunch program didn’t make the family any less poor, but took some of the pressure off her mother. She knew her kids were getting a hearty lunch so they were able to have something simple for dinner, like cheese sandwiches.
