Then city planners requested the developer modify the proposal related to gross floor area within the podium of the tallest building. "Staff are of the opinion the proposed modifications are not significant and recommend that city council support the revised submission," a December city planning report indicated.
TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke York Community Council unanimously endorsed city planners’ recommendation to approve a revised redevelopment proposal for 2169 to 2173 Lake Shore Blvd. W., which includes a half million-dollar parkland contribution. CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Toronto Public Health (TPH) is working alongside Humber College officials to ensure a "rigorous" disinfection is undertaken in the wake of an outbreak of norovirus that has infected nearly 220 students. Dr. Michael Finkelstein confirmed to The Etobicoke Guardian that lab results from specimens taken from two ill students at the college’s North Campus came back positive for the detection of norovirus this week. "That’s really strong evidence that it is norovirus, because that lab testing is consistent with that we saw from ill students sudden onset of vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, loss of appetite, dizziness. Those are all signs and symptoms associated with norovirus," said Finkelstein, TPH’s associate medical doctor of health. "Then there’s also the fact that the illness is lasting about one to two days, which, again, is very much in keeping with norovirus infection." While Finkelstein said upwards of 220 people most of them students living in Humber’s on-campus residence - have so far reported becoming sick, new reports of illness have drastically dried up since the height of the outbreak over the weekend. And that, he said, can be attributed in part to the "very rigorous" manner in which Humber officials have responded to the outbreak - both to boost their environmental cleaning and in encouraging vigi-

Sick students: reach out to public health

A flu-like illness has struck down more than 200 residence students at the campus since last Thursday. lant hand hygiene practices among members of the college community. "We are still getting some new reports, though, and that’s a reinforcement of the fact that good hand hygiene is the most important part of controlling this," he said. To those ends, Finkelstein said TPH will continue to work with Humber on recommendations for optimizing the cleaning of the campus. In a statement released earlier this week, Humber officials said 75 per cent of the students who fell ill stating last Thursday are now on the mend and that the college is now working to meticulously clean and disinfect the campus, with special focus on common areas and high touch sur-
faces/areas, including bathrooms and food establishments. Protocols are also in place to provide cleaning services for students in residence. Public health, meanwhile, sent its inspectors to campus this week to review food handling precautions with food vendors and hospitality students at Humber. "We wanted to make sure that was being done appropriately, so there aren’t any gaps in food handling," Finkelstein said, noting that TPH’s inspection did not find any significant violations during the visit to campus Monday. Despite that clean bill of health, Humber officials said they have sus-
pended all self-serve food, including salad bars, and have disposed of all unpackaged and unsealed food items from last week, as a precaution. While TPH was set to test specimens from up to 10 additional ill students on Tuesday to confirm the likely cause of the outbreak as norovirus, Finkelstein said public health officials would still like to speak with new ill students. "We want to make sure they all have the same signs and symptoms of norovirus, and that something else new hasn’t started to move in," he said. All ill students are requested to fill out an online public health survey at tph.to/gastrobusters.
Facts about Norovirus • What is norovirus infection? Also known as Norwalk virus, norovirus is a common cause of vomiting and diarrhea each winter and is often referred to as "stomach flu" (although it is not caused by the influenza virus). • What are the signs and symptoms of norovirus infection? Infected individuals usually experience sudden onset of nausea, vomiting and watery diarrhea that lasts about one to three days. Other symptoms may include fever and stomach cramps. • How does the norovirus spread? People can become infected with the virus in several ways, including: - direct contact with another person who is infected- touching surfaces or objects contaminated with the virus (i.e. door knobs, stair railings, etc.) and then touching your mouth or eyes- consuming food or beverages that are contaminated by an infected person- airborne transmission has been suggested to explain its rapid spread in settings like schools and daycares • How can I reduce my risk of norovirus infection?- wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 15 seconds after using the toilet and before preparing or eating food- if soap and water are not available, and if hands are not visibly soiled, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with 70 to 90 per cent alcohol- do not prepare food for others if you have symptoms of vomiting or diarrhea- thoroughly and frequently clean and disinfect environmental surfaces and equipment with a chlorine bleach disinfectant, especially in areas that are touched often anyone who is ill with diarrhea or vomiting should stay home until well for at least 48 hours) Source: Toronto Public Health

ABOUT US
Information, funding needed for rail safety Rail carriers are working under a shroud of secrecy, putting Ontarians at risk every day. Information regarding what hazardous materials are shipped through our communities remains elusive. At any given moment, emergency responders and local governments have no idea what, exactly, is being transported through municipalities across the province. Yet they are the ones tasked with keeping the populace safe in the event of a disaster. The continued secrecy is putting the public at unnecessary risk and it is not a theoretical risk. The danger is very real. In 2015, 144 rail-related accidents occurred involving dangerous goods in Canada. The five-year-average is 140. One need only look to the disaster at Lac-Megantic to see how very real and devastating such disasters can be. When the unattended freight train derailed, it left 47 people dead and half of the community’s downtown destroyed. That train had previously passed through the densely populated GTA. The disaster prompted renewed calls from municipalities and the province for increased transparency on the shipment of dangerous goods. There have since been improvements to informationsharing, but has it gone far enough? Emergency responders in municipalities have access to historic data of what has come through their community. From that they can undertake disaster planning. The burden - and cost - of preparing for these potential disasters falls squarely on the shoulders of municipalities. Not only must our towns and cities prepare without knowing when, how often and what materials companies are transporting, they must also find a way to pay for managing the dangers these private rail carriers pose. For security reasons, real-time information is not available. And what information is shared with select municipal officials is not intended to be shared with the public. No one wants to tip off a potential terrorist about the exact location of specific chemicals. And the rail carriers don’t want to panic the public. Not only are emergency responders faced with a lack of information, the public remains largely in the dark about what dangerous goods are rolling through their communities. This culture of secrecy does not allow residents to make informed decisions or adequately prepare for possible disaster scenarios. More information is needed. The public needs to have general data regarding what is regularly transported through their backyards. Municipalities need more up-to-date information about what dangers their first responders might have to battle. And those first responders need adequate funding to defend against the worst case scenarios. Rail lines are an important part of this country’s economy, but the dangers they pose need to be better managed. It shouldn’t take another Lac-Megantic to bring about these much-needed reforms.

Thorncliffe Park, a place of unsolvable problems What’s happening in Thorncliffe Park is what’s happening in Toronto’s other highrise neighbourhoods, only more so. Its problems can’t be solved, only patched. The elevators grind, fail, sit waiting for repair. Bugs crawl. Kitchen cabinets fall apart. Thorncliffe’s aging: 43 apartment buildings in a horseshoe of land on the Don River. They were built long ago, like St. James Town, Flemingdon Park, and Scarborough’s Markham Road highrises, when Toronto apartment towers rose at the rate condos are popping up today. Thorncliffe’s overcrowded: grandparents and cousins are shoehorned in. Families rent rooms in other people’s apartments. Designed for 12,000 residents, the neighbourhood has 30,000, possibly
MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto 45,000. Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, the area’s MPP, pronounced the overcrowding unsolvable, except through "community conversation," last week when Thorncliffe tenants and landlords met. "We don’t even know exactly how many people are in these communities," she said. So much of Toronto lives like this, and will continue because, while the gap be-

tween renters and home ownership widens, few apartment towers are built. Daryl Chong of the Greater Toronto Apartment Association told Thorncliffe tenants most of them are in Thorncliffe "because we haven’t built any new (apartment) buildings in 40 years." "If you had more choice, you would vote with your feet." Apartments pay three times the property taxes houses do, Chong and political representatives added, so people in the city’s poorest areas are subsidizing Rosedale. "One of the reasons it’s a long road (to changing that) is that homeowners vote," said Jon Burnside, Thorncliffe’s councillor. Landlords want property tax breaks, or big cuts in development charges before they build apartments.
Tenants who live in Thorncliffe, or anywhere there are roaches or the hot water cuts out when people are showering, can mostly look forward to more of the same. But they’re tired of landlords being awarded rent hikes above inflation while renters get no raises at work, work orders that see months go by without results, and a tenant board seemingly weighted toward landlords. If they’re lucky, they’ll get tougher city enforcement – thanks to a new landlord bylaw – and rebuilt elevators that beep angrily when overcrowded, until enough people step off. TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Residents of a central Etobicoke side street’s innovative, cost-effective traffic calming idea won councillors’ approval last week at Etobicoke York Community Council. Many long-standing homeowners on Prennan Avenue north of Goswell Road requested the installation of a "No Right Hand Turn" sign from Burnhamthorpe Road onto their short street during the morning rush Mondays to Fridays from 7 to 9 a.m. Councillors unanimously supported the suggestion. Resident Allen Nolan described a routine morning rush snarl of traffic as a cavalcade of cars back up on Prennan to bypass red lights at the busy Burn-
hamthorpe and Kipling Avenue intersection. "There is excess traffic, speeding vehicles and it becomes a safety issue," said Nolan, who like many residents has lived on the street for more than 20 years with no traffic issues until recent years. "There can be eight car lengths. If there’s a bus, it’s six car lengths," Nolan said. "The root cause of a lot of traffic problems is people approaching this intersection. People use it as a raceway. You see traffic backing up and down Prennan Avenue." A resident-circulated petition collected 48 signatures, with more than 90 per cent of affected Prennan residents in favour of speed humps or alternative options, Nolan said. But a city-conducted traffic study concluded ve-
hicle speeds and traffic volumes did not justify speed humps’ installation at a cost of $24,000. Nolan confirmed residents wanted the sign. "We want to request the sign ..." Nolan told councillors. "It will reduce traffic on Prennan during a critical time. And it’s a cost-effective solution." Councillors agreed. "No right turns, a lot of times people don’t follow it," area Coun. Justin Di Ciano said in an interview. "It’s certainly a lot cheaper and a lot easier for the city (than installing speed humps). Fingers crossed, the solution works." Once the sign is installed, drivers who ignore it face a penalty of two demerit points. Toronto City Council will consider the matter at its Jan. 31 meeting.
Youth Without Shelter gears up for annual fundraiser More than 400 local students and volunteers will take over Toronto’s underground next month for Tokens 4 Change - a 12-hour event aimed at bringing awareness to youth homelessness in the city. Now in it’s 7th year, the popular annual event will see young buskers descend upon more than 20 TTC subway stations, PATH locations and offices around Toronto on Friday, Feb. 3 to collect donations for Etobicoke’s Youth Without Shelter (YWS). In exchange, donors will be treated to performances of spoken word poetry, theatre, dance, visual art, and music. All proceeds will go to support transportation costs at YWS, as well as to assist its many essential empowering programs. As the presenting sponsor of this year’s Tokens 4 Change event, Tangerine

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners
like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Franklin Carmichael’s widow was a patient of Dr. Agnes Ann Curtin DENISE HARRIS denise.harris@sympatico.ca Hidden away in Thistletown at 34 Riverside Dr. is one of Etobicoke’s best kept secrets: the Franklin Carmichael Art Centre. It was a gift to Etobicoke by Dr. Agnes Ann Curtin, a remarkable physician, women’s rights advocate, and artist. Born in Carleton county in 1889, Curtin began her career as a teacher, then switched to nursing, and finally entered medical school at the University of Toronto where she graduated in 1920. Her private practice in Bloor West Village focused on the physical and
psychological health of women, but she was also a child development expert and youth counsellor. Her success as a doctor came from her treatment of the whole person and her strong listening skills. She was much in demand as a speaker, and made presentations around the world, primarily to women’s groups. In 1932, Curtin bought 2.5 acres (1 ha) of land in Thistletown, high above the West Humber River valley. Here she built a large, twostorey, log home she called "The Hills." In 1933 she formed a club for local boys who helped her plant an estimated 4000 trees which give the area its woodsy appearance today. She paid the boys with her own freshly-made peanut brittle. Curtin was also an accomplished artist, and it was her dream to turn her house into a centre for the arts in northern Etobicoke. One of Curtin’s patients was

the condition that it continue as an art centre after her death. In 1971, Curtin built the "Garden Gallery" behind her house, at the top of the hill. Art shows have been held there regularly ever since. In 1974, she was in-
ducted into the Etobicoke Hall of Fame, and her photo is still on display in the Etobicoke Civic Centre. When Curtin passed away in 1977 at the age of 88, her ashes were buried beneath a stone, under her favourite walnut tree, just east of the entrance walkway. A plaque donated by the Borough of Etobicoke reads, "She was our benefactor, our counsellor and friend." Today the Franklin Carmichael Art Group is a registered charity and the property is listed on City of Toronto’s Heritage Register. Membership continues to grow and the number of classes has expanded from a single class to as many as fifteen per week, for both children and adults - all thanks to Dr. Curtin’s generous gift.

3 quick storage area upgrades to get organized Skating season is well underway, but the gear is buried somewhere in the garage. And while the forecast continues to call for freezing temperatures, the extra winter layers are still hidden in one of the bins in the closet. It’s time to take control and get organized with help from design expert Kimberley Seldon. Working with the Electrical Safety Authority, she offers these tips for creating smart, functional and well-lit storage in the basement. 1. In the zone. Map out storage zones to ensure items are where you would expect them to be. From winter wear to camping gear and books to toys, built-ins and storage benches work well to eliminate visual clutter without taking up too much
floor space. Consider adding shelves at different heights for varied accessibility and use nooks and crannies — think about the space under the stairs or building storage units between rooms. 2. Lighten up. Good lighting is often forgotten when storage spaces are planned. But seeing is believing! A licensed electrical contractor can provide ideas on automated options for closet lights and suggest the best lightbulbs to use. Motion sensors are another popular choice. Just remember that it’s important to know the rules around the safe distance between ceiling lights and storage items to prevent anything from catching fire. For example, pot lights must be 150 millimetres away from any stored items or
cabinets; while other ceiling lights must be 300 millimetres away. 3. Hidden electrical. Give devices, laptops and gadgets a designated space by adding charging stations and strategically located outlets. And while we would all like to tuck away the electrical panel, keep in mind that it can’t be located in a closet or bathroom and that the working space in front of it can’t be obstructed. A Licensed Electrical Contractor and interior designer will help to design an organized and safe space for your family. Visit www.poweryourreno.ca for more storage solutions for your home.

In 2016, they donated $4.00 for every hearing test they performed in order to provide hearing aids for those who could not afford them. They surpassed their goal to help the Campaign raise over $250,000 and this year pledge to raise $300,000 by the end of 2017.

And Sciatic Pain Now hankfully, new natural treatment methods help many find the relief they had been searching for. Sciatica is a painful condition that affects the sciatic nerve. The pain usually radiates into one or both buttocks, descends the back of the leg and can sometime be felt in the foot. It is often a severe, knife-like pain, but can also be noticed as numbness or tingling in the leg and foot. It is unpredictable and does not go away even when you change positions or lay down.

Sciatica can result from years of poor posture, muscle strain, pregnancy, excess weight, wearing high heels, or sleeping on a very soft mattress. Sciatica is often a symptom of a slipped disc, pinched nerve or arthritis.

2017 READERS’ CHOICE NOMINEES nominee's spotlight Your time and money are precious; How using a travel consultant saves you both These days, you can purchase or book just about anything online. But your travel arrangements are a big investment, both in money and in precious vacation time. In a recent study of over 14,000 households, more people are booking their vacations with travel consultants than in recent memory. The study’s respondents, particularly millennials, said that they like to rely on the advice of experts, rather than selecting random destinations online. In the words of the study’s conductor, “At this point, consumers have tried it all – they’ve booked online, they’ve gone direct, and they’ve used a travel agent… in short, if you want a better travel experience, use an agent.” More reasons to book your next vacation with a travel consultant: • Travel consultants have the expertise to help you plan the best vacation possible. They are avid travelers, who take joy in providing one-on-one service and unbiased information. • You’re dealing with the same consultant, every time. You’re not dialing a call centre or clicking on a web link. Rather than dealing with a faceless corporation, they’re real people, who get to know you and your travelling preferences. • Your travel consultant handles every aspect of your trip, so it’s one-stop shopping. They’ll arrange your flights, ground transportation, accommodations, activities, tours and special
requests. This will save you quite a bit of time. • TICO-Certified professional travel consultants will shop around on your behalf, ensuring that you find the best value for your vacation dollar. Because of travel industry relationships, they can often find lower prices than you can online. Total Advantage Travel is honoured to be nominated as The Etobicoke Guardian’s Readers’ Choice for Best Travel Agency! With over two decades of professional knowledge and experience, Total Advantage has been Toronto’s premier choice when planning perfect vacations. Total Advantage Travel offers travel services that are just as unique as you, are and they do it at your convenience, either in person, over the phone, through email or even text messages. • Total Advantage works for you – even after you’ve booked your trip. In case of an unfortunate mishap, they’re here to help you resolve the issue. They can even act on your behalf to see that restitution is made.• You’re supporting an independent, local business. • Best of all: Total Advantage’s Travel Consultants don’t charge special fees for vacation services – they get paid commission by the airlines, cruise lines and resorts when they book your travel! As a full-service Travel Agency, Total Advantage can help you plan and book literally any kind of travel. Some of our specialties include:
• Luxury Travel - including custom-built itineraries, concierge-level support and preferred rates. This includes 5-star luxury accommodations worldwide, high-end rail tours, First Class transportation and luxury cruises on Viking River Cruises, Avalon Waterways, Paul Gauguin Cruises, Silversea and countless other options. • Destination Weddings & Honeymoons – Total Advantage has a team of dedicated Specialists, who are experts in all things Romance. Whether you’re looking for Destination Weddings, Honeymoons, Engagement Trips, Vow Renewals, Bachelor/Bachelorette Parties or just an intimate, romantic getaway, our Romance Specialists are at your service. • Guided Tours - the easiest way to explore and experience a region is to take a guided tour. Travel in style, in a luxury coach to destinations and attractions where your entrance ticket has already been provided to you, so you can skip the lines. When you get to the hotel, you’re already checked in! Whatever part of the world you’ve always dreamed of seeing, Total Advantage’s Tour Consultants will help you select the right tour for your personality. • Exotic Locations – Total Advantage has specialists for those “Bucket List” destinations, where you really need the guidance of an expert to plan the perfect getaway. nominee's spotlight Defend yourself against cold and flu season With snow flakes, cosy get-togethers and all the fun winter brings, comes cold season, with runny noses, coughs and sneezing that can knock you off your feet. While there is no cure, staying active and eating right can boost your immune system and help you feel better faster so you don’t spend your days in sniffling in bed with a cold. According to Ron Weese, a Seneca College professor and coordinator of the school’s Health and Fitness Promotion program, his students typically unanimously agree that food choices impact health and well-being, but very few admit to having a healthy eating plan of their own, nor following Canada Food Guide. “When we do surveys, 91 per cent of the people surveyed do not follow the food guide,” he said. “So it’s a real interesting problem that everyone knows that they should be doing something and no one wants to be sick… and everybody wants to perform better, but it doesn’t seem that people on a day-to-day basis look at their nutrition in those terms.” To help coach people into better eating habits, and look at the super foods and supplements that will keep them going not only through cold season, but through the whole year, all Healthy Planet locations have on-site nutritionists to offer personalized suggestions to customers based
on their goals—whether it be general health and well being, or high-performance athletic requirements. The first step, however, is a commitment to embracing nutrition. “This is not just for the athletes or a person who knows how healthy he or she should be,” said Syed Rizvi, Director of Marketing for Healthy Planet Canada. “It’s for everyone. Nowadays, if you’re going to eat healthy or you’re going to be really fit, it’s all about the essential nutrients… in the food source you are having, or in any supplement. Your body requires all these vitamins, minerals and proteins, so you’ve got to pick the right ones.” Healthy Planet has 15 locations across the GTA including a location at 1000 Islington Avenue Unit 3 in Etobicoke. For more information visit the website at www. healthyplanetcanada.com or call 416-259-5197.

For the past 20 years, dentistry and the welfare of society have been Dr. Chopra’s passions. Aside from offering optimal dental care to the community, Dr. Chopra makes it her priority to give back to others. Every year, Dr. Chopra searches for residents within the area who don’t have dental coverage and asks them to send her their story. TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Canadian wrestler Erica Wiebe became the Olympic champion in women’s 75-kilogram freestyle wrestling at Rio 2016. Now, the Ottawa native is helping to inspire some female Etobicoke high school wrestlers. This week, Wiebe, 27, surprised the West Humber Collegiate Vikings girls’ wrestling team with full kits of equipment, courtesy of the Playtex Sport Play On Canada Grant Program. "It’s pretty cool. I didn’t expect anything to come of it," Grade 11 student Brea Rodgers, 15, a girls’ 61 kg wrestler, said of applying for the grant after seeing a suggested post on her Facebook newsfeed. "It was a surprise to all of us. Then I heard this voice, and it was Erica." The Playtex Sport Play
On Grant Program awarded $50,000 in grants to level the funding playing field for 13 high school girls’ sports teams across Canada, including wrestling, swimming, soccer, basketball, weightlifting, rugby, field hockey, curling and volleyball. "When you see someone with all the gear and the boots," it’s super intimidating," Rodgers said of welloutfitted Vikings’ competitors, noting some Vikings didn’t have wrestling boots. Today, the Vikings’ girls wrestling team is 15-strong, a far cry from its sole wrestler three years ago. "It’s such an amazing sport," the teen said. "It’s all about building confidence and being comfortable in your own skin. Hopefully after the other girls and I graduate, the team continues." Wiebe gave the Vikings’ girls hugs and high fives,

"I encourage girls to be fierce, to never question who they are or what they do in life," said Wiebe, who just returned from India where she is the captain of the Mumbai Maranthi in the Indian Pro Wrestling League.
"I tell them to be true to themselves and to be really aware of the people around them, to raise up their
friends and women around them." Wiebe secured one of Canada’s four gold medals at the 2016 Summer Olympics, joining swimmer Penny Oleksiak, gymnast Rosie MacLennan, and Derek Drouin in men’s high jump. "I felt like a champion when I woke up that morning because I’d prepared for 3,000 days before on my Olympic journey. I was ready for whatever would happen," she said. "Then to have your hand raised and to sing O Canada, that feeling I’ll cherish forever." Bernard Sanchez has coached the boys’ and girls’ wrestling team to success for the past six years. The boys’ wrestling team won three back-to-back region-
al championships. In 2014, they came in third overall at OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations). Now, the boys’ and girls’ Vikings wrestling teams are both poised to become regional champions, he said. "We’re a school in Rexdale in an underserved area. There aren’t many schools with this sport anymore, especially in this area," Sanchez said. "This school has become a wrestling school." Wiebe’s visit will further motivate his wrestlers, he added. "Wrestling builds selfconfidence, and a healthy lifestyle. It shows if you work hard, you can achieve success."

Swimmer Sydney Munro named athlete of the month Grade 10 Richview Collegiate student inspired by Penny Oleksiak Sydney Munro is a 15-year-old born-and-raised Etobicoke resident. Sydney attended Humber Valley Middle School where her two younger sisters, Hailey and Abigail, currently attend. Both are following in their big sister’s athletic footsteps and are both competitive dancers. Currently, Sydney is attending Richview Collegiate in Grade 10. The Etobicoke Guardian featured Sydney’s junior basketball team in the fall, when they qualified and later won the Junior City Basketball Championships. As a multi-sport athlete, Sydney also participated on the junior varsity volleyball and swim team. Richview’s swim team qualified and participated in OF-
SAA swim meet in 2016. At the age of 10, she enrolled in the Parks and Recreation "Splash" program that introduces the participant to competitive swimming. Sydney, a self-professed "race junkie", craved the rush of competing. To feed this craving, Sydney joined Lakeshore Swim Club, which swims out of Gus Ryder Pool. This swim club was founded by Gus Ryder (ESHOF 1994) in 1930 and was where six past inductees of Etobicoke Sports Hall of Hall trained, including Cliff Lumsdon (1994), Kim Lumsdon (2006) and Marilyn Bell (2003). Lakeshore is a smaller club with approximately 100 swimmers, some who are ranked provincially and nationally. Sydney’s stroke of choice is freestyle (front crawl) and back stroke. Sydney is currently on a nationally-ranked relay team with three close friends. When presented with her award, Syd-
Fashion Shows brought to you by Michael Hill
ney was very honoured and humbled. When asked what Penny Oleksiak’s Olympic performance has done for her, Sydney stated that: "Penny O has transformed the sport of swimming in Canada and around the world. She has allowed swimmers like me to realize that I can reach my fullest potential with hard work, dedication and a little bit of dreaming." She’s an all-round athlete and has great potential along with a wonderful personality says Joanne Noble, Chair of the Board of the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame. The Athlete of the Month is sponsored by The Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame, Humber College, Canadian Tire - The Queensway, Boston Pizza - The Queensway and The Etobicoke Guardian.
