TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com It’s a now-iconic image planet Earth as seen through the window of a space shuttle. Dr. Roberta Bondar, Canada’s first female astronaut, recalled that moment and its inspiration to become a custodian of Earth’s environment on the 25th anniversary of her eight-day space shuttle Discovery mission. "There’s nothing better in space than looking out the window. It is how you connect visually with something beyond," said the world’s first astronaut-neurologist. "You can actually see that it’s a planet. Then you start thinking about how powerful a tool that is if people take the time to look and see." The Rotary Club of Toronto West honoured Bondar on Friday, Jan 27 with a lifetime achievement awards at its 18th annual Youth Impact Awards Gala at the Old Mill. Bondar was among six awards recipients, including: youth Aaron Brown and Stephanie Wang, Michael Prosserman, Longo’s and FEAT (Fostering, Empowering, Advocating, Together) for Children of Incarcerated Parents. Bondar connected her experience in space with her desire to explore Earth through her professional nature and landscape photography. "I always believed that a flag in the ground being the first Canadian female astronaut would not be satisfying enough," Bondar said. "I wanted to combine this art and science that had always been separated in a meaningful way." In 1998, Bondar mortgaged her home, and shot Ansel Adams’ inspired photographs of Canada’s national parks for two-and-a-half

Within the Landscape Art Respecting Life is a crossCanada travelling photography exhibition she donated to the Roberta Bondar Foundation. Rotarians donated $10,000 to Bondar’s foundation, a not-for-profit charity to improve knowledge of the environment among children, youth - and adults. "My pet peeve is this - we must never, ever say that the environment is for kids and kids alone," Bondar said in her acceptance speech. "What happens when kids become adolescents? They’ll say, ’That’s kids’ stuff.’ What happens when they become adults? ’Well, that’s kids’ stuff.’ "No. It’s our stuff. It’s our stuff all our lives. With this foundation, we’re trying to connect all generations to nature, to the natural world. We

look at the ways trees grow, and how trees recycle oxygen and water. These are things we need to live on this planet." Rotarians also made Bondar their latest Paul Harris Fellow, named after the Rotary founder, for her significant financial contributions to Rotary’s humanitarian and educational programs. For more than a decade at NASA, Bondar led an international space medicine research team, which continued to find new connections between astronauts recovering from floating in space and neurological illnesses on Earth, such as stroke and Parkinson’s disease. Techniques developed by Bondar’s research team have been used in clinical studies at BI Deaconess Medical Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, and at the University of New Mexico.

Brown, 17, is co-chair of We Can Change the World Day, Richmond Hill, a community initiative that engages youth in volunteerism, leadership and social action through year-round activities. "Aaron has proven himself to be committed, capable, responsible and dynamic," said the nominator of the youth under-18 award winner, who intends to study international development at university. "He’s confident, enthusiastic and has a can-do attitude." Wang, the under-25 award recipient, speaks three languages and will soon graduate from kinesiology at the University of Toronto. She founded Best Buddies, a program to integrate students with special needs, and Health Out Loud, a youth-focused health policy, commu-

nity action nonprofit organization, implemented at U of T, York University, Ryerson University and the YMCA of Greater Toronto. "She has a refreshingly inquisitive nature," her kinesiology professor said. "Her ambition and leadership qualities are second-to-none, making her a changemaker in youth health policy." Prosserman, 30, founded the charity Unity, which empowers youth to be role models and leaders in their communities through afterschool programs in break dancing, graffiti art, spoken word poetry and beat boxing. Rotarians awarded Longo’s, a family-owned grocery chain founded in 1956 by brothers Tommy, Joe and Gus Longo, with its business award. The Longo’s Family Charitable Foundation invests in emerging health research,

development and leadership programs, and provides support and opportunities to strengthen families and to empower children and youth. Last year, the Longo’s foundation donated more than $2 million to local charities, organizations and sponsored events. Children and youth mental health is its most-recent focus. Rotarians lauded FEAT for Children of Incarcerated Parents for helping to change the stigma and support children and youth of incarcerated parents with after-school programs in arts, sports and cooking that foster self-esteem, trust and security. "We tell them their parents’ actions don’t have to define them," FEAT co-founder Jessica Reid said. "Now I feel better, knowing I’m not the only one," a little girl said in a FEAT video.

ABOUT US

Provincial politics-as-usual scupper a good toll policy Cowardice. That’s the only word to describe Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne’s about-face last week, scuttling Toronto Council’s plan to charge a toll to drive the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway. The road tolling plan hatched by Mayor John Tory and supported by Toronto Council might not have been a perfect solution to Toronto’s financial woes - even at $300 million a year once fully in place, it wouldn’t pay for the long-term infrastructure needs of the city - but it was a giant step. Dare we say it, approving tolls was a rare courageous move on the part of a city council that has been perennially averse to approving adequate taxation levels. For some time, it seemed as though the Wynne Liberal government was on-side with the city, and prepared to grant the necessary approval, one mature level of government to another. But last Friday, the premier changed her tune, and at a news event a safe distance up the highway in Richmond Hill, told Tory and Toronto Council that the Ontario government wouldn’t be supporting road tolls in Toronto after all. Instead, she dangled funding, a gift that might have been generous under other circumstances, of $170 million a year from the gas tax, for transit in Toronto, by 2021. It doesn’t take a great deal of insight to understand the motivation for Wynne’s flip-flop. There is an election coming up next year, the Liberals are polling rock bottom, and Progressive Conservative leader Patrick Brown has signaled his opposition to a plan that does impact 905 voters/motorists in the pocket book. His candidates might well prevail in some of those ridings - enough of those ridings to - gasp! - defeat the government. So of course - fast as you can say "move that gas plant!", Wynne’s Liberals shifted their support from a sensible plan and replaced it with an inadequate one. It is in character, and to give Wynne and her predecessor credit for cunning if not statesmanship, it is a strategy that’s worked well for them in the past. Support for the ill-advised Scarborough subway extension cemented wins in Scarborough Guildwood in 2013. And moving the aforementioned natural gas plants in Oakville and Mississauga helped bring about a Liberal win in 2011. But what works for politics doesn’t necessarily do the job for policy. For once, Toronto Council had gathered the strength to get the policy just right, and as usual, the province played cowardly politics.

Alternate reality beckons at Bathurst-Wilson I’ve always believed reality is bad enough. It’s bad enough Oswald shot Kennedy and terrorists drove airplanes into the World Trade Center. It’s awful that human beings are affecting the climate on a planetary scale and bringing on a mass extinction. But there are people here in Toronto who want, or perhaps need, something other than the reality we have. A billboard now sits on top of Steve’s Restaurant - a place at Bathurst and Wilson which serves a great breakfast - broadcasting a strange message. On it, a man with roundframe spectacles pokes at airplane contrails with a weirdly elongated index finger. "Are you kidding me," the caption says. "Water vapour?"

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto The woman behind the billboard is Suzanne Maher, who was born and raised in North Toronto but moved to Muskoka after being diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder. Maher has come to believe metal particles are being sprayed behind airplanes by a worldwide conspiracy of governments and the powerful to engineer "global supremacy and military domi-

nation." Why this would happen is vague, and the evidence for chemtrails is nonsense, but believers in "geoengineering" expand their alternative reality to include things people like me justifiably fear, such as Alzheimer’s and Monsanto Corporation. Maher, who also arranged chemtrail ads on the Yonge-University subway in 2015 and 2016, says many in Toronto are open to what her group, ByeByeBlueSky, can teach. "Once you find out about it," she says, "you can’t unlearn it." I asked if she’s ever doubted the truth of what she’s learned, even for a moment, and no, she hasn’t. Neither have others who believe in chemtrails. I’m afraid for them. The

shattering "truth" they’ve embraced - governments are poisoning them for profit takes hold of their lives. How could it not? In a world of "alternative facts" and weakened traditional media, we can expect more of this. This April, Maher’s group has a booth at Toronto’s Green Living Show for the first time. Back on Bathurst, there’s no telling how many people coming in for eggs benedict or carrying bags from the No Frills across the street will fall down the rabbit hole by then. Kaitlyn Cup scores lacrosse team TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic Secondary School will field a lacrosse team this spring. The Kaitlyn Cup lacrosse tournament held Jan. 27 at The Barn Elite Performance Centre in Oshawa netted approximately $3,000 to equip 15 students with field lacrosse equipment. The tourney’s success was an early 15th birthday present for Kaitlyn Cooke, a Mimico Mountaineers lacrosse goalie who pushed to create her north Etobicoke high school’s firstever coed field lacrosse team. "I’m super excited," Kaitlyn said when The Guardian first told her story two weeks ago. "This is an unforgettable moment for me. It’s something I’ll tell my children and grandchildren about." Her dad, Chris, couldn’t be more proud. "It’s heartwarming," Chris said of the outpouring of support for the Kaitlyn Cup. "I’m extremely proud of Kaitlyn. She’s one of these people who keeps her emotions inside. It was great to see her bursting at the seams." Kaitlyn Cup marked anoth-

er first for the teen - her first goal on her dad, who is an elite, semi-pro lacrosse goalie with Six Nations in Caledonia. The 40-year lacrosse veteran plays goalie on four teams. "She passed across the crease and she scored. The look on her face - it was astonishment. She beat her dad," Chris said, of the first time his daughter had played against him. "Her first Facebook post thanked her supporters. The next one said, ’If I can score on Cookie (Chris), anyone can.’ She was beyond ecstatic." The tight-knit lacrosse community, fuelled by social media, made it happen, Chris said. Kaitlyn learned from school officials they’d start a team - if she could secure the equipment. So she went to her father, "’Dad, how are we going to do this?’" Chris recalled. Chris put out a call on Facebook. Within hours, the lacrosse community had mobilized. The lacrosse community is a family. It’s like no other sport. That’s why I encouraged my kids to get into it," Chris said of Kaitlyn, and her younger brother, Joshua, 11, who plays

box lacrosse. One friend donated $1,000 worth of floor time at The Barn. Another friend who works at ILA Sports in Six Nations is providing new equipment at a discount. One man dropped a trunk full of lacrosse equipment at Kaitlyn’s school after seeing a spot on Kaitlyn Cup on CTV News. Chris later learned the man is the father of a Scarborough Saints’ lacrosse player he’d coached years ago. "We’ll make it happen. We’ll highlight it as a First Nations’ sport," Joanne Melo, Monsignor Percy Johnson’s principal, said of the lacrosse team. Again, volunteers are mobilizing, this time to offer coaching to the students, who are new to lacrosse. "We’re taking 15 kids who’ve never held a stick before and getting them off their iPads and phones and onto the field," Chris said. "If we can put this tournament together so fast, we can put this team together so fast. We’ll get it done. "Lacrosse is Canada’s national summer sport. We’re celebrating Canada 150. It’s perfect."

Irvin Mintz,

Lacrosse goalie Kaitlyn Cooke, 14, was the motivator behind the Kaitlyn Cup fundraiser Friday. Its success means her high school will field its first-ever, coed field lacrosse team.

Making It Easier Since 1931

COLUMN

Tory hit with two big losses It has been a bad week for our mayor. Within the space of five days, John Tory was defeated on two signature policies, both of which had cost considerable political capital to pursue but fell apart anyway. The first came Friday, when Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne announced that despite Toronto council’s approval, she would not allow Toronto to impose a road toll on the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway. Supporting road tolls was probably the biggest risk that Tory has taken in a relatively cautious term of office, and getting councillors to stand behind it was a powerful assertion of mandate. Tory hadn’t supported road tolls historically, and they are unpopular in parts of the city. Doug Ford, who came in second to Tory in 2014’s mayoral race, was already using it as a talking point.

DAVID NICKLE The City But the plan would help support the costly unfunded infrastructure program that Tory inherited and then added to, with a subway in Scarborough and an elevated highway downtown. It was a linchpin in a fiscally-sustainable city not the only element, but a major one. And then on Tuesday, Tory retreated on what might have been another element in that sustainability: a plan to contract out garbage collection in Scarborough, or at least test it in the marketplace. On this one, it seemed as though Tory didn’t even

have the support of his own council. But it wasn’t for lack of trying. Tory announced his support for the plan the moment it was released, and maintained it even in the face of high-profile opposition and information suggesting that Scarborough was well served by city workers and had waste-diversion rates that were the envy of the town. Tory insisted that wasn’t the problem - that he simply understood the matter needed more study, and so moved to refer the matter back to staff for another report - that everything was fine. It sure didn’t seem that way. David Nickle is a reporter and columnist covering Toronto City Hall for Metroland Media Toronto. He can be reached at dnickle@insidetoronto.com. New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

Mighty Minds shines light on girls’ mental health New program thought to be largest of its kind in Canada

insidetoronto.com

TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com Suicide is the second leading cause of death for Canadian youths, and girls are hospitalized for suicide attempts at almost three times the rate of boys. It’s those stats, from the Canadian Mental Health Association and Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, and others like them that prompted Girl Guides of Canada (GGC) to take action when girls in the organization said they didn’t feel they had somewhere to discuss and learn about mental health. Seeing a need, GGC reached out to Kids Help Phone and The Psychology Foundation of Canada to help create a program for its members. The result is Mighty Minds, what is believed to be Canada’s largest and most comprehensive mental health education program for girls. "We heard some pretty scary stats about the high prevalence of mental health disorders in young people, as well as the fact that a lot of mental health disorders actually start before the age of 14, and one in three girls don’t talk about it," explained GGC CEO Jill Zelmanovits. "We started to think it’s really prevalent, and it’s happening when they’re quite young, and they don’t have a space (to discuss it), so we wanted to provide that space." The program took two years to create and is aimed at girls five through 17 years old. To launch it, candlelighting events to "shine a light on mental health" were held throughout Canada. The signature event, in Toronto at Nathan Phillips Square Saturday, Jan. 21,

"What I love about the program is that the programming is designed to be age appropriate and gives the kids exercises that they will engage in and understand," said Pounder. "It’s brought down to their level, but it gets them talking about those things at a young age. "The hope is that being proactive, that these (activities) will provide them with coping and resiliency skills and confidence, so that they can conquer their challenges more readily as they grow and not be afraid to reach out when they’re experiencing emotion that they’re having difficulty in handling." Through the program,

girls learn to identify emotions and how they impact behaviour. They also learn how our choice of words impacts people’s perceptions of mental

ience," noted Jennifer Murdoch, vice-president of counselling operations for Kids Help Phone. "Our hopes for this program is that it will start a lifelong conversation about mental wellness that leads to a society with less stigma around accessing help and letting others know when we’re vulnerable," Murdoch added. "Adolescence is a particularly difficult time, as it comes with a lot of changes. Ensuring that we provide the support for girls and young women is an important step in targeting the issues that aren’t always easy to talk about." As well as members, Mighty Minds has garnered positive feedback from GGC leaders. "The Guider feedback has been amazing," Zelmanovits shared. "They’ve said things like, ’I feel like this is something I’ve wanted to broach before, but I didn’t

necessarily have the tools to do it. I knew the girls wanted to talk about it, but I didn’t necessarily feel confident as a leader and now with the Mighty Minds program I feel confident to do that.’ " The program helps girls understand differences between mental health and mental illness, while empowering them to talk about both. It doesn’t teach girls they should always feel happy, but that it’s normal to experience a range of thoughts and emotions. "I hope girls and young women take away the message that even negative feelings are normal, and that there are healthy ways to manage them," said Dr. Robin Alter, trustee with The Psychology Foundation of Canada. "We all have some coping abilities to deal with negative states; some of them are more constructive than others. We can all improve in our ability to manage our emotions and mental states. The Mighty Minds program will teach girls and young women some of the more healthy ways to stay mentally and emotionally fit." The program also teaches girls how to support the mental health of others. While it was created for GGC members, anyone can download it free from the organization’s website. The printable program materials include a backgrounder, a list of resources, and activities categorized by age group. "It’s interesting, because they’re not activities where you would come away and say, ’Oh, wow, I’ve just completed a program on mental health,’ " Zelmanovits said. "They’re really fun and engaging activities that brings it into the girls’ language and experience . and what they come out with is quite amazing." Dan Pearce/Metroland

Clockwise from left, Lan To-Lee works at filling in her eyebrows at the Look Good Feel Better workshop last week at Sunnybrook hospital which teaches women who are going through or have completed cancer treatment how to care for their skin; To-Lee cracks up with laughter after applying a little too much make up; Bev Pearce prepares to model for fellow participants during the two-hour session; Pearce’s final look. The free two-hour workshop, led by industry-trained cosmetic advisors and hair alternative specialists, focuses on skin care and make-up products. Create more space with a basement makeover As real estate prices continue to rise across Ontario, many homeowners are opting to renovate their current homes rather than purchase new ones. Sellers looking to boost the resale value of their homes, should also consider a finished basement. According to design expert Kimberley Seldon, if you’re on the hunt for more square footage, rescuing your lower level is a great way to create more room for the whole family to enjoy. Turning a basement into a stylish, practical space that meets the demands of modern living doesn’t have to be daunting. When planning for a basement redesign, it’s important to start with an electrical plan and work with a team of experts.

To get you started, Seldon works with the Electrical Safety Authority to offer a few ideas that’ll help you achieve a revitalized basement that’s both beautiful and safe.

Get creative with your storage solutions, but just remember that a breaker panel can’t be located in a closet or bathroom.

SMART STORAGE

Basements often lack natural light, but a layered lighting plan that includes task lighting for a home office nook, decorative lighting on display shelves, and pot lights for ambient light will enhance the room’s overall level of brightness. Remember that all pot lights aren’t created equal. There are specific options for insulated and uninsulated spaces to prevent overheating and a potential fire. A Licensed Electrical Contractor can provide advice

When it comes to storage, the lower level of your home is typically a wealth of unused nooks and crannies, which can be creatively reimagined. Perhaps there is space under the stairs to hide away those items you use just once or twice a year? Adding lighting to a closet is always a good idea. A Licensed Electrical Contractor can provide advice on automated options and even the best bulbs to use.

LIGHT IT UP

and install the right pot lights for your space.

WARM AND TOASTY For the ultimate relaxed ambiance, consider adding a gas fireplace surrounded by built-ins for added storage. You can even illuminate some of your favourite objects if you have display shelving. Don’t forget that even when you’re installing a gas fireplace, there are still electrical considerations. You’ll need an outlet added in the right spot for power controls, such as the ignition transformer, thermostat and fan. Find more tips at poweryourreno.ca.

Eight arrested in break-and-enter ring Police believe they have broken up a "highly organized" break-and-enter ring that has targeted Etobicoke neighbourhoods in the past few months. On Wednesday, police announced they arrested eight people and recovered about $500,000 in stolen property. The investigation, dubbed Project High Class, began in the fall following multiple break-ins.Acting Insp. Joanne Rudnick said officers from the 22 Division major crime unit received information that a black GMC Acadia was seen near the scene of a break-in.At about 5:30 p.m. Jan. 28, officers spotted a vehicle matching that description near Eglinton Avenue and Royal York Road. "There were four occupants inside. Officers also observed a second vehicle, an Acura with three occupants, being operated suspiciously in the same area," Rudnick told reporters during a news conference at police headquarters. "The vehicles were stopped, investigated and the occupants were arrested. Officers recovered numerous items

Police then executed two search warrants and recovered $500,000 in stolen property, including jewelry, expensive hand bags, coin collections, stamp collections and electronics. Police are now working on identifying the owners of the recovered items and will be setting up a webpage containing photos of the

stolen goods."Investigation has identified items stolen in several residential break-ins within Toronto and as far away as Montreal," Rudnick alleged.Eight people, including three young offenders, have been charged."We’re calling them a ring," Rudnick said. LAMP celebrates Family Literacy Day CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com

Camisha Johnson, LAMP’s manager of children’s programs, said Family Literacy Day is just as much about the parents as it is the kids. "For us, it’s an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of reading, not just for children, but for adults as well," she said, noting that every child in attendance at Friday’s event would leave with a free picture book. "But for kids, it’s very important to start them reading at a young age even prenatal - because reading is the foundation for learning. That’s why we want to emphasize the importance of families taking time throughout the day to sit down with their little ones and enjoy a book." For more information about LAMP’s Early Years programs, go to bit.ly/2kaRos7.

Little Reggie Anderson was just one of about 30 tots and toddlers to take in storytime at Franklin Horner Community Centre this week in honour of Family Literacy Day. "He loves it here," Reggie’s mom Kiara said of her 15-month-old son, who’s been a regular at LAMP’s Early Years Program which hosted Friday’s literacy event - since he was just two months old. "Family Literacy Day means a lot. My greatgrandfather couldn’t read or write, so it kind of shows you how far we’ve come with literacy in not a lot of time." Launched in 1999, Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative celebrated on Jan. 27 every year to raise awareness of the

importance of reading and engaging in other literacyrelated activities as a family. This year’s LAMP-hosted celebration at Franklin Horner featured a pancake breakfast, a soccer demonstration courtesy of Little Kickers, a singalong led by Oak Learners, and, last but not least, a reading circle led by special guest Etobicoke-Lakeshore MPP Peter Milczyn. "There’s nothing more important than getting kids to like books and like reading very early on," Milczyn said. "Certainly as a father, nothing makes me happier than seeing my daughter (Ariana, 7) pick up a book and sit down on the couch to read it, because reading is just so incredibly important - it’s good for learning and it’s great for the imagination."

It’s not late to jettison Gardiner plan

ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM BACK OR NECK PAIN? BREAKTHROUGH

TREATMENT INTRODUCED FOR

BACK & NECK PAIN SUFFERERS

IT’S TIME TO END YOUR PAIN & GET YOUR LIFE BACK!

Last week’s shocking rejection of Toronto’s road tolls plan by the Wynne government evoked some ineffable truths about this city’s place in the provincial pecking order. First, Queen’s Park shows no sign of ending its parental relationship with City Hall. Second, with an election a year away, the Ontario government seems to care more about 905 votes than the 6ix. All of this is to say John Tory, who has banked his legacy on the building of pricey mega-infrastructure, now has a severe cashflow problem on his hands. With the Premier shutting tolling as an option, there is no real way to pay for everything on the city’s extensive shopping list. Barring a last-minute bailout, Tory and Toronto council will have to shed some items. But what to cut? It won’t be SmartTrack, the signature plank from Tory’s 2014 winning election campaign. And the Scarbor-

RAHUL GUPTA TO in Transit ough subway extension seems safe as well despite a ballooning price tag, thanks to strong council support. But the Gardiner Expressway? That is a totally different story. Despite Tory’s consistent championing of the Gardiner "hybrid"- rebuilding and extending the crumbling, elevated portion of the expressway to save motorists a handful of minutes on their commutes - he has no long-term funding plan in place now that road tolls are off the table for what has morphed into a billion dollars-plus project for construction alone.

With decisions looming for essential transit projects like the Relief subway line, the TTC’s No. 1 expansion priority, something’s gotta give. Doing away with 1.7-kilometres of antiquated expressway not only saves the city billions in construction and maintenance costs, it frees up prime waterfront land long held hostage. Given the plan to save the Gardiner received a bare majority of approval the first time around, it’s unlikely to expect a severe outcry if it gets scrapped. As he showed with his unprecedented pivot in support of tolls, John Tory has shown the capacity for thoughtful reconsideration of policy decisions. He should do the same with the Gardiner, and endorse its teardown. Rahul Gupta is Metroland Media Toronto’s transportation and infrastructure reporter. Reach him on Twitter @TOinTRANSIT
