Mere months after Mulvey’s diagnosis, Nordal founded Team Step Up, which has raised $96,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada through their annual participation in the Etobicoke MS Mandarin Walk.

"It’s very personal. It just feels like such a small thing I can do," said Nordal, 60. "I love when I can come over and help Mary Ellen with something. But this could make a bigger impact - whether a treatment or a cure someday to end this horrible disease."

’City within a city’ designed to double number of visitors Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) has pledged to create "a city within a city" on its 684acre racetrack site in Rexdale.

WEG’s CEO Jim Lawson said the horse racing operator’s newly released master plan for the Woodbine Racetrack lands seeks to transform the site into the "future urban heart of northwest Toronto," while at the same time keeping "the beauty of the horse" at the core of the project.

Under the new plan, Woodbine will continue on as a destination for horse racing and gaming, but also seek to integrate new expanded uses - including entertainment and cultural offerings, food and dining, hotel, shopping, office space, post-secondary education, recreation, health, wellness, and urban residential living.

The first phase of the development will include an expanded gaming district, complete with integrated entertainment, hospitality and related amenities - additions WEG expects will double the current number of Woodbine visitors to upwards of 12 to 15 million people a year.

Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) expects to name a private sector provider to

operate the Slots at Woodbine and to propose an expanded entertainment development by late summer 2017.

The Woodbine master plan was developed with LiveWorkLearnPlay (LWLP), WEG’s lead real estate development advisor, in partnership with a dynamic group of industry-leading professionals.

"The Woodbine Racetrack site represents a unique legacy opportunity to develop a place that can offer enduring social and economic value to the city and region, while ensuring the sustainability of the horse racing industry," LWLP’s Richard Martz said in a statement.

"WEG’s ambitious planning and development strategy has been designed to effectively respond to that context and opportunity."

Woodbine Racetrack reveals development master plan

Cash infusion for Trillium hospital system from Queen’s Park The Trillium hospital system will get 500 more beds at its Mississauga and Etobicoke Queensway locations as part of the Ontario government’s $9-billion budget for new health care centres.

Premier Kathleen Wynne said the projects at Trillium are desperately needed to meet demand as more and more people move into the area.

“The growth that is happening in this region is huge,” she told reporters after a campaign-style announcement about the redevelopment, which will include a tower for acutecare patients at the Mississauga site along with a new emergency room and more operating rooms.

Wynne, Finance Minister Charles Sousa — who represents a Mississauga riding — and Health Minister Eric Hoskins stood on a stage before more than a dozen hospital workers in a hot and crowded auditorium at the Mississauga site with cheering staff to tout Trillium as one of five new or redeveloped hospitals across the province in last Thursday’s budget.

Trillium chief executive Michelle DiEmanuele, a former senior civil servant at Queen’s Park, said the money for redevelopment at Trillium “really does set us up nicely.”

and the Queensway (150), 500 existing beds will be replaced.

A new Queensway Health Centre near Sherway Gardens will get a renovated and expanded urgent care centre — to divert patients from emergency rooms for less serious health problems — and new beds for rehabilitation and complex continuing care, freeing up beds at the Credit Valley hospital site also operated

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Mimico’s favourite historic watering hole is destined for the City of Toronto’s heritage register.

West-end councillors voted in favour of including the Blue Goose Tavern - a circa 1909 sports bar currently under consideration for a major restoration and redevelopment project - on the city’s municipal register of heritage properties at the May 2 session of Etobicoke York Community Council (EYCC).

In their report to EYCC, city planning staff noted the Blue Goose’s "cultural heritage value" and its design as a "well-preserved early-20th century commercial building with features of Edwardian Classicism" in their statement of the property’s significance.

Beloved by many in Mimico, the Blue Goose Tavern has a long history in the south Etobicoke community - beginning with its roots

as the Windsor Hotel.

Originally constructed adjacent to Mimico Train Station in 1892, the establishment burned down in 1905 and was rebuilt and reopened as the Windsor Public House in 1909.

While the popular neighbourhood hangout was purchased by the Chemij family in 1958, it wasn’t until 1971 that its name was officially changed to the Blue Goose Tavern - a nickname it got from a blue-tinged steam engine whose engineer used to make frequent stops at the pub while passing through town.

"As the Blue Goose Tavern, the bar was associated in the late 20th century and afterward with Mimico’s famed sports culture, with the proprietors supporting local hockey, soccer, lacrosse and baseball teams," city staff further noted in their report recommending the site’s inclusion on the heritage register.

That application seeks to

"retain and restore" the existing three-storey mixeduse building that currently houses the Blue Goose Tavern on its ground floor and 18 affordable dwelling units on its second and third levels.

If ultimately approved,

the redevelopment of the site would include the construction of a fourth storey and an east-side addition, a new microbrewery in the basement, a renovated restaurant on the ground level, and a total of 18 new rental dwelling units on the upper levels of the building.

The proposal also calls for an infill development on the remainder of the site, including two single-detached dwellings, a pair of semi-detached dwellings, and nine townhouse units.

Ontario one correction away from a debt crisis The Kathleen Wynne government turned the fiscal page Thursday and introduced a balanced budget, and if you listened carefully you could hear the congratulatory backslapping from Toronto all the way to Port Severn.

It was 10 years ago when Ontario ran balanced budgets in 2006 and 2007, but that gave way to $20-billion-a-year deficits in 2008 and 2009 when the economy tanked and the Grits had no choice but to hand the auto industry a $3.3 billion lifeline, or face the collapse of auto manufacturing in Ontario.

At the time, then premier Dalton McGuinty made a promise to balance the budget by 2017, and while the Liberals should be commended for getting their budget in order, there’s a bogeyman lurking in the province’s balance sheet.

The provincial debt for this fiscal year is expected to hit $312 billion, and in a recent meeting with Metroland Media editors, Senior Economist with RBC Robert Hogue said "tough medicine" is needed to tackle the debt.

"Debt has increased quite significantly and debt to GDP is running at 40 per cent," he said.

In 2016/17, the province expects to spend $11.4 billion on interest payments on that debt. That’s nearly $1 billion a month just to service existing debt, and in case you need to be reminded, that coin comes from your pocket.

To put it in terms we can all relate to, every person in Ontario would need to pony up $22,000 to pay off the debt.

Hogue said this massive debt leaves the province without a rainy day fund in the event the economy slows to a point requiring stimulus spending, and if interest rates rise, as expected they will, the interest payments on the debt would skyrocket.

We agree with Hogue when he says it’s time the province create a plan to tackle the debt by creating a "hard target for debt to GDP ratio" that sits much lower than where we are now.

However, we didn’t get that Thursday. What we did get was a desperate Liberal government waving costly carrots in voters’ faces.

The Wynne government’s shopping list includes a drug plan for those under 24 costing $465 million a year and $200 million next year to increase affordable licensed child care spaces.

Noble programs for sure, but not at a time when the province continues to add about $10 billion a year in new debt as long as they hold power, and if the Wynne government continues to spend like drunken sailors on shore leave - generations of Ontario residents will be buried under a mountain of debt from which they may never escape.

Toronto Tamils ready to rebuild their homeland In a Scarborough banquet hall, I realized the civil war in Sri Lanka is truly over.

Greater Toronto’s Tamil people came here because of that war. They’re the largest Tamil diaspora outside Sri Lanka, and helped make Scarborough, Markham and Richmond Hill what they are today.

They came from a country where they felt the majority hated them, discriminated against them, and in many cases tried to kill them.

The war ended in 2009 with scenes of horror, as trapped civilians and fighters died by the thousands.

lected in Scarborough and Markham for the Tamil Tigers and their breakaway state. Local businesses gave willingly, or unwillingly.

The war was merciless.

Here, thousands waved the Tiger flag at rallies or carried banners demanding a Tiger-led Tamil Eelam. No compromise seemed possible.

In 2009, bombs were falling on aunts and cousins back home. Protesters in Toronto blocked the Gardiner Expressway.

Afterwards, Tamils here elected a "transnational government" to keep the fight going.

But Sri Lanka’s government changed in 2015. Separatist voices died away.

Compromise, that most Canadian of values, has taken hold.

At their press conference, the business owners were candid. Both sides, they say, feel guilty about the war. They know it was a terrible mistake.

"We, the diasporas, were the ones that helped fund the war for 35 years," adds Stan Muthulingam, the group’s co-chairperson.

Certainly, justice must be done for any atrocities suffered by Tamils in Sri Lanka. But those who made the trip say reconstruction and development are needed now, and the island’s government needs investors.

Eventually, war ends.

At Guardian deadline, Team Step Up was this year’s top online team for the Etobicoke walk, raising more than $13,000. Nordal, the team captain, is this year’s top online participant, raising more than $6,000 in donations.

Canada has the highest rate of MS in the world, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada reported.

Mulvey is one of an estimated 100,000 Canadians living with the disease.

MS is an unpredictable, often disabling, auto-immune disease of the central nervous system that attacks myelin, the protective covering of the nerves,

causing inflammation and often damaging the myelin.

MS symptoms may include extreme fatigue, lack of co-ordination, weakness, tingling, vision problems, bladder issues, cognitive impairment and mood changes.

Mulvey, 62, monitors news around the world of research and treatment for her primary progressive MS, such as a new drug called OcrevusTM just approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States.

Educating herself about MS research breakthroughs and new drugs empowers Mulvey to advocate for herself with her doctor, she said.

"When you go in to see a neurologist, it really helps if you sound like you know what you’re talking about," she said. "Such as, ’there’s this new drug is in the U.S. When will it come to Canada?’ It gives you some credibility.

"In my opinion, in our medical system today, you have to take a lot of things into your own hands."

In 2009, Mulvey was "fairly mobile" when she was diagnosed with primary progressive MS after multiple MRIs. With time, she lost the ability to drive. She walked with a cane, then with a walker. Today, she is in a wheelchair and requires

Now I’m in a wheelchair pretty much all the time, and I have weakness in both my arms and my hands," Mulvey said.

vey of her ability to work, which she does from home full-time as a human resources specialist with IBM. "Work gives me a reason to get out of bed in the morning," she said. "It keeps me motivated. It

makes me feel valued in some respect. It’s good for me."

Nor has MS stolen Mulvey’s optimism and positive attitude.

"We all have our cross to bear. This is mine," Mulvey said of her MS. "I had two

pretty amazing role models. My paternal grandmother and my father had significant health issues.

They were so incredibly positive all the time."

But Nordal is blunt about her sister’s MS: "It sucks big-time. We’ve always been close. Our two families bought a recreational property together.

We vacation together. It’s very hard to watch some of the things we all take for granted be taken away from Mary Ellen."

And while Mulvey lives with her MS, it also affects her family.

"The MS Society helps people who have the disease. But caregivers and families need as much support as those who live with the disease," Mulvey said.

At Guardian deadline, the 195 walkers and 32 teams that had registered with the Etobicoke Mandarin MS Walk had raised nearly $40,000 - 49 per cent of their $81,000 goal.

"I love the sense of community I feel when I participate in the walk," Nordal said. "Every little bit that anybody does helps. It helps keep hope alive.

Student sounds fill mall Woodbine Mall is once again hosting the Education Week and Festival of the Arts festivities of the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB).

The five-day celebration, which wraps up Friday, features daily music, dance, drama and art presentations by student artists from more than 60 local elementary and high schools in Woodbine’s Centre Court.

"Woodbine Mall has hosted this community

event for more than 30 years, and we are honoured that the TCDSB continues to return with their program every year," Woodbine Marketing Director Chris Couch said in a statement.

This year’s line-up of performances includes Latin and ballroom dancers from Bishop Marrocco, the Holy Cross Glee Club, the St. Thomas Aquinas jazz band, the St. Andre drum line, and the Father Serra string ensemble, among many others.

DENISE HARRIS denise.harris@sympatico.ca Like most small towns, the Village of Islington had its share of natural leaders with the energy, imagination and foresight to stimulate progress. David Lyle Streight was one such community builder.

He was born in 1842, the second son of John Streight and Jane McDowell, who had settled in 1836 on a bush farm near Kemptville in Grenville County. David was named for his uncle, David McDowell, who operated a contracting business in Islington. In 1856, McDowell offered to teach his nephew the carpentry trade through a five-year apprenticeship in Islington. David would live with his uncle, attend school in the winter, and earn an average of $40 per annum.

David’s parents saw this as a wonderful opportunity to provide for their son’s future.

After the apprentice-

ship, David Streight completed his first job as a journeyman carpenter in Etobicoke, but work was scarce and Streight moved to several different places in the U.S. and Canada. In January 1868, he returned to Islington and started his own highly successful contracting business. In 1870 he married Elizabeth McKeown, a teacher in Islington.

In 1878, the new Credit Valley Railway (CVR) was opening its line across Etobicoke. Streight decided this was a wonderful opportunity to start a retail lumber and coal business to augment his contractor work. However, the CVR had no plans to build the siding at Islington that his plans would require.

Undeterred, Streight approached CVR management directly and presented his case. The railway agreed, as long as the three affected landowners (Woolings, McBride and Coulter) donated a 20-foot (six meter) wide graded piece of

David Streight and his wife, Elizabeth, standing in front of the lumber yard office on the west side of Canning Avenue (now Cordova Avenue) just north of the CPR tracks. Their house can be seen on the right, on the east side of Canning Avenue. land along the north side of the track, plus $250 in cash.

At this time, Cordova Avenue did not exist, and Islington Avenue was discontinuous between Dundas and Bloor streets. Residents had complained for

years that poor access to their village deterred growth. At Streight’s suggestion, Etobicoke’s council agreed that the arrival of the CVR would be the perfect time to open a new north/south street through

Islington.

Villagers contributed half the cost of this new road and the township paid the other half. When the new road was laid out, 1.5 acres (.6 ha) of Mr. Woolings land was severed and

sold at auction to Streight.

In 1880 he built a family home on this lot, seen in the above photo. The new street was named Canning Avenue after the reeve, Matthew Canning. (This street was renamed Cordova Avenue in 1947.)

The CVR opened the railway siding as promised, as well as a small flagstop station just west of Islington Avenue. In 1884 the Canadian Pacific Railway bought the financiallytroubled CVR. Streight dropped the contractor arm of his business in 1893 as the lumber and coal operations were far more lucrative. He continued to take a leadership role in Islington for several decades to come, as we will learn in a future column.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies.

And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.”

Co-op student of the year worked at Sunnybrook Pearl Zaki is one of the University of Waterloo’s top co-op students.

The Etobicoke resident recently received a 2016 University of Waterloo Co-op Student of the Year Award in Applied Health Sciences.

Zaki, a 2014 grad of Michael Power/St. Joseph High School, received recognition for her work for two terms as a clinical research assistant in the palliative care centre at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.

She collected data, managed various research databases, dealt with patients in clinical trials and conducted several research projects, the university stated.

She also wrote two manuscripts that will be submitted in the peer-reviewed Journal of Pain Management."Our students never cease to amaze us," Peggy

Jarvie, associate provost, co-operative and experiential education at Waterloo, said in a statement."The contributions they make on their work terms are truly remarkable. This year’s winners embody the worldclass talent that the University has become known for over the past six decades."The university awarded six students in arts, science, engineering, environment, applied health sciences and mathematics.

The University of Waterloo said it is Canada’s top innovation university.

It is the world’s largest co-operative education system of its kind with more than 36,000 students, the university stated.

Major University hearing study seeks participants.

Connect Hearing, with a leading hearing researcher at Ryerson University, seeks participants for a hearing study investigating the factors that can influence better hearing. All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge. The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve life-changing hearing healthcare across Canada.

New bike lanes proposed New bike lanes are on tap for Renforth Drive in Etobicoke and on various streets surrounding downtown Toronto in 2017.

Toronto’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee will be considering the $250,000 addition to the city’s bicycle network at its May 9 meeting.

The report from city staff recommends install-

ing bicycle lanes on Renforth Drive between Eglinton Avenue West and Rathburn Road in Etobicoke. As well, the report recommends installing contraflow bicycle lanes on Bellevue Avenue between Wales Avenue and a point 40 metres south of College Street; Dennison Avenue northbound between Queen Street West and Wales Ave-

nue; and Wolesley Street westbound between Augusta and Denison Avenues.

Other lanes include an eastbound lane on Davenport Road between Spadina and Madison Avenues, and switching the contraflow bike lane on Waterloo Avenue between Dufferin Street and Gladstone from westbound to eastbound.

Tory, Wynne escalate passive aggressiveness The mutual acts of passive aggression between the provincial Liberals and the Mayor of Toronto continued to escalate this week - as not coincidentally, the implications of Kathleen Wynne’s penultimate budget before the elections in 2018 continued to sink in across the city.

Liberal Peter Milzcyn, a former city councillor now representing Etobicoke Lakeshore, reminded us that Progressive Conservatives don’t have a great record on funding transit and housing in Toronto.

Best to settle in for the long haul: another year at least, and who knows how much longer if they both get re-elected.

Use of runway not due to weather To the editor: Re: Pearson issues apology, April 27 The GTAA’s assertion that the unprecedented daily use of the north/south runways is due to weather conditions is entirely false.

Never, in the entire history of the airport has it been necessary to use the north/south runways for 20-plus days in a row. A review of weather conditions since runway 05/23 construction began shows nothing out of the ordinary,

advance. It seems the GTAA has already decided to continue using the north/ south runways regardless of weather conditions.

There are two east/west runways (06L/24R, 06R/24L) south of 05/23 that could be used, yet they are used even less than before construction started. The GTAA is not being forthright in what is going on and has a serious credibility issue.
