DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Rexdale was not kind to Terrence Rodriguez. Seventeen years ago, Rodriguez - biologically female at the time - came out to his family as a lesbian. "I had Holy Water sprinkled on me," recalled Rodriguez. "Half of my family disowned me." At 14 years old, Rodriguez left the Roman Catholic school he was attending, Monsignor Percy Johnson, and enrolled in Kipling Collegiate. When he later concluded that he needed to transition, it didn’t get any better - finding that many in the school’s large cohort of socially conservative Muslim students were just as unwelcoming as the Roman Catholic kids from Monsignor Johnson. "I didn’t really escape it," he said. "I was always looking over my shoulder people were heckling me, following me home from school, writing graffiti on my locker. I think the scariest was that there was a perception by males in the community that all I had to do was have sexual relations with them and I would change my mind." In 2003 Rexdale under those circumstances, Rodriguez felt he had a stark choice. "Do I stay in the closet and be safe, or do I come out and look over my shoulder? And I realized I may have to watch over my shoulder, but I would be safe because I wouldn’t have the threat of selfharm or committing suicide. That was the ultimate fear." Rodriguez made the comments far from Etobicoke, just after he had finished speaking at the Par-

Terrence Rodriguez was at Toronto City Hall, to help raise the Rainbow Flag along with Tornto PFLAG. He founded Rex Pride, a Rexdale group helping LGBTQ young people in north Etobicoke. ents and Families of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) flag raising this month at Toronto City Hall, on behalf of the organization he founded in 2012, Rex Pride. Rodriguez started the organization after having spent time as a youth worker, who because of his identity was frequently referred cases of young people struggling with their sexual and gender identities. He eventually got tired of simply referring those people to agencies in downtown Toronto, and saw a need to establish a local agency to help his young

clients deal with their sexuality in the community in which they lived. In a real sense, the organization is a response to Rodriguez’ experience: growing up queer on the edges of a city that is arguably internationally famous for its openness to LGBTQ people. "Rexdale is definitely a different experience from that expectation," said Rodriguez. "A lot of people forget that the GTA is not just the downtown core. In Rexdale alone there are over 60,000 people. And you never hear anybody saying

found that the very diversity that enriches Rexdale also makes it more difficult for LGBTQ young people to come out honestly, as newcomer groups often isolate themselves and hold close to old sexual and social mores. And finally, there are simple socioeconomic factors. "It’s a lower income neighbourhood, people are living in poverty, dealing with issues with that, and racially profiled people. You have gangs and violence - so that the queer community is completely

suppressed and isolated," he said. Rex Pride is an effort to break through that isolation and Rodriguez acknowledges, it’s a big job. The group, which currently is helping 20 youth, has received a four-year Trillium Ontario grant to do outreach in the community and so far has partnered with four area schools to help make for a safer environment for LGTBQ young people. "It’s not a Band-Aid fix," he said. "People say, oh do training for an hour? That’s not enough. For community work there has to be an idea of what’s going on. There’s the policies and procedures reviews (for institutions). There is the staff training, a minimum one day and has to be followed up annually." And for the young people Rex Pride helps? "I have my journey, we all have our own journeys, but I can’t tell anyone what their journey is," said Rodriguez at the podium below the Rainbow flag at City Hall. "We don’t tell people what they need to do. We just let them tell us what they need from us."

Death of on-site parking for Blue Goose Tavern patrons worries neighbours CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Proposed parking - or rather the perceived lack thereof - has proven problematic for Mimico residents concerned by future plans for the Blue Goose Tavern site. In addition to "retaining and restoring" the existing four-storey tavern and its 18 upper-floor rental units, an Allegra Homes development application currently under consideration for 1 Blue Goose St. seeks develop 13 townhouse units on the 2,240-square-metre property - an infill development that would eat up the popular watering hole’s 66-space parking lot.

That prospect didn’t sit well with many of the 40 or so local residents who gathered to discuss the proposal during a cityhosted community consultation on May 17. "I live just across the street from the Blue Goose, and on the weekends you can’t get parking over there because people don’t use public transit," said Marsha Sands, a Cavell Street resident. "It says in the application not to worry, that there won’t be a lot of parking on the street, but where are the 50- to 100-odd cars going to park, then?" In total, the Blue Goose development application proposes 19 on-site parking spaces - one beneath each of the 13 townhouse units, five surface spots for residents of the 18 rental dwelling units, and one carshare space. There is, however, no on-site parking proposed for patrons of the renovat-

Architect Thomas Payne describes his plans for the Blue Goose Tavern, during a public consultation meeting held at St. Leo Catholic School. ed Blue Goose Tavern which, if approved, will include a new basement microbrewery, a rejuvenated ground-level restaurant, and an east-side addition.

Instead, all tavern-related parking will be relocated to area streets - a situation some loyal patrons argued would "kill" the Blue Goose, a tavern fa-

mous for its sponsorship of local hockey and lacrosse teams. "A big part of the Blue Goose’s heritage is the aspect of its sports affiliation. A lot of teams have roots going there to enjoy a drink after a game," said one long-time patron. "But, the way you’ve got it constructed, the lack of parking is going to kill any business - I guarantee it." While BA Group, a consulting firm working on the Blue Goose application, conceded that the proposed on-site parking allotment of 19 spaces falls short of requirements under both the Former City of Etobicoke Zoning Code and City of Toronto bylaws, BA’s transportation planning consultant Alun Lloyd cited several recent studies that indicate the parking proposals may prove sufficient. BA Group consultants studied "peak observed demands" on Blue Goose’s

patron parking lot at several dates and peak times in June, August and September of last year, concluding that parking demand ranged between 22 and 39 vehicles. Meanwhile, the onstreet parking supply within 300 metres of the Blue Goose during those same peak periods of parking demand ranged between 55 and 105 spaces, according to BA Group’s report, which concluded that "on-street parking supply can reasonably and acceptably accommodate such short-term demands." "What we’re asking of you as a community, is for a project like this, is that parking situation something that you would be able to live with?" Lloyd inquired of local residents at the May 17 meeting. The answer he received, as voiced in unison by a number of those present, was an emphatic "no".

ABOUT US

Weathered flags should be grounded With Canada Day celebrations, marking the 150th year in our nation’s history, rapidly approaching, flags will be flying from coast to coast. In many cases, bright, pristine Canadian flags will be front and centre at legions, government offices, businesses, and private residences. They’ll be prominent at countless special events and even attached to cars and trucks. And, unfortunately, there might be a few cases where our cherished symbol looks less than pristine, maybe even a bit ragged and threadbare. It might surprise some to realize that there are some pretty It might surprise specific rules regardsome to realize ing the display of our emblem, the that there are some nation Maple Leaf. Policies are in place pretty specific rules to govern how the flag regarding the is flown from everything from attaching it display of our to a vehicle or building, to suspending it nation emblem, above a street, or usthe Maple Leaf. ing it on a flagpole. For example, if a flag is suspended above a street, the rule is: "The upper part of the leaf (the points of the leaf) should face north in an east-west street. The upper part of the leaf should face east in a north-south street." If you want to hang a flag flat against a surface, here’s the rule you’ll need to follow: "If hung horizontally, the upper part of the leaf (the points of the leaf) should be up and the stem down. If hung vertically, the flag should be placed so that the upper part of the leaf points to the left and the stem to the right from the point of view of the observer facing the flag." Want to fold your flag? The ceremonial folding of our national flag involves six to eight people following six specific steps. Has your flag seen better days? "When a flag becomes tattered and is no longer in a suitable condition for use, it should be destroyed in a dignified way." We’re not quite sure what constitutes a ’dignified’ disposal, but we do concur with the notion that the Maple Leaf should fly only in a pristine condition. To display Canada’s national flag is to demonstrate one’s patriotism and appreciation for our good fortune in being able to live in the best country on the planet. To display a weathered, shabby version is to do a disservice to this most important symbol of our nation.

Bringing stories of Toronto’s suburbs downtown I remember being disappointed two years ago when the Toronto Public Library released the Toronto Poetry Map. It’s a great idea: dots on the map, each linked to a snippet of verse describing that place, or this intersection in the city. Except, some downtown places had overlapping dots, swollen with multiple mentions. All of Scarborough had just four dots. The Toronto Zoo, Scarborough Bluffs, and the Hav-A-Nap Motel got mentioned, but not much else. For our other suburbs, things weren’t much better. Etobicoke, on that map, was a poetry desert. Ditto, East York. Where were the words describing them? How can this be a city whose stories

men going to East Point Park for sex, the Scarborough East Pow Wow, a school literacy centre, a Caribbean restaurant, fights at a dollar store, fantasies of orangutans escaping the zoo. The best-known Toronto novels and poetry are about the old Toronto, partly because many are set in Toronto of the past. So, I’m grateful for the "What’s Your Story?" contest from which the Ontario Book Publishers Organization started to draw out diverse, but unpublished, writers from Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke and East York. "Diverse people produce diverse stories," says Holly Kent, executive director, but it’s hard to get suburban writers to literary

events happening downtown. "It can seem very insular to an outsider." This is the second year the group has received stories and poems inspired by these four former suburban cities. Once again, Kent says, the contest jury was "floored" by their quality. You’ll be able to see this year’s winners reading their work this fall. Now that the city’s major art groups and festivals are finally discovering the suburbs, the literary scene is making it out there too. Through fiction, we’ll find more of the truth about this city. We might finally understand each other. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

Toronto tech talent flourishes in the 416 City considered the place to start, establish a tech-based business HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s technology ecosystem is a breeding ground for the latest startups and innovative technology. Companies like Uber, Google and Twitter have flocked to Toronto to establish Canadian headquarters because it’s seen as the place to foster the next wave of technology to move society forward. And it’s not on a whim. There are more than 400,000 people employed in the tech sector in the city and it is still growing. Because of that, the City of Toronto is putting more emphasis on nurturing its tech talent. According to Scarborough Southwest councillor Michelle Holland, the city’s first appointed official as advocate for the innovation economy, it starts by tackling the sector’s branding issue. "Toronto really punches above its weight when it comes to being a tech city. It’s the number 1 city for startups and a great place for people to start and grow a business," Holland said. "But the problem is our own Canadian-ness, we don’t beat the drum enough. These guys are top talent at the forefront of thought leadership and innovation and we need to show that. The tech talent in Toronto is doing phenomenal and we just need to get the word out and not be so shy about it. We need to get over that." Her role, although still in its

She aims to create growth in the technology sector in Toronto and the Toronto-Waterloo Corridor, with a focus on attracting and retaining talent with diverse backgrounds. Holland is currently working with a team out of the Civic Innovation Office at city hall to develop "a narrative" for Toronto’s global tech brand. "We’re trying to retain talent and talent stays because they have opportunities to build their business. It’s not about the cuisine or the diversity, as amazing as that is. In this ecosystem to retain talent and

draw it from other countries you need opportunities, and we’re always looking at how to do that," Holland explained. In the last few years, Toronto has continued to push and create these opportunities for startups by offering incubators, accelerators and access to the tech community and it’s beginning to pay off. Toronto has a growing startup ecosystem containing between 2,500 and 4,100 active tech startups, according to a 2016 report released by TechToronto. It also states Toronto is the strongest startup ecosystem in Canada. "There’s this vast network of support

and there’s great talent here. I think there’s also a really good community you can tap into," said Chris Rickett, the manager of entrepreneurship services with Start Up Here Toronto. The economic development initiative was launched to support startups and connect entrepreneurs to programs, resources and events to help them start, grow and scale their business. "There are over 60 incubators and accelerators from idea-stage programs like The Founder Institute to early-stage incubators like the DMZ, and bigger organizations

like MaRs and OneEleven that (help at the) post-seed stage. So there’s support for tech companies at every level giving them a chance to connect and get the right support at the right time." But Toronto wasn’t always that way Rickett describes. Grant Brigden, the founder of Rover Parking, an app that allows residents to rent out their driveway as a parking spot in the city, remembers a time when Toronto was floundering to grasp what startups needed to thrive in the city. "It’s gotten 300 per cent better in the last year and half.

Just the way people are thinking about startups in Toronto will push it to become one of the top leaders for tech," Brigden told Metroland Media. He launched Rover Parking about two years ago and for eight years, until 2010, he worked in Silicon Valley for the company OpenWaves, which was later sold. He admits that when he decided to try and get funding for the company in the city, it was different from Silicon Valley, Toronto was "super frustrating". "When we started there wasn’t much help. The problem Toronto had, if I had to simplify it, was they were confused between scale up and startup," he explained. "When we went looking for money, they asked for things like metrics that startups don’t have yet. Those numbers come at the stage of a scale up." But Toronto has improved, he said, mainly due to the rush of companies like Facebook, Autodeck and Slack taking notice of Toronto’s potential. "We’re starting to see a lot of organizations starting to realize they need to set up in Toronto because the next wave of entrepreneurs and startups will be a lot bigger in Toronto than the wave before that," Brigden said. Rickett agrees: "The tech landscape in Toronto has kind of blown up. That global recognition of talent and innovative thinking is happening. We’re just starting to scratch the surface on what Toronto’s tech communities can do."

High schools’ Relays for Life raise six digits TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Two Etobicoke high schools’ years-long Relay for Life championing recently marked six-digits in fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society. Silverthorn Collegiate students and staff hit the $250,000 mark, while Martingrove Collegiate students and staff reached $100,000 in fundraising with this year’s relay, held at the schools on May 12. "Oh my God, this is amazing. It’s giving to such a good cause," said Mia Vucurovic, a Grade 12 Silverthorn Collegiate student who was the school’s relay event captain. "Who hasn’t been affected by cancer in their life? Everyone wants to make a difference." During a Relay for Life event, teams of family, friends, colleagues or students walk around a track to

celebrate cancer survivors, remember lost loved ones and to commit to raise funds to fight all types of cancer. "Relay for Life is a community of people fighting back against cancer," the Canadian Cancer Society states on its website. Cancer survivors kicked off both schools’ relays by walking the survivors’ lap before being joined by bright-eyed, eager students. People in the community were also encouraged to participate. Both relays reflected a festival-like atmosphere with carnival games and activities, including Twister, Nerf guns, water balloon fights and cookie decorating. Silverthorn raised $30,000 at this year’s event. Masha Shavrina, a Grade 11 Silverthorn, shared her experience as a cancer survivor. Silverthorn student Ken Duggan raised $1,200 to be-

come the school’s top relay fundraiser this year. "It was cool and encouraging for everyone else," Mia said. "We were all blown away by it." Martingrove surpassed $40,000, a fundraising high in the event’s four-year history. "Relay for Life is so personal. It brings people together," said Grade 12 Martingrove Collegiate student Mugdha Dave, 17, who cochaired the event with fellow student, Dafina Miftari. After Breast Cancer’s Susan Fulford spoke before the survivors’ lap, while Ivan Szlapetis spoke at the luminary ceremony of his treatment; he is the husband of a teacher. Students spelled the word "HOPE" with all the luminaries before changing it to "CURE" at the event’s end. "It was really inspirational and really touching," Mugdha said.

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

School communities began transition early l Continued from page 1

3672 Lake Shore Blvd. W., will take place on Tuesday, May 30 from 4 to 6 p.m., while the farewell to St. Teresa, 110 Tenth St., will happen on Thursday, June 1 from 4 to 6 p.m. "Basically, we’ll be taking a walk down memory lane," Aube said of the events, which will include historic photo displays, the creation of time capsules, and meet-and-greet opportunities. "We want to recognize the histories of St. Teresa (circa 1957) and Christ the King (circa 1947), but at the same time we want to celebrate The Holy Trinity and look forward to the next step, too." That next step, Aube added, is the amalgamation of the 275-studentstrong Christ the King school community with that of St. Teresa’s 210 students - all under one roof as The Holy Trinity Hammerheads.

To those ends, a brand new, three-storey, 530-pupil kindergarten to Grade 8 school is currently under construction in the heart of south Etobicoke to house the amalgamated Holy Trinity school community. Once complete, students are expected to move into the new school, located on Colonel Samuel Smith Park Drive, just south of Lake Shore Boulevard West, in January. For 10-year-old Christ the King student Margaret Dela Cruz, and her classmate Arnica Nandur, 11, the move will be bittersweet. "What I’m looking forward to in the new school is making new friends and a new beginning, because I can start over and try to concentrate a bit more," Margaret said. "But I’m going to miss these precious memories back here. It kind of makes me upset to leave, but I find it very happy that we’re go-

ing to join our schools, too." To help ease the transition of the merge and move for both students and staff alike, Aube said the school communities at Christ the King and St. Teresa have embarked on several joint projects and outings together over the last year or so. "We’ve been trying to do absolutely everything we can to bridge the two school communities. The kids have gone on trips together, we’ve gone on overnight camps together, we’ve done play days, guest speakers, and we’ve even had some joint parent council meetings together, just to kind of merge communities so that it’s as seamless as possible," she said, noting that a joint fun fair is also in the works for next month. "Both these schools have strong histories, with two strong and amazing communities, so I’m excited to see them finally come together."

Justin Greaves/Metroland

Margaret Dela Cruz, a student at Christ the King Catholic School, will soon be attending the new The Holy Trinity Catholic School on Col. Samuel Smith Park Drive.

Alderwood was originally known as New Toronto Park or New Toronto Heights, or simply as “the place above the tracks”. Alderwood was the home of the six O’Connor sisters who achieved great fame in the 1910’s touring North America’s vaudeville theatres. The O’Connor sisters were often featured on the same bill with stars such as Jimmie Durante, Al Jolson and Sophia Tucker.

ALDERWOOD HISTORY: Alderwood’s farms began to be subdivided for residential development in the 1920’s however most of this neighbourhood’s development occurred after World War II. Many of the streets in Alderwood are named after the original farmers in this area including Brown, Evans, Lunness and Horner. The Alderwood name officially came into use in 1933 when the local post office was opened. Robert Johnson a long time Alderwood resident, is credited with originating the name Alderwood. He derived this name from the First Nations word “Etobicoke,” meaning “the place where the alders grow”.

Pearson runway rehab complete Humber College celebrates 50 years in style CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com

Construction is now officially complete on Canada’s busiest runway. In a special e-update sent out to local residents before 7 p.m. May 16, Toronto Pearson International Airport’s Community Engagement team announced that the 46day project to rehabilitate Runway 05/23 had been completed earlier in the evening. The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) first embarked on the construction work - which included 200,000 square metres of asphalt resurfacing, 23,000 cubic metres of concrete excavation and replacement, and 420 kilometres of line paint markings - on March 28. Over the course of the project, 05/23’s east-west

runway was either partially or fully closed, meaning much of its traffic - which totals roughly 202,000 planes a year - was diverted to other runways, namely its north/ south runways. That diversion lead to a surge in noise complaints from Etobicoke residents living in the impacted communities of Alderwood, Long Branch and Markland Wood, as well as Mississauga residents. GTAA officials assured those residents yesterday that, with the reopening of Runway 05/23, runway usage will now "return to mainly easterly or westerly configurations." Additionally, officials also announced that a third phase of the rehabilitation project, which was originally slated to be undertaken this fall, was folded into the

recently completed phase 1 and 2 to "reduce the impact on our passengers and local residents." While the rehabilitation work on Runway 05/23 was Pearson’s only planned runway construction project planned for 2017, GTAA officials warned that some short-term closures of runways can still occur throughout the year for various reasons. For more information or to register a noise complaint, contact the GTAA’s Noise Management Office at http://bit.ly/2pWdu0P or 416-247-7682. Interested residents are also encouraged to attend Toronto Pearson’s next Community Environment and Noise Advisory Committee (CENAC) meeting on June 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the GTAA Administration Building, 3111 Convair Dr.

FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY

Humber opened its doors to its very first students on September 11, 1967. That year, there were 439 students and about 30 instructors. Extra-curricular activities included a baby carriage race, a formal dance, hockey and curling games, drama productions, a school newspaper called Ad Hoc and something called “The Pink Onion.” The editor of The Collage, Humber’s first yearbook, called the new school “a practical dream which has come true in a world of reality.” And that’s exactly what it was. Ontario’s college system started in 1967, when the Ontario provincial government created 24 colleges of applied arts and technology in response to a growing need for skilled workers and accessible, affordable career education. Humber’s first campus was at 3495 Lake Shore Blvd. W., just west of the current Lakeshore campus. Since then, Humber has changed. Significantly. Almost 31,000 students. Three campuses. More than 180 programs, including certificates, diplomas, postgraduate programs and honours bachelor’s degrees. 215,000 alumni. In those 50 years, our students, staff and faculty have done some pretty impressive things: • In 2017, our students won seven medals at the Skills Ontario competition: three gold, two silver and two bronze • We were named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers two years in a row (2016 and 2017) • Our athletes won numerous Ontario Colleges

Athletic Association and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association tournaments and awards • Our professors and alumni are regularly nominated for – and win – JUNO and Grammy awards • A team of Humber students, grads and faculty won gold, beating 54 other teams at the Culinary Olympics in Germany • Ron Suter, a 1981 marketing graduate, won the 2016 Premier’s Award for Business. Suter is executive vice-president of NBCUniversal Television and New Media Distribution Canada, and Universal Studios Canada • Our esteemed School for Writers, which turned 25 last year, has more than 330 alumni who have published more than 1,000 books To mark our 50th anniversary, there are some great things planned. There’s a website – www.humber50.ca – with archival photos, alumni profiles and an ongoing series of “memorable moments” from each of our eight academic schools. There’s also a 50th anniversary scholarship – funding that will make the Humber experience more accessible and affordable for students. Finally, there are a ton of fun events, including an alumni reunion, a commemorative speakers’ series and an arts festival. The year will be filled with opportunities both to look back and reminisce, and look forward and plan for the future. Visit humber50.ca to stay upto-date on all the 50th anniversary activities.

Inspectors to help residents suss recycling rules Blue bins aren’t as simple as many might think DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

insidetoronto.com

Plastic seems like a simple enough concept. But if you’re deciding whether to throw it into the blue bin or toss it in the trash, the ubiquitous petroleum product is anything but. For instance: dry cleaning bags are fine, as are sandwich bags and milk bags. Plastic bubble wrap on the other hand is out, as is laminated plastic film like chip bags. Biodegradable bags and plastic containers are out. As are coffee pods - even the ones that say they’re compostable. And don’t even think about putting any plastic that’s black coloured. That stuff’s recycling poison.

Homeowners east of the Humber River - and soon those west of it - may find themselves reminded of the complexity of plastic, as well as the subtlety of cardboard and the hygienic requirements of jars and cans, as the city embarks on a pilot project this year to bring the city up to speed on its increasingly complicated responsibilities when it comes to solid waste diversion. "What we’re doing in the next six months is we have staff going in front of the trucks, going bin by bin and inspecting what the contents are," said Jim McKay, Toronto’s General Manager of Solid Waste Management. "If they see there are problem materials, they’ll leave a little door hanger. It’s really an educational tool that we’re trying to use." The project is part of a broad attempt by the city to reverse a multi-year trend that’s seeing more and more of the blue box recy-

Justin Greaves/Metroland

Recycling bins line Empress Avenue on Friday, May. 19, in North York. clable material being contaminated by items that the city lacks the capacity to recycle. Currently, Toronto’s contamination rate sits at 26 per cent of everything collected. That’s high for a couple of reasons, said

McKay: first, because Toronto adopted a singlestream recycling system where paper is mingled with glass and plastic. "Some of our neighbouring municipalities have a two-stream blue box system, and that’s a cleaner

system than we’ve got ... they’re at four to six per cent," said McKay. "In a two-stream system, cans and bottles go in one bin and paper fibres in another and so immediately if you have any liquid or soil or food still left in a container

it doesn’t get mixed in with paper fibre." In the single-stream system, Toronto can collect more recycling per day. But that leads to the second problem. Over the years, packaging companies have found more and more different kinds of materials to use. And it’s been impossible to keep up. "It’s not just Toronto that’s dealing with this - it’s a problem we all have to face," said Emily Alfred, a solid waste specialist with the Toronto Environmental Alliance. "Materials and packaging are getting more and more clever but we don’t have the technology to recycle all of that. The city is doing what it can. I do agree that there could be more education. Right now it’s education in posters and calendars that go out, but more regular communication is really effective." The pilot project will go on for six months, and eventually move west to Etobicoke as well.

Caregiver Show can offer help, ideas

’It takes all of you. 24/seven you’re dedicated to these two people …’

JASMINE HUI jhui@metroland.com Carm Di Piazza became a full-time caregiver for her parents 10 years ago after her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2007 and her father’s health was declining. She took care of her father until he died in 2014 and is still caring for her mother. "It was challenging at first. I had two nervous breakdowns at the beginning because I was doing it all on my own," Di Piazza said. "It required a lot of patience, energy and time. It wasn’t easy." Her parents did not want to be in a nursing home, so Di Piazza fulfilled their wish by taking care of them every day, do-

and pay for it if I needed to get away." Debbie Cowman has also been taking care of her mother, who was her caregiver a few years ago. Cowman became extremely ill in 2011 and her mother became a caregiver for her. "Mum looked after me for close to one year," Cowman said. "After three years of people looking after me, mum and I moved into an apartment together." Cowman recovered from her illness, but her mother went through severe dehydration and developed bowel issues.

Two months ago, her mother was not able to sit up one morning and doctors diagnosed her with vertigo. Cowman became her main caregiver, cooking meals and helping with tasks, such as grocery shopping despite having severe neuropathy in her hands and feet, which classified her as disabled. "It’s worked out well, considering what we’ve both been through," Cowman said. "It was a bad three years for me and mum was there for me the whole time. I’ve done the same for her." Mary Bart is the chair of Caregiving Matters, a registered Canadian charity that offers an online forum for peer support where caregivers can learn the issues and efforts that go into caregiving.
